Campaign for fresh air! A challenging problem which affects Beverley and Holderness is provided by the treatment of sewage and waste water from our area and from Hull. Yorkshire Water has an important treatment works based at Saltend. This has been a long-running source of frustration owing to the horrible smells which have affected local residents at intervals for more than a decade – including this summer. I have campaigned for the company to clean up its act since I was elected, having met senior Yorkshire Water officials, raised the issue with ministers in Parliament and urged East Riding Council to do whatever is necessary to incentivise the company to solve the problem, which worsens during the summer at the very time local people want to be outdoors. Progress was made in 2011 when a new £3 million odour control unit was installed at Saltend, but the smell keeps rearing its head.

4

I am therefore delighted that East Riding Council have now served an abatement notice on Yorkshire Water, ordering them to take action to address the odour problem at Saltend. I am also pleased that the Council has ordered a formal inquiry into the issue, and

I gave evidence to councillors in mid-September. The Council’s actions mark a major breakthrough for local people, who have campaigned long and hard to draw attention to how their lives have been blighted. I am also aware that the problem is not limited to Saltend. I know Beverley residents have had to put up with smells this summer from Yorkshire Water’s Beverley water treatment plant, and I urge residents not to suffer in silence if they notice any problems. Yorkshire Water are doing an essential job but everyone has the right to clean air. Minding the Minster

Experts, Amateurs and Bodgers! It’s the calm before the storm in Beverley Minster this month. Visitor numbers have been quietly dropping overall from the August peak, although individual days in September can still be very, very busy if we have a couple of coaches coming into Beverley. Without these coachloads, however, the daily torrent can become a trickle for several hours on the trot. At that point I start to feel sorry for the welcomers, who perform a marvellous job during the year. These volunteers – and we must have around 40 of them on call – come to the Minster for several hours a week to, literally, welcome people into the building. Most people really appreciate it when a friendly face says ‘hello’, gives them a leaflet and then suggests where they might look first to get a full impression of our magnificent structure. Not everyone, mind. The look of terror when some people imagine they’re about to be pounced on and asked for money is quite unsettling, although it’s nice watching them relax when they realise our people are only there to help them. However, while the hours can just fly by when there’s a constant stream of visitors it’s rather less interesting in quiet periods. That’s when we hope the welcomers

will enjoy having a good look around the building for themselves, discovering some more of the many visual treats they haven’t already found. I’ve been working there, on a daily basis, for quite a few years and I’m still discovering unexpected treasures among the craftsmanship on display. One of the welcomers, who has been studying the building literally stone-by-stone for the past decade, keeps dragging me around to see something else he’s only found that day. It’s a truly fascinating building, built over the centuries by experts, amateurs and bodgers. Why not pop in and explore it now it’s a bit quieter? You’ll be sure of a warm welcome if you do. VETERAN IS FIGHTING FIT THANKS TO LEISURE TEAM An ex-serviceman who is recovering from a devastating brain injury has paid tribute to the health and fitness professionals at East Riding Leisure Beverley whom he credits with helping to transform his life. And with Older People’s Day taking place on Thursday 1 October he wants to encourage older residents, including those who are recovering from illness or injury, to discover how their local leisure centre could do the same for them. Older People’s Day is a national awareness campaign designed to tackle stereotypes by celebrating the abilities and achievements of older people. Two years ago Norman Harrison, 70, of Beverley was left unable to walk, talk or swallow after damaging a neck artery and suffering bleeding on the brain while holidaying in France with his wife Barbara.

8

After undergoing life saving surgery and spending three weeks in a coma in the intensive care unit at Tours Teaching Hospital, in France, Norman was

flown back to Hull Royal Infirmary to start the long road to recovery. Norman, who served in the army for nine years and spent 30 years working for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) ending his career as an acting Major, said: “If someone had said to me two years ago ‘you are going to suffer a minor stroke and then you’re going to be like this’ I wouldn’t have believed it. I was as fit as a fiddle before this happened, I could do anything.” It was several months before Norman was well enough to be transferred to East Riding Community Hospital Beverley where his intense daily programme of physiotherapy continued, eventually enabling him to

