The rides will form a circular tour starting in Thorne, via Scunthorpe, Grimsby and then on through Beverley to Whitby, Northallerton, York and back to Beverley on 29th June. Beverley Exhibition for Local Artist Artist Claire West will be holding an exhibition of her work in Beverley shop Amanti this June. The exhibition will launch on Friday 13 June with a “Meet the Artist” evening at Amanti when Claire will be on hand to discuss her work, technique and inspiration. Entitled “Be Happy”, the exhibition will be the first opportunity for the public to see a number of new works including paintings inspired by the landmarks of Beverley, Claire’s home town. Claire says:
“I enjoy producing contemporary paintings and prints of the Beverley area, using the iconic images of the Blackmill and Beverley Minster. Beverley has been painted many times by artists but most commonly in a traditional fashion. By producing colourful modern images I hope to show the vibrancy of this brilliant town. Exhibiting my work at Amanti is wonderful as it shows people how they can marry good contemporary design and art work within their own interiors.”

6

Amalia Booker, joint owner of Amanti tells us that they are keen to support local artists whenever possible. “Claire’s work is bright, bold and complex. She paints to make people feel happy and you can see the joy that shines out of her work. Her reputation is growing nationally and she’s exhibiting in very well respected galleries across the UK so we’re absolutely delighted to be able to show her work here at Amanti.”

Beverley To Get Its Own Local FM Radio Station Ofcom Confirms Licence Award to ‘Beverley FM’ The UK broadcasting authority Ofcom confirmed that East Yorkshire Broadcasting Ltd. trading as Beverley FM has been awarded an FM broadcast licence to serve over 47,000 people living in Beverley and the surrounding villages. Following the allocation of a broadcast frequency by Ofcom, Beverley FM will transmit an exciting mix of music, entertainment, news, and sport, all with a distinctly local feel, 24 hours a day from studios in the town.

Buy NOW Pay r Late 10

Beverley FM has been set up by a group of local businessmen and radio professionals led by Dave Fewster the well-known Beverley based radio presenter. “We are delighted to have been awarded a licence. For a long time the town has needed a radio station that is locally based and puts the interests of Beverley before those of Hull” Dave said. “I have felt for many years that a radio station broadcasting from Beverley would not only be very popular in the local area, but will become a vehicle for young people to gain broadcasting experience and employment in the industry,” he added. Beverley FM becomes one of the new not-for-profit community radio stations of which there are over 200 in the UK currently licensed by Ofcom. For the last 12 months Beverley FM has been streaming programmes on the Internet from a dedicated website at www.beverleyfm.com. Beverley FM director Roy Harteveld said that public support for the streaming “has exceeded our wildest expectations and confirmed our belief that the public really do want their own radio station in Beverley.” No FM on-air date has been announced yet but is anticipated to be within the next few months.

GARDENING

BeverleyMag JUNE 2014

5 Steps to Become a Better Gardener... Often times, we as gardeners, struggle with the simplest things,” says Ian Ashbridge, director of horticulture at Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre. “I’ve developed five rules to make you a better gardener.” They are: 1. USE WHAT YOU HAVE. We may love that full-sun perennial, but if we garden in the shade, we should look for plants that do well there. You can bend some rules, but finding the right plants for the right space is not guesswork. Do your research. 3. CULTIVATE FRIENDS. One of the most rewarding parts of gardening is the social aspect. Share your plants. Perennials love to be divided; this recharges and invigorates the plants. Do you have a neighbour that always raves about a plant in your garden? Share a piece. Get involved in your local gardening club. Most of my favourite plants have come to me as gifts from family, friends and colleagues. I really do enjoy giving plants away too.

12

2. KEEP A JOURNAL. Record things like where a plant came from, dates that you plant, divide and harvest. Write down the problems you run into and the solutions you find. You’ll be surprised how handy this becomes year after year. Many times, problems can be avoided or success can be achieved by reading over what has been done in the past.

