UK’S LARGEST KITCHEN FACELIFT RETAILER OPENS IN BEVERLEY Kitchens in East Yorkshire will never be the same again Beverley locals, Andy and Terri Wilkinson, are set to open their Dream Doors showroom on Swinemoore Lane on Thursday 12th February. The couple already have an order book full of customers, all impressed by the franchised company’s time and money-saving kitchen makeover service. A local customer who had her kitchen doors and drawers swapped in a single day gave a glowing testimonial on the independent consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade, commenting: “First class work and materials. Prompt attention. Very professional” Another customer in Beverley who chose the same simple door replacement service gave Dream Doors top marks, writing: “Absolutely brilliant. First class, very, very friendly and efficient service.” Dream Doors was established in Hampshire in 1999 and now has more than 50 locally-owned franchised showrooms throughout the country. The Wilkinson’s showroom – which opens next week with celebrated town crier, Michael Wood, on hand to ring in the news – covers the entire HU postcode area. Famous local company, the White Rabbit Chocolatiers, will be handing out their wares on the day as well.

4

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015 Experienced business owners in their own right before joining Dream Doors, Andy says that, as a franchise, the company offers something other kitchen operators can’t. “I’ve visited plenty of businesses in my time, and Dream Doors definitely stands out as something special,” he says. “It offers the best of both worlds for customers; they’re buying from a national brand that’s won numerous awards and built a fantastic reputation, but they’re also dealing with local business owners who have their own reputation and livelihood at stake.” Made-to-measure and manufactured in the UK, all Dream Doors kitchen doors and drawers are fitted in a single day. It’s a convenient solution that leaves kitchens looking like new, but without the stress and upheaval of a full refurbishment. Most customers also choose new worktops and a sink, and while that might take an extra day, it is still at least half the cost of a comparable new kitchen. Dream Doors also supplies appliances from the best manufacturers and some of the most innovative storage solutions on the market, all making the best use of space in the kitchen. The Wilkinsons offer a free guarantee on the doors and installation and ask for just a 50 percent deposit, only collecting the balance when customers are completely satisfied. Contact Andy or Terri on 01482 861653, visit www.dreamdoors.co.uk or call into the showroom on your next visit to the area.

10 year fixed mortgages get even cheaper The battle to offer the cheapest 10-year mortgage has intensified with Nationwide’s 2.84pc deal – the lowest ever seen Nationwide has ramped up competition in the 10-year fixed-rate mortgage market, with the launch of a 2.84pc deal. This is the now the cheapest 10-year fix available, following the launch of Barclays’ 2.99pc deal earlier this month, which at the time was the cheapest mortgage ever seen for those who want to fix for a decade. Nationwide will offer existing mortgage customers the 2.84pc rate, while new customers are offered 2.94pc. The mortgage comes with a £999 product fee, or £499 for first-time buyers, and borrowers will need to have a deposit of at least 40pc. Remortgage customers will also receive a free standard valuation, and the choice of free standard legal work or £250 cashback. The number of 10-year fixes on the market has surged over the past year, with 77 products now on the market compared with only eight a year ago, according to financial information website Moneyfacts. Richard Napier, director of mortgages and savings at Nationwide,

said there had been a “growing trend” of customers opting for longer term fixed rates to “ensure certainty of monthly mortgage payments, particularly ahead of any rise in interest rates.” Around nine in 10 new mortgages being taken out are products with a rate which is fixed in for a certain period of time, protecting borrowers from any immediate impact of the base rate increasing. Bank Rate will remain on hold until the second half of 2015, according to recent signals from the Bank of England, but a series of developments in the global economy means Bank Rate could stay at 0.5pc for a while longer. David Hollingworth, spokesman for London and Country mortgage

House & Home brokers, said that fixed mortgage rates had fallen across the board and the margin between the best five- and 10-year fix has now narrowed to just 0.55pc. While two and five year fixed-rate mortgages remain popular, borrowers are looking to fix for longer as expectations of a Bank Rate rise are pushed back further. But Mr Hollingworth says that many house buyers are still reluctant to fix until 2025 because of the possibility of having to pay early repayment charges, or moving house and not being able to “port” their mortgage. The national media has written extensively about home owners being told they cannot port their mortgage to a new property. Mr Hollingworth said: “The 10-year fixed mortgage market isn’t currently overcrowded, but interest is growing for longer term fixes. While I don’t think rates will go much lower than 2.84pc, we could see more lenders start to cut their rates in-line with Barclays and Nationwide.”

