BeverleyMag May 2016 Dear Readers Welcome to the May edition of your Beverley Mag, I hope that you are all enjoying the nice weather and managed to glimpse the Tour de Yorkshire as it wheeled its way through Beverley and the surrounding villages. It is always good to see Beverley and East Yorkshire getting the exposure it deserves. Sometimes we take it for granted that we have so much beauty and places of interest on our doorstep - I for one will be getting on my bicycle this summer and enjoying the quietness and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Wolds and perhaps the odd stop off at a nice restaurant or pub... Hmmm sounds like a great plan to lose weight, get fit and enjoy myself! In this month’s edition we have a fantastic House & Home feature which includes advice on how to put up floating shelves and restyling your chimney breast as well as a wide and varied collection of advertisers that can help you achieve your dream home. We also have our regular Local Sports page, Gardening advice, Travel from Marion Owen as well as many other items of interest for you to read. We are giving a pair of tickets away for the Elvis World Tour at Sheffield Arena which is well worth seeing if you are an Elvis fan or just love spectacular shows. We would like to welcome Robyn Cleveland to Beverley Minster as Head Virger and we wish her well in her new position. Until next month - take care and enjoy the magazine Kind regards

Action on Floods As Beverley’s MP, preventing a repeat of the 2007 flooding is a top priority. Those devastating events are still fresh in my mind and it is certain that the risk will arise again at some point in the coming years – the key question is whether we will be better prepared when it does. With this in mind, I met Floods Minister Rory Stewart at the Department of the Environment in April to discuss flooding and coastal issues affecting the East Riding of Yorkshire. I was joined by Councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding Council cabinet member for asset management, housing and the environment.
Graham with The River Hull Advisory Board members
During the meeting the Minister reiterated his Department’s commitment to protecting the whole Humber region, which is of strategic importance nationally. The Government is investing a record £2.3 billion in England’s flood defences over a six year period, of which the Humber area can expect to benefit from around £350 million.
All government agencies, local and national, have important responsibilities to uphold. However, every one of us can play our own part in protecting our properties. In January I invited the Flood Advisory Service to bring their roadshow to Beverley. I recommend their website if you want to seek independent advice about flood risk affecting your property and the steps you can take to mitigate it.
This good news builds on the agreement of the River Hull Flood Risk Strategy last summer, which is now being implemented, and the entry into effect of the new Flood Re insurance scheme which will provide peace of mind for many homes and businesses that
would otherwise be hard to insure.

How to put up floating shelves Create extra storage or a stylish display area in any room with smart floating shelves, with DNfourteens easy how-to-guide.
Floating shelves are sleek, versatile and can provide invaluable extra storage if you lack floor space and just can’t squeeze in another piece of furniture. The brackets and fixings are hidden, making them ideal for minimal or contemporary schemes - there’s a place for them in every room in your home. Arrange them with pretty jars and canisters in the kitchen, use them to create a striking colour-coded display of books in your living room or make use of an alcove - the possibilities are endless! All you need to do is decide on the length required, how many shelves you want to put up and the finish (whether natural wood or sleek melamine) and you’re ready to get started.

Screws and fixings: 50mm screws and plastic Rawlplugs if fixing to stone walls; 40mm screws if fixing to wooden studs; 65mm metal plasterboard anchors if fixing to plasterboard Hammer
How to do it in 5 easy steps 1) Decide where in your room you want the floating shelf/shelves to go. Use a spirit level and a pencil to mark a horizontal line on the wall the same length as the shelf, as well as a vertical line in the centre.
place, checking one last time that it’s straight with the spirit level. 5) Slide the shelf onto the bracket. Fix in place with the screws provided, using the pre-drilled holes on the underside of the shelf. Check out Ikea, Tesco Direct and Homebase for a range of floating shelves.
2) Place the bracket on the horizontal line, using the vertical line to make sure it’s centred. Mark the position of the screw holes on the wall with the pencil. Then, using the wire/pipe detector, check the area of wall that you will be drilling has no cables or pipes. 3) Drill into the wall where your screw holes are marked (longer shelves will have more screw holes).

4) If your wall is made of brick or concrete, tap Rawlplugs into the holes with the hammer so they’re flush with the wall. Screw the bracket into

Weekend Project: Tile a Chimney Breast Artisan tiles are too beautiful just for the bathroom - use them to add a neoMoorish mood to the living room. How to: Start tiling from above the mantel, or, if you don’t have one, start from a baton levelled with a spirit level (not the skirting or floor as these can be uneven). Apply a thick layer of tile adhesive to the wall using a tile float (a metal spatula with a serracted edge). Use tile spacers, or, if the tiles are uneven, judge the space by eye. Grout tiles after placing them in position using a grouting float.
10
If you are looking to pick up reclaimed artisan tiles in the Hull and East Riding area you should check out local reclaimation yards, you can also get the look with new reproduction tiles which are available from the major suppliers.

