A New Approach for the River Hull The River Hull is set for a transformation thanks to the work of the River Hull Advisory Board which has been set up and led by Graham Stuart MP to develop a new flood risk management strategy for the river catchment area. Over the past 18 months, the Board has assessed new ways of managing the river to ensure it gives the best possible flood protection to homes and businesses at the same time as increasing the leisure usage of the river. Hundreds of thousands of pounds will be invested to improve the river by removing the sunken barges, building a Mitre Gate, increased dredging and creating a navigation authority.
4
Commenting on the new approach, Graham said, “It was clear the existing strategy for managing the river wasn’t
working effectively so we’ve cast this aside to develop an entirely new approach. It’s vital we consider the whole river catchment area when planning for investment and that includes flood protection and economic regeneration working in harmony.” Further details about the strategy can be found on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website. http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/council/plans-and-policies/ other-plans-and-policies-information/flood-risk/flood-riskstrategy/

Separation and Divorce – the Satnav to Settlement
Family justice nowadays gives a choice of routes to the final destination when you and your ex need to sort out a financial settlement. These are some of the routes you can follow: Solicitor Negotiation Where your experienced family lawyer provides legal advice and negotiates a financial settlement which suits you. This can be done through correspondence, and/or face to face discussions. Mediation An independent 3rd party (a professionally qualified family mediator) helps the couple resolve their issues and find a way forward which is acceptable to them both. Court Proceedings When it hasn’t been possible to reach an agreement, either party can ask the court to fix a time table which will
BeverleyMag MARCH 2015 result in a final court order, imposed by a judge, usually after a contested court hearing. If the parties can reach an agreement, the court process comes to a halt, and results in an order approved by the court without a final hearing. Family Arbitration For couples who haven’t been able to reach an agreement using negotiation, or mediation, family law arbitration is an alternative to court. You can choose the arbitrator and the times and dates of meetings, as well as the issues which the professionally qualified family arbitrator will be asked to decide upon. Collaborative Family Law Where each person appoints their own collaboratively trained family lawyer. The parties meet together with their lawyers to work things out face to face. You all sign an agreement which commits you to trying to resolve the issues without going to court. Christine Pick http://www.coles-law.co.uk/family

Six Secrets for Looking Young
Health, Beauty & Wellbeing
Would you like to look a few years younger? Do you feel lifeless or drained of emotion? Does your skin look tired, dark, or sickly? Well don’t worry, there are a lot of simple and practical things you can do to rejuvenate your look. The biggest thing you need to know is the secret to a young look is achieved by revitalizing and purifying the blood. Tissue and organ health and depends on healthy blood because blood circulates through the entire body, irrigating nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. So we are going to give you a few simple tips that you can use in your life to achieve a young look. You will soon see how to surprise everyone if you follow everything, step by step. 1. Include enough iron in your diet: Iron is essential for forming red blood cells and for oxygenating them. A lack of iron causes cells to become anemic and thereby deteriorates skin and hair. You will also feel tired, exhausted, and lifeless. Women need more iron than men due to their organic needs, like menstruation or pregnancy. Here we are going to provide you with a list of foods rich in iron: brewer’s yeast, whole-grain flour, green dandelion leaves (steamed), beans, raisins, radishes, prunes, almonds, lentils, grain molasses, and dates. 2. Drink enough fresh water: Water keeps all tissues hydrated and helps remove waste and unnecessary toxic material from the intestines. It is important that you avoid all sodas or bottled or processed juices that contain preservatives or chemicals because they only deteriorate the body and acidify blood. This causes the body to deteriorate and age prematurely.
of all, keep your tissues well oxygenated and clean. The secret to exercising resides in practicing some sort of activity that you truly like. This will increase the wonder and benefits or your practice. Avoid exercising out of competition. It’s better to find an activity that you feel comfortable with that involves the largest amount of muscles possible. Dance, yoga, Taichi, swimming, etc., are a few examples of very enjoyable activities. If you exercise without enjoying it, it will not provide the same results as is you were to choose an activity that you truly like. 5. Avoid too many creams or oils on your skin: If you put on too many creams on your skin, your skin will get used to always receiving nutrients from outside and will become lazy in making its own oils and natural nutrients. Use creams and clean your face every night but don’t use too much. It’s best to apply natural fruit or vegetable masks every once in a while. 6. Keep your spirit and emotions happy and calm: High stress levels cause the pore to close and nutrients are thereby prevented from being absorbed and eliminated effectively. This is even when you are well rested, when you sleep enough hours and avoid staying up late. Practicing meditation is good for this, as well as reading books that help you understand what you feel and to live creatively and happily. The youth that you reflect has a lot to do with your drive for life and how much you enjoy what you do.
3. Eat antioxidant foods Your diet should be based primarily in the most natural antioxidant foods possible, because they fight free radicals and slow and detain aging and body deterioration. The foods that contain the greatest number of antioxidants are: citrus fruit, berries, avocado, garlic, onion, almonds, carrots, alfalfa, aloe, etc. Include vegetable juices in your day, one made with carrots and combined with different vegetables. This cannot be absent in your diet. 4. Exercise and follow a daily exercise routine: This will promote good circulation in your body and will most To contact

