BeverleyMag MARCH 2014 Dear Readers, Welcome to the March edition of your BEVERLEY MAG. In this edition we are pledging our support to Beverley FM and would encourage you all to get behind the proposed new radio station for Beverley. Dave Fewster and the team at Beverley FM have submitted their bid to ofcom and are awaiting the imminent news that they will be awarded the license for Beverley. They are currently streaming the radio live on the internet and I must say it is all we listen to in the BeverleyMag office. I can’t wait for them to go live so I can listen in the car too! Bike & Go has arrived in the town and we have a little feature on that which will hopefully get people using this new service. And before you all start to comment, NO! Boris Johnson is not involved!! We also have two new books in the magazine that will be of interest to local people and those further afield too, we have a local visits book that looks at East Yorkshire villages by Martin Limon. Your Local History

East Yorkshire Village Visits: A New Local History Book Author Martin Limon explains how it came to be written…. Early in 2007 the editor of a well-known county magazine asked me if I would be interested in writing a series called ‘village visit’. I eagerly accepted the challenge and decided from the outset that I would focus my attention on social history, personalities, and interesting events to make the series as accessible as possible to the readership. Much of the research was carried out at the ‘Treasure House’ in Beverley where the East Riding Archive’s collection of historical records, old newspapers, census returns and the like provided a rich source of inspiration for a series that ran from 2007 to 2014. The East Riding Archive also provided me with much of the material for two books based on the series. The first of these was: ‘The Villages of East Yorkshire’, published by Blackthorn Press in 2011.

6

BeverleyMag MARCH 2014 Forty villages from the early years of the magazine series were included in this volume including Tickton, Bishop Burton, Walkington, Leven and Brandesburton. My new book, East Yorkshire Village Visits, was published by Fonthill Media in December 2013. Thirty-one villages from the magazine series published in 2011, 2012 and 2013 comprise this new volume and I have taken the opportunity to include both new and previously unpublished historical material. Among these fascinating communities, large and small, are Molescroft, Hotham, South Dalton and Goodmanham. East Yorkshire Village Visits is available from the Beverley Tourist Information Centre, Sokells of Driffield, Spring Garden Centre in Sigglesthorne and from Amazon. Pictured above is The Molescroft Inn. There was a licensed house at Molescroft from 1754. During the 19th century the public house here was known by several names including the Wellington, the Trafalgar Goodmanham Road around 1900 and the Grapes. (image courtesy of Merle Skinner)

Your local Independent Funeral Directors – there for you in times of need! Originally established in 1961 by D W Frankish of Brandesburton, the business was successfully taken over in 1976 by Mr Charles Allott of Hornsea. And is still being run by the Allott family today. C M Allott and Son Ltd, pride themselves on being a family run business, offering a 24 hour service, when you need it. They offer all the usual services expected from the larger companies including a private chapel of rest and various funeral plan options. As a small family run business they are better able accommodate funerals sooner than some of their larger rivals in the area. They offer a very personal but professional service. The many thank you cards on display in their Hornsea premises, say much about the service they provide at what is a most difficult time. 8

BIKE & GO CYCLE HIRE LAUNCHES AT BEVERLEY RAILWAY STATION

BeverleyMag MARCH 2014 The council’s transport policy team has a good track record in securing external funding and preparing bids for projects that improve the transport infrastructure of the East Riding and securing these 10 bikes is the latest success.

Residents and visitors arriving at Beverley Railway Station can now complete the last leg of their journey on two wheels, thanks to a Euro-style bicycle hire scheme called Bike & Go.

10

The new Bike & Go Scheme will mean rail users can explore the historic town of Beverley using new cycle lanes and infrastructure implemented by East Riding of Yorkshire Council through the Local Transport Plan process. The scheme is also designed to cater for commuters who may want to avoid a long walk to the office or to meetings in Beverley. There are 10 hire bikes located next to the ticket office at Beverley Railway Station and usage will be monitored and more bikes supplied if demand is high. After registering at www.bikeandgo.co.uk and paying an annual subscription of £10, users receive a smartcard which they can take to Beverley station ticket office to obtain a key giving access to a bike. Bikes can be hired for £3.80 for 24 hours with a maximum hire of 72 hours. Bikes must be returned to the station from where the hire was made during station ticket office opening hours. Each bike is fitted with a lock to enable users to keep the bikes secure, as well as luggage holders and pedal operated lights. Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning, said: The Bike & Go Scheme for Beverley is fantastic and helps promote a number of priorities important to the council, including supporting sustainable transport, improving the health and wellbeing or residents and visitors and allowing them to explore the exciting tourism offer of the town, which in turn support the local economy.

