Graham Stuart MP:

Improving health services across our community

There is nothing more important to me than making sure that residents across Beverley and Holderness are healthy and happy. Whether this is achieved through fighting to save our MIUs, lobbying for better NHS dental care, or stepping up my defibrillator campaign, I am doing my utmost to ensure that our community has the public health services it needs. This month I have increased the pressure on NHS England over local dentistry. I have spoken

with Moira Dumma, Director of Commissioning Operations for Yorkshire and the Humber at NHS England, to convey residents’ concerns about long waiting lists and a lack of available NHS dentists. Earlier this year, I discovered that there was not a single practice in Beverley taking on new NHS patients, which is not acceptable. I therefore welcome Ms Dumma’s confirmation that NHS England will be reviewing their use of resources across the East Riding, and that this review should be completed by the end of 2017. A busy month has also seen me step up my campaign to improve the number and awareness of Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPADs) across Beverley and Holderness. I want our area to have the best coverage of CPADs in the UK and the highest number of residents trained in basic life-saving skills. It was therefore fantastic to see a range of local organisations, from Yorkshire Ambulance Service to

local charities N.U.R.S.E. and the HEY Smile Foundation supporting this ambition at my recent conference at the Tickton Grange Hotel. Since the conference, we have already started work on identifying local areas that need better CPAD coverage and how to maximise residents’ awareness too. As ever, it was great to hear from residents at my regular street surgeries, where I always

Top Ten 1 Interior Trends of 2017

fresh and modern, and a strong trend on its own.

4 Standout Range Hoods

Hardworking chef-grade appliances have reigned supreme for years, but lately there is a shift towards something more decorative. When a standout stove is center stage in a kitchen, it demands a range hood with equal star billing. This cobalt version trimmed in copper doesn’t disappoint.

Here our Interior Design advisor Gaynor Preston Routledge looks at the top design trends of this year..

4

1 Going Grey

Grey kitchens (everything from a pale dove grey to gutsier slate) have been popping up with more frequency. It’s not going to edge white out of the top spot anytime soon, but grey adds a distinctiveness and character to kitchens that’s still quiet, and works with stainless appliances and chrome fixtures.

2

2 Pretty Lanterns

Functional pendants such as schoolhouse or globe lights are easy to clean and suit the industrial trend that’s been gaining momentum. But there’s something to be said about a jewel-like fixture, such as these faceted lanterns, that make a kitchen feel special.

3 Open Shelving On Graphic Tile

Fully tiled walls in graphic patterns are a huge trend, so if you commit to this eye-catching look, you don’t want to cover it with uppers. Open shelving is

9 Built-In Bars

If frequent entertaining is totally within your wheelhouse, a fullservice bar in the kitchen makes mixology second nature. Add a dynamic wallpaper, such as this pretty ikat, along with a practical mix of open and closed storage, and an array of eye-catching glassware.

9

10 Jointed Pendants

Pendants, especially in a matte black finish, offer a hit of hip Brooklyn chic to kitchens, and they are adjustable. This version is a bold punctuation mark that doesn’t get lost against a graphic tile wall.

7 Dramatic Pantries

Pantries are attractive additions to potential homebuyers, so try turning a broom closet or nook into a bespoke pantry to showcase everyday essentials. Amp it up by painting the interior in a contrasting color, or choosing a bold tile or patterned wallpaper for the back wall.

8 Sculpted Islands

Treat the island like the gem it is by faceting the contours. Designer Nam Dang-Mitchell clad the entire outer face of this kitchen island in Calacatta Gold marble, and tilted the gables. We wanted it to be monolithic, like it was carved from a block of marble, she says.

