BeverleyMag August 2015 Dear Readers Welcome to the August edition of your Beverley Mag. In this month’s edition we have our Travel Feature which has some great ideas for holidays from Marion Owen and Andrew Earle as well as advice on sun burn, covering both avoidance and treatment. I’m not too sure if I will catch the sun this summer here in Beverley as we seem to be having a real mixed bag on the weather front with rain, cloud and sun all in the same day!! We have tickets to give away for Florence and The Machine show at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena in our competition. We have a very interesting and empowering article about those dreaded Stretch Marks that blight so many women/mothers in the ‘My Story’ feature on page 28 from one of our readers in Leconfield. We also have a great article about unplugging your technology devices and recharging your own batteries. Go on! Give it a go! I Know that I certainly need to start unplugging and spending some uninterrupted quality time with my family and friends. Also, if you are looking for a little inspiration on the stress front and how to deal with certain situations you should read the article on page 36. The gardening feature is a bumper six pages of great advice and fantastic traders and professionals that can help you with landscaping, lawns, sheds, groundworks, fencing and most other services or products that you could wish for to create your own tranquil green oasis to escape to. Finally, we would really like to hear from our younger readers on what they do in their spare time in Beverley, what amenities they would like to see in Beverley and information about any groups or clubs they are involved in. Just email me us at: ask@ beverleymag.co.uk and we will publish some of your comments. Kind regards

The Fox Hunting Debate The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has said he believes in the “freedom to hunt” and wants fox hunting legalised. He has said he has “always been a strong supporter of country sports” and that “it is [his] firm belief that people should have the freedom to hunt”. After their majority win in the election on 7th May 2015, the Conservatives scheduled a parliamentary vote on repealing the fox hunting ban on 15th July 2015.

4

Graham Stuart our local MP had this to say about the proposed vote on social media: “The vote on 15 July is not to repeal The Hunting Act 2004. It will remain the case that it is illegal to hunt foxes with dogs. The vote will give MPs the opportunity to amend the provisions of exempt hunting to allow farmers and gamekeepers to decide, based on the terrain and other factors, if it is appropriate to use more than two dogs to flush out foxes in order to shoot them for reasons such as protecting livestock or relieving the suffering of a diseased or injured animal. I believe this is an entirely sensible set of proposals that will make the exemptions in the Hunting Act more workable and therefore I will be voting in favour of them”.

The Verdict On the 14th July The Government axed the vote to water down the ban on fox hunting to avoid an embarrassing House of Commons defeat. This was in the face of overwhelming pressure from the public, and with SNP MPs pledging to vote down the amendment, the government were forced into a humiliating climbdown, cancelling the vote altogether. Minding the Minster

Minster Falcons

It’s been a rather splendid couple of months for wildlife lovers near Beverley Minster since a pair of Peregrine Falcons had some chicks. For those of you who missed the media coverage that this piece of news received when the outside world learned about the happy event, we have a family nesting high up in one of our West End towers, enjoying the fact that it’s a very cliff-like structure, but without the irritation of coastal winds and waves battering their home at all hours of day and night. They don’t seem to mind the ringing of our bells every quarter-hour and, in fact, seem to be positively thriving.

6

We’ve got used to the piercing cries of the parents as they collect food for their offspring and quite a few people stop by on a regular basis, binoculars around their necks, hoping for their daily fix of these beautiful creatures.

I understand there have been a few ruffled feathers, so to speak, among individuals who complain that their presence is upsetting the local pigeon population but, on a personal level, I think the world would be a better place with a few more peregrines and a few less pigeons. This month, there is a rare opportunity to get closer to these creatures when we open the North Tower for visitors to climb. It’s always popular, this annual chance to get to the very top of one of our 50 metretall bookends, and the presence of the falcons this year is an added bonus. The tours begin at 10.30am on Bank Holiday Monday (August 31st) and cost £10 each, with accompanied under 16’s going free. We can’t guarantee the falcons will be at home, but if you’re interested just call the virgers on 01482 882128 and we’ll give you the latest news. By Neil Pickford, Assistant Virger

YEAR END PERFORMANCE REVIEW SEES COUNCIL CONTINUE TO PERFORM HIGHLY East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet has welcomed a report outlining how the authority has performed in 2014/15. Overall, the council has performed well against the indicators set out in its rigorous Local Performance Framework. At year end, 80 per cent of indicators were performing on or above their target. Performance of service areas is monitored to reflect the council’s corporate priorities, which include: • Maximising potential – working with others to support sustainable economic growth and strong communities, the East Riding is a great place to invest in, live, work and visit. • Promoting health, wellbeing and independence – helping people to stay healthy, strong and fit for the future. • Supporting vulnerable people, reducing inequalities – supporting in times of need, protecting from harm and improving the quality of life.

