BeverleyMag February 2016 Dear Readers Welcome to the February edition of your Beverley Mag. In this month’s edition we have lots of local news as well as a bumper Spring Wedding feature that is just in time for the Beverley Minster Wedding Fair on Saturday 5th March. So if you are already planning a wedding (or perhaps you’re a lady who is planning to propose on February 29th!!! ) we have the best local wedding suppliers and advice within the feature, with more to be found at the Wedding Fair - which is free to attend and has two bridal catwalk shows and over 50 exhibitors. We have X-Factor tickets to be won in the monthly competition and the usual crossword and suduko puzzles to get your brain exercised. For our green fingered readers we have our regular gardening advice - It’s still a bit cold to catch me in the garden though!! Graham Stuart our local MP has been busy looking after our interests by keeping an eye on Ambulance response times. There is a great gig coming up at the Processed Pea Folk Club in Etton with Rab Noakes playing in early March and I would highly recommend seeing him. Until next month - take care and enjoy the magazine Kind regards

Response Times
At the beginning of February, I met Yorkshire Ambulance Service Chairman Della Cannings and Chief Executive Rod Barnes to hold them to account about the Trust’s continuing poor performance in rural areas of the East Riding. Response times in Mid and South Holderness have been a major concern for some time. The latest data I have obtained revealed that in Mid Holderness these hit a low of just 24.4% of calls responded to in under 8 minutes in September 2015. The national target is for 75% of such calls to be answered in this time. In the second half of 2015, response times slipped in every postcode covering the constituency compared to the first half of the year. The figures are better in Beverley itself, but it is unacceptable that response times in rural areas of my constituency continue to trail. I have fought for changes to staff rostering and to call assignments so rural crews are more likely to return to their posts after taking patients to hospital in Hull. However, I am still concerned. I have now written to the Health Secretary asking him to look into the problem and consider the lessons that could be applied from other ambulance trusts serving rural areas. I hope and expect we’ll see improvement in 2016 and this will remain a major priority.

Minding the Minster
Victoria to wed Albert
The second month of the new year and already we’re starting to feel a little bit of déjà vu. The reason for this is that ITV cameras are returning to Beverley Minster to film scenes for their new costume drama: ‘Victoria’, based on the diaries of Britain’s second longest-serving monarch. Last year we stood in for Westminster Abbey as set designers lovingly recreated the coronation of the young queen: helium balloons filled with special lights hovered over our nave helping illuminate the scenes: several dozen extras recreated the Lords, Ladies and assorted flummery who were around at the time while members of our choir valiantly sang away in the background on demand.
Victoria’s wedding to Prince Albert. For three days the Minster will be closed to all visitors. And then, if everything goes as smoothly as it did last year, the technicians will strip their equipment down with absolutely no fuss and it will all be over. On Thursday morning we will be open as a parish church once more and no traces of the television industry will remain. It will be fascinating to see how the old place comes across on the small screen – and I expect we’ll get a lot more visitors next year as a result. Here’s hoping. By Neil Pickford, Assistant Virger
It took two days to set it all up – not counting a whole bank of scaffolding outside to support massive lights that recreated a perfect sunny day inside. Then, from early on Wednesday morning to mid-afternoon around 70 technicians, makeup artists, camera operators, lighting experts and ‘best-boys-and-girls’ (or similar) – plus actors - co-operated to produce high quality television which will fill the ‘Downton Abbey’ slot some time later this year. After editing it will probably end up as about five minutes of film. The company obviously thought the experience was worthwhile however because they are coming back in February to recreate

Councillors urge residents to have their say on fire service proposals East Riding councillors will be supporting the merger of fire stations on the south bank of the River Humber after hearing about proposals by the fire service at a specially convened scrutiny meeting.
8
The proposals by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service were presented to members of East Riding Council’s safer and stronger communities overview and scrutiny sub-committee by deputy chief officer, Chris Blacksell, Niall McKiniry, director of emergency response and Richard Walker, secretary of the Fire Brigades Union. Members heard how the fire service needs to make significant savings to meet its budget shortfall following the Government’s recent spending review and were told how they were consulting with the public on a range of options which include: l merge Immingham East and West fire stations or remove one fire engine from Immingham West fire station l remove one fire engine from Market Weighton OR Brough l remove one fire engine from Hornsea l remove one engine from Withernsea. The proposals relating to the East Riding do not involve shutting stations, just reducing the number of appliances at stations from two to one.
Councillor Brian Skow, chairman of the safer and stronger communities overview and scrutiny sub-committee said: “I would like to thank the officers from the fire service and fire brigade union for coming to speak to members of the committee about the proposals and the affect they would have on people of the East Riding. These are important proposals and I would urge all residents within the East Riding to have a look at the consultation and have their own say on the fire service’s proposals.” The closing date for the consultation is Mon 22 February and people wanting to have a say on their proposals should go to http://www.humbersidefire.gov. uk/operational-efficiency-programme-survey

