Dear Readers, Hello and welcome to the September edition of your Beverley Mag! Now that the children are back at school after the summer holidays we can all breath a sigh of relief. I know that such a long break can wear out the most patient of parents!! There are lots of great events and things to do in our what’s on pages including the Vintage, Retro and Hand Made Fair at Beverley Minster. I know my husband is looking forward to this as he is an avid collector of vintage. There will be lots to see, do and buy at the Vintage Fair and I do recommend you pay it a visit if you have not been to one before - and best of all is it’s free to get in!!! This month we have a great feature on Autumn Weddings which is supported by the regions finest professionals who specialise in providing everything a would be bride and groom could possibly require for their special day. We also have some fantastic advice from local brides who want to pass on the pearls of wisdom that enabled them to enjoy their weddings. In this edition we also look at the new East Riding Theatre, Information Technology advice from Steve Elliott, Gardening advice for September from Ian at Heritage Landscapes, Fiona Dwyer invites us to share her wry take on life plus lots more. We are now only a month away from The East Yorkshire Business Expo (see pages 36/37) and I know I shall be seeing a lot of the business advertisers at this event. It is still the best place to go to get new business and attend free seminars that can help you get the most from your business. And it’s not too late to book a stand if you wish to promote your service, product or business. And finally…. Remember, we love to hear from you so if you have a story to tell, or a comment to make, please do get in touch. Kind regards

WORK STARTS ON MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS AT BEVERLEY LEISURE COMPLEX

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said:” I am delighted that we are able to launch this latest investment in leisure and health across the East Riding, following our recent significant investments in Haltemprice and Bridlington, and there is no doubt that this new Tone Zone will be an invaluable improvement to what is already a hugely popular facility in Beverley.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is pleased to announce that work on a £1.2m scheme of major improvements at Beverley Leisure Complex started today (Wednesday 27 August). The state of the art Tone Zone health and fitness facility will be double the size of the existing gym – with around 90 stations – and will offer a wide range of high-tech resistance and cardiovascular equipment, as well as a purpose built spin room. The new facility, aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of users, will be at the rear of the Leisure Complex, and the existing gym will be converted into a dance studio. The project is expected to take around eight months to complete.

“This council will continue to invest in leisure and health facilities which are of direct benefit to our residents, and our prudent financial management over a period of many years allows us to maintain this investment programme. Investment like this today is in reality a saving for taxpayers tomorrow – we are encouraging people to be active and so improve their health and wellbeing, which in turn will mean less demand on the region’s health services in the future. “We are aiming high with this new facility, and want to see one million visits a year to the Complex when this work is completed.” The new Tone Zone will boast the latest Matrix equipment – the same brand as currently available at the Complex – but with new features such as Virtual Active software, which will give users a choice of location to run or cycle through, from Hollywood streets to tracks around the Grand Canyon. Users will also be able to watch TV and listen to their MP3 player on the machines. An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said : “We would like to reassure our customers that disruption during these building works will be kept to an absolute minimum, and that the Tone Zone fitness suite will not close at any stage.” During the works, classes such as pilates and yoga will still be held in the function room at the Complex, and larger classes will still take place in the sports hall.

GARDENING

Gardening in September Start your compost Start your compost going by buying a compost bin or building a partially enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It is essential to replace the goodness in soil and autumn produces quantities of garden waste that will add invaluable organic richness back into your soil next spring. Remember to add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable plants are ideal but NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material to your compost heap - it will nurture whatever villain you are trying to eliminate with loving care! Clear garden debris Keep weeding; most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and systemic weedkillers will carry on working throughout the winter. Also clear any debris and diseased material from your garden. Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden will reappear next spring with a vengeance so get rid of them now. Burn diseased material and put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost. Clean out the greenhouse Once tomatoes and other greenhouse crops are over, give the greenhouse a thorough clean to prevent pests from making a home in that lovely warm environment, ready to leap into action next spring.............

