NEXT PHASE OF RESURFACING WORKS IN BEVERLEY As work continues on the Beverley Integrated Transport Plan, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is advising motorists of the latest areas where major improvements are to be carried out. • Grovehill roundabout : resurfacing work will be carried out at the new junction by the council’s contractor Balfour Beatty, using four way traffic signals, between 09.30 and 15.30 from Mon 3 November until early December. Holme Church Lane will be closed daily between 09.30am and 15.30pm whilst the works take place. • Figham Junction to Figham roundabout: resurfacing of the new junction will take place by the council’s contractor Balfour Beatty, using three-way traffic signals, from Wednesday 12 November for two weeks, between 09.30am and 15.30pm. Nigel Leighton, the council’s director of environment and neighbourhood services, said: “We do expect significant disruption whilst the

Grovehill and Figham junction works take place, and we are advising drivers to find an alternative route if possible, or make allowances for the delay when using the A1174 Hull Road. “This latest resurfacing continues our co-ordinated sequence of work at several locations in the town, which will ultimately bring many improvements for motorists. By planning the work in this coordinated sequence, and by giving advance notice, we are hoping that motorists will be able to plan their journeys accordingly. We do of course apologise for any inconvenience caused by delays arising from this work. “After the completion of the Integrated Transport Plan, we are confident that motorists will see huge improvements in their journeys across Beverley, and we thank people for their continuing patience and understanding.”

THE CHRISTMAS BAKEOFF IS BACK!

Missing the Great British Bake – Off? East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Christmas Bake-Off competition is back for 2014, as part of the ‘Let’s Waste Less Food’ campaign. The competition encourages budding chefs to create recipes using Christmas leftovers to highlight the amount of food waste produced during the festive season. Finalists in the two categories (11-16 and 17 and over) will have the chance to cook their recipes at The Wolds Cookery School at Southburn on Saturday 13 December, where their efforts will be judged by chef James Mackenzie from the Michelin-starred and Good Food Guide Pub of the Year 2014, The Pipe and Glass Inn at South Dalton.

6

The closing dates for entries is Friday 14 November. Prizes include £100 in vouchers for a meal for two at the Pipe and Glass Inn; signed copies of James Mackenzie’s cook book, ‘On the Menu’’ a designer kitchen caddy and insulated lunch bag; and recycling goody bags including local produce. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said : “We are hoping that people will want to share their ideas with others as to how to make the best of leftover food and family recipes which are passed down from one Boxing Day to the next. Last year’s completion was an amazing experience, with some truly inventive ideas and excellent recipes on show, and I am confident that this year’s event will be equally good.” The winning entries and finalists’ recipes will be made into recipe cards to share with East Riding residents. Entry forms and full details can be found on the council’s website at www.eastriding.gov. uk, or can be picked up at any East Riding of Yorkshire Council leisure centre (apart from South Holderness); Customer Service Centre; or library. Motoring

Winter Motoring

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014

Keeping your vehicle well maintained is really important all year round, but doubly so in winter. For example, worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working correctly and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. And, don’t leave home on that long trip over lonely country roads without enough fuel for the journey.

The following five checks will help ensure your vehicle is ready for winter: Note: Before carrying out these checks, make sure your vehicle is cold and parked on a flat, level surface. If unsure about your vehicle please contact the garages in this feature who are all there to help you.

8

Car Battery - Remember, if your car has not been used for a period of time, the battery may need charging before you come to use it. Coolant - ensure that coolant is between the minimum and maximum markers. It is also important that there is sufficient anti-freeze in the coolant. If you’re uncertain, have a look at your handbook or get a local garage to check the strength. Anti-freeze is cheap but damage from a frozen engine can be very expensive to put right. Tyres - check tyre condition to see if there is adequate tread. Look for damage such as splits or bulges and check the pressure. If you live in an area particulary at risk of snow consider purchasing winter tyres or snow socks which give you greater traction and control. Screenwash - make sure you have enough screenwash and that the concentration is suitable for cold conditions. Not all screenwash is the same so look for the temperature it protects down to. You should be looking for protection down to down to -10 degrees C and if you live in areas subject to the greatest extremes of weather, down to -20 degrees C. If you don’t use a good quality screenwash there