The Bike & Go Scheme has been implemented by train operator Abellio at 50 stations across the north of England following a £1.65 million grant from the Department for Transport and match funding from Mersey Rail, Northern Rail and Greater Anglia. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Transport Policy Team has been working closely with Abellio to secure funding to implement the scheme in Beverley. Bike & Go is modelled on the OV Fiets system installed at stations in the Netherlands by Dutch state rail operator NS. Abellio is currently developing an app for smartphones to inform people how many bikes are available for hire at each station in real-time. Further information on the scheme is available at www.bikeandgo.co.uk

Top Ten Travel Tips 1) Wash your clothes in the sink / shower. Use the hotel soap. Or take a little traveller sized bottle of laundry detergent with you. It’s much easier than finding a Laundromat in a foreign country. And there are only so many times that you can wear the same pair of undies. 2) Learn how to use a needle and thread. You’ve only got space for a few items of clothing. Sewing a broken button back on will save you a lot of hassle. 3) Carry baby wipes / facewipes. This can be used

12

to feel clean when there are no showers. Yes, sometimes there are NO showers. 4) Learn how to say “no thank you”. Most travel advice columns will tell you to learn how to say “hello”, “yes please”, “thank you” and “do you speak English?”. But in some countries you really want to be able to say “no thank you, please leave me alone”. Think about the crowded market places in Asia. Knowing how to say “no thank you” in their language is going to give you a lot more peace. 5) Grocery stores are a traveller’s best resource. Cheap food, local flavours. Have a picnic lunch every day. 6) Keep an emergency stash of money. If you lose your wallet you will still need to eat. 7) Make sure your bank cards work. There is nothing more annoying on holidays than spending hours on the phone to the bank back home. 8) Roll your clothes when packing. No creases and more clothes fit into your suitcase. 9) Always keep a stash of spare plastic bags for dirty clothes / shoes. Smelly socks will make your clean clothes stink. Always. 10) Learn how to swim. You never know when you might need to on the spur of the moment. Please mention BEVERLEYMAG when responding to our advertisers. Thank you.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY

BeverleyMag MARCH 2014

We’re Backing the Bid By Beverley FM – Are You? Regular readers of the Beverley Mag will know that we have been reporting for over 5 months that there’s the prospect that Beverley may soon have its own local radio station. The directors and management team of Beverley FM have submitted a formal licence request and are waiting for a decision from broadcast regulator Ofcom as to whether the town can have its own community radio station broadcasting on FM. Local broadcaster and businessman Dave Fewster, leads the group of local radio professionals, businessmen, and volunteers who 16 have submitted plans for the new not-for-profit radio station specifically designed to serve Beverley and the surrounding villages. It’s envisaged that Beverley FM will provide an exciting mix of programmes, music, entertainment, news, and sport, all with a distinctly local feel, 24 hours a day from studios in the town. “We have been overwhelmed with the support we are getting in the town and especially the number of people listening online to our programmes at www.beverleyfm.com and local businesses that are advertising with us,” Dave Fewster told Beverley Mag. “We understand that licence applications take time to be considered by Ofcom and that’s fine by us and we just have to be patient! We are working very hard with community groups and businesses to establish Beverley FM as a well-known organisation in the town,” he added.

Here at Beverley Mag we’re Backing the Bid by Beverley FM as we think it will be a great asset to the town and its residents. We want you to do the same. So if you’re the owner of a local business or just a community minded resident, we are asking you to Back the Bid and support the radio station’s current online broadcasting with a £59 donation. Local businesses that sponsor the radio station will get an advert on the Beverley FM website and also regular radio credits on the stations programme streaming service. All funds raised will be used to maintain the stations existing services and prepare for FM broadcasting. “If the station is unsuccessful in its bid for a licence we will donate all the surplus money raised to a local charity,” said Dave Fewster.

