Graham Stuart MP:
Boost for jobs shows that Beverley is on the right track As Parliament prepares to return following the summer recess, I am looking forward to a busy period both in Beverley and Holderness and in Westminster. The Government is focused on providing a strong platform of economic growth to benefit the whole country. This doesn’t come about by accident and requires tough choices and discipline in bringing down the deficit and minimising the debt we leave to the next generation. So it’s great that the latest figures show more people in work than ever before. In Beverley and
On September 24th 2017 the Beverley Barge Preservation Society will be hosting the 3rd World Barge Pulling Championships. The event takes place on Beverley Beck with a start time of 11am with entry being free of charge. All are welcome to cheer on the contestants or even to take part and to see the variety of stalls. Food and drink will be available as well as musical entertainment.

Holderness, the unemployed claimant count stands at 1.6% more than one third below the national average. One of the dangers is that we take this progress for granted. We must not do so but keep making sure that people in the Beverley area have the chance to work and have a better quality of life. Across my constituency there are sixty fewer people out of work than at this point a year ago and that is progress I don’t want to see thrown away. For younger people too, unemployment claims are down by over 5% compared to twelve months ago. In fact, since Labour left office in 2010, there has been a reduction of nearly two-thirds in the number of 18-24 year olds that are out of work. Even in a wealthy town like Beverley there are youngsters who are jobless and sofa surfing. This can have a profound effect on someone’s mental health and long term prospects so the significant improvements we’ve made need to continue.
This annual event which takes place on a 200 metre course along Beverley Beck is organised by The Beverley Barge Preservation Society, a small local charity devoted to giving people, especially the young, a chance to see what life was like in the days when barges plied their trade up and down the River Hull and further afield. The barge Syntan, once owned by Richard Hodgson’s weighs in at 64 tons and has been developed into a living museum and we encourage visits from school parties and the like. In addition we use our other boats, Sun and Mermaid, to take trips down the Beck and on the River Hull.
Graham Stuart MP at Winghams Fish Shop in Withernsea These buoyant jobs figures are not simply created in isolation; they are a reflection of wider economic progress and increasing opportunity. We have more registered enterprises in Beverley and Holderness than ever before and that business success translates into more jobs and better wages for ordinary residents. There is always more to do, and I will continue to work with schools, employers and skills providers to make sure our young people, in particular, have the tools
to succeed as new jobs open up to them. I’ll also use my position to speak up for local businesses which must be protected from excessive taxation and regulation if we’re to maintain momentum and keep on delivering a stronger economy and a better Beverley. One difficulty we have with Sun is that access to her is very difficult if a person is not as mobile as they once were. To this end we are raising money to instal a lift on her so wheelchair users for example can get aboard and enjoy the river trips as well. In addition the winning team will get £200 but over and above this they have the honour of calling themselves World Champions for the year.

Easy ways to make your home chic While locating a stopcock or fitting a new plug socket might be beyond many of us, we Brits haven’t totally lost our DIY mojo. Our tool kits are thinner on the ground than they used to be – 30 per cent of young people don’t even own one – but our appetite for home improvements is insatiable. “People have cottoned on to the fact that you only need the most basic skills to d rastically improve the appearance of your home,” says Christopher Gilbey, founder of bitsbobsandoddjobs.com, a company that supplies handymen to lazy Londoners. “They might pay people to do the boring jobs, but they’re becoming more creative in other respects.”
“In the past, DIY was a quick, cheap, short-term fix; whereas today people are taking a long-term approach, working with what they have and using p remium products old and new to create something wonderful that will last” Edward Bulmer