is a danger your washer pump could freeze which might lead to the fuse blowing and your wipers not working because they are often on the same fuse. Wiper blades - check wiper blades for damage and replace if necessary. When wiper blades become frozen to glass it is very easy to damage them when freeing them up. When the temperature drops and your car won’t start it’s more often than not an issue with your car battery. Cold, damp weather can play havoc on batteries as vehicle electrical systems have to work a lot harder at this time of year and starter motors require all the current they can get to start the engine on these cold mornings. With more and more vehicle equipment demanding electricity this is more of a problem than ever. We recommend checking and, if needs be, charging your battery at least once a week during the winter months, particularly if it is more than three years old. Cold temperatures affect the chemical process inside the battery that produces and stores electricity, effectively slowing it down and reducing the battery’s ability to hold the charge. Older, weaker batteries will typically already have reduced performance and cold temperatures will often drastically reduce this further, to the point where the battery will discharge or go flat very quickly. Remember to: Switch off all loads including lights, wipers, heater etc before switching off your engine at the end of your journey This prevents any

unnecessary drain on the battery the next time you start up. Check that everything is switched off before turning the ignition on. Avoid using heaters, heated screens and heated seats for longer than you have to as they all put high demands on the vehicle’s battery. Some satnavs, in-car DVD players and iPods can also drain the battery if left connected.

Check that there are no interior lights, including boot lights, left on or any accessories such as phone chargers left connected. Park your vehicle in a garage whenever possible. Get your battery tested, particularly if it is over three years old

10

And, sometimes it can be difficult just getting into your car. These two tips could save you some much-needed time: Use a little silicone-based furniture polish on the rubber door seals – it helps prevent doors getting stuck when it freezes. It’s best to apply with a cloth so you don’t spray polish on to the vehicle’s paintwork. If locks are frozen, try warming your key. You could also inject the lock with the appropriate anti-freeze or spray it with WD40.

Countdown to Christmas

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014

it’s never too early for Christmas ads Christmas commercials on TV are far more effective than any other kind of advertising for the festive season, new research shows. That explains why John Lewis and other retailers are keen to get their TV spots out early - and always have been It’s happened: Selfridges has unveiled its Christmas window display, and the festive season is officially upon us. It has been sneaking in quietly, like Santa squeezing himself down the chimney, for a while already. Selfridges and Clinton Cards launched their in-store Christmas displays in the summer, and Tesco and M&S among other major retailers have followed suit more recently. “Christmas” has been the most popular search item on the John Lewis website since September 3, according to the retailer, which has already devoted the first tab on its site to the holiday. Elsewhere on the internet you can already order your tree and turkey.

14

Is it too early for retailers to be pumping out the Christmas ads? Shoppers don’t seem to mind: a third of them started their Christmas shopping in September, according to data released today from the retail research agency Shoppercentric. That number climbs to 37pc for 18 to 34 year olds, although just 25pc of people older than 55 have started the seasonal spending. So there’s good reason for retailers to crank out the Christmas ads, even though there are still more than two months until it’s time to rip that wrap off those presents. Two thirds of shoppers readily admit to being influenced by Christmas TV adverts -- vastly more than any other advertising medium, Shoppercentric found. There’s nothing new about Christmas “coming early”. Back in November 1885, a South Carolina-based retailer issued an advert telling readers that “we are now ALL READY to show you the finest

assortment ever exhibited for our NEW STOCK of Beautiful Holiday Goods.” Less than 30 years later, the start of the Christmas advertising season had moved forward several weeks. On 28 October 1912, The Daily Telegraph ran an advert seemingly advertising its own Christmas ads. “This may SEEM a little premature to you -- but it really is NOT -- for you do not have many days left in which to do your Christmas buying,” the piece reads. “Watch the ads in the Telegraph and act accordingly.” Retailers haven’t always welcomed “Christmas creep,” a phrase that was coined in the 1980s. In October 1954, at the National Chamber of Trade conference, British shopkeepers approved a resolution decrying “the tendency to introduce Father Christmas too early in the season.” The US-based discount store KMart faced criticism last year when it aired its first Christmas ad in early September, before some children had returned to school after the summer. This year, the retailer had the answer: it released “not a Christmas commercial.” “Let’s say you have an event in late December that you need a lot of gifts for -- like maybe your entire family is having a birthday on the same day,” the woman in the ad spot says. “Merry birthday, everyone.”

