Dear Readers, Hello and welcome to the August edition of your Beverley Mag! Now that the children are enjoying their summer holidays from school, lets hope that the lovely weather continues. This month our ‘What’s on’ guide will provide you with plenty of ideas for days out around the local area, as there are loads of festivals and summer celebrations going on. So all you need to do is pack a picnic and head off for the day! This month we are delighted to launch something completely new – ‘Restaurant Week’. We have teamed up with local restaurants and cafes to offer you some great offers during our first ‘Restaurant Week’ which will take place from Monday 18th to Thursday 2st August. Check out the feature in this month’s magazine (further details are also on our face book page). With many varied menus on offer, there is sure to be something to suit everyone, so why not treat yourself and your family and eat out during ‘Restaurant Week’, not only saving you money, but also supporting our local food outlets. We also look at Education and Careers this month. Many student’s who left sixth form, college or university this summer, will be wondering what to do next. Some parents may have children starting school for the first time in the September term and looking at part time work or with the autumn term approaching you might like to learn a new hobby or skill. Whatever you are looking for, hopefully this feature will enlighten you and point you in the right direction. And finally…. Remember, we love to hear from you so if you have a story to tell, or a comment to make, please do get in touch. Kind regards

DONATION HELPS MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO TAKE UP THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD More young people in the East Riding will have an opportunity to take up the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, thanks to a generous donation from the Dewhirst Charitable Trust. East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth and family support service (YFS) is encouraging young people to take up the award, at either bronze, silver or gold levels. In order to enable the award to become more inclusive, the council is delighted to announce the establishment of the new Dewhirst Charitable Trust DofE Bursary Fund. Following a generous donation from the Dewhirst Charitable Trust, the fund will enable young people who would not normally become involved with DoE the opportunity to gain a bursary to help meet the cost of taking part. The award will be administered by the DofE Continued on Page 6

LOCAL NEWS

BeverleyMag AUGUST 2014

Yorkshire and Humber regional office and YFS. Tim Dewhirst, chairman of the Dewhirst Charitable Trust, said: “The Dewhirst Charitable Trust is very aware of the fantastic benefit young people gain from taking part in DofE. By establishing the new bursary fund we wish that one barrier to joining us – cost – has been removed.”

6

The DofE gives young people aged 14 to 24 the chance to develop skills for life and work. Councillor Julie Abraham, the council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “This is good news for those families and carers that might find the cost of doing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award prohibitive. The DoE Award opens many doors to higher education and employment opportunities and I am pleased that the generosity of the Dewhirst Charitable Trust will enable many more young people to gain this advantage as they move towards adulthood.” For details of how to apply for a Dewhirst Charitable Trust DofE Bursary, please contact Lynn Harris, DofE Award leader, youth and family support, County Hall, Beverley HU17 9BA, tel (01482) 392806 or email lynda.harris@eastriding.gov.uk.

The Good Food Guide Top Ten UK Restaurants Chef Simon Rogan’s Cumbrian restaurant, L’Enclume, has achieved the top spot in the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2014 for the very first time in the Guide’s annual ranking of the UK’s Top 50 restaurants. Restaurants in the Good Food Guide are awarded a cooking score between one and ten, with L’Enclume achieving the top score for the second year in a row. In the number two spot is Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, which has scored a perfect ten for six years in a row — longer than any other restaurant since the Guide adopted its current scoring system in 1998.

Currently, L’Enclume and The Fat Duck are the only two restaurants in the UK to achieve such a score. The 2014 edition has seen all ten restaurants from 2013 hang on to their Top 10 rankings, with Cornish favourite Restaurant Nathan Outlaw rising to number three. Restaurant Sat Bains, in Nottinghamshire, and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London are at the number four and five respectively. Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social in London remains at number six. Hibiscus, The Square and The Ledbury, also in London, have risen to spots seven, eight and nine respectively. Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is ranked at number ten.

GARDENING

Gardening Advice: What to do in August. The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?

12

Watering Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine. Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year. If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose!

BeverleyMag AUGUST 2014 If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily. Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean - green algae can be toxic to pets. Weeding Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth. Bulbs, flowers & containers Plant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus. Always use the side bulbs of tulips and daffodils as they make perfectly good bulbs in their own right. Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas. Put poinsettias in the dark for 14 hours a day and full light for the remaining 10 hours to encourage the formation of those cheery festive red bracts. Birds Birds need fresh water for bathing and drinking, especially during hot and dry spells, so keep supplies plentiful and regularly changed. Throw out mouldy food on bird tables and remember that birds cannot digest milk - it can kill them.

