Dear Readers, Hello and welcome to the May edition of your Beverley Mag! In this month’s edition we have the first part of our A-Z of Beverley and we are covering the letters A through to K. I think you will be surprised just how many interesting facts and how much history our wonderful town and surrounding areas has on offer from TV and film stars to famous artists, the oldest horse race in the world to our very own martyr and lots more. Also, this month, we have a feature entitled ‘In Safe Hands’ helping you to find the help and services you may require in times of need and highlighting some of the services available in the local area. We have a great article about stimulating your mind and creative juices by getting up and walking about. It tells us that business meetings on the move can be far more fruitful when walking about - so at last I have a reason to get up from my office chair! We also talk about the psychology of colours and the impact that they have on our lives - all very interesting, perhaps I can use it as a tool to get Mr. G to repaint the hall stairs and landing!! Why not grab a coffee and browse through the lists of local clubs and groups to see if something takes your fancy or test yourself on this month’s crossword! In next month’s edition we will be giving you advice on places to visit and things to do during the summer months, let’s hope the sun shines! And finally…… please remember to ‘like’ our facebook page and to email in any of your interesting local stories and space allowing, you may see yourself in print, next month! Kind regards,
Jane Editor

GET SET FOR THE SEASIDE: 1920’s AND 1930’s SEASIDE FASHIONS A new exhibition ‘Get Set for the Seaside: 1920s and ‘30s Seaside Fashions’ will be running at the Treasure House in Beverley from Saturday, 3 May to Saturday, 5 July.
6
The 1920s and ‘30s were decades of change, fun and innovation in seaside fashions. Fabrics became more colourful and styles more adventurous. Swimwear became less cumbersome and increasingly fit for purpose. The public had a thirst for holidays and daytrips that embraced fresh air, sporty activities together with a touch of glamour. Resorts such as Bridlington were marketed as the perfect venue for ‘sea and sun for heath and fun’. This exhibition draws on some of the wonderful objects, images and stories that can be found in the East Riding Museums Service Collections. Bridlington Local Studies Library have also kindly loaned archive photographs for the exhibition. Admission is free. Open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.30am to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9.30am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm. For more information call (01482) 392780 or visit www.eastriding.gov.uk/museums - or via Facebook.

Beverley Tile Business Voted Best in UK
8
A local business has won a national award for “Excellence in Independent Retailing” in a competition fiercely contended by businesses across the UK Ceramic Tile Merchants, a Beverley based tile retailer, entered the UK Tile Association’s 2014 Annual Awards in December and the winners were announced at an awards ceremony in London in April. During the last year, Ceramic Tile Merchants put the finishing touches to their new spacious showroom facility which now has over 300 tile displays, in addition to purchasing a new 7500sq ft warehouse close by, which is now fully operational. There was also a big investment in building their online presence and social media. Garry Cammidge, Ceramic Tile Merchants’ managing director said, “We are absolutely delighted to be recognised by this award. It recognises the quality of what we do for our customers. Despite the continuing sluggish market conditions, we have continued to invest time and resource, in creating a wider awareness and recognition across the region, of our commitment to excellence, so we are well prepared to take advantage of an improving market”

Number Crunching
25 is the average of sites logged into daily. 73% of people use the same password. 6 characters in average password. 3 minutes taken to crack an average password.
When I saw these statistics I was shocked! Are you among them? If you are then like me, you’d have had a worrying moment or two when the Heartbleed vulnerability hit the news recently. This was a flaw in the Internet Security systems that could permit the removal of confidential data from what we once considered to be secure sites. Frightening Stuff.
Buy NOW Pay r Late 10
Frankly, when you have a whole bunch of things to remember it seems easier to use one or two passwords - with the odd variation or two. Clearly that isn’t enough anymore – The numbers tell us we need to be more careful and one of the ways to do this is to have a different password for every site. Ideally each of your passwords should be more than 8 characters long and made up of a combination of letters, numbers and punctuation characters – in mixed lower and upper case. In other words each password will be something no human being could hope to remember for longer than 2 minutes. Suddenly jane1964 has become t7V1G9rqnHw1 – creating the memory nightmare we had hoped to avoid! Writing them all down somewhere safe is one way to keep track of them – but how about when you can’t get to the list – or you lose the list?? For years now I’ve used a password manager program to take care of my entire online password collection. LastPass [www.lastpass.com] stores all my many passwords behind secure encryption and I only have to remember one single password to gain access to all the others. This simple system is available in both free and paid versions (the paid version, which offers extended coverage on tablets and phone apps, only costs $12 a year). We all have programs we use every day that are like our right arm – we’d be lost without them - for me LastPass is one of those must have’s. I think it’s worth ten times the money and once you’ve started using it, I’m sure you’ll agree with me! The time and frustration savings alone are incredible for anyone who uses their computer on a regular basis. Don’t be another password statistic – give it a try today! PS I never receive fees or commission from any of the products mentioned this column – They are just my own tried and tested personal recommendations. GARDENING
Gardening in May
12
Beware treacherous late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until the middle of the month and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold (ideally on a dry day to desiccate the victims) annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Remember these systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Dandelions are a monstrous nuisance at this time of year - if you don’t have time to deal with them terminally, at least chop their heads off before they set seed. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient! The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a
BeverleyMag MAY 2014
week rather than little and often (containers need watering every day). Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or readymade soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae.
Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulch with bark / compost. Hard pruned clematis should now be growing vigorously - tying the new stems in regularly will prevent a haphazard tangle of new shoots which can break easily. Thin annuals to prevent them becoming spindly and leggy - a gap of 6 inches between seedlings is usually about right. Tidy up spring flowering perennials such as pulmonaria cut off the old foliage, lift and divide large clumps and replant with plenty of water and organic fertiliser - lift polyanthus and relocate to a nursery bed for planting out next spring.