Clearing up Psoriasis, Dermatitis and Eczema without prescription drugs!
By Debbie Pickering
If you have ever suffered from Psoriasis, Dermatitis or Eczema you will know it is no laughing matter. It can be painful, itchy, irritating, sore and embarrassing! Prescription drugs such as hydrocortisone and other cortisone based treatments can have side effects that are as bad as the condition. So what if there was a natural remedy that could heal, soothe and is natural so doesn’t have the side effects? There is - it is called Aloe Vera. Obviously the more concentrated the better so a good quality Aloe Vera is most effective. Aloe Vera has lignins, which are carried deep into the dermis layer of the skin and has also been found to reduce scarring during the healing process. Aloe Vera is anti-bacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and deeply moisturising. John and Juliet Ross used Aloe Vera for their 9 year old 10 daughter and her eczema patches cleared up in 3 - 4 weeks. They say, “However it did get worse before it got better and it was important that we persevered...We understand it was a ‘healing crisis’ when the damaged cells are pushed up to the surface by the deeper layer of healing skin. We continue to use the creme to keep the condition at bay” Finbar Lehane suffered from chronic psoriasis for many years and “...came to the conclusion that the side effects of Cortisone far outweighed the benefits” Finbar was given Aloe Vera Gel to drink, (Which helps to heel the skin from the inside) an Aloe Vera creme, also containing Propolis (used by bees to keep the hive anti-septic) and an Aloe shower / bath gel. He says, “I began the treatment on the Thursday evening and, to my sheer and utter disbelief, by Friday morning the itch had completely disappeared.” Like the Ross’s Finbar saw the problem got worse during his second week of treatment but he understood that the healing had begun. He says, “I am now at the stage where I have been taking the gel for 6 weeks and my body is clearing up at a steady pace. I have no doubt that I have found the answer to my problem.” Like Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis is actually a disorder of the immune system. These are very common and can be
BeverleyMag MARCH 2015 aggravated by stress, alcohol and digestive problems. There is a long chain sugar (polysaccharide) in Aloe Vera that can help to balance the immune system, which is why drinking Aloe Vera Gel can help to heal these conditions from the inside out. Using an Aloe soap helps and of course a rich moisturising creme with Aloe and Propolis will all help to heal from the outside, as well as bringing immediate relief from itching and soreness. In future articles, I will show how Aloe Vera can help with bowel and gut problems such as IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. It can help the digestive system, the immune system and the musculoskeletal systems as well as being a useful source of vitamins and minerals. The two case studies here can be found in Aloe Vera: The Medicine Plant by Dr Peter Atherton 2006 Published by KPM Co.

Too Busy to Bathe!
12
The majority of women in the UK don’t bathe or take a shower each day because they are too tired, new research has revealed. The survey also showed that as many as one in three women admitted that they had gone as long as three days without washing or wiping their face or body at all. Some 57 per cent of women acknowledged the importance of hygiene, but said that they didn’t have the time to shower or bathe before bed, and instead opted to freshen up with wipes. The survey of over 2,000 females by skin care range Flint + Flint also showed that over 60 per cent of women did not remove their makeup before bed after a night out, with 35 per cent of those saying they were worried about getting enough sleep. Asked whether they washed in the morning, only a fifth of women said they took a shower or bath every day, with over 30 percent revealing they did not wash for three days at time. However, 92 per cent of participants said they understood the importance of a skin care regime and recognised that life-style factors such as lack of sleep and dehydration can impact the appearance of their skin. Almost 90 per cent of women surveyed said they didn’t improve their hygiene because they were too tired in the morning or evening. The NHS advises that to maintain a basic level of hygiene, a person must wash their face and brush their teeth daily; clean their hands
after using the toilet; wash their genital and anal area each day; and fully bath or shower at least twice a week. Flint + Flint owner Maxine Flint said the company was “alarmed” by the survey. “We were alarmed to hear about the amount of women not looking after their skin by following basic skin care regimes. It is so important to clean your face daily and moisturise to slow down the ageing process.” “It’s true that today’s pace of life is fast but surely as a nation we haven’t become too busy to wash!”

