BeverleyMag April 2016 Dear Readers Welcome to the March edition of your Beverley Mag. In this month’s edition we have lots of local and regional news as well as a fantastic feature on Cottingham and all that it has to offer including some great shops and services as well as a full calendar of events - kicking off with the fantastic Springboard Festival in May. We also have a Health and Wellbeing feature. We have Busted tickets to be won in the monthly competition which has made me dig all my old boy band CD’s out to play in the car (much to the annoyance of my hubby) perhaps i’ll dig out my Bay City Rollers albums next and really get under his skin!!!. We have the usual crossword and suduko puzzles to get your brain exercised. For our green fingered readers we have news of a brand new Gardening event that people can get involved in - so please read it and if you are a community group that would benefit from this do join up - and keep us informed as to your progress. Graham Stuart our local MP has been busy as usual and in his column talks about fighting to save minor injury hospitals within the region. We have news about the new average speed cameras on the A1079 on the motoring section if you want to know what is going on and why.). Until next month - take care and enjoy the magazine Kind regards

Minor Injury Units Just before Easter the news came through that the East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group is considering closing the Minor Injury Units at Hornsea, Withernsea and Driffield, which they say are underused because people are instead opting to go to Hull Royal Infirmary’s emergency department. I will oppose these proposals strongly. Having fought for our local community hospitals both before being elected in 2005 and again in 2007, I know the strength of feeling that exists in favour of keeping healthcare hubs close to people. This is particularly true because Hornsea and Withernsea have elderly populations, high levels of disability and receive huge influxes of visitors in the summer. The people who live there are not to blame for the fact that half the areas these units would naturally service are in the North Sea, which necessarily restricts the number of people who use them.

vital services were last threatened. There will be a petition, rallies, leaflets and more – please stay tuned for further details.

This fits a worrying pattern where the specific needs of urban communities are always afforded additional support but those of rural and coastal areas are sacrificed as being unaffordable.

Minding the Minster

No Minster Roof Tours! One of the most popular tourist attractions in Beverley Minster will, I’m sorry to say, not be available over the next few months. From Easter onwards we won’t be able to offer tours in the roof during weekdays, and only the 11.15 tour will be guaranteed on a Saturday. Apologies, but it’s beyond our control. The main reason is that we will be having a new fire alarm system installed throughout the whole church, replacing one that has given us many years of service but which now is considered outdated and not worth repairing. This means that there will be work going on in the roof for 10 weeks, which has to take priority. The other reason the weekday tours are ending, at least in the short term, is that the two existing

full-time virgers, John Dell and me, are leaving. John has already retired; we had a farewell bring-andshare meal for him on Sunday 20th March, and I am stepping down to take over a new venture, the Monks Walk pub in Highgate. Interviews have been held for replacements and, hopefully, a new team will be in place very soon and they can decide later in the year whether or not to reinstate these tours. I will still be available to help out if required, but they may prefer to shake things up and do something new. But, as it stands, this will probably be the last piece I write as a fulltime virger. I’ll just say that I’ve loved almost every single minute of the 10 years I’ve worked in the Minster and, if you haven’t already been inside to see what a magnificent place it is, then you really should. By Neil Pickford

Beverley Mag wishes Neil every success in his new venture.

Mervyn’s Swan Song Easter Day was the final service at Beverley Minster for Mervyn King, who retired as Assistant Director of Music. He has been singing in the choir for 46 years and says, “it’s been a really fulfilling time for me, both musically and spiritually.” His involvement with the Minster choir began when, at the age of 20, he was training to be a teacher in Hull. “I was sent to a comprehensive school in Hull for a teaching practice and had the good fortune to work with Alan Spedding, the head of music. He had recently been appointed as the ‘Master of the Choristers’ at Beverley Minster and invited me along to sing. I’ve been there ever since!”

experience of worship for others.”

He describes the commitment and sense of duty required in the demanding schedule of practices and services by saying, “it’s just what Christians do when they recognise their God-given gift. Choir members offer their singing to God in worship and hopefully enhance the

As well as singing he has been able to conduct the choir, and this has been his real pleasure. “It’s not just a case of beating time! Conductors shape and balance the sound with subtle nuances of breathing and phrasing. It’s great to have the confidence of the choir

to do this effectively and produce music of real quality.” Over the years he has seen boys (and more recently girls) nurtured in realising their musical gifts and in developing their Christian faith. He says, “It’s great to see children join at the age of 8 and leave as mature adults to go to the next stage of their education with a sense of fulfilment and purpose as a result of their time in the choir. I would encourage parents to consider this opportunity.” You can find more information about Beverley Minsters music and service times on www.beverleyminster.org.uk Photos: Mervyn King, who is also an accomplised artist, pictured with his paintings and sculptures which he has exhibited in Beverley Minster.

