£45 Million Package for Flood Risk Management In 2013, I set up the River Hull Advisory Board to develop a strategy for the management and maintenance of the River Hull. The Board brought together different, and often competing, interests, to manage one of the most at risk flood plains in the whole United Kingdom. Its membership included representatives from the National Farmers Union, the Environment Agency, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Natural England, the Internal Drainage Boards, Yorkshire Water and the local community. The good news is that last month the Board agreed to adopt a new River Hull Flood Risk Management Strategy. The new strategy, which includes removing sunken vessels, raising river banks at certain points and upgrading pumping stations, amounts to a £45 million package designed to protect Hull and the East Riding.

4

This strategy is the result of over two years’ hard work by everyone involved. Maintaining the existing river defence systems is critical for Hull and the East Riding, as failing to make this continued investment could result in flood damage estimated at £3.4 billion.

Graham and the River Hull Advisory Board outside the Guildhall in Hull after agreeing the strategy. I am tremendously proud of how everyone has come together to produce a robust strategy that will help reduce the risk of flooding significantly. I want to pay tribute to the unseen contribution of so many officers across the agencies involved for working together so effectively. Flooding has a devastating impact on families and businesses across the East Riding and I will continue to campaign for more investment in flood prevention, such as a strategy for the whole Humber Estuary.

Minding the Minster

More holidays to come Although the traditional British summer holiday finishes when children go back to school it’s different in the Minster. In fact September is often one of our busiest months for roof tours and visitor numbers. It’s thanks to different generations: July and August are the times for families: parents and children or, equally often, grandparents and children. It’s a real mixture of local residents and visitors from all around the world.

6

I’ve been working here for nearly ten years and I’m still discovering fresh details and objects almost every day. But in September we virgers share our church with a different mix of people: mostly visitors to the town who are amazed that they’d never even heard of Beverley before, and often tell us it’s an ‘undiscovered gem’ (but we know that already, don’t we?)

This past month I’ve spoken to a lot of Beverlonians who’ve lived in the town for years, but came inside the Minster for the first time. We’ve tried to make them welcome so that they won’t take so long before the next visit.

Free from children, these visitors tend to be more serious in their visits, exploring nooks and crannies that the typical 20-minute tourists would miss. More of them are eager to climb the roof as well, so it’s a rare day that neither I nor my colleague John don’t strengthen our leg muscles by leading these seekers after truth into the higher planes, walking the treadwheel crane and generally giving them a tour that they’ll never forget.

However most of the locals have been in many times before and they keep coming back because there are so many new things to see each trip. I’m not surprised:

It slows down a bit in October but then, before we know it, Christmas is upon us and it’s a non-stop flurry until the new year. Still, it keeps us fit.

DEMENTIA SUPPORT FOR THE EAST RIDING The East Riding Dementia Action Alliance aims to support communities and businesses located or operating within the East Riding of Yorkshire to take low/no cost actions that enable people with dementia to be active and involved. There are over 850,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK and 1/3 of people with dementia say that they do not feel part of their community.

8

The Dementia Action Alliance would like to help businesses and organisations throughout the East Riding to create a dementia friendly community. A dementia friendly community is one in which people with dementia are empowered to have high aspirations and feel confident, knowing they can contribute and participate in activities that are meaningful to them. Towns, cities and villages across the country are now seeing what they need to do to become dementia friendly, recognising the need to act and change in order to better support people with dementia.

Many people with dementia do not feel supported and part of their local area. Everyday things we take for granted – getting to the shops, spending time with friends and family, getting money from the bank and going on holiday – are made difficult by a lack of understanding of dementia in our communities. That is why we must seek to change lives for the better not just through government, the NHS and local authorities, but by working with individuals, organisations, and communities. The Alzheimer’s Society report, ‘Dementia 2015: Aiming higher to transform lives’ contains the results of an annual survey of people with dementia and their

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Beverley, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey areas

& William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of

people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The page on East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website www.eastriding. gov.uk/ schoolstransport has been redesigned and updated for the summer holidays to make it quicker and easier to access school transport information for people whose children are starting school or changing school in September. Parents are now being encouraged to visit the webpage to make sure they apply for school travel passes in plenty of time for the start of the new term. The site also has useful information for people with children already travelling to school, such as bus routes and times, and allows them to ask questions and report any problems. Using the new website, people can: l Find out if their child is entitled to a free travel pass.