NEW AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN LECONFIELD HANDED OVER TO EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL
BeverleyMag MARCH 2015
FRAME YOUR OWN PIECE OF HEAVEN
As East Riding of Yorkshire Council continues its programme of building affordable housing across the area for residents, the latest phase at Leconfield is nearing completion. The council- owned development in Leconfield consists of the construction of two x three- bedroom and two x two- bedroom new semi-detached houses which have been designed by the council’s architects to complement the neighbouring infrastructure in the village. Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said:”Since 2010, this council has built well over 350 new homes for our residents in a wide range of developments across the East Riding.
14
“The need for affordable housing remains high throughout our area. The council has secured additional grant funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to support this construction of yet another phase of affordable housing within the region, and I am delighted to see these latest excellent properties at Leconfield.”
WITH A SIMON LAZENBY WINDOW
The building fabric materials, including triple glazing and extensive insulation, have been specified to ensure the houses are energy efficient. In addition, compost bins and water butts have been provided to help encourage residents’ environmentally friendly lifestyles. One of the council’s local YorBuild contractors, Voase Builders Limited, have carried out the construction of the properties and are working closely with the council’s project management team to progress the development. Work started on site in summer, 2014 and is due to complete in early March 2015. The properties will be occupied by council tenants very shortly.

HEADTEACHER AND STAFF CHOSEN FOR KEY SCHOOL SUPPORT ROLE The headteacher and staff at Mount Pleasant CE Junior School in Market Weighton have been selected for a top role supporting schools in challenging circumstances. Mrs Adrienne Palmer is one of 137 headteachers to be appointed to the role of National Leader of Education (NLE) in the latest recruitment round. NLEs along with staff in their school - designated a National Support School - use their success and professionalism to provide additional leadership capability in other schools. NLEs are deployed to suit the needs of each school needing support, or to those in transition to federation or academy status. The type of support provided is flexible and can often involve NLEs becoming executive headteachers. They also have responsibility for bringing on the next generation of NLEs and National Support Schools. Mrs Palmer said, “It is a great privilege to share the good practice we have at Mount Pleasant with other schools. This process is not meant to be one sided. We will benefit from working with others too.” Many NLEs/NSSs report improved exam results at the schools 16 they support, as well as their own. Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for chidlrern, young people and education, said: “ Since Mrs Palmer took over at Mount Pleasant she has built a team that has turned the school from a satisfactory to an outstanding school. If her skills can be replicated in schools across the country it is good news for education and young people.” Mike Furbank, the council’s head of children and young people, education and schools, said; “I am delighted that the excellent practice at Mount Pleasant has been recognised. We are keen to use the skills and talents present in the school to support other schools in the East Riding.” Charlie Taylor, Chief Executive of the National College for Teaching and Leadership, said: “It’s great that heads like Mrs Palmer are willing to look beyond their own school gates to help more and more pupils achieve. We have over 1,000 National Leaders of Education and their efforts are at the heart of a self-improving, school-led education system. “School-to-school support is having a growing impact with benefits for both the schools being supported and those providing the support.” Successful heads will be invited to attend a formal induction and training for the role in driving school improvement. Dear Mandi, Two weeks ago I found out my husband had been having an affair. I’m devastated, I can’t stop crying, I’m not eating or sleeping, I just don’t know what to do. He has torn this family apart, my eldest daughter won’t speak to him and she’s angry at me too. The little ones keep asking when is daddy coming home. My friends are supportive, but I know they are only being kind. He says he’s sorry but not sure if he wants to come home yet, if at all. I miss him so much, do you think I should take him back. Cheryl from Beverley Dear Cheryl What a terrible shock for you, no wonder you feel in such a emotional state with yourself. Two weeks is not a lot of time to get used to the news, so don’t be too hard on yourself thinking you have to start getting yourself continued on page 20