IN SAFE HANDS
BeverleyMag MAY 2014
In Safe Hands Feature This month we are looking at professional services that can help to make life a little easier. Whether you are elderly, disabled or just need the right advice, finding the right person or company can be a minefield. There are many services available like assisted living, where care workers come into your home on a daily basis to help with dressing, cooking, cleaning etc.. this service is not just available for the elderly, but also for those who are experiencing difficulties with everyday living. Your first point of contact for advice should be your local council who will put you in touch with social services. Other services available locally are things like assistance with transport to the shops, doctors and hospital appointments. Beverley Community lift offers services such as these. 16

IN SAFE HANDS Many supermarkets offer to deliver your shopping to your door, but if you find cooking a chore try the local ‘Meals on Wheels’ service, delivering hot, wholesome food to you on a daily basis. No one likes to talk about death, but it is the one sure thing in this world and you can do many things to make things easier on those you leave behind. Knowing that you have a will in place to safeguard your relatives can bring great peace of mind. Also, taking out a funeral plan and having your wishes written down can be a huge help to family at what is always a difficult time. On a lighter note, maybe you just need the services of a local tradesman to carry out some basic home maintenance, gardening or domestic chores. If so, then engage the services of businesses who have been established for a long time, offer time served tradespeople, whose staff are CRB checked and if in doubt 18 ask for identification.

The Psychology of Colours Change the colour of your room and improve your mood. Much like music, colour can alter your mood and behavior on a subconscious yet profound level — so profound, in fact, that researchers have spent years studying how the human brain responds to specific hues in various social settings. When it comes to your home, color may beat decor in terms of setting the vibe from room to room. So read on, pick your paint, and (happily, excitedly, or peacefully) kiss bare white walls goodbye.
Reds
BeverleyMag MAY 2014 is invigorating by day and cozy by night. A blend of two rousing colours, orange works well in social areas, especially foyers where people tend to mingle. But you may want to skip it in restful spaces, like your bedroom, unless it’s in small doses.
Yellows If you think about what is yellow — the sun, light bulbs, summertime daffodils — it makes sense that yellow is an energizing colour. The warm, welcoming shade stimulates the nervous system and promotes creativity — but proceed with caution. Studies have shown it can cause overstimulation, leading to feelings of anxiety, frustration, and anger. An accent wall in a pale Post-It-note hue in your kitchen or living room could be the perfect balance.
Aside from Big’s (of Sex and the City fame) infamous blood red bedroom accent wall, red paint is usually found in common areas — kitchens, living rooms, and most frequently, dining rooms — if at all. Seeing the stimulating colour has been linked to increased pulse rate, heart rate, and blood pressure, which explains why it’s often regarded as the colour of love, sex, and aggression. (Studies have shown that men are more attracted to women wearing red dresses versus other colours.) While the shade encourages socializing and bonding, making it a great fit for gathering spots, it may also prompt you to eat more. Darker, subdued tones (oxblood, for example) could potentially reduce those negative effects.