• Valuing our environment – responding to climate change, developing our infrastructure and safeguarding our heritage. • Reducing costs, raising performance – developing our workforce and working with partners to provide excellent service, effective governance and value for money. Indicators cover a whole host of services the council provides, with some being measured against national local government standards. Councillor Jackie Cracknell, cabinet portfolio holder for corporate services and performance at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This report is excellent news for our residents and highlights the importance of effective performance management at a time when budgets are reducing. “The council has a good track record for service delivery and, through consultation with local communities, understands the value our residents place in having access to quality services. “By regularly reviewing our performance, both locally and nationally, the council can ensure it is offering the best possible service to residents and is well-placed to deal with any new challenges.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey areas

& William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of

people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

VOLUNTEERING PROJECT AT CHILDREN’S CENTRE Nearly 50 pupils at Longcroft School and Sixth Form College took part in a youth volunteering project at Beverley Children’s Centre. The Year 8 students helped to spruce up outdoor areas at the centre and adjoining youth and family support service building. The youngsters carried out a variety of tasks, that included gardening, painting seating and clearing a patio area. East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s waste and recycling team helped out by supplying brown garden sacks and collecting the garden waste. The clear-up event was held as part of the ‘Volunteen’ project run by East Riding volunteering group ERVAS. The project is funded by the National Lottery to encourage volunteering among young

people aged from 11 to 25 years. Children’s centre leader Leone Deverson said: “We are very grateful to the Longcroft students for coming along to the centre to help out.” Kim Adams, leader of Longcroft’s Year 8, said: “The students worked incredibly hard all day and had smiles on their faces throughout. They were a credit to the school and showed how young people really do care about their communities. All the young people who took part should be very proud of their hard work.”

‘WATER WORKS’ : BRAND NEW EXHIBITION COMES TO BEVERLEY ART GALLERY A fascinating new exhibition - ‘Water Works’ - opens in Beverley Art Gallery on Saturday 25 July, and runs through to Saturday 5 September. Members of The Ebor Group of artists have taken their inspiration for this exhibition from a range of seascapes and riverscapes found among the East Riding Museum’s Collection. The various forms of media used in the exhibition include embroidery and felting, as well as the use of found objects and stained glass techniques, creating a body of work that is challenging and exciting. The Ebor Group is a group of artists formed in 1996 with the aim of ‘developing personal work’. Based in York, the group has exhibited widely in the North of England, and is mentored by the professional artist Hilary Bower. Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said: “The East Riding of Yorkshire is renowned for its stunning beaches and coastlines, so it’s wonderful to be showcasing artwork to embrace this beautiful feature of our county. I hope that lots of people will want to come and see what promises to be a fascinating exhibition.”

Heart & Sole: Whittaker’s Shoe Repairers Serves Beverley Customers for 70 Years next year! Laurie Whittaker (pictured below) acquired the shop in 1946. He came from a family of shoe repairers having worked with his father and brothers before being called up to fight in the war.

Stephen left Whittaker’s in 2006 and we were joined by Sean Pashley (pictured below) who is still with us up to date. We are a Traditional shoe repairers also known as “Cobblers” Most modern shoes are of a composition and are stuck on but we still do a lot of leather work and stitch the soles on where required. We also repair Riding and Polo boots and do stitching to bags etc and replace zips and velcro.

He worked on his own for several years. As trade increased his son David used to help, first on Saturday mornings, then after school and during the school holidays.

16

David (pictured bottom) left school in 1960 aged 15 and worked full time with his father. In the 1980’s Laurie’s brother Frank worked in the shop as well. In the early 90’s Laurie and his brother retired through ill health so Laurie’s grandson Stephen joined David. Those were the golden years in the repair trade as people at that time bought good shoes and had them repaired. As the British shoe industry declined owing to cheaper footwear coming in from abroad so trade quietened off we decided to stock and cut keys which helped. Unfortunately we are turning into a throw away society but luckily for us quite a few people still buy good shoes and have them repaired.

The Beverley Dresser Re-Launches in New Hands BeverleyMag asked new owner Mandy to tell us in her own words about the re-launch of one of Beverley’s most popular shops. I re-launched The Beverley Dresser on 1/7/15. I would like to say a huge thank you to Susan Eldvidge who successfully ran the shop for the last sixteen years. She had a loyal customer following and I’m thrilled at the support her old customers are giving me, along with encouragement & suggestions, to progress the business. I would like to work with regular customers to discuss ideas and how and what they expect from the shop. It is my aim to offer a good price for those selling their pre-loved items and offer a fair price to customers who buy and give everyone an opportunity to buy a designer item @ a fraction of a new price. I’d like to offer a whole service, giving advice if needed, and an honest opinion of whether an item suits ect. The shop also offers an expert seamstress service, Cathy, should any item need altering.

There is an amazing selection of hats, fascinators & hatinators, many of which are bespoke pieces and are for Hire & some to buy. Sun Burn Advice

What Really Causes a Sunburn (and How to Treat It Fast!) With the summer sun beating down, spending quality time outside - whether you’re working outside or holidaying - is a given. And though you likely know all the rules about wearing sunscreen, sometimes you just forget. Sunburn is no fun and can be dangerous, but there are ways to alleviate the pain and soothe the burn.

