A Busy Summer If a week is a long time in politics, a month can be an age – and so it has proved during the summer of 2016. In my last column, I addressed the outcome of the EU referendum and David Cameron’s resignation. At the time, the expectation was that we would currently be in the midst of a leadership election to select the next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister. Following the withdrawal of Andrea Leadsom from the leadership race, events moved on again very swiftly, and I am delighted that Theresa May is now in office in Downing Street. I voted for her in both rounds of voting among MPs in July because I am convinced that she has the qualities, the experience and the vision to lead our country through the years ahead. As Home Secretary, Mrs May (pictured right) held perhaps the most difficult role in Government for six years and did so with aplomb. Whether deporting Abu Qatada, taking on the Police Federation, bringing down crime or helping to expose and correct the historical injustices of Hillsborough or the murder of Stephen Lawrence, she demonstrated courage, tenacity, decency and purpose. She works phenomenally hard, is part of no clique, answers to no interest group and has earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues. In her speech in Downing Street upon assuming office, the Prime Minister identified a number of the most significant challenges the new Government will face – including not only negotiating

the right deal for Britain as we leave the EU, but also keeping the United Kingdom intact and delivering social justice. She will have my full support in her work. As new ministers settle into their Departments, I am working hard to press them for action on the causes I have been campaigning for – notably fair school funding, a better deal for rural local authorities and action to address climate change and mitigate flood risk. I want to wish all readers a very happy summer. The Property Column

Home Sweet Home

Recently I had a conversation about young adults leaving home and will they be able to return to a place of their own in Beverley? This made me think, I can remember in the 1980’s where getting a place of your own meant getting on the housing ladder. Buying a house at almost any cost was everything. But since the late 1990’s data shows this view has changed. With an attitude more akin to the European model where people choose to rent in their 20’s and 30’s. This gives freedom to move around and not to be tied to a property aiding their career development. Also as renters they don’t have to deal with the

financial responsibility of housing emergencies, e.g. fixing the boiler. As a result of these changes there are potentially more renters. This is supported by a recent Martin & Co’s market intelligence showing a shift towards a greater private rented sector in the UK. What does this mean for those wishing to live in Beverley? Well there are currently several thousand private rental properties, all providing opportunities for people to live in the area. However, given that there is growing demand and limited expansion in supply this means that rental values increase. So in conclusion young adults should be able to return to Beverley to live and work. Until next month take care.

Michael Allison, Director of Martin & Co (Beverley)

Pricing Property to Sell

As we are all aware, the property market has faced much uncertain over the past couple of years. We are no longer in a period where any house on the market, at practically any price, will almost certainly sell. This is why it is vital that each property on the market is priced realistically and accurately. This does not mean selling a property at an undervalued price it simply means that if you wish to sell your house then it must be priced correctly. Any unprofessional agent can quote you high valuations and misguided figures, but achieving the sale in this climate is another matter altogether. When selling your house it is imperative that the final valuation figure that you receive is based on experience and knowledge of the area by highly trained local agents. A useful exercise would be to ask for the values of comparable properties, just so you can get some realistic sale values in your head. The last thing that anyone wants is your property for sale sitting and stagnating on the market for months with little interest because an agent has overinflated its value just to get you on board.

8

Selling your home is equally as stressful as purchasing a new property so ensure that you do all you can to value your property at its correct price.

Seasonal change influences house sales.

As with many different markets, seasonal change greatly influences the selling of property. For instance, Spring is a good time to sell your house as this is the time that many people use to purchase so they can get their children into new schools by September. If you wish to capture these Spring home movers, then you should be looking to put your house on the market by the end of February ready for an active period close to May and June. The advantages of a Spring sale means that you have longer days to fill up your home with as many viewings as possible, with more natural light and in bloom gardens added advantages. Another season ideal for selling your property is Autumn. Putting your house on the market in early September means you will appeal to buyers hoping to move in before the Christmas period. However, beware as the Autumn selling window is short and the best prospect for selling your home would be in the months of September and October as these offer enough time for the sale to complete before Christmas. If you still end up searching for a buyer for your property after the Autumn selling window then they will usually be in a stronger position, as post Christmas signals a traditional market slowdown. In spite of all these factors it ultimately comes down to you when selling your home. If you are motivated and prepared to market your house correctly then selling your property becomes a much easier task. In the end, you are the determining factor.

