Better Broadband Decent broadband access is a key utility for modern homes and businesses. Yet for too many people in Beverley and Holderness, this is a problem that blights their lives – particularly in the more rural parts of the constituency. Earlier this year I joined over one hundred fellow MPs in calling for Openreach, the company which operates the under-performing national broadband network, to Pictured: Graham with fellow East Riding MPs Sir Greg Knight and Andrew Percy meeting with Councillors become an independent concern rather than an arm and BT managers in North Newbald of BT, with a view to opening up the fusty broadband market to the fresh air of proper competition. I believe options on the table include separating Openreach from BT. this would be in both the national and the consumer interest. Taking part in this consultation may not be the most attractive Despite Openreach receiving billions from other broadband thing to do on sunny late summer days – but something needs providers and taxpayer subsidy, around 5.7 million people in the UK to change if people in the East Riding are to receive the quality of have internet connections that still do not reach Ofcom’s minimum service they expect. Readers can tell Ofcom what they think by speed of 10Mbps, of whom 3.5 million live in rural areas like going to http://www.fixbritainsinternet.co.uk/page/speakout/ Beverley and Holderness. fix-britains-internet and I hope people will take five minutes to do so – it could save them a lot of time in the future. The Property Column
Chestnuts Roasting...
I recently was asked ‘what should I be doing to be in my Dream Home for Christmas?’ This involves not only selling your property but also buying your Dream Home and there are so many points which need to be considered. Firstly, what are your dream requirements? These typically includes location, size, transport links, schools or garden size and price, but yours might be more unique. Secondly which agent should you use? You should research and meet agents to talk about your specific requirements. There is a wide variety in levels of service, but remember this is probably the expensive possession you will buy and sell. An agent which may save a few hundred pounds on fees might not be right for your needs. Is the agent someone who you will make your dream a reality? Thirdly how are you going to be able to purchase your dream home? Most agents for a fee, will provide advice on mortgages and conveyancing, whilst some agents will supply these services for free.
Fourthly for the market appraisal what should I do? Well hopefully you have completed all those ‘little jobs’ discussed in a previous article. But the actual market appraisal is an opportunity for you to further discuss your requirements and to determine the best strategy to meet your goal. An agent who suggests a high price might not necessarily be the best agent for you to meet your goal. A high price will probably delay the whole process meaning you miss your Christmas target. Finally, what can I do to ensure the target is met? An excellent agent will provide not only excellent marketing materials and arrange viewings, but also remain focussed on getting your dream home. This will include arranging viewings and using the feedback to proactively adjust the marketing to achieve the goal. Importantly keep you informed and ‘in the loop’ throughout the process. By choosing an agent with local knowledge, with local expertise and focuses on you, hopefully you will be able to achieve your Dream Home for Christmas. Until next month take care.

Local News
Hull & East Riding Mumbler News
There are some good family events coming up. 8th-11th September is Heritage Open Day, a national event to celebrate our history, architecture and culture and some of our local country houses and museums taking part and running activities. Treasure House in Beverley have free children’s activities and behind the scenes tours on the 10th. Streetlife Museum in Hull has its Big Bus Day on the 10th where you can go on board lots of different buses, open top bus tours and various free children’s activities.
I hope everyone survived the school holidays?! With my eldest off school and the classes and playgroups my toddler goes to closed for the summer holidays, August felt like a bit of a whirlwind of day trips, playdates and tantrums! I’m looking forward to getting back to some normality in September. Although the schools are back, there’s still plenty of summer left and lots of outdoor places to make the most of. I’m hoping the weather is good enough for a few more beach trips, we like Fraisethorpe for sunny days and Bridlington for mixed weather days to combine a beach walk with indoor arcades and fish and chips. We’re also lucky to have lots of nature reserves in the area. We love a trip across the bridge to Waters Edge in Barton and Far Ings. Noddle Hill in Bransholme is a hidden gem to explore, as are the wetlands at North Cave.
On the 11th September it’s my Big Mumbler Sunday! A family fun day which includes a program of taster classes across the afternoon for you to bring your children to try out some of the local baby, toddler and children’s classes. These include Music with Mummy, My Baby Can Dance, Rhythm Time, LBDA Dance, Footy Tots, Rugby Tots and more. There are also crafts and activities, bouncy castles, sandpit, BBQ and refreshments so pop along and have some fun! It’s 1.30-4pm at Blackburn Leisure Club, Prescott Road, Brough HU15 1BB. Entry is just £1 per adult (children free) for all the classes and crafts inside, outside is all free.
As the seasons start to change it’s a great time to walk in the woods. Nutwood in Raywell makes a good short circuit walk with lots to see, as do the woods on Beverley Westwood. Little Switzerland at the Humber Bridge Country Park is also great at this time of the year and it makes a good day out to combine this with a walk or cycle on the Humber Bridge.
In spite of all these factors it ultimately comes down to you when selling your home. If you are motivated and prepared to market your house correctly then selling your property becomes a much easier task. In the end, you are the determining factor. For more ideas for things to do in September have a look on the Hull & East Riding Mumbler website at www.hullandeastridingmumbler.com.