Which Tradesman?
Choosing a suitable Tradesman can be a daunting task. This is a guideline. We will use the term Tradesman in the guideline to represent any or all services required. Give each Tradesman a detailed written description of the work to be carried out. and get written estimates from at least three different Tradesman. This ensures that each Tradesman has the same instructions to work and estimate on.
Ask each Tradesman to provide at least three references and check them. Try to view their work, and use your intuition to try and tell if this is a true representation of their work, not a friend or relative showing work another Tradesman did, ask lots of questions. If an expensive job is sought a written contract must be demanded by you covering all aspects of work to be undertaken, use of a solicitor is recommended. Make sure the Tradesman is adequately insured for any problems that could arise. Ask for their insurance certificate and take their details. If your still not happy call their insurance provider and check it up. Continued on page 14
Each estimate must include price, including a breakdown of labour and materials. Start time of job and a completion date, security and safety.

House & Home Feature Avoid a cash deposit - in most cases it shouldn’t be needed, if you do pay money up front or after each stage of a job, agree in advance how and when payment will be paid and keep to the agreement. Make sure you get a receipt for each payment. If you are having major building work carried out i.e. an extension on your house use the service’s of a building inspector and have the job signed off at key stages, the building inspector will arrange this. Don’t be hurried into a decision. If the Tradesman isn’t prepared to discuss your work, dont use them, you need to be able to communicate with your Tradesman to make sure you get what your paying for. If you feel that they are not carrying out your instructions stop them working an talk to them until you are satisfied they understand you.

Celebrations ...
18
2016 and 2017 year’s of big events and celebrations. Last month our own HRH the Queen enjoyed her 90th Birthday bringing the population together as crowds lined the streets of Winsor followed by the lighting of beacons around the country. I was in the town of Sherringham close to Sandringham in Norfolk and the community was buzzing as it got ready for their Royal themed event. Our Royal events at Marion Owen Travel are taking us north of the border this year to Dumfries House plus Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia, the latter which featured with such affection in film footage of our Queen over the years. Shakespeare's death was also 400 years ago and to mark this milestone there are many special events taking place making a visit to Stratford a little more special this year. Why not visit for a day or two it would make a great city break. July see’s the celebration of Amy Johnson, it is the 75th Anniversary and will be marked with our own local festival here in Hull. “A Moth for Amy”, there will be no excuse for not joining in, don’t miss following the trail of the moths around the city. Thursford’s Christmas Spectacular celebrates it’s 40th Anniversary this year! Always a sell out every year we are now selling our tours for 2017! This fabulous show is such a great way to start your festive season. WW1 continues to be a focus and there are many special exhibitions running through until 2018, we are planning another special tour in 2017 no doubt making one of our last stops at the Hull memorial at Oppy Wood. 2017 see’s Martin Luther’s 500th anniversary of the Reformation. A visit to this part of Germany is always historically interesting with added exhibitions this will be even more so next year. We have a tour in September 2017. Bastille day in Paris is an annual event on 14th July that is always worth a visit any year. As is the re-enactment of the Battle of Nantwich in Cheshire each January, this is becoming popular with our visitors to Warner’s historical Alvaston Hall. Many of our clients like to go that little bit further afield, or visit somewhere on their wish list for a special occasion. Whether a birthday, anniversary and often in the memory of someone special, having a holiday rather than a gift to remember the occasion. Thinking of getting married but not keen on the cost? Well if you would be taking a holiday anyway why not pick a nice hotel where the wedding comes free? I have been to a couple of weddings abroad and have to say they can be as relaxed or formal as you wish. Well as you read this I will have just returned from Japan, marking one of my milestones in life. An escorted tour is the best way to enjoy this destination and I was able to sit back and let someone else be in charge. Although not totally relaxed as I had a great group of regular guests and friends travelling along too! Make sure you have fun wherever & whenever you travel. At Marion Owen Travel we offer a full portfolio of holidays by all modes of transport so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us organise your next life enriching adventure. Marion

On the back of his success, Shawn embarked on an unprecedented world tour, performing to thousands of fans in theatres and arenas across the USA, South America, Europe and Australia.

Original Sweet Inspiartions band member Estelle Brown, 71, speaks about Elvis and working with Shawn:
“Working with Elvis was indescribable. It was absolutely fantastic and he was the perfect gentleman. He was just a humble guy, a really wonderful person. We used to say ‘hey boss, hey boss’ but he’d say ‘I’m not your boss, I’m your brother’. That’s how he was; we became a family. Just as people loved Elvis, Elvis loved people. He was a real people person. That was his life.” “Shawn is the closest that anyone will ever get to him. I’m not saying he’s exactly Elvis, but he’s as close as anyone will ever get. We have a wonderful time working together.” “Shawn’s a good singer, a good person and has a great attitude. He puts on a great show.” Don’t miss Shawn Klush on the UK leg of his 2016 World Tour... It simply doesn’t get any closer than this! Featuring original Elvis band members, orchestra and world leading Elvis tribute support.