PROPERTY COLUMN Why use your Fully Managed Service? Whilst in the office the someone asked, ‘Sales I know about and why I should use an Estate Agent, but why use your Fully Managed Service? Based on experience the major reason why Landlords use the Fully Managed service is to oversee the property investment and to reduce stress of managing the property. The agent becomes the first point of call for the tenant to report possible repairs and neighbour disputes etc. Another important issue is the management of rent payments. The Fully Managed service also has regular inspections and identifies tenancy breaches, identification and resolving maintenance requirements using local qualified contractors for maintenance. There are several legal changes which will have an impact on the tenancy. Over the past few years these have included gas safety legislation, smoke alarms. Right to Rent legislation with EPC requirements due 2018, with others due. Using a Fully Managed service the agent will be able to keep you informed of changes and how these impacts the tenancy. For example, recently we reviewed EPC information and informed the landlords and presented a course of action to limit the potential for breach of these regulations. Apart from these 2 main areas, other benefits include advice and managing planned improvements to maintain the property and monitoring and advising on possible rents. In conclusion there are several benefits of using a Fully Managed service, the most common reasons include reducing the stress of managing your property plus ensuring the tenancy complies with the changing legal requirements. I hope this has giving you an understanding of why you should use a good Fully Managed service. Until next month take care. Michael Allison, Director of Martin & Co (Beverley)

ARENACROSS TOUR 2018 FlyDSA ARENA in Sheffield

SATURDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2018 The Arenacross Tour is set to explode into 2018 with a bigger and better format for its seven-round actionpacked UK indoor Motocross race series and Freestyle extravaganza - and the penultimate leg of the Tour will take in the FlyDSA Arena on Saturday the 10th of February.

of South Yorkshire’s own stars of the future – Harvey Shaw and Kian Knowles - were in the racing mix and, as well as making their family and friends proud of their on-track prowess, they worked hard to help promote the AX series with a spot of television and radio work.

AX is high-octane entertainment at its very best. It throws together an intoxicating mix of world-class indoor Motocross racing, highflying Freestyle Motocross and a show to rival any music festival. In its five-year history, it has seen thousands of fans streaming through its doors every year.

2018 promises to again deliver an electrifying Tour. A crammed agenda will cater for mini-racing gladiators from the age of seven – who manage to fit in school and homework around the gruelling AX races - right through to the most talented line-up of Arenacross Pro racers ever to place a wheel on UK soil.

Enthusiastic fans packed out The FlyDSA Arena, when the 2017 Tour was in town earlier this year. They enjoyed a night of tense race action, high-air FMX antics, lights, lasers and music. Expectations were at an all-time high, as there were just 12 points separating the first and sixth placed Pro riders and there were two Brits in the mix. The evening didn’t disappoint, and the ultra-close racing kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. A couple

Away from the racing line, the Freestyle MX boys never fail to impress with their electrifying, high-air whips and flips which keep the audience hollering for more. In its five-year stint, the UK Arenacross series has been revered for showcasing FMX at its very best and that’s why the big-hitters of the sport, the FMX royalty, have made

the series a must-do affair and worked it into their busy schedules. When it comes to AX; X-Games gold medallists and Nitro Circus superstars abound with Spaniard Edgar Torronteras and the UK’s very own Jamie Squibb and the Bolddog Team at the fore, together with arguably the most spectacular double-flipper in the world, 6’ 4” Czech uber-cool superman, Petr Pilat.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet has approved free parking for the four weekends in December running up to Christmas. The popular scheme, which the council has run for the past eight years, will apply to all council-run on-street and off-street car parks.

Commenting on the growth and popularity of Arenacross, ArenaSports Live (the company behind AX) boss Matt Bates said; “I believe we have a massive future! As well as ramping up the AX experience for our UK based fans, we’re extending into Europe next year and I’m set on making sure we develop both the riders’ rewards, team support and take the entertainment of AX to a whole new level.” Be a part of the action and get your tickets NOW! Tickets priced from £30.24 Adults & from £17.92 Children (aged 12 & under) including booking fee are available online at www. flydsaarena.co.uk by phone on 0114 256 56 56 or in person at the Arena Box Office.

Council approves an eighth year of free Christmas parking

Pay and display machines in these locations will be clearly marked to let shoppers know there is no charge for the weekends of 2-3, 9-10, 16-17 and 23-24 December, from 8am on Saturday until 8am on Monday.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Thanks to the council’s strong financial management, free parking in the run up to Christmas will again be offered in the East Riding. “This scheme provides real and tangible benefits for the local economy by providing a timely boost at what is an important time of the year for traders. It also helps our residents and visitors to the area who are preparing for the festive season.” Whilst parking charges are suspended, motorists are advised that normal parking rules still apply, such as those around disabled parking bays, maximum stays and controlled parking zones (CPZ).

Figure it out.

