BeverleyMag November 2015 Dear Readers Welcome to the November edition of your Beverley Mag. In this month’s edition we have lots of local news as well as a great Cottingham feature which covers the many different types of businesses and events that make it a wonderful place to shop and visit. I would certainly encourage you to go for a look as we have only shared the tip of the so-called ice berg with our feature. I often visit with my girlfriends for shopping, lunch and the odd glass of wine. In the summer we went to the Springboard Music Festival which was amazing - and all this is only a short drive away from Beverley. Speaking of Beverley, by the time this lands on your door mat the first phase of shops should be open in Flemingate with the Debenhams due to open on 3rd November. We look forward to the whole development opening up and hope that it brings new brands and retailers to our town and not just another set of coffee shops! I also hope that the new development encourages visitors to visit our existing shops in North Bar, Toll Gavel and The Wednesday & Saturday Markets bringing much needed footfall to these lovely shops and restaurants that make Beverley such a fantastic place to visit. We have tickets to give away for the Strictly Come Dancing Tour at the Sheffield Arena and to see The Searchers at Hull City Hall in our competitions. We also have lots of great articles together with a bag full of local news items and an update from our local MP. We are still looking for a contributor for the magazine who can supply articles on local history - so do get in touch, we would love to hear from you. The gardening feature is, as always, a wealth of knowledge that can help to keep everything in check over the winter months. If you have a story that needs to be told you can email me at: ask@beverleymag.co.uk Kind regards
Jane Editor

Better Broadband! Last week I spoke out in Parliament about the need for better broadband provision for rural businesses. 25% of all businesses in England are based in rural areas, a higher proportion than that of the population. Rural businesses are vital to our country’s economy, but are currently being held back by poor broadband coverage. One major local employer based in a rural part of Holderness had to invest tens of thousands of pounds to install a fast, reliable broadband connection, putting it at a major disadvantage with its urban competitors; our many holiday parks need to offer reliable wi-fi to attract customers; we have farmers, designers, breweries and schools, to name but a few, who need to get online quickly and reliably to do business, and slow copper wire broadband is just not sufficient. It is clear that whether you have a business in the city or in the countryside, fast broadband is now an essential utility. Yet too many businesses in rural areas don’t have access to the broadband they need to expand and take on more employees.
4
Last year just 14% of the properties in Beverley and Holderness had access to superfast broadband. Thanks to the Government’s investment and the hard work of the East Riding of Yorkshire
Council, this figure is improving – but there is still work left to do. Over the past year, I have met representatives from Sky, BT, Broadband Delivery UK, and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and urged them to get on with delivering the Government’s target for 95% superfast broadband coverage by 2017. Broadband provision is a vital issue for rural areas like Beverley and Holderness, and I will continue to challenge the providers, the Council and the Government to install this vital infrastructure which families and businesses rely on. Minding the Minster
Concert, Carols & Celebrations! The nights have drawn in, the days are getting much shorter and Beverley Minster is closing earlier. For the virgers this means that we shut the doors at around 3.45 most afternoons, so the building is dark and empty while most people are still at work. Of course, we virgers are still at work as well, although it’s different to what we were doing earlier in the year. Now we have a chance to catch up on those little jobs that the pressure of visitors prevents us doing during the longer opening hours. People seem to object to
6
us noisily vacuuming during their visits: with no one around there’s no one to disturb and so we can get on and coax out the spiders and cobwebs from spaces where they’ve taken root for the past few weeks (months!) and restore the building to the condition we would like it to be in. There’s always a lot of dust in a building like ours: mud brought in on the shoes of visitors and congregations mixes with stone dust that is, atom-by-atom, detaching itself from the ceiling above. Now we get a chance to get it all in the dustbags where it belongs instead of floating around willy-nilly. But this peace doesn’t last long. Soon it will be December – a month packed with concerts, carol services, celebrations, special events and visitors. I’m afraid it might get a bit dusty again –apologies. We’ll start spring cleaning again in January.
Is your conservatory TOO COLD to use this winter? An insulated ceiling from Inceil will transform your conservatory so it is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer - so you can enjoy your conservatory all year round. Affordable, effective and fitted in just 2 days