Dig clay soil If your soil is heavy clay, start digging it over now - add plenty of organic matter to improve the quality and pea shingle to improve the drainage. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the cold will break the lumps down, making spring planting infinitely easier! Watering Should September turn into an Indian summer, remember to keep watering thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often. Containers and hanging baskets need watering every day. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in dry periods - camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. continued on page13

BeverleyMag SEPTEMBER 2014 Planting With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. The key to successful planting is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Lawns Established lawns - reduce the frequency of mowing now and towards the end of the month. Scarify (rake out the old dead grass and moss) by hand (hard work!) or with a machine, spike to improve drainage again either by hand with a garden fork or with a machine, add a top dressing of soil/sand/compost mixed according to your soil type (ask for advice at your local garden centre if you are unsure) and feed with autumn lawn feed. This low-nitrogen feed strengthens grass in preparation for winter; do not use spring lawn feed as this encourages grass to grow and it may not survive the cold. After all this your lawn will look dreadful, but fear not, it will benefit enormously from the regime. Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and broken edges too. New lawns - now is the time to start making a

new lawn. Good preparation is vital whether you are laying turf or sowing seed: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture. Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks. Top Ten Wedding-Planning Tips from recent Newlyweds You’re a planning bride: You’re constantly looking at top wedding blogs, pinning has become your second job, and your wedding coordinator is on speed dial (or, if you don’t have one, then you feel like you’re ready to become one). But you can never fully anticipate the wedding day until (gulp) it’s finally here. That’s why we turned to recently married couples for their best advice. They’ve walked down the aisle, they’ve said “I Do” and have partied like crazy at their reception. Then, when all of the craziness calmed down and they returned from their honeymoons, they whispered their “best advice” to us...and we’re passing it down to you!

3. Do A First Look. “It was one of the best decisions we made during our wedding planning. Our photographer and videographer collaborated and found a secluded area, away from all the madness that was going on that morning; we got a moment to see each other for the first time. It allowed us to take a deep breath, let the moment sink in, feel all the emotion we were about to feel all day. No matter what you decide, the important thing is choosing what’s right for you as a couple.” Leah and Kevin

1. Take Your Time. “Matt and I planned our wedding for sixteen months, and it really helped to keep stress levels down. We got tons of stuff done early and had time to save for the things we really wanted. You only get to plan your wedding once, so make sure it is a fun time, not a stressful one!” - Claire and Matt

2. Be Present In Each Moment. “On your wedding day, soak up all the love, joy and bliss! Enjoy!” Rachel and Paul

BeverleyMag SEPTEMBER 2014

Autumn Weddings

4. Don’t Get Caught Up In “Perfection.” “This event is an expression of yourselves, but it’s not all you’ll ever be. It’s just the beginning! In fact, some of the best moments were ones we didn’t plan for at all—like a fabulous photograph of my dress train all tangled up with leaves and dirt. Sure, it was messy and not what you’re used to seeing in bridal magazines, but it was also honest and a truly joyful moment that could easily have gone south if we’d been uptight about things. Embrace the unexpected, and each others’ opinions, and don’t let an unattainable ideal sour the big picture: You’re in this together, now and for the future.” - Teresa and Ben 5. Have Faith That All Of Your Efforts Will Be Worth It. “Before my wedding, I remember my sister telling me that her wedding day was the BEST day of her life, and she was so excited that I would soon be able to experience mine. When I was in the midst of planning my wedding, the long, daily to-do lists and the stress made me feel as if that day would never come. However, it eventually did! When it came, I tried my best to savour every moment of the wedding day—from the moment I got out of bed to the moment I walked out of my village church as a married woman— and I’d advise brides and grooms out there to do the same.” - Jodie and Daniel

17

6. Share Something Personal And Unique. “Reading from The Lovely Love Story was the best decision we made for our wedding! Our guests couldn’t stop talking about how adorable and memorable it was, and we still get a bunch of guests sharing random dinosaur posts on our Facebook walls. We also ended up getting amazing wedding films, since it gave the cinematographers something really emotional to connect all of the pieces together. Cinematographers are storytellers, so having a unifying element to drive your love story will truly leave lasting impression in your wedding films.” - Lisa and Jonathan

We wanted people to walk away saying, ‘That was so much fun.’ And we were able to accomplish that. Choose the few things that are really important to you, like the photographer and DJ were to us, and then go from there. Be flexible on the other details and remember to have fun.” - Laura and Scott