8

Ray Boulger, of brokerage John Charcol, said: “The further ahead one tries to look the more difficult it is to be confident of where interest rates will be, and so having one’s mortgage fixed at sub 3pc

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015 for as long as 10 years provides comfort for a long time, not only for those worried about rate rises but also just in terms of making it so much easier for household budgeting.” One way of assessing a 10-year-fix is how much higher the rate is than on a comparable five-year fix, Mr Boulger said. Chelsea Building Society has launched a market leading five-year fix at 2.29pc, with a £1,675 fee, for those with a 35pc deposit, and so buyers of the 10-year-fix are paying an extra 0.55pc for five years in exchange for the certainty of a 2.84pc rate in the second five years. In December, TSB launched a 10-year fix that allows borrowers to switch to a different deal after five years without any penalties. The 10-year “Fix and Flex” mortgage has a rate of 3.44pc for borrowers with a 40pc deposit. There is no fee and the early repayment charges reduce on a sliding scale from 5pc until April 2016 to 1pc until April 2020. After that there are no charges to refinance or end the mortgage early.

Learn To Cope With Wedding Day Stress To every bride, the wedding day is probably the most special event of her life. Unfortunately, with great events comes great responsibility and, inevitably, tons of stress. First of all, brides feel the pressure of having to look their best. Being the center of attention is not as easy as it seems. This is the day when a woman reaches the climax of her feminism and is allowed to pamper herself up as much as she can.

what happens if it rains on your wedding day. If it’s sunny: you win (I’m not going to state the obvious reasons why). And if it’s rainy, you win again: because rain is a great element to add to your wedding photos and an opportunity to add even more color to the happiest day of your life with some really pastel umbrellas. So, who loses here? You got it: no one!

High expectations don’t always lead to happiness. As weird as it may seem, the less expectations you have from this day, the more you will 10 actually be able to enjoy yourself. This means that you should be careful not to stain your wedding dress, but if that happens, don’t stress over it too much. If you feel that emotions are taking over, don’t worry: it’s perfectly normal. Another important thing to remember is that the wedding day is not really the responsibility of a single person. It’s a complex sum of several responsibilities of several people, like yourself, your wedding party, your officiant, the vendors you work with, the photographer, etc. If you are not willing to accept imperfection, chance, risk or mistakes, you will have at least 1 hour of suffering on your wedding day. Always try to create a win-win situation, even on your wedding day. You need to establish 2 positives: one if something goes well and the other, if something goes bad. In order to do this, you need to be a flexible person. For example:

Remember to never use words inside your head that could only make a bad thing, worse. When you feel something is not going your way on your wedding day, step aside, take a deep breath, see how that makes you feel, what’s your instinctual reaction, what’s your secondary reaction and see if the problem could be solved by someone else.

Why do brides cry? As a woman, you most likely know what it feels like when someone or something messes with one of your well-established plans. When it comes to a wedding, there are so many variables that may change: napkins may have a different colour than your whole wedding décor or rain might “ruin” your wedding photo shoot. Such unpleasant surprises often lead to frustrations that are just ready to explode.

Spring Weddings Psychologists say that birthdays or wedding are important in the life of every man or woman, so everyone in the situation is trying to obtain the maximum amount of love and attention that they can possibly get. If we are concerned about not getting love and appreciation on our wedding day, our mind will learn to trigger mechanisms that will sooth us and confirm some lessons we’ve learned in the past.

which leads to complexes of inferiority. These mechanisms are not really that intelligent. They kind of remind you of a childhood behaviour, when you would cry if things didn’t really go your way and adults would do their best to cheer you up. This is not exactly the adult way to handle a crisis when you’re all grown up.

When a person is feeling really under the weather and shows signs of anger and even cries, the others will inevitably be more sympathetic, and thus lower their expectations. Even more, some of your guests or people from your wedding party may start feeling guilty for what happened,

This is both good news and bad news. If people do remember your wedding 10 years from now, you’ve probably accomplished something that not many couples can. If something goes bad, maybe oblivion is not the worst case scenario.