Minding The Minster
Heavenly Sounds The crowning glory of Beverley Minster is its music. There is a strong tradition of music in this building that dates back to its origins and continues to this day with a dedication and standard worthy of the stunning surroundings. The three Beverley Minster choirs (the boys’ choir, the girls’ choir, and the full choir with adult singers) are led by the Director of Music Robert Poyser. His experience as organist of the historic Minster organ, conductor, and teacher of choral singers has helped to shape the choral ministry here to the high standard it continues to display. As the choir returns from its summer break to begin a new term of music, they are looking forward to their first foreign tour--to Beverley’s twin town--Lemgo, in Germany. “The whole choir,
numbering about 50, will be singing concerts and services, touring the sights of Germany, and attending civic functions representing Beverley, East Yorkshire to the people of Lemgo”, explained Poyser. The tour, which takes place at the end of October, will be a highlight of the choir calendar, and will help prepare them for the upcoming busy seasons of Advent and Christmas. Hannah Moore, 16, Head Chorister of the Girls’ Choir at Beverley Minster, describes her experience singing with the choir as “really good fun.” A founder member of the Girls’ Choir, which began in 2009, Hannah has been singing here since she was 9. “There can be friendships right across the age-range,” she said of the choir which attracts boys and girs from as young as 7 or 8, and sing through adulthood. Her leadership role within the choir is one that she describes as “helping the choir work together,” and she is planning to continue her experience by singing at University, possibly with a choral scholarship. “I will definately keep singing!” she said. To learn more about the choir, the services at which they sing, and details about upcoming recruitment, please check the Music section of the MInster’s website beverleyminster.org.uk Robyn Cleveland - Head Virger

Check out Hull Pirates! Hull Pirates are Hull & East Yorkshire’s number one ice hockey team! We play in the English Premier League after forming in the summer of 2015. Here, we provide you with the latest news about our club.

The bulk of the signings were completed for Hull before August, but the Pirates were able to bring in forward Jason Hewitt for the season. Hewitt has a wealth of experience, playing for the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite League for ten years. The 33-year-old has won numerous Elite League titles, as well as playing in the Champions Hockey League and for the Great Britain national side. The Pirates enjoyed a great start to their pre-season schedule over the bank holiday weekend in August. Hull faced Billingham Stars over two games, one home and one away, and emerged as winners in both. Saturday’s fixture saw the new-look Pirates travel to the north-east to face Billingham at the Billingham Forum. A hat-trick from new signing Jason Hewitt, combined with efforts from Ugnius Cizas, Andrej
Themar, Lee Haywood, Stanislav Lascek and Nathan Salem gave the Pirates a 12-2 victory. The next day, the two sides met again with Hull running out 16-2 winners. A hat-trick from local youngster Cain Taylor being the highlight of the evening. More info at: www.hullpirates.co.uk