Health & Wellbeing

Step right up! It’s the miracle cure we’ve all been waiting for.

It can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. It’s free, easy to take, has an immediate effect and you don’t need a GP to get some. Its name? Exercise. Exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, but for too long we’ve neglected to take our recommended dose. Our health is now suffering as a consequence. This is no snake oil. Whatever your age, there’s strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and even happier life. People who do regular activity have a lower risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. “If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health promotion consultant. Health benefits Given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should

10

all be physically active. It’s essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life into old age. It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have: • up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease/ stroke • up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes • up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer • up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer • a 30% lower risk of early death • up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis • up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture • a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults) • up to a 30% lower risk of depression • up to a 30% lower risk of dementia What counts? To stay healthy, adults should try to be active daily and aim to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week through a variety of activities. For most, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity part of everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better, and taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier. For tips on building physical activity and exercise into your day, whatever your age, read Get active your way by visiting

Travel Sailing from Hull

Cruising 2017/18...

The cruise lines are now on sale for next year and beyond, for the best deal plus your choice of cabin now is the time to secure your cruise. Here is a small insight as to what is on offer. For more information it M/V Marco Polo is always good to talk to an expert to take advantage of the best option as often deals can be confusing. CRUISE & MARITIME ~ popular as they offer a great selection of non flying cruises including sailing from our very own port of Hull. Paying for 1 guest and the 2nd sharing going for FREE is a bargain. Book now you will not get a better price sailing from Hull as our port is always the quickest to sell out. FRED OLSEN is a hugely popular cruise line with British guests. For 2017 they have created a number of very different itineraries which are proving very popular with regular cruisers looking for new ports of call. Instead of the Norwegian Fjords how about the Swedish Fjords or Danish Waterways? Or closer to home the Lochs & Isles of Scotland? River cruising is also opening up more with the shallow keel of Breamar being able to navigate rivers to the heart of the city for example Bordeaux, Antwerp and Hamburg plus allowing you to get up close to some very special events for example Seville’s April Fair’s Fireworks display. CUNARD are offering a 5% saving whilst sister company P&O up to 15%. ROYAL CARRIBEAN mega ships, book a Suite and save up to £1000, a balcony stateroom up to £600 or an interior or ocean view up to £300. VIKING RIVER CRUISES a 7 night Danube Cruise flying from Humberside from £895 per person. Whilst RIVIERA offer limited cabins on each cruise without any supplement for single travellers but you need to book very quickly. THE RIVER CRUISE LINE via P&O North Sea Ferries have selected sailings on Serenade have free excursions & drinks included. If you are a non flyer looking for something different, take the ferry to Rotterdam and join one of the lovely HOLLAND AMERICA Ships in either Rotterdam or Amsterdam they offer various sailings throughout the summer. We have a ship visit with lunch in August if you fancy a preview? Adventure Cruising The options are endless and there is a cruise out there for everyone you just need guiding towards the right ship to suit you. We are always honest with our opinion based on real experience as both myself and Lynne have first hand experience of more than 150 Antarctica ships that ply the Oceans & Rivers of the world from ships that take a maximum of 24 guests to those catering for 5,300! We can also charter you your own ship for 4 to 12 guests allowing you to create your own itinerary with or without crew subject to your sailing qualifications, Cruising always is perceived as a luxury! At Exhausted River Cruising? the end of the day luxury is a sense, an emotion and anything that makes you happy and content whatever the cost may be. East Riding carers invited to get involved in national survey Carers in the East Riding are encouraged to share their views on the help and support available to them as part of a national survey. The survey has been launched by central government who are trying to gain a better understanding of the needs of unpaid carers across the country as they develop their new Carers Strategy. Alistair Burt, minister for social care and communities, said: “Carers make an invaluable contribution to society. I have met many brilliant carers who have told me it can be a struggle to keep all the plates spinning and make time for themselves. Through the Government’s new carers’ strategy, we want to support carers to do the best for their loved ones and have a life of their own beyond caring.”