Wedded Bliss Weddings! A virger attends loads of them, and they are all special. To be married at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, where I virged many a bridal couple, a bride or groom or one of their parents needs to have a Knighthood, and would then be eligible to be married in the Chapel of the Order of the British Empire, which is located in the crypt. When Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married in the nave in 1981, it was the first (and only) Royal Wedding to take place at St Paul’s since Henry VII’s oldest son, Prince Arthur, married Catherine of Aragon, before dying and leaving her to his younger brother! That event, of course, pre-dated the present building. We, too, are in the midst of Wedding Season here at Beverley Minster. To be married within the stunning surround of the Mnster requires no OBE or royal blood, but rather parishioner status, or a Qualifying Connection. A QC might include having been baptised here, or if a parent or grandparent were married here. The full list of QCs can be found at www.yourchurchwedding.org which is the official Church of

England website full of information for the special day. Weddings at Beverley Minster are very special. Of course there is the spectacular architecture surrounding the event, the majesty of the organ music filling the space, the option of the Minster Choir to regale the couple and guests with song, beautiful floral arrangements, and the service itself, with its timeless simplicity. Who does not well up with emotion to hear a bride and groom pledge: “with my body I honour you, all that I am I give to you, and all that I have I share with you...”? While weddings can be themed to suit the tastes of couples in many different ways, the end result on the day is the same: a couple married in the sight of God. While I am no longer on the lookout for famous guests as at the high profile St Paul’s weddings, I am especially proud on wedding days, as a virger, to help make sure the special day for all Minster wedding couples goes just as they envisioned. When you hear the bells pealing on a summer’s day, you might just catch a glimpse of a happy, newly married Mr and Mrs! Robyn Cleveland - Head Virger

DIY – The Best Worst Way to Save Money

The summer’s here, and it’s the time of the year we finally get around to doing those home improvement jobs we’ve been talking about since January. Whilst DIY can be a great way to improve your living space for less, it can cost you an arm and a leg should something go wrong and you don’t have the proper cover. It is always a good idea to call your insurer to check that you are covered in the event of a DIY disaster, and certainly to make sure that any structural changes will not void your policy. Now, please don’t take this as a reason to fear putting that shelf up, if you’re confident in the task you’re undertaking then there’s no reason to not do it. However, we’ve all made plans in the past where we’re overestimating our handyman/woman talents and that’s where the danger lies. For those who live in new-builds though, it’s worth checking your

12

building guarantee before undertaking any work to make sure you don’t void it. Something else to bear in mind is that when any major work is completed, whether it be by yourself or via a contractor, it is imperative you notify your insurance provider as it can affect any future payouts. For example, if you were to add an en suite to a bedroom, this would count as an extra room added to your house, leaving a potential reason for an insurer to not pay out. One of the advantages of renewing your home and contents insurance through a broker is that we can break down all of these details for you to make sure that the insurance you get fully covers you for everything that you need – including if you’ve got a slight addiction to DIY!

Behind The Green Door

The style and colour of your front door says much more about you than you possibly realise. It’s a portal to your personality.

14

First impressions count, and no more so than when it comes to our homes. The choices we make about the style and colour of key exterior elements such as the front door can say more about who we are and our personality than we may realise. Colour has long been seen by psychologists as a way of analysing and identifying key personality types. The majority of us are likely to impress our favourite shades on the entrance to our homes – after all, it’s the first thing we see when we return home. The front door, it seems, is as much a portal into our personalities as it is into our living spaces. Green is one of the most popular choices for front doors, and says a lot about those who choose it. Pale green shades are fresh, natural and airy, suggesting an open, welcoming and tranquil personality who strives to achieve a sense of well-being; while dark green is popular with country dwellers and nature lovers, representing traditional values and respect, and is, in fact, particularly favoured by older homeowners.