Beverley now has the X Factor after a celebrity launch of new gastro pub The Potting Shed. Guests at a VIP night were treated to performances by finalists from the ITV reality show, Anton Stephans and Kiera Weathers. The two singers (pictured right), who won millions of fans on last year’s show, wowed guests with live vocal sets to celebrate the opening. The Potting Shed, a multi-million pound transformation of the former landmark pub Hodgsons in Flemingate, attracted a glamorous crowd of famous faces for its first night.
14
Big Brother favourite, model and stylist Sam Giffen, who cheekily claimed to be the best looking in the BB house this summer, joined pals and models Charlotte Dawson and Amanda Harrington and fellow exBig Brother contestant Mark Byron in a stunning quartet of guests. Rachel Rhodes from ITV2’s Ibiza Weekender also attracted plenty of paparazzi attention as she arrived for the launch, along with cast members from Emmerdale, former soap star Kurtis Stacey and a crowd of rugby players enjoying a well-earned night off training.
More than 600 guests packed out the pub, which has a quirky garden theme, enjoying freeflowing Perrier Jouet champagne, Hendricks gin and fabulous cocktails. The night was a sneak preview of what regulars can expect from The Potting Shed when it officially opens its doors tonight. New owners, Leeds-based Burning Night Group, have lavished more than £1.5million on the venue, creating a modern bar and restaurant which is full of fun touches including brightly-coloured wooden garden sheds in the gardens and an indoor upstairs patio area complete with boxed hedges. The pub promises to be family and dog-friendly, with menus focused on ‘feeding, watering, sharing’, although with leading drinks brands such as Hendricks and Perrier Jouet at the forefront of a drinks menu which also features craft ales, world lagers and fine wines, it intends to become a place to see and be seen too. The Beverley Potting Shed, which offers striking views of the Minster, is the second to be opened by Potting Shed Trading Limited, which made its debut 16 months ago in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Already a huge success, the company has plans for further sites in the near future.

Over 50’s ...
16
I have to admit that I have never thought of myself as a Saga Holiday Traveller but I am well into this age bracket now so why? I suppose the thought is these holidays are for old folk and now mid 50’s I do not class myself as old! I do remember 4 decades ago when I started working in the travel industry we booked Saga holidays mainly in the UK staying in UNI accommodation, often with shared facilities. There admin was appalling and they went direct sell. Of course over the years the service and quality has changed for the better. Travel agents have been booking their holidays for the last couple of years and Titan is a sister company we have booked for many years. I am now re thinking, for example…. Just look at the advantages for the over 50’s taking a Saga Cruise. Inclusions are: Spacious small ship cruising. Adults only over the age of 50 with the exception of companions 40+. Travel from your door (max 6 per car). Gratuities (tips are included). Free Wi-Fi & loan of iPads. Holiday insurance is included to, pre existing medical conditions are covered but not terminal illness. Full board inc 7 choices of wine & other beverages with meals. Speciality Restaurants, amazing Afternoon Tea & in cabin dining. Price promise, if fares are reduced you will receive a refund. I enjoyed my experience aboard Saga Sapphire. The food quality and choice along with service was exceptional. The ship was spacious with a mix of modern and traditional public spaces. Carrying just 720 guests she is a nice size. Offering cabins and suites to suit all
guests. Solo travellers are welcome too with 44 cabins dedicated for single use, which is more than usual.

New orders to combat anti-social to come into force A new order for each individual parish council will come into force later this week in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour. From Thursday, 1 September, East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be introducing new public space protection orders for all town and parish council areas. These orders will include controls over the presence and behaviour of dogs as well as including restrictions on the consumption of alcohol and/or access to parts of the public highway in certain areas. If anyone is found to be in breach of the conditions of the order, such as allowing a dog to foul and not

cleaning up, the council will take the appropriate action such as issuing a fine. The orders also give officers from Humberside Police powers to seize alcohol from anyone drinking in an area covered by an alcohol restriction. Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Public and open spaces play a vital role in communities. “But sometimes, actions of a selfish few can ruin these spaces, through public drunkenness, irresponsible dog ownership or general anti-social behaviour can mean these spaces are lost to the communities who use them. “Putting these issues under the umbrella of public space protection orders will give council officers, and the police, a more effective way of dealing with the problems.” For more information on the public space protection orders, or to view the orders for specific parish councils, go to http://www2.eastriding.gov.uk/living/crime-andcommunity-safety/anti-social-behaviour/