16 The engagement exercise, which runs from now

until 30 June 2016, wants the views of carers and those who support them, including families, employers, clinicians, social care professionals, and educators, about what more can be done to support and help them lead a full life without compromising on their caring responsibilities. Councillor Richard Harrap, East Riding of Yorkshire Council portfolio holder for adult and carer services, said: “Carers make an invaluable contribution to the lives of those they care for so it is vital that they too receive the care and support that they need to live their lives to the full while fulfilling their caring roles.

“I would encourage as many people as possible in the East Riding, including unpaid carers and those they care for, to complete this survey and play a part in this gathering of evidence to help shape future policy.” To complete the survey or to find out more visit the ‘consultations’ section on the Department of Health website at www.gov.uk or follow the link https:// socialcare.blog.gov.uk/2016/03/18/carers-strategynews/

Where a friendly, face to face service comes as standard Hedon Insurance is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority

A Cottingham Success Story Several years ago, in the face of increasing competition from direct insurers, the internet and comparison sites; Hedon Insurance made a brave decision. They decided to take insurance ‘local’! They now have four offices around the region and are building a loyal band of happy customers with their commitment to face to face, local service. ‘Insurance is a complex area’ explains Hedon Insurance Director, Paul Welsh ‘I cannot imagine why people would want to arrange it direct, themselves and expose themselves to all the risks & pitfalls of not arranging it properly. By dealing with a local broker you get the benefit of being face to face with someone who is dealing with the subject every day of their lives someone, who is working for you on your behalf.’ There is a perception that you may finish up paying more via a local broker. This tends not be the case however, as a broker’s ‘local’ knowledge can often work in their favour – such as in areas which have either flooded or are regarded to be at a high risk of flooding. ‘The best way to convince people that we are competitive is for them to give us a try. In our main markets, we are rarely more than a few pounds away from the best internet quote and often, because of our local knowledge, we can be cheaper. When you add in the value of dealing with somebody, face to face, locally (and how important that could be in the event of a claim) – we believe that a using a broker is great value call.’ Paul added.

BUSTED ARE BACK Full original line-up of Charlie Simpson, Matt Willis & James Bourne

FIRST TOUR IN 12 YEARS SHEFFIELD ARENA Tuesday 17th May 2016 “A year ago James and I got together and just started hanging out … and it felt really different, somehow, to how it had ten years ago. And the idea crept into my head after all that time apart: what would Busted look like today?” – Charlie Simpson

For the gig Busted will return to the home of their biggest triumph, the venue where anybody last saw them – Wembley Arena. It was here that they broke a record in 2004 by selling out an incredible 12 shows. And it’s here that they will make their long overdue comeback.

It’s the reunion they said could never happen - even the members themselves have admitted it. But today Busted announce their return to the world of pop in 2016. Matt, James and Charlie are returning to the road with a full UK arena tour, and they are working on brand new Busted music for the first time since 2004.

“We’ve done this crazy, exciting, adventurous, scenic route back to being Busted. And now we’re here, we’re all super-re-energised” – James Bourne

“For me, there’s a huge sense of unfinished business … I always thought in my heart we’d do Busted again, but that it was just a matter of when and how” – Matt Willis

24

Wednesday 11th May 2016 will be their first show together in 12 years – and the first time in 12 years anyone will be able to see the three members play all their greatest hits together live – among them the simply huge, unforgettable smashes “What I Go To School For”, “Crashed The Wedding”, “You Said No”, “Air Hostess” and “Year 3000.”

Busted will play Sheffield Arena on Tuesday 17th May and the tickets go on general sale 9am Friday 13th November priced £41.25 & £45.65 (including booking fee) through www.sheffieldarena.co.uk or the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56.

BUDDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY GARDENERS INVITED TO TAKE PART IN NEW GARDEN FESTIVAL Schools and community groups across Hull and East Yorkshire are being invited to take part in an exciting new garden festival being organised by Heritage Landscape and Garden Centre, near Melton. It’s hoped that with the help of the garden centre’s own team of experts, and local radio and TV personalities, entrants will be spurred on to produce some fantastic gardens, the theme of which is entirely their own interpretation of ‘Nature’s Finest’.

28

The event, the Yorkshire Garden Festival, is free to enter and is open to nurseries and schools, as well as local community groups. A pallet will be left with the school entrants so their creations can be transported to the garden centre however the community groups will have a plot available to them on site from the beginning of April.

They will then be judged by both the general public and a team of gardening experts over a series of dates throughout the festival, which

starts on 30th April and runs until 29th August. Each community garden will receive £500 worth of credit towards plants and materials, schools will each receive £100 towards their creation, and at the end of the festival there will be the chance to win The People’s Award. Heritage Landscape Centre is one of Yorkshire’s premier landscaping companies with an awardwinning coffee shop and restaurant. It hosts water features, garden buildings and endless amounts of inspiration!