And this may come as no surprise, but it’s not the heat that’s causing that burn. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light does the damage. When exposed to UV rays from the sun, your skin accelerates the production of melanin, a substance that gives pigment to your skin and gives you your natural colour. That melanin in overdrive is what gives you a tan. And that tan is your body’s natural sunblocker and the only defence you naturally have against the sun.

But the melanin can only do so much. How much melanin your body can produce is determined by genetics, and most people don’t produce enough to protect the skin well. The eventual result is a sunburn. But it goes beyond red skin and weird tan lines. In some cases, blisters can form, and the skin may even swell, a condition called edema. In more severe situations, sun poisoning a.k.a. polymorphic light eruption can occur. Symptoms of this type sun allergy include tiny red bumps or patches of red skin, blisters, hives, and even bleeding. Studies have shown that getting burned regularly can significantly increase a person’s risk of developing skin cancer later in life. In particular, one study found that women who got five or more blistering sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 were at an 80 percent increased risk Continued on Page 22

Travel Feature

Package Holidays ...

You may have seen me recently on the TV regarding peak season holiday prices. Regardless of the kids being on holiday, July & August for the Northern Hemisphere will always be more expensive being the peak season for a sunny holiday. The same with skiing at the start of the season prices are low and you run the risk of poor snow conditions. The peak of the ski season falls in February/ March and this of course just happens to be when half term & sometimes Easter fall. Anyway if you wish to take your holidays in the low season, bargains can be had and for instance if you go to the Mediterranean it should be warmer than in the UK and of course if you are into your sight seeing then this can be a very comfortable time to travel. Malta, is an island steeped in history, the island is small and very easy to get around either by public transport or you may prefer to hire a car. There is certainly plenty to see. As an idea of price the 4 star Fortina Hotel which is renowned for its spa facilities is available from just £229 for a week in December or £465 for 2 weeks in Jan/Feb this is a Half Board basis, no single supplement plus a couple of Spa Sante sessions thrown in. The 2 week option also allows you have an extra week free on a B&B basis. Cyprus, this is a year round island offering beaches & mountains you can even ski here in the winter. How about this for a bargain staying at the 5 star Hotel Almyra enjoy a week full board November—January from just £299 Now if you are looking for hotter weather how about Abu Dhabi? A 5 night all inclusive break at the 5 star Intercontinental starts in September at just £699! I actually had a long weekend in Abu Dhabi during October, it was baking hot and a great place to chill out and unwind. Mauritius, further afield a 14 hour flight but on the same time as ourselves (no jet lag). It is a great island to visit year round as it does not have a rainy season and is a pleasant temperature. How about 10 nights this September all inclusive from £1169 staying at the 4 star Pearle Beach Resort. Antigua, why not escape to the Caribbean for a week? Antigua is a lovely island has great beaches and is home to the historic English Harbour. 7 nights staying at the Jolly Beach Resort this September starts at just £899 all inclusive. Vietnam, if this is on your to do list why not visit in the next 12 months as visa’s have been waived saving you £100. The best time to visit is October to April and there are many package options. Vietnam has a very interesting past plus your spending money goes a long way. Vietnam & Cambodia are two of my favourite destinations I have been to. I hope that the above gives you an idea of where you can go for what cost. I could go on for pages the world has so many destinations to offer, why not try some where new? Sun Burn Advice for melanoma. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and requires immediate attention from a doctor. Your Action Plan Be smart in the sun. The easiest way to treat a sunburn is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Apply sunscreen regularly. The NHS recommends using one that is broad spectrum (meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays), water resistant, and has an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher. You should also consider staying out of the sun during the middle of the day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), wearing protective clothing, and avoid tanning beds. You can also chow down on some sun-friendly foods, like salmon, which contains omega-3 fatty acids that may help block some UV rays. If it’s too late, here’s how to treat your burn: l Cool Off. Lightly apply a cool compress like a wet washcloth to the burned skin. However, skip the ice. It can damage your skin or irritate the burn even more. If it’s too painful to use a cool compress, you can also run cool water (but not ice cold) over the burn for 10 or 15 minutes. l Soothe the sore. Try applying some aloe to help reduce skin inflammation. Skip skin products that contain alcohol—this may dry out skin even more.

22

l Hit the pharmacy. Taking an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or aspirin may help. If your sunburn

is extremely uncomfortable, you may be able to get a topical prescription from your doc for diclofenac, which according to one study, may reduce pain and swelling. l

Don’t pop the blisters. If blisters appear, don’t break them. Instead, cover them lightly with gauze. If they do break, apply an antibiotic ointment and then cover them with gauze.

l

Avoid tight clothing. This sounds like a no-brainer, but if your hands or arms are burned and swollen, remove any tight rings, bracelets or watches while you heal. Likewise, you’ll probably be more comfortable in loose clothing.

