A poignant object is featured in Beverley’s First World War exhibition, “Keeping the Home Fires Burning: how the First World War was felt in Beverley”, which is currently on display in one of the newly refurbished exhibition rooms at the Beverley Guildhall. Albert Rice, father of well-known local figure, Bill Rice, carried a pair of nail scissors, together with a bundle of photographs, in his wallet while he was serving at the front. In March 1918 he was shot, but the bullet was deflected by the nail scissors and hit his lung instead of his heart, thus saving his life. The wallet and the photographs, all bearing the bullet hole, have been kept by Albert’s family and can be seen in the exhibition. There is also a bundle of letters sent home by Albert while he was recovering in a German POW hospital. Albert Rice’s wallet has kindly been loaned to the museum by his family for the duration of the exhibition. Gillian Rice, Albert’s granddaughter said: “Our family is very ordinary and Albert was just a private so we feel very lucky to have this amazing connection with such an important part of history.” “Keeping the Home Fires Burning” will run until 28 November 2014. Beverley Guildhall is open from 10am to 4pm every Friday, and from 10am to 4pm on Wednesdays until the end of October. - Admission is free.

For parents and carers of disabled children, new ideas have been included this year. Adapted cycles have been bought and will be used for rides along the north promenade in Bridlington as part of the All Ride! scheme, while there is also the opportunity to take part in canoeing. Councillor Julie Abraham, portfolio holder for children, young people and education at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Parents and carers can find it a challenge to keep their children entertained during the summer holidays. “This booklet could prove to be a parent or carer’s best friend throughout the summer as it gives details of all the fun activities that will keep children happy.” The activities included in School’s Out 2014 are also available online at: www.eastriding.gov.uk/schoolsout Please mention BEVERLEYMAG when responding to our advertisers. Independent Retailer Month

BeverleyMag JULY 2014

Support your Independent Shops. July is Independent Retailer Month, an annual UK wide campaign to increase footfall in towns and villages. It celebrates the important role that small, local, independent shops play within their local communities. We spoke to Amalia Booker, joint owner of Beverley home and gift store, Amanti, and founder of Independent Beverley. What is Independent Beverley? We’re a loose affiliation of small.businesses all of whom trade within Beverley. Our priority is to shout about all the great shops, cafes and restaurants in town. We want local people to remember we’re here and to use us as often as possible. And we want visitors to be able to find us too as we’re often tucked away in spots away from the main high street.

8

We have a website www.independentbeverley. co.uk which even has a map that you can follow to make sure you visit all the participating independent businesses.

How can people best support little shops? Go and seek them out. Go in – we’re nice and we love to see new people. And we don’t necessarily expect you to buy something, we’re happy to let you browse. Other than that, it’s just about doing what you can. Even buying a card, a cup of coffee or a bunch of bananas makes a difference. It doesn’t have to be your whole weekly shop. If people can choose where to put their pound, every penny that goes to an independent helps support that local business. What do independent shops contribute to the local economy? Most of us live in Beverley (so we spend here too) and we employ local people. We also use other local services from window cleaners to accountants. Research by the Centre for Local Economic Strategies shows that for every £1 spent locally, 50p to 70p flows right back into the local economy. The same £1 spent online or out of town sees only about 5p trickling back into the local economy.

What do independent shops offer? Personality, service and variety. Wouldn’t life be dull if every town had only the exact same shops? We’re the first to admit that supermarkets and chain shops have a role but you know that feeling when you stumble upon a great little shop? The joy of browsing at things you may not have seen before? The sense of having found something unique? That’s what independent shops really offer. Please mention BEVERLEYMAG when responding to our advertisers. Thank you.

GARDENING

Start Gardening with your Children! One of the best ways to get children interested in gardening and to keep them motivated is to give them their own garden patch. This can either be a small area in your garden or a container. If it’s a patch in your garden, it’s best to keep it small (especially for young kids) and be sure that it’s in the spot with the best soil and light. We want these gardens to be a success!

12

Containers are a good idea, because they can be moved around. This may be particularly helpful in inclement weather or to fit the plants’ sunlight needs. You can use proper plant pots or recycle jars or plastic containers. Have your child decorate the patch or the container to make it their own. They can make signs to label the plants and/or paint pebbles and rocks to put around their garden. And of course, they can decorate their plant pots. It is also best to have a proper set of gardening tools for your child (depending on age) as toy sets can be ineffective and break easily. If you have an old set, you can pass them on to your

BeverleyMag JULY 2014 child. If not, allow them to work with your tools. It’s a good way to acknowledge how important their work in the garden is to you.