It’s Got a Ring To It

12

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015

1. Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart. 2. About 70% of all brides sport the traditional diamond on the fourth finger of their left hand. 3. Priscilla Presley’s engagement ring was a whopping 3.5 carat rock surrounded by a detachable row of smaller diamonds. 4. Diamonds set in gold or silver became popular as betrothal rings among wealthy Venetians toward the end of the fifteenth century.

Weddings are eventually forgotten.

5. In the symbolic language of jewels, a sapphire in a wedding ring means marital happiness. 6. A pearl engagement ring is said to be bad luck because its shape echoes that of a tear. 7. One of history’s earliest engagement rings was given to Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VIII. She was two years old at the time. 8. Seventeen tons of gold are made into wedding rings each year in the United States! 9. Snake rings dotted with ruby eyes were popular wedding bands in Victorian England the coils winding into a circle symbolised eternity. 10. Aquamarine represents marital harmony and is said to ensure a long, happy marriage.

Good Luck and Bad Luck!!! 1. Hey, brides, tuck a sugar cube into your glove — according to Greek culture, the sugar will sweeten your union. 2. A spider found in a wedding dress means good luck. Yikes! 3. In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the “best day” to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. 4. The groom carries the bride across the threshold to bravely protect her from evil spirits lurking below. 5. Ancient Romans studied pig entrails to determine the luckiest time to marry. 6. Saturday is the unluckiest wedding day, according to English folklore. Funny — it’s the most popular day of the week to marry!

7. Rain on your wedding day is actually considered good luck, according to Hindu tradition! 8. For good luck, Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day. Ouch! 9. Middle Eastern brides paint henna on their hands and feet to protect themselves from the evil eye. 10. Peas are thrown at Czech newlyweds instead of rice.

Spring Weddings

Ten tips for choosing a Wedding Photographer Choosing the right photographer to capture your big day the way you want is an important job. Your photographer will be the one who records all the details you have planned, the guests you have invited and beautiful emotions of the day. To help you make the right choice here are 10 top tips for you to consider.

Experience

Check their experience as a wedding photographer, as well as being talented with a camera they need to know how a wedding day unfolds. Are they full time or is it a second job. Ask about photography equipment, check that they have the kit for all eventualities such as low lighting conditions or extra lighting to move indoors if needed. They need back up kit too, even the best cameras can break, they must have a spare to hand.

Insurance

All professional photographers should be fully insured. Having insurance is a good indication that they take their work and your booking seriously.

Cost

Don’t book a photographer on budget alone, find the right one. If the deal is cheap, find out why. A good experienced wedding photographer will expect a fair payment for their work.

Remember the saying, you get what you pay for! Quality

Friends

This is a big fat no! Just because your friend has got a good camera does not mean they know how to use it. It would be like giving a BMW to someone who can’t drive. Even if they are a keen amateur, unless they have wedding experience, say no.

Portfolios

Equipment

14

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015

Check the quality of their finished work. Prints and albums should all be true photographic prints, you don’t want any ink jet prints in your wedding album, you deserve the best. The album will be part of your family history one day.

Ask to see portfolios of full weddings, most photographs can get a few lucky shots but you need an album full.

Demeanour

You need a photographer who can keep calm and confident, can direct your guests whilst remaining polite and who can deal with a change of plan in their stride. They should take any stress away from you.

Seconder Shooter

Many photographers have a second with them, they will help with organisation and capture many of the detail and candid shots you will be unaware of.

Gut Feeling

Go with your gut feeling. Your photographer will be with you on your big day you need someone with you who you have a good feeling about.

Business News

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015

Independent Business Beverley A thriving local economy makes a town a better place to live, work and visit; and that’s why the people at Independent Business Beverley have started a group to encourage the Beverley public to spend more of their income in locally run establishments. Independent Business Beverley meetings are open to businesses and the public alike, there is no entry fee or membership fee and there is no commercial angle other than the desire to promote our local economy. It presents a unique opportunity for businesses and customers to develop a personal relationship, as well as a networking opportunity for businesses. But it is more than that, it is about creating a culture in Beverley where members of the public understand the benefits of shopping at a business owned and run by a local person and therefore chose to do so wherever possible. There are approximately 30,000 people in Beverley and if every one of them spent just £10 a week in a locally owned business that would mean an extra £15.6 Million for the local economy. If those millions were spent in a chain store then the money would be funnelled out of Beverley to wherever that company is based. However a business owned by a local 16 person would feed that money back into the local economy, creating jobs for local people and supporting other local businesses; creating a self-sustaining cycle of prosperity. If the people and businesses of Beverley organise and cooperate then this simple idea is more than possible, it is inevitable. The first meeting was held in December, the turnout was modest but the group itself was very productive; all of the businesses present had questions to ask and points to raise. If you like the idea of promoting independent locally owned business and nourishing your local economy then please attend the next one! It will be held at St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 17th February2015. Jonathan Razzell, IBB founder.