I’ve been accused of being both a deep thinker and a airhead with entirely too much time on my hands. Either way, I do spend a lot of time asking the age old question... WHY? l Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead? l Why do banks charge a fee on ‘insufficient funds’ when they already know there’s not enough money? l Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars but they have to check when you say the paint is still wet? l Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? l Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a gun at him? l Whose idea was it to put an ‘S’ in the word ‘lisp’?

WHY?

l If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? l Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white? l Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? l Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialised? l Why do people keep running over a piece of string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it back down to give the vacuum one more chance? l Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? l How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? l When we’re in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping trolley then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, ‘It’s all right?’ Well, it isn’t all right, so why don’t we say, ‘That really hurt. Why don’t you watch where you’re going?’ l Why is it that whenever you try to catch something that’s falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? l In winter, why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? l How come you never hear father-in-law jokes? l And finally...How do thermos flasks know how to keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot? Those are the questions..........I’m still looking for the answers BeverleyMag November 2017

Owners Mohammed and Kahled (Maa’s Chef), are delighted how the business has grown in the past twelve months. It is no surprise that Maa Indian Restaurant has become so popular with Beverley residents and people from the greater East Yorkshire area. Couple these ingredients together with the colourful and aromatic array of imported Indian spices that they use in their recipes and you will gain an understanding

Roy Woodcock’s

Spumante, which is said to boast “bright aromas of pear and white peach”, has gone on sale for £7.99. The retailer claims that because the fizz is low in sulphites, imbibers are less likely to get a hangover from it.

I’m dreaming of a blue Christmas...

“We’ve all had that shocking wine hangover. This is sometimes attributed to the sulphite preservatives used in wine to keep them fresher for longer. Generally, organic wine producers use a lower level of sulphites in the production process, which means they are less likely to contribute to hangovers,” said a spokesman for Lidl.

World of Wine

Elvis Presley may have been ahead of his time by 60 years when he released “Blue Christmas” in 1957, for the rather startling news of late has concerned blue fizz being produced in time for the festive season. This most unlikely of trends has emerged with the launch of a sparkling wine called Eden. It’s made from Chardonnay grapes from Provence and is medium sweet with 38g/l of sugar added. Selling for £45 a bottle, it is not cheap but follows on from other blue sparklers launched earlier this year. In May, Italian company Saracini Wines introduced Blumond, a seven per cent by alcohol “wine” made from a blend of Prosecco, blue curaçao and peach while in August English entrepreneur Chris

Arbery launched a blue “Cava” in the UK called Skyfall. Described as fresh and crisp, Skyfall is made in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia in Barcelona using only natural ingredients, combining four grapes: Macabeu, Parellada, Xarello and Chardonnay. Each bottle is aged for three years, turned by hand, with a blend of natural flower and fruit extracts added towards the end of the production process to create the turquoise hue. Labelled by hand, it has an ABV of 12 per cent. Like Eden, this blue fizz doesn’t come cheap and is currently selling for 39.99 a bottle on the Skyfall website (www.skyfalluk.co.uk) And should you want to try Eden for your very own blue Christmas then that, too, can be bought online via www.sparklingeden.com Me? I think I’ll stick to all things traditional. So, I won’t be investing, either, in what Lidl describes as a “hangoverfree” Prosecco launched last month. Their Organic Prosecco

Meanwhile, Aldi has announced that it will expand its alcohol range this month, stocking a chocolateflavoured dessert wine with notes of “figs, toffee and caramel” in time for Christmas. The Rubis chocolate non-vintage wine uses a base of fortified Tempranillo, more commonly found in Rioja, and is infused with chocolate essence. It can be served at either room temperature or chilled over ice, according to the winemaker’s website. The wine, which has flavours of “raisins, figs, dates, toffee and caramel,” has proved popular with industry leaders. It won the Silver award in 2015’s International Wine and Spirits Competition and took the IWSC’s Silver award again last year. The fortified wine, which has a

