BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 Dear Readers, Hello and welcome to the December edition of your Beverley Mag! The excitement and stresses of Christmas are all but upon us as everyone prepares for the festivities. Beverley Minster is set to open its doors again for the annual Christmas Tree Festival and Beverley sees the Christmas Market drawing people from across the region to sample and buy gifts, foods and numerous products from the eager traders. It is a real boost to the local economy in what has been another difficult year for local businesses. I do hope all our readers will be attending and joining in the fun at both events. This month we have some great features as well as the regulars and a very informative interview with the Lesley Wilks who rubs shoulders with the rich and famous and was instrumental in getting Billie & Sam from The Only Way is Essex to open their new boutique (Minnies) in Beverley above her partners shop Bolo in Toll Gavel. We have a light hearted Up Close and Personal interview with the girls on the centre pages too. The new shop saw people turning out in the hundreds to catch a glimpse of the reality show stars and to purchase a bargain in the boutique. I think that this was a good trial run for many of our local shoppers as we will be seeing many new shops opening in the town as the Fleminggate development speeds along. I am amazed at how fast things are now moving on the site and can’t wait to see the finished complex with all the fantastic new shops and businesses that are coming to the town. I sincerely hope that it turns out to be the lifeline that the existing shops need by bringing more shoppers not only to Flemingate but to all parts of Beverley from North Bar through the centre and on to Eastgate. You can win tickets to see The Searchers in Hull in our competition as well 3 other fantastic competitions then you can stretch your brain on the crossword and sudoku puzzels whilst enjoying a mince pie and cuppa. Have a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Kind regards

If your website has little content then it will position you as light weight and maybe not all that serious. You are discovered online: Building online assets means you turn up in search engine results, and can be found on Facebook and other social networks as people share your content.
4
Trust is created online: Multiple views of your brand and content creates online trust. Being seen 3-5 times online takes your trust factor to over 50% accodrding to some online tools.

BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 People buy online: This trend isn’t going away! So what are the digital assets that you should be building and investing in today to remain relevant and continue to grow? 1. Website Websites are your digital platform and the customers gateway to your brand. It maybe a corporate site or an online store or both. it needs to be well branded, easy to use, intuitive and designed for a social web. 2. Blog Blogs are your content hubs and attract loyal readers. It’s role cannot be underestimated in positioning your brand as a thought leader in its industry especially in the B2B space. Technology 3.Social media networks Social networks aren’t strictly an owned asset but rented (you don’t own Facebook or Twitter as you are there on their terms and conditions) but they are are seen by the consumer as part and an also an extension of your owned brand platform.
6
4. Content that you create Content is now a multi-media asset that needs constant investment. It includes articles on blogs, infographics, podcasts, images, videos and more. The challenge is to create the best content possible that will beg to be shared and spread your brand online. This is a constant marketing continuum that needs consistent and persistent feeding. It’s a hungry beast.
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 5. Email list Email is not a shiny new technology toy like the social media platforms, but it is still the primary business communication tool. Your email list needs time and patience to build. It also provides the means to reach your customers and prospects when you want. 6. Mobile Content The rise of high speed wireless and the mobile phone and tablets has made information accessible from anywhere. It can be a mobile app or a mobile responsive website that adapts to any screen size for easy media consumption. Ignoring this can reduce sales for online stores, engagement on blogs and page views on company websites. by Steve Elliott

Ask Sharyn
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014
Dear Sharyn I am a 42 year old woman, very successful career, married and with two lovely children. Even writing this it seems churlish to be complaining but the reality of the situation is that it’s so hard constantly juggling everything and everyone, I often feel like I’m at breaking point but then I give myself a good talking to and carry on. Any ideas? Hi L. This is a common theme in my discussions with clients so please don’t be concerned about sounding churlish. When we concentrate on fixing all the external things around us, we often forget that our experience comes from within us. It’s important that at some point in your day you find time to connect with the quiet you inside yourself. Take something that you do each day regularly, say boiling the kettle, showering or cleaning your teeth. During the time this takes rather than thinking about the next thing on your job list, let your mind wonder, day dream, perhaps scan your body to see how you are feeling, say ‘thank you’ for the things you are grateful for. That moment of quiet a few times a day will help you find the space between the busyness and it is here that we tap into true inspiration.