My Story

My body has a story, and only I
get to decide what that story means. This morning, as I was about to hop into the shower, I just so happened to glance in the mirror. I’m not sure why or what drew my attention, but my eyes were drawn to my breasts, and I suddenly noticed something I hadn’t seen before–stretch marks! Stretch marks aren’t new to me by any means. I have them on my legs, butt, and hips. I’ve had some since I was a teenager and others occurred during my pregnancy 9 years ago. But these little guys…they caught me by surprise. It’s possible they’ve been around for ages and I had simply never noticed them, but either way, this was the first I’d seen of them. So in an effort to demystify this situation, I figured I should question the person who probably looks at my body even more than I do: my husband.

28

I walked into John’s office, stark naked, shower cap on my head (I mean, let’s be honest, I don’t often wash my hair) and asked, “Have you seen these before?” John replied (quite nonchalantly, I might add) that he hadn’t. I said, rather perplexed, that neither had I.

And then do you know what I did? I got in the shower and moved on with my life. Because here’s the deal: I have stretch marks. I have cellulite. I have “imperfections.” I also have a strong, capable body that can do pull-ups in the double digits and deadlift 2x my bodyweight on command. I honour my body. I never take movement for granted. I am a powerful woman whose body is made from (among other things) skin, muscle, and fat–things that can and will sometimes change with the natural flow of life. I’ve weighed 115 pounds (while in the British Army on basic training), 175 pounds (the day I had my son), 130 pounds (today!) and everywhere in between. Continued on Page 30

My Story My body has experienced changes.

my beautiful body and treated it like it just wasn’t good enough. That didn’t serve me well at all. That’s not the story I want to tell. The story I want to tell is far more meaningful than that. My story is filled with love, learning, laughter, and tears. My story is powerful and uniquely mine. It’s the story of a mother, a wife, a friend, a ex-soldier, a colleague, and a woman imbued with radiant strength and relentless positivity.

My body has been through 27 hours of childbirth, 2 hours of pushing, and 12 months of breast feeding. I have brought a human into this world. He is compassionate, empathic, loyal, funny, curious and kind. He makes me laugh and gives me a reason to embody strength. He is proud to have a strong mum, and is actually the one to whom the credit for the “Inner Strength” motto goes to. What kind of story will I allow my body to tell? Will it be a sad story, the kind where I feel sorry for myself, nit picking at every little detail and feeling less than worthy because of a few flaws? Or is it a powerful story, a story of nurturing, growth, discovery and the multitude of things this body has accomplished over the years?

30

The only person who gets to tell that story is me. In the past, I’ve hated my body into hiding. I’ve allowed self-loathing and feelings of unworthiness to dictate my path, and I’ve let shame back me into a dark corner. I’ve striven for perfection and even I’ve been mean to

My story is about freedom. Freedom from shaming my form, freedom from hating my body into leanness, freedom from societal constructs of what a woman “should” be. I have the Freedom to be 100% unapologetic, freedom to be me. I have stretch marks. And with that, I will keep moving forward on this beautiful adventure. Anne Deer - Leconfield

Why Everyone Should Unplug More Often I don’t know about you, but my smartphone sometimes seems like Piccadilly Circus at rush hour. Between texts, emails, regular old phone calls, and notifications from multiple social media sites, keeping up with all the inputs can feel like a full-time job. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I passed a full 12 hours without checking my phone at least once. You’d think just turning off the gizmo would solve this (admittedly first world) problem, but going without technology can feel like cutting off a limb for young adults who’ve been “plugged in” since junior school. I’m not the only one who’s noticed this—I’ve read a ton of thought pieces by Internet bigwigs about the importance of taking deliberate breaks from all things web-related. Talking about

taking a break from the Internet (gasp!) raises a few important questions: Has technology transformed from a convenience into a curse? And is disconnecting an important life strategy for making constant communication sustainable, or is it just the latest tech trend? Open 24/7: Why It’s Not So Great Research suggests social media is the millenial generation’s drug of choice. While not technically considered an addiction, excessive attachment to the Internet is becoming more commonplace and problematic. A 2010 University of Maryland (USA) study found many young people describe their dependence on the Internet as an addiction, even if they’re not officially diagnosable. In the study, 200 students were required to go on a 24-hour media fast and then write about their experience. Overall the students complained that they felt bored, disconnected, uncomfortable, and anxious without their phones and computers.

