Dear Readers, Hello and welcome to the October edition of your Beverley Mag! My husband is looking forward to this as he is an avid collector of vintage, well he did get me!!!. There will be lots to see, do and buy at the Vintage Fair and I do recommend you pay it a visit if you have not been to one before - and best of all is it’s free to get in!!! This month we have two great features: In Safe Hands and yes dare I say it, we begin our Christmas Countdown. I know you will all gasp in shock and horror when you realise that we are only twelve shopping weeks away from the festivities!

POP IN TODAY TO SEE OUR HALLOWEEN CREATIONS
In this edition we also look at the new East Riding Theatre and their production of A Christmas Carol. I went down to the Theatre last week to have a look around and meet the cast of the production and was very impressed and I can’t wait to see them all on stage in our own theatre in Beverley. Please look out for a special competition coming in the next issue when you can win tickets to see A Christmas Carol yourselves. This issue also introduces Sharyn to our readers and we invite you to contact us with questions that she will answer directly and also through her new column. It is great to see that Beverley FM has taken another big step nearer to on air broadcasting - I listen every day on-line and can’t wait for them to go live so I can listen in my car too. And finally…. Remember, we love to hear from you so if you have a story to tell, or a comment to make, please do get in touch. Kind regards

BeverleyMag OCTOBER 2014
Radio Station Reaches First Milestone Beverley FM the new radio station for Beverley and surrounding villages reached its first major milestone recently with the installation of the specialised transmitter aerial. Sited in Molescroft, the aerial is designed to provide a clear signal that will reach all the communities to be served in Beverley and around East Yorkshire. Scheduled to come on-air within the next few months, Beverley FM volunteer staff are working very hard to get the broadcast studios completed and ready for live programmes.
6
It’s envisaged that Beverley FM will provide an exciting mix of programmes, music, entertainment, news, and sport, all with a distinctly local feel, 24 hours a day from studios in Beverley. If you would like to volunteer and become involved in this exciting new radio station project simply e-mail beverleyfm@gmail.com
Station director Dave Fewster who leads the group of local radio professionals, businessmen, and volunteers that won the broadcast licence from Ofcom in May of this year told Beverley Mag: “The installation is going very well indeed, we are on schedule and we anticipate being ready to start broadcasting on FM as soon as Ofcom tell us we can. During the next month our satellite links with our national and international news and weather provider will be completed, the main broadcast studios will be commissioned, and the transmitter will be ready for testing – it’s all very exciting!” Beverley FM is one of over 250 new not-for-profit community radio stations licenced by Ofcom throughout the UK. In the lead-up to going on-air, Beverley FM directors have also announced the appointment of the well-known local broadcasters Les Smith (pictured above) as Volunteer Coordinator, and Chris Bell (pictured right) as Programme Coordinator. Like all other staff at Beverley FM, both will serve in a voluntary capacity. “We are thrilled that both Les and Chris have joined the Beverley FM team. Both are consummate professionals with years of broadcast experience and who are totally committed to bringing the highest quality programme service to our listeners.” said Dave Fewster.

Sensory Garden for The Chandler Centre The Rotary Club of Beverley is supporting FiND (Families for Individual Need and Dignity) in the creation of a sensory garden at FiND2, at The Chandler Centre in Beverley.
8
FiND is an East Riding charity set up in 2001 by parents of young people with profound learning disability to provide fun activities during school holidays. FiND2 was opened in May 2010 as a day centre providing a person centred service, matching each student with a key worker undertaking activities to meet their individual needs.
BeverleyMag OCTOBER 2014 Beverley Rotary Club has donated £2,800 towards the sensory garden which it is hoped will be completed by the end of the year. The money was raised by the Club with events held over the last twelve months; Jonathan Le Vine, Club President during that year, said: ‘FiND is a wonderful local charity providing a unique service of which many local residents may be unaware. I am delighted that the Club is able to support them in this project which I am sure will enhance the lives of the young people using the facility and hopefully enhance its profile.’