Hello Sharyn My boss is an **@!@ He’s making my work life unbearable and I want to move on. The thing is my wife is on maternity leave so I need the stability of a known entity. Any tips on how to deal with him? Hi P. What if your boss could behave any which way he liked and it simply didn’t effect you? What if you could move on and the job you went to had more stability? A tall order right? Well not necessarily. We are all living in the feeling of our thoughts. Now I know that can sound a bit flaky, but take a moment to reflect on it and you’ll see that it’s true. We don’t all have the same response to our experiences of life so it’s not the experience itself that is inherently good or bad it’s our thinking around it. Take changing your job. For some people that would be a great adventure, for others a massive risk. The physical circumstances are the same but the thoughts around it are different. Take your boss and his behaviour, what if instead of getting involved in your thoughts of “No matter what I do it’s never good enough”, “Who does he think he is?”, “No way, that will never work” you simply say to yourself “So what? I’ll do the best I can”, “So what? he is who he is”, “So what? let’s give it a go”? Play with this a little and see what actually happens, it’s usually not as bad as you think! With warm regards

Countdown to Christmas
Christmas Facts Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker, Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna, and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. Born in Patara (in modernday Turkey), he is the world’s most popular non-Biblical saint, and artists have portrayed him more often than any other saint except Mary. He is the patron saint of banking, pawnbroking, pirating, butchery, sailing, thievery, orphans, royalty, and New York City. 10 Puritan Oliver Cromwell outlawed Christmas celebrations and carols in England from 1649-1660. The only celebrations allowed were sermons and prayers. Christmas is a contraction of “Christ’s Mass,” which is derived from the Old English Cristes mæsse (first recorded in 1038). The letter “X” in Greek is the first letter of Christ, and “Xmas” has been used as an abbreviation for Christmas since the mid 1500s.
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25-January 6). Some scholars suggest that the word yule means “revolution” or “wheel,” which symbolises the cyclical return of the sun. A burning log or its charred remains is said to offer health, fertility, and luck as well as the ability to ward off evil spirits. Evergreens (from the Old English word aefie meaning “always” and gowan meaning “to grow”) have been symbols of eternal life and rebirth since ancient times. The pagan use and worship of evergreen boughs and trees has evolved into the Christianised Christmas tree.
Because of their pagan associations, both the holly (associated with the masculine principle) and the ivy (the feminine) and other green boughs in home decoration were banned by the sixth-century Christian Council of Braga. Ancient peoples, such as the Druids, considered mistletoe sacred because it remains green and bears fruit during the winter when all other plants appear to die. Druids would cut the plant with golden sickles and never let it touch the ground. They thought it had the power to cure infertility and nervous diseases and to ward off evil. UP CYCLE SUCCESS
Formed in April 2014, Gallery 1984 are enjoying their first year producing handmade wooden pieces for the home and garden. Made from 100% reclaimed wood, the products are proving to be popular, ‘upcycling’ is a huge craze currently and is showing no signs of slowing. “I guess it was Rich who came about the idea, after making a few pieces for his own home, he persuaded me that this kind of thing was really popular” remarked co-owner Ollie. After a little research and the discussions between the two lads they decided to set up in April 2014. “We initially started it out as a bit of a hobby without spending over the odds on machinery and tools” Rich recalls. “It soon became apparent that some of the items were already attracting interest from customers so we continued to assemble plenty of stock and pencilled in a few fairs to see how the products would sell to the public” added Rich.
14
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 “We are always looking for new products to assemble and the business is growing week by week; it’s an exciting time especially with Christmas approaching and the orders rolling in” remarked Ollie. “We are both very determined to ensure the business keeps growing but we are under no illusions it will take a lot of hard work” added Ollie. Based in East Yorkshire, Gallery 1984 have ventured across Yorkshire promoting the business at events such as the Yorkshire Show, Driffield Show and Beverley Vintage & Retro Fair as well as many others, “We are exploring how to promote the business to as wide an audience as possible and these events are great for networking and meeting new customers; without the support of Dodds (based in Bainton) and DMC Ltd some of these events wouldn’t have been possible so we are thankful to them and all the support we have received so far from various people” Ollie went on to add. Countdown to Christmas
I’m dreaming of a tight Christmas…
It’s that time of year when the mounting hope for snow reaches its peak (if you’re under the age of ten, that is). But what with the pressure to make the presents mount up too, we’ve compiled some tips on how to save the pennies for that snow-induced heating bill... and a merry Christmas all round! 1. Set yourself a budget: It’s tempting to ‘collect bits’ as and when you see them, but people tend to overspend as they forget what they’ve bought. Writing a list and setting aside a couple of dates on which to go Christmas-shopping will also help you stick to your budget. 2. Be honest with your friends: Tell them it’s been a tough year and suggest that, instead of presents, you all have a nice meal together where each person brings a dish. Quality time together is something money can’t 16 buy.
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 whilst looking like you’ve put in loads of effort! It’s also a great activity to involve the kids in. 9. Recycle an outfit: Rather than splashing out on a new party dress, customise an old one: remove sleeves, make it shorter, add a belt and some sequins... Or swap with a friend; that way you’ll have something new without spending a penny. 10. Make candles: Reuse leftover candles and tea lights to melt into new ones for thoughtful (and cheap!) presents or to adorn the house. You can make them even prettier with ribbon or by adding glitter to the wax. If you’re struggling with debt or have money worries, check out capuk.org or call 0800 328 006 for more information; you don’t need to face it alone.
3. Buy shared presents: If you have several children of similar age, consider buying a bigger present that they can all enjoy. And if you buy second-hand you could save hundreds of pounds. 4. Food saving stamps: In the lead up to Christmas, buying saving stamps are a great way to save up for your festive food. 5. Avoid the post box: Why not save on stamps by hand-delivering cards to people in your area? Remember to keep the ones you get to recycle into handmade cards for next year. 6. Try own brand: Supermarkets have come a long way in making own brand food that tastes as good as the named brands, and it’s plenty cheaper. 7. Agree to buy just for the kids: Money is tight for everyone at the moment so most people you know will appreciate a deal like this. 8. Make chocolate truffles: These are quick, easy, and can be mass-produced To contact BEVERLEYMAG please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470

