BeverleyMag May 2015 Dear Readers Hello and welcome to the May edition of Beverley Mag. This month we have two great competitions for you to enter. How about winning tickets to see ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ at Hull New theatre in June, performed by Beverley Musical Theatre. Alternatively we have tickets up for grabs for the Clarkson, May and Hammond show at the Sheffield Arena, so don’t forget to send your postcards in! Our May garden feature is full of hints and tips to help you make your garden great with a special feature on how to look after your roses by Heritage Landscape Centre, Melton who are the largest stockists of David Austen roses in the area. Also, look out for the news from East Riding Council who are offering all residents free compost. This month in our ‘Ask Mandi’ column, Mandi looks at midlife career changes and offers advice to one of our readers who is facing redundancy. Our local MP Graham Stuart continues with his column, but with the election just around the corner on May 7th, will it be all change next month? Looking for some top tips to improve your appearance, check out the Health, Beauty and Wellbeing feature and let us know how you get on. Finally, we would really like to hear from our younger readers on what they do in their spare time in Beverley, what amenities they would like to see in Beverley and information about any groups or clubs they are involved in. Just email me us at: ask@ beverleymag.co.uk and we will publish some of your comments. Kind regards

HEART Campaign I care passionately about improving the NHS in our area. That’s why when I discovered that response times in Holderness were below the national average, I set up the Holderness Emergency Ambulance Response Times campaign (HEART). In October 2013, I presented a petition on behalf of over 700 residents to the Chief Executive of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. After working with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to improve these response times, I’m pleased to say that they have started to get better. As part of my HEART Campaign, I want to see Public Access Defibrillators in every community in Beverley & Holderness, with as many people as possible trained in how to use one and everybody knowing where they are. In September last year, I cycled around Holderness, visiting rural villages to find out if they had their own defibrillator and where it was located. I’m now encouraging the parishes that don’t have a defibrillator to begin a project to get one installed. I’ve also produced a basic ‘How To’ guide on getting a defibrillator for

your village and the Community Heartbeat Trust have made a recommendation on the best type of defibrillator to get. I’ve been delighted at the response of local residents, with many communities taking up the challenge and setting up campaigns to raise funds for their own defibrillator. The British Heart Foundation provides ‘Heartstart’ training for people who want to learn more about how they could help somebody who has suffered a cardiac arrest. For more information about courses near you, please head to their website https://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/how-wehelp/training/heartstart-uk.aspx or call 0131 554 6953.

Pulling the Plug on Your Virtual Life Most of us use Social Media now whether it is Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. and that’s before we come to online banking, Amazon and Ebay for online shopping. All of these will still be active on our death and if we do not leave instructions as to how these accounts should be dealt with. Each company has its own rules about entitlement and formalities to be undertaken before our representatives can gain access to our accounts. What would happen if someone did not know a specific account existed? The Law Society recommends that everybody should complete and maintain a Personal Asset Log to include both real and digital assets. Your Executors would then have a thorough list to ensure that all of the personal information which we have stored online will be dealt with after our death, it means that precious photographs will not be lost and accounts can be closed to avoid the possibility of fraudsters using them.

The administration of an estate can be a particularly difficult task for the ones we leave behind; not only are they grieving, they are trying to do exactly what they think the deceased would have wanted. You can make things easier for your loved ones firstly by making a Will and, secondly, completing and maintaining a Personal Assets Log for ALL of your real and digital assets to ensure that there is no virtual life after death. A Better You

Improve your Brainpower It used to be thought that the brain was hardwired and that, unlike other organs, it could not repair itself or restore lost functions once damaged or diseased. Now we know that, in fact, the brain is neuroplastic – that activity and mental experience can be used to change the structure of the connections within it. These new principles are being used to radically improve, and even sometimes cure, some brain problems that were previously seen as irreversible – and some of them can also be used in everyday life to improve our brain’s health and performance.

Walk two miles a day Regular exercise, such as walking, has been shown to be a key factor in reducing the risk of dementia by 60%. One reason may be that when animals go on very long walks it is usually to seek out a new, unexplored territory in which to live – because they are fleeing a predator, or because food has run out where they live. The brain, in anticipation of the fact that the animal is going to have to learn a lot about this new territory, releases growth factors, which act like growth-promoting fertiliser in the brain, allowing it to build connections between cells more easily as it learns. Brutal exercise is not needed: the amount required to contribute to a lower risk of dementia is walking 2 miles, or cycling 10 miles, five days a week.