Podgy Pets

Research has shown that around 41% of dogs and 32% of cats are overweight to some degree. An overweight pet is at risk from a whole range of problems including diabetes, heart disease, skin complaints, breathing difficulties and arthritis. Weight gain in pets is normally the result of an increase in body fat. This is most commonly caused by eating too much, especially when combined with a lack of exercise. If more energy is being gained from food than is being used, the surplus will be stored in the body as fat. By maintaining a healthy weight you can help to reduce the risks associated with obesity and help your pet lead a longer, more energetic life. Other factors that contribute to obesity include; D D D D

Food type and portion sizes Genetics Stress Activity levels of your pet

Weight gain can gradually occur over a long period of time which is why it can often go unnoticed. Signs that your pet may be overweight include: D Their ribs can’t be felt without applying a fair amount of pressure D Loss of an obvious waist (and you may even notice belly wobble when walking or running) D You have had to loosen your pet’s collar several times over the past year There are many pet food brands now available which are formulated by animal nutritionists with expert guidance on portion control.

Despite this, pet obesity statistics are climbing and health problems associated with our much-loved animals being overweight are therefore also increasing. Knowing how to both recognise obesity, and manage your pet’s weight is not only part and parcel of your responsibility as a loving pet owner but it is also of prime importance in ensuring that your best friend enjoys a long, happy, healthy lifestyle. At Vets4Pets we offer free weight checks, where we will take our time to discuss your pet’s weight and diet and how you can prevent and treat any weight problems. To help get your pet on the road to a happy lifestyle why not join us on our Charity dog walk? Saturday 17th October starting at 2pm, meeting at the top of Westwood Road. Your Wedding Ceremony Your wedding ceremony is the most important of your day, but what type will you have and what do you need to do? Here are some of your options... Whether you want a religious or non-religious ceremony there are a number of wedding ceremony options available to you. Take a look at our list below to find out more…. Civil or religious ceremony?
The first thing to decide is whether you want a civil or religious wedding ceremony – have a chat with your fiancé to work out what’s best for you both. If you can’t agree, consider having a civil service followed by a religious blessing as a compromise. Civil ceremony
Civil ceremonies either take place in a register office, or in a licensed property (there are over 4,000 licensed wedding venues in the UK!). To arrange your ceremony, go to your local register office with your fiancé to both give notice of your wedding to the local superintendent registrar. If you’re marrying elsewhere, you’ll need to contact the register office in the area where you want to marry to check that they have a registrar available on the wedding date.

18

Take along identification, proof of your address and nationality,

any previous marriage documents and details of your venue in order to complete the documentation for giving notice. Once issued, the notice will be displayed for 15 days at the register office before you can legally marry. Once your marriage licence is issued it’s valid for a year, unless you change venues.
It costs £35 per person to give notice. Other costs depend on where you’re getting married – the fee to hold the ceremony in your local register office is usually less than the fee to have a registrar come to your venue.
 Church of England wedding ceremony
“Laws on where you can marry changed a few years ago, making it easier to marry in a church away from where you live,” explains Ruth Green from the Church of England Weddings Team. “Visit yourchurchwedding.org where you can search for churches.

Please mention BEVERLEYMAG when responding to our advertisers. Thank you.

Autumn Weddings Once you’ve found one, get in touch with the Vicar, and they’ll guide you on what happens next.”
The cost of a church wedding is around £350 – expect to pay extra for flowers or a choir.
 Humanist wedding ceremony
A humanist ceremony is a non-religious wedding ceremony gives you the opportunity to marry where you want, but they are not recognised in law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Couples will often go to the register office to take care of the legal formalities in the days before their humanist wedding. However most couples still regard their humanist ceremony as their ‘real’ wedding and will write their own vows and hire a humanist celebrant. Roman Catholic wedding ceremony
Take your baptism and confirmation certificates to your priest at least six months before you want to marry. If one of you is not baptised, you need to get permission from the priest. He’ll also help you to arrange marriage preparation classes, and you need to attend Mass for six weeks before your wedding day. You’ll also need to visit your local register office to give notice and obtain your marriage licence.