Aloe Vera: It’s Not Just Sun-Cream and Toilet Paper! By Debbie Pickering

OK. I admit it. Until recently I really knew nothing about Aloe Vera! I used it on holiday in Ibiza once (the actual plant) as I had the most awful sunburn on the backs of my knees and it was really painful. A lady, who lived there (In Ibiza) saw me gingerly touching the backs of my legs, bent down and broke off an Aloe Vera leaf. She peeled it like a banana and then told me to wipe the backs of my legs with the ‘inner leaf gel’. I did and felt instant relief; I couldn’t believe it! More recently, I have discovered it can do so much more than that. For example, Aloe Vera has 75 nutrients, vitamins and minerals that our bodies need! Huh, who knew? Well, as it turns out - quite a lot of people:

18

Dr Peter Atherton, who has been referred to as “...the world’s authority on the properties of Aloe Vera...” both writes and lectures on Aloe Vera internationally. In his book Aloe Vera: The Medicinal Plant there is a whole chapter about historical mentions of Aloe Vera, both in folk-lore and historical texts from all over the world. He writes: The true aloe has been endowed with such marvellous properties that, over thousands of years and in many different part of the world, it has been given almost as many evocative names. I know of no herb with as many similar nicknames from so many different cultures around the world. This must say something. Here is just a selection: Heaven’s Blessing Plant of Life, Burn Plant, Dietary Plant, Healing Plant, Medicine Plant, Potted

Physician, Wonder Plant, Wand of Heaven, First Aid Plant, Silent Healer, Single Bible The Japanese have a name which caps them all ‘ISHA IRAZU’ which translated means, “No need for a doctor.” I am certainly not advocating that anybody should use Aloe Vera instead of going to their Doctor, as the Japanese nickname would suggest. However, as Aloe Vera is a 100% natural substance, people are increasingly turning back to it, and other natural herbal remedies, as they offer help without the unacceptable side effects of many pharmaceutical drugs. In future articles, I will show how Aloe Vera can help with skin complaints such as Psoriasis, Dermatitis and Eczema. It can help with bowel and gut problems such as IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. It can help the digestive system, the immune system and the musculoskeletal systems as well as being a useful source of vitamins and minerals.

Beverley woman from couch potato to London Marathon

Local News money for the work of the Red Cross is infectious – she’s even inspired me to get out running again! We’re massively grateful to Linda and everyone who is running for the Red Cross, to allow us to run to help people whose lives have been devastated by disasters and crises.”

Inspired by Linda? Want to dust off the running shoes and take part in events like the London Marathon and Great North Run, rather than watching them over breakfast on TV? The Red Cross needs more runners and has places on everything from 10ks to marathons. Visit www.redcross.org.uk/Runs to find one for you.

Beverley woman, Linda Wright, has changed her life and swapped lazing on the sofa for seemingly endless hours running in the cold and wet in preparation for the ultimate running challenge. And she hopes to raise £3000 for the British Red Cross into the bargain. Linda can be sponsored at www.virginmoneygiving.com/LindaMarathon By day Linda (40) is helping teachers find jobs in her role at The Education Network in Hull. By night, weekend and early mornings, she is now dedicated marathon runner. Linda now has two missions that she is passionate about: to complete the London Marathon on 26 April; and to raise as much money for and awareness of the Red Cross. Linda explained: “Twelve months ago I was a couch potato! I decided in 2014 that I would change my life and get active. So I took up running. And I got so keen that I started to enter Events. This culminated in me completing the Great North Run in September in a very respectable 2 hours (for a 40 year old female runner nine months into her running!). I did this for a charity that is very close to my heart. The Red Cross. It’s not a trendy charity (nothing wrong with that) and it doesn’t target one illness or disease (nothing wrong with that either). But it does look after a lot of people in varying difficult situations both at home and overseas. From UK Flood Victims to those suffering from Famine in Africa. From Refugee’s in war torn Syria to the elderly at home in Britain. It’s a wide ranging charity and that’s why I ran to raise money for them. In January of this year the Red Cross got in touch with me to tell me a runner had dropped out of the 2015 London Marathon and would I like their place. I really wasn’t sure - the furthest I have ever run is half that distance, and there was only 120 days to prepare for it.However, the London Marathon is the pinnacle of every amateur runners bucket list in the UK. So I said YES!” Senior Community Fundraiser for the British Red Cross, Max Newton, said: “Linda’s journey from sofa to sponsored marathon runner is brilliant. Her enthusiasm about running and raising To contact BEVERLEYMAG please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470