18

7. Try Not To Stress. “Remember why you are getting married, and try to truly make it be an event about (and for) the both of you. Have faith in your vendors and photographer, and trust that they will do their job well! And once it’s happening, just go with it. One of my favorite memories is calling my dad after he walked me to the dock to meet Jim because he had my vows in his jacket pocket! Everyone laughed, and so did I. Even though our event was teeny-tiny, it still flew by. Remember to take a few minutes alone with your husband or wife. I’m so happy that our photographer Stacey suggested that we walk ahead of her while she snapped pics, which ended up being a really sweet time for us as brand-new newlyweds!” - Jules and Jim

9. Accept That You Can’t Please Everyone. “You cannot make everyone happy, and trying to accommodate others will just make the whole process more daunting. This is your day; make it about you. It really is the only day that you will get that chance.”- Helen & Kris 10. Be A Team Throughout The Process. “No matter how well-intentioned, friends and family will undoubtedly lend advice, opinions, and even objections to your decisions. It’s easy for you two to become divided. But in the end, this is a celebration of your love and future together, and so every choice should be yours alone. Keep your focus on what matters most, forget what you think you should or shouldn’t do, and go with your heart. - Adam & Anne

All inclusive ...

What is an all inclusive holiday? It can be a hot potato as it varies, hence this month I will pick out a few examples to help you get the jist of things! I have chosen to concentrate on suitable getaways mainly for grown ups! Hotels can vary tremendously, you may have to pay for upgrades to a special restaurant, only have local branded drinks which mean the extras can still add up. Sandals offer fabulous locations in the Caribbean and all the drinks are premium brands and available 24/7, accommodation is luxurious, unlimited land & watersports include complimentary instruction. Where your chosen hotel has a golf course, green fees are free too. You will not be stuck for dining options too with up to 11 restaurant choices all included in your price ~ giving you excellent value for your money. What about an experience closer to home? You perhaps don’t like to fly. Fred Olsen are not as inclusive as above but do offer a drinks package on their cruises from just £10 per person per day, a G&T before dinner plus a couple of glasses of wine and your quid’s in! With no bar bill at the end of the cruise this feels good. All food on board is included as is room service. Excursions & tips are extra. I have popped an example adjacent. The ultimate cruising experience “Regent” are top of the bill. You want for nothing in fact you can leave your purse at home. All premium drinks, speciality dining, tips and excursions are included. So when you are not drinking Champagne you could be swimming with dolphins, driving a Segway to a secluded beach, viewing Mayan Ruins, taking a speed boat and snorkelling on reefs & it is all included ~ WOW! Superb value this is my very favourite cruise line I cannot pick fault, it is worth every penny. River cruising, can be confusing as to what is offered for the ultimate experience APT offer a superb experience, drinks, gratuities, excursions along with superb food and at least one evening of your chef preparing a meal before your very eyes. For non flyers take a look at our Tulips cruise or flights are always available from Humberside. Warner’s leisure hotels, back on dry land they offer a selection of quality hotels most in stunning locations in historic houses. In a One-of-a-Kind Skating Spectacular Featuring More Than 60 Disney Characters Including the Stars of Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their friends from Disney’s Mulan, The Lion King and Pinocchio, and Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Toy Story, take to the ice for a grand celebration in Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic. The show comes to Sheffield for eleven performances from Wednesday 5th – Sunday 9th November and tickets are on general sale. memories of Disney to life on ice. Scenic Designer David Potts and Lighting Designer LeRoy Bennett create the mood and settings that showcase extraordinary Disney moments. Outfitting this cast of more than 60 characters was the challenge facing Costume Designer Scott Lane. His dazzling designs range from Mickey’s Marching Band, to the “It’s a Small World” dolls, to the stars of Mulan and Finding Nemo. The bright colors and minimal structure in the Nemo costumes allow the characters to move freely in order to mimic the natural movement in water. Renowned designer Bob Mackie also lends his talents to a red sequined evening gown worn by Minnie. Scenic Designer David Potts, who has worked on numerous Broadway productions, creates a theatrical atmosphere on ice. Skaters weave around and enliven the “It’s a Small World” sequence amidst sparkling floats that turn into a radiant light parade; a blanket of snow and an avalanche fall as Mulan battles the Huns; and a giant present is opened to reveal Buzz Lightyear as he’s first introduced to that favorite toy cowboy, Woody and his pal Jessie. Mickey Mouse and all his pals at Disney On Ice have the most performances and customers of any touring show at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield bringing shows every year since the building opened - that’s over 270 performances seen by over 1.3 million customers.

