SUMMER 2015 HIGHLIGHTS

T H E U LT I M AT E S U R F I N G C O M PA N Y Rip Curl’s Vision is to be regarded in all that we do as the ultimate surfing company. We endeavour to make the best products, run the best events, support the best athletes, deliver the best service, communicate the best brand message and have the best crew of people. Our Mission is to continue developing a brand image that truly reflects our Brand Values; and the attitudes and aspirations of those people on The Search.

TRADITION

Born at Bells Beach, loved across the world... Rip Curl began with a vision. In the late 1960s, Brian and Claw recognised an opportunity to make a living in the new surf market. The duo wanted to create a surfing business that would finance their surf and travel habits, so they designed and made surfboards and wetsuits that would benefit their surfing and time in the ocean. The company was built on the strength and success of these core products. With its core purpose and grass roots enthusiasm, Rip Curl soon expanded across the globe. Early pro surfers, sponsored by Rip Curl, helped spread the Rip Curl word everywhere they travelled, while Claw and Brian started looking at other countries and opportunities. In 1978 Brian travelled to California to launch Rip Curl in the USA. Famed surfer and Quiksilver USA founder Jeff Hakman introduced him to the biggest surf shops in Southern California, and after taking a bunch of wetsuit orders, Brian headed back to Torquay to start production. USA wetsuit production would continue out of Torquay for another four years. On one of his early Californian adventures, Brian was also approached by a Frenchman named Yves Bessas, who was interested in becoming the agent for Rip Curl Wetsuits in France. In 1979, Brian went to Europe to show their wetsuits to the growing European sailboard market. Yves and American Alan Tiegen then signed on to sell and distribute Rip Curl Wetsuits throughout Europe. In 1982 Brian and Claw worked with Franรงois Payot to start Rip Curl Europe. As co-founder, Franรงois would later become CEO of Rip Curl Europe/ Rip Curl Group CEO and is still a founding director of the board.

THE SEARCH Surfing is a lifestyle. For many it’s a way of life. It’s the chance to explore the world and chase adventure. It gives us the opportunity to experience the unknown and search for fun most only dream of… In the 1960s it was impossible to throw a net over Brian and Claw. The duo continually loaded their cars and travelled Australia in search of new and uncrowded waves, new cultures and new experiences. Their trips would often extend for almost the entire Australian surfing coastline. “We explored our own backyard as extensively as we could. We loved charging into the unknown and the journey that waited. It was about the great sense of adventure, anticipation, curiosity and the chance to score great uncrowded waves.” - Claw. Before long, Claw and Brian used their local experiences as a spur to travel overseas. By the late 1970s their thirst for exploration had taken them through Hawaii, Indonesia and lots of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans, including the major surfing locations of USA, Europe and Asia. Nothing seemed impossible… In the early 1990s, Rip Curl decided that The Search concept was the best way to define this roaming lifestyle and in turn, discovered that it was in fact the driving force behind the creation and development of Rip Curl. The philosophy had always been a part of Rip Curl’s DNA, but The Search made sense of it. Rip Curl’s international surf team drives. The Search is alive and well. The Search is endless…

THE WORLD’S BEST TEAM Rip Curl has forever prided itself on having the world’s best surf team and that statement is none truer then today, with leading team riders Mick Fanning, Gabriel Medina, Picolo Clemente and Ella Williams, the 2013 ASP World Champions…

GABRIEL MEDINA

Mick Fanning is one of the world’s greatest surfers, having helped to define the modern era of the sport. Internationally known for his unique and impeccable approach of surfing, Mick clinched his third world title last December in Hawaii. Mick Fanning’s third world title win puts him into the realm of true world champions alongside the legendary Tom Curren and the late, great Andy Irons...

Wonder kid turned professional flare machine, Owen Wright kickstarted his elite career in 2010 by finishing 7th in his inaugural year on the World Tour. A solid big wave game and progressive aerial attack on both fore and backhand has him considered by many the most exciting young surfer in the world. He is now back on tour after a big injury that saw him out of the water for almost one year. You can expect big things from Owen this year…

With one of the best backhands in the business, Matt Wilkinson qualified for the men’s ASP World Tour in 2010 and has since been growing a world-beating moustache and entertaining all with his trademark unpredictable nature. He is one of the most funny surfer on tour and you can follow his madness on his blog www.out2brunch.com

Upon qualifying for the WCT during the 2011 mid-year reshuffle, Gabriel Medina immediately established himself as one of the craziest surfer on the planet, winning two world tour events in a row. In the time since, he’s proven that he’s more than a young surfer who likes to do airs, he’s also demonstrated a powerful rail game and comfort in big, heaving, reefbreak barrels. With a skillset that doesn’t seem to have a glaring weakness, Medina could well become the first Brazilian to win a WCT world title.

THE WORLD’S BEST TEAM If there’s anyone that knows the ins and outs of bikinis it’s a pro surfer. Rip Curl have taken their surf teams expertise and developed the ultimate bikini collection.

ALANA BLANCHARD

NIKKI VAN DIJK

PAULINE ADO

TYLER WRIGHT

BETHANY HAMILTON

As a competitor on the ASP World Championship Tour, Alana is one of the best female surfers in the world. With 950,000 instagram followers, she’s also one of the most recognized! In the last 12 months, the funny and incredibly talented Hawaiian has featured in the famous Sports Illustrated Swim issue, starred in her own ‘Network A’ TV series and again collaborated with Rip Curl on a new ‘Alana’s Closet’ bikini collection.

This year, the ASP Women’s World Tour welcomed Nikki van Dijk as a new addition to the Top 17. Hailing from the cold waters of Phillip Island in Victoria, Nikki is bursting with talent and commitment; qualities that will no doubt see the 2012 ASP World Junior Champion achieve her dreams. Sharing her passion for surfing in the award winning surf film called ‘First Love’, Nikki is focused, hungry for victory and always up for an adventure!

Pauline, or ‘Popo’ as we affectionately call her, is one of Europe’s most successful competitive surfers. In 2009, Pauline became the first European to win an ASP World Junior Title and in 2011, qualified for the ASP World Championship Tour. Having been on tour for four consecutive years, Popo continues to impress with her smooth style, focus and competitive nature.

At age 14, Tyler became the youngest surfer to ever win an ASP World Championship Tour event. At 16, she qualified for the world tour. At 17, she was the ASP Rookie of the Year. At 19, she finished RunnerUp to the ASP World Title. At 20, this high achieving youngster has two goals; a World Title and having the most fun she possibly can! Tyler is a part of a new revolution in female surfing; expect to see her leading the charge into the future.

With an incredible story to tell, Bethany is a worldwide inspiration. At age 13, Bethany’s arm was taken by a shark while surfing at home in Kauai. Through sheer determination and faith, she was soon back in the water and has continued her love of surfing ever since. In 2011, Bethany’s autobiography ‘Soul Surfer’ became a successful feature film and saw her become one of the most famous sportspeople, ever.