deep ruby colour, has notes of “mocha with a hint of freshly ground coffee beans, plus overtones of red fruit and cream,” according to the IWSC. “Flavours of raspberry and cherry come forth on the mid palate, giving way to notes of creamy milk chocolate. Climaxing with a lingering a luxurious and silky finish.” The unique Tempranillo has received positive reviews from retailers. The Whiskey Exchange describes the drink as “a very offthe-wall alternative to Port”. While Rubis’ dessert wine is priced at around £13 online, Aldi will sell the bottles for £9.99. The company said the drink “would make the perfect end to a festive feast”. * As we approac Christmas you might like to try this recipe for mulled wine. Most recipes are variations on a theme but this one calls for: Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage or Carménère would work well), 60g/2oz demerara sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, grated nutmeg, an orange halved, dried bay leaf and 60ml/2fl oz of sloe or damson gin or port (optional). Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bay leaf and the spices. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter, and add more sugar to taste. Take off the heat and stir in the added alcohol if you are using it. Strain into heatproof glasses and serve at once.

EXPANDING FESTIVAL EXPANDS AGAIN! The region’s most eclectic music festival is on a roll ... having already announced that Stage4Beverley had responded to demand by adding an extra day for its 2018 festival, the organisers have done it again, with news that the event will now stretch over five days.

The festival will once again be based at Beverley’s East Riding Theatre, taking over the theatre from February 14th to the 18th, with a line-up bridging diverse musical genres, from folk to blues, jazz to classical, Americana to world music and more. Artistic director Chris Wade says she and her fellow directors have been overwhelmed by the levels of interest in the event, both from artists and the public. “We set out earlier this year to create a weekend event that would offer something different for Beverley and East Yorkshire at a time when people are looking for something to brighten up the dark, winter months.

featuring stories, songs and a musical created out of thin air! Ian McMillan is known nationally as a pundit on Newsnight Review, as English National Opera’s poet-inresidence and as the approachable and fanatical presenter of BBC Radio 3’s highly popular spoken word program The Verb. Having lived in Barnsley since his birth in 1956, McMillan has numerous claims to fame, including being poet-in-residence of Barnsley Football Club. Luke Carver Goss is a composer/ performer who writes for unusual and regular instrumental combinations. His music includes commissions for BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Cultural Olympiad, and for festivals and concerts up and down the UK.

“February’s festival was such a success that audiences and artists alike asked to do more, so I’m pleased to say that having earlier announced the 2018 festival would start on the Thursday night and run for four days, we’ve been offered an opportunity to present renowned poet, the “Bard of Barnsley”, Ian McMillan alongside Olympic composer Luke Carver Goss. It means we have added a fifth day to put on their show, which we expect to be a sell-out.” “Words, Music, Glee and Delight” featuring Ian McMillan and Luke Carver Goss (pictured bottom right) will now launch the festival on Wednesday February 14th 2018 promising a hilarious night of words, music and improvisation,

Other newly-added names to Stage4Beverley’s 2018 festival include Chris Difford, co-founder of Squeeze, who’s made a lasting contribution to English music with hits such as ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Up The Junction’, ‘Labelled With Love’, ‘Hourglass’ and ‘Tempted’. Chris will be appearing at East Riding Theatre on Saturday February 17th alongside Mercury Music Prize nominated Kathryn Williams. They will come together to perform some of their most well-known songs in a concert entitled “A Songwriters Union”.

winning composer of music for the hit stage show War Horse and the TV series Sharpe, in which he also acted.

“We’ll also be presenting a series of workshops and a light classical concert in the main auditorium on the Sunday morning,” said Ms Wade. “Early indications are the festival is going to prove even more popular in 2018.” Previous artists already announced for Stage4Beverley include Richard Digance, jazz diva Claire Martin (pictured left), the ever-popular band Holy Moly and The Crackers (pictured top), folk trio Granny’s Attic and bluegrass and folk act The Carrivick Sisters. A high spot is sure to be the appearance of John Tams and Barry Coope (above) on Thursday February 15th - John being the multi award-

Out & About

Are you ready for this year’s Beverley Festival of Christmas?

‘Tiny Treasures’ New sessions for Under 5’s at the Treasure House in Beverley

The historic market town of Beverley will be the place to celebrate the festive season as it prepares to host its annual Festival of Christmas on Sunday, 10 December.

In November, The Treasure House Museum and Beverley Art Gallery are launching sessions for children under 5 and their families. These will take place on three Thursday afternoons – 16, 23 and 30 November, from 1:30-2:30pm in the Education Room.