Northern Lights & Xmas.. MARION I am sure that everyone is enjoying our wonderful sunshine. Bookings are up for UK holidays including coach touring, self catering, hotels & holiday resorts e.g. Butlin’s is now very modern and attracting families & young adults. Even in the school holidays there are bargains to European destinations with Greek offers, as I write, starting at just over £200 per person for 7 nights. Autumn will no doubt be on us soon so this issue I wish to inspire you for the darker days we have to come. This coming winter sightings of the Northern Lights are alleged to be the best for the next decade. The lights are always present but not always visible. The highest chance of sightings are February/March but it really is the look of the draw. There are many different opportunities to take a break to search for the lights and below are a few options. Viewing from the air offers a very different perspective as you are above the arc looking down. Should the lights not come out to play the stars & planets are an exciting spectacle on there own. This is a short evening out and makes a great idea for a gift… and Christmas is coming! From Humberside airport this operates on Friday 20 February £199.95. (approximately 7 hours your evening includes pre flight talk with your astronomers before your flight). If you have time to spare a cruise might just be your preferred option . Dark night skies away from the lights on land can give you a great opportunity to see this spectacle. This option also gives you time to visit Norwegian towns in different season with no leaves on the trees, frozen waterfalls, white crisp snow and short days. You can cruise directly from the UK, or how about flying out to Norway and experiencing Hurtigruten on their working ships, plying the Norwegian Coast Line and popping into many unknown ports of call. If you haven’t quite the time for a cruise how about 3 nights in Lapland flying from Humberside airport on 19 February, from £859 pp. Lapland nicely leads me on to Christmas. How about a visit to Santa for the day on Sunday 14 December, Adults £489 & Children £469, or free if you are quick to book! This includes lots of activities & meals. For the grown ups there are Christmas Markets throughout the UK & Europe. In the UK I have to say a favourite of mine is Edinburgh which offers a blend of Scotland, Germany & Belgium, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Chatsworth hold a good market with over 300 stalls of crafts & produce each November. The house takes on a different theme each year and 2014 is “Alice’s Wonderland”. This is always a popular day out. Continental markets via Hull on the overnight sailing gives you many options for a weekend break. For instance Cologne has no less than 7 markets in its city. For the locals it is a real social occasion, creating a special atmosphere enjoying drinking and wonderful food, hot smoked salmon, Bratwurst, Gluhwein & hot chocolate, the list goes on… as well as the opportunity to buy unusual gifts for Christmas. Remember for all your travel arrangements, give my team a call. We are experienced in all corners of the world and our enjoyment is to fulfill your travelling desires & aspirations. We look forward to hearing from you. Marion

REFURBISHED BEVERLEY COMMUNITY MUSEUM OFFICIALLY OPENED

28

The refurbished Beverley Community Museum in the Guildhall has been officially opened by the chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Pat O’Neil. The refurbishment was funded by a £20,000 grant from Arts Council England, as part of the Joining up the Humber Museums Project, and the money has allowed the installation of new LED lighting in the museum, along with a much ‘lighter and brighter’ feel, together with new bespoke furniture and an opportunity to display new exhibitions. The museum has reopened with a display called ‘Tales of the Town’, which gives Beverley residents a chance to find out much more about the history and development of their town. It includes an exhibition called ‘Keeping the home fires burning’ – how the First World War affected Beverley. The other newly furnished room in the Community Museum features a new permanent exhibition called ‘Shaping Beverley : how 1300 years of history have shaped the town’. There are plenty of photographs of the town past and present and stories of how the town has changed over

BeverleyMag AUGUST 2014 the years as its previous industrial heritage gave way to a more residential and tourism-based focus. The exhibition also includes many objects from the Guildhall’s social history collection, and a fascinating chance to overlay maps to see graphically how the town has developed. Guildhall curator Fiona Jenkinson said : “We want local people to help develop this exhibition by bringing in their own photographs of the town and their own memories to add to the collection. The more we can get, the more and more fascinating this new exhibition will become.” Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said : “I am delighted with this refurbishment of the Community Museum, and the efforts of Fiona and her team to produce a truly fascinating exhibition which adds a great deal to the visitor experience at Beverley Guildhall.” The Community Museum is part of Beverley Guildhall, and is open – free of charge – on Fridays all year round from 10am – 4pm, and on Wednesdays until late October from 10am – 4pm. There will be an additional opening on Saturday 16 August from 10am – 4 pm to give visitors an extra chance to see the new exhibitions.

COUNCIL LAUNCHES ADULT LEARNING COURSE GUIDE

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will launch a new guide of adult learning courses, aimed at people aged 19 years and over, from the week commencing Monday, 28 July. This packed programme promotes a number of courses which are designed for people who want to improve their skills, gain new qualifications for work or entry to higher education and those who want to learn something completely new.

You might be considering turning a hobby into self-employment and wanting a taster course to see if it’s right for you. You might simply be looking to learn along with your children or want specific support to help you get a job.