Ask Mandi together and making rash decisions, like taking him back just to ease the pain that his affair has caused. This is not your fault. The only responsibility you have right now is to yourself and your children. Somehow over the next few days I would like you try and put yourself into a more steadier place emotionally, where you can breathe more easily and make better choices. Each day as you wake up, right down three positive things about your life, e.g your friends, your children, repeat them daily. Then write down three things that you will do that day to keep you moving forward, e.g a coffee with a friend. His betrayal has hit you hard and you are full of shock, denial and hurt. Anger may soon follow. Write down your feelings in a book, just to outpour them as they happen, this helps release them safely rather than keeping them inside where they will just cause greater upset. As regards to your daughter, she is no doubt hurting too as her world, like yours, has been turned upside down. Her anger at you is just her internal
BeverleyMag MARCH 2015
turmoil coming out. Talk to her, re-assure her that soon things will be a lot better, because they will. Take time out with all the children and do something fun together, this will all give you a sense of togetherness and show you that life is still good. Try not to make any decisions about your husband just yet. He has hurt you badly and you need time to recover. Take each day at a time, lean on your friends & family and soon you will be strong enough to see that it’s not him that makes the decision to come home or not, but you! Best of Luck, Mandi x

If anyone asks about my favourite places in the world Canada always pops up, Western Canada is probably the only place I would consider living. The country has everything to offer for example: vibrant cities, scenery, adventure, sport and wildlife. Beautiful summers and cold winters for fabulous skiing opportunities More and more travellers are enjoying bite sized escapes, city breaks to New York and Boston are always popular, as an alternative Eastern Canada’s Toronto or Montreal is no greater in distance and there are plenty of flight options for a long weekend break. Both located on rivers summer is a great time to visit to enjoy their outdoor parks and programme of events and festivals on offer. Toronto has many cultural attractions to offer along with great shopping and you can also take in one of the natural wonders of the world “Niagara Falls”. Montreal is interesting, this French Canadian city is home of pilgrims of Notre Dam, I recommend a visit to the Montreal Story. A visit to the Olympic park is also excellent to see how they have utilised these facilities to include both sport and leisure. Most citizens are French speaking so a phrase book might be handy! Do you enjoy rail travel? If so this is a great little itinerary allowing you to experience changing scenery from Vancouver on the west coast, through the awesome Rockies continuing across the great plains on a journey finishing in Toronto. The journey includes 4 nights sleeping on your train. For this tour I would recommend tagging on a few days before if your time permits to enjoy my favourite city in the world Vancouver. Don’t miss historical Gas Town see the statue of Gassy Jack’ who hailed from our home city, Hull. Stanley Park is one of my favourite spots great for cycling, bikes can be hired very easily. For an easy overview of the city take a trolley tour but just be warned don’t get off in Stanley Park as you may not get back on! I am full of many tips to help you get the most out of your holiday when you make your booking. You will need to add a night in Toronto before flying home but I would recommend at least two. Ideally you should allow a minimum of 9 nights 10 days to includes your overnight flight home for this rail holiday. As for the maximum time, in my eyes there is no maximum, I have enjoyed so many visits to this country. The Calgary Stampede which takes place every July is an event I can guarantee will have your adrenalin flowing and at times sitting on the edge of your seat. This ideally requires 3 nights and would very easily add into an itinerary or make a short break on its own. Known as the greatest show on earth, I agree whole heartedly. Grab your Stetson join the cowboys, and enjoy the atmosphere! We tailor make most of our itineraries to this part of the world and many choose to include Alaska. We have clients take organised tours, we book many Titan as they include a home pick up and ensure you are travelling in a group. Independent travel is very easy in Canada and often set tours do not offer you exactly what you a wishing to experience. We look forward to organising your adventure, do remember Marion Owen Travel for all your travel arrangements, give my team a call. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can
replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we
will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley Hull & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