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey areas

& William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of

people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

In Safe Hands programmed over 10 weeks, with the help and guidance of specially qualified instructors. By the start of 2014 Norman was attending East Riding Leisure Beverley twice a week, working with personal trainer James Peacock to build up his strength and fitness. “James has achieved more with me in 18 months than the Army did in nine years,” said Norman who follows a circuit in the Tone Zone which features a treadmill, static bike and weight machines. Norman has enjoyed his return to fitness so much that he now has a regular membership to the leisure centre and looks forward to his twice-weekly training sessions.

return home. At home, and walking with the aid of a frame, Norman’s physiotherapist suggested he ask his GP to be referred onto the exercise referral scheme which is available at all East Riding of Yorkshire Council leisure centres. The scheme, which is part funded by the council’s public health service, promotes behaviour change which includes physical exercise, nutrition and motivation.

10

Participants are entitled to 20 sessions of activity

He would advise anyone in a similar position, including older residents or those recovering from illness or injury, to discover how their local leisure centre could help them transform their lives too. “It has changed my life, it has been unbelievable. Anybody who is cocooned at home, if they can get down to the leisure centre and do some exercise they should do it because once they have they will want to come again and again. It really has revolutionised my life,” he added.

In Safe Hands Dr Tim Allison, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s director of public health, said: “This is a perfect example of how the exercise on referral scheme can help people like Mr Harrison in their recovery from injury or illness. We are continuing to work with our colleagues in leisure to help residents across the East Riding improve their health and wellbeing.” A wide range of facilities are available, alongside a hugely varied programme of classes, at the council’s leisure centres right across the East Riding. This includes ‘Sport and Recreation’ sessions, which are aimed at beginners or the over 50s, during which customers can take advantage of several dry-side activities including badminton, squash, short tennis and table tennis, at a set cost of £5.20 for the morning (9am-12noon). And over 60s can swim at the discounted rate of £2.50 at certain times during the week (Monday-Friday) at all sites with pools. Councillor Jonathan Owen, chairman of the East Riding health and wellbeing board, said: “Mr Harrison’s story is just one of many that illustrate how the health and leisure services provided by the council are helping to not only improve the health and wellbeing of East Riding residents but to completely

12

transform lives for the better. “I would encourage anyone who has been inspired by Mr Harrison’s journey to find out more about how we as a local authority can help them start their journey.” Further details about any of the classes or facilities available through East Riding Leisure are available online at www.eastridingleisure.co.uk For further details about the exercise on referral scheme contact Jennifer Lonsdale, healthy lifestyles development officer, on (01482) 392527 or visit www.eastriding.gov.uk

Health Benefits Of Apples It is a well known fact that apples are very good for your health. However you may not be aware of just how good they actually are! Let us go through some of the main health benefits of apples. You are sure going to eat a lot of apples once you have read through them! Some great health benefits of apples: 1. You will have healthier and whiter teeth – if you make it a point to eat an apple a day, you will notice a substantial improvement in the color of your teeth. This is especially recommended if you have yellowish teeth. By biting an apple and chewing it, you will be producing more saliva. This helps to wash away germs and bacteria from your teeth, thus reducing tooth decay. 2. A great source of fibre – apples are a great source of fibre. Thus they are ideal for people who suffer from diarrhoea or constipation. This is because fibre can pull water out of your colon so as to help the food you eat move along in case you are constipated. Alternatively, in case of diarrhoea, fibre can absorb excess water from your stools so as to slow down your bowels. Thus apples are also great if you suffer from an irritable bowel syndrome.

They will give you a good intake of fibre, which is very helpful for your body. 3. Boosting your immune system – quercentin is an antioxidant that helps to boost your immune system. This antioxidant is found in apples, especially red apples. So if you want to fortify your immune system, make sure to eat plenty of red apples. 4. Control your weight – since apples are high in fibre they will fill you up and so you are less likely to eat anything for a while after munching an apple or two. By controlling your weight you will be less prone to problems such as high blood pressure or heart disease. 5. Liver detoxification – most fruits, including apples, are a great way to detoxify your liver.

Autumn pet advice

Autumn pet advice

We know that keeping your loved ones happy and healthy throughout the entire year is really important to you. Your pet’s health may be affected by changes in the weather and temperature along with seasonal events that could impact on their behaviours. Aside from caring for your pets, don’t forget about the other little creatures! Wildlife at this time of year tends to go into hibernation, so be sure to check under any garden rubbish before lighting any bonfires. And if you’re a bird lover, towards the end of the year food can become a bit more scarce so regular feeding (twice daily if you can) could give them a better chance of survival. See below for some top tips this autumn!