These improvements not only make the home more pleasant to live in but also, according to estate agent William Rousset of Milton Stone, can add to its value. “Uncluttered properties with attractive colour palettes are simply more appealing to buyers,” he says. What’s more, studies suggest that taking part in “meaningful activities” such as DIY can be beneficial to our mental health – the positive effects are even more pronounced if you avoid hardware stores, says Bulmer. “I don’t spend my Sundays trawling DIY shops or even looking on social media, ” he says. “I just collect than a hammer, some nails and a paintbrush and, in many things I love and find ways to use nhance my home.” cases, no tools at all. “I’m a great them to e believer in simply moving items around to keep things fresh, and ENTRANCE AND digging up forgotten favourites,” HALLWAY says designer Matilda Goad. Dark blues and greens – “warm and inviting” Cover the walls in photos.” Edward Bulmer, an architectural historian and founder of Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, agrees that the definition of DIY is changing: “In the past, DIY was a quick, cheap, short-term fix; whereas today people are taking a long-term approach, working with what they have and using premium products old and new to create something wonderful that will last.”
– have taken over from pale greys and fawns this summer, according to interior designer Nicole Salvesen of salvesengraham.com. While you’re there, why not upgrade your door ‘furniture’ too? An elegant knocker or knob immediately makes the exterior of your home appear more sophisticated. Go for chrome for a modern look or brass if you like a more traditional feel. To see a range of British-made door furniture, visit sdslondon.co.uk. Add some greenery A pair of pot plants positioned either side of your front door will add symmetry and give the front of your house a tailored look. Don’t forget to invest in the planter itself, as well as the plant – stone for a traditional look or zinc or concrete (available from trouva. com) for a more contemporary vibe. Inside, a vase of faux flowers (yes, really – nowadays they can be so lifelike) on a windowsill or shelf gives a sense of occasion: Willow Crossley’s collection for o ka.com is both affordable and realistic. House & Home rationalised by the addition of a rug. “It structures the space; you can position your sofas either side of it and your coffee table on it,” says Salvesen. Sisal rugs from IKEA are a good low-budget option. Blinds not curtains If you don’t love your curtains, get rid, says Max McMurdo, designer and TV presenter, as they reduce the natural light, collect dust, and yellow in the sun. Replace them with tasteful bespoke blinds in shades to contrast with your paintwork from blindstogo.com. Add further interest by painting the woodwork around the windows a darker shade than the walls. Salvesen recommends deep neutrals such as Dream On and Milk from Paint the Town Green (paintthetowngreen.biz). Furnish the hallway However small and dingy it is, an attractive ceiling light, a runner and a piece of furniture will give your hallway a more polished look. “Proper furniture in your hall, even if it is the slimmest console table or a bistro chair, fools the eye that there is more space,” says Salvesen.
SITTING ROOM
Throws and cushions Overhaul a tired sofa with a throw (see atlanticblankets.com) and some striking cushions. “Buy a pair of cushions for an ordered look – the eye enjoys symmetry – then throw in a couple of different patterns to complete the look,” says Nicole Salvesen. Fermoie. com has an extensive range of piped cushions (£76). A wall of books Books are the most appealing

of ornaments – all you need is some shelves to display them. IKEA’s Kalax shelves (£39; ikea. com) are a good place to start – once you’ve painted them a deep hue (see grillo-designs.com for instructions on how to paint IKEA furniture) and filled them, no one will know they were flatpacked. And floating-shelves.com has a range of hardwood wall and corner shelves that can be supplied unfinished.
make a room appear taller, paint the cornice and ceiling the same colour, adds Salvesen. Beware, though, that houses with green and yellow walls get the fewest sales/letting enquiries, according to research by draker.com. A new lighting scheme Strategically positioned lamps (preferably on a dimmer) will enhance the atmosphere of your room without you having to lift a paintbrush. Create symmetry with pairs of side lamps, and liven them up with new shades – see pooky.com for fabric shades and matildagoad.com for raffia scallop shades. “Lamp shades are a detail that can sit well in a room whether the light is on or off,” says Matilda Goad.
Clever brushwork A new paint colour is the obvious way to refresh a room. This summer is all about contrasting ceilings, according to Edward Bulmer – rococo blue and yellow shades to create space and light. “If you have beautiful cornicing and plasterwork, don’t cover them in dark colours, go for subtle The statement rug pastel shades,” he suggests. Hide your TV Paint the insides of your TV console or shelving a darker colour to distract the eye from a mammoth TV. “It doesn’t have to be black – it can be dark blue or grey,” Salvesen explains. Hang some wall art, or position a piece of sculpture to create a different focal point. Group pictures Clusters of prints & paintings give the impression there is more art around the house. Lay your paintings on the floor to decide how to arrange them – interior designer Rita Konig suggests hanging them offset with no “tram lines” between them. Christopher Gilbey recommends eye level for a single picture – people always hang art too high: “Something...... Continued on page 10