Learn a new dance, language or instrument As we get older, and particularly as we enter middle age, we are no longer taxing our brains as much as we did when we were at school. Most of middle age is the replaying of already-mastered skills, such as reading the paper and repeating familiar tasks at work.

8

To maintain an ageing brain requires novelty and taxing exercise: doing something as difficult as learning a new language or a new dance, or how to play a new musical instrument. These activities engage a part of the brain called the nucleus basalis, which is responsible for helping us to pay attention and to consolidate new connections in the brain when we learn. Ideally, practise daily for an hour or so, with high-quality, focused concentration.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey areas

& William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of

people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Three Simple Steps to Dramatically Improve Your Appearance Sometimes we fall into a beauty routine. We become comfortable with the way we dress, style our hair and wear our make up. It becomes such a ritual that we stop looking at ways we can change our looks or freshen our appearance. There are some simple things you can do to dramatically improve your appearance and revitalise your looks without having to change your core sense of style or personal taste. Little things can make a big difference, not only in the way you look, but the way you feel. Sometimes changing it up a bit is all you need feel younger, smile more and generally radiate a little more brightly. Start with your smile. A bright smile is often overlooked. As we get older, we lose the routine of six month check ups at the dentist. If it’s been a while for you, pop into the dentist 10 for a cleaning and have you teeth checked. You probably haven’t even noticed how dull your teeth have become, but once you have them professionally polished, you’ll see the difference right away.

Show off your legs and give yourself a quick tan. A little illuminator or mineral make up mixed with your favourite moisturiser makes a fantastic and radiant bronzer for your legs. Put away those tights and show off your legs the next time you wear a skirt, by mixing up your own temporary self tanner. Flutter those lashes! Take the plunge with a nice long pair of false eyelashes to brighten up your peepers. False eyelashes are easy to apply and will instantly transform the way your eyes look. Fluttering those beautiful lashes can increase your sense of flirtatiousness as well, so why not get bold and add some dramatic colour while you’re at it. False eyelashes are a great way to add a little glamour for both your look and personality and pull you out of your regular routine.

How Aloe Vera helped my ‘nearest and dearest’! by Deb Pickering If you have read any of my earlier articles, you will know that Aloe Vera is so much more than Sun-cream and toilet paper! You can drink Aloe Vera and you can apply it on your skin. From gums to bums, it can help with so many issues so here are just a few. 1. For me personally, I have found it amazing for helping me to go to the loo. After a hysterectomy I was almost permanently constipated and spent a lot of time bloated and uncomfortable - sometimes in agony. Drinking Aloe Vera sorted that for me and I can now go every day without any discomfort at all. 2. My husband fell in love with Aloe Vera when he decided that he desperately needed to lose weight. Neither of us have ever dieted or calorie counted and thought dieting had to be eating salads, lose weight then stop eating salads and put the weight on again. How wrong we were. There is a Cleanse and Detox programme using Aloe Vera as a key ingredient and my husband has now lost 2 stone and only has a few pounds to go before reaching his ideal weight!

12

3. My Dad was recently diagnosed Diabetic, partly due to the fact that exercise was near impossible for him as he has arthritis in his hips and knees so exercising was really painful. He started drinking Aloe Vera, which also had MSM Glucosamine and Chondroitin in. He also used an

"Use of arms" workshop BEVERLEY, 13th, June, 2015 2PM TO 4.30PM - £25 Book a place now! Discover the ease that is possible when using your arms via the Alexander Technique