Blue is the colour of peace. A lighter blue is associated with the ocean and those who have a love of the sea along with the openness that implies, whereas a deeper blue goes one step further and is indicative of honesty and intelligence. A bright pink, a vivid red or even a splash of citrus orange signifies an outgoing and extrovert personality. Red, in particular, implies a vibrant and lively homeowner and says “welcome” in big bold letters, hence is more common among younger homeowners who are sociable, extrovert and keen to express creativity. Pink is a feminine statement and suggests a loving and thoughtful homeowner. The more neutral shades of black, grey or brown reveal quite the opposite, with the resident most likely careful, conscientious and conservative. But if you want to be seen by neighbours as important and earnest, then why not take inspiration from 10 Downing Street, and adorn it with a coat of shiny black gloss? But it’s not just about colour. If you are investing in a new door then it’s worth considering what its style could suggest about you and your home. While traditionalists are more likely to opt for the panelled timber and modern types may select a clean-lined simplistic design, it is important to bear in mind the period and style of your property when choosing a front door. You must be sympathetic to any key architectural details. So if you have a Georgian villa in the centre of town, no matter how much you fancy a country cottage-style stable door, the advice is to resist. Similarly if you have a state-of-the-art modern new build then a fourpanelled classic design is going to look totally out of place.

Close to home ...

Having that feeling that it is time to have a break? Not sure where but not wanting to travel so far. Well our own country may well be the answer with wonderful countryside if the weather is good, there is no nicer place. Scotland - as you go over the border you feel as though you are abroad as the scenery changes dramatically, often resembling the landscape of Norway. The weather is pretty much the same as we can expect throughout the UK but in the height of the summer the midges can be a problem, I always find May is a pleasant month along with the autumn tones of late October. During our winter months a break on the English Riviera always seems to come up trumps weather wise. It certainly makes you realise why it gets its name. We have often enjoyed sitting out in the sun Sailing in to Venice in March along with a spot of sightseeing enroute in the Cotswolds plus Exeter and Plymouth. What ever the weather, for adults only Warner’s Historic hotels offer quality and great entertainment and Alvaston shown opposite is just a short bus ride from the historic town of Nantwich. Whilst the other hotels of the group tend to be located deep in the countryside offering an away from it all holiday, with plenty to do if you so wish. How about an island holiday? We have many islands to offer, including the Channel Isles. From history to superb white sand beaches. The Channel Isles, Scottish Isles and Scilly Isles all offer you a holiday where you can island hop. Enjoy a range of Fauna and unique wildlife close to the sea. Perhaps you have not been to a good old British seaside resort in years? You will be surprised how the resorts have altered over the years. Blackpool has the most wonderful promenade now and a mix of hotels to suit all budgets, whether visiting to see the famous lights in the high season or enjoying an out of season quiet break. Llandudno, located on the North Wales Coast, retains many signs of it Victorian past, with a long pier and superb sweeping bay protected at each end by the hills of the Great Orme and the Little Orme. Eastbourne, located on our south coast, has wonderful seafront Gardens along with beautifully kept blue and white buildings and not an amusement in sight. This offers you a very unspoilt seaside holiday. Whether you are wanting to travel by your own car, travel by rail or sit back and relax and travel by coach there are many options . Accommodation in hotels, apartments, lodges, caravans, boats and barges. Food for thought, we are here if you would like to know more. At Marion Owen Travel we offer a full portfolio of holidays by all modes of transport so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us organise your next life enriching adventure. Marion

Parents urged to apply early to buy school bus passes Parents in the East Riding are being urged to apply for school transport passes as soon as possible – to increase their chances of securing a seat for their child. For school pupils and sixth form students not entitled to free school transport, parents can fill in an application form to buy a travel pass from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which will then put their child on a waiting list. Once all seats have been filled by students eligible for free transport, the remaining seats will then be allocated to those who have applied to buy a travel pass, on a priority basis.