Don’t Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk I can hear her as if it were yesterday. I’d be pouring over a page of apparently impossible simultaneous equations or indecipherable poetry and mum would say, “Stop what you’re doing and go for a walk round the garden. You’ll think better after some fresh air.” And, do you know what? As mums so often are about these things; she was absolutely right.
So is there any actual science to back up this hunch? It would appear so. A recent article published by ‘Business Insider’ highlighted a study conducted by Marily Oppezzo, a Stanford doctoral graduate in educational psychology, and Daniel Schwartz, a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education which appears to prove that people are more creative when they are walking then when they are seated.
This piece of maternal advice has been my companion into adult life and even today if I need to solve a problem or organise my thoughts I go for a little walk.
Also, during my research I found that ‘Walk and Talk’ therapy is becoming increasingly popular among psychologists and counsellors as a way to encourage clients to problem solve. The idea behind this is that the multi-sensory experience and open spaces allow people to talk freely in a nonconfrontational setting.
It seems to me that walking is not only good for the body but also good for the soul. Those 10,000 steps we should be taking every day could not only put us on the path to bodily vitality but also on the road to higher planes of thought. Just think, your brisk stroll to collect the Sunday papers could be the catalyst for that Eureka moment to make you a millionaire. Famously, Beethoven created sonatas and symphonies while strolling through the verdant Vienna Woods and the late Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) was a great advocate of ‘walking meetings’. Furthermore, in addition to these masters of creativity I am not the only one giving my brain a walk to banish cranial congestion. A quick chat to a few members of Goole’s ‘Let’s Get Walking’ group (who meet on Mondays at 18:20 at West Park car park) revealed that if they went for a walk at lunchtime they felt refreshed and worked to a higher standard in the afternoon compared to if they had stayed at their desks. Another keen walker from the Rose and Crown walking club in Rawcliffe said that there was no doubt in their mind that a walk in the countryside while chatting to likeminded people cleared their heads and helped their thought processes.
23
On the other hand, Oppezzo and Schwartz’s study found that people didn’t necessarily have to be walking outside to stimulate creativity as people who walked on treadmills were also more creative than those who were not moving. I guess if you take the study and the anecdotal evidence to its natural conclusion then company directors should be following in the footsteps of Steve Jobs and taking their staff out of the ‘boredroom’ and down to the park for some blue sky thinking. is for Champney, Beverley benefactor John Edward Champney (pictured below in a painting by Fred Elwell) has a road named after him - where the Beverley Treasure House stands - he was an honorary freeman of the town in 1906. Born to noble parents in Beverley in 1846, Champney was educated in Rugby. He made his fortune in the textile industry in Halifax; at Ackroyd’s Mill - owned by his uncle Edward Ackroyd, who was a wealthy entrepreneur and philanthropist - and later took over the entire business. After the mill wound down, Champney moved to London where he met and married Margaret Huish and through her family became involved in the Fine Art Society. The Society introduced Champney to the then current art scene and was instrumental in shaping his collection, mainly under the influence of his brother-in-law, Marcus Bourne Huish, who was also a member. Champney was drawn to paintings by British artists such as John Ruskin, as well as the Pre-Raphaelites. A keen book collector, he owned between 7,000 and 8,000 books most of these belonging to his father which he inherited. Inspired by his uncle’s philanthropy work, Champney donated money for the construction of the Beverley Public Library. Upon his death in 1929, he bequeathed 4,500 volumes to the library including valuable early editions of Charles Kinsley’s The Water Babies and a copy of Gulliver’s Travels, inscribed to Champney by the illustrator Arthur Rackham. He also bequeathed a number of paintings to the art gallery’s collection.

Check Out Our Brand New Look!
We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?
Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)
There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!
Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.

FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. ARE MUMS OBSESSIVE?
I thought my head might explode the other day when I was trying to work out all the things I had to remember during a single week. There was a school trip (and packed lunch to sort out), 2 birthday parties (and presents and cards to buy) after-school activities, a parents’ evening, homework to supervise and, oh yes, that thing called work! So it got me thinking about why mums tend to be the ones to sort out all the ins and outs of their children’s lives. It’s not that dads don’t help, they do. I just think mums are either more tuned into it and/or are just expected to take care of things. Or perhaps it’s just that we worry obsessively and so take it upon ourselves to ensure every 30 eventuality is covered. Whatever the reason, I thank God for my Gruffalo wall calendar in the kitchen. I’ve probably mentioned it before (you know, the one with a column for each of us?) Without it, I’d be a complete disaster! GENDER SPECIFIC TOYS
What do you think of retailers who are dropping the labelling of toys as either just for boys or just for girls. It’s mainly down to the campaign group Let Toys Be Toys which has lobbied major brands to change their ways. They say children should just be allowed to play with whatever interests them – and I couldn’t agree more. But it shouldn’t mean that pink and camouflage should be banned outright. If girls want to be pink princesses, then that’s exactly what they should be. But if they want a dinosaur, a train set or a football, let them have that instead. And I say that as a mother whose daughter is a tomboy! Pink just doesn’t work in our house! Just let children be children. They grow up soon enough! Fiona x