Planting the right plants is important Depending on the amount of space you have, you can plant a variety of plants. Real crowd pleasers are colourful flowers, fragrant plants like sweet peas, mint, and lavender, and vegetables. Picky eaters might even be more likely to eat their vegetables if they’ve grown them themselves and have seen where they come from. To keep your child motivated, it’s a good idea to choose some plants that grow quickly so your child can see the fruits of their labour straightaway. Sunflowers are a must. You only need to plant one or two as they take up a lot of room. They will sprout within a week and be about two feet tall in a month. In late summer, you can collect their seeds to roast for a delicious snack. Radishes produce quick results. They germinate in as little as 3 days and are ready to eat in 20 to 30 days. Lettuce also is quick and reliable, germinating in about 7 days and taking between 30 to 50 days to grow depending on the variety. Other good options are snow peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes.

Minster’s Medieval Minstrels inspiration for new-look PizzaExpress in Beverley PizzaExpress is celebrating the launch of its exciting new-look restaurant in Beverley. Situated at North Bar Within, this relaxed and family friendly restaurant has been refurbished with an interior décor paying tribute to near-by historic Beverley Minster.

16

Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed – often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The characterful Medieval Minstrels found inside the magnificent Minster have become the source of inspiration behind the new artwork, which runs through the restaurant. Pendants and canvases focus on the distinctive Rose Window, another structural element found in the north and south transepts of the Church.

BeverleyMag JULY 2014 of delicious dishes are soups, salads, perfectly proportioned pizzas and Piadinas – bread pockets that are made using PizzaExpress’ famous dough and filled with fresh ingredients. For younger pizza-lovers, PizzaExpress’ Piccolo menu is full of tasty choices including ‘Create Your Own’ pizza. And for budding chefs looking to celebrate a birthday, a Pizza Making Party will see them transformed into pizzaiolas (or chefs) so they can stretch, toss and top their own pizza and play a game before sitting down to enjoy their culinary creations. And the restaurant runs free visits for local primary schools, turning the kitchens into classrooms. For more details visit www.pizzaexpress.com

Manager, Mandy Hurst, said, “We have a friendly and enthusiastic team who are looking forward to welcoming everyone to our beautifully refurbished restaurant over a delicious pizza.” PizzaExpress has been dishing up fresh, handmade pizza to Beverley since 1998 and has a fantastic menu including a delicious new range of seasonal treats with a Leggara Summer Salad at just 315 calories; two summery desserts – a Strawberry and Cream Glory and Lemon and Blueberry Glory; and The Hugo – a refreshing cocktail made with Prosecco, mint leaves, elderflower and a slice of lemon over ice. PizzaExpress has also introduced even more glutenfree choices to its menu. Also available at Beverley is a new Express Lunch menu offering quick, tasty and great value lunch options to eat in or take away. Among the range

Hot Cruising News..

Everyone loves a local departure whether sailing from Hull or flying from Humberside and I am delighted to tell you we have new sailings for 2015 just announced. Cruise & Maritime who have operated cruising from the port of Hull for several years, have just announced their sailings for next year. I am delighted to report we are really privileged next year to have three summer sailings from our home port in late June & July. As well as the usual Norwegian Fjord cruise departing on 27 June, the first cruise sails on 15 June to Iceland and the third is the Baltic Capitals departing 5 July. It just gets better! All three of these cruises can be bought at 50% on the early booking offer. E.g. the 8 night Fjord Cruise starts from just £549 whilst, the 12 night Iceland or Baltic cruise start from £829 per person. Cabins are selling fast and subject to availability when booking. What ship is this on I hear you ask? The ship is the Azores, her former name was the Athena and she is a traditional ship carrying 550 guests. Having been on board this ship several years ago I can tell you she is light and spacious and I can happily show you photographs. She has been refurbished recently but the size of cabins etc remains the same. Why not pick up the phone now? We are happy to furnish you with further details and help you choose your cabin. Perhaps traditional cruising is not for you and you do not mind flying to join your ship? Well next summer we have two super Mediterranean departures flying from Humberside airport for 7 nights sailing with Norwegian Cruise Lines who offer freestyle cruising. What is Freestyle? Freestyle allows you to eat where and when you choose, on much bigger ships with a resort feel. You always feel as if you are staying in a floating hotel, on a room only basis, with a great choice of venues to dine in when you decide to eat. This is a great choice for all ages including families & younger adults, as they are catered for with a super range of facilities to meet their needs whilst on board. Below are the two departures 31 May sails from Barcelona allowing you to visit the cities of Naples, Rome, Florence/Pisa, Cannes & Palma. 29 August sails from Venice takes you to the Eastern Mediterranean ports of Dubrovnik, Athens, Kusadasi & Split. The above two cruises will be operated on a BA flight which has only 98 aircraft seats. Accommodation ranges from an inside cabin up to balcony suites, offering a price range to suit everyone. Call for further details. These are of course just a couple of new options available from a wide range of land based holidays, river and ocean cruises that can be organised from our local port & airport. Remember for all your travel arrangements, give my team a call. We are experienced in all corners of the world and our enjoyment is full filling your travelling desires & aspirations. We look forward to hearing from you.