Local News “We are of course looking forward to welcoming everyone to a spectacular year of events in Hull that we hope will excite, inspire and encourage more people to see, experience and participate in arts and culture. “Alongside this, there will be opportunities for people in Hull and the East Riding to get involved in our volunteering and education programmes and, with the national and international spotlight on Hull, the opportunity to shine a light on the talent and cultural offer of the whole area.”

is an important step forward in ensuring that happens. It also builds on the partnership work we are already doing through Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY) to promote the area as a leading tourist destination. “Working together, we will ensure that everything is in place to give all of our visitors a great welcome in 2017.” “Residents and arts organisations across Hull and East Riding should sign up to the Hull 2017 newsletter at www. hull2017.co.uk or follow us @2017Hull for all the latest information about how to get involved.

The Beverley FM Saturday Breakfast Show with Karl Svenson Well known local lad Karl Svenson is the man that gets Saturdays off to the perfect start on Beverley FM. Broadcasting between 8am and 10am; Karl has all the weekend information you need without the waffle and clutter found elsewhere on your radio!

My second confession, and I will deny this to any jazz aficionado, is that I am very aware of the reputation that certain genres of jazz has with those who hear, not music, but a cacophony of sound. My only rule, therefore, was that I would only play those tracks from my collection in which the listener could hear a tune and/or made me tap my feet. Hence the title “Tuneful Jazz”. The programme goes out every Sunday evening at eight so, if you would like to find out what the show, and jazz come to think of it, is all about, why not join me? I’d love your company.

Music For All Tastes Country with Peter Fairhead - Sundays at 2pm and Mondays at 9pm Jazz with Billy Bell - Sundays at 8pm Sven, as he likes to be known, grew up in Beverley and is a respected broadcasting professional with many years radio experience, his programme is a fun filled mix of information, music, sport, and news all with a distinctively local feel. When Sven started his radio career in 1985 he never thought that Beverley would have its own radio station, however 30 years later when Beverley FM was announced he was one of the first to offer to donate his time to produce programmes on his ‘local’ radio station.

Billy Bell - A self-confessed Jazz fan! My name is Billy Bell and I present a programme called “Tuneful Jazz” for Beverley FM. From its inauguration, the station’s aim has always been to provide, as we say, something for everyone. I suppose that my role is therefore to provide a “specialised view” of a neglected area of music. I am a self-confessed jazz fan with a very healthy collection of just about every genre in the jazz catalogue. Back in the days when Beverley FM was in the preparation stages, I was asked if I would like to present a weekly jazz programme playing music of my choice. At this point, I must make my first confession, I had never been near a radio station, let alone a microphone, but I was reassured by the fact that Andy Fea, an old mate of mine, would be there to hold my hand.

Classical with Judith Haslam - Sundays at 7am and 9pm Choral – Sundays at 8am 50’s with John Escreet - Sundays at 10am 60’s with Dave Hudson - Mondays at 7pm 70’s with Dave Hudson - Mondays at 8pm Folk with Max Roberts - Tuesdays at 7pm Rock and Roll with Dave Hutchins Tuesdays at 8pm 80’s with Andy Fea - Wednesdays at 7pm Soul and Motown with Karl Svenson Wednesdays at 9pm Blues with Tom Render - Thursdays at 7pm Soft Rock with Claire Bell - Thursdays at 8pm Reggae with Nic Gough - Thursdays at 9pm Dance with Jed Pearson - Fridays at 8pm Local Artists with Andy Fea - Saturdays at 11am Classic Hits - Every day, All day long!

Get Your Mindset Right - with Andy Lock

Most of us start our own business having being previously employed and sometimes we take the employee mindset into our new business which can really hold us back without us realising. You believe that you are self employed but the reality is that you are probably working harder than ever, and to make it worse you are now working for a nutter! You! This presentation talks through the various aspects of running your own business, with suggestions and examples of how you can change the way you work to make you more successful. It will also challenge the beliefs that you have, and explain how we selfsabotage our own business’ without even realising it. This will be relevant to all business owners, but particularly those that are in the first few years of existence, those who feel that they have reached a point where they are working far too many hours and cannot see a way to make that change, or those that just cannot increase their profits, whatever they try.