Firework danger!

Make sure this firework season doesn’t go off with a bang for your furry friends! We understand that some pets can react badly to loud bangs and strange flashes. Feel free to get in touch with our team of friendly vets and nurses who can advise on a variety of methods to desensitise your pet to the noise or reduce the signs of stress.

General wellbeing

Whether you have a cat, dog or any other small pet, the seasonal change in the weather may result in skin conditions, breathing problems, aching joints or allergies. It’s important to watch out for any changes in your pet’s health.

Call 01482 870 483

Dog walking advice

The right amount of exercise is essential to your dog’s bones, joints, lungs and heart. What’s more, getting out with your dog is great for both of you as it enables you to communicate better and create a stronger bond. But, don’t forget to take extra care in the dark, carry a torch, wrap up warm and remember your reflective clothing!

Dog blood donors

Could you pet be a doggie hero? Just like people, sick and injured animals frequently need blood transfusions. Healthy dogs are always needed for blood donations, a single donation could help save the life of up to four dogs. In many cases, a blood transfusion can save a pet’s life. To give blood dogs need to be up to date with their vaccinations, over 25kg in bodyweight, between one and eight years old, have a good temperament and never have travelled abroad. If you would like to see if your pet could be an eligible donor or to find out more information contact the practice on 01482 870 483.

Countdown to Christmas

Christmas is less than 100 days away - with some shoppers already finished with their present buying!! If you’re planning a big Christmas, it might be time to start the shopping countdown. But some sneaky Brits have already bought their presents Already done! Two in five Brits have ALREADY started Christmas shopping and more than a million have finished the whole lot. Most are motivated by a good deal, according to the survey from shopping channel QVC, but one in three also want to avoid the festive rush. We typically spend £290 on presents for loved ones, £123 on festive food and £74 on clothes, according to the research.

18

Whoops, we’re still paying back last year’s debt New findings from the Halifax show that the average person spent around £469 on Christmas 2014, including all spending on gifts, food, drink and socialising. Just under a third said they overspent last year. Separate new findings from cashback and rewards site, GetPaidTo, reveal that many people are still suffering the financial burden of Christmas 2014, with one in five still paying back last year’s holiday debt in August. Research also reveals that nearly one in five are spending on gifts they

can’t afford by paying via credit card, while almost one in10 are using overdraft facilities – a worrying sign of a nation that can’t afford Christmas. It’s never too early to think about Christmas While you might want to ignore the fact that Christmas is coming, it’s worth thinking about what a difference getting into the savings habit could make. Giles Martin from the Halifax, says: “While December 25 is unlikely to be at the top of people’s priorities as they return from their summer holidays, with the cost of the festive season nearing £500, and the hangover stretching well into the New Year, it’s never too early to think about how you will pay for it. Putting money aside each month can really help to spread the cost.” At the same time, by planning your festive shopping now, you could slash the amount you spend on presents – plus you could drastically reduce your stress levels by not leaving everything until the last minute.

EAST RIDING TOWN CRIER REGAINS BRITISH TITLE Michael Wood has got plenty to shout about after regaining the British Town Crier Championship title. The East Riding’s town crier beat 14 rivals from across the UK to claim the trophy at the 2015 championship at Middlewich, Cheshire, at the weekend. The contestants were judged on their clarity and volume, diction and inflection and ability to engage the audience, as well as needing immaculately presented liveries. In addition to being crowned 2015 British Town Crier Champion, Michael was particularly pleased to also pick up the prize for Best Content of Cry. This award is greatly valued by criers for it recognises the creative writing process behind words that are orated. Michael used the competition to promote the attractions of the East Riding. The first round was a “Home Cry” with town criers able to extol the virtues of the area they represent in no more than 125 words. Michael projected his voice over the hustle and bustle of

a busy Saturday market day to declare: “Visit Beautiful Beverley to see its magnificent medieval gothic Minster nestled alongside trendy boutiques on cobbled streets.” He also suggests holidaymakers may like to “enjoy a daytime donkey ride or perhaps a midnight skinny dip in Bridlington Bay”. Typifying Yorkshire humour, Michael’s closing line was: “Ultimately, enjoy glorious Yorkshire weather. Indeed, last year it only rained twice – once for three months and once for five months!” Michael can be seen and heard around the county at civic and corporate events and in 2017 he is looking forward to completing 20 years in his role.

