Connectivity remains a top priority for Beverley June was the most momentous month for many decades in British politics. The vote to leave the European Union was a decision which has already had significant consequences. The result was not the outcome that I wished for - I campaigned for Britain to remain a member of the EU on the modified terms which had been secured by David Cameron and I continue to believe this would have been the best way forward for our country. However, I also believe the decision needs to be respected and implemented. As I write the situation is developing quickly and it will take some weeks for the new landscape to become clear. Following David Cameron’s resignation the Government’s response will need to be shaped by a new Prime Minister, who will be in office by September. Mr Cameron has given us time to decide precisely what Britain’s new relationship with Europe should be by deferring the decision to trigger the Article 50 procedure for formal withdrawal until his successor is in place. In the meantime, and during the negotiations
that will follow, people should be reassured there will be no change to people’s rights to travel and work, to the way our goods and services are traded, or to the way our economy and financial system is regulated. I also want to say a word about the dreadful murder of Jo Cox, who was a very popular and tremendously able colleague in the House of Commons. This was a truly shocking event and Parliament was united as one in our utter condemnation of her killing and in our deep sympathy for her family. Jo died serving her constituents. Thankfully this incident stands out for being so exceptionally rare and I will continue to hold my regular surgeries in Beverley, Hedon, Withernsea and Hornsea. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of assistance. Different ways to improve your home
Now finally the summer is here I have heard, ‘I intend to use the time to improve my home to improve the selling price can you suggest one or two ideas’? There are many different ways to improve the home. Focusing on increasing the living space loft conversion and adding a conservatory are 2 common methods. Information suggests that these can increase the value of property if done to the correct building regulations and in keeping to the style of the house. Look how to improve the kitchen, as I have heard some people call this room ‘the heart of a home’. Although care needs to be taken when thinking about the budget as an expensive kitchen will not necessarily add more value but may make the house more appealing to buyers. Improving kerb appeal is an area which can be done relatively quickly. Time spent improving the first impression garden and front door should make a difference. Decorate the house in neutral colours
keeping feature walls to a minimum, as you need to appeal to as many tastes as possible. Decluttering rooms and ensure large TVs or sofas are not overpowering a room is also important. Plus, ensure those ‘little’ jobs that have been waiting are completed are completed. However as some of these seem like DIY jobs care must be taken to ensure that the work is to a professional standard. Finally remember there is a ceiling price which people will pay for a house in a specific area and although you have spent £000’s on improving the home this does not necessarily mean you will get £000’s back.
Until next month take care. Michael Allison, Director of Martin & Co (Beverley)

Competition
GARY NUMAN to play Sheffield Foundry on 15th September 2016 Following the success of his Sold-Out London residence last October and the Sold Out Manchester & Cork shows that followed. Gary Numan is back with a September 2016 UK Tour which sees him playing a set compromising of material from his albums ‘Replicas’, ‘The Pleasure Principle’ and ‘Teleken’.
Following on from the success of his Top 20 album, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind), and accompanying twoyear Splinter world tour, electronic and industrial music pioneer Gary Numan returns to the UK to celebrate his classic albums Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon in September 2016.
8
“Having spent most of the last couple of years touring Splinter, with the release of the new album released later this year, 2016 seems an ideal time to
revisit the three albums that changed my life,” says Numan. “These three albums are now considered classics and playing tracks from each one in September, will be very special for me. I very rarely look back at past glories but, with these shows, I intend to not only look back, but to celebrate those early days. Without those songs and experiences I wouldn’t be here today. Splinter was widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best album I’ve ever made. With that achievement I’ve finally learned to be proud of my history, and that’s what these shows are all about.” Numan’s influence has been recognized by a diverse array of the world’s greatest artists - from Prince to Lady Gaga, Jack White to Kanye West, and The Foo Fighters to Nine Inch Nails. Memorials A lady with a bouquet of flowers approached me when I was a Virger at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. “I’d like to put these on the memorial to Peter O’Toole,” she said. I knew the actor had recently died, but we didn’t have a menorial to him. “We don’t have a memorial to Peter O’Toole,” I said. “Yes, you do!” she insisted. “No.... we don’t.” “Yes, I’ll show you!” And she lead me down into the crypt, past Nelson’s tomb, past the Duke of Wellington’s enormous sarcophagus, past numerous other memorials, and triumphantly placed her flowers at the base of the memorial to Lawrence of Arabia. “There!” she said, “See!?”
