Fairer Funding for Schools In my first column back after the General Election, I want to say a sincere thank you to everyone across Beverley and Holderness who trusted me with their vote. It is a pleasure and a privilege to have been re-elected. One of the big challenges we face in the East Riding is securing fairer funding for our schools. The East Riding is the lowest funded local authority in England when it comes to education. This is the result of an unfair funding settlement which has built up over many years. Our authority loses out particularly severely because the settlement fails to reflect the additional costs associated with supporting lots of small schools across a sparsely populated county.

The East Riding is not alone in losing out from unfair funding. It is a member of the F40 Group, the campaigning body that represents a group of the lowest funded education authorities in England. F40 currently has 36 member authorities representing 2,375,313 pupils in 7,722 schools.
the Group’s campaign in Parliament, pursuing two key goals: first, to secure the additional £390 million ministers have allocated this year to support the lowest-funded authorities as a permanent part of the funding settlement, and second to oversee the introduction of a revised funding formula that awards funding based on need, and not historic political priorities. It will be a great challenge and I’m looking forward to getting started.
I was delighted to be elected as a Vice Chairman of the F40 Group at a meeting last month. I will lead

Here Comes The Rush!
Beverley Minster becomes a different kind of place this month as the holiday season really starts. For the first six months of the year the number of visitors each day can be counted in the dozens, but now, especially once the school holidays have started, this figure gets into the hundreds. We will have a rush of end-of-term school trips; then the foreign language schools based in Cottingham and other campuses in the East Riding will bring their charges to Beverley for the day, many more coach groups start arriving from Scarborough and then individual families add to their numbers. If the weather is glorious then many of these families will go to the seaside instead, but if it’s overcast and miserable they’ll come to us. We virgers try and guess how busy we’ll be, based on the weather forecast, but it’s far from being an exact science. All we need is for the weather to turn suddenly and we’ll be inundated with wet and agitated children and their parents.
6
And around this all we’re still running our normal programme of services and religious duties; baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc. Well, we’re still a busy church
after all - a fact that some of our visitors seem to find surprising. “Are you open on Sundays?” is a favourite question, to which the correct answer is: “yes, but not for roof tours or shopping – and when we’re holding a service we’d be grateful if you wouldn’t demand to be allowed to wander around taking photographs, thank you very much.” There’s plenty of time for that on the other six days of the week. FIND OUT ABOUT FOSTERING East Riding of Yorkshire Council is hoping to recruit more foster carers, particularly for children aged from five to 15. A ‘Find out about fostering’ information event will be held at the Hallmark Hotel, North Ferriby on Saturday 11 July, at 10.30am, when anyone who is considering becoming a foster carer is welcome to go along. In addition, potential foster carers can also find out more by watching a short film, which can be found by visiting the council’s webpage at www.eastriding. gov.uk/fostering and clicking on the video link. At the information event, people interested in becoming a foster carer will have an opportunity to talk to fostering social workers and discuss suitability; meet foster carers and their birth children; talk to looked after young people and hear about their experiences; and find out about free professional training.
8
Prospective foster carers should ideally be over 25, they can be single, married or co-habiting. People
with or without families, heterosexual, lesbian or gay, can be foster carers. Dave Glenville, the council’s fostering team leader, said: “Almost anyone can apply to be a foster carer. We recognise that families come in all shapes and sizes, but, as with any career, some people will be more suited to it than others. “The information event is designed to give people who are interested in fostering a chance to meet people who are already involved and find out if becoming a foster carer is for them.” Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a foster carer, or would like to book a place at the event, can contact the fostering team on (01482) 396673.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey areas
& William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of
people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ONE OF BEST YEARS YET FOR COMPOST GIVEAWAYS
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s annual compost giveaway enjoyed one of its most successful years yet – with around 5,000 bags given free to residents.
12
Nine giveaway events were held across the East Riding during May – and at some of the sites, including Bridlington, Driffield, Goole and Withernsea, as many as 200 cars queued at the busiest point to collect their two free 15kg bags of compost. All the compost given away had been recycled from the garden and food waste that local residents put into their brown bins. That includes grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat and egg shells – which can all be turned into compost for the garden. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said: “Our annual compost giveaways are a gesture from the council to say thank you to the residents of the East Riding for their efforts in recycling, especially their garden and food waste. “This year’s giveaways were hugely successful and just another example of how the council and residents are working together to improve recycling.” Giveaway events were also held at Beverley, Hornsea, Market Weighton, Elloughton and Preston.