Travel news….

Often there are new ideas that don’t reach the market place, here is a selection.. India: If you have been watching the recent documentaries then perhaps you are now intrigued? I love this country and have visited many times. Why not take a city break here? A 4 night break in Mumbai based on twin or double room, with flights, accommodation & a chauffer driven private car starts at £749 per person. Alternatively the city of Delhi from £849 per person. Seaside holidays: fantastic brand new departures from our area travelling by coach up until Christmas 2016! E.g. Cromer the 3 star Hotel De Paris 7 days, departing 31st July £369. Weymouth 5 days departing 6th July £239. I have stayed in a number of the hotels in this brochure and have my favourites. Vietnam & Cambodia: Vietnam is visa free until mid 2016. Visa’s usually cost around £100 so this is a great saving. These are two fabulous countries and to make the most of your time an escorted tour is my recommendation to include a cruise in Halong Bay and on the River Mekong. Edvard Munch : Van Gogh In Amsterdam there is an exhibition with 100+ pieces of work on display until mid January. You can travel by Air or Ferry for a reasonable short break to Amsterdam. Iceland & New York : these two destinations make a great break, available at an amazingly low price. Iceland offers unique scenery & geysers in stunning countryside, mixed with the bright lights, sights & fabulous shopping in New York. “The Girls” is Gary Barlow & Tim Firths new musical based on the film & stage play “the Calendar Girls”. Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research will receive monies from this production which is very apt to the original WI Calendar produced many years ago. This runs from November through to January. Call for details. Just You 2016 : there are a number of new destinations on sale from this tour operator that offers all single rooms. E.g. Borneo, Canada, Barbados, Spain, Italy & more… We have brochures in stock if you would like a closer look. Often ad hoc single offers are available with many other operators too, for instance Riviera offer a number of cabins on river cruises without supplement. Dumfries House: many have visited Highgrove and enjoyed the wonderful gardens then the next step I would recommend is a visit north to this wonderful house that HRH Prince Charles has given a helping hand in the restoration of the House & Gardens. This includes the Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden. Ask for more details. Wherever in the world you are looking to experience do remember Marion Owen Travel. You can book all of your arrangements with us, do give my team a call. We are experienced in all corners of the world, we book all tour operators and our enjoyment is to fulfil your travelling desires & aspirations. We look forward to hearing from you. Marion

Interesting Yorkshire Facts Yorkshire is the biggest county in Britain, with more acres than there are letters in the bible.

The white rabbit in Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland is said to be inspired by a stone rabbit carved above the door to the sacristy in St Mary’s Church, Beverley, by an unknown medieval craftsman.

Yorkshire has England’s biggest vale, biggest medieval cathedral, biggest abbey ruins, biggest parish church, the world’s biggest fish and chip shop and Britain’s tallest man.

The emperor Septimus Severus ruled the entire Roman Empire from York for two years. He died in 211 AD, and is buried somewhere beneath the old city.

Beverley is named after Beavers (the name means Beaver Clearing), once common in the area? The town crest still has a beaver on it. The animals were sadly hunted to extinction in Britain many centuries ago: partly for their fur; but more strangely because the church regarded the water-dwelling animals as fish not meat for fasting purposes, so eating beaver was allowed on holy days with the Pope’s blessing.

When it opened in 1867, Scarborough’s Grand Hotel was the largest purpose-built hotel in Europe, and one of the largest brick buildings in the world.

On a visit in 1665 King James II, then Duke of York, is said to have described the East Yorkshire village of Londesborough as a ‘paradise on earth’. Some would argue it still is.

22

The tallest-ever Englishman is, naturally, a Yorkshireman. William Bradley (1787-1820) was born in Market Weighton, one of 13 children. By the age of 20, he was seven feet nine inches tall. He made appearances at fairs all over England, calling himself the Yorkshire Giant and charging people a shilling a time to shake his hand.