House & Home Brighten brown furniture Lift the look of your bedroom by painting your chest of drawers or bedside tables, says Max McMurdo: “Frenchic’s range of chalk paints that offer diverse colours, finishes and textures can transform a forgotten piece of furniture.” Or you could cover your bedside tables with tablecloths, says Rita Konig. bigger above something smaller looks better.” “Photographs work with paintings,” adds Salvesen. Cheap mounts and frames are available at eframe.co.uk.
BEDROOM
Dress your bed A bed should always be covered, according to interior designer Sophie Conran, even if you’re not using the room. Rather than replacing your bed linen, invest in a blanket or quilt to throw over your bed. For the full effect, design your own headboard (onion dome-shapes are in fashion) and get it made up at headboardworkshop.co.uk. Update your wardrobe Small changes such as adding antique-look door handles from anthropologie.com and a darker paint colour can make a big difference to your bedroom, says Matilda Goad. If you’ve got time, paint skirting boards and door frame to match.
BeverleyMag September 2017
Tune your electrics One of life’s little luxuries is a lamp that can be turned off without getting out of bed. Conran recommends hiring an electrician to put in a 5 amp circuit for any lights with plugs to ensure they can be on a dimmer. Maisons du Monde sells tasteful bedside lamps with shades for £15.59.
update them with an interesting l i n i n g , suggests Conran: “My curtains are lined with a bright y e l l o w fabric, so that when the sun comes up it shines through, creating the illusion that it’s sunny, even on a dull day. It’s lovely to get that flash of colour when opening and closing the curtains.” Hang your rugs Rather than repainting your walls, hang a rug or tapestry over the bed to transform the look of the room. Rita Konig and Edward Bulmer are both advocates of rugs on walls – they don’t have to be vintage, you could go for a new wall hanging from Uzbekistan from rugstoreonline.co.uk.
Upgrade your hangers If you don’t have space for a wardrobe in your guest bedroom, buy a cheap clothes rail from IKEA and invest in some pastelcoloured linen coathangers from Line your curtains Take down existing curtains and ninacampbell.com, £25 for two.
Somewhere to sit A comfortable bedroom chair instantly transforms the space from somewhere to sleep to somewhere to spend time reading and relaxing, says Salvesen. Steal one from your sitting room or invest in a Charley chair in retro orange from made.com, currently on sale for £129. Just don’t let it become a dumping ground for clothes. KITCHEN
Nice jars Even if cupboard space is limited, you can de-clutter your kitchen surfaces and add interest by decanting pasta, rice, coffee and tea into attractive containers. Salvesen recommends Kilner jars with lids such as those from Le Parfait (leparfait.co.uk). Hang up your plates Don’t be afraid to hang art on the walls – it immediately makes a kitchen look less clinical. If you’re worried about grease, hang plates
instead of paintings. Scour your local vintage shops for interesting ceramics or buy online from anthropologie.com or Rockett St George at rockettstgeorge.co.uk. Replace your handles Decorative brass and copper kitchen cupboard handles and bull knobs are taking over from flatfronted units, and don’t be afraid to mix metals, Salvesen says: “I’ve got chrome taps and brass knobs, and no one notices.” For simple handles, see thehandlestudio. co.uk or for something fancier willowandstone.co.uk. Rethink your cupboards Another way to clear your kitchen surfaces without building new units is to improve existing cupboard interiors. “Spice racks screwed to the inside of doors, hooks and additional shelving will give you more useful internal storage,” Salvesen explains. Sdslondon.co.uk supplies a range of wicker storage baskets for cupboards, along with wire pullout baskets. If you’re confident with a drill, you could even upgrade your cupboard doors – classic shaker style never goes out of fashion. Shakerdoors.co.uk supply doors for Ikea units. Inject some colour Rather than repainting your whole kitchen, overhaul the appearance by painting the island or units a contrasting colour. “If the island is a different tone, it will give more of a sensation of space,” says Salvesen. Bulmer recommends using the pale green shades of an English country garden to help blur boundaries of house and garden.

Beverley Food Festival returns for a twelfth taste-tastic year! When Beverley Town Council organised the first Food Festival in 2006, little did they know it would go on to be an annual success enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors alike. The original idea was to bring a few producers from Beverley’s rural hinterland into the town centre to help celebrate local food, so on a crisp Sunday morning in 2006, thirty-five producers set up their stalls along with a small Food Theatre, in what proved to be a big success for the Town Council - one that has grown stronger year on year. This was the first Food Festival in the East Riding and has led the way for several to follow.
and Beverley Garland Dancers will put in an appearance. There will be live broadcasts from our town’s very own Beverley FM. The beauty of the entertainment is that it’s all fabulous and local like the food!
Starting at 9:30am on Sunday 1st October, with an official opening by The Mayor of Beverley Councillor Ann Willis at 10.00am, the festival runs until 4.30pm, with a wide range of different foods from around the region available to purchase and enjoy. Shoppers can find everything from locally reared meat and traditional preserves, to tasty tangy cheese and real Yorkshire ale. One of the favourite festival sights is hundreds of people walking around the streets of Beverley, with sticks of freshly bought local sprouts over their shoulders! Additional these traditional stalls will be some carefully selected hot food venders, giving people the chance to taste some terrific street food not usually available in our Yorkshire market town.
Now, twelve years later this has become an award winning event, winning the 2017 North of England ‘Rural Oscar for Tourism’ and commendation at national level, and ‘Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award for Best Large Event’ in 2016. This year approximately 140 stalls will be attending the event, alongside the well-loved Local Food Theatre Marquee. It is anticipated that thousands of people will attend, making it one of the busiest days in Beverley calendar, bringing a welcome economic boost not just to the food producers, but also to retailers and the local hospitality trade. ready to whip some ingredients from stall holders into delicious and exciting dishes. As usual, a highlight will be the annual “Ready, Steady, Cook” style competition at 12:00pm between presenters from BBC Radio Humberside Phil White and Jonathan Parker. This will be followed by the hotly contested HEYHA Copper Saucepan Apprentice Chef competition, with two aspiring young chefs.
Beverley Food Festival is part of British Food Fortnight, Chef Raymond Blanc said “This is a great event and it has obviously grown in popularity and its offering over the years. What a good example for others to follow. This is the perfect way to involve local suppliers and farmers to get in front of their community and I would be keen to know how many of them got on having been involved. A fantastic event that I am sure will continue to grow and grow.”
Familiar festival face Professor Fiddlesticks will be out and about to entertain families, whilst through the town centre musicians from The Processed Pea will entertain shoppers. Beverley Brass Band will help launch the day Beverley Town Council hopes residents will have an appetite to once again join the festivities on Sunday 1st October 2017, where there will be something available to suit all tastes. A family day of food festivities and fun!