Check Out Our Brand New Look!
We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?
Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)
There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!
To contact BEVERLEYMAG please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470 Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.

Heat sesame oil in a wok, add spring onions and chopped garlic and toss them on high flame for a minute. Add carrot, capsicum, cabbage and french beans (juliennes) and toss them on high flame for 2-3 min. Add the prepared soya sauce mix and combine well with the vegetables. Add the noodles and combine while tossing. I served the noodles along with a glass of mango juice.
Vegetable (Roti) Rolls: For vegetable filling: Finely chop cabbage, capsicum, onion and grate carrot. Heat olive oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add the finely chopped onions and fry for 3 mts. Next add rest of the vegetables and toss them they turn slightly soft, approx 4-5 mts. Add freshly ground black pepper pwd and salt to taste. Prepare rotis and roll them with the vegetable filling. I served them with papaya and a fruit based milkshake.
It’s hot and humid here at Bengal Brasserie and the past few days have been very light and easy on the stomach kind of meals. I find my appetite diminishing during this season and crave for light meals.

The following three recipes are quick, light and healthy (calcuim-rich) summer-time meals. They are by no means authentic or traditional but healthy nevertheless.
Vegetable Paneer Salad: Finely slice onions and capsicum. Chop paneer, cabbage, cucumber, french beans, carrots and tomatoes into small pieces. (I blanched beans and cabbage for a minute). Combine all of them in a large bowl. Prepare a dressing of curds/yogurt (with water drained), sweet mango chutney, roasted cumin powder. Combine this yogurt dressing with the vegetables along with coriander leaves and adjust the salt. I served this salad along with a glass of watermelon juice.

Frozen Summer Raspberry Pie
Makes: 8 servings • Time: 1hour 30mins This creamy, luscious pie is made by combining a fluffy cooked meringue with a raspberry puree, then pouring the mixture into a chocolate-cookie crust. Crust 32 chocolate wafers (6.5 ounces;, plus 1 for garnish) 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons skimmed milk 1 tablespoon butter Filling 3 cups raspberries, fresh or frozen(thawed) 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 large egg whites, at room temperature 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray.
22
2. To prepare crust: Process 32 wafers, confectioners’ sugar, olive oil, milk and butter in a food processor until finely ground. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of the prepared pan, creating an even, dense
crust. Bake for 12 minutes. Cool on a wire rack to room temperature, about 1 hour, pressing any puffed parts of the crust back into the pan. 3. To prepare filling: Meanwhile, puree raspberries, lemon juice and salt in a blender or food processor until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a medium bowl, pressing with a rubber spatula to extract the juice; discard seeds. 4. Bring 1 inch of water to a slow simmer in a large saucepan. Combine egg whites, granulated sugar and cream of tartar in a large stainless-steel bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy. Set the bowl over the simmering water and continue to beat on medium speed, moving the mixer around, until the mixture is glossy and thick, about 3 1/2 minutes. Increase the speed to high, and continue beating over the simmering water until very stiff and glossy, about 31/2 minutes more. Remove from the heat and continue beating on medium speed until room temperature, 3 to 5 minutes. 5. Fold the raspberry puree into the meringue until combined. Pour the raspberry filling into the pie crust; crumble the remaining chocolate wafer over the top. Place the pie on a level surface in your freezer and freeze until solid, at least 6 hours. To serve, let the pie stand at room temperature until softened slightly, about 10 minutes, before slicing.

Disputed Driver Q. My partner and I share a car. When we got back from holiday we found we’d got a speeding ticket, but we don’t know which of us was driving at the time. Will this have to go to court? A. You may be able to submit an informal appeal against the ticket, but if this is rejected in most cases you will have to attend a court hearing. You would have to be able to satisfy the magistrate that you have acted “with reasonable diligence” to find out who the driver was. This may be attempting to obtain photographs from the police or jointly providing details of your activities on the day the ticket was issued. Failure to provide such information is an offence in its own right.