Supporting The Local Economy These withdrawal symptoms suggest there must be some benefits to being “plugged in” all the time, right? For many people, the allure of being attached to a smartphone is the ability to keep tabs on family, friends, and breaking news whenever, wherever. Compared to reading a newspaper or calling a friend for a long chat on the phone, social media encourages brief, unfocused, multitasking-friendly “check ins” rather than long periods of absorption. For better or worse, smartphones make it easy to check various sites and social media profiles with the tap of a fingertip, all while keeping the rest of our brains and bodies engaged in other tasks (though sometimes with dangerous consequences). Go-Go-Gadgets In some cases, the downsides to keeping phones and computers switched on 24/7 could outweigh the benefits. Multitasking - perhaps this generation’s Great White Whale - almost never boosts productivity. In fact, it’s usually just a form of procrastination that distracts us from what’s important and inhibits the formation of short-term memories. Obsessive social networking isn’t doing us any favours either. Constantly checking social media sites, work emails, and texts from far-flung friends sounds like it’s fostering connectivity, but the opposite is often true. Studies show spending tons of time online can actively harm relationships, interpersonal communication skills, and mental health. A recent study also shows that (perhaps unsurprisingly) following ex-lovers on social media can make it difficult for partners to move on after a breakup. All of this might be due to the fact that social media is the Green Eyed Monster’s preferred stomping ground. Checking in on friends’ frequent vacations, late-night take-away runs, and sunshiny days at the beach can create a constant state of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and anxiety. People obsessively refresh Facebook feeds and track Twitter followers because they’re afraid to be “on the outside” of news, events, and social gatherings. But at the end of the day, browsing photos from other people’s fun times is not the same as attending those parties and picnics and actually hanging out with friends in the flesh. Open Office Hours Constant connectivity hasn’t just changed how we socialise, but also how we bring home the bacon. Smart phones have created a whole new interpretation of the traditional “workaholic” trope. Instead of the classic image of a busy professional ensconced in their office at 2 a.m., we now see young worker bees emailing while brunching and checking expense reports at the supermarket. As more and more business happens

online versus in a cubicle or a meeting room, it’s entirely feasible to never stop working (minus a few hours of sleep). But is that a good thing? The general agreement (thank goodness) is “no.” Studies show that in spite of modern work trends, we actually need weekends and nights off to disconnect and recuperate from the stresses of work. Constantly checking email, in particular, prevents people from distancing themselves from the work environment— which can make it impossible to keep stress in check. Rage Against the Machines: How Unplugging Helps In the past, people could “switch off” after work by simply going home or avoid dealing with dramatic friends by not picking up the phone. But smartphones, social media, and the expectation that everyone should be available all of the time have made taking a breather much more difficult. From this necessity, a new (anti-) tech trend has arisen: Over the past few years, the concept of “unplugging”, or ditching technology for a given period of time, has become popular amongst bloggers, tech wizards, and thought leaders around the web. If multitasking and constant email cause a lack of productivity, negatively impact social relationships, and increase overall stress, can simply abstaining from using technology reverse these negative consequences? The simple answer, according to most research, is “yes.” Even brief activities such as taking a short walk (sans phone, of course), spending time in nature, or daydreaming can help the brain reboot. But without free time (i.e. totally unstructured and without Facebook, idle web surfing, or TV), it’s impossible to fully learn new skills and keep the brain at its cognitive best. Off the Grid - The Takeaway “Unplugging” is a trendy buzzword these days, but hopefully taking regular technological breaks isn’t just a passing fad. The Internet and mobile communication have grown by impressive leaps and bounds in the past ten years, largely to our society’s benefit. But because we’re used to tech companies rolling out a new (and better!) product or software every week, we’ve been operating under the idea that “more is more”—more communication is good, more social media sites are better, and, above all, the ability to contact anyone at anytime is best of all. But in reality, this behavior might be unsustainable. Keeping up with email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other sites 24/7 can be exhausting, bad for our brains, bad for our relationships, and bad for our productivity. Instead of fading out like many transient trends, perhaps it would be better if the concept of “unplugging” catches on even more and helps us tech junkies develop new protocols for how to communicate and connect (without going crazy) in the Internet Age.

6 Common Worries That Are Not Worth Stressing About You know the saying, “Worrying is like a rocking chair. It’ll give you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere”? Well, it’s true: Worrying is a complete and utter misuse of our energy, power, and imagination. All of us have fears, “what if’s,” and incessant mental chatter about what could go wrong in the future. These thoughts do nothing but paralyse us. The good news: The things we worry about, even if they actually happen, wouldn’t be nearly as terrible we think. As psychological researcher Shawn Achor writes in his book The Happiness Advantage, “Adversities, no matter what they are, simply don’t hit us as hard as we think they will. Our fear of consequences is always worse than the consequences themselves.” Here are six common worries I’ve found plague far too many of us that deserve to be debunked. 1. “I can’t take time off.” If we take two weeks off work to have a little time out or to travel, so many people think: Catastrophe! Disaster! But what we think might happen is often so far removed from reality. I recently met someone who was proud of the fact that he never takes time off work (sorry, but joke’s on you if you never use your vacation days!). I