WORLD CLASS FLAMENCO JAZZ GUITARIST COMING TO BEVERLEY EDUARDO NIEBLA IN CONCERT at Toll Gavel United Church, Beverley Thursday 26th November 2015, 7.30pm Accompanied by Matthew Robinson (guitar) & Dharmesh Parmar (Indian tabla) This year symbolises a new chapter for the flamenco jazz virtuoso and composer Eduardo Niebla, as he takes to the stage in Beverley on 26 November 2015 with his stunning trio. It gives Eduardo an opportunity to preview music from his highly anticipated new album, which he is now recording, as well as his back catalogue spanning over four decades.
8
Eduardo makes music that transcends genres and crosses barriers, fusing flamenco gypsy jazz with classical and Indian nuances that are quite breathtaking. Moreover it is his heart-rending lyricism that brings a truly poetic quality to Eduardo’s music and a dynamic energy that makes each concert unbelievably invigorating.
the international concert stage. And the future looks exciting for Eduardo Niebla as he emerges into the live arena once more – an artist at the top of his game.
Over the years Eduardo has collaborated with many musicians including: the late Lol Coxhill (sax), the Dante String Quartet, trance phenomenon Juno Reactor, George Michael, Craig David, sitar maestro Nishat Khan and producer Tom Newman, performing on

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey areas
& William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of
people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COUNCIL APPROVES A SIXTH YEAR OF FREE CHRISTMAS PARKING Free parking will again be available in councilrun car parks and on-street parking locations for the three weekends running up to Christmas, following the unanimous approval of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet. It means that pay and display machines in these locations will be clearly marked to let shoppers preparing for the festive season know there is no charge for the weekends of 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20 December. The start of the scheme will once again coincide with ‘Small Business Saturday’ a national day that aims to promote the importance of small and independent traders. Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, said: “Thanks to its prudent financial management, the council is able to run this very popular scheme for a sixth year.”
“Free parking has real and tangible benefits for local businesses and for residents and it is quite fitting that the first day will again fall on Small Business Saturday, a national initiative that this authority is delighted to support.” “The East Riding is home to some of the most vibrant and diverse market towns in the country and suspending parking charges in the run up to Christmas is a practical way for this council to help boost the local economy.” All council car parks will be free on Saturday 5, 12 and 19 and Sunday 6, 13 and 20 December, from 8am on Saturday until 8am on Monday. Normal parking rules still apply, such as those around disabled parking bays and maximum stays.

RESIDENTS INVITED TO HAVE SAY ON COUNCIL’S SPENDING PRIORITIES Residents are being urged to complete an online survey which will go towards shaping the spending priorities of East Riding of Yorkshire Council. As part of the budget process, the council must consider how it can reduce costs or deliver services in a different way and feedback from this survey will help the council prioritise funding for services. The Government’s funding reductions in the public sector, including local authorities are set to continue until at least 2019/20. Despite this, the council has made savings of £118million since 2010/11 although a further £76million of savings is required over the next four years. Councillor Stephen Parnaby, OBE, leader of the council, said: “The council continues to receive significantly less Government funding per head of population than urban authorities, our neighbours in
the Humber region and the average for similar authorities. “We are facing some tough economic times ahead and the online survey is an important way for the public to let us know what they think and how they feel the council should prioritise its spending. “The survey should take around 10 minutes of people’s time so I would urge people to take this opportunity to complete the survey and let us know their views.” The survey can be found at www.eastriding.gov.uk/budgetsurvey and the closing date for all responses is Sunday, 6 December 2015. * The budget event which is being held at East Riding Leisure Beverley on Thursday, 26 November is now fully booked.