Autumn Weddings
Ten top tips for your Autumn Wedding BeverleyMag Style Editor Laura shares her top tips for planning an Autumnal Wedding 1. Embrace the natural colour palette that accompanies the season; rusty oranges, leafy greens and aubergine purples will set the scene for an autumnal celebration.
3. With the daylight starting to fade earlier in the day, think about warm, romantic lighting for the evening part of your celebration. Tea lights and lanterns will create a lovely rustic glow.
9. Finishing touches like hessian are perfect for creating an autumnal feel and can be worked into so many aspects of your wedding. A simple DIY table runner will transform your tabletop, or a cute hessian bow on your bouquet will help tie in the look.
4. Make the most of seasonal fruit in your choice of menu and sweet treats. Fruit pies of apples or blackberries work perfectly on a themed dessert table and veg such as pumpkin and parsnip will make a hearty soup for a starter.
10. As the autumn evening starts to draw in, make sure you keep your guests nice and toasty. A chill-out area with warm blankets is a great way to let your friends and family relax and warm up before hitting the dance floor...
2. Make sure you plan your photography to get some outdoor snaps and capture the autumn scenery and colours around your venue.
26
8. Autumn is a great time of year to make cute DIY details and help stretch the budget that little bit further. Take a trip to your local park and collect twigs to make decorative wreaths, or conkers to use as place settings.
5. Hints of gold and bronze are perfect for this time of year and will add a touch of luxury to your look. Metallics are still a hot trend for 2016/17 so opt for some opulent finishing touches to work with your colour palette. 6. Style up your reception with rustic accessories such as a wooden table centre display or a hand-carved cake stand – perfect for a woodland wedding! 7. When it comes to your wedding flowers, autumn is the perfect time to mix in berries and opt for a luxurious colour palette to highlight the change in season. Foliage such as astilbe and seeds such as scabiosa stellata will create a rustic looking arrangement and bring in lots of exciting textures.
CHILDREN AT WEDDINGS It’s a controversial topic – whether to have children at your wedding or not. As the magazine’s wedding expert I have answered many of your letters over the years, and now I’m sharing my advice to help others with the same dilemmas. Q. Is it okay to have a ‘no children’ rule at our wedding? A close friend, who I dearly want at my wedding, has a baby who will be 18 months when we get married. It’s only a small wedding and I don’t really want to have any children there. Is it okay to have a ‘no children’ rule and if so, how do I tell my friend to leave her child at home without offending her?

Autumn Weddings A: It can help to keep an open mind before saying no to all children at weddings. While most people won’t be offended if you don’t invite their children, it is worth bearing in mind that friends or family with babies may not be able to come unless they bring their baby, particularly if they are still breastfeeding or don’t have trusted family close enough by to babysit. It could be prudent therefore to discuss your feelings with your friend before sending out your invitations. Explain to her that after a lot of agonising you have decided to have no children at your wedding. It was a hard decision to make and you hope she understands. You really feel that your wedding is an ‘adult only’ occasion. If she then suggests that she will not be able to come to your wedding without her baby, you might want to consider allowing babies but not older children.

Another way to keep the little darlings quiet is to keep them entertained with silent toys at the ceremony and activity packs at the reception.

WILKO JOHNSON with special guest Aaron Keylock Friday 7th October - Doors: 7.00pm SHEFFIELD – City Hall (Ballroom) Box Office No – 0114 278 9789
Website - http://www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/Wilko-Johnson Feel good? Audiences certainly did in the mid ’70s as Wilko duck-walked his way across countless stages and venues in the UK, with Dr Feelgood in the vanguard of the pub rock movement, performing the gutsy down-to-earth rock and roll that was a welcome antidote to the faltering prog-rock era. Heavily influenced by legendary guitarist Mick Green from ’60s rockers Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Wilko employs a finger-style, chop-chord strumming action (the ‘stab’, as he describes it). This allows for chords and lead to be played at the same time, giving a fluency and a distinctive sound very unlike the cleaner swat of a pick. With this economic sound, coupled with that black-suited, scowling look, and the yards he covered across the stage pausing only to twist the guitar lead out from under his feet, Wilko became one of the guitar heroes of the era. His influence was felt in bands up and down the country, and later in the emergent punk revolution (Joe Strummer of the Clash bought a Tele after seeing Wilko play). Feelgood had four successful albums in Wilko’s time, then followed a busy creative period playing in an early incarnation of the Wilko Johnson Band, the Solid Senders, before he joined Ian Dury’s band The Blockheads, in 1980. All through the ’80s, ’90s and into the new millennium he continued to gig in the UK, Europe and Japan. September Gardener Start your compost Get your compost going by buying a compost bin or building a partially enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It is essential to replace the goodness in soil and autumn produces quantities of garden waste that will add invaluable organic richness back into your soil next spring. Remember to add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable plants are ideal, but NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material to your compost heap - it will nurture whatever villain you are trying to eliminate with loving care! Clear garden debris Keep weeding; most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and systemic weedkillers will carry on working throughout the winter. Also clear any debris and diseased material from your garden. Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden will reappear next spring with a vengeance so get rid of them
now. Burn diseased material and put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost. Clean out the greenhouse Once tomatoes and other greenhouse crops are over, give the greenhouse a thorough clean to prevent pests from making a home in that lovely warm environment, ready to leap into action next spring. Gardening Dig clay soil If your soil is heavy clay, start digging it over now - add plenty of organic matter to improve the quality and pea shingle to improve the drainage. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the cold will break the lumps down, making spring planting infinitely easier! Watering Should September turn into an Indian summer, remember to keep watering thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often. Containers and hanging baskets need watering every day.