Live Music in Beverley
Rab Noakes to play The Processed Pea Folk Club
March 7th, 2016 (8.00pm) at The Light Dragoon. Etton Rab Noakes is unique. He’s a Scottish singer-songwriter, guitarist and music historian who can switch effortlessly between pop and folk, and has worked with everyone from Gerry Rafferty (with whom he co-founded Stealers Wheel) to Barbara Dickson.
10
Rab is in remarkable form, as his recently released double album of his “21st-century skiffle” proves. The first set consists of new compositions that show his gift for melody and love of Americana, and include the glorious Out of Your Sight, influenced by Buddy Holly (who apparently admired Lonnie Donegan), a stomping tribute to a 1920s minstrel singer and a poignant lament for Rafferty. The second album is dominated by “interpretations” of songs from early Cliff Richard to Garbage and Beck, along with the skiffle standard Freight Train and a finely sung treatment of the traditional The Two Sisters. Rab is upported by Poet Sue Houlston and floor singers Tickets £10.00 from Minster Records or Box Office: 01430 810669

Travel
Greece,
not just beaches...
Just 4 hours flight away and always looked upon as a summer only destination. The islands are at there very best when the sun is shining, so not great places to be in inclement weather as many are a beach destination! The majority of summer visitors go for the wonderful beaches with sightseeing secondary on the “to do list”. Islands such as Santorini, Crete & Rhodes have interesting places but for example, Ios, Paros, Zante, Skiathos are 99% beach but very nice islands. During the summer months the mainland and islands offer fabulous options for families, couples, singles & island hopping holidays. I have enjoyed many myself swimming in the clear waters and enjoying wonderful meals in authentic Greek Taverna’s. There are many options when it comes to accommodation with something to suit every budget and taste including all inclusive options. Island hopping was always something linked to back packers and many still do take this option, but you may wish to island hop but with a bit more luxury? Then how about your own boat with a skipper & cook allowing you to put down anchor where and when you wish? Or join many of the various ships that sail each week from the port of Piraeus on the outskirts of Athens? Cruise ships of all sizes sail from the main commercial harbour offering itineraries from 7 nights upwards. One of my favourite that I can highly recommend are Regent 7 Sea’s, ideal for couples taking in several islands. Everything included you can leave your purse behind & enjoy a luxurious holiday. What about something a little different, how about a Motor sailer? With just 49 guests, resembling a pirate ship you can sail aboard Galileo around the Greek Islands from the pretty Zea Marina of Piraeus visiting a selection of islands for a week throughout the summer months. The winter sees the islands with few guests and you very rarely see Greece advertised in a winter holiday brochure. Therefore you may well be surprised that the temperatures in the winter months are pleasant and this time of the year offers a great opportunity to visit the ancient sights in comfort and Greece has more than her fair share of these to offer. During the Autumn Galileo offers something very different. Sailing around the Peloponnese Peninsula visiting the ancient sights. This is a superb week & includes a programme of lectures on board to allow you to make the most of the sights included in your cruise. The finale of the itinerary is sailing through the Corinth Canal - something many have a wish to do in their lifetime. The building of this canal saved a round trip of over 300 miles when it was constructed. A time when such large ships were never imagined hence now only the smaller ships can squeeze through this narrow transit. How things change as the years go by! If you have not been to Athens this is a great city break too. Lynne & I visited last October to inspect ships & Athens & it was superb. Life is all about wonderful memories, let us help you create your travel memories this year. For any holidays or more information on the above we look forward to hearing from you. Marion

Spring Weddings
It’s not a wedding until…
6. You smile so much you think your face might get stuck like that forever, but kind of in a good way.
When it comes to your wedding day, some things are pretty much guaranteed. Our advice? Just embrace the madness!
7. Someone slips while attempting to catch the bouquet. Then tries to s tyle it out by casually hobbling off, flowers in hand. Move along, nothing to see over here…
There are a few things that are guaranteed to make an appearance at every wedding day. Get your bingo cards at the ready....
1. Your dad sees you in your dress for the first time and tells you how proud he is of you. Tears all round, swiftly followed by emergency make-up repair. Wet wipe, here, now! 2. The vicar or registrar makes a joke about the bride not turning up. Funny for the guests; anxiety inducing for the groom. (FYI it’s a bride’s prerogative to keep her man waiting a teensy bit). 3. You hear the opening bar of your entrance song and feel a bit wobbly. Then you see the faces of everyone you love and feel 100% awesome! 4. Your groom kicks off his speech with “My wife and I...”. Cue whoops, cheers and a few muffled sobs from the bridesmaid who’s had the lion’s share of the table wine.
8. An usher ends up with his tie around his head. Inevitable. 9. Your mum and aunties hit the dance floor, whilst loudly proclaiming, “now this is how it’s done”. Hopefully not to Beyoncé Single Ladies though. Just a bit wrong. 10. Something you thought was soooo important doesn’t go entirely to plan, and you couldn’t care less because you are having the BEST DAY EVER!
5. You have to put your hands over Granny’s ears during the best man’s speech. No gran should hear the story about what went down on the 2015 5-a-side lads’ weekend away.