‘A’ List Stars & Chip Spice
This month BeverleyMag catches up with local business woman and beautician to the stars, Lesley Wilks.
BM: Where do you live? I live on Kingswood in Hull after moving here some 23 years ago from Sunderland so technically I have more of a Yorkshire passport than a North Eastern one!
18
BM: Tell us about your family I have a wonderful husband, Steve who I have been with for 25 years who co-owns Bolo boutiques, we make such a great team as I am a very creative, ambitious person and he is very much a realist yet an incredible businessman so we bounce off each other really well. We have 2 sons Jordan 19, and Cody 14 so are kept extremely busy as a family. It’s a bit of a joke in our family as in my industry having a daughter into girly things would be amazing, and I am very often outnumbered with all the football and boy chat, (even the family dog is a male!) but I just borrow my friends and sisters girls when I need a break!
maintaining it due to work pressures, however I do try!
BM: What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time (which isn’t that often) I love to go and visit my family and friends in the North East and have a night out up there, as well as catching up with friends here. These days a cosy night in watching TV with a take away is often a luxury! I sometimes go to the gym but admittedly am really bad at
BM: What is your favorite thing about Beverley? My favourite thing about Beverley has to be ‘chip spice”! When I moved here I couldn’t believe the different sayings and how things differed from the North East. My son’s friend has set up a company ‘SPICE IT’ which at 18 years old I think is unbelievable to have that vision and tap into a market that could become national-when I am
BM: Name the one thing you couldn’t live without ? I couldn’t live without my husband or boys not to sound too corny, but I really couldn’t! They are my rock. Materialistically it has to be my mobile as I rely on it so much for my job! (oh and can I say lip gloss as well!?)