36

spoke about a holiday I was planning. “I could never take that much time off,” he said. I asked why. He had no good reason. So what are we really afraid of? The truth is, if a bus hit you tomorrow, the company would still go on without you. Taking a break is fine. In fact, it’s better than fine: It restores you and helps you work better. Even top CEOs and the president of the United States take vacation. Don’t let this year pass you by without a break! 2. “I couldn’t possibly go after my dream job.” Sometimes it might seem easier to avoid striving for what your heart truly wants rather than risk pursuing it and be disappointed. But it’s much easier to fail at being a lawyer if it’s being a writer that you dream of. Sure you can still thrive in a career in law, but dreams don’t dissolve just because they scare you. Dreams never die no matter how much we try to silence them (or dispose of them) with Continued on Page 38

Supporting You alternative success. Following your true passion, at least in some capacity, is your obligation to yourself. And your life can radically change for the better when you do. 3. “I’m terrible at speaking in front of a crowd.” Public speaking (or networking) is feared and avoided by most people. But the ability to speak confidently in front of a group and foster a strong professional network can make or break your career. You don’t have to be perfect, but you can get better. Sign up for a class, watch TED talks, work with a coach, practice (take a video on your phone to observe yourself—I used to!), and consume all of the awesome free advice online. Most people are pleasantly surprised to learn that they are better than they think they are. What skill should you start investing time in to improve? 4. “He/she doesn’t truly love me.” This is a core human fear: the worry that if people really knew the “real” you they wouldn’t accept you. I coached a woman last year who was overweight and afraid to lose weight, as she felt that being heavier could justify why she was single. Her weight acted as a shield. Maybe you have a block in another form. Fear that we are somehow “unloveable” is what keeps a lot of us from true intimacy. We are worried that if someone gets too close, the “real” us will be revealed and consequently rejected. Recognizing this is a universal fear and cultivating self-love is one the most important things you can do.

38 5. “I can’t leave this relationship.”

Staying in an unsatisfying relationship for too long is the real worry here. You are wasting precious time! I can’t tell you how many people have told me they regret the length of time that they stayed in a wrong relationship (especially in their younger years which, looking back, are full of possibility). I get it: Change, especially when we’re leaving what feels comfortable, generates our most exaggerated worries. But what could happen if you had the courage to do what your heart is secretly telling you? Will you still be alive? I bet the answer is yes. And after a while, freer, lighter, and happier. 6. “I’m not ready for the next step.” Success, however you define it, brings responsibility. Becoming a parent, a manager, a business owner—whatever your next step is—will require hard work, self-belief, and strength. Our

But the truth is nothing can truly prepare you for many of life’s experiences until they actually arrive (just ask any parent or entrepreneur!). I’ll let you in on a little secret. Almost no one feels ready for something new (recall your first kiss, moving out of your childhood home, starting your first job). But we still do it. We feel the discomfort and move forward anyway. And as a result, we become ready. New challenges reveal to us our capacity for growth. The Bottom Line In moments of real worry, remember a time in your life when something went horribly wrong. Maybe you were fired, dumped, or harshly criticised. What happened? You probably made it through OK in the end. So let your past experiences inform your current fears. You are stronger than you think. What you might have lost sleep over was probably was not nearly as bad as you expected when it actually happened. Worry prevents nothing at all—it just robs today of its joy. Use your imagination wisely. Your self-talk and mindset is what deserves your attention. And don’t downplay your dreams—they’re all you’ve got. When you next confront a worry, don’t wonder what’s the worst that can happen. Instead ask yourself: What is the best that could happen? And be prepared for it to come true.

Gardening

August in the greenhouse My greenhouses are the engine rooms of my garden. I have two: both six-by-eights, or in modern parlance 1.8m x 2.4m. Aluminium, pretty bog standard, and I love them both. Neither cost me much: I just kept an eye on the small ads in the local paper (Freecycle is another happy hunting ground). The first cost me £30 as long as I came along with a willing husband to dismantle it; the second came free with the house, though it was in a bit of a state so I’ve had to move it, dig up the crappy gravel-andplastic-bags floor and replace most of the glass. It’s still not enough: under Percy Thrower’s Law, which states that whatever size greenhouse you have it will always be too small, I am now hatching plans to acquire one of those temporary pop-up greenhouses so I can evict my seedling trays when it’s time to put the tomatoes in the ground, as this year things have really gone wrong on the tomato front following a traffic jam on the seedling benches in greenhouse no. 1. But failing a third greenhouse – and in any case, if I get one it’ll be a polytunnel – I have to manage with what I’ve got.

Top left: perennial onion bulbils. Top right and bottom left: ‘Stuttgarter’ onions. Bottom right: ‘Golden Gourmet’ shallots (a bit feeble and certainly not as good as the ‘Picasso’) Actually though I’m inordinately proud of them, large onions aren’t terribly practical in the kitchen. If you’re cooking a recipe which calls for two onions, you’re fine: just use one of your big ‘uns. But normally you just want one, medium-sized onion, and large ones like these have little to do with moderation. You end up with fridge salad compartment syndrome: when you get half an onion mouldering away in your salad compartment and by the time you find it again it’s much too late.