Why Water Works

Experts tell us that we need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? The human body is made up primarily of water. Around 85% of the brain, 80% of blood and 70% of muscle is water. Given these facts, it is easy to understand why maintaining our body’s water levels is so important. During a single day an average person loses around 2 - 4 litres of water in the following ways: urine 50%; sweating 34%; breathing 14%; and faeces 2%. In order to keep our body working at its optimum levels, this lost water needs replacing. Most of the lost water (47%) is replaced through drinks, a further 39% through food and the remaining 14% comes as a by product of metabolic activity. Water helps remove the dangerous toxins that our body takes in from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the chemicals used in the various products we use on our skin and hair. It cushions and lubricates our joints and carries oxygen and nutrients into our cells. Water also helps regulate our body temperature and assists in digestion.

What Happens If We Don’t Drink Enough Water? If we don’t maintain the correct water levels, our bodies will start to dehydrate. Like a car’s need for oil, if the oil level gets too low, the engine will start to run rough. If the oil runs out all together, the engine will stop running. It is the same with our body. Therefore it is easy to see why it is very important to drink eight glasses of water a day. Symptoms of mild dehydration include the following: • Reduced alertness • Reduced concentration • Slower reaction times • Tiredness• Headaches • Feelings of nausea • Low blood pressure • Constipation • Dry skin Drinking water can help us lose weight Believe it or not, it’s true! If we are dehydrated the performance of the blood, liver and kidneys is affected, with the end result that the body can’t metabolise the fat stored in cells as effectively, so the fat remains in the body. In addition, water is a natural appetite suppressant so drinking plenty of natural water (not in tea, coffee or fizzy drinks!) will help us to feel full and not so likely to eat. So, let’s do what the experts tell us and look after our wonderful bodies by drinking plenty of water!

English public backs 5p plastic bag charge

comprehensive scheme, and tackle more of the bag litter that blights our countryside, rivers, towns and seas.”

Nearly two-thirds of people support the 5p charge for plastic bags that started on Monday5th October in England, according to a poll. The charge for single-use bags sees England catching up with the rest of the UK, with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all having reported dramatic falls in consumption after similar schemes were introduced. Despite the government deciding to exempt shops with fewer than 250 employees from having to charge shoppers 5p per bag, the Association of Convenience Stores has said 16% of corner shops, newsagents and village stores will implement it regardless. Half of English respondents support smaller shops enacting the charge with 30% against it, the ICM polling for the Break the Bag Habit coalition found. Support for the general principle of the 5p charge to tackle waste was higher, at 62% in favour versus 25% against.

30

Samantha Harding, the spokeswoman for the coalition, which includes Keep Britain Tidy, the Campaign to Protect Rural England and other charities, said: “This poll shows that the appetite is there to support a more

About 7.6bn plastic bags were given out in the UK last year, or 140 bags per person, and the number has risen for five years running. The charge is expected to raise around £73m a year for good causes, with retailers choosing where the money goes. Parks and woodland walks are among the schemes that Tesco has said it will fund with the proceeds. Online grocery delivery companies will also be required to take part in the scheme, with companies charging 5p per bag delivered. Ocado said it would pay customers 5p back per bag they returned to its delivery drivers for recycling.

PUBLIC TO HAVE SAY ON TAXI LICENSING POLICY Taxi drivers, operators and members of the public are being given the chance to have their say on how taxi and private hire services are run within the East Riding. East Riding of Yorkshire Council is amending their taxi licensing policy and is asking for views and comments. Some of the proposed changes include: l a review of vehicle specification and a livery for taxis l strengthening the convictions policy l mandatory training for applicants and drivers on safeguarding l review of taxi fares for bank holidays, seasonal periods and waiting time l mandatory training for private hire operators on private hire law, their role and responsibilities l publication of the names of drivers where licenses have been suspended or revoked. Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for

community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Taxi licensing has had a high national profile over recent years and the policy review is a good opportunity to look at how we promote safeguarding and the protection of the public as well as support local business. “We want to hear from drivers and members of the public about what is important to them so we can produce a policy that considers their views and needs. “We work closely with the taxi trade, who we know are equally committed to ensuring that any changes made are in the interests of the customers using their services.” The consultation document can be found on the council’s website http://www2.eastriding.gov.uk/ business/licences-and-registrations/available-licences/ cars-and-taxis/taxi-private-hire-news-flashes/