Courses are delivered from specialist venues across the East Riding and range from one-day workshops to year-long qualifications and daytime classes to those on an evening and weekends.

With introductory short courses in computer skills, maths and English, a level 4 certificate in education and learning and a whole 34 range of family learning programmes, including junk jewellery making, there really is something for everyone.

The council is continuing to grow the number of apprenticeship courses on offer for young people and adults and has a range of vocational subjects to choose from. If you’ve recently been made redundant or are unemployed, the authority now has a specialist team who can advise you on the free training that you might be eligible for.

The majority of courses are designed for people who are aged 19 years and over, however study programmes

BeverleyMag AUGUST 2014 are also available for young people aged 16 19 who need additional support in getting a job, apprenticeship or place at college. Family learning courses are also on offer designed for parents and carers and their children aged five15 years.

Sara Arnold, employment, education and skills group manager, said: “It’s an exciting time to live and work in the East Riding right now and, with Hull being City of Culture in 2017 and the emerging renewable energy sector just around the corner, we want people in the East Riding to make sure they have the right skills to open up new opportunities in life and work and truly reach their potential. Join us and be among 4,000 local learners who benefit from education and training from us each year in our specialist centres and community venues.” Councillor Jane Evison, said: “Providing quality adult education provision is a key priority for the council in supporting and growing the local economy by ensuring our residents have the necessary skills to achieve their aims and ambitions, whether that be securing employment or access to higher education or in setting up their own business. “By combining our employment and skills and adult education teams into one service, we can now offer a one-stop-shop for all our learners’ needs and continue to build on the good work already achieved to date, including our low NEET (not in education, employment or training) level amongst youngsters and the improving economic picture.”

Look out for the new course guide dropping through every resident’s door on or around 28 July. EXTRA FUNDING WELCOMED FOR EAST RIDING SCHOOLS East Riding of Yorkshire Council has welcomed a decision by the Government to increase the amount of funding for its schools. Earlier this year the Government announced a funding increase for some of the worst funded authorities, but the East Riding’s allocation of £500,000 left it at the bottom of the education funding table. The council argued for a fairer funding settlement and Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart met the Schools Minister to ask him to reconsider the allocation. Now the Government has announced that the East Riding’s settlement will be increased to £1.8million. Kevin Hall, the council’s director of children, families and schools, welcomed the increase and thanked campaigners, including Mr Stuart and Councillor Julie Abraham, the council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, for their efforts in securing a fairer settlement.

“Schools across the East Riding will be pleased that the overall increase in the amount of funding available to schools has risen from £500,000 to £1.8million. This is a significant step in the right direction,” he said. “We would wish to acknowledge the hard work of Councillor Abraham in keeping funding issues in the East Riding to the forefront of the debate. “We are grateful to Graham Stuart MP, who has championed our cause and ensured that a principled and passionate debate about the equity of school funding has taken place within the select committee and in the House of Commons. The F40 group, which represents the worst funded local authorities in the country, has also been very active in fighting for fairer funding.” Councillor Abraham said: “I am pleased that the Government has recognised that the original allocation of funds did not take into account the circumstances of the East Riding and that there has now been a further announcement of an additional £1.3m for our children and young people.

FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

38

SUMMER FUN – OR CHILDCARE NIGHTMARE? The 6 week summer holidays are a doubleedged sword, aren’t they? It’s great not to have to do the school run every day – but there’s also the not-so-small matter of sorting out childcare so you can carry on working. If you haven’t already got a plan, don’t worry, just do one right now! Check out holidays clubs, although it can be expensive to rely on them for the whole time. See if you can “swap” children with your friends. If you’re lucky enough to have family living nearby, see if they can help out for a few days. And try not to feel guilty because you’re not spending as much time as you’d like with your children. Most of us try to take at least 2 weeks off. Just make sure that when you do, you’re not constantly checking your smartphone for emails that you feel you simply have to reply to. If you remember 2 things during your 2 weeks, remember these: YOU’RE ON HOLIDAY!!! Children grow up so quickly, take the time now and cherish the memories! EXERCISE – IT’S GOT TO BE DONE! No excuses this time. We’ve all got to exercise. Don’t just belong to a gym and never go. Don’t just have good intentions, actually do something. Go for a walk, a jog, a swim, a bike ride. Anything at all that gets your heart rate going. I’m as bad as anyone and my goal is to use the summer months to break my current cycle (no pun intended!). It’s been proven time and time again that exercise is a cure or prevention for many things. According to NHS figures, it reduces the risk of major illnesses, like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. It lowers the risk of an early death by up to 30%. And it increases self-esteem, energy, the quality of your sleep, helps stress and reduces the risk of depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Surely these are all things we want? I know I do.