WALKING FOR HEALTH IN BEVERLEY

22

East Riding of Yorkshire Council runs a programme of health walks aimed mainly at people who take little or no exercise. It is part of the national Walking for Health initiative offering free walks for beginners. East Riding of Yorkshire council’s Sport, Play and Arts Service have introduced a new 45 minute walk in Beverley which is aimed to ‘bridge the gap’ from the 30 minute walk (which is held on the first Wednesday of each month) to a one hour walk. The new 45 minute walk will be held on the third Wednesday of every month (18 June, 16 July and 20 August) from Beverley Leisure Complex. After the walk there is a chance to socialise and have refreshments. Everyone is welcome. The walk will be of low intensity and is a great opportunity to get some exercise whilst getting a glimpse of the local surroundings. Adam Gibson, East Riding Community Sports Coach and walk leader says: “Walking is a great way to get exercise, get some fresh air and meet new people. “The new 45 minute walk finds that middle ground between the 30 minute walk being too easy and the one hour walk which is faster paced, being too intense”. If you would like more information or to book a place on the Beverley 45 minute walk please contact Adam Gibson, East Riding Community Sports Coach on (01482) 392528 or email: adam.gibson@eastriding.gov.uk

FREE NHS HEALTH CHECKS ACROSS THE EAST RIDING Free NHS health checks offered to people aged between 40 and 74 years are being rolled out across the whole of the East Riding, following a pilot scheme in some parts of the area. The five-yearly checks are now available from providers across the region, including some GP practices, pharmacies, East Riding of Yorkshire Council leisure centres and by the health trainers. The checks will assess a person’s risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and dementia. By taking early action, steps can be taken to improve health and help to prevent the onset of these conditions. As this service aims to identify people at risk of developing cardiovascular conditions, anyone who is already being treated by a health care professional for any of the conditions listed or has been prescribed medication for these conditions, such as 28 statins, does not need to be re-assessed and is therefore not eligible for the service. Checks take 20 to 30 minutes and are based on straightforward questions and measurements, such as age, gender, family history, height, weight and blood pressure. There will also be a simple blood test to measure cholesterol levels. After the check is completed, the results will be discussed and advice will be offered, such as how to get help to give up smoking, to be more active, to eat healthily or to cut back on alcohol. If necessary, the person who has had the check can be referred to other services. The results of the check will be passed to their GP.

Last year the pilot project carried out more than 6,500 health checks for people living in the East Riding. Now it is hoped that thousands more will take up the offer. Residents wanting to have a check can find out more about the service at www.eastriding.gov.uk/health-checks Councillor Jonathan Owen, chairman of the East Riding health and wellbeing board, said: “I cannot urge people strongly enough to take advantage of having a health check. “Catching the early signs of conditions that may develop later in life means that steps can be taken at an early stage to prevent illness developing and simple changes to lifestyle can often have significant impact on living a longer, healthier life.” Local providers of free NHS health checks in the East Riding are:General Practice (GPs):Holme and Bubwith Medical Group, Holme on Spalding Moor. East Riding of Yorkshire Council Leisure Services:Beverley Leisure Complex, Hornsea Leisure Centre; Humber NHS Foundation Trust:East Riding Community Hospital, Beverley. Pharmacies:East Riding high street branches of Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy and Superdrug.

Beverley Puppet Festival Returns for 6th Year The eagerly awaited Beverley Puppet Festival returns to East Yorkshire from 11th to 13th July with a full programme for children and adults, now available online via the new festival website and in the newly released brochure. The festival’s Artistic Director, Anna Ingleby, said: ‘It has been two years since Beverley Puppet Festival livened up the town’s streets and its return has been highly anticipated. Tickets are now on sale at Beverley Tourist Information Centre and Beverley Old Bookshop plus, in a festival first. we are now selling tickets online via our brand new website www.beverleypuppetfestival. com and on our facebook page. “We have endeavored to ensure the weekend features acts for all ages, with 24 ticketed shows for children and adults plus children’s workshops, tickets for which are also on sale now. We also have an exciting programme of street theatre in Beverley Town Centre, which is free.” An alien invasion of the woolly kind will launch Beverley Puppet Festival on 11th July, when Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre’s Socks in Space lands in

Beverley. Described as ‘The Abbott & Costello of the sock world’ by Time Out, the satirical show has received rave reviews. Headline evening shows also include the highly acclaimed Stephen Mottram’s Animata – In Suspension and Sokobauno’s Galoshins and The Horseman’s Word. Due to the popularity of adult evening performances, a brand new programme of daytime shows has also been added. 99.8 KCFM

Check Out Our Brand New Look!