Gardening
May Gardening Tips Along with all the flourish and splendour this month, weeds are thriving too, so keep on top of the situation; hoe on warm days and leave them on the surface to wither and die in the sun. Another constant task around the garden at this time of year is deadheading - remove spent flowers from containers, pots, hanging baskets, beds and borders and feed them all occasionally with liquid feed. Deadheading diverts energy from producing seed into producing new flowers... so is a good thing all round.
28
Theoretically we should be home and dry now weather-wise, but be prepared Brownie-style in
case of a late frost - keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast and don’t be tempted to put out your really tender plants out until the middle of the month unless the weather changes dramatically. If it’s dry, attack ground elder, lords and ladies and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves, and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Water is a precious commodity – instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water, however, for lime-hating plants such as camellias - they will not thank you for it! Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient, so consider installing one sooner rather than later. Watering is essential once the weather is drier and warmer - water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers

Gardening and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy) - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour - hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Beforehand, soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface.

Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Amazing Women
38
I am thrilled to once again be compering the Women of Achievement awards in November. Organised by Women in Business it is an event that never fails to inspire me. The stories of finalists and winners are not only moving, they motivate me to be a better person and a better businesswoman. Tickets for the event sold out in a matter of days but now is the time to think about women that go above and beyond what others do. If you know a woman like that, nominate them and give them the credit and recognition they deserve. Or if you are that woman, nominate yourself! The awards ceremony is also known for having a string of fantastic guest speakers over the years – and this year is no different. This year we have the wonderful journalist, television presenter and founder of Childline Dame Esther Rantzen. As a journalist myself I, for one, can’t wait to meet her.
Making The World A Better Place
Talking of being a better person and better businesswoman, I wanted to tell you about an amazing project that helps businesses of all sizes around the world give back in meaningful ways, creating longlasting impacts and an even greater sense of purpose. Imagine every time you had a meal, a hungry child also receives a meal….or if every time you had a cup of coffee someone received access to life-saving water….. or imagine every time you bought a book, a tree was planted……or when an accounting firm signed a new client, a family in Kenya receives goat to create a sustainable income. You get what I mean. Well B1G1 (Buy one, Give one) was established 9 years ago to do exactly that. There are literally hundreds of projects you can choose from and you decide how much you give – the smallest amount is about 70p – and every single penny goes directly to the people who need it most, changing their lives forever. It’s brilliant because it’s so simple. It’s like the café in Hull that encourages you to buy an extra coffee or meal which is given to a homeless person. If you want to know more, please visit www.b1g1.com.

Feel good in the skin you live in…
Appleton House, 3a Wednesday Market (opposite Boyes), Beverley. HU17 0DG.
NEW ADDITION TO OUR BODY SCULPTING TREATMENTS Welcome the low level laser therapy (LLLT)
Yes, we have yet another new arrival here at Rachel’s Beauty World, so it’s time to shift that fat and shape that body. So what is LLLT? LLLT is a totally non-invasive body contouring treatment, also known as the ‘lunchtime lipo’ due to the fact that there is no down time and no risk How does it work? LLLT emits low levels of laser energy at two different wavelengths, 940nm and 650nm, the first goes deep into the dermis of the skin and the second targets the epidermis of the skin. In the dermis the fat cells are targeted, breaking down the triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol. These are then taken away by the lymphatic draining system. This process only targets the fat cells and therefore does not affect the surround structures such as the skin or blood vessels. Epidermis of the skin is stimulated simultaneously by the other laser which increases circulation and promotes metabolism helping the body contouring process What will I feel like during the treatment? It is a very relaxing treatment, many people fall asleep. You will feel a warm, pleasant sensation.

Botox is Out - Radiofrequency Skin Tightening is Definitely IN Radiofrequency, the healthy alternative for skin rejuvenation And so say a rising number of celebrities that are opting for this treatment over the jab. Unlike botox, which injects a toxin into the skin making the muscles relax, RF (also called the Collagen Wave) kick-starts the body into producing collagen which, for most people, goes into decline at the age of 25. The cumulative effect of collagen stimulation results in tighter, younger looking skin. For best results this treatment is combined with the “Madonna Treatment” for a radiant looking complexion. This is an oxygen facial given after the RF treatment. Pressurised pure oxygen is used to push hyaluronic acid (the molecule that absorbs 1,000 times it molecular size in moisture) and antioxidants deep into your skin, rather than sitting on the surface like creams do.