UNLOCKING FAMILY HISTORY AT THE TREASURE HOUSE With the 1939 Register expected to be published online later this month, the world of family history is abuzz at the prospect of a mine of information about our near ancestors becoming available for the first time. Census records have proved to be the vital key to unlocking family history for millions of people, and this latest addition will shed even more light on our genealogical past. The Treasure House, in Beverley, is the East Riding’s focal point for family history, where people go everyday to research their ancestors and get expert advice. In the research room can be found any number of people eagerly trawling the internet in search of the latest clues on their personal journey of genealogical discovery. But venture further still into that room and even more family historians will be searching ‘offline’ in the East Riding Archive.
18
The original documents at the Treasure House are literally a treasure trove of family history information not found anywhere else, and for those historians who can’t wait for
the online release of the 1939 Register, it may be worthwhile visiting the Treasure House to see if they can unearth their own personal gems. Staff have unveiled a small sample of the kind of original documents found in the archive, and these are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’. The National Register was set up in 1939, and during World War Two the National Register of ID cards was introduced and ran for 13 years until being scrapped in 1952 by Sir Winston Churchill, with the National Register becoming the NHS Register. A small number of these cards can be found at the Treasure House among the personal archive collections of various East

Local News Riding people, and any family historian with a connection to these people would find the information on the ID cards of great interest. Archivist Sam Bartle said: “The cards give a full address history so you can potentially track an ancestor’s movements during the period that National Registration was in force. These personal archives also often contain other documents such as certificates and letters, but such collections are relatively rare and you’d need to check your ancestor’s name against our online archive catalogue to see if they have a personal archive.”
A small number of ‘alien’ registration cards are also open to viewing and might shed some light on your ancestor if he or she was an immigrant to the East Riding, and one or two early census records for 1831 and 1811 do still survive for certain East Riding villages. But for those who want to delve further into their family’s past without searching through original documents, the records of baptisms, marriages and burials in the East Riding are also available online through findmypast.co.uk , which can be searched for free at the Treasure House. For more details call (01482) 392790.
Even if they don’t, there’s still a chance that they might crop up in one of the many historic documents and registers in the East Riding Archives and you can search the online catalogue at http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/CalmView/ to check before you visit the Treasure House. 20

Amazing culture close to home ..
It is not everyone’s cup of tea these days to have a relaxing beach holiday. Often to find real local culture you feel you have to travel to far away countries. Italy still retains so much charm and within a three hour flight you can be soaking up the local atmosphere. If you are looking for something different I have a gem of a village in Tuscany which will offer a very different fabulous break. The little hotel has just 9 rooms, at the door it says 3 star but you will receive 5 star hospitality. Family run by 3 generations everywhere you look there is a smiling face. The food is produced from local produce and I would be surprised if anyone does not add a few pounds ~ well you are on holiday. All meals are included during your stay and even breakfast is a wonderful banquet. The village has been reinvented to ensure it survives in this remote location. It is a charming place and located above a stream with a pretty bridge surrounded by stunning scenery along with a natural swimming pool. If you do the cookery course then during your week you can enjoy 5 x 2 hour cooking lessons, I enjoyed making pasta during my stay but risotto, cakes, bread & how to do a proper Carbonara are also taught. The Carbonara is unlike any you have seen before. Of course if you are not into cookery walking would be a super alternative option. Truffle hunting with the dogs is not to be missed! This gives, fresh air & exercise plus the excitement of the dogs hunting out the truffles in the woods. We found both black & white varieties on our hunt, the smell is strong a little like roasted garlic. I tasted plenty freshly grated onto my food. Olive oil tasting including fresh from the press went down well as did wine tasting including a unique white wine produced in the old Roman way in pots buried under the soil. For stress relief you could join in a Yoga class it certainly made us feel good in fact we all said we would have liked to do it everyday. The village runs an Italian language school. If you are not intending to take the language so seriously, you will return having learnt a number of words as Mama & Grand Mama love to chatter away in their native tongue! It is hard to describe this wonderful place, the best way is to visit for yourself at any time of the year you will return home rejuvenated and had the most wonderful experiences including a visit to the worlds smallest volcano! The aim of the event is to promote the fantastic local food and drink producers, whilst boosting the local economy. Once again several thousand people attended and the event was a great success COTTINGHAM OPEN GARDENS 2016 Following the success of this year’s Open Gardens, it has been decided to repeat the event next year and around 20 gardens opened their doors on two Sundays in June, date to be confirmed. Minding The Business The Cottingham & District Traders Association is very active supporting and promoting local businesses. The aim is to improve Cottingham’s shopping experience along with the overall ambience. Working closely with East Riding Council, Cottingham Parish Council and many other Cottingham based groups. We meet on a regular basis at the King William IV to discuss ways in which we can further promote the area and increase business into Cottingham. Our door is always open to any business in Cottingham.