Countdown to Christmas

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014

In the UK, TV ads from retailers such as John Lewis and M&S have gained iconic status in the run-up to Christmas. With 65% of shoppers admitting that Christmas TV ads are effective - compared to around a quarter of people who say that they are influenced by retailers’ own magazines, promotional leaflets and newspaper/magazine adverts, and social media having even less of an impact - it’s no surprise that retail companies are keen to get their ads on telly screens as soon as possible. Christmas sales in the UK, which cover the six week period from mid-November to the end of the year, are a £70bn-plus industry.

16

If retailers want to turn that ad impact into real spending, however, they should make sure their staff don’t look too festive. Shoppercentric’s survey of 1,000 UK shoppers found that although more than half of respondents said they like to see festive window displays and Christmas decorations in store, 61% said they are put off shopping by the sight of staff in Santa hats.

One of the biggest headaches for landlords and property management companies, is searching for quality home furniture at reasonable prices. Time is a premium for these businesses, so any company that offer a comprehensive one stop service are going to be popular in this industry. Octagon Property Group owner Paul Fielder has recently fitted out one of his properties, a city centre 2 bedroom apartment and he’s finally found that furniture company.

“I didn’t have to lift a finger. It was delivered, taken to each room and assembled in place.” Clearance Zone Direct offer a fully managed service for landlords, from sourcing the right products, to delivering them to a room of choice and assembling them in place so the owner of the property doesn’t have to do anything. Paul added “They even offered a discount because I was buying more then 6 or 7 items, which I couldn’t believe. It was already cheap enough!”

Local People, Local Lives

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014

THE RAW TRUTH Chris Warkup of BeverleyMag has had the pleasure of interviewing Alan Raw the presenter of Radio Humberside’s ‘BBC Introducing’ programme. We discussed the thriving Local Music scene which he promotes through this show and his other various cultural activities.

So first of all tell us about your musical career? “I’ve played in local bands for decades. I started out as a ceilidh band drummer as my family are all Irish musicians and I have played in lots of folk bands for years. In 1979 I joined the Green Ginger Band and have played in the world of folk music ever since.”

20

“In my teens I decided to diversify and got into reggae. I was in a band called Back To Base and made an album with Benjamin Zephaniah. I have been a session drummer since then and played on various albums. These days I play the drums for ‘Endoflevelbaddie’ which is Electro Hip Hop music and headlined both the Freedom Festival and the ‘Humber Street Sesh’. I’m also the drummer in a duo called ‘Verne Duels’ who opened the recent Cornucopia Festival Main Stage. I also drum with world dance fusion group Celtarabia.” “I’m also a member of the ‘World Drumming Network’, which is co-ordinated from Hull . We have members all over the world including 150 drum schools in America . Thanks to the drumming I’ve done I’ve become an endorsed drummer with ‘Rhythm Tech’ & Regaltip and do various drum clinics and lessons” So how did the BBC shows develop? “I’ve organised festivals for several years including one called ‘Impro’ which I ran 6 years in Hull from 1997. The BBC wanted to work with that festival on something called BBC Music Live during 2002 and whilst doing that festival together, they spoke to me and said “you know an awful lot about music and you’re good at introducing people on stage, so would I be interested in doing a radio programme.” I declined and suggested several others much better people, but they had made their decision. Also at that time I was lucky enough to be interviewed by John Peel who had been to Hull for the Sounds of the Suburbs Programme on Channel 4. As part of that programme we had a wander round the docks and talked about being a drummer in Back to Base. With all this going on for me, the BBC said they wanted me to do it. So I agreed to give it a go for six weeks and it is now in the 13th year.” “In 2002 there were just 2 or 3 stations doing similar shows for new music and they were mainly in the south though I was the first one to have an all unsigned play list. Our focus was on the stuff I did anyway which was Community & Youth Arts support and bringing those values into a new music radio show. It wasn’t just about playing the acts it was full of useful information as well. This format has become quite an