With Mickey and Minnie leading the fun, audiences enjoy breathtaking production numbers choreographed by Emmy Award®-winner Sarah Kawahara. Kawahara previously worked with Michelle Kwan and choreographed the skating segment for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Complementing Kawahara’s fabulous skate sequences are the memorable tunes compiled by music directors Art Kempel and Stan Beard that bring the wonderful

5 Tips From the Laboratory of Professor O’Google! Gmail is popular for a reason. Compared to other email providers, it has a wealth of features that make it stand out as being one of the most user friendly applications out there. If the standard features that Gmail users already get to enjoy completely free are not enough for you, then Gmail Labs expands the possibilities still further – providing everything you could possibly be looking for and probably more besides! This list of experimental features is made available on an optional basis so that the good folks at Gmail can test them out and get user feedback.

24

Not familiar with Gmail Labs? Well, you can add countless features to your email experience by selecting the Labs tab in Settings. There are all kinds of goodies available in Gmail labs. The list is endless, which is why we felt the need to point out 5 Gmail Labs that everyone can benefit from in terms of increasing their email productivity. 1. Calendar Preview
Instead of having to open a whole separate tab to know what you have planned out for the day, you can simply add a Calendar Preview to your Gmail. It might not be near as functional as the actual Google Calendar webpage, but it’s great for letting you know at mere glance whether you’re free for a quick bite to eat with an old friend. 2. Docs Preview
Users of Google Docs and Gmail may find it useful to have a small preview of a handful of their most recently accessed docs within their email client. With Docs Preview, you can say goodbye to browsing through your cluttered Google Drive to find documents you frequently use.

4. Google Maps Preview
Wouldn’t it be convenient if every time you were sent an address through email, you’d be able to see it on a small map without having to open up a web-based map separately? Gmail Labs has just the solution for you. Now you’ll know exactly where your appointments are right out of the comfort of your inbox. 5. Undo Send
Regret is a terrible feeling, and it’s about time email clients begin to realize it. Every regular email user has, at some point in their lives, been in a situation where they send an email – only to realize an embarrassing typo; or even worse, that they have sent it to the wrong person. Undo Send lets you take back harsh words you didn’t mean – by allowing time to correct your mistakes for a precious few seconds right after you have hit the Send button! by Steve Elliott of Thrifty Websites

3. Right-side Chat
The inbuilt Gmail chat function can be frustrating since it is fit right into the middle of the cluttered left hand menu. Wouldn’t it be great if you could move the chat feature to a bar on the right of screen? With Gmail Labs, you can. Please mention BEVERLEYMAG when responding to our advertisers. Thank you.

EAST RIDING THEATRE GETTING CLOSER TO OPENING ITS DOORS. Beverley will soon be playing host to some of the country’s top performers as East Riding Theatre gets closer to opening its doors. The Grade II listed Chapel, is currently undergoing building works to transform the venue into a theatre with the capacity to seat an audience of 200 people. The venue will be handed back to East Riding Theatre in

28

September. There is still a huge amount of work to undertake, in the form of decorating, plumbing, installing the theatre seats and building the stage before the building can operate this December. We currently have a team of 80 volunteers who are busily working away over the next three months to get the theatre ready for its opening production of A Christmas Carol adapted by Vincent Regan, which runs from 17 December 2014 until 3 January 2015. ERT has a committed Board, again all volunteers, comprising of professional theatre-makers and business experts along with Dame Judi Dench who has agreed to be ERT’s Patron and is very much

behind the project saying: “I am very much looking forward to the opening production of A Christmas Carol this December. As the theatre is still seeking sponsors at this point, the support of the public is vital in enabling ERT to present a world-class artistic programme and deliver innovative creative learning projects both locally and nationally, which will inevitably attract visitors from all over the country to the East Riding. As a Yorkshire born actress I am proud to be patron