Colourful healthy foods for well-being
While deliciously fresh pink grapefruit is very healthy, it’s tough to beat pink salmon for its longevity-increasing properties. With its high content of omega-3 fats, which help protect against heart disease, high blood pressure and dementia, you should try to eat a serving of this kind of fish per week.
You’ve heard of the food pyramid, here’s the food rainbow - the colourful foods that will help you live longer and in better health.
Nuts keep you looking good
Eat colourful fruit and vegetables for good health Red is a source of vitamin C
While red wine has shown some benefits in increasing longevity, the real stars of the red part of the rainbow are fruits: specifically, tomatoes. Tomatoes are packed full of antioxidants and help protect against prostate cancer too... as if that weren’t enough, they’re also an excellent source of vitamin C and are fat-free and low in calories.
Make orange one of your five a day
Oranges are not the only fruit, or food, to ensure you get in your diet – carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene which, once it’s converted to vitamin A in your bloodstream, helps fight cancer and heart disease, as well as ensuring your immune system is fighting fit.
The health benefits of onions
Onions steal the show in this part of the colour spectrum, providing you with heart-disease fighting compounds and working to keep your arteries strong and healthy. It’s not just about your heart,
BeverleyMag September 2017
though, onions and their relative garlic, will help ward off viruses which will keep you fitter and healthier for longer.
too – the greater the quantity of antioxidants in your bloodstream, which means more protection against cancer and other diseases.
Foods high in calcium
Green vegetables are a super food
You can’t go wrong with this colour – be it leafy greens, herbs such as parsley or basil, cruciferous greens such as cabbage, broccoli or Brussels sprouts, you’re giving your body a fantastic push towards a longer life. Research from the University of Hawaii has shown that Japanese longevity can at least partly be attributed towards high consumption of fresh vegetables.
Blue to help beat cancer
Sweet and bursting with healthy antioxidants blueberries are a delicious way to try to extend your life. The more fruit you eat – not just blueberries but other fruit
Calcium is essential if you want to avoid broken bones and crumbling teeth, and you’ll find lots of it in white products such as yogurt, cheese and milk. Eaten in moderation, dairy products will also give you essential protein, which you need for healthy bones, as well as immune function. The health benefits of grapefruit
Okay, so it’s not in the rainbow, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you missed it out of your diet. Not only are nuts a fantastic source of healthy fats, protecting you against Alzheimer’s and other diseases, they’re also a good source of vitamin E which doesn’t just keep you living longer, it also keeps you looking good for longer.

LOCAL PEOPLE, LOCAL LIVES Name : Hossein Ghazaani Job: Owner of Pizza Pan takeaway on Windmill Walk in Beverley. Tell us about your family? I have been married to my wife Patricia for 38 years and we have a beautiful daughter called Elisha. What do you do in your spare time? Running a business doesn’t afford me much spare time, but when I do have time off I enjoy playing snooker, shopping, and visiting friends and family. How would you describe Beverley to a visitor? A beautiful town that is still growing but has managed to retain its quintessential English charm and appeal. With great shopping (especially some of the smaller independent shops), fantastic restaurants (Cosmos is a favourite), Cinema, Theatre and of course the Treasure House & Art Gallery their is always lots to see and do. What do you like most about Beverley? It has to be the people, everyone is so friendly. If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? It would have to be Nic Gough from Beverley Mag. He once told me that he became a vegetarian in 1977 and I would be interested to explore and learn more about his beliefs on the subject. I would also like to sample some of his vegetarian cooking and hopefully come away with some great vegetarian recipes and meal ideas. What is your favourite food? I enjoy most foods, but am not particularly keen on spicy foods. As a lover of fine foods I am really looking forward to visiting this years Beverley Food Festival - which is one of the highlights of my year - there is so much to see, smell, taste and (of course) buy! When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see? I can’t remember the last time I actually went to the cinema as work and family commitments don’t leave me much time. I know that many of my customers speak very highly of the new Parkway Cinema in Flemingate and I would like to visit and support it. Lots of customers will call in to the shop for a pizza after a night at the cinema so I am always the first to hear the reviews of each film - good or bad. . The recent showing of the film Dunkirk has had everyone singing its praises - in fact I can’t remember one person saying anything negative about the film. Perhaps this should have been the film I had seen last! Briefly explain your working day and what your job entails? Running a small takeaway business involves a lot of my time. Like most small businesses most of the general running of the business falls on my shoulders, although I do have a fantastic team working with me in the shop. As we use fresh ingredients, these have to be ordered and prepared on a daily basis before we open the doors for business.
BeverleyMag September 2017
What do you love most about your job? I love meeting people and hearing their stories, everybody has something interesting to say or has an opinion or experience to share. Over the years many, many customers have shared their stories and life events with me and I feel priviledged to be able to call them friends. I am on first name terms with the majority of my customers and look forward to hearing updates on their lives and families when they call in to the shop. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time? Definitely retired and enjoying more quality family time. Pizza Pan, Beverley T: 01482 881 807