How much sleep do I need and is more than eight hours really dangerous?
New research has suggested that people who sleep for more than eight hours a day are more likely to have a stroke, adding to a wealth of advice and information about the optimal time to spend in bed.
School age children (6 -13 years) 9-11 hours per day
The new warning may seem farfetched, but it comes from a comprehensive study carried out at Cambridge University on the sleep patterns of more than 10,000 people. Those who got eight hours had a 46 per cent greater than average stroke risk.
Adults (26 - 64): 7 - 9 hours per day
Oversleeping (usually defined as more than nine hours a night) has previously been linked with health problems like diabetes and obesity – yet few consider eight hours to fall into that bracket. Sure enough, the National Sleep Foundation recently published new guidelines, produced with a team of medical scientists, to try and pin down exactly how much sleep we need. They defined the ideals, by age group, as follows: Newborns (0 - 3 months): 14-17 hours per day Infants (4 - 11 months): 12-15 hours per day Toddlers (1 - 2 years): 11-14 hours per day
36
Pre-school children (3 - 5 years) 10-13 hours per day
Teenagers (14 - 17 years) 8-10 hours per day Younger adults (18 - 25 years) 7-9 hours per day Older adults (65 years+) 7-8 hours per day Despite first appearances, the foundation probably not recommending an amount of sleep likely to make people have strokes. The latest study does not make clear whether extra sleep is causing health issues or simply an indicator or symptom of underlying conditions. Professor Kay-Tee Khaw, of the Cambridge Institute of Public Health and the study’s senior author, said “further research” was needed to establish what was “happening in the body to cause this link”. And Dr Madina Kara, research manager at the Stroke Association, said the study did not amount to evidence that too much sleep led to stroke, and urged anyone with concerns about their health to speak to their GP.

The Kiplingcotes Derby The Kiplingcotes Derby is said to be the oldest flat race in England, dating back to 1519, but it was not until 1669 that it became an endowed race thus ensuring its future. It traditionally takes place on the third Thursday in March and is a challenge to all who take part, whether riders or spectators, as the weather can be very unkind at this time of the year. This years race is on Thursday 19th March 2015
BeverleyMag MARCH 2015 The race covers a distance of 4 miles over farm lanes and tracks, starting at an old stone post on the grass verge in the parish of Etton, not far from the old Kiplingcotes railway station near Market Weighton, and finishing at Londesborough Wold Farm.

Herb Gardening
Those of you who think of herbs as just parsley, sage and thyme, think on. Herb expert Ian Ashbridge of Heritage Landscape Centre explains just how to grow and use them. Herbs are the quintessential plant: they look good, smell good and do you good. They have been used ever since humans have been on the earth, as medicines, perfumes, insect repellents and, of course, in food and flavouring. This huge group of plants includes trees, shrubs, annuals and even cacti, to name but a few. The most important thing to remember when growing herbs is that they are the foundation of all modern medicine. They are not the gentle namby-pamby things some would like you to think. They are healers, therefore they should be treated with respect, and if you are considering them for specific medicinal use always consult a doctor or qualified herbalist. If you are growing herbs for use in the kitchen then you need to learn about their flavour and how they can aid digestion. Growing herbs 40 Herbs, in most cases, are tough wild plants which, when spoilt by the lush conditions of a garden, will thrive and romp away. It’s a myth that all herbs like full sun, even good old basil likes partial shade at midday. So when planning your garden, you can divide your plants into two sections, those like thyme, sage, rosemary, french tarragon and oregano that like full sun; and those that like partial shade, such as rocket, sorrel, mizuna, mustard, parsley and chervil. Containers and window boxes If I had to choose some ‘must haves’ to put in a window box on the sunny side of the house I would include chives, oregano, lemon thyme and a creeping rosemary to drape over

GARDENING the edge. However, on the shady side of the house I would have a salad herb window box which would include wild rocket, chervil, French parsley and red mustard. When growing herbs in containers, I have two important tips. The first is to use a soil-based compost, either organic or something like John Innes potting compost. This is because there are very few herbs that grow in peat, and a soil-based compost retains moisture which is a must to stop containers drying out. I also advise watering in the morning rather than the evening because this gives the plants a chance if the temperatures are hot during the day, especially for containers grown in full sun. The second tip is to feed container plants weekly from March until September. This keeps the plants healthy, helps them produce leaves, especially on cut and come again salads. I use a seaweed-based feed, however you can use any proprietary feeds that boost leaf production.