Each year, on the second Sunday in December, the centre of the town is transformed into a magical wonderland for Christmas shoppers with over 120 stalls selling all manner of Christmas gifts and locally produced food and drink. The festival takes place from 10am-4pm and will open with the Christmas Parade, which sets off from Wednesday Market to Saturday Market and will be led by

Santa with his sleigh and reindeer. There will be four traditional Victorian Christmas Markets nestled within Saturday Market, Wednesday Market, North Bar Within and Flemingate Shopping Centre. As well as stalls selling festive stocking fillers there will be a range of family entertainment including live music, dancing, carols and more. There will also be a lot of fun things for the kids to do, including face painting, traditional Victorian fairground rides, Santa’s grotto and pantomime performances. There’s even something extra for the grownups, with the Nordic tipi bar in Flemingate Shopping Centre. Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet

portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The Beverley Festival of Christmas is one of the East Riding’s most popular events and attracted around 60,000 visitors in 2016. “The Beverley Festival of Christmas has plenty to offer outside of the event too. The town has some impressive architecture, such as Beverley Minster and St Mary’s Church, and a wealth of restaurants and independent shops which are perfect for those last minute presents.” If you would like to find out more about the Beverley Festival of Christmas, visit www. beverleyfestivalofchristmas.co.uk

Each session links to a theme from the Museum or Art Gallery exhibits, and features a range of related activities, from water play to construction and painting to digging, plus the opportunity to make a craft to take home. The themes for these sessions are: 16 November – Shape & Colour Get messy with paint, sort different objects, match shapes together, and create a colourful picture 23 November – Building Explore construction, take part in role play, curl up with a book, and build a collage house 30 November – Archaeology Dig in different materials, use archaeological tools, put the skeleton puzzle together, and design a coin. The ‘Tiny Treasures’ sessions are free, and there is no need to book on – just turn up and have fun! For more information, visit www.museums.eastriding.gov.uk or call 01482 932780.

Sheltered housing consultation is extended East Riding of Yorkshire Council is extending its consultation on sheltered housing proposals and organising extra roadshows as a response to feedback so tenants have even more chance to have their say. The council is proposing a range of improvements to sheltered housing and associated services based on the feedback it received from residents in the first stage of a consultation process last year. The suggestions include providing a more tailored service for tenants based on their individual needs by replacing the role of wardens with two new types of support and contact which would offer a more comprehensive service. Currently, all sheltered housing tenants pay for a warden service whether they need it or not. The proposals would offer a fairer model, with tenants able to choose the level of support they want. The new support service would also

“We’ve listened to all the feedback so far and people have lots of questions about the proposals so we think it’s important to extend the deadline and make further effort to speak to tenants so they can have their say on how we improve sheltered housing and support services. “We held 20 drop-in sessions at sheltered housing schemes across the East Riding and we are now organising roadshows to visit more schemes so that we can hear from tenants who may not have taken part so far.” be available to the wider community rather than just sheltered housing tenants so it would enable more people to live independently in their own home for longer. It would also offer more 24/7 coverage to respond to emergency calls quicker. Other proposals include improvements to sheltered housing stock and initiatives to address issues of social isolation and loneliness. The second stage of the consultation was scheduled to end on 31 October but this has now been extended to 15 December in

response to feedback so tenants have even more time to have their say on the proposals. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and the environment at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We’ve had a good response to the consultation and offer a big thank you to everyone who has taken part. “However, we want to make sure we reach as many people as possible, face-to-face, to answer questions and to help them be part of the process.

Every sheltered housing property received a questionnaire and about 900 completed forms have been received by the council, which Cllr Fraser said was a good response rate of about 50% - but the council wants to make sure that every tenant has as much opportunity as possible to air their views. If any tenants would like more information about the proposals, or to request another consultation form, please email tenants.participation@ eastriding.gov.uk or telephone the tenants’ participation team on 01482 396301.