Aloe rub with MSM to work from the outside. Now my Mum and Dad can go for a walk everyday! 4. One of my close friends asked if I could help her with digestive problems. She said she has daily bloating and there are many foods that she cannot eat as it just makes her condition chronic. She started drinking the Aloe Vera gel drink and not only did it ease the bloating but there are many foods she just couldn’t tolerate that she can now eat in small quantities! 5. Another of my close friends has the worst case of Psoriasis I have ever seen. His skin is not only dry, it cracks and bleeds and looks really nasty and sore. After 6 weeks of using an Aloe Vera creme that also contains bee Propolis (which bees use to make the hive antiseptic for the Queen), his skin is healed and just ever so slightly pink. No more flaking here! 6. My son has had gum disease for years. Every time he goes to the dentist, he has to see the Hygienist. Until last time, when his dentist complimented him on his oral hygiene! What had he done different? He changed his tooth paste to an Aloe Vera tooth gel. Aloe Vera kills bacteria and stops plaque build up and prevents Gingivitis. There is even a killer whale that has the same tooth gel! Can’t be bad. I could go on; but if you think Aloe Vera is good for burns, especially sunburn. You would be right. If you think it is great for soothing a sore bum (or piles) you would be right there too; but it is so much more. If you have a specific need, maybe Aloe could help you too?

Singin’ in the Rain Hull New Theatre will be flooded with water this June when Beverley Musical Theatre perform SIngin’ in the Rain. There will be 10,000 litres of water on stage to recreate the iconic street scene where Gene Kelly danced around in the rain with his brolly and soaked to the skin ( incidently he had flu when he filmed it and had to do it in one take) There will be over 40 umbrellas on stage to make a real spectacle even the orchestra will have them just in case they get splashed. But the audience will remain perfectly dry. Chris Holmes who is playing the lead Don Lockwood is a music and drama specialist and has been teaching the cast to tap at his dance studio as well as choreographing many of the big song and dance scenes, a man of many talents. The leading lady Eleanor Hutchinson who is playing Kathy, has just been accepted into 14 London school of music and at 18 is a very professional a competent actress. Singin’ in the Rain is a light hearted, fun show which is full of songs everyone is familiar with and the principals and cast will make sure audiences will leave with a ray of sunshine.

Minding the Minster It’s surprising just how ignorant people are about what goes on in Beverley Minster. I’ve been asked in all seriousness, if we open on Sundays. Well, yes we do, because that’s our real job. Another time I overheard someone say, in tones of complete amazement: “They do weddings in here.” Yes, we’ve probably being doing weddings on this very site, for more than 1300 years, so we’re quite experienced at it by now.



But it’s in the non-churchy areas where we surprise people most. Yes, we do concerts in the Minster, and not just religious ones: we’ve had a Johnny Cash tribute band (pictured top right) performing to a packed house as well as world-famous brass bands and guitarists. We are a venue for dinners: recently we were the setting for the Mayor of Beverley’s end of term event and later this year we are being 16 revisited by the Prince’s Trust.

Ask Mandi Dear Mandi

Mandi works as a Aftercare Therapist and Coach for the Jeremy Kyle Show. Mandi has a regular column in the magazine to answer all your questions. So if you would like to ask Mandi a question about life, love, relationships or anything that you feel she could help you with please email her in confidence to: mandi@ Any correspondence printed will have your identity changed and will be totally annonymous.

Oh dear, what a pickle I’m in and I so I really could do with your advice. I’ve been working at the same company for about 25 years and they’ve just announced that there are to be redundancies in 3 months time, and it looks like I’ll be one of the ones to go. Yes I’ll receive good redundancy pay, but that’s it. I’m 55, all my children have left home, all I know is how to do office work. Even if I was to re-train in something as friends keep telling me to do, whose going to employ me at my age? I feel so upset, low and worried about my future as I still very much want to work. What can I do Mandi as I’m at such a loss. Laura, (Beverley) Dear Laura, As I read your email, I thought back to the time I was made redundant, well 3 times actually, and remembered the feeling of dread & despair very well, so I very much empathise with your feelings. News like this is shocking and upsetting, especially after you have worked somewhere for so long. Continued on page 20

Ask Mandi I am, however, a great believer in things happen for a reason, so perhaps see this as a sign to do something more fun & interesting with your life. In your longer email you mentioned your job, though ‘safe’ was quite dull & boring. So yes, maybe it is time for a change. Make a note of all the things you’ve always wanted to do jobwise, just let yourself be free as you write. Then write a list of all the things you’re good at. You can then begin to think of combining the two. Pop along to the job centre and ask to speak to a careers adviser, there are a whole range of courses out there, that are either government funded or charge very little. Perhaps your redundancy pay could help pay for a course that will help you qualify in one of your dream jobs.