10
Similarly, Beverley Minster is full of burials and memorials. The credit for our existance as a church and a town is, of course, down to St John of Beverley who died in 721 AD and whose bones are
buried under a marble stone in the nave. There are generations of parishioners buried within the building and in the churchyard, stone tablets memorialising late 15th century clergy and bishops, and of course all those remembered poignantly in the Soldiers’ Chapel. Last week, and for the rest of the summer, the Yorkshire Sculptors Group have installed an exhibit in and around Beverley Minster, using the space and some of its memorials as inspiration. One artist, Victoria Ferrand Scott, will be exhibiting her work near a bronze plaque where her ancestor was buried in the building in 1560. “I imagined his bones beneath the stone floor giving rise to the roots of the family tree, rendered in fabric,” she said of her work in the Exhibition Catalogue. Come visit us this summer to see all the works of art, the architecture, the memorials, take in a service, or just to experience the space. And feel free to leave a bouquet of flowers if one of the memorials especially moves you to do so! Robyn Cleveland Head Virger

A Pirates Life for Me! Hull Pirates are Hull’s number one ice hockey team! We play in the English Premier League after forming in the summer of 2015. Here, we provide you with the latest news about our club.
20
The Pirates have been progressing from strength-to-strength in the off-season as we prepare for the new campaign to get underway in September. On-the-ice, we have made a number of additions with a mixture of experienced players and youth making up our squad. Most recently, Slovakian forward Andrej Themar signed for the club after scoring 33 goals and assisted a further 37 in Norway. With the English Premier League having a rule that permits five non-British trained players per team, Themar joins Stanislav Lascek, Jaroslav Sarsok and player/head coach Dominic Osman as the club’s import players next season. Lascek joins the club from fellow Yorkshire and divisional rivals Sheffield Steeldogs. ‘Stano’ boasts a wealth of experience in both Europe and North America. The 30-yearold was drafted in round 5 by Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League in America in 2005. The forward posted very impressive point tallies in the years either side of the draft. For Chicoutimi Saguenéens in the QMJHL, Lascek posted 18 goals and 72 assists in 53 games (90 total points) and then 47 goals and 88 assists (135 total points) in just 64 appearances. Lascek has also previously played in the AHL for Springfield Falcons and Norfolk Admirals and in the ECHL for Johnstown Chiefs (27 points in 25 games) and Mississippi Sea Wolves (21 points in 23 games). In addition to the import players, the Pirates have been keen to improve the British core of players in the roster and have made a number of top British signings ready for the new campaign. One
of those top British additions is Ryan Watt. Playing for Basingstoke Bison last season, the forward registered 33 total points (10 goals and 23 assists) in 48 games and also picked up 113 penalty minutes. Watt has a wealth of experience in the EPL, having played for Basingstoke Bison, Bracknell Bees, Slough Jets and Swindon Wildcats. The forward also has experience of the Elite League, having played for the Braehead Clan during the 2012-13 season, winning the Gardiner Conference title. Watt has experience of winning titles at EPL level, having won the league last season with Basingstoke Bison. In the 2008-2009 season, Watt picked up a silver medal for Great Britain under-20s at the World Junior Championships. Since 2006, only three seasons have not contained an award for the forward. In addition to Ryan Watt, Nathan Salem is a returning British player for next season after joining the Pirates late last season. The 24-year-old has had an instant impact since joining the Pirates from Telford in December 2015, registering 21 points (10 goals and 11 assists) in 24 games. With the season due to get underway around mid-September, Hull are set for a competitive season in which they will be hoping for silverware. All the Pirates’ home games are played at Hull Ice Arena. ANDREA BOCELLI to play the SHEFFIELD ARENA on FRIDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2016 One of the world’s great voices, Andrea Bocelli returns to the UK & Ireland celebrating the greatest movie songs of all time. Showcasing his latest, epic album ‘Cinema,’ the tour will feature stunning pieces from the classic cinema soundtracks along with arias and duets from the most legendary operas and other classic pieces from the artist’s repertoire. ‘Cinema’ made history in the UK by reaching Number 3 in the Official Charts, crowning Bocelli as the only classical artist to achieve ten Top 10 albums. Bocelli reunited with his musical dream team for the recording - including David Foster, Humberto Gatica and Tony Renis who worked together on the trailblazing success of Bocelli’s ‘Amore.’ Together, they explored theme songs featured in films such as “Doctor Zhivago”, “Love Story”, “The Godfather”, “Life is Beautiful”, “Gladiator”, “The Postman”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and many more, as well as popular songs from stage musicals, immortalised by their film versions, such as “West Side Story” and “Evita.” A duet with pop superstar Ariana Grande on ‘E Piu Ti Penso’ from ‘Once Upon A Time In America’ completed the stellar line up.