Cruise from Hull ...
Will we get our own cruise terminal? It is said a cruise terminal would bring wealth to the East Riding and I agree but this will not occur by ships turning around in Hull carrying guests oversea’s but by bringing those from overseas to visit our county taking in our culture and spending in our shops. It would of course be nice to hop on board in Hull to sail around the world but we have a small catchment area and therefore it seems our port can only sustain a handful of cruises a year sailing from Hull. Our position in the UK favours travelling north hence itineraries are somewhat similar, but with a new ship it is a new experience and in 2016 we have the best ship ever to offer sailings from Hull. The Marco Polo has four sailings departing next summer from the port of Hull:15 May 8 nights to Norway 23 May 12 nights to The Baltic Capitals, 04 June 12 nights to Iceland & the Faroes 16 June 6 nights to the Scottish Isles & Faroes* All four of these cruises offer you super scenery and interesting ports of call. As with all cruises your meals and entertainment on board are included in your fare. Book early for these sailings and you only pay for 1 person the 2nd goes free when sharing a twin cabin. This bargain offer is due to finish on 31st July fares start at £939* total for 2, subject to availability when making your booking. Lynne & Beth have recently experienced the facilities on board the Marco Polo and where very impressed. She is an older traditional style of ship with sleek lines yet inside she is modern offering a good choice of comfortable public areas in which to relax. Should you wish to burn off those excess calories there is a gym and swimming pool. You will definitely not go hungry on board. There is a choice of dining either formally at your designated table (1st & 2nd sitting) in the lovely Waldorf Restaurant or should you prefer a buffet you can choose to eat in the casual Marco’s Restaurant. The cabins range from inside without any natural daylight which are the cheapest accommodation on board to the most expensive an elegant suite with a large sitting area. All cabins have ensuite facilities and ample storage for your luggage. Cruising is great for all ages and cruising from Hull offers a relaxing atmosphere for adults and is great for first timers. Embarking so close to home is wonderful not only is it easy but it cuts down on travelling costs too. With good support on these cruises you never know our number of sailings from our very own port of Hull may go up in years to come. Wherever in the world you are looking to experience do remember Marion Owen Travel. We can book all of your arrangements, do give my team a call. Gardening
Gardening Advice for July & August General tasks and garden maintenance The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year? Watering Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine. Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year. If possible, set up an automatic watering system
40 for your vegetable plot, borders and even
containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose! If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily.

Gardening Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean - green algae can be toxic to pets. Weeding Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth. Deadheading Carry on cutting back perennials and deadhead all dying and spent flowers on annuals, roses and shrubs; not only will your garden look immeasurably tidier, but the plant will be prevented from putting energy into the seed and may be encouraged to reflower. When deadheading roses, cut the stem down
with sharp secateurs; just breaking off old flowerheads will leave the rose vulnerable to infection. It’s too late to spray roses for blackspot now - once established spraying will not help. Pick off infected leaves and burn; do not put them on a compost heap where the spores will spread the disease. Pruning Trim back lavender and rosemary after flowering

Gardening without cutting too far into the old wood and summer prune wisteria by shortening wispy sideshoots to about 20cm. Soak the soil with a high potash fertiliser if your wisteria’s flowering performance was a bit feeble. Collect seed heads Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs, rock plants, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have collected is fantastically rewarding, but you need to be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry. Take cuttings Cuttings of perennials and bedding plants will root well at this time of year and quickly become strong enough to overwinter inside.
hold in place in soil enriched with a little potting compost and wait for it to root.
Train a long flexible shoot to ground level, cut a shallow sloping slit in it, dust the cut surfaces with hormone rooting powder, peg down to
Trim hedges Keep hedges neat and under control for both their appearance and good relations with the neighbours!

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS? Yes it’s that time of year again! The time when we have to start organising what to do with the children for 6 weeks (or 7 as it is this year!) while we try to carry on working! The summer holidays will be here before you know it, so now is the time to start planning! I say it to myself every year – and while I manage to figure out most of the summer season, there are always a couple of weeks where last minute arrangements have to be made! We’re not all perfect!! So this year I am aiming for military precision! Regular readers will know all about my kitchen calendar (the one with columns for everyone so I know who is doing 46 what, where, which day and at what time!) so I plan to have every week marked off! We probably all try to take at least 2 weeks off during that time. That leaves 4 or 5 weeks to sort out. Holiday clubs? Activities? Childminders? Not to mention it can all get a tad expensive. On top of that, how guilty do you feel that you can’t take all summer off? And if your children are like mine, they like it best when we can do things as a family! I know some parents who already have everything sorted – I wish! If you are one of those, why not share some of your great ideas with us lesser mortals? Thanks in advance! Fiona x