With over 20 years of experience, Ashley Phillips Ltd is a local, family-run financial advice firm, who pride themselves in providing a comprehensive financial planning service in an approachable and friendly manner. Having worked with a variety of clients, ranging from individuals to local government departments, we have a proven record of establishing lasting relationships, built on fairness and trust. Most of the banks have reduced the numbers of branch based advisers. There is a great need, and demand for face-to-face financial advice for the general public, so being based close to where the general public used to go for advice made sense. Health & Wellbeing

When should you see the doctor? Coughs, colds and feeling under the weather is common during autumn and winter, but some symptoms could be a sign of something more sinister. It’s OK to bring someone with you to a GP appointment for support. Public Health England’s ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign urges people to more aware of their body and the symptoms they are experiencing. Getting out of breath doing things you used to be able to do, or having a cough that has lasted for three weeks or more, could be a sign of lung disease, including lung cancer. Breathlessness can also be a sign of heart disease. Those experiencing these symptoms should book an appointment with their GP to get it checked out. Public Health England has created a list of 10 top tips to help you book your GP appointment today:

BeverleyMag November 2017

1. Pay attention to your body. Symptoms, and particularly those that persist, are your body’s way of telling you that something might be wrong 2. It’s understandable to be worried or embarrassed about some types of symptoms, but don’t let this stop you making a GP appointment. Your GP is trained to deal with whatever ailment is worrying you 3. Remember, you’re not wasting anyone’s time by getting your symptoms checked out. Seeing your doctor early could save your life as early detection can make it more treatable. 4. Be honest with the receptionist when you make your appointment. They are bound by confidentiality and are trained to recognise the importance of

your symptoms to give you an appropriate appointment. 5. Prepare for your appointment by writing a list about your symptoms: when they started, how often they occur and what makes them better or worse. Also write down any questions you want to ask your GP. 6. It’s ok to bring someone with you to a GP appointment for support. This can be a family member or friend. 7. During the appointment, the GP may ask you a lot of questions, but this is so they can determine your diagnosis. Also, don’t be afraid to ask your own questions if you don’t understand something. 8. Ask your doctor about what will happen next. There may be a follow-up appointment or referral

for tests. Ask what the tests are for and how or when you will get the results. 9. If your doctor recommends that you book follow up appointments, it’s very important make this with the receptionist and attend the appointments. It’s important to see your doctor again if your symptoms persist and are concerning you. 10. If a medical condition is diagnosed, ask about your treatment options. You can discuss with your doctor what will be best for you, any risk of side effects and how long the treatment will take. Inventing cabung. I did not set out to invent! What do you like most about Beverley? Everything you could want in a place to live, work and bring up a family, from the Westwood to the Minster, the Beck, Saturday Market, the shopping, bars and restaurants and fantastic schools that our children attended. If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? James Hunt, loved the way he raced in the 70’s, he enjoyed his life to the full, raced by the seat of his pants in an era when safety was not top of the list and I’m sure he would have some great stories and he liked champers. What is your favourite food? With so many restaurants to choose from, I enjoy an Indian meal, just love hot spicy food and a nice cool larger but also find it very easy to eat and relax at Carluccio’s When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see? 3 months ago, Baby Driver, great action film with fantastic soundtrack. What do you love most about your job? Meeting people, both jobs allow me to meet, talk and enjoy the company of people from all walks of life i.e. dealing with farmers in South Yorkshire and then meeting Prince Michael of Kent, Tiff Needell and Jodie Kidd when we launched cabung at the London Motor Show. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time? I enjoy both jobs and have no intention of retiring although may have longer weekends. I look forward to being able to spend more time with family, friends and take the opportunity to do more traveling. www.cabung.com

Gardening

November Gardening November is the time to tidy up the garden and start preparing for winter. Make your own leaf mould for free

out of the wind against the house wall. You can also bubblewrap pots to protect against frost. If you hate the sight of this cover the wrap with a layer of hessian (perhaps saved from an old potato sack) and tie in place with string.

Rake up leaves and store in a simple leaf bin which you can make from chicken wire. Failing that heap them into black bin bags then prick holes in these with a fork to let in air and store out of sight. Leaves can take a year or two to properly break down before they can be used as a top dressing or mulch.

Plant up some winter pots with winter pansies which will keep going till spring.

Look after your lawn

Clear away slimy rotting foliage but leave other stems standing to provide winter interest and somewhere for overwintering insects.

Rake up leaves and tidy edges before winter. You can also use a rake to scarify the grass to remove as much thatch and moss as possible. This will help with drainage as well as improve the grass by bringing light and air to the roots. Come spring your lawn will thank you.