influence on other shows. We ended up going from ‘Raw Talent’ in Hull to similar shows in Leeds, Sheffield and York. After John Peel died I helped with the ‘BBC Electric Proms’ which culminated with a tour of the country and a very big event in Camden . We had bands from Hull playing in the Camden show. All this sparked off ‘In Music We Trust’ at the BBC and this was the beginnings of ‘BBC Introducing’. The format of our show has now gone to BBC Introducing shows all over the UK.” So what is the format of the ‘BBC Introducing’ shows? It all revolves around a thing called the ‘BBC Introducing Uploader’ which is the way that people share their music with us and then we share it with the other programmes. It’s through this we receive the new music and we have recommended many artists who’ve had national air-play. A few of them have gone on to play BBC Introducing stages including Leeds and Glastonbury festivals. The uploader and shows can be found at www.bbc.co.uk/introducing. The Shows are broadcast 8-10 pm on Saturday’s. My Leeds show is live but the Hull one is recorded on Thursday nights. Bands are recorded live in the BBC Open Centre with a professional engineer. In our first year we did a ‘Raw Talent sessions album’ but not had the opportunity since. The show includes a full band session and then a live acoustic session from another artist or a local DJ set. Plus many tracks received through the Uploader. We have recorded around 1500 live sessions now. It will be difficult to pin down who are the most exciting bands at the moment, but I could say the best option is to tune in on a Saturday night and have a listen. It’s good to see people playing in more than one band too. It keeps the mix exciting so if one band is better at recording and another at live gigs the musicians get the full experience and explore different styles.

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014 How would you describe the current state of local music around Hull & Beverley? “This area does punch way above its weight. Yorkshire as a whole has always been a hotbed of talent. I’m lucky to have started these shows when I did in 2002 as the talent had been building up and there has been a progression ever since. The festivals in this area have also been fabulous. Well run with people who put their heart into them such as Beverley Folk Festival, Cornucopia, Humber Street Sesh & ReCOGnition Festival. What do you think of the new live music gigs that are starting at Hodgesons in Beverley? I think that you can’t help but have a great line up when you begin to run gigs in Beverley as there is so much talent and things going on. There has also been another folk revival where local artists are in the midst of it. I have noticed lots of alternative folk styles at the moment and I’m seeing this from gigs I attend for ‘Verne Duels’. There is lots of local talent around in this such as Jody Mckenna and Emily Moulton who are as good as anyone who’s headlining a folk festival. You are starting another outlet at the right time as everything is happening right now.” Do you think local music gains the national attention it deserves and do you think 2017 may help? “I’d like to think that it would. It’s a bit ridiculous that with the talent we have had over the past decade that we haven’t had more acts from this region become nationally successful. Not sure why that is, I’ve heard lots of theories why. I’m not certain if ‘2017 City of Culture’ will give it the final push and tip the scales, but it should do. I’ve been shouting about Yorkshire and Hull for long enough at national conferences and when presenting the unsigned stage at Leeds Festival etc . People do know about it through social media too. We are making a big splash in all media platforms nowadays and the level of talent is undeniably high. It is of course entirely possible that Yorkshire is capital of the universe and you can’t get a better place to play than here and we’ll agree to welcome some bands from other parts of the world to join us.”

Local People, Local Lives touch with us via www.creativeandcultural.com especially if you can do a bit of volunteering or want to join The Creative & Cultural Network. We are involved in lots of exciting partnership work with other cities in Holland, Belgium and around the UK. So come and see whats on offer. Is there anyone who inspired you? “John Peel without a doubt. I listened to him as I grew up and I soon learned there was more to life than folk music. I was lucky enough to meet him and get to know him and that just added to his influence. Another inspiration is Benjamin Zephaniah. He writes wise words and he once got me through a difficult flight by talking to me all the way through an electrical storm. And of course my folky family who got me into all this musical stuff.” Do you have any ambitions? “I would love to have time to fix my campervan! It needs rebuilding from scratch and it only gets attention when I need it to get me home from festivals. I want to see Hull City win the premiership, be good at my work and drum more. Only other thing I’d like to do is be a really good dad and that would surpass any other ambitions.” Alan Raw: CEO at The Creative and Cultural Company BBC Introducing Presenter Outreach Coordinator at Higher Rhythm/Music Industry Yorkshire. Curator at POP (Pride Of Place) Artspace Hull UK www.creativeandcultural.com www.alanraw.com