FIND OUT ABOUT FOSTERING

lesbian or gay, can be foster carers.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is hoping to recruit more foster carers, particularly for children aged from five to 15.

Dave Glenville, the council’s fostering team leader, said: “Almost anyone can apply to be a foster carer. We recognise that families come in all shapes and sizes, but, as with any career, some people will be more suited to it than others.

A ‘Find out about fostering’ information event will be held at Tickton Grange Hotel on Monday 14 September, at 6pm. Anyone who is considering becoming a foster carer is welcome to go along.

“The information event is designed to give people who are interested in fostering a chance to meet people who are already involved and find out if becoming a foster carer is for them.”

In addition, potential foster carers can also find out more by watching a short film, which can be found by visiting the council’s webpage at www.eastriding.gov.uk/fostering and clicking on the video link.

Anyone interested in finding out more about becoming a foster carer, or would like to book a place at the event, can contact the fostering team on (01482) 396673.

At the information event, people interested in becoming a foster carer will have an opportunity to talk to fostering social workers and discuss suitability; meet foster carers and their birth children; talk to looked after young people and hear about their experiences; and find out about free professional training. Prospective foster carers should ideally be over 25, they can be single, married or co-habiting. People with or without families, heterosexual,

What’s On

Celebrating Vintage, Retro and Pre-loved By Paula Duggan (Vintage home enthusiast & dealer)

38

I grew up with an older generation that regarded buying anything other than new shameful. Thankfully attitudes have changed since then and with its green credentials, the taboo associated with second-hand, pre-loved, vintage, call it whatever you like, has all but vanished. Looking to the past to furnish your home is not only a fun way to shop but also can make economical sense. Antiques, considered the most glamorous form of recycling there is, have already stood the test of time and are likely to survive for many more centuries to come, making them a sound investment and something to pass down the generations. In many cases it is still possible to pick up a unique piece for the same price as modern flat-pack furniture. Most antique and vintage furnishings tend to be brown but that doesn’t mean that they have to stay brown! Chalk paints are widely available in a rainbow of colours and are easy to use, with most pieces just needing the one coat to bring them into the 21st century. Similarly, handles can be changed and upholstery replaced to blend with contemporary themes. If you are looking for something that bit more rustic or glamorous then consider the increasingly popular industrial style where pieces are salvaged from long closed factories, schools and fair grounds. These places turn up show stoppers, often with titanic proportions, which blend surprisingly easily into modern environments. Lighting, mirrors, desks, seating and dining tables with highly polished metal surfaces combined with worn wooden surfaces provide a stylish alternative to the more traditional home furnishings.

If you just want to add a splash of character then try using post war British ceramics, glass and textiles by well known designers from this time. Textiles in particular are highly versatile and can be bought on a budget and transformed into wall art or cushions; small changes that can give an instant make over to any room. If you are not nifty with a sewing machine then you can find upcycled soft furnishings alongside vintage homewares and furniture at the following vintage fairs. Pick of September Raspberry ‘Autumn Bliss’

Just from time to time, while fooling about in the garden, you pop something in your mouth in passing and everything stops while you’re transported into another plane of total ecstasy. The kind of closed-eyes, blissed-out ‘mmmmmm’ moment that only people who grow their own food get to experience. Oh, all right, I’ve seen a similar expression on the faces of student friends who popped over to enjoy a chocolate fondue (a monster bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, perhaps a Toblerone or two, and a carton of double cream, plus marshmallows and Mars Bars to dip in. We really knew how to live in the ’80s).

40

But chocolate fondues, while one of those essential bucket-list experiences everyone should have at least once in a lifetime, are not something you can do every day (not if you want to live past 30, anyway). Whereas eating an overflowing fistful of perfectly ripe, plump raspberries fresh from the cane most certainly is.

By now, when the far heavier-cropping ‘Autumn Bliss’ is in full flow as well, I have treacherously handed over my heart fully and passionately to the raspberry.

Round about mid-August, my sworn allegiance to the strawberry as my all-time favourite fruit starts to wobble as the first fruits of my summer raspberries, ‘Glen Ample’, start appearing on the canes.