Here she is: the ‘main’ greenhouse, by which I mean the one that’s successful. Cucumbers groaning under the strain of all the fruit on the right; also in here are aubergines, peppers and tomatilloes at the back. But this month has been all about drying onions. It’s been a good onion year: sun plus a spot or two of rain and mine are about as enormous as they’ve ever been. I have perennial onion bulbils, a rather pathetic garlic crop (after my outbreak of rust earlier this year), maincrop onions and shallots, all spread out across both greenhouses and getting thoroughly in the way. My prize specimens have been my ‘Stuttgarter Giant’ - a sort of beginner’s show onion. Not quite as large as, say, ‘Bedfordshire Champion’ or ‘Ailsa Craig’ but satisfyingly eyecatching nonetheless: around 15cm across each, with a handsomely flattened, goldenskinned bulb. Gardening So I might just go for a smaller variety next year. On my must-tryagain list are the ‘Picasso’ shallots I grew for the first time this year: wonderful big, fat things, almost as good as the ‘Hative de Niort’ ones I grew a few years ago (and that is high praise indeed coming from a Francophile like me).

If it’s reliably sunny for two weeks after lifting them you can dry them on the surface of the soil: this is a bit of a pipe dream in the UK, so best just to get on with stacking them one layer thick in trays to dry. Mushroom trays are fine; you can also lay them on pallets as long as the gaps aren’t too wide. Bring them into the greenhouse for two weeks of irritation as you tiptoe over them where they’re blocking your pathways, not forgetting to turn them every day or two so they’re evenly dried. Once your fortnight is up, you can take them inside and string them into long plaits to hang in your spare room or corridor (kitchens are a little damp, though our onions get used so quickly you can just about get away with it). They should last like that for around six months, through until February next year: that’s if you haven’t eaten them by then! Rosemary Patrick - Cherry Burton Gardening Society

The only real disappointment has been the ‘Electric‘ autumn-sown onions. We have eaten them all now: but they were a disappointing pale pink instead of the deep red I had hoped for. I shall not be planting them again: instead I’m including one of the good red maincrops in next year’s planting, something like ‘Red Baron’, maybe. To grow the really sweet red onions, like the Italian ‘Rossa Savonese’ or ‘Red Brunswick’, you’ll have to sow from seed: more patience than I’ve got, but I might yet be converted (we really like red onions). I bring them in around now, once the stems have collapsed into a brownish heap on the ground. They won’t be doing any more growing so you may as well dig them up: ideally, loosen the roots a couple of days in advance, just so they stop sucking up moisture and start to go into a state of suspended animation.

You know it’s been a good summer when you breathe a huge sigh of relief on waking to a rainy day. When a gardener needs an excuse to stay indoors it’s fine weather indeed. My rainy day has been much anticipated as I’ve desperately needed some time catching up with all the indoor gardening jobs piling up while I’ve been busy getting sunburnt resowing the lettuces or planting out a late batch of mangetout seedlings. The relentless sunshine (see, we Brits can complain about anything) has meant I’ve been desperate for some indoor time to store my ever-burgeoning harvest of seeds, roots and beans. Since the harvest is what it’s all about, it’s a little ironic that I get so behind with it all in late summer. It’s hard to prioritise when the garden is demanding its mid-summer resow too: but instead of wielding a fork and sowing seeds I should be downing tools outside and getting into the kitchen instead.

Gardening Purple French beans cooling off after a bit of a blanch

I have had many disappointments on the journey to finding the best way of freezing beans so they come out very nearly as good as they go in. They have a nasty habit of turning watery and a little tasteless if you do it wrong. I don’t process the beans, beyond giving them a quick wash: I don’t even top and tail them, let alone slice them. I just chuck them whole into a big pan of water on a rolling boil to blanch for around two minutes. Then I just scoop them from the water and dunk straight into a bowl of cold water to stop them cooking as quickly as possible. Pat more-or-less dry and pack into freezer trays.

First on my list were the beans: I’ve had two wigwams to pick this year, good old reliable green ‘Cobra’ and handsome deep purple ‘Cosse Violette’, which took a little while to get going but is now pumping them out faster than we can eat them. Time to get freezing. Most very fresh vegetables like beans, peas, broad beans and runners can be frozen as soon as they come off the plant: the exception is courgettes which turn into a soggy mush so are best made into chutney or cooked up into soup or pasta sauces before freezing.