UK women’s life expectancy ‘second worst’ in Western Europe ”British women have second worst life expectancy in Europe,” This is one of the findings of a Europe-wide health report carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO). The report also warned that European levels of alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity are alarmingly high, which could result in the following possibility: “Young Europeans may die at an earlier age than their grandparents”. In the interests of accuracy, we should point out that the claim British women have the second worst life expectancy in Europe is incorrect. This figure is based on an analysis of countries traditionally regarded as being part of Western Europe. Life expectancy figures in other parts of Europe, such as Russia and the Balkan states, are significantly lower than in the UK.

36

What is the basis of these reports? The WHO has published its European Health Report, which measures progress against health targets for Europe, looking at how individual countries compare, and commenting on possible future threats to the health of the region. It publishes this regional report every three years.

What data did they look at? The WHO looked at progress towards six targets for Europe. These were: • to reduce premature mortality • to increase life expectancy • to reduce health inequalities across the European region • to enhance wellbeing • to move towards everyone in Europe having access to healthcare • to establish individual targets for European countries They reviewed statistics on death from: • heart disease, stroke, cancers and respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) • life expectancy of male and female children today • comparisons between different states of health outcomes • measures of wellbeing • lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol use and obesity • health policies in different countries Many figures were based on estimates. For example, figures on tobacco and alcohol use are estimates by the WHO researchers, who applied trends in tobacco reduction from the period 2000-08 to national figures collected in 2010. The report authors say more up-to-date information had not been submitted by individual countries.

Supporting The Local Economy What are the main findings? Despite the tone of the news coverage, the report is generally positive, showing that Europe is on track to achieving targets to reduce premature death from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and lung diseases. However, it says that most of the recent progress has been seen in the countries that had the worst health records, rather than countries like the UK, which were already doing relatively well. The report says that people in the UK are much less likely to smoke (estimates are around 20%, compared to a European average of 30%). People in the UK drink, on average, 9-12 litres of pure alcohol a year (equivalent to around 100-130 bottles of wine). Rates of obesity and overweight are among the highest in Europe. The report showed life expectancy at birth has been rising in Europe since the 1990s and stood at 76.8 years in 2011 (the most recent date for which figures were available). Women live longer than men, with an average life expectancy of 73 for men and 80 for women. In the UK, the figures are 78.8 for men and 82.7 for women. The media reports of British women’s life expectancy being the “second lowest in Europe” does not reflect that this is based on a list of just 15 countries – not the whole of Europe. By contrast, life expectancy for women in Russia (which is not on the list) is just 75.

What does this mean for me? If you compared this data to data from 100 years ago, a trend would become immediately obvious. In 1915, many Europeans would die of infection. Today, the biggest killers are what are known as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). These are non-infectious diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease and stroke, which are usually associated with lifestyle factors including obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption. The report warns that NCDs are now the biggest threats to future health in Europe. The good news is, while there is no room for complacency, UK rates of tobacco smoking are below the European average and continue to fall. Alcohol consumption in the UK is in line with the rest of Europe. However, perhaps what is most worrying are the statistics on obesity and overweight, where the UK is among the worst in Europe. Ways you can reduce your risk of developing one or more NCDs include stopping smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation and maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise. These steps should also help keep your cholesterol and blood pressure at a healthy rate.

What’s On Trend

Why Buy Vintage? The interest in vintage clothing and homeware has soared in recent years. With more and more people wearing vintage and working it into their everyday wardrobes. It has also had a big comeback on the catwalk with many fashion labels on and off the high street adopting vintage garments or a ‘vintage look’ for their designs. But there are still those who are unsure of why they should buy vintage. So here are just a few reasons why you should be buying vintage and what makes vintage clothing so sought after. To be Individual Most items are one offs and it is rare to ever see anyone wearing a similiar garment. Not only that but vintage clothing is very different to the modern clothing we wear today, there are so many different styles and beautiful flourishes to vintage clothing that our modern clothes just cannot come close. For the Quality Vintage clothing tends to be of a much higher quality than what you see today. Quality fabrics and hand stitching mean that every garment has been made with a care and attention that mass

produced modern clothing cannot match. For the History For a lot of people, vintage clothing is something to love and to cherish. They are a key to past times with every garment having it’s own history and every vintage garment particular the older pieces have a beautiful romanticism about them, quite often we won’t know the history of each garment, but it is easy to be swept away to past times when imagining swirling around the ballroom in a vintage gown. Also due to many garments traditionally being hand made and individually manufactured, vintage clothing is often seen as being much better and purer than modern clothing. They often were embellished or were made in such a way that simply does not exist in the modern world now that most clothing is machine manufactured. For the Environment Constantly producing modern clothing at the pace that it is worn (and worn out!) takes a considerable amount of energy with