I secretly prefer autumn raspberries, though I do grow both types. Summer raspberries are prima donnas: they crop fitfully for me, and I’ve never quite understood why it’s accepted wisdom that

Gardening summer varieties are heavier yielding and more reliable. Perhaps it’s because I’m a softy southerner (summer raspberries are also said to do better in cooler climates) but I’ve always found quite the opposite: autumn raspberries start being productive sooner, crop more heavily and go on for weeks longer than summer ones. In fact my ‘Glen Ample’ canes are going to have to pull their little raspberry fingers out if they want to cling on to garden space in my fruit patch. Even more so since I recently discovered double cropping: a crafty little pruning technique which means you can have raspberries from July to the first frosts, from the same canes. If space is limited, it’s the only way to grow. Autumn-fruiting raspberries are usually pruned just once a year, in midwinter: you just work your way along the row, take out all the canes down to the ground, and that’s it. They fruit on this year’s new growth (unlike summer raspberries, which fruit on one-yearold stems), so the new canes which emerge in spring will bear that year’s fruit. Now forget all that and throw the pruning book out the window. There’s another way of doing it that brings the harvesting season well into summer – giving you months more berries. It’s pretty straightforward. At the end of autumn, instead of cutting the whole stand to the ground, prune out only the canes which

have fruited, leaving the others in the ground (a little like you would for summer types). These grow on into next year, fruiting much earlier than usual and giving you your summer crop. Next spring’s shoots still emerge, just as they would normally, giving you an autumn crop, too. Et voilà: summer and autumn raspberry crops on the same canes. You can do this with just about any autumn raspberry variety. Most will yield a higher weight of fruit under a double-cropping system: in a recent Which? trial the ‘Autumn Bliss’ harvest rocketed from 2.5kg on a conventional system, to 5.75kg when double-cropped. And anything which more than doubles your raspberry-eating pleasure has got to be worth a try.

Big is beautiful Look what I found in the pumpkin patch. Isn’t it the fattest, plumpest, most pumpkiny pumpkin you ever did see? You can probably guess I’m inordinately proud of it: I suspect it may even be the biggest pumpkin I’ve ever grown. I even measured it: 115cm – that’s nearly four feet – around the girth, in case you’re interested. I don’t have the scales to weigh it, even if I could lift it up, which I can’t. Actually, you can work out a guesstimate of the weight of a pumpkin from its circumference: an even better way is to measure its OTT (Over The Top) – the distance from blossom end to stem end, plus the distance from the ground on one side, across the top of the pumpkin to the ground on the other. You then use the figures with an OTT table to figure out the weight of your pumpkin. Or, if you’re me and can’t be bothered and don’t in any case need to know to the nearest ounce, just measure your circumference and use the circumference chart instead. By this reckoning my baby weighs a cool 18.3kg (40.3lbs). Not bad. Growing big pumpkins, rather like producing 11ft sunflowers or mind-blowingly fat marrows, defies all logic. What I’m going to do with the best part of 40 lbs of pumpkin flesh I have no idea. I don’t even like pumpkin that much. But I don’t care: it’s so damn

Gardening satisfying. Minus the shading leaves, and after turning the pumpkin over as it was growing ‘stem down’, this side should turn as red as the other. I’m hoping this one might change my mind about the eating value, mind you. It’s ‘Rouge Vif d’Etampes’: and as regular readers will know, if it’s French, I’ll grow it, on the grounds that les grenouilles know a thing or two about good food and are incapable of contemplating a vegetable variety without exceptional flavour. Even better, the French are still growing it and loving it at least 180 years after its debut in Parisian markets. It’s described as milder than most pumpkins (great: pumpkins are usually so sweet they overpower any dish you put them in) and a great base for soups. So far, so promising. Of course, my ‘giant’ is puny compared to the real monsters, the Continued on Page 44