18

Applications received after Sunday 31 July will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Parents can apply now for a travel pass by visiting the

website www.eastriding.gov.uk/schoolstransport and completing an online form. Travel passes will be allocated from 1 August and most will be posted out by the start of the autumn term in September. Students who may be planning to go on to sixth form for the first time, but are waiting for their exam results, are being urged to apply for travel passes now to get on the waiting list, as applications can be easily cancelled if they are not eventually needed. The council’s school transport team handles thousands of applications every summer for both free and paidfor bus passes. Councillor Andy Burton, the council’s portfolio holder for planning, highways and transportation, said: “The start of the summer holidays can be a busy time for families, but organising school transport for their children is one of the most important jobs they need to do early. “So we would encourage parents to get their bus pass applications in now to avoid disappointment in September.” For further information please visit the website www.eastriding.gov.uk/schoolstransport also carries useful information such as school bus routes and times and allows people to ask questions and report problems.

New cycleway & footway completed across Beverley Westwood East Riding of Yorkshire Council has completed work on the new £265,000 cycleway and footway across a section of Beverley Westwood. The new route runs along the B1230 from Cartwright Lane to a location near the playground on Broadgate.

children, attending the local schools.” The cycle track alongside the busy B1230 is the final link in a network of routes connecting Beverley to nearby villages. The network included an off road cycle route along Broadgate to Walkington and this final section has extended this facility through to Beverley. The B1230 is a busy, narrow road which is unattractive to cyclists due to the speed and volume of traffic. The new cycle path provides a dedicated facility for all cyclists, resulting in a safe and continuous off road route segregated from traffic, particularly beneficial for many local children who can safely make the journey from Walkington to their secondary schools in Beverley. This route is also part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network (Route 164 and the Yorkshire Wolds route) and these improvements are helping promote cycle tourism in the area, boosting the local economy and supporting local businesses.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said: “I am delighted that we have now completed this important and useful improvement scheme with minimal impact on the Westwood area. “The council is a keen advocate of cycling as both a leisure activity and as a sustainable form of transport. We are continuing to develop the cycling infrastructure of the East Riding with a focus on providing safe routes for cyclists. “The B1230 is a heavily-used commuter route and this development of an off-road cycle route has improved the safety of cyclists, and in particular

The previous footway was in poor condition and the new work has included completely resurfacing the path and widening it by an average of 50cm (less than two feet). The improved surface, with dropped kerbs and tactile paving at any crossing points, provides better access for those with mobility issues. The new path will encourage local residents to access the common using sustainable, healthy transport modes and will allow a wide range of users to enjoy the green open space offered by the Westwood.

THE UNDERTONES Play Fibbers, York on Friday 26th August 2016

2016 is the 40th Anniversary of The Undertones and they are delighted to announce that they will be celebrating this anniversary with national and international live shows and some exciting releases.

32

The Undertones emerged from Derry in 1976, the result of five friends learning how to play basic rock and roll. Even by the standards of that decade Derry was not the rock and roll capital of anywhere. With no live bands worth watching, they learned by listening to mail order records, reading one of the few copies of NME that made it to Derry but most of all from listening to John Peel’s wonderful show on BBC Radio One. Practicing in their bedrooms eventually led to the band recording Teenage Kicks E.P. in 1978 on Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations label in Belfast.