We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?

Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)

There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in

Beverley Folk Festival Review: Billy Bragg A lot has changed since I last saw Billy Bragg, he was then an up and coming NME favourite and the ‘Bard of Barking’ but 30 years later he is now nicknamed the ‘Beard of Barking’ and now regarded as a more mature and reflective ‘Folk singer’. Billy has been a personal favourite for many years though I must admit losing track of his career since the early 1990’s. To have the chance to review Billy and maybe gain an interview was too good an opportunity to turn down and so I was eagerly looking forward to seeing him at Beverley Folk Festival. The set would feature a wide range of Bragg classics, songs from his ‘Woody Guthrie era’ and also songs from his recent critically acclaimed “Tooth and Nail” album. Any thoughts that Billy was getting soft was quickly dispelled as he opened the set with audience favourites “World turned upside down” and “To have and to have not”, two songs from his early years. This was our Billy thrashing on his guitar though maybe not quite as aggressively as before. His voice has also mellowed and got stronger.

34

Though he has never been the most tuneful of singers he would go on to sing a number of his more mellow love songs throughout his set. He has probably wrote as many love songs as the political songs he is more known for and during his set we heard “Levi Stubbs Tears”, “Greetings to the New Brunette” and ‘Milkman of human kindness”. Recent album track “Handyman blues” also displayed his more reflective side. Like many of us Billy may struggle to master rudimental DIY but he knows how to write a love song for his wife. Wouldn’t that be a better quality to offer someone? You cannot discuss Billy without mentioning the politics and it highlighted how much has changed since the 1980’s. He now sees “Which side are you on”, written during the miners strike and the fierce ideological struggle of 1984-85 as something still relevant to the current struggle of individuals taking on the multinational corporations aiming to spread fracking across the nation. Before “Power in the Union” he highlighted the vast changes since the 1970’s and 1980’s. In these days of zero hour contracts there are few people willing to support individuals against the state or big corporations and maybe unions are needed more than ever? As well as the love songs and the politics the other thing he retains is his banter. I suppose this developed in his earliest days as he swapped or tuned his guitar alone in front of audiences. He is still very witty and to a certain extent, by default, he was almost one of the first stand-up comedians of his era. He was a ‘Protest singer’ but could entertain his fans and deal with hecklers better than many actual comedians. This was a highly enjoyable set rounded off with “New England” and the majority of the people within the marquee joining in with the chorus. Many of the songs may be 30 years old but he is still a very important talent and who else ever raises questions about the world we live in? Words and photography: Chris Warkup

Women are smarter than men it’s official.

Did you know?

l UK diners are creating a ‘fast dining’ culture with two in five (41 per cent) now booking restaurants through mobiles and tablets. l Women are leading the trend, accounting for 61 per cent of bookings from smart devices, compared to just 39 per cent of men. l Two fifths (44 per cent) make reservations to a new restaurant for the first time through a mobile device. l Brits spend an average of 11 minutes browsing the website before making their booking.

l Two in five (41%) diners now booking restaurants through tablets or mobiles, compared to 7% in 2011, according to new research. The research, based on over 850,000 Bookatable users, was carried out in conjunction with the launch of the new Bookatable app to better understand the dining and restaurant booking behaviour of Britons.[source www.bookatable. com] There’s no doubt in my mind that the figures will be skewed towards London and the South East - but where they lead the rest of us will surely be following. FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. MIND YOUR MANNERS

38

I get so frustrated by bad manners. Don’t you? It takes nothing to hold a door open for someone behind you, to smile and say thank you, to wave in acknowledgement when a car pulls in to let you go by, to apologise if you accidentally bump into someone. It’s polite! I’m sure you’ve experienced doing your weekly shop and a till operator in the supermarket insists on describing in detail what they did last night or what they’re planning to do at the weekend to another shop assistant. Doesn’t it drive you crazy?! Then when they give you the wrong change or they’ve put the same item through twice, whilst they are more than apologetic, I find myself saying (in my head!) “Well, if you’d been concentrating on what you were doing, it probably wouldn’t have happened!” Would it be rude if I said it out loud?! Anyway, my point is - be nice and be considerate. Come on – it’s not hard and good manners cost you nothing!

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

We’ve probably all heard about the concept Paying It Forward – performing a random act of kindness for the sole purpose of helping someone in need or cheering someone up. It’s a great model to live by and it’s really not hard to do. Too many people get caught up in their own lives and have tunnel vision about what’s going on around them. Just like you remember someone who has been really rude to you, you also remember the person who gave you a smile when you needed it most, helped you up when you tripped over, gave you a one pound coin for the supermarket trolley because you had no change, paid for your coffee when you realised your purse was in your other handbag. It doesn’t have to be much – but these small acts of kindness make the whole world seem like a much nicer place to live in.