Containers

Remove saucers to avoid pots sitting in freezing water which can lead to rot. Stand pots on clay feet to improve drainage. You can buy these from garden centres or save money by using broken tiles or similar to raise the base off the pots off the ground. Protect vulnerable containers and plants from the worst weather by putting them in the warmest spot

Plant tulips.

Borders

If roses look as though they might be rocked by strong winds prune out the whippy stems.

Use a soft rake to clear leaves that have fallen on the soil. These can be added to the leaf bin as long as they are healthy. Congested clumps of perennials can be lifted and divided now or in the spring. If doing this now use two forks, placed back to back, to prize the clump apart and divide it into several pieces ensuring each has a healthy area of root from which to regrow. If the clumps are really tough you can saw them apart using a saw or old bread knife. You can also plant tulips in borders,

marking where you have planted so you don’t dig them up in a fit of New Year enthusiasm. Once dahlias have been ruined by frost cut down stems to about five inches above grown and either lift and store the tubers over winter or mound them over with straw or mulch to protect them from frost.

Make your autumn garden more colourful These fixes for dull and bare patches in the garden will give you a stunning autumn garden. Fiery foliage from a Japanese maple or acer can really perk up an autumn garden If you have not planted it with bulbs, perennials or shrubs prized for their late season foliage or berries, the autumn garden can be a complete

letdown after the excesses of summer. However, it is possible to create a head-turning spectacle, or at least adding a bit more interest, by plugging some gaps in your borders with plants. Head to your local garden centre or nursery and you will find plenty of specimens that will quickly establish when planted in the warm, moist soil. Not only will these plants light up your space for the next few weeks, but they will continue to give you a fantastic display of autumn colour for many years to come.

Fiery foliage

Many trees and shrubs are spectacular in autumn and now is the best time to buy them as you can see exactly what they look like. Among the best for fiery foliage are graceful Japanese maples or acers. This large tribe includes Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Seiryu’, whose bright green leaves change to orange-yellow with splashes of red, blazing red Acer palmatum ‘Ôsakazuki’ and A.palmatum ‘Shindeshôjô’ – its pale green foliage

Gardening of pinkish berries. Another worth checking out is S. ‘Joseph Rock’ (left), its berries are a sunny yellow. All of the trees I have mentioned are ideal in a small garden and as a bonus, have great autumn foliage.

in well drained soil and give them a sunny spot. Dainty cyclamen can be planted at the front of beds, in grass or under trees - many have specific requirements, but C.hederifolium is fairly easy going and simple to grow.

Crab apples are more exuberant than sorbus. Many of these trees have large, shiny fruit that hang in bunches like clusters of Carmen Miranda-style earrings. Malus ‘John Downie’ has orangey red fruit, M. ‘Butterball’, golden yellow crab apples, and Malus pumila ‘Cowichan’ is smothered with bright red fruit.

Late-flowering perennials

Bulbs in flower

Bulbous plants, such as nerines and schizostylis, are perfect for filling a few gaps in borders and will keep going well into November – plant

turns vivid orange. Slow growing, these trees are perfect in tiny gardens and can even be grown in large containers. Other trees to consider include Amelanchier lamarkii, for its blazing orange and red oval leaves, and Cercidiphyllum japonicum. Known as katsura tree, its glowing yellow foliage fills the garden air with a candy floss scent.

Although most of us want our garden to look at its best over summer, it is worth planting a few perennials to keep the show going on for longer.Japanese anemones, Verbena bonariensis, cimicifuga, several varieties of rudbeckia and some sanguisorba are still looking good. When buying, choose plants that still have flowers to come, rather than those whose blooms are starting to fade. This way you will have plenty of colour to look forward to.

Best berries

Berries hang pendulously from branches of trees in autumn and will continue to provide colour well into winter, so long as the birds do not take them all first. Perhaps the classiest berry bearing trees are sorbus. There are many to choose from; Sorbus hupehensis has white berries blushed with pink, while Sorbus vilmorinii produces clusters

Gardening

Give your garden shed a winter tidy Give some TLC to your shed, pots and tools in preparation for the year ahead. If your garden shed is anything like mine, it descends into chaos as a busy spring turns into a frantic summer followed by an equally mad autumn. Winter is the time to have a grand sort-out followed by a trip to the local tip. That will give you the space to restock your twine, labels, compost, seed trays and pens while the garden centres are groaning with garden sundries. Once reorganised, you’ll be more than ready for the year ahead. Make sure you’ve got plenty of time, and arm yourself with lots of large black plastic sacks, damp cleaning cloths, a dustpan and brush and the vacuum cleaner (with extension lead if necessary).