Garden exercise: How many calories does gardening burn? According to the experts a few hours hard gardening can work wonders for your health and wellbeing - as well as burn calories fast.
to leave you slightly out of breath and raise the heartbeat counts as moderate intensity exercise, which, according to the experts, can help protect against heart disease. Get moving for just half an hour three times a week and you can expect some benefit, so if the sun is shining what better incentive do you need for venturing into the garden and pulling up those weeds?
Here are just some of the benefits you can hope to reap from your garden.
The secret to a beautiful lawn
Gardening burns fat When it comes to burning calories digging and shovelling come top of the list with mowing and weeding not far behind. Spend half an hour doing any of the following activities and expect to use up: • Digging: 250 calories • Lawn mowing: 195 calories • Weeding: 105 calories • Raking: 100 calories Gardening tones you up Wielding the hoe and strimming the edges are also great alternatives to a sweaty tone-up class in the gym. Hedge trimming helps shapes your biceps while raking, forking and mowing will all help to strengthen the arms and shoulders as well as toning the abdominal muscles. Digging and squatting down to move or lift objects can help tone thighs and buttocks. Gardening protects your heart Any activity that is energetic enough
Gardening relieves stress It’s not just your body that will benefit. The psychological benefits of being outdoors, working in the sunshine and fresh air, are also clear. Studies have shown that just looking at trees and plants reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and relieves tension in muscles. In much the same way as a beautiful painting lifts the mood, looking at a summer garden, soaking up the colours, smells and sounds can help overall wellbeing. Gardening stimulates the senses Horticultural therapists have found that, for elderly patients in particular, gardening can stimulate all the senses - providing interesting sights, sounds, textures, tastes and scents - and stimulate memories and connection with the past.

Choosing the best low-maintenance shrubs for your garden Find out what low-maintenance shrubs to plant in your garden, including evergreens and options for shady gardens. If you’re not a keen gardener, or you find gardening difficult due to lack of time or perhaps health issues, then it’s worth thinking about planting low maintenance shrubs that just get on with it. You’re looking for slow-growing compact shrubs that can cope with very little attention, although some things are not completely maintenance-free. They may need a once a year trim, for instance.
What low-maintenance shrubs to plant An evergreen presence Evergreen shrubs are very warming in winter when deciduous shrubs have dropped their leaves. Ilex × altaclerensis ‘Golden King’ A rounder-leaved holly that isn’t too prickly, with oval sage-green and dark-green leaves margined in rich mayonnaise. This berries fairly well and makes a lollipop-like roundel roundel in time, eventually making a large shrub some 4m x 4m (13 x 13ft). The bright foliage is good at casting some light in shady spots. Sarcococca confusa ‘Sweet Box’ A compact Chinese evergreen
BeverleyMag September 2017
with winter-fragrant, cream-white flowers that are so heavily scented you wonder how such small flowers, mere collections of stamens, can give out so much scent. The foliage is glossy and green and spear-shaped and this makes a small shrub, sometimes with black berries. Up to 2m if happy (6ft) but more liekly a four feet high. (1.2m) Aucuba japonica, the Japanese Laurel These are very underrated by gardeners, being easy to grow and quick to establish - even in deep shade. The usual form, ‘Crotonifolia’, is garishly spotted in yellow but ‘Rozannie’ has bright-green, jaggededged foliage. Large red fruits can follow in this compact Japanese laurel. (Up to 1m/ 3ft)
For spring flowers Scented flowers matter at this time of the year - so position these in warm positions if you can and then the nectar and fragrance will flow. Viburnum x burkwoodii An easy to keep viburnum with semi-evergreen, shiny green foliage and domes of lily-scented white
flowers held on splaying downy stems. This usually flowers in April and there are named forms including the pink-tinted ‘Park Farm Hybrid’, the white ‘Mohawk’ and the very fragrant ‘Anne Russell’. (Between 2 and 3m/ up to 10ft)
and the cream-white flowers are scented. It is a scruffy bush in winter, a tangle of stems, but the early flowers can’;t be beaten - either in the garden or in a vase.
Viburnum x bodnanatense ‘Dawn’ This is a large upright shrub, so put this at the back and it will begin to flower in November on bare stems, smelling heavily of hyacinths, and then continue in fits and starts whenever the weather is warm enough in winter. It will often have a final flourish in March., as the leaves appear. ‘Dawn’ is a selected form with pinker flowers.
Summer-flowering deciduous shrubs do need a bit of tweaking after flowering to encourage new wood. Normally a third of the wood, the darkest older wood, is removed to encourage fresh growth.
Lonicera x purpusii ‘Winter Beauty’ This can flower as early as January in some years, hence the name,
For summer flowers
Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ - Mock Orange Citrus-scented white flowers appear in summer and each four-petalled white flower is smudged in damsonpink so they never look glacial. This variety id far less-vigorous than most and the flowers stare you in the face rather than nod downwards. (4ft/ 1.2m)
Gardening Choisya × dewitteana ‘Aztec Pearl’ Mexican Orange Blossom Finely divided, rich-green evergreen foliage and fragrant almond-scented blush-white flowers in May (and often in late summer too) on an elegantly restrained shrub. Flowers better in warm positions. (2.5m/ 7ft) Ceanothus ‘Puget Blue’ Californian lilac (below) For a warm garden only and best near a sheltered wall. The small crinkled dark-green leaves are topped with dense clusters of darkblue flowers - but it must have a shletered site. Harsh winds scorch the foliage and cold winters diminish it. (3m/ 9ft)
SOLVE YOUR STORAGE PROBLEMS SHEDS Fuchsia ‘Mrs Popple’ (above) This is a hardy fuchsia with red and purple flowers of substance and it’s very good in shadier positions. It will need a cut back to the lowest shooting buds in spring -once the worst of the winter is over. (1m/ 3ft) Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diabolo’ Small shrubs with three-lobed leaves, small pink-tinted creamy flowers followed by small brwon-red berries. Principally grown for foliage though, and much better in semishade than full sun. There is also a golden form called ‘Dart’s Gold’. (1.5m/ 5ft at most)
How to plant
Weigela ‘Bristol Ruby’ The almost black buds, clusters of wine-red trumpet-shaped flowers and dark, sultry foliage make this a dramatic addition. (1.5m/ 5ft)
For shady gardens Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ A shade lover that produces creamwhite conical heads in late-summer and autumn. These fade beautifully into autumn, producing lime-green flowerheads, and the flowers can be dried. There are others that have larger flowers, but this one’s beautifully propoprtioned. (Up to 1.5m/ 5ft -but less in poorer soil)
Start by clearing your garden, or some of it, and level it and then cover it with black, heavy duty membrane to suppress weeds. Landscapers will be very used to doing this, if it’s too tough for you. September and March are the best planting months.