Next up; the beetroot. I like roast beetroot but sadly nobody else in the family does. Normally if the family think they don’t like something I just include it in whatever I’m cooking without telling them, but it is difficult to smuggle beetroot into any dish without anyone noticing as explaining away a vivid pink colouring takes some doing. Luckily we all like pickled beetroot and it’s a doddle to make, so that’s where most of my beetroot end up. I follow Delia’s recipe for pickled beetroot with shallots; takes half an hour to do tops, and it’s completely delish. And my shallots are conveniently ready to harvest right now, too. And most excitingly of all, I’ve been branching out into saving more seed this year. I’ve always saved a little of my own seed just for fun: but I’m beginning to think I ought to take it more seriously. Continued on Page 44

Gardening This year my Telephone peas have been stupendous. They have grown above head height and made a mockery of the feeble 6ft high peasticks I put in for them. Next year I shall have to use runner-bean-style A-frame pole supports. Might have been the good season again but… it also might have been the fact that I’m now two generations down the line of adapting, ever-so-subtly, to the exact conditions I have in my particular garden. So to put the theory to the test, this year I let one of my lettuces run to seed. Once it started producing little tufts of white down – rather like thistledown – I cut off the whole stalk and brought it indoors to finish drying (and to make sure the seeds didn’t blow away while I was waiting for them to be ready). Now it’s started raining I can process them, removing all the bits of stalk and fluff till I have as close to pure seed as you can get if you’re saving your own. This is a long and very tedious process, so find yourself a good radio programme and settle down to the task. I picked out the stalks by hand, then passed the remaining pile of fluff and seeds through a sieve. Result: seeds plus finer fluff. This last you can blow, very very gently, off the top (go outdoors if you can as the fluff goes everywhere) till you’re left with mostlyseed to sow next year. I can’t wait to see what happens…

44 Beetroot pickled in hot vinegar and peppercorns and packed into a Kilner jar. Yum. A couple of years ago I got my hands on a packet of ‘Telephone’ peas (also marketed as ‘Alderman’). I was pretty impressed: 6ft high plants, mega-high yields and fat, sweet peas. So I saved myself an envelope full of seed and re-sowed them last year. Result: turbo-charged growth, even better than the previous year, and super-healthy plants. Might have been the season, I thought. So I saved a few from that second-generation batch of plants too. Lettuce seed stalks waiting for some patient soul to come and sort the seed from the chaff

Watering Strategies How much you need to water plants will depend on a few things. Hotter and drier air will pull moisture from plants and soils more quickly, so more watering will be necessary as the temperatures go up. The type of soil you have in your garden will also affect how much water is available to plants. A good rule of thumb is that plants should receive enough water to cover the ground with an inch of water each week, and it’s better for plants to get all the water one or two times per week rather than a little bit each day. An easy test to see if plants have enough water available is to put a finger in the soil and make sure it feels moist two to three inches below the surface. When watering, it’s best to use a watering can or sprinkler (dumping a lot of water on the plants all at once can damage them). Of course, if your area gets a lot of rain, you won’t need to perform this chore often!

August Tips for: Lawns

Mow regularly but do not bother to feed or water; it is a waste of time and will promote vigorous growth that may not stand up to the rigours of winter. Come autumn, feed with a high phosphate content fertiliser to promote root growth and strengthen the grass for winter. If it has grown out of control whilst you have been away cut it first with the mower blades on the highest setting and then on progressively lower settings until back to the usual level – this will train the grass to grow leafily again. If you are planning a new lawn, start preparing the area by digging and clearing weeds.

Bulbs, flowers and containers

Plant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus. Always use the side bulbs of tulips and daffodils as they make perfectly good bulbs in their own right. Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas. Put poinsettias in the dark for 14 hours a day and full light for the remaining 10 hours to encourage the formation of those cheery festive red bracts.

Birds

Birds need fresh water for bathing and drinking, especially during hot and dry spells, so keep supplies plentiful and regularly changed.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

THE ETIQUETTE OF QUEUEING! They say that British people love to queue, but I can’t stand it. Maybe that’s the Irish in me, who knows?! What really gets my goat though is when you’re standing there patiently and other people forget their manners. Yes it is the summer holidays which, of course, means we’ll all be going for days out and no doubt there will be plenty of queues for us to stand in! But let’s please remember that we are not the only people in the queue (obviously!) and that we’d all prefer not to stand in line, but that’s just how it goes, so deal with it! Please don’t be rude, make sure you don’t swear in front of children and don’t jostle others. And finally, if there’s one thing that’s really frustrating it’s when you’re in a ridiculously long queue and you’re almost at the front, then the person you’ve been standing behind for an hour all of a sudden let’s in about another six people because they’ve been “saving a space for them so they didn’t all have to queue.” Now that, in my mind, is simply not on. Think about how 46 your actions will make other people feel and don’t be so selfish! That happened to me recently, can you tell?!

MILLENNIUM FALCONS BROUGHT IN TO PROTECT PENGUINS I absolutely love the penguins at The Deep, so imagine my dismay when I heard they were being victimised by pigeons! If you saw my report on ITV’s Calendar News then you will already know all about it. But for those of you who didn’t (how could you have missed it?!!) there’s no need to worry because the award-winning aquarium has drafted in falconry experts to help! Yes, birds of prey, Peregrine Falcons and Harris Hawks to be precise, are now in the process of scaring away pigeons who are nesting on the roof outside the penguin enclosure. They’re not only making a mess but their presence means the penguins can’t go out in case they get chased. Wimbledon have used the same method of chasing away pesky pigeons, but it could take up to 3 months - so let’s hope the penguins will be ready to check out the view from their balcony in a few months time!