The legendary DJ John Peel received a copy and like it so much he played it twice in a row on his radio show. The Undertones signed with Sire Records and ‘Teenage Kicks’ was released followed by further punk pop gems such as `Here Comes The Summer`, Jimmy Jimmy`, `My Perfect Cousin`, `You’ve Got My Number (Why Don’t You Use It)’ and four LPs. Tickets for the YORK – Fibbers show are available from the following: Friday 26th August 2016 THE UNDERTONES YORK – Fibbers Box Office No: 0844 478 0898 Website - http://www.seetickets.com/ event/the-undertones/fibbers/1006875 Doors: 7.30pm / Stage – 8.00pm Tickets - £20.00 (advance)

Gardening

Gardening in August Use your own garden as an excuse to spend time with your family and make sure you take time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Think bulbs! The distinctive varieties often sell out very quickly, so get ahead with reserving your selection! Indulge yourself with some sumptuous peony flowered types in flamboyant colours. Delay planting tulips until November for the best results. l Keep your Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well. l Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight. l Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. l Dead-head bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them self-seeding and to encourage further flowering into the autumn. l Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year. l Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact. l Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy. l As your Penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers.

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre l Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost. l Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming. l Prune your Wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy sideshoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). l Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowerers in which case leave them). l Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil. l Mow wildflower meadows now to help scatter the seeds. l Take cuttings of your favourite tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsia to propagate them for next year. l Finish dividing clumps of Bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flowers buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. l Now is a good time to spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weedkiller as the plant has lots of leaf surface area with which to absorb it. l Look out for symptoms of Clematis Wilt such as wilting leaves and black discolouration on the leaves and stems of your Clematis. Cut out any infected plant material and dispose of it in your household waste.

l If you’re planning on laying a new lawn this autumn, prepare the area now to give it time to settle. This also allows weeds to germinate so you can clear the area thoroughly before planting. l Recut any lawn edges if needed. Try installing lawn edging to make future maintenance easier. l If your lawn is infested by ants, brush out the nests on a dry day. Always brush them away before mowing.

Looking after your lawn

l Check plants daily and water them if the soil is dry. l Damp down your greenhouse on hot days to increase humidity and deter red spider mites. l Open vents and doors on warm days. l Use blinds or apply shade paint to prevent the greenhouse from over-heating in sunny weather. l Try hanging sticky traps to catch flying pests and help determine which pest control is needed. l Tidy up fallen leaves and flowers to discourage disease.

l Don’t worry if your lawn is looking brown, the autumn rains will soon make it green again. l Don’t feed your lawn with a high-nitrogen fertiliser now as this will encourage lots of lush new growth which is easily damaged by autumn weather. l Lawn growth slows down in late summer so raise the cutting height of your lawn mower to help the grass cope.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Finally - it’s Summer! Wow, I am absolutely loving the sunshine - and I do so hope that it’s still shining when you’re reading this!! One thing I can’t abide though is people who complain that it’s too hot! How dare they?! A few months ago they were the same people complaining it was too cold or too wet! All you need to do is take a few “hot” precautions. Drink plenty of fluids (I’m talking water not lager!), stay out of the midday sun and remember to lather yourself with sunscreen. I also find those tiny mini handbag fans a godsend! You could also wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (also handy as the perfect disguise!) Don’t forget, though, to keep little ones out of the sun. And especially please don’t leave children, or animals for that matter, in the car with the windows shut while you pop into a shop or cafe. I know it’s common sense not to do that but, sadly, it happens far too often.

Walking with Pokemon! 38 We’ve walked with the dinosaurs, now it’s the time of the Pokemon!

You might have noticed more children (and adults!) walking around looking down at their phones. What you might not realize is that they’re not texting or checking their social media accounts, they hunting for Pokemon. Pokemon Go is the latest craze and you can’t help but get caught up in it. It’s basically an electronic treasure hunt but rather than finding pots of gold you’re hunting virtual multi-coloured creatures. When you find one, you see it superimposed on the screen next to you, as though it’s really there. What’s fantastic about it is that it’s forcing children out of the house - and, course, the parents have to go too! Unless they walk around to different locations, they can’t find the many characters. There’s more than 151 I think! Who knows, you could be standing next to a Squirtle, a Spearow, a Caterpie or an Evee right now!