For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in dry periods - camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Planting With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant

container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. The key to successful planting is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
Lucky to live by the Humber We’ve recently come back from a lovely holiday in Menorca. You know what it’s like on your last day. You’re looking at the view of the beach and thinking “This is what I’ll miss” - as well as the weather, of course, although I can’t complain about that! It’s been great this year! Anyway, when we came back the children were eager to go for a Pokemon Go hunt, so, with friends, we went to the Humber Bridge Country Park, then the next day we walked along the river from North Ferriby to the Country Park Inn and back again. I’m sure many of you have probably done this before, but I hadn’t and let me tell you, the view was incredible - and certainly worthy of a few photos. It’s becoming a regular walk for us at different times of the day and each time we see different colours on the landscape. And believe me, we probably have more photos of this than our holiday! Absolutely beautiful! So when others are wondering what’s in Hull and why anyone would want to live here, here’s just one reason of many! As a side benefit I’ve lost 4 pounds! And it’s pretty good for hunting Pokemon too! 38
Fiona’s Grilled Peaches This month I would like to share a seasonal recipe with you. SERVES 4 • PREPARATION 5 mins COOKING 3-4 mins INGREDIENTS • 4 large ripe peaches • 1-2tbsp sugar METHOD 1. Cut peaches along the seam all the way around and twist the halves off the stone. Heat the grill to high. 2. Sprinkle the cut surfaces of the peach halves with a layer of sugar and place on a baking tray, cut side up. 3. Place the peaches under the grill for 3-4 minutes, or until the sugar starts to caramelise. Serve with vanilla ice cream, crème fraîche or Greek yoghurt. Fiona’s Top tips There is no need to peel the fruit. to keep the peach halves steady under the grill, sit them in pieces of crumpled foil. Instead of sugar, you could also drizzle with honey or agave.

Looking 10 Years Younger Just Got Easier Welcome to the Palomar™ Fractional Laser
For Anti – Aging, Thread Veins, Acne Scarring, Stretch Marks, Rosacea, Hair removal and Melasma The Anti-aging Laser Facial What is it? Palomar™ laser skin rejuvenation is an intense laser treatment for longer lasting results. A safe, non-invasive treatment that is used to renew your skin and clear many undesirable skin imperfections on your face and body. By targeting sun damage, brown spots and wrinkles this technology provides you with clear results and beautiful skin.
How does it work?
Pulses of energy are delivered deep into the skin targeting pigment and stimulating collagen for a smoother and more even appearance. The Palomar™ laser wavelength (1540 nm) goes a little deeper than other lasers and is normally recommended for deeper wrinkles.
What should I expect after a treatment?
The laser facial works cumulatively, you should expect to see a decrease in sun damage and wrinkles resulting in smoother more even skin. Typically, most people experience a mild, sun-burn-like sensation, sometimes accompanied by mild swelling and typically lasting two to 24 hours. Treatments are spaced 3 - 4 weeks apart in order to give your body enough time to see the visible affects. For full effects between 3 to 6 treatments are recommended.
Thread Vein removal What is it?
A laser treatment that can diminish the appearance of leg veins without the pain of surgical treatments and lengthy downtime.
How does it work?
Laser light constricts the blood vessels in the legs that cause spider veins without harming surrounding tissue
What should I expect after a treatment?
Normally an immediate improvement, however this varies between individuals. Typically, most people experience a mild, sun-burn-like sensation, sometimes accompanied by mild swelling and typically lasting two to 24 hours. There is no downtime. Treatments are spaced one month apart, 1-3+ treatments are usually required to fully clear bold vessels and reduce the appearance completely
Younger looking skin with • NO RISK • NO NEEDLES • NO DOWNTIME
Treatments are pay as you go, decreasing in price with each treatment. No commitment. You come, you try, you decide. We are friendly and flexible. We look forward to seeing you.