BeverleyMag November 2017

to make the shed door more secure – they have very little of the metal hoop exposed, which makes them much less vulnerable to someone wielding a pair of bolt cutters. l If your shed has a window, make it harder for thieves to find out what’s inside by obscuring it – cover it on the inside with bubblewrap, horticultural fleece or even an old net curtain. Fit laminated glass in the window – it’s harder to break – or fit security mesh across the outside.

Get your pots in order Start with the seed trays and throw anything out that’s damaged. Those spared will need a brush out and wipe, then they can be stacked neatly, but only keep a realistic number. Next, examine your plastic pots and select the most useful sizes such as 9cm round ones (for potting up cuttings) and larger ones for potting up perennials. Keep a few deep pots, ideal for sowing sweet peas, then recycle the rest (your local garden centre may have a recycling scheme if your council does not). Check your terracotta pots and discard any broken ones, saving a few shards if you use them for drainage. If the weather is mild, lay the good ones upside down on the lawn and allow the rain to clean them for you. Don’t let them get frosted in severe cold snaps, though.

Then vacuum the whole interior of your shed (to prevent bugs and slugs from climbing straight back inside your cleaned pots) and restack everything neatly. Pots can lie on their sides and trays can be stacked on newly swept shelves.

Improve your garden shed security Tips for keeping your garden shed secure from intruders l Before you start looking at locks and alarms for your garden shed, inspect the building itself. Is the roof in good shape, for example? Thieves have been known to lift off a flimsy roof to get at tools inside. l Make sure the shed door is in good condition – there’s no point strengthening hinges and fitting padlocks if it’s easy enough to kick in a rotting door panel. l Use clutch-head screws or coach screws on the shed door hinges and on the hasp and latch – these types of screws can’t be easily unscrewed. Fit two padlocks on the door: one about a third of the way down from the top, the other a similar distance from the bottom of the door. l Choose closed-shackle padlocks

Tips for keeping tools and equipment in your shed secure l If someone does manage to get into the shed, make it hard for them to carry off equipment such as lawnmowers and chainsaws. Use heavy-duty chain and a padlock to link items together: a lawnmower, a heavy barbecue and a bundle of garden chairs chained together will be awkward to drag away. l Does your garden shed have a concrete base? You could install anchor bolts and use a chain and padlock to secure equipment stored in your shed. l Always put away tools, equipment and bikes – anything of any value – when you aren’t using them. Be aware that burglars may find some garden tools handy for breaking into the house. l Mark equipment with your postcode – use a UV pen, paint the details on or scratch them onto metal handles. l In summer it can be a pain to have to put garden furniture away every night, check whether your insurance policy covers items left out.

The Last Word

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN Yes it’s not long now and, unlike last year, I haven’t started my Christmas shopping yet. I must do that soon otherwise the festive season will be upon me and I will be making a mad dash around the shops – or I may have more luck getting organised with internet shopping because I can do that after hours! I need a list! Lists make everything better! I still plan to write my Christmas cards this month though and stamp them up ready to post in December. It’s hard to believe it’s this time of year already. And remember that the most important thing is to make time for your children, family, friends and loved ones. At the end of the day, they are all that matter. As Jesse Jackson once said: “Your children need your presence more than your presents.”

PADDINGTON 2 AT LAST! I can’t wait to see the next instalment of Paddington at the cinema. It’s been a long time coming and it’s being released on 10th November. It’s all the same cast plus Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson (MadEye Moody from the Harry Potter films). You just know it’s going to be brilliant! So don’t forget your cinema snacks. Remember: “A wise bear always keeps a marmalade sandwich in his hat in case of emergency.”

QUOTES TO CONSIDER IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS “The most important things in life aren’t things.” ~ Anthony J. D’Angelo “Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” – Charles M. Schulz (creator of Charlie Brown)