We are now also spreading our membership further afield to businesses who work with, supply or support the Cottingham people and our aim is to be very “enterprising” bringing out the best Cottingham has to offer.
incrasing our donation from £250 to £500. The village is constantly evolving as it grows. It is well documented to being one of the largest villages in the UK with over 150 retail businesses, it can easily be mistaken for a town as it is far bigger than most others in the area. Cottingham is unique with nearing 20,000 residents, whilst retaining a friendly, village atmosphere. It is lovely to see so many people speak to each other as they browse the very wide variety of shops, cafes, boutiques, restaurants and public houses. Many events take place during the year, all of which draw in thousands of people. These events include the Cottingham Day celabrations, The Cottingham Springboard Music Festival, The Folk Festival and the very prestigious Food & Drink Festival. The weekly Thursday market is now growing with new stalls arriving each week offering a huge variety of produce and wares.
We have supported many local groups over the past few years As an example this year we have doubled our support for the Cottingham Lights Groups, by
The Civic Hall is regularly full with craft fairs and charity days. Cottingham is a vibrant village with more to offer than most expect. The CTA membership starts at only 10 per year (£25 with a presence on our very informative website). We are open to all businesses with no barriers on what is right or wrong. Meetings are held very informally and low key – The emphasis on meeting with other traders and working together to promote Cottingham and all it has to offer.

Cottingham Feature The results came that afternoon. We were greeted by numerous doctors and nurses and the news they gave us changed our lives forever. We were going to lose our little girl. Ellie Mai was born on February 5, 2006 to parents John and Lisa. She was a beautiful little girl who loved everything in life. She loved helping people and always put money in charity boxes and gave it to buskers. Ellie loved going to London to the theatres and Hamleys, playing with her best friends at school, swimming, baking, face-painting and dancing. She was very rarely ill. In January 2012 Ellie became wobbly. Her left hand became difficult to use and her temperament changed. We went to the doctors and presumed it was an inner-ear infection. Then she was sent home from school for falling. The next day we rang for an ambulance and Ellie was admitted to Hull Royal Infirmary. The following day, on her sixth birthday, Ellie had a CAT scan. We had to cancel her birthday party, which made her extremely upset. The scan showed a small abrasive tumour and that afternoon we went to Leeds General Infirmary where Ellie had an MRI scan the following day.
26
Ellie had an aggressive diffuse pontine glioma – a brain tumour. This particular one was very rare and incurable. The prognosis was that Ellie had a maximum of a year to live. The following day Ellie had an operation to insert an accessible portacath in her right side. This would be used for medication, blood transfusions and blood tests. When Ellie came round after the operation she was very poorly and upset. We both gave up work to spend every second we could with our precious daughter. Ellie then underwent six weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Jimmy’s in Leeds. For the radiotherapy there was a mask attached to Ellie’s head and then attached to a table. We stayed for most of the six weeks at Eckersley House, a home in Leeds for sick children, but all Ellie wanted to do was go home to her cat, Daisy. Once the treatment was finished we had a long wait until June for another MRI scan which showed the tumour had shrunk a little. Ellie had a five-day course of chemotherapy every month. Ellie wanted to do the things she did before she was ill. She attended school every now and then, usually for half-days as she became tired quickly. She spent a lot of time with our family and Aislinn, her best friend forever. Continued on page 28