Arrange your shrubs in suitable places, making allowances for their eventual size, and then make a cross-like cut into the membrane and plant through it. Cover up the membrane with a bark mulch and do choose a good bark product, because if you go down the cheap route you’ll get unsightly painted wood chips and lots of weed seeds.

Five of the best starter classic cars
If you’re buying your first classic car,we’ve brought together five models which are reliable, easy to repair, and great to drive to help get you started. So, you’ve got a few thousand pounds burning a hole in your metaphorical pocket and you want to buy your first classic car. Well, let me be the first to offer my sincere congratulations! You’re just about to enter a world of fun – well, you are if you buy the right car. However the classic car scene encompasses a huge range of cars from vintage Austins built in the 1920s, through to 1990s Japanese supercars and navigating your way through the thousands of models on offer can be a bit of a minefield.
Morris Minor
Either way you then just need to get in and drive, enjoying sublime handling in an enviably reliable package. Pay: £1,500-3,000
Austin Mini The original Mini is a masterpiece of packaging that manages to seat four in comfort while simultaneously outhandling all of its contemporaries, no matter how expensive or overtly sporting.
You’ll need to watch for rust (and woodworm if you fancy an estate, or Traveller in Morris-speak) but they’re otherwise bomb-proof and can be mended with an adjustable spanner and a screwdriver. Pay: £5,000-8,000
Mazda MX-5
All come with a simple but effective folding roof, double-wishbone suspension all round and a rearwheel-drive chassis that shames some sports cars costing six figures. The only thing you need to watch for is rust but there are plenty of rot-free examples out there for under £1,500. Double that sum gets you behind the wheel of an original, UK-supplied car (Japanese market grey-imports were marketed as the Eunos and are worth a bit less than a genuine UK car) with low-miles and a full service history.
BeverleyMag September 2017
It also dominated the social scene throughout the Kingdom and won every racing championship it was eligible to compete in. Following years of neglect they are now bona fide classics that seem to rise in value by the hour. The range is as broad as it is interesting and you should buy on condition and not worry too much about a specific model or year. Rust is, unsurprisingly, the number one killer but if you buy a good example you’ll be able to treasure it for another couple of generations without having to spend too much more on upkeep. Oh, and when it’s cold you can bring it inside and let it warm itself by the fireside. Pay: £5,000-15,000
The models are too legion to list here but a manual drop-top with wire wheels and photographic evidence of extensive restoration could persuade me to get my cheque book out. After that you can pick and choose from a bewildering array of styling and tuning parts and the subsequent performance is limited only by the depth of your pockets and your willingness to get grease under your fingernails. VW Golf GTI MKII There are plenty out there that have been uprated with more modern engines, gearboxes and braking systems; the Morris Minor is one of the few classic cars for which originality isn’t very important.
So here are my five favourite starter classic cars; the only criterion to be on my list is that they have to be reliable, easy to repair, and great to drive. That most of them are good value too is a little bonus I’ve thrown in for you… The Mazda MX-5 MK1 (the one with the pop-up headlights) was produced between 1989 and 1998 and is available with either a 1.6-litre or 1.8-litre engine. The former is slower but revs better while the latter is a bit coarser but more muscular.
Everyone has a Morris Minor memory, usually involving a sensible grandfather who used one to collect firewood and to take your grandmother shopping. It smelled of old engine oil and vinyl leather – cloth and pipe tobacco and will make you smile whenever you think about it – so why not create similar memories for your grandchildren by buying your own Moggie?
The original Golf GTI redefined performance motoring but even its staunchest fans (and I count myself among that number) would have to admit that it is now a bit crude to drive, suffering from hopeless brakes, vague steering and a level of NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) that is simply unacceptable these days.
MGB In its day, the MGB represented freedom and youth and if you argued that it single-handedly changed the image of Great Britain from staidand-sensible to swinging-and-sexy I probably wouldn’t argue. The MX-5 might be cheaper, faster, handle better and a million times more reliable, but if you’ve got your heart set on a period convertible, then the MGB is the one to choose.
However, the Mark 2 Golf, built between 1984 and 1992, is a very different kettle of fish. It’s more refined, more powerful, only marginally heavier and much, much nicer to drive. It’s also woefully undervalued, in stark contrast to the earlier cars. If you can find a nice, original car that hasn’t been modified then you are all set to enjoy one of the gems of the 1980s. You’ll also be able to tour Europe in confidence and when you get bored with it you might even be able to turn a small profit. Now that’s what classic car ownership should be all about!