What do you listen to apart from new local music? At home I usually listen to quite avant garde experimental stuff because I’m Chief Exec of an arts charity called The Creative & Cultural Company, with numerous galleries and arts spaces. In those spaces sound art is a really important part of what we want to showcase. We have a lot of performances happen and I get to hear stuff that is quite unique. We’ve also had 5 album launches in our art spaces the last month with ReCOGnition and there’s monthly music nights happening now too. We’ve got various exhibitions and activities happening in the spaces all the time, usually centred around ‘POP’ Pride of Place Art Space at Princes Quay. We have HIP Hull International Photography Gallery opening next door next month which links to HIPfest. Downstairs we have The Glitch with is a digital arts space for people to use and develop their own individual arts. There’s also performance and rehearsal facilities which can be used and lots of Carnival Arts activity. Just get in

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014 Tim Jibson presents in association with

Quiet Riot is coming to Beverley this month. The best local bands from the burgeoning Hull and East Yorkshire music scene will now be able to play in Beverley with the launch of the ‘Quiet Riot’ gigs in Beverley on November. ‘Quiet Riot- The Beverley Alternative’ will be held at Hodgsons Club on Flemingate and a taster event is being held on November 21st featuring the Ming City Rockers, Breeze and the Velvet Dolls (pictured right) as well as music from the ‘Rebellious Jukebox’ DJ’s. The Hull Music scene is now gaining both national and international attention whilst thousands have been able to enjoy seeing these bands at the big local festivals such as Humber Street Sesh or the Freedom Festival during the summer. Quiet Riot offers an opportunity for people within Beverley to enjoy these acts and the bands themselves have an opportunity to reach a new audience. The November gig is a taster event with the aim of establishing a monthly event in 2015. The first gig is headlined by the Ming City Rockers. They have made a massive impression within the local scene though Immingham based. Their album has receive four star review in ‘Q‘ magazine whilst a glowing review in ‘Classic Rock’ magazine described them as “One of 2014’s most exciting new bands and debut albums. A magnificent racket” They have a sound and image reminiscent of the New York Dolls, Ramones, Strokes or Manic Street Preachers and Beverley has probably never played host to a band like this before. If their current showcases in New York go well then they may also become out of reach over the coming months. The Ming City Rockers are supported by Hull guitar band Breeze and Beverley act The Velvet Dolls. Breeze are and indie guitar band who have

played have played on the big local festivals throughout the summer whilst the Velvet Dolls are an all girl, teenage, blues rock band based in Beverley that play a mixture of their own songs and covers. Quiet Riot will aim to offer opportunities for young talent from Beverley and East Yorkshire to play on these gigs alongside more established acts. Quiet Riot – the Beverley Alternative also incorporates a soundtrack provided by the DJ’s of the Rebelious Jukebox evening from Hull. This was established as a night of post-punk tracks but has developed to incorporate wider range of recording so expect everything from the Smiths to the Manic Street Preachers or the Who to the Ramones throughout the night. The tracks will be selected appropriate to the evenings so some weeks this could be more acoustic or folky. We are also aiming o include tracks from the bands playing or planned for following weeks. There is even the possibility of creating a promotional album showcasing the potential performers coming to Beverley over the next 12 months but key to all of these plans is the success of the launch event in November. Quiet Riot is launched at Hodgsons Club on Flemingate on November 21st. This is next door to Beverley Leisure Centre and doors open at 8pm with tickets £4 in advance or £5 on the door. Tickets are available from Minster Records in Beverley and Cherry Burton Costcutter. For more information on Quiet Riot visit https://www.facebook.com/ quietriotbeverley or email quietriotbeverley@yahoo.co.uk

GARDENING

Garden Maintenance for November New Lawns Early November is the last chance for sowing grass seed and just about the best time for laying turf. Good preparation is vital for either: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture. Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Butt the turves together as tightly as you can and fill any gaps with sieved soil. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks.

40

Perennials Plant new ones - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant hardy perennials so their roots have a chance to become established before winter and do ensure you choose plants that are appropriate for your soil type! Divide large ones such as daylilies and peonies once they have finished flowering. Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of organic matter and water generously. Remember some perennials, such as peonies, do not take kindly to being disturbed so tread carefully! Late flowering perennials such as asters are best left until spring for dividing. Cut back those that have died down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring. Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts cause any damage. Support tall flowers - autumn can be windy so make sure any tall flowers are supported. Collect seed heads - collect seed heads from perennials, alpines, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have collected is

BeverleyMag NOVEMBER 2014 fantastically rewarding, but be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry.