BeverleyMag MARCH 2015 they are less concentrated than dried herbs, as they still contain all their moisture. One of my favourite teas is lemon verbena (Lemon Verbena leaves pictured right), which has a lovely flavour and aroma, and is refreshing served hot or cold either on a summer’s day, or last thing at night to help me get a good night’s sleep.
Remedies One of the easiest and best ways to extract the medicinal properties of the herbs is to make a tisane, or herb tea, which can be drunk just like ordinary tea, and can provide a helpful supplement to the daily diet. To obtain the best flavour I always recommend using fresh herbs, but remember that

General March Maintenance Continue to deadhead winter-flowering pansies and other winter bedding. Pansies will carry on into the spring and even to early summer, if attended to frequently. Deadhead the flowers of Narcissus (daffodils) as they fade, but allow the foliage to die down naturally. Herbaceous perennials infested with couch grass and other perennial weeds should be lifted so the roots of the weeds can be removed. Improve the soil by digging in organic matter before replanting. Clear up weedy beds before mulching. Lighter soils can be mulched now, but heavier soils are best left until March, when the soil is warmer. Mulching with a deep layer of organic matter helps to condition the soil, suppress weed growth, insulate plant roots from temperature fluctuations, and conserve soil moisture during the summer. Bulbs coming up in the rock garden or in containers may benefit from overhead protection from the rain. A sheet of glass or perspex placed on piles of bricks will do the job. Top dress spring-flowering alpines with grit or gravel to show off the plants and to help prevent stem rots. Mulch may need 44 replacing after weed removal. Improve the drainage of heavy soils by working in lots of organic matter. Perennials putting on plenty of growth may need support by the end of the month. Check whether containers need watering. Even at this time of year, they can dry out. Pots that are sheltered by eaves or balconies can miss out on any rainfall. If in doubt, check the compost at a hand’s depth to see if it feels dry. Aim to keep pots moist, not wet, and don’t let them dry out.
Pots and tubs benefit from topping up with fresh John Innes compost. Old compost can be removed and replaced with new if there is not much room for topping up. Feed borders with a general-purpose fertiliser at the manufacturer’s recommended rate. It is best to get supports in early, so that the plants grow up through them, covering them discreetly. Adding rigid supports afterwards usually looks unattractive and results in bunched stems lacking sufficient ventilation. Criss-crossing strings from hidden or decorative posts work well, allowing stems to grow up in the gaps between strings. In mild areas, you should remove winter coverings of fleece, straw, polythene etc, to prevent new shoots being damaged. In cold areas, you are best waiting until the risk of frost has passed. Planning ahead You may wish to get your sweet pea wigwam growing supports ready. In mild areas, you can transplant young plants to the feet of the wigwam, using a light twine to tie them in.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
SPRING CLEANING
My garage is a disaster. Does anyone use theirs anymore for their car? I’m one of those people that thinks things will come in handy one day. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s in good condition, so off it goes into the realm of my garage. And that’s why I now need a skip! I’m not even sure I know what’s out there anymore! My husband now says to me when I tell (sorry ask) him to put something there to store “When was the last time you looked in the garage. It won’t fit!” Sometimes I wish I could be like one of my brothers who has a great scheme – if he hasn’t used something for 6 months he gets rid of it. I just know that if I did that, come 6 months and one week later I would be frantically searching for that very useful item, whatever it might be! Anyway, I can’t tell you how pleased I am that it’s time for spring cleaning because I also 46 need to have a good clear out in the house – and for that, yes you’ve guessed it, I need the garage! So – skip first, clear out second.
HOMAGE TO IRON MEN
No I don’t mean those men who undertake long distance triathlons or the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark (for all you Marvel fans) but those unsung heroes who relieve the pressure of a particularly hateful chore. I love my husband. That goes without saying! But what I really love about him is that he does all our ironing because I hate it! It’s not that I can’t iron, I just don’t like doing it – and he does it so much better than me! Or at least that’s what I tell him! He may go into the office at 6:30am every morning to catch up on work, or more likely to avoid the nightmare that is getting the children up, breakfasted and out for school, but at least they’re crease-free! And he’s not alone! There are lots of them out there – so I say “Thank you and well done to all those Mr Browns, Mr Robinsons and others! Your efforts in this thankless task have been noted!”