Cottingham Feature Thanks to all the community support we were able to take Ellie to lots of places. The MakeA-Wish Foundation sent us to Disneyland in Paris but with our luck as it was the princesses and other characters went on strike and the tea party was cancelled. We then went to Menorca, a farm in Devon and to London several times to go to the theatre and Hamleys. On December 11 we went to Lapland thanks to the When You Wish Upon A Star charity. Towards November Ellie’s wobbliness returned and her hands became weak again. The doctor decided to take her off chemotherapy as it was no longer helping. We knew then she would probably go downhill quite fast. Ellie still never complained or asked questions. She just got on with being her loving, cheery self.
Ellie Mai’s fund achieves charitable status Beverley residents may not be aware of the Ellie Mai Fund, which was set up by John and Lisa Mowforth of the Duke of Cumberland Public House in Cottingham, after the death of their beloved daughter Ellie Mai from a rare brain tumour. Originally set up as a fund to raise money in Ellie Mai’s name for ‘Wish upon a Star’ and ‘Brain Tumour Trust’, the fund has now received charitable status and continues to support good causes both locally and nationally. John and Lisa of the Duke of Cumberland, set up a tea room in the pub in memory of Ellie Mai, and it has proved a huge hit with shoppers in Cottingham. John added: Lisa had always wanted to run her own team room. She wanted to run it with Ellie, but now it is our daughters legacy” www.elliemaifund.co.uk
After our Lapland trip she started to become ill. She was being sick, complaining of headaches, struggling to walk unaided and the problems with her hand were limiting what she could do. She was taken to Martin House Children’s Hospice where she was placed on a syringe driver which gave her a constant medicine supply. We got to Christmas and New Year but then we barely moved off the
28 settee. Ellie’s medicines were having to be increased more and more often. In her last few days she was unable to eat or drink and she struggled with going to the toilet. She was sleeping between 15 and 18 hours a day and she lost her speech. Not knowing what she was saying broke all our hearts and frustrated and hurt her. We ended up trying to write things down.
Ellie was such an amazing, brave little girl and a fighter. The nurses called her unique, and “a one-off.” She kept beating all the odds. We said goodbye four times but she fought so hard and kept proving everyone wrong. In the last week she insisted on visiting Bridlington, feeding the ducks, going to her favourite shop and even though she was so poorly on the Thursday she insisted on going to the Post Office to buy Lisa a lollipop. The following day we had the rare thunder snow and that night Ellie became unconscious. She slipped away in Lisa’s arms on Sunday 20 January 2013. Ellie is now with the angles and out of pain, but we miss her so much. If you would like to help other children like Ellie in anyway please visit the following website: www.elliemaifund.co.uk

Autumn Recipe
Red Lentil, Chilli & Chicken Soup For many of us Autumn is the season that screams dark nights, bonfires and delicious warming food but believe it or not it doesn’t have to be unhealthy! I’ve rustled up a recipe here in my kitchen that I found on a handwritten piece of paper inside an old cookery book I bought at a jumble sale in Beverley thirty years ago. I am super “chuffed” that I can now get to share it with you. Here’s what you need to get you started; Saucepan, Chopping board, Knife, Spoon and a Blender Now on to the ingredients... 1 red onion, chopped 2 tsp cumin seeds 140g split red lentils Large pinch of chilli flakes 1 tbsp olive oil 800ml vegetable stock large handful of kale, roughly chopped 400g can of chopped tomatoes A pinch of salt & pepper 200g chicken, cooked and diced Now here’s where the hard work starts... grab yourself a large TANDOORI

Motoring News
Introducing the Nissan IDS Concept Nissan has just unveiled its new IDS autonomous electric concept car at the Tokyo Motorshow. The company said the IDS was the next step of its plan to launch a number of autonomous vehicles by 2020. The car has both piloted and manual drive modes, with an interior that changes depending on which mode it is in. In the piloted self-driving mode, the seats rotate inward, and the steering wheel recedes into the dashboard, giving the driver space to relax. Unlike many automated car concepts, the IDS is designed to be personalised, even when it’s doing the driving. Nissan claimed that “when the driver selects Piloted Drive and turns over driving to the vehicle, the car’s performance -- from accelerating to braking to cornering – imitates the driver’s own style and preferences”. Nissan said it had made long-distance driving a priority for its electric car designs, and claimed the its 60kWh battery, in combination with a lightweight and aerodynamically designed carbon-fibre body was
32
“designed to also meet the need to drive long distances”, although the exact length of said distances isn’t currently specified. “We are pursuing improved electric powertrain technologies, such as motors, batteries and inverters, which will enable us to mass produce and market [electric vehicles] that equal or surpass the convenience of petrol-powered cars,” executive vice president Hideyuki Sakamoto told Nissan shareholders. “By the time Nissan intelligent driving technology is available on production cars, [electric vehicles] will be able to go great distances on a single charge,” said Nissan design director Mitsunori Morita. “Getting to this point will, of course, require the further evolution of batteries, but aerodynamic performance is also very important. We incorporated our most advanced aerodynamic technology in the design of the Nissan IDS concept.”