Supporting The Local Economy a real negative impact on our enivronment. In buying vintage clothing you are helping to recycle these previously loved items and giving them new life in our modern times. To Make Money Who would have thought clothing could be an investment? The truth is, vintage clothing can be worth a lot of money. Generally the rule is the older the better, but there is nothing wrong with buying later period garments and keeping them in good condition for later resale – that is, if you can resist the urge to wear them! If these reasons alone cannot convince you then pop along to a vintage fair, when you have drunk the tea, listened to the music, tried on the clothes and soaked in the atmosphere, you will soon be wishing it was 1960 and you could do it everyday!

Leaf Mould Darwin may have been fascinated by the way that earthworms manage to pull leaves down into the soil, but sadly they don’t manage to work on a fast enough timescale to prevent falling leaves from causing problems in autumn. Not only will a carpet of leaves bleach patches of the lawn and clog up the pond, but once leaves start to disintegrate on the hard landscaping we have to worry about Aunty Mabel slipping over when she pops out to refill the bird feeder. Fallen leaves aren’t all bad, though - with the help of those earthworms and other soil organisms they break down and feed the soil, and while they’re doing so they form a protective layer that prevents winter weather from ruining the soil structure and leaching away all the nutrients. They also provide a top-notch wildlife habitat when they pile up in drifts and under hedges. Where they won’t cause any problems we can safely leave fallen leaves where they are, but while you’re raking up the ones that have to go you can do your garden a big favour and turn them into leaf mould rather than throwing them away.

40

Leaf mould is just compost made entirely from fallen leaves, and making it is a very easy process. Simply pile up leaves in a heap, or create an open-sided cage of chicken wire if you’d like to keep them slightly neater. In an urban garden it pays to rake them into plastic sacks, tie the tops, poke a few holes in the side and then leave them behind Continued on Page 42

Gardening the shed. After a year you’ll have something that looks like slightly older leaves. A year later you’ll have something approaching chunky compost that makes a lovely soil improver. Use it to mulch around shrubs and trees or to cover bare soil in the winter. If you have the patience to wait another year, you’ll have lovely soft compost that’s ideal for sowing seeds and can be used as the base for your own free and peat-free potting mixes. That’s the Slow Composting version. Raking leaves by hand on a beautiful autumn day sounds like

Designing a Berry Patch Most gardens have a veg patch tucked away somewhere, a strip of land set aside for spuds and beans and cabbages. It’s all rather homely-sounding, with echoes of Beatrix Potter and flat caps and hoeing. But I’ve had it with homely. I want a berry patch! Berry patches are altogether more luscious and indulgent. They’re places of pleasure, sweetness, seduction: where every branch drips translucent red and purple jewels swollen with sugar. They’re American inventions: the equivalent of our prosaic and functional fruit cage, though that doesn’t come close to capturing the spirit of Huckleberry Finn adventure, of childhoods spent getting lost among the blueberry bushes with faces smeared in purple and stomachs aching with strawberries. compost in a year or two. But if you’re short on time and want to turbo-charge the process a little bit then spread your collected leaves on the lawn, raise the mower blades and use it to chop them up (leave the collection box on and you won’t have to rake them up twice). Chopped leaves rot down a bit more quickly, but the end product is just as virtuous. So this autumn don’t see collecting fallen leaves as a chore, see it as community service - you’ll be basking in the silent thanks of your plants, your soil, those earthworms and (of course) Aunty Mabel. Gardening For all their beauty and their sensual pleasures, berry patches are very easy-going. You can place them more or less anywhere in the garden, even if there’s relatively little sun – most fruit bushes don’t mind shade, though if you’re growing strawberries or cherries you’ll need some sunny patches. And they’re so practical: you can protect all your fruit at the same time with a netting cage to keep out marauding birds. It doesn’t have to be too industrial-looking: I’m thinking tall, slender wooden posts, with copper piping between them and central, higher posts from which I’ll hang my netting on rope swags.