GARDENING
Gardening in October Trees, shrubs and climbers Plant Trees (including fruit trees), hedges, shrubs and climbers, ensure they are well watered and check regularly to see they do not become loose. Firm in well, but beware over firming as this will drive out air from the soil and can be even more damaging than loose planting. Stake new plants if necessary to hold them firm against autumn winds. Move conifers, evergreens and deciduous hedges Move conifers, evergreens and hedges, digging in lots of organic matter around them. Water regularly, feed them in springtime with an organic fertiliser and if you live in an exposed or windy spot, stake them and protect with a windbreak of plastic mesh or something similar for the first year. Planting and moving any plant is far less traumatic for it whilst the soil is still warm. Dig as large a root ball as you can and wrap in hessian to move it with minimum disturbance. Ensure the new hole is large enough for the roots not to be squashed and the same depth as before. Remove the hessian gently, firm in the soil well with your feet as you fill the hole and water generously. Prune tall shrubs Prune tall shrubs such as lavatera and buddleja by about half to protect them against wind rock. Trim conifers again if necessary, making sure you do not cut into the old wood. Roses Remove any diseased, spindly, old and unproductive stems and remember to burn any diseased material. Tie new shoots
onto some form of support to prevent their thrashing about in autumn winds. Lavender Trim back lavender bushes if you haven’t already done so. Lawns Rule one - keep off when sodden! Established lawns - whilst the grass is still growing keep mowing once a fortnight with the blades on high for the final few cuts. If you haven’t had time, carry out your autumn lawn care programme - scarify (rake out the old dead grass and moss) by hand (hard work!) or with a machine, spike to improve drainage again either by hand with a garden fork or with a machine, add a top dressing of soil/sand/compost mixed according to your soil type (ask for advice at your garden centre) and feed with autumn weed and moss killer. This low-nitrogen preparation strengthens grass for winter; do not use spring lawn feed as this encourages grass to grow and it may not survive the cold. After all this your lawn will look dreadful, but fear not, it will benefit enormously from the regime. Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and broken edges too. New lawns October is the last chance for sowing grass seed and just about the best time for laying turf. Good preparation is vital for either: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic continued on page13

Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Butt the turves together as tightly as you can and fill any gaps with sieved soil. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks. Perennials Plant new ones - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant hardy perennials so their roots have a chance to become established before winter and do ensure you choose plants that are appropriate for your soil type! Divide large ones such as daylilies and peonies once they have finished flowering. Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of organic matter and water generously. Remember some perennials, such as peonies, do not take kindly to being disturbed so tread carefully! Late flowering perennials such as asters are best left until spring for dividing. Cut back those that have died down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring. Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts cause any damage.

Support tall flowers - autumn can be windy so make sure any tall flowers are supported. Collect seed heads - collect seed heads from perennials, alpines, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have collected is fantastically rewarding, but be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry. Protect alpines from the wet and clear leaves from around them - leaves left around alpines will encourage disease, so clear dead leaves regularly. Whilst alpines, not surprisingly, don’t mind the cold, they do object to excessive wetness, so you may need to put an open ended cloche or something similar over your plants if you have a particularly wet spell of weather. Alaska ...
Alaska is one of my favourite spots in the world I hope that the following will inspire you too! There is no better way to enjoy your first visit than aboard a cruise ship. 1st morning at sea: Although I went to bed exhausted from an exciting day on land yesterday I woke at 6am not wanting to completely open my eyes but I could not resist the awesome view stirring in through our balcony doors. At this point, I was so pleased that we had paid the premium for this cabin, situated on the port side sailing south in wonderful sunshine, but entering College Fjord and turning east the sun shining on the mountainside was a sight not to miss. I quickly pulled on my jeans and a fleece not wanting to waste another moment, As we approached the head of the ford the ship turned parallel to the face of the glacier and halted for a good 45 minutes giving the whole length of the ship a magnificent view of the 2 mile wide Harvard Glacier. We ventured up onto deck which was surprisingly uncrowded, here we were treat to the sound of the glacier cracking followed by huge chunks carving and tumbling into the icy waters below. Seals where basking in the sun on the glacial floats dotted all around the fjord. The entire mountain tops where in full view a rare sight we were told. We felt very honoured to be blessed with this fabulous weather giving us the very best of views in this peaceful unspoilt corner of the world. As we sailed back down college Fjord it was time to relax on our balcony with a light breakfast soaking up the sunshine and scenery as we gently glided along towards Glacier Bay. Each day of our adventure seems to bring another special experience. It is hard to believe I feel so alive and fresh having been up for 3 hours yet it is only 9.30am in this fascinating destination. It was to be a once in a lifetime trip but, I have already been drawn back 4 times to this fantastic part of the world with a slightly different itinerary but each time an equally exciting adventure. There are so many options you can add on to make a longer holiday before or after your cruise. In 2015 we also have the bonus of the shorter flight time to Anchorage due to the start of a new route hopping over the North Pole. Here at Marion Owen Travel we are Canadian specialists, Alaska and Canada combinations are our speciality. We look forward to booking you on your adventure. Remember, booking with an agent does not cost you any more. Why spend your precious time trolling the internet when we have the answers at our finger tips. We can book all your travel arrangements plus we can come up with unique ideas you would not dream of. Give my team a call. We are experienced in all corners of the world plus our enjoyment is fulfilling your travelling desires & aspirations. We look forward to hearing from you.

BeverleyMag OCTOBER 2014 The Clearance Zone supply chain consists of global providers and store retailers, many who offer popular household names. On the White Goods side of the business, they supply well known high street brands. In many cases, these brand new goods can be sourced for half their retail price for a simple scratch or incomplete packaging and all with a full 6 months warranty to ensure the customers peace of mind, something they believe is hugely important in this industry. Designer beds and dining furniture also compliment their offering as well as hardwood furniture in a range of shades and styles. Many of their furniture lines are modern and contemporary, and so increasingly popular with new full-house furnishings by landlords or property management companies. The team at The Clearance Zone offer a unique management service which involves the supply, installation or fitting of furniture and white goods for single or multiple properties. A complete house for 5 tenants can be furnished for less that £2,500 with the full reassurance of quality goods and an excellent project management service.