28
From Ennio Morricone to Leonard Bernstein, these songs represent modern
classics and over 4 nights, Bocelli will transport audiences to these epic film sets, as well as performing some of his best-loved songs. The biggest selling solo classical artist of all time, Bocelli has performed for four U.S. presidents, two popes and the royal family, as well as at ceremonies for the Olympic Games and the World Cup. Tickets purchased online or by phone are priced £49.50 - £132 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena box office are priced £47.25 - £126 including booking fee. Arena Box Office 0114 256 5656 or online www.sheffieldarena.co.uk.

Gardening
Gardening for kids Use your own garden as an excuse to spend time with your family and you can all get some exercise while having fun. Planting tips and ideas l Choose bedding plants that will look promising as soon as they go in the ground. Pansies, geraniums and primroses are usually safe bets with pretty results. l Keep mess under control by getting your child to plant flowers in pots that can sit outside but don’t require lots of digging. The pot marigold can be planted in spring and within 10 weeks produces lots of flowers. l For something different and durable, sow cornflower seeds in one corner of your garden and wait for their vibrant bluey purple flowers spring up. l If your child wants to plant something from seed, keep up their interest by taking regular photos to chart their bloom’s progress as the weeks go by. Gardening in small outside spaces l If you don’t have any or very much garden space, try windowsill pots (herbs and small tomatoes your child can then help you cook
36
with when they’re ready). l Ask a neighbour or elderly relative if you can help look after their garden. It’s still great fun and will bring great pleasure to someone else. l Find a local community gardening project. You can learn a lot from other gardeners’ style of garden design while you’re all joining in. Projects for younger children l Easy grow flowers. Grow marigolds and sunflowers from seeds. They are easy to manage in most soils and provide colourful results to impress your little gardeners. Continued on Page 38

l Painting pebbles. Decorate flower beds by lining them with pretty stones. Get your child to paint each pebble with a base colour then talk about ideas for patterns or pictures before letting them loose with childfriendly paints. When these are dry, paint over with varnish. Projects for older kids l Create a children’s corner. Let your child have a small section of your garden to build a little rockery (clear away grass, arrange some large rocks and plant small plants, eg primroses or sedum ‘purple emperor’). l Potted tomatoes. Fill a pot with fresh compost then sprinkle over a handful of tomato seeds. Add a little more compost then cover with cling film and secure with an elastic band. Leave by a window with light and warmth and keep the seeds watered. When the plants spout, put them into individual pots and keep them watered and fed. By early summer, when they are big enough, transfer to bigger pots in the garden. l Make a butterfly meadow. Butterflies like a variety of colours and nectar tastes but plant patches of the same flower rather than just one or two at a time. Try ‘wildflower’ or ‘meadow’ seed packs. Butterflies also like clover, buttercups and dandelions so don’t be afraid to let these flourish. Place large flat rocks around for butterflies to land on and a couple of shallow colourful dishes to catch water.

Frankly Sinatra. The world’s No1 Frank Sinatra, Stephen Triffitt, is coming to town to celebrate the golden anniversary of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ most famous recording – Sinatra Live at the Sands.