44

Designing a berry patch can be as simple or as complicated as you want. Regimented rows are easy and traditional, but uninspiring: I’m planning something altogether more elaborate, a fruitier version of a potager. In the berry patch in my head, there are blackcurrants underplanted with strawberries; gooseberries cordon-trained up one wall and a fan-trained cherry spreading its arms luxuriously across another. You see, berry patches can be wonderfully decorative. You can make the most of training fruit into fans, espaliers and cordons, adding step-over apples to edge beds and tall, thin ‘Ballerina’ pears as vertical accents to cram as much fruit as possible into a small space while creating beautiful, architectural shapes to admire in winter. Symmetrical designs for the layout, just as you’d use in a potager, are immensely pleasing: lay out beds in geometric patterns, perhaps L-shaped around a central square, or paths heading out from a circle like spokes in a wheel. I’m planning to put a huge container in the centre of my berry patch, filled with ericaceous compost so I can grow my beloved acid-loving blueberries even though I’ve got alkaline soil. They make beautiful, ornamental shrubs with superb autumn colour and, of course, those smokey blue-black berries.

With careful planning, you can have fresh fruit to pick from May to November, starting with the earliest of gooseberries: trained into cordons, you can plant four different varieties even if all you have is an eight-foot stretch of wall (and still have space for lingonberries at their feet). ‘Invicta’ is standard-issue and super reliable, but for the best flavour try red ‘Whinham’s Industry’, ‘Careless’ or vibrant purple ‘Lancashire Lad’. Strawberries start around June – plant early, mid-season and late varieties to keep them coming – and can be tucked into more or less any sunny corner. They make wonderful ground cover. Then it’s berries all the way: blueberries, whitecurrants, redcurrants, blackcurrants... Raspberries can be lined up along the back, and blackberries, tayberries or loganberries trained to romp over a wall or fence. It’s amazing how much fruit you can squeeze into even quite small patches, and best of all, they’re all permanent crops, needing little more than an annual prune and a good generous mulch to produce all the fruit you can eat for years to come. FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

IT’S THE SIMPLE THINGS! I’ve been having a great time recently trying out new recipes with my daughter on Sunday afternoons. I must admit it’s mainly baking (!) but we’ve had a go at a few other things too. It’s been lots of fun and we get to spend quality time together just chatting about everything and anything. She measures everything out and loves watching it come together as she mixes it all, commenting on the texture and smells. This week we tried some new sauces to go with a variety of different types of pasta. Our dinner plate looked very interesting I can tell you! Then we were wondering what to have for dessert and we saw that Wellington Fudge was on her school dinner menu this week. I’m afraid I didn’t know what it was (apparently everyone had it at their school except me!) so we googled it and we made it. Try it – it is a fantastic gooey chocolate sponge. Yum! CHRISTMAS IS COMING! 46 I know, I know. We’ve only just finished summer and I guess the next think on the agenda is Halloween, but the way the year’s going, Christmas will be here before you know it, so it’s time to get your plans into action. I am absolutely not the best person to say this, and I usually have great intentions of being super prepared by the end of November, but in reality that never happens. Wouldn’t it be great if it did though?!! Maybe I’ll surprise myself this year! GAMING COMPANIES ANNOY ME! Can anyone explain to me why gaming companies insist on making everything difficult for parents? Well really that’s a rhetorical question because it’s all about making money! For instance, we have a Minecraft app on the iPad, we also have Minecraft on Xbox 360 and we have it on the PC. Why I ask myself? Apparently it’s because they all have different “mods” and “skins” depending on which platform you’re playing on and I think some worlds are different too? If they weren’t so mad on Minecraft I would just say “No”, but for some reason I’ve given in and bought the PC game too (after months of pressure/pleading I might add!) and also it was a reward for being good! But why can’t gaming companies just make a game that works the same no matter what device you plan to play with it? We can’t all have a Playstation, Xbox and Wii U and they shouldn’t expect people to buy the same game several times. It’s robbery!