Local People, Local Lives working with celebrities we always have a banter about chip spice! They haven’t a clue and we forget it’s a Hull & Beverley thing! BM: We already know your business is based within the beauty industry but tell a little more about the work you do and how you got started? I specialise in Permanent Make up, Make up and Specialist Beauty Treatments such as an age reversal facial called A Lift, HD brows and LVL lashes. I wanted to do treatments for my clients that weren’t just like a regular salon, which is why I would rather focus on a few and be great at it rather than average in everything! My journey in this industry began when I was 14 and worked in a local salon back home on a Saturday for £7 a day! I attended college to do both hair and beauty and had a huge passion for this as well as make up. I then went on to work as a stylist for a large company for a while before landing my dream job with Schwarzkopf Professional. Looking after large salon groups from Scotland to Manchester I really enjoyed mentoring and building the business aspect of this for salons but equally missed being in the salon myself. After 10 very successful years with a great company and after having Jordan I decided to leave Schwarzkopf to be able to fulfill my ultimate dream of opening my own salon – this is when in Dec 1999 Lloyds hair was born! After quickly outgrowing the salon Steve and I wanted to have
20
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 our own beauty alongside the hair and after a huge project of planning etc. we opened Colour Lounge in April 2013. Selling this last year was the turning point in my career as having doing some Business development for a beauty company Nouveau Beauty Group which have brands such as HD brows, Lashes, A Lift and ultimately Karen Betts and her Nouveau Contour permanent make up, I decided I wanted to go back to doing what I love best instead of running and owning a busy salon. This was the change in my life that has been the biggest but most satisfying for me as an individual and where I am today! BM: What’s the best thing about your job? The favourite part of my job is when I give someone their confidence back or make them feel special for even an hour! My permanent make up is an integral part of this and I love the way this can completely change someone’s life for them! Working from a small, private studio I love the fact that clients can come and feel comfortable with me and not have to worry about how they look or who sees them when they leave! It’s their little

Local People, Local Lives personal haven for a while! BM: You work with some celebrity clients, are you able to tell us who and how you met them? I met most of my celebrities by recommendation from others and by me being really normal and approachable with them I guess! Networking is a great thing and I always say ‘never burn your bridges with people’- if you are nice and professional with them, they are to you! All the celebrities I do now have become more like friends but that’s mainly due to the fact that I would always respect their privacy and trust as I would any client I do! My work now sees me travelling up and down the country doing treatments on celebrities such as most recently Melanie Sykes just before she went into the jungle, Kerry Katona and her wedding, Natasha Hamilton, Liz McClarlon, Jorgie Porter , Sam and Billie Faiers and the Hollyoaks cast to name but a few. more local events now I have a settled base here again, so clients know what I do. I have recently qualified in my Masters HD brows which is the highest level you can offer so I am extremely excited about being able to offer that now to my clients, knowing that I am constantly investing in training myself! I have also set up a VIP glam squad wedding and events team alongside the very talented hairstylist Samuel Johnson. Clients can hire us on a daily rate for this and we can create a ‘pop up ‘ style salon offering everything with top people in the industry. This is what we did for Kerry at her wedding and it went down a treat! BM: If you were not doing what you do now, what would you like to do? BM: What are your plans for the future for your business? My plans for the future are to build up the clinic side of my permanent make up. I will always work from my base in Hull for my clients here, but I have started to do a few clinics one day a month in the North East, Leeds and Huddersfield. I have been asked to do some more in salons further south but that will be a natural progression. As of now clients have found me but I would love to do

Escape the winter blues.. MARION A few days away can be a great tonic during our darker, colder, shorter days. This issue I will share with you a few ideas for a winter getaway. City breaks always offer something to see & do year round. Winter often offers less crowded sightseeing and a more comfortable temperature for making the most of the sights. Italy is a great example… Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Milan make a great escape as does Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast. Spanish cities I suggest, Jerez, the temperature would be lovely for following the Sherry trail plus Seville, Malaga, Barcelona and Alicante should not be dismissed. Further afield having just returned from Miami & Key West I can highly recommend a two centre holiday. You can mix beach & culture along with good food and a vibrant nightlife should you desire. Key West is the most southern point in the United states and just over 3 hours drive from Miami, of course you can take public transport should you wish as once in Key West it is easy to get around by foot or perhaps bicycle as we did. There are a number of museums and historical points but you must be in Mallory Square & join the party atmosphere at sunset.
Miami offers you the beach and the city, I can understand why so many folk move to live down here the climate is wonderful. The hop on hop off bus offers 3 loops and takes you to all parts of the area, including the lovely suburb of Coral Gables renowned South Beach and the northern arty part of the city where Banksey could have a field day! Here again public transport it not a problem. They have a sky train running above the city plus trolley buses. Always popular for a short winter break is Dubai & Abu Dhabi, just a 7 hour flight away you can even fit in a long weekend. My last visit I flew out Friday came back late Monday just in time for work on Tuesday. There are great shopping opportunities and it is a golfers paradise, although green fees are not so cheap. If you do not fly these days don’t despair, southern England offers a little more daylight plus escapes the chilly wind of our east coast. Whilst a hop over on the ferry can be a cheap & cheerful change of scenery at this time of the year. Remember, booking with an agent does not cost you any more. We look forward to hearing from you whenever you require travel arrangements