Gardening
Gardening in November In November the autumn is finally here the clocks have gone back and it feels colder. It’s still a beautiful time of year though, with the trees changing colour. Leave carrots in the ground until needed. To make lifting easier, cover the ground with a 15cm (6in) layer of straw, cardboard or bracken held down with netting or horticultural fleece. Apart from in very cold areas, carrots will keep in the ground until March if necessary. Overwatering, fluctuating temperatures and draughts are the main problems for indoor plants as winter approaches. In centrally heated homes, brown leaves and leaf drop are common problems, so reduce watering and check room temperatures. Now that many plants are returning indoors for the winter, regularly check for pests such as aphids, red spider mite, mealy bug and scale insects. Especially unwelcome visitors include vine weevil grubs which feed on plant roots, causing wilting and often plant death.

Water recently planted evergreens during dry spells, even in winter as they can dry out in windy conditions. Check for dryness even after rain, as it may not penetrate down to the roots sufficiently. Plant out rhubarb crowns in an open position from November to March as long as the ground is not frozen. Continued on Page 42

Gardening Cut back herbaceous plants that are not needed for winter interest or food and habitat for wildlife but leave ornamental grasses to provide protection for overwintering beneficial insects. Protect planted containers with bubble plastic or bring under temporary cover, particularly during prolonged rain when compost can become sodden - this is especially important for recently planted hardy annuals.. If cold weather looks likely try and lag pots and containers as even if the plant is hardy, root systems above ground may not survive. Remove pot saucers and raise pots off the ground on pot feet. Take root cuttings of plants such as Japanese anemones, campanula (pictured right), phlox and oriental poppies. Check bonfires before they are lit for sheltering and hibernating
animals, such as hedgehogs, toads and frogs. Plant tulip bulbs now – later than most bulbs, but a late planting may help reduce problems with the disease tulip fire. Use only healthy, undamaged, mould-free bulbs and plant at a depth of two or three times the bulb height. Divide hearty perennials such as daylilies, Michaelmas daisies and golden rod. Cut them down to 4, dig them up and divide carefully. If your soil is heavy clay, leave this job until springtime. All other perennials are also best left until the spring, especially

peonies which dislike being split in cold weather and grasses. Cut back ornamental grasses and bamboos; if the latter are thick enough, the canes can be used as supports next season. Brighten your borders, hanging baskets and containers with winter bedding such as pansies, violas, primroses and cyclamen. Winter is tough for birds - as temperatures fall, regular supplies of food and fresh water become ever more important to help them survive the cold months and emerge in good condition for the breeding season next year.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
UPGRADING YOUR PHONE At the time of writing I am in the process of upgrading my iPhone 5 to an iPhone 6s. You would think it was simple – and perhaps for some of you it would be! According to Apple it’s an extremely simple process! Perhaps it’s just because I’m slightly worried that all my contacts won’t migrate across. Anyway, first of all I had to back up everything on my old phone. So after figuring out that when I sync my phone with my computer it also backs it up (I wasn’t sure if it did both, but after a bit of 46 googling I worked it out!) I then had to work out how to swap my sim card because my new phone comes with a 4G sim. I am currently waiting for my old sim to stop working so that I can activate my new sim, at which point I can start setting up my new phone. That, apparently, could take up to 24 hours! So I feel like I’m in limbo! Fortunately I have found a really good step-by-step guide on a technical blog to make the process easier. There are 10 steps and I am only up to step 3! So perhaps next month in my column, if all does not go well, I will be having a proper rant about losing half of my contacts!!!
SLEEPS TO CHRISTMAS! I was reliably informed the other day by my 8 year old daughter that there were 58 days, 2 hours, 47 minutes and 18 seconds until Christmas day, courtesy of my Christmas app. Of course, she was utterly oblivious to the fact that it was 1 hour, 13 minutes and 42 seconds past her bedtime! If only there was an app for that!