Christmas
is coming ...
Travelling to work this morning the topic on the radio was Christmas shopping! Later in the day I had a beauty appointment and we discussed that two more visits brought us to Christmas week. Hence, this month Christmas is the topic! Let’s start with a shopping opportunity. Last year we had a 2 day tour to Harrogate it had lovely shops plus we stopped off at McArthur Glenn in York. Our guests loved it, they got off to such a good start buying Christmas gifts we are going again this October too. Christmas markets offer a lovely atmosphere and often unique ideas for gifts. In the UK Edinburgh is one of my favourite options. A stunning city at anytime of the year with so many museums, eateries plus every shop you could wish for. The buzzing atmosphere of the markets offer a real mix of Scotland, Germany & Belgium all rolled into one. Hollands biggest Christmas market is in the lovely town of Dordrecht. The market is offered for one weekend only each December and what a celebration. Museums open their doors for free, the great church should not be missed either. The market winds its way around the streets and you will come across a mix of live music too. We are visiting for a dash this year on Saturday when the shops are open so you can even enjoy a visit to C&A. Travelling via North Sea Ferries from Hull to Rotterdam you can top up your drinks cupboard and get wonderful gift packs in the perfumery. Turkey & Tinsel is always popular and great fun pre Christmas. There are many holidays available travelling by coach or self drive in your car. These are usually a Monday to Friday beginning with Christmas Eve and ending with New Year’s day. London is popular for a pre Christmas break. How about a 2 night weekend break with a top seat show, dinner at a top London Restaurant, 24 hour hop on hop off River boat ticket and more from only £199 per person twin/double share. Lapland flying from Humberside is now full, alternative airports are available or you can book early for 2018. You do need to book to fly from Humberside early, as seats are limited. Iceland in January has now sold out but I am delighted to say we have a new date 16th February 2018 - which would make a super gift for a loved one. Where ever in the world and when ever you wish to travel, we will be delighted to plan and book your adventure.

Health & Wellbeing
Ten benefits of spending time outdoors Yes, fresh air really can do you the world of good – from feeling happier to helping you sleep better. So what are you waiting for?
through an urban environment, according to a Japanese study published in the International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology. Researchers also found that blood pressure levels were lower after just 15 minutes of walking.
Get outdoors to feel happier, sleep better and even save money
8. You’ll sleep better Get outside and do some exercise during the day - and you’ll enjoy a much more fitful night’s slumber. People who indulge in at least two-and-a-half hours’ physical activity each week enjoy a 65 per cent improvement in sleep quality, according to a study at Oregon State University. And if you’re lucky enough to live by the sea - or make an effort to visit the coast regularly - you may well sleep better than your inland counterparts. The reason? Sea air contains charged negative hydrogen ions, which boost our ability to absorb oxygen meaning we’ll feel more energised throughout the day and more rested at night.
1. You’ll feel happier in minutes Just five minutes of exercise in an outdoor green space is enough to significantly lift your mood. That’s according to a study published in the Environmental Science & Technology journal. And you don’t have to make that much effort to feel the effects: relatively lowimpact activities such as walking, gardening and fishing all helped boost self-esteem. 2. You’ll burn more calories You don’t need us to tell you that you’ll expend more energy if you get off the sofa and go for a walk. But even if you exercise indoors - by walking on a treadmill in the gym, for example - you still won’t see the same benefits as you would in the open air. The reason? The varied terrain, gradient and weather outdoors puts more demands on your body, and uses a wider range of muscles - meaning you’ll burn up to five per cent more calories. 3. You’ll have healthier bones Vitamin D is essential for bone health as it promotes calcium absorption from our food. And the best source of vitamin D? Sunlight! In general, you should try to get 10 minutes of sun exposure to your bare skin once or twice a day, according to National Osteoporosis Society (www. nos.org.uk) recommendations. Remember, even on cloudy days, your body can still manufacture