20

You could even start up your own business, it really isn’t as difficult as you think and there is a lot of support out there, all found on the internet. And for goodness sake, don’t let your age be a barrier, it’s not, you are in the prime of your life still, so think positively.

The world really is your oyster, see it that way and just go for it. Enjoy your new & exciting career life. Mandi x

Travel & Days Out

Vietnam & Cambodia...

30

WOW! I have just had the most amazing enriching 18 days in this wonderful part of the world. Each day just brought a completely new experience. I will try to give you a short insight although I could do with pages. The historic old fashioned capital city of Hanoi with it’s millions of cycles felt to me more like China years ago! Travelling out of the city to Halong Bay it was noticeable that the farmland was all tendered by hand not a machine in sight. UNESCO Halong Bay offers a relaxing break sailing amongst stunning scenery. Here we visited a fabulous cave system on foot and enjoyed Kayaking. A short internal flight and we arrived in cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City still called Saigon locally and you would think a different country, bright lights, a real party atmosphere, Honda’s replacing rickshaws and bicycles of the north! We visited the nearby Cu Chi War Tunnels plus free time to visit the city sights & markets. Travelling through the countryside the farmers had machines, unbelievable difference yet still the same country! Joining our River ship it was good to unpack our cases on our lovely ship for the coming week. Sailing upstream from wide to narrow waters we visited floating villages and towns built on stilts. We had talks on board about the river and how the local communities exist and cope with the changes in river levels. The flooding season in our summer sees a huge rise in waters hence the need for residents to either live in floating or stilted houses. The fishing is very important to their existence and the floods at the moment bring an abundance of fish but they fear in the future this may change with the damming up stream. We really did see life along the banks, stopping at villages where mud steps had been cut in the bank for us to get ashore. We met happy smiling, friendly locals and experienced all sorts of local transport! Arriving in Cambodia could this be a let down? Definitely not the diversity of this holiday just continued. The sad side to Cambodia is their recent history of the Khmer Rouge, the killing fields & S21 prison brought this home to me. On a happier note we visited the magnificent Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, its bustling city centre and huge market. Then out into the countryside, we were welcomed by local schools and cottage industries. At a temple we had the honour of a Buddhist blessing and the opportunity to learn of the monks day to day lives. Arriving in Siam Reap this was a wonderful place to finish our tour. The area has amazing, ancient temples each one fascinating & different. Angkor Wat at sunrise a must ,my favourite photo - Angkor Thom. If you would like to know more and travel yourself we have special offers available. This tour is fully guided throughout to ensure you have the very best experience possible. 100th MEMBER FOR BEVERLEY FITMUMS

A fitness group which has helped hundreds of people across the East Riding to keep fit while having fun has welcomed the 100th member to its Beverley branch. The Beverley group of Fitmums and Friends celebrated the milestone by inviting members from its other groups across the East Riding to join them for a get-together and a trial run of the Beverley 10k. A certificate was presented to the 100th Beverley member Penny Hunter by Fitmums founder Sam Barlow. Sam said: “it is amazing to welcome Penny as our 100th member. I can’t quite believe how Fitmums keeps on growing but it does and it is so lovely to see the reaction of people achieving things they didn’t think were possible”. Beverley Fitmums and Friends is supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s public health service and is open to members of both sexes and all ages.

The project has about 500 members across the East Riding, helping adults and children to take up running and fitness walking while having fun. It welcomes anyone, mums, dads, grandparents and friends, and uses a unique coaching technique to ensure that everyone feels supported and encouraged to keep going, with no-one left behind. The Beverley group meets on Tuesday mornings during term-time at Beverley Leisure Centre, where child-care is available, and on Thursday evenings at Longcroft School. Sam launched Fitmums six years ago by inviting other mums at her child’s school to meet up to go for a run, with the aim of keeping fit and making new friends. She was recently named as a public health ‘hero’ after winning a Department of Health recognition award for excellence in public health and wellbeing. Anyone interested in joining Fitmums and Friends can get more details about the group by visiting www.fitmums.org.uk or ring 07870 654586.

Pets

Beverley At Vets4Pets Beverley, we believe in keeping your pets happy and healthy! As part of your preventative healthcare routine for your loved one, we recommend regular parasite protection from your vet. There are many different types of parasites which can affect your furry friend but to keep it simple we want to give you the basics on the most common ones!