UK, Europe & Worldwide this month I bring you examples

30

that may just bring you food for thought and inspire you. In the UK I have chosen to focus on Scotland’s Ayrshire and the Isle of Arran. Not too far north this area is easily reachable by road within a day allowing for a scenic drive along with time for sightseeing. Cunnock home to Dumfries House is on route and would certainly be of interest to anyone having experienced Highgrove Gardens, this estate is a programme that HRH Prince Charles is heavily involved with developing. Before taking the short ferry crossing over to Arran it would be a shame not to take in Culzean Castle & Gardens. Arran itself is known as a miniature Scotland, offering no less than 7 golf courses, a castle with gardens, a whisky distillery. The island produces very nice toiletries of all things! and of course has stunning scenery and beaches. On route home there is time to take in the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. This year sees many events commemorating historic anniversaries. In the UK the Magna Carta celebrates 800 years. Across Europe WW1 still continues its centenary until 2017 and this year the Battle of Waterloo has many special exhibitions for its 200th anniversary. There are many organised tours available travelling by coach via North Sea Ferries or Dover/Calais and Channel Tunnel as well as by air. You will be hard pushed to find one tour covering everything to do with WW1, you would be away for weeks rather than days. Another thing to consider is that the experience can be overwhelming and my opinion is that it becomes tough after 5 days and bite sized visits do allow you to absorb and understand more information. Now, one for the ladies the Women’s Institute is celebrating its founding 100 years ago in the small town of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada. We have a party taking a pilgrimage in September to take in not only a visit to Stoney Creek but a wonderful 11 day tour of Eastern Canada to see the fabulous scenery and colours of the fall along with amazing sight seeing in Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec plus a Whale watching cruise. You may of course be celebrating your own special milestone in life and wish to have a special break to commemorate your achievement. We are regularly asked to organise family breaks across two or three generations to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. For example a city break, the sights of London with a show, Bruges via North Sea Ferries, Paris by Eurostar or with little ones a visit to Disney in Paris or Florida. A cruise is good for a family allowing everyone to do as they please during the day and gathering each evening to dine and catch up with the days events. Or hiring a Villa, Castle or Mansion in the UK, and various places around the world with the most popular being France, Italy, USA and the Caribbean. For couples there are many ideas in which to indulge from adventurous touring, to relaxing water villas by the sea or perhaps my favourite Regent 7 Seas all inclusive cruising! What ever destination & style of holiday you are looking we look forward to hearing from you ... Marion

NEW GROVEHILL TRAFFIC SIGNALS SWITCHED ON

Following extensive alterations to the existing Grovehill roundabout, the council is pleased to announce the new junction is nearing completion. Traffic signals are now being installed and are expected to be up and running by the end of this week, dependent on good weather over the next few days. Nigel Leighton, director of environment and neighbourhood services, said : “As always with new traffic signal installations, there will be a need to adjust the signals over the following weeks, in order to achieve the best configuration.

“The new junction will play a vital role for traffic using the new Beverley Southern Relief Road which will take through traffic around the south of

36

Beverley between the A164 Victoria Road and the new Grovehill junction, avoiding the town centre. “As there will be more traffic using this junction, the roundabout has been replaced with a junction controlled by traffic signals to control the traffic flow better at this location. The junction arrangement also includes new facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.” Following on from this, the new traffic signals at the altered Figham junction are also expected to come into operation week commencing Monday 9 February 2015. These two new junctions form a vital part of the Beverley Integrated Transport Plan, along with traffic signs for the new route and the opening of the Beverley Southern Relief Road, expected in March 2015.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

It’s fantastic to see that theatre is now back in Beverley and townsfolk, and indeed the East Riding, can once again look on Beverley as a centrepiece for highquality theatrical entertainment with the recent opening of the East Riding Theatre.