Property asking prices fall as keen sellers seek winter buyers. Rightmove says high prices and new mortgage lending rules have put a temporary brake on the ‘mini-boom’
Homeowners keen to attract buyers in the quieter winter months are asking less for the properties than those that came onto the market in October, as high prices and new mortgage lending rules have put a temporary brake on the “mini-boom” in the housing market, Rightmove said on Monday. Figures from the property website showed that asking prices for homes coming onto the market in November were down 1.7% on October, while the number of homes for sale dropped to a seasonal low. Sellers typically drop asking prices in the lead up to Christmas but this year’s November asking price drop, which shaves £4,542 off the average property price bringing it to £267,127, is the smallest in five years. The annual rate of house price
growth to November this year is still up at 8.5% after eight out of the last 12 months showed property price increases. “Selling is more difficult than it was earlier in the year, though the mini-boom experienced by much of the country has hit the pause rather than the stop button,” said Miles Shipside, Rightmove director and housing market. “Underlying demand remains strong but has been muted by higher prices stretching affordability at the same time as the ability to borrow more to fund those higher prices has been curtailed by tighter mortgage lending criteria.” However, buyers looking for a new home are not exactly

spoilt for choice. The average number of properties per estate agency branch is at historically low levels with an average of 60 properties for sale. This is the lowest number ever recorded at this time of year, according to Rightmove. Lack of property choice has helped fuel this year’s upwards price pressure and the website said supply shortages in some parts of the country could push prices up again in 2015. This month new listings on the property portal were down 1% on the same period last year and 15% on last month. The situation is unlikely to improve before the year end as sellers wait until after Christmas to market their home. However, some new buyers may start the traditional New Year search for property as early as Christmas Day this year, speculated Shipside, due to the lack of affordable homes on the market. In 2013, the site registered more than 500,000 visits on Christmas day, and more than 1.3m on Boxing day. The annual rate of house price growth reported by Rightmove, which looks at sale prices, is roughly in line with that of Britain’s biggest building, Nationwide, which records prices once the sale has been agreed. It recently reported that the annual rate of house price growth slowed to 9% in October from 9.4% in September and said that it expected
things to continue in the same direction. “Some forward-looking indicators, such as new buyer inquiries, suggest that activity may soften further in the near term, especially in London,” said Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist. The picture is also greatly varied across the country. Prices are up 0.8% in London compared with last month, contributing to a 16.2% rise in the capital, acording to Rightmove. This compares to a 2.6% monthly price fall in Wales, meaning prices are up just over 1% annually. The average house price in Wales is now £166,992 compared to London’s £601,180.

Six ways to increase the value of your home Whether you’re thinking of selling soon or at some point in the future, it’s worth considering how some improvements can increase the value of your home. There are some changes that will help to increase the price and give you a better chance of selling. However, other improvements could cost more than they add or even detract from the value of a property. Installing double glazing Everyone likes to have a nice cosy home and good quality double glazing will make a property more attractive. You need to ensure that you choose the right type of windows for the specific property, as otherwise you could put buyers off. For example, period homes should have wooden frames as opposed to plastic ones. The price of installation can be up to £20,000, depending on the size of the property, but it could increase the value by 10%. Improve your broadband speed Having a fast broadband service is now seen as
32
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 an essential item by many home buyers. Not all properties can benefit from superfast fibre optic broadband. If the reception in your area is too slow you can use satellite broadband simply by having a dish installed. Packages start from around £17 a month depending on your requirements, but having access to this service could add 5 to 10% to the value of your home. Tidy up outside First impressions are crucial when selling a property and it’s quick and easy to make some improvements. These don’t have to be costly and simply making sure the grass is cut or the hedges are trimmed can help. Other work you should consider includes re-rendering the brickwork, having the roof retiled or painting the exterior woodwork. Smartening up the outside of your house could be a simple way of increasing the value by as much as 10%.