vitamin D from sunlight; it just takes a little longer. 4. You’ll exercise for longer Exercise outdoors and you’ll stick at it for longer than if you keep fit behind closed doors. Older adults who are physically active outdoors accumulate significantly more minutes of exercise, according to a US study published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. On average, the outdoor exercisers clocked up 30 minutes more activity per week than their indoor counterparts. 5. You’ll save money There are lots of ways that getting outdoors can save you pennies. A few suggestions? Walking to the shops instead of taking the car means you won’t have to pay for petrol or parking. Growing your own veg will knock money
off your shopping bill. And while you’re out and about, you won’t be spending so much on heating and lighting your home. 6. You’ll make new friends You’re unlikely to make many friends while you’re sitting in your own front room. But join a walking group or community gardening project, for example, and you’re guaranteed to meet lots of new and interesting people. You’ll also discover new places and develop fresh skills. 7. You’ll feel less stressed The key here is not just to get outside - but to head off for a walk through the woods. In Japan, this is known as ‘Shrinrin-yoku’ or ‘forest bathing’. When people go for a woodland walk, levels of the stress hormone cortisol are reduced by nearly 16 per cent more than if they simply stroll
9. You’ll give your eyes a rest Spend all day focusing on TV and computer screens indoors and you’re likely to suffer from eye strain, headaches and even long-term sight damage. But step outside and there’s so much more to look at, which will give your eyes the workout they so desperately need. Focusing on distant objects relaxes the eye muscles, which helps lessen the strain. 10. You’ll boost your memory Need extra incentive to go for a walk on a miserable day? Spending an hour outdoors, interacting with nature, leads to an average 20% boost in short-term memory and attention span, according to a study at the University of Michigan. The researchers noted the effects were the same regardless of the weather.

Entertainment on the day will be include the following: has brought together a host of specially selected traders with a vintage feel to offer visitors a pleasant, stress-free shopping experience. This year Nic is telling people to ‘lose the list’ and opt for carefully chosen surprises for friends and relatives. Nic explains: “With just three months to Christmas, this fair is the perfect opportunity to start shopping for gifts. My advice is not to ask people for lists of what they want this year – it’s so satisfying to match a unique, one-of-a-kind gift to the perfect person! This year choose something that is unique, special and that they will treasure – something that will remind them of you. Also, surprises are so much more fun than getting what you asked for.

Nic and his partner Jane came up with the idea of hiring the Minster and holding regular events to give vintage traders a place to sell their products and offer shoppers a regular, one-stop-shop for everything vintage in a fun atmosphere with fantastic food & entertainment. Nic said: “Thanks to celebrities like Kirsty Allsopp, there is a huge demand for everything vintage from gifts to homeware and country antiques. People seem to love the events and the idea is to give them a special shopping experience that you can’t get anywhere else and certainly not on most high streets. Our traders are very carefully selected and are genuinely enthusiastic, deeply committed, knowledgeable and offer unique ranges of goods.” As well as traders and shoppers, the Minster benefits from the event with 50% of the money going towards its upkeep. Doors open from 10am to 4pm. Entrance is just £2 for Adults. Accompanied children are free. Unaccompanied £1.

The Last Word
FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Back to school – already!
Why is it that at the beginning of the school holidays, the long 6 weeks looms ahead of us, seemingly without end? Then, we blink and it’s time to go back to school! It happens every year so I’m not sure why I’m so surprised. Yet here we are again at the beginning of a new academic year. The children have new uniform (incidentally this makes them very happy because I refuse to buy new uniform at the end of the summer term so trousers etc start looking a bit short!) and new shoes, new stationery and everything else they need for the autumn term. I suppose what I like best is that it’s a return to normality, a return to structured days and a return, dare I say it, to normal bedtimes. Of course, it’s also a return to me nagging to get homework done. I tell them the nagging is just part of being a parent and they’ll understand when they have children of their own! I am so turning in to my own mother!
What did we ever do without Google?
This is a point of minor hilarity for my children – the fact that when I was at school and, indeed, when I studied for my degree, the internet didn’t exist! Of course, nowadays, a quick search on Google and the information is there at your fingertips! When I remind the children how lucky they are because we didn’t have the internet and we had to write all our assignments by hand (and then write them up neatly before handing them in), the sheer horror on their faces is truly comical. With information so easy to gather now, I do wonder how we managed it. All I can say is, it may have taken longer but it does mean that in the event of a technology breakdown or a zombie apocalypse, I’ll still know how to find things out.
Quotes to ponder
The first comes from Aristotle and is appropriate, I think, for this time of year. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” The second is just one I like! “If we’re not meant to have midnight snacks, why is there a light in the fridge?”