WORK TO RE-PAVE A SECTION OF TOLL GAVEL IN BEVERLEY TO START
34
Work to re-pave a section of Toll Gavel in Beverley is due to get underway this weekend. The work, which will see the paving on Toll Gavel at the junction with Saturday Market re-laid, will start on Sunday 7 September and is anticipated to be completed within two weeks. Toll Gavel will be closed to vehicular traffic from the Sunday (7 September) at the junction with Saturday Market. Vehicular access to properties will be via New Walkergate and Cross Street. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the duration of the work. A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “The programme of works has been planned to avoid working in the busy holiday period and to ensure the area is open to traffic in time for a series of exciting events for Beverley. “These include the Georgian Festival and re-enactment on Sunday 21 September, the Food Festival on 5 October, and the Church Lads and Girls parade which is takes place on Sunday 12 October.” The work is to link with the major refurbishment of Saturday Market which has seen the Market Cross area reconstructed, kerbs re-laid, footways reconstructed , and stone sets taken up and re-laid. THE CAST OF A CHRISTMAS CAROL BRING SOME EARLY CHRISTMAS MAGIC TO BEVERLEY
plays the down trodden clerk Bob Cratchit. Belle the young beautiful woman who Scrooge loved deeply is to be played by Hester Arden. Annie Kirkman takes on the role of Mrs Cratchit and Clive Kneller is to be Fezziwig.
Today saw the cast of A Christmas Carol bring some early Christmas magic to Beverley at the official launch of East Riding Theatre’s opening production that will take place in East Yorkshire’s newest theatre from Wednesday 17 December 2014 until Saturday 3 January 2015.
A Christmas Carol is the inaugural production for East Riding Theatre and launches ERT on the road to providing a cultural hub for the people of Beverley and the region. It’s a unique and special venue, and ERT’s aim is to present a varied and highquality artistic programme as well as developing a reputation for producing worldclass theatre. ERT is more than just a venue where performances happen. It’s a venue for everyone to come together.
Treat yourself to a generous helping of traditional Christmas Fayre with our classic tale, newly adapted for the stage by Vincent Regan. This much loved story perfectly captures the magic of Christmas.
36 On a cold, bleak, biting
Christmas Eve seven years after the death of his business partner Jacob Marley, London’s meanest miser Ebenezer Scrooge is his usual grumpy old self. Scrooge hates Christmas, calling it ‘humbug!’ But as the clock strikes midnight his world will be turned upside down. Three ghosts are visiting him to offer visions of a happy past, a harsh present and a horrific future. Can they convince Scrooge to change his wicked ways in time for Christmas? ERT’s brand-new production provides a spooky and epic theatrical treat offering a dynamic and multifaceted fusion of live theatre, film and puppetry to excite audiences with a new and innovative theatre experience – the perfect festive treat for everyone suitable for ages 8 – 108! The ensemble cast includes actors who are very much local to the Beverley area starting with father and son team, Malcolm Tomlinson as Ebenezer Scrooge and Ross Tomlinson playing young Scrooge. The ghost of Jacob Marley will be performed by Richard Avery and Gordon Meredith
Get your tickets to a little piece of history as we open our doors for the very first time. A Christmas Carol runs from Thursday 17 December 2014 to Saturday 3 January 2015. Tickets start from as little as £10 with concessions, and generous group discounts, which can be purchased online at www.eastridingtheatre. co.uk

FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU GIVE YOUR CHILDREN FOR
BREAKFAST? I was shocked recently during a trip to the supermarket to discover exactly how much sugar goes into certain children’s breakfast cereals. Now, there are already quite a few that are on my “Absolutely No!” list, but my daughter asked for a particular brand we’d not tried before – and I’m horrified to say that over 80% of it was pure sugar! Of course, reasoning that out with a 7 year old in the middle of a shop isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but what else could I do but refuse? Why on earth are the manufacturers of these cereals allowed to target children in this way? Isn’t it irresponsible? Every other day we hear 38 stories about child obesity problems, an increase in tooth decay in primary school children, behavioural problems brought on by a poor diet and so on. Is it any wonder? BUYING FOR CHRISTMAS – WHAT ALREADY?!! I always remember a friend of mine from secondary school who was particularly organised when it came to Christmas. We were only in our first year and she had bought and wrapped all her presents by the end of October! I couldn’t believe it then and I still struggle with it now. And I know she’s not the only one. I hear mothers in the playground who are “pretty much sorted” and only have a few of the “bigger things” to get. What – already? I think I’m probably a bit envious that they have everything so planned out. But while I do try to get a few things in November, especially because it helps spread the cost out, there’s something I rather like about shopping just before Christmas, looking for just the right present for someone – and often it’s something you happen upon unexpectedly and realise it’s perfect!