Protect alpines from the wet and clear leaves from around them - leaves left around alpines will encourage disease, so clear dead leaves regularly. Whilst alpines, not surprisingly, don’t mind the cold, they do object to excessive wetness, so you may need to put an open ended cloche or something similar over your plants if you have a particularly wet spell of weather. Pots, Containers and Hanging Baskets Be ruthless and turf out summer bedding even if it is still looking good - this will give winter and spring bedding a chance to get roots well down whilst there is still some warmth in the soil. Pansies are more likely to flower through the winter if they are well established before winter temperatures slow them down. Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots, containers and hanging baskets now. Winter colour comes in all shapes and sizes; hardy cyclamen and heathers, dwarf conifers, variegated box, winter pansies, violas and trailing ivies all make wonderful displays. Our favourite combinations include dwarf conifers, bedding, evergreens and winter flowering heathers, with ivies to trail over the edge and a few clusters of bulbs for extra colour in the spring. Try heather, cyclamen & variegated ivy for a stunning look!

GARDENING

Tidy borders Soggy, brown, collapsed plants are an eyesore and deserve nothing better than cutting back and a decent burial on the compost heap. Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease. Clean out the Greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners.

42

For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free! Drain and lag... Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts. Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic

matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year. Planting Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes (see later). Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed. Rake fallen leaves Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

GARDENING

Where have all the starlings gone? You might see big flocks of starlings in your garden at some times of year, but only a few at other times. Ever wondered why? Starlings are sociable and gregarious birds. During autumn and winter, they gather in communal night-time roosts in places such as reedbeds and on buildings.

They spend the day feeding in smaller flocks but as dusk approaches, they fly to these communal roosts. Several thousand birds or even hundreds of thousands of starlings make spectacular scenes whirling around above the roost site. New flocks arrive from all directions all the time, before all the birds finally fly down to roost still chattering away to each other.

PRIVATE • COMMERCIAL • CONTRACT 44 The sudden disappearance of starlings from an area in winter could be caused by a major roost site becoming unavailable to the birds. This forces them to relocate, resulting in the abandonment of some feeding areas. This is often the case in cities, where they are actively discouraged from buildings. While UK starlings are resident, northern European birds migrate here for winter. In addition to the UK breeding population being red-listed, starling numbers are declining across much of Europe, and we are getting fewer migrants than we did a few years ago. As a result, many winter roosts are now much smaller than in the past. The disappearance of starling flocks in spring is a part of the natural cycle. By February, our resident starlings start to move back to their breeding areas and form pairs, breaking away from the winter flocks. Soon after, those that have come to the UK for winter start their migration back north. The same happens with finches, tits and other flocking species as their flocks break up at the start of the breeding season and they pair up. FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. Christmas Countdown Not long now and Christmas will be upon us and the children are already excited! I have a Christmas countdown app on my phone and my daughter, eyes shining, informed me this week exactly how many days, hours and seconds it is until the glorious event! Whilst I then started mentally panicking about how much I had to sort out and get organised, bearing in mind, at the point of writing this, I haven’t started Christmas shopping yet, her delight then made me pause and try to remember Christmas through a child’s eyes. We get so caught up in the pre-Christmas mayhem, what should be a joyous celebration can instead become an incredibly stressful time of year. As parents we want to make sure our children have the best Christmas day ever, full of wonderful memories, knowing that Father Christmas has been as generous as ever! But 46 I think it’s equally important to remember that Christmas isn’t just about presents. It’s more important to spend real, quality time together as a family. Enjoy the magic while you can. It’s these moments that last a lifetime. Juicing for Health Have you ever juiced? I did a 3-day detox and am now determined to keep juicing as part of my normal routine. I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first, wondering if I’d actually be able to stomach drinking beetroot (which I’ve always hated) mixed with five or six other vegetables, but I have been pleasantly surprised! And as well as the obvious health benefits (I’ll definitely be getting more than my 5-a-day!), I’m looking forward to having more energy, better sleep and, of course, losing more than a few pounds. And after watching an incredible documentary called “Super Juice Me”, which followed 8 people with all sorts of chronic illnesses through a 28-day juice programme, I was inspired. At the end of the month they all felt fantastic and more positive about their respective futures than they had in years. Symptoms had reduced, if not disappeared altogether, they were pain-free and even did a 10k walk. It was remarkable and humbling to see them. And I thought if juicing did that for them, how beneficial would it be for those of us who hadn’t been suffering to the same extent.