of this exciting new theatre and urge you to support it in any way you can.” The project is extremely community based. Without any public funding, the theatre is dependent on the support of the community through local businesses and individual sponsors. We have already benefited from donations of building materials, work in kind and financial contributions. ERT is actively seeking more volunteers and corporate sponsorship - if you know of anyone or are a local business that might be interested in getting involved please contact Sue Kirkman, ERT’s Theatre Director at eastridingtheatre@gmail.com. For further information on all the forthcoming productions at ERT and to book tickets online visit www.eastridingtheatre.co.uk to get your tickets to a little piece of history as we open our doors for the very first time. ERT looks forward to welcoming everyone through the doors this December to East Yorkshire’s newest theatre.

VAT and Prompt Payment Discounts

Businesses which currently offer prompt payment discounts (PPD) to their customers need to be aware that there are some changes ahead to the rules. Currently under UK law VAT is payable on the net amount after deducting the discount, whether or not the customer takes advantage of the PPD and pays promptly. For example if you sell some goods for £1,000 plus VAT and offer 5% discount if the customer pays within 10 days then VAT is charged at 20% on £950 being £190, rather than 20% of £1,000 which is £200. Even if the customer takes 30 days to pay and therefore does not qualify for the PPD, the amount due will be £1,190. This rule regarding PPD is in the process of being changed and from 1 April 2015 VAT will be due on the amount the customer actually pays. So using the above example if the customer fails to take advantage of the PPD he would need to pay the full £1,000 plus VAT of £200.

34

is taken up. So using the same example if the customer takes up the discount then the credit note would be for £50 plus £10 VAT. Apparently PPD have been widely used by suppliers of telecommunications and broadcasting services and so the use of PPD to reduce VAT due has already been blocked in those sectors from 1 May 2014. This applies where the customer cannot recover the VAT charged. If your business currently offers PPD you may need to change your invoicing procedures from 1 April 2015 and the Government are going to consult on the implementation of the change.

The business making the supply will have to issue a credit note to account for the PPD where this

Pension Scams! Beware!

HMRC and the Pensions Regulator (TPR) are publicising the availability of revised leaflets which warn people of the consequences of pension liberation scams. HMRC are advising that individuals with pension savings continue to be targeted by unscrupulous companies encouraging them to access their pension savings early. Options are given for personal loans, cash incentives and one-off pension investments to encourage people to invest in these pension scams. Pension savers involved in these pension liberation scams face significant tax consequences. HMRC has worked closely with TPR on publishing a revised set of leaflets highlighting the serious downsides of pension scams. The leaflets provide guidance on what trustees and scheme members can do to reduce the risk of becoming involved in these scams, and the tax impact of releasing pension funds early using these types of arrangements. FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

BACK TO SCHOOL!

What already?!! Where did the 6 weeks go? They always loom up in front of us, endlessly stretching before us as we wonder how we’re going to manage the holidays - and then, before we know it, we’re looking over our shoulders wondering where the summer went. Now, we can just go back to juggling work, home and after-school activities instead of feeling guilty about enrolling the children in summer activities! But while parenting may feel like we’ve got too many balls in the air all at once, I don’t think there’s a single one of us who doesn’t love it. There’s just something wonderful about having children, the things they do that make 38 you laugh and the things they say that are often so profound! And we have to remember all of those when they drive us crazy!

LOOM CRAZY!

Talking of being crazy, it seems to me that loom bands came out of nowhere and I can’t see the craze dying out anytime soon. I had never heard of them and then, just a month or so before the summer holidays, everyone suddenly became obsessed by them. Even the Royals and other celebrities are getting in on the act. Prince William and Kate have been spotted wearing them, as have the likes of David Beckham and the One Direction lads. I, of course, have my own collection courtesy of my children – in a variety of colours to match whatever I happen to be wearing! I think they’re pretty great, don’t you? They’re so creative and it’s a complete distraction from “screen” time, except, of course, when they watch youtube videos to find out how to perfect new designs! Well, we can’t do without technology entirely, can we?!!