House & Home Add an en-suite Many buyers are now looking for ensuite or additional bathrooms, especially if the property has four or more bedrooms. If you’ve already got an en-suite or there’s not enough room, you could add some luxury touches to the existing layout. By fitting new taps, a good quality shower and screen or a heated towel rail you could improve the attractiveness of the bathrooms. Having a brand new bathroom installed could cost up to £20,000, but you should see an increase in value of up to 10%.
34
Improve the outdoor space Outdoor areas are becoming increasingly important for homeowners and can make a sale. People want to feel that the garden is part of the home, so fitting new doors to open up the connecting space would be a beneficial improvement. If you can’t do this, then cutting down any excessive trees will help to
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 increase the amount of light. Paying to have your trees cut down will cost around £300 or a complete garden redesign could be up to £15,000. However, garden improvements will add between 5 and 10% to the value. A New Fireplace An outdated fireplace will detract from a stylish home and installing a new one could increase the asking price by 5%. A remotecontrolled fireplace will cost between £3,000 and £5,000, but means a buyer could switch it on from anywhere in the room. Another good improvement would be to fit a wood burner. These cost around £2,500, but are extremely fuel efficient. It’s important to consider your home improvements carefully, rather than jumping straight in. You don’t want to end up spending more on the work than you are adding to the value.

How to make your business work for you in 2015
Over the years that I have been working with Entrepreneurs and business owners I have noticed that they have many traits that they bring to their life and work: the ability to thrive independently, discipline in managing personal freedom and self-made competitiveness.
Get a proper plan in place and I’m not talking about one of those business plans that you write for the bank and stick in a draw to never look at again. I’m talking about a plan that is focused on what actions you are going to take to actually move your business forward.
Yet even among the most savvy and driven of these business owners, there is a tendency to focus too much on the business tasks at hand and what is happening that minute or day. As I like to say, working IN their business rather than ON their business. This means that they are leaving their business growth to chance rather than deliberately having a strategy to grow. So as this issue is all about New year, New You and in this case New Business, I thought I would share with you the single best strategy you could use to grow in 2015.
Once you have decided what you actually want your business to achieve this year, what Profit, what turnover, how much you are going to put in your personal bank account then your plan just needs to cover three basic areas:-
will be assured.
a) Your marketing and sales plan, which is all about getting and keeping customers. For example, how can you get more customers, how can you get them to stay longer and pay you more. Address these and your success Continued on page 38

Supporting Local Business b) An Operations Plan, which is all about what impact more customers and transactions will have on my business, will you need more staff, new machinery etc? c) A Finance Plan e.g. will the change in your operations need more cash in the short term. What will the cashflow look like over the coming year, will you be able to take more cash out of the business? The very act of writing out your plan forces you to review everything: your value proposition, marketing activities, operations plan and financial plan. You’ll end up spotting connections you otherwise would have missed. For example, if your marketing plan projects 10,000 customers by the end of the year and your staffing plan provides for two salespeople, that forces you to ask: How can two salespeople generate 10,000 customers? The answer might lead you to conclude that forming partnerships, targeting distributors and concentrating on bulk sales to large companies may be your best tactics.

BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 ACTION, you’ve done the hard work of planning the work, so now work the plan and stick to it. I know that this doesn’t really sound cutting edge but its a simple fact that most business owners operate on a day to day basis and never really do the proper thinking and planning that would really make their business move forward. GARDENING
December and January Gardening
Pots for your patio We tend not to venture into the garden so much during the darker winter months, so it’s a great idea to plant up containers to put near the front door or on the patio, where you can see them from the window. Most garden centres have plenty of plants to choose from. Christmas rose or Helleborus niger has attractive white cup-shaped flowers. It could be teamed with Skimmia reevesiana, with its festive bright red berries. Add bright red mini cyclamen and you’ve really got Christmas in a pot – gorgeous! Containers don’t have to be filled with flowering plants. A pot or group of pots planted with a mixture of different coloured foliage can be just as attractive. And they don’t need much maintenance to keep them looking good. Euphorbia, Heuchera, Euonymus and trailing ivy are just a few with fantastic foliage. Have a browse round local garden centres for inspiration.
42 You could also create a planter for the
kitchen with a selection of herbs, making it easy to add fresh flavours to your cooking. Woody planting Now is the time for woody planting, which is trees and shrubs, including soft fruit and top fruit. Getting them in before Christmas is ideal, to avoid the coldest weather and so the roots can settle in before spring. Dig manure or compost into your planting hole. Firm in the shrub so it doesn’t move about in strong winds. Mulch once the soil is moist, and before frost gets into the ground. Mulching provides a protective eiderdown over the winter and prevents soil erosion and leaching of nutrients. Landscape bark, mushroom compost, leaf mould and manure are great soil
BeverleyMag DECEMBER 2014 improvers – stock up on some bags from the garden centre. Jobs for December & January You can still enjoy the garden even though it’s December. The rain in November has made the soil easy to work, so enjoy some fresh air while you get planting or digging. In wind-prone areas, roses can be reduced in height by a third to prevent the wind catching them. Buddleia, clematis, wisteria and anything tender can be left until the end of winter to avoid dieback in hard frosts. You can now winter prune fruit. Stone fruit shouldn’t be pruned in winter as the sap is being drawn back into the trees. Leave the pruning of buddleia, clematis, wisteria and anything potentially tender until the end of winter to avoid die-back in hard frosts. Roses can be reduced in height by a third to prevent the wind catching them, and then reprune in March. Don’t forget your feathered friends over the festive season. Remember to leave out an unfrozen water supply and high energy food. Use natural decorations indoors, including wreaths and table decorations to make your home extra-special this festive season. Choose a potted Christmas tree and keep it beside your front door, strung with lights. Damage limitation and garden maintenance When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths of moss and leaves. After heavy snowfall, gently brush snow off conifers and hedges to stop the weight forcing them apart. If you have a chance, pack the branches of tender trees and shrubs with straw and secure with fleece to protect them from the cold; thick dry mulches will also protect roots from freezing conditions. If you haven’t already done this, lay old carpeting or something similar over cold frames to protect them and check the insulation in

greenhouses and that heaters are working properly. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough to brave the elements, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels! When soil conditions allow, continue to dig over beds and borders, incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Bulbs, flowers and containers Sow sweet peas under cover to give you a head start in the spring. Raise any containers not already on feet or bricks to protect them from the cold and lag them with bubble wrap or straw and hessian; even hardy plants need protection in really cold weather. Tucking them all close together in a sheltered spot by the house is another useful ploy. Don’t allow containers under cover to dry out; and check that evergreens outside haven’t got dry while pots have been frozen.

Pick over winter pansies and violas, removing leaves with mildew or black spots on them, getting rid of any badly affected plants altogether. Replace these with lovely new plants next month. Remove debris regularly to prevent pests from taking up residence. Houseplants To keep your Christmas houseplants looking in top condition, follow these simple guidelines... Poinsettias, phalaenopsis and Christmas cacti like to be warm, although not blasted with heat on top of radiators and the like! Poinsettias will reward exposure to cold or draughts with almost certain death, so treat them with kid gloves. Beware overwatering any of them. Feed poinsettias weekly, the others fortnightly. Cyclamen, azaleas and cymbidium orchids - prefer cooler conditions and like to be moist, though not overwatered. Dunk them in a bowl of water until the pot feels heavy and allow to drain before replacing on a saucer of gravel. Pinch faded cyclamen flowers at the base of the stem and remove spent azalea flowers very carefully the new buds are often just below the old ones.
Happy gardening and merry Christmas!

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. New Year’s Resolutions – worth it or a waste of time? Well, we’ve been talking about Christmas since September, so why not start planning New Year’s resolutions now?!! Or perhaps you think they’re a waste of time – fun to make but too hard to maintain? Here’s some food for thought! I thought I’d share some rather alarming figures about how we eat and drink to excess during the festive season!
According to research, on average British adults consume 7,000 calories on Christmas Day, which is more than double 46 the male and triple the female recommended daily intake. And by 2pm on the 25th, when most of us have reached our usual limit, many go even further by adding more cake, brandy butter and alcohol, or trifle in my case!! Armed with these statistics, YouGov did a poll last year and found, unsurprisingly, that most people intended to make resolutions about eating more healthily and doing more exercise. I mean we all know how busy the gym is in January!! But for those of you who think resolutions are a load of bunkum, I don’t agree. I think it’s always worth starting the year with good intentions - but don’t set out to fail. Rather than a grandiose gesture, choose one modest, manageable goal that you can build on throughout the year. For instance, if you want to lose weight and improve your health, you could stop snacking between meals (and stop eating that bar of chocolate after lunch that you desperately need to get you through the afternoon!), decide to take a walk three times a week or use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift. Set out to succeed and plan a reward so that it gives you something to look forward to! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