“A great asset to the town and its residents”

Remember Beverley FM is a not-for-profit company and nobody gets paid for the work that is being done. If you can’t afford to be a sponsor but have time on your hands Beverley FM would love to hear from you as they are always interested in talking with potential volunteers.

You can find out more about Beverley FM by visiting the website at: www.beverleyfm.com Or check their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/BeverleyFM/478535998837969?ref=hl

Tips & Advice

BeverleyMag MARCH 2014

Could Google be your next best friend? Everyone knows about ‘Googling’ to find information on the Internet - after all Google IS the new Yellow Pages! But Google has more to offer than a great search experience - Much more! Opening a free Gmail account is the first step into an Aladdin’s Cave of free applications, software and time saving tools that will save time and increase productivity. The set up process is simple and can be located here https://accounts.google.com/ Once we have an account opened, we can look at a couple of simple tips.

20

Tip #1 - If you have more than a couple of email accounts - Get Gmail to pick up all your email from all of your accounts. It’s a straightforward matter to get your emails collected using the settings tab located beneath the gearwheel at the top right of your Gmail page. You also get the option during this process to set up ‘send mail as’ this will allow you to send and receive mail directly from your

Gmail account as if you were logged in to any of your other accounts. Google allows you to operate this service with up to 5 external email accounts you own - What a time saver!

Tip #2 - With an Android phone you can now synchronise all your Google Contacts / Calendar items and Emails straight into the phone and vice versa, just by adding your Google account details to the phone - Got an Iphone? No worries - download the free Google app from the ITunes store and it works for you too! Lost or changed your phone? No problem just set up your Google account on another phone, and your stuff syncs right down for you automatically. Happy Googling! Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil is pleased to announce that its signature production of Dralion, will be touring UK arenas in 2014: visiting Sheffield Motorpoint Arena 14-18 May. This is the first time that Dralion, which celebrates its 15th Anniversary next year, will have toured arenas in the UK. Dralion Artistic Director Mark Shaub said: “We are very excited to be bringing Dralion to Great Britain next spring. Many of our cast and crew have connections to Great Britain and are looking forward to presenting the show to audiences there. Dralion is a wonderful blend of amazing acrobatics, stunning choreography, live music with hilarious clowns. It’s a feast of colour and emotions that will surely appeal to British audiences”.

In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus embodied, each element is represented by its own evocative colour: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved. From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries.

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS FOR

Fusing the 3000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to two children and a husband.

NOWHERE TO HIDE! It’s seems that no matter where we are, someone can always find us! We all have our smartphones because they make life so much easier and we can deal with everything while we’re out. We can update our status on Facebook while we’re queueing at the supermarket. Or perhaps we’ll send a tweet on Twitter. Or comment on someone’s LinkedIn profile. And, of course, we often feel we have to reply to an email as soon as it’s sent! But do we really want to be so available ALL of the time? We live in a world where we expect everything to be “instant”, but I do sometimes wonder if taking a step back now and again would do us all the world of good!

GAMING AND TABLETS While we’re on the subject of connecting with people, how many of your children play games on the Xbox, Playstation, Wii or iPad? And do they hook up to “join” their schoolfriends while each is 30 sitting in their own house? It’s something that’s come up for me recently and I’m investigating the safeguards at the moment. For instance, if my son joins in a game with a friend online, and that friend is playing with someone we don’t know, how does that work? There are also games where you’re, in effect, text messaging each other, rather than actually talking. Who keeps an eye on what’s being said? My point is, it’s so easy for these gaming devices to become our “childcare”, in that they keep the children entertained while we get on with other things – whether it’s housework or replying to emails! I don’t think any parent would disagree. But it’s really important to keep an eye on security – and put any blocks in place that you deem necessary to keep children safe.

PENGUINS By the way, have you seen the Gentoo penguins at The Deep yet? They are absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a visit to The Kingdom of Ice if you haven’t. You can see them on three levels, both underwater and on land. “Project Penguin” tells us all about the threats to the penguins’ habitat as well as issues like climate change and ocean acidification. But at the end of the day, they are seriously cute! There’s even one called Fiona! What more can I say?!