Gardening Ian Ashbridge, the festival’s Creative Director, says of the inaugural festival: “We are delighted with the response we have already had from schools and community groups across the area. We have wanted to work with the local community for some time now and already work with charities and find it so rewarding. “We know that there is so much talent out there that remains untapped and unrecognised and so we decided to do something about it. We’ve got the facilities here and want to make the best use of them. “There is nothing like this. In fact the nearest Garden Festival which runs along these lines is in Scotland so we would encourage everyone to get Hull and East Yorkshire firmly on the map.”

Work to install average speed cameras on A1079 nears completion Work to install state-of-the-art average speed cameras on a stretch of the A1079 between the Shiptonthorpe and Dunswell roundabouts is nearing completion. They have replaced outdated cameras on the Market Weighton bypass, on Arras Hill near Market Weighton and on sections of the Beverley bypass. The new cameras will be fully operationally in the next few weeks after a period of testing. They have been designed and installed by national contractor Vysionics at its recommended locations on behalf of Safer Roads Humber, a partnership which includes East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Humberside Police and Humberside Fire & Rescue Service.

32

Partnership spokeswoman Ruth Gore said: “The cameras take a series of readings along the road and only drivers exceeding the speed limit will be detected and sent a fixed penalty notice (speeding tickets). We urge all motorists to drive safely and carefully within the speed limit at all times.”

The previous 12 cameras - dating from 2006 – have been replaced with digital ones because they had passed their lifespan and still relied on film which had to be developed. The new cameras will ensure the speed limit can be enforced along the whole route rather than just at set points and they are costing Safer Roads Humber £890,000, which covers the installation and also maintenance for the next eight years. Councillor Andy Burton, portfolio holder for planning, highways and transportation at east Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We want roads in this region to be as safe as they can possibly be; in other areas of the country, the installation of average speed cameras has helped to reduce casualties on the roads. “We want motorists to keep to the speed limits on our roads, which will help keep them and other road users safe and keep collisions to a minimum. We are confident that this new equipment will help to achieve these aims. “Before the installation of the current cameras, the A1079 was classed as a medium to high risk road by Euro RAP ( the independent international system for rating roads across the continent). Between 2002 and 2004, there had been 71 crashes along this section of road, resulting in 138 people being injured, of whom 36 were seriously or fatally injured. Since the cameras were installed in 2006, the number of injury crashes and the severity of injury have been greatly reduced. “We want to maintain these greatly improved statistics, which is why it was essential that the outdated cameras were replaced by modern equipment.” PC Simon Carlisle, casualty reduction officer for Humberside Police, said: “Average speed cameras allow motorists to manage their speeds considerably better. They prevent what we call ‘camera surfing’, where motorists speed up after passing a known camera site, but equally they prevent the triggering of an old style camera by a brief lapse in concentration. Motorists will be able to maintain a more constant, steady and safe speed.”

Erik and Kris Wilson 0800 028 7878 or 07455 346233 kande.wilson@chipsaway.co.uk www.chipsaway.co.uk/erikwilson

Safer Roads Humber is reminding motorists that all existing speed limits on the A1079 will remain the same as they are now, including the 60mph limit on the climb up Arras Hill. There are signs at regular intervals to remind motorists of the average speed cameras.

What’s On

East Riding Mumblers Guide to What’s On The Hull & East Riding Mumbler has just had its first birthday! A year ago I launched the website to create one place where parents and carers could go to find out what’s going on for babies and children in and around Beverley & Hull. It lists everything from weekly playgroups and classes to local days out ideas and family events. It’s grown and evolved over the last year to now have over 1200 things listed on it! I have been overwhelmed by how much there is to do in this area and feel very lucky to be raising a family here. I’m holding a Family Fun Day this month on Sunday 24th April, 1.30-4pm at Dunswell Sports Hall. There will be bouncy castles, stalls and entertainment plus a program throughout the afternoon of taster sessions from local baby and children’s classes. You can come along and try as any as you like, from baby music to toddler dance and football. This is a great way to see what some of the local children’s classes are like and if your child enjoys them. Full details and timetable of classes are on the Mumbler website homepage, I hope to meet some of you there!