10 Wedding things you’ll regret not doing Don’t have any regrets on your wedding day with our fab guide. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, but it’s easy to avoid ‘if only’ wedding regrets if you follow our handy guide! 1. Not doing a ‘morning of the wedding’ gift swap It’s the cutest way to connect with each other without actually being together and whatever gifts you give are sure to be treasured. Tears guaranteed! 2. Not having ‘the chat’ with your photographer You know, the one where you fill them in on all the photos you definitely want taking. If you specifically want a photo with great aunt Edna or your school friends make sure they know about it. 3. Not having a videographer It flies by so quickly that being able to re-watch the special moments from your day is priceless. If your budget won’t stretch, ask a friend to film the ceremony and speeches instead. 4. Not adding personal touches Some of the coolest weddings we’ve been to are ones where the bride and
14
groom have filled their day with unique touches. Think cute personalised vows, quirky readings and imaginative DIY touches. It’s the easiest way to make your wedding day all about the two of you. 5. Not indulging yourself with a luxurious beauty treatment OK, so this is the one time you can totally justify that pricey facial, tan or pedicure. It is a bride’s prerogative to treat herself don’t you know! 6. Not getting ready with your bridal party You know how much fun it is getting ready with your girlfriends before a big night out? Well times that by 1,000 and you’re not even close to how amazing it is to spend the morning of your wedding with your gorgeous bridesmaids. Best fun ever! Continued on Page 16

Saturday 5th March 2016 11am - 3pm • Free Entry 7. Not keeping an eye on the time when getting ready Sounds like the most obvious thing, yes? But believe us, in the chaotic excitement of getting ready it’s easy to lose track of time Ask one of your bridesmaids to be chief timekeeper to make sure everything runs smoothly. 8. Not making a speech if you want to If you’ve got your heart set on making a speech, but are worried about the nerves taking over or guests getting restless, relax! Everyone is there because they love you, and chances are your speech will be one of the highlights of the day. You go girl!

Beverley 107.8FM Radio Station Celebrates their 1st Birthday Beverley FM radio station is one year old and is going from strength to strength as it delivers top quality programmes, news and music to the people of Beverley and surrounding areas. Beverley FM is a not-for-profit community radio station specifically designed to serve Beverley and the surrounding villages which went on-air on January 20th 2015. Beverley FM provides an exciting mix of music, entertainment, news, and sport, all with a distinctly local Beverley feel, 24 hours a day from studios in the town.
26
Beverley FM was set up by a group of local businessmen and radio professionals led by Dave Fewster the well-known Beverley based radio presenter. Dave said “It has been an exhilarating and rewarding first year and the whole team is very excited about growing the station further over the next 12 months.” Dave told BeverleyMag. “I had felt for many years that a radio station broadcasting from Beverley would be very popular in the local area, and the first years feedback from the local community has more than proved that.”

Gardening
February Gardener General tasks and garden maintenance
Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Although temperatures should start to rise this month, there is still a risk of frost and even snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden fleece around them and check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. Tender trees and shrubs will thank you for a generous application of dry mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions. Once the ground isn’t frozen, make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down.
28
Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow and... Continued on Page 30

Gardening Remember not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth. When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill.
mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure as to how to begin!
Birds
It’s another lean month for wildlife and especially birds. Putting out fresh water and food is really important, especially on cold days. You’ve heard it all before, but please do buy good quality bird food or fat/suet balls and check that water is not frozen.
Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!
Lawns
30
Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
FED UP OF PHISHING? I don’t know about you but I am really fed up with phishing emails. You know the ones I’m talking about. Emails with invoices attached claiming I owe hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds for products I haven’t bought! Emails telling me thousands of pounds have been deposited into my bank account and that I should open the attachment for details! (Clearly you must never do this because they probably contain a virus.) I’m even getting emails from abroad from people asking me to be to be their friend. Do they (the hackers behind the phishing) really think I’m so stupid as to not realize that all their messages are identical, they’ve just signed off with a different name?! And I’m getting emails about things that, quite frankly, are a bit shocking! I will say no more! Except, perhaps, to say that these phishers need to find alternative bait – or better still hang up 38 their rods for good!
LOVE IS IN THE AIR…… Or is it? Yes it’s that time of year again when red roses, champagne, chocolates and romantic dinners will be bought and booked for that one special day of the year – Valentine’s Day! Of course, if you are a regular reader of my column, you will know that I am under no illusions of any of the above. “I can tell you I love you on any day of the year! It’s just an excuse for companies to inflate their prices and make more money,” says my husband.” Sadly, I don’t necessarily disagree with him. But I am a romantic at heart and although I can do without the roses and champagne, I wouldn’t say “No!” to chocolate! What? I’m just saying!!!!!
NEED MORE SLEEP? Well if you don’t, I do! I looked back at my New Year’s resolutions from last year and one of them was to get to bed at least before midnight, but preferably by 10.30pm. Yes, you guessed it, I failed quite often - and I’m still failing! But my motto is to never give up, so here’s to more sleep from now on and fewer woolly head moments!