Fleas

Fleas are very small and are often hard to detect. If your pet has a heavy infestation, you may see fleas on close examination of the coat. The best way to check for fleas is to check for ‘flea dirt’, which are brown/black specks seen in the pet’s coat. These are composed of dried specks of blood extracted by the flea. The best way to check for flea dirt is to comb through your pet’s coat onto a wet piece of kitchen roll or paper. If the specks turn red/brown, then you know your pet has fleas. Adult fleas are tiny dark brown, wingless insects which can jump up to 165 times their own length and easily spread by contact from one animal to another. In adult cats (and humans) the main problem is the flea bite, which leads to irritation and skin allergy problems. Fleas can also spread feline infectious anaemia (FIA), a potentially fatal disease in cats.

Effective and regular flea control will help make sure your pet and your house stay flea free.

Lungworm

Lungworm is a parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if left untreated. As an adult worm, it lives in the heart and blood vessels that supply the lungs in dogs and foxes. Dogs catch lungworm through eating slugs and snails which carry the larvae of the parasite. While most dogs do not routinely eat slugs and snails for pleasure, they may do so by accident e.g. when drinking from a puddle, licking grass or generally just having a sniff around. Some dogs on the other hand do enjoy munching on these garden pests and although not every snail or slug carries the worm, if your pet regularly eats snails/slugs then there is a risk of them picking up this worm at some point. At Vets4Pets Beverley, we will work with you to ensure your pet has the right treatment plan to help them remain protected, no matter what their lifestyle.

Register your pet with us today and claim a free flea and worm consult & treatment. Terms and conditions apply,

please ask in surgery for more details.

GARDENING

Rose Care We are delighted to announce that The Heritage Landscape Garden Centre at Melton is now the largest stockist of David Austin Roses in the area. After fifty years of intensive breeding, David Austin’s English Roses combine the beautiful forms and wonderful fragrances of old roses with the wider colour range and repeat-flowering nature of modern roses. Their Rose Garden exhibit at the last Chelsea Flower Show was awarded a Gold. This takes their total to eighteen gold medals at this prestigious flower show. As a group, English Roses are healthy, reliable and very easy to grow. They quickly form magnificent, shapely shrubs, or many can be trained as short climbers.

40

Choosing a Variety Your choice of rose is very personal. Make sure that the dimensions of the rose suit its position, although please bear in mind that the dimensions given are approximations. The actual sizes that each rose will reach will vary, depending on factors such as the soil type, fertility and moisture levels, the amount of sunlight and the way you prune your roses. Planting Position Select a site with at least a few hours of sun each day where the roots of the rose will not be in competition with the roots of other plants, especially trees and hedges. The exception to this rule are the ramblers which grow well near to trees. Planting Distances If you have the space English Roses, Old Roses and other Shrub Roses look superb planted in groups of three of one variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border. We suggest planting approximately 18” (45cm) apart within the group. Adjacent plants of neighbouring varieties should be planted approximately 2’ 6” to 3’ (75-100cm) away. For hedges for maximum effect, plant fairly close together 18” (45cm). Soil Type Roses will grow in a wide range of soils, but whatever type they

do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of a generous quantity of well rotted manure or garden compost before planting will help to ensure strong growth. Planting On arrival, plant as soon as possible, never allowing the roots to dry out. When planted the base of the stems should be about 3” (7.5cm) below ground level. If immediate planting is impossible, keep the roses in the sealed bag or box in a cold but frost free place for no more than two weeks or heel the roses in. We recommend the use of Start when planting. Feeding All roses, especially the repeat flowering varieties, greatly appreciate the application of fertilizer. We use David Austin Rose Food here at the nursery and apply it to all the roses at the start of the growing season (March or April in the UK) and again in June to the repeat-flowering varieties. Many other fertilizers are suitable. Please follow the recommendations on the packet for the rate and frequency of application. Excessive nitrogen can make roses more susceptible to both pests and diseases. Mulching and Watering Roses particularly appreciate a moist and cool root run which is easily attainable by generous mulching in spring and occasional deep waterings. This is particularly important in climates with hot, dry summers where the waterings should be frequent enough to keep the soil moist at all times. Healthy Roses The best way to keep your plants free from pests and diseases is to grow them as well as possible, however, an occasional spray can be very beneficial. The most effective sprays are those at the start of the season before symptoms develop, but beware of frosts the night after spraying – they will scorch the leaves badly. Systhane is best for combating rust and blackspot. Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic or SB Plant Invigorator, which are both foliar feeds, help control disease. SB Plant Invigorator is also effective against pests.