Also this month we have another bank holiday weekend to look forward to. The big local events are the Tour de Yorkshire setting off from Beverley on the Friday, the East Riding Country Fair in Driffield and there is also a large World War 2 Spectacular at Fort Paull. Lots of other local attractions have special family events on so check the Mumbler website Events Calendar to see if there’s anything you fancy. Also happening this month are the City of Culture Roadshows. Their team are going out to venues across the city for you to find out more about 2017 and ask any questions you have. Find them at: North Point Shopping Centre 14th/15th April, The Orchard Centre 22nd/23rd April, The University of Hull 26th/27th April, East Park 30th April/1st May, Octagon Centre 6th/7th May, Beverley Market 11th/12th May, Pearson Park 21st/22nd May. There will also be shorter drop-in sessions at Kingswood Health Centre 6th April, Prospect Centre 7th April, Ings Library 8th April, St. Margaret’s Welcome Centre 12th April, Gipsyville Multi Purpose Centre 13th April, Fred Moore Library 18th April, North Hull Community Centre 19th April, Highlands Health Centre 20th April, St Stephen’s Neighbourhood Centre 9th May, Victoria Dock Village Hall 14th May, Bilton Grange Health Centre 17th May, Walton Street Market 18th May, Elliott Chappel Health Centre 19th May. At the time of writing, I am so excited because I have finally set up to do a regular online groceries shop – and my first delivery is tonight between 9 and 10pm. I know this is probably really sad and you’ve probably been doing it for years, but I can’t help myself!! Is it wrong to feel so proud of myself?!!!!

“As the world speeds up through technological advances, it’s important to remember the slower things in life.” I couldn’t agree more! I read this in a great article in the Huffington Post about Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author Tom Friedman who was talking about the importance of actually talking to people in person (i.e. not email or text conversations!), parenting and relationships. He said: “The faster the world gets ... the more you need to step back and appreciate everything that’s old and slow. The really important stuff today, as the world gets faster, is all the stuff you can’t download.” This is so true. We need to take time to take a breath every now and then, savour what we have, talk to each other and, I know this is controversial, maybe even switch off our phones!!

IT’S GARDENING SEASON! Yes the Spring is finally here and so it’s time 38 to get back out there, cut the grass, trim the bushes and just generally have a good tidy up in the garden. A friend of mine was just commenting on how she hadn’t been organised enough last Autumn to hack everything back and so is now really jealous of everyone else’s really nice gardens! Perhaps she needs some pointers from the first ever Yorkshire Garden Festival that’s being hosted at the Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre in Melton from the end of April right through until the end of August. Community projects, schools and charities across Hull & East Yorkshire are all being asked to design a garden to enter the competition. Who needs Chelsea and Harrogate when we’re about to have our very own festival here?!! Actually I could do with some advice on moving my hydrangeas!

Feel good in the skin you live in…

Appleton House, 3a Wednesday Market (opposite Boyes), Beverley. HU17 0DG.

NEW ADDITION TO OUR BODY SCULPTING TREATMENTS Welcome the low level laser therapy (LLLT)

Yes, we have yet another new arrival here at Rachel’s Beauty World, so it’s time to shift that fat and shape that body. So what is LLLT? LLLT is a totally non-invasive body contouring treatment, also known as the ‘lunchtime lipo’ due to the fact that there is no down time and no risk How does it work? LLLT emits low levels of laser energy at two different wavelengths, 940nm and 650nm, the first goes deep into the dermis of the skin and the second targets the epidermis of the skin. In the dermis the fat cells are targeted, breaking down the triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol. These are then taken away by the lymphatic draining system. This process only targets the fat cells and therefore does not affect the surround structures such as the skin or blood vessels. Epidermis of the skin is stimulated simultaneously by the other laser which increases circulation and promotes metabolism helping the body contouring process What will I feel like during the treatment? It is a very relaxing treatment, many people fall asleep. You will feel a warm, pleasant sensation.

Botox is Out - Radiofrequency Skin Tightening is Definitely IN Radiofrequency, the healthy alternative for skin rejuvenation And so say a rising number of celebrities that are opting for this treatment over the jab. Unlike botox, which injects a toxin into the skin making the muscles relax, RF (also called the Collagen Wave) kick-starts the body into producing collagen which, for most people, goes into decline at the age of 25. The cumulative effect of collagen stimulation results in tighter, younger looking skin. For best results this treatment is combined with the “Madonna Treatment” for a radiant looking complexion. This is an oxygen facial given after the RF treatment. Pressurised pure oxygen is used to push hyaluronic acid (the molecule that absorbs 1,000 times it molecular size in moisture) and antioxidants deep into your skin, rather than sitting on the surface like creams do.