A brand-new production called Frankly Sinatra features many of the songs from the classic album, performed just the way they were back in 1966. Regarded as the definitive Sinatra live performance, the album was Frank’s first commercially-released live recording, packed with 22 tracks including many of his best-known hits. Frankly Sinatra’s producers say that authenticity can be assured: star of the show – Stephen Triffitt – has himself enjoyed three seasons at Las Vegas’ Sands Casino portraying Frank.
42
Featuring the swing, swagger and the velvet vocals of Frank Sinatra in concert, Stephen Triffitt is acclaimed worldwide as the master of his craft. The company’s MD, Michael Taylor, says Sinatra’s golden anniversary is to be celebrated in “swinging style” with a nationwide tour of brand-new stage show Frankly Sinatra in 2016. “There’s no better Sinatra,” says Michael. “Stephen Triffitt has sold out the London Palladium twice and the Royal Festival Hall with solo concert shows. “In Frankly Sinatra he skilfully dips in and out of character to tell the fascinating tale of the greatest vocalist and most charismatic performer of our time.”

Ladies Day Feature
Three Top Fashion Tips for Beverley Ladies Day Wednesday 10th August
Fashion editor Frankie Gee shares her top tips for Ladies Day at the races. It’s all about the dress
Forget wearing separates for Ladies Day, it should be about embracing your femininity and wearing a dress is the best way to do that. There are so many options out there, both in the shops and on the internet. This can often make choosing your perfect dress a little daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. My advice would be to dress for you and not for what’s ‘in fashion’. Embrace your shape and always draw attention to your best feature by showing it off in the clothes you wear. So for example, if you love your waist, wear something to complement your waist. If you have 44 killer legs then go for a slightly short number -nothing too short though – or if your décolletage is to die for, something low cut but not too revealing. By showing off your best assets you will instantly feel and look more confident. It’s all about drawing attention away from the parts you don’t love about yourself and to the parts you do.
Racing Colours
Anything bold and bright is a winning choice for Ladies Day at Beverley. I would stick to primary colours, neon’s and patterns are most definitely out. Patterns are often hard to wear; always appear less formal and are really hard to accessorise. Colours should complement one another and if you are wearing more than one, they should always be in the same tonal range.
Wearing the wrong colour can really wash you out, so try on lots of different ones and you will instantly be able to see what colours work on you and which don’t. Colour is personal, always choose the colour of the dress first and the style second. So remember, if you fall in love with a dress and the colour drains you, go back to the fitting room and try again. Colour always comes first.
Hats and Fascinators
Hats can be a tricky business but as a rule most people suit fascinators. They really are a good safe option if you are not sure what will work on you. Hats are dependent on individual face shapes so again, try as many on as possible. The key is to always try a hat on when you are wearing your whole outfit. A hat should always be the last thing to add. All the top milliners work with the clients outfits prior to the design of the hat. Investing in a really great haircut and blow dry before the big event is great to help keep your hat in place and show it off to its best potential. Finally, enjoy your day at the races.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Cling film and foil – how do you unravel it? Did you know that most of us have been using cling film and aluminium film all wrong? Does the foil or cling film just fall out of the box whenever you’re trying to unravel it making it really difficult to cut, especially cling film because it just sticks to everything? Well, it’s been revealed by a video that’s gone viral on YouTube that the majority of us haven’t discovered the little cardboard tabs hidden at the side of every box. And here’s the thing! If you push them in it holds the roll in place! Simple really – but I’ve never even noticed them! Have you?
What is going on with the weather? The weather is playing havoc with my wardrobe! One day it’s sunny, the next it’s tipping it down with rain. Alternatively it will be sunny first thing, then rain by 11 o’clock – or vice versa! I’m currently going with layers because at least I can add or take off as necessary – but I must say, I wish it would just make up its mind. It’s supposed to be 46 summer now. If only it felt like it!
Have you seen it yet? Congratulations to The Deep which has recently seen its first ever baby penguin hatch – and, of course, to the chick’s parents - Nessie and Shackleton. I’m not sure whether it’s a boy or a girl but, if they’re looking for a name, my daughter suggests Marvin or Marvina! Not sure where that came from but either one is as good a name as any. Apparently Marvina sounds like a lovely brand of chocolate! We’re planning on a visit soon and we can’t wait to see it!