From 1840, when the theatre in Lairgate closed its doors for good, generations of Beverlonians were to miss out on a permanent entertainment venue.

40

But what of this theatre of yesteryear? What sort of cultural delights were laid on for the people of Beverley 200 years ago? Staff at the East Riding Archives have unearthed the answer with a collection of playbills dating from 1789-1821. Amongst some familiar favourites such as ‘Hamlet’, ‘Robinson Crusoe’, and ‘Barber of Seville’, there are dozens of plays that you might never have heard of: ‘First Love’, ‘Cure For The Heart Ache’, and ‘Dramatist’ were popular plays around this time. They also put on a farce called ‘The Apprentice’ (no mention of a ‘Lord Sugar’ or anyone being ‘fired’ though), and had their own version of ‘Braveheart’ – ‘Wallace: The Hero Of Scotland’, though it’s doubtful the visual effects were quite so gruesome as Mel Gibson’s motion picture. An interesting feature of the playbills is the way in

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015 which they describe the backdrops and special effects to be used in the play. Clearly, this was seen as a selling point for potential audiences, who were reeled in to see plays such as ‘Libertine’, which promises a “Grand Banquet Chamber, changes to a place of Horror Daemons sink on a Burning Rock Amidst a Shower Of Fire…” In the days before screen entertainment this must have been a tantalising prospect for audiences. Sam Bartle, collections officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “With the abundance of TV and cinema, and all the high quality special effects that we see nowadays, many of us tend to forget what a great visual spectacle theatre can be. For those audiences 200 years ago, the theatre was their ‘television’, their ‘movies’, and they must have really appreciated the entertainment value of a live performance.” One of the more unusual spectacles that was put on in Beverley featured two brothers, W R Grossmith and Master B Grossmith, made notable by the fact that Master Grossmith was just six years old, and his brother was also a boy at the time. The Grossmith brothers appeared in a medley of short performances which saw them take on 23 different characters in scenes from various plays including ‘Henry The Fourth’, ‘Richard The Third’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The playbill boasts “The rapid changes and extraordinary effect which the Scenery and Dresses produce, appearing to alter the size of the Masters G[rossmith] renders it necessary to state that the whole of the characters are personated by the two brothers alone, who will be seen previous to their performance, that their real size may be known.” The playbills are available to view on request in the Archives at the Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley. GARDENING

February Gardening

General tasks and garden maintenance Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Although temperatures should start to rise this month, there is still a risk of frost and even snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden fleece around them and check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. Tender trees and shrubs will thank you for a generous application of dry mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions.

42

Once the ground isn’t frozen, make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down. Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow and...

BeverleyMag FEBRUARY 2015 Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels! Lawns Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure as to how to begin! Birds It’s another lean month for wildlife and especially birds. Putting out fresh water and food is really important, especially on cold days. You’ve heard it all before, but please do buy good quality bird food or fat/suet balls and check that water is not frozen.

Remember not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth. When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Valentine’s Day I’m sure you will all have some wonderfully romantic plans for Valentine’s Day! I, however, will not! My husband says he doesn’t understand why he should tell me he loves me on that particular day of the year just because he’s been told to tell me by the masses! He thinks it’s all a load of commercialised nonsense. I tend to agree with him on a purely practical level, but I am also a complete romantic so secretly I hope he’ll change his mind! Saying that, he usually gets me a card just in 46 case I’m feeling particularly sensitive because he doesn’t want to upset me! Guys - it pays to cover all bases!!

Buying a TV..... it’s simple!!! When did buying a new television get so complicated?!! The last one we bought was over 10 years ago and how things have changed! There are smart TVs, 3D TVs, curved tvs, 4K TVs. Some are better for picture quality and some are better for the internet. We have spent weeks checking out reviews online and talking to various salesmen in electrical stores until my brain turned to mush! I can’t say I was all that bothered with a curved one. They look great, but I don’t need it to curve. Then we realised that it will be at least 5 years before 4K becomes really relevant – and there’s already talk of 8K. In the end, we plumped for better picture quality because the internet still works perfectly fine on it. Brilliant – decision made! Or so we thought. Because then they started talking to us about soundbars!.........