GARDENING

May Gardening

Beware treacherous late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until the middle of the month and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold (ideally on a dry day to desiccate the victims) - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Remember these systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Dandelions are a monstrous nuisance at this time of year - if you don’t have time to deal with them terminally, at least chop their heads off before they set seed.

42

Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as

convenient! The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers etc. do need watering every day). Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well-rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or ready-made soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch.

GARDENING Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae. Other unwelcome visitors on the move are lily beetles (bright red little darlings with black heads and their yellow larvae), black-spotted green caterpillars or the gooseberry sawfly. Lawns Lawn mowing is high on the agenda - leave it too long between cuts and the job becomes much harder, so try to mow weekly. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so. May is the last chance for sowing a new lawn this spring - if you are unsure how to tackle making a new lawn, please ask for help and advice with one of our specialist advertisers in the Beverley Mag.

REMINDER - FREE COMPOST TO BE GIVEN AWAY TO EAST RIDING RESIDENTS Around 4,500 bags of compost are to be given away for free by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Residents will be able to go along and collect their compost at giveaway events held across the East Riding in May. People will be entitled to two free 15kg bags of compost per car, which will be placed in their vehicles by council staff. All the compost being given away has been recycled from the garden and food waste that householders in the area have put into their brown bins.

Residents are asked not to queue beforehand or they may be turned away for safety reasons.

Mike Featherby, the council’s head of streetscene services, said: “Our annual compost giveaways are a gesture from the council to say thank you to the residents of the East Riding for their efforts in recycling, especially their garden and food waste.”

The dates for the compost giveaways are as follows:

The giveaways start at 4pm at each site and end when all the bags have been given away on a first come first served basis.

19th May - Beverley, Annie Reed Road off Grovehill Road, HU17 0LF

6th May – Hornsea, Broadway Car Park, HU18 1PZ 13th May - Market Weighton, Market Car Park, YO43 3AJ

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. SUPERMARKET RECEIPTS AND VOUCHERS

I think it’s great that supermarkets are making us all think about reusing our carrier bags in an effort to save the environment by either making us pay for them or encouraging us to buy lifelong bags. What I don’t understand is why they don’t think more about all the paper they use when handing over our receipts. It seems that it’s no longer enough to simply give us a receipt for the goods we have bought. Oh no. They now insist on giving us four or more other bits of paper telling us about their latest offer for online shopping, how we can get double points on our loyalty cards when we next shop (as long as it’s within 2 weeks), money off coupons if we spend a certain amount of money on our next shop or some other advertising spiel! These offers tend to be linked to our loyalty cards, for which we provide an email address when we first sign up, so why don’t they just email us the offers rather than wasting all that paper? I don’t know about you but most of these bits of paper go into the bin or 46 they end up living in my handbag for far too many months to admit, at which point I have a good clear out because I can’t find anything in it anymore! And, of course, none of the above offers can be used because they are all out-of-date! AND WHILE WE’RE ON THE SUBJECT…

Continuing my slight supermarket rant, I also wanted to ask what you thought about being told how much you have saved shopping with them rather than one of their competitors. Whilst I think it’s always rather nice to know you’ve bought your groceries a little bit cheaper (and to be honest who doesn’t feel a little bit smug about it ?!), why is it that they then offer us a “money off” voucher for that amount to use on your next shop? You either end up losing the coupon or leaving it at home when you next pop in, by which time it’s out-of-date because, yet again, it has to be used within about 2 weeks. If they were really serious about giving you your money back they would take it off your bill at the same shop! BEDTIME CHATTERBOX

“Anyone who thinks the art of conversation is dead should try talking to a child at bedtime!” I read this on the Netmums website and it made me laugh so I just had to share it with you - because it is so true and I’m sure it will resonate with lots of parents and grandparents out there! Fiona x

Check Out Our Brand New Look!

We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?

Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)

There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!

To contact BEVERLEYMAG please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 503 091 Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.