Hundredweights and what have you. It’s not long till pumpkin competition season now, and we’ve already been promised a potential new UK record holder to beat the 689.5kg (1520lb) behemoth produced in 2013 by Mark Baggs in Dorset. Even that beast – requiring a horsebox and forklift truck to move it – is a mere squirt by comparison to the world record holder grown by Ron Wallace of Massachusetts USA: 911.27kg, or 2,009lbs to you sir. Well, they have more sunshine over there. But I don’t really need, or want, over 900 kilos of pumpkin flesh. Imagine all the soup. So I’m quite happy with my own quiet little triumph, a Sally’s Garden record holder at least, and as much pumpkin as anyone could reasonably get through in a season. Before I cut it away to bear triumphantly into the kitchen, though, there’s some work to be done. Pumpkins have quite soft skins at this stage in their growing lives, and if you’re going to store them for any length of time you have to ‘cure’, or ripen, the outer layer so it

hardens into a carapace protecting the flesh within. Do it properly, and your pumpkin will last for months and months – I’ve used particularly good keepers in late spring before with no appreciable loss of freshness. This technique works for winter squash, too, though some (like butternuts) store less well than others (like Turk’s Turban, perhaps, or Kabocha). When I say less well, I mean for three months rather than six; so just eat your stored butternuts first and you’ll never even notice. 1: Remove the leaves covering your fruit so it’s fully exposed to the sun. Don’t completely strip the plant: just remove enough leaves to expose your fruit. 2: Hitch the fruit up onto bricks, bits of wood or whatever you have to hand: a pallet works well for really huge pumpkins. The idea is that you lift the skin clear of the ground (and therefore slugs and dampness can’t damage it) – and at the same time allow air to circulate underneath too. 3: Turn smaller pumpkins and squashes by about a quarter every few days, to ripen the fruit evenly (to avoid twisting the stem right off, just revolve it 180 degrees one way, then 180 degrees back again). I’ve never quite figured out how you’re supposed to do this with a giant pumpkin: my guess is, judging by the undeniably squished shape of most whoppers, you don’t.

Gardening 4: If you haven’t already pinched out smaller fruits through the season, do so now. You want to leave around three or four maturing fruits on your vine and remove any pale, small fruits now: they’ll never reach full size anyway, given how late in the season it is, and you want your plant concentrating all its efforts on the fruit it already has. 5: After a couple of weeks of this, the colour should be fully developed – deep burnt red for my ‘Rouge Vif’s or a lovely warm orange for Hundredweights and Autumn Giants – and the fruit should sound hollow when you knock it. The stem may be starting to look a little shrivelled and dry too. At this point, cut the fruit with around 10cm of stem and bring it indoors to keep somewhere cool (but frost free) and dry. FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

SUNDAY DINNERS – A THING OF THE PAST? Well I hope not! I don’t know if any of you have ever watched the American crime drama Blue Bloods. I must say it’s one of my favourites. It stars Tom Selleck as New York’s chief of police and patriarch of the Reagan clan, a multi generational family of cops. Anyway, as well as some great storylines, during every episode the family sits down for Sunday dinner. What I like so much about this is that Sunday dinner is something that many people don’t take time for anymore. For many Sunday is simply another day of the week, just an extra day to go shopping. I know that a lot of people work weekends, but the concept of sitting down together as a family any day of the week is being lost – and it’s a crying shame. It’s a time when you can catch up with each other, check that everyone’s OK and enjoy time together. I know it’s an important time in our house and even if we can’t have it at lunchtime we make time to have a later dinner. So if you and your family haven’t sat 46 down to dinner together for a while, make the effort! And if you do the cooking, make someone else wash up! I knew there was something I was doing wrong!!!!

IS IT AUTUMN ALREADY? Oh my goodness, where did the summer holidays go? And we had 7 weeks this time. It always drags at the beginning, doesn’t it? Then all of a sudden it’s all about buying new uniform, new school shoes, new pencil cases, winter coats – you get my drift! Back to normal, back to school, after school activities, homework, music practice and trying to find some “down” time too so everyone’s not exhausted! Remember, organisation is everything. Don’t forget to write everything down so you don’t forget who is doing what, where and when! Be assured, my trusty kitchen calendar is as busy as ever!

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! I know, I know. We’ve only just finished summer and I guess the next think on the agenda is Halloween, but the way the year’s going, Christmas will be here before you know it, so it’s time to get your plans into action. I am absolutely not the best person to say this, and I usually have great intentions of being super prepared by the end of November, but in reality that never happens. Wouldn’t it be great if it did though?!! Maybe I’ll surprise myself this year! I’ll let you know how it goes! Fiona x