4. MULCH. Top-dressing with good mulch improves gardens. It’s a scientific fact. Mulched soils stay cooler in the summer and mulch helps regulate swings in moisture. Mulch insulates plants in the winter and regulates soil temperatures better then un-mulched ground. I like to use a composted hardwood bark. As mulch breaks down, nutrients become available to your plants and the microbiology of the soil improves.

5. SPEND TIME IN YOUR GARDEN. Enjoy the space you’ve created. When we spend time in the garden with our hands in the soil and our knees on the ground, something special happens. We connect with our surroundings in a way that can’t happen through a window. This familiar adage is true: The best fertilizer is the shadow of the gardener. Enjoy your garden! LOCAL STUDIES CATALOGUE AT BEVERLEY TREASURE HOUSE It will be much easier to find out about local history books and articles at Beverley’s Treasure House now as a result of work by the East Riding archives and local studies service. A huge number of books and journal articles can now be searched online.

16

The newly completed catalogue means you can find out about the 15,000 books and 19,500 journal articles in the local studies collection. It is a mine of information for anybody interested in their local community as there are books about every town and village in the East Riding as well as titles for Hull, York and other parts of Yorkshire. The collection includes the antiquarian books donated to Beverley Library in 1929 by John Champney, benefactor of the library and art gallery. The catalogue will be helpful to anybody who has an interest in local history and covers a vast range of subjects. So, whether you want to find out about local schools, churches, industries, archaeology, or social life then the local studies books are a fantastic resource. You cannot borrow books because this is the East Riding’s main reference collection and contains many rare or unique items. But you can now find out what you want in the catalogue from the comfort of your own home before coming to the Treasure House to look at them. The catalogue is integrated with the archives as well, which means when you search it you can find out about all the documents, books and articles in the Treasure House’s collections. Archives Manager, Ian Mason, says: All our card indexes have been consigned to the dustbin of history

as we now have a finding aid for local studies that is fit for the 21st century. This is the result of an enormous amount of work put in by all the staff in the archives and local studies service who have entered and edited information. “Since the Treasure House opened in 2007 it has been the ambition of the service to have an integrated online catalogue for both the archives and books and I am delighted to announce that this has been achieved. It will make searching for local history books and articles so much easier for our users.” The catalogue can be found online at: http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/CalmView/

Hot news … This fabulous new itinerary we have for next year departs from Liverpool on 27 May 2015. This nine night cruise takes in Kirkwall before exploring the fabulous ports of the Norwegian Fjords (Alesund, Geiranger, Flaam, Gudvangen, Bergen) arriving back into our very own port of Hull. The starting price of just £899 per person sharing a twin cabin includes a 25% early booking bonus (or buy one get one half price) this is a bargain. Your ship… having just experienced the newly remodelled Funchal I have to say it has been money well spent. This once tired and dated little gem of the ocean is unrecognisable as she has been totally transformed into a truly elegant lady of the seas. The decor onboard is very relaxed with a modern twist, appealing to traditional style cruisers who enjoy a small and friendly ship experience with a country house feel. Attention to detail is second to non and this is carried throughout the ship by her friendly and courteous crew. Holding just over 500 passengers she can get into the heart of her itinerary ports with elegance and ease. Dining onboard is a fabulous affair and everyone can be seated in one sitting plus there are also a number of tables for 2 available. Why not compliment your culinary delights with a bottle of wine from the ship owner’s award winning Portugese vineyard at only 15 Euros a bottle for a quality wine you will not be disappointed! In fact all drinks on board are great value. The ships cabins are fairly spacious with more than enough room for you to hang your belongings. With only five single inside cabins onboard these will be extremely popular. There is a range of cabins from inside to suites with an ocean view. The lounge areas for your evening entertainment are conveniently situated on one deck, along with the delightful and compact shopping arcade. There is even a small out of the way casino with slots for your gambling pleasure along with a library and card room. There is also plenty of outdoor space to view your ever changing scenery from or perhaps take a dip in the pool. This offer is valid until 31 August 2014, but please do not delay. I travel along with all of our own tours that are financially protected with our own abta license Y2812 and look forward to you joining me on this unique departure, call today to book your cabin. Science & Local News

Fracking: The Science, The Process, Politics and Environmental Concerns Hydraulic Fracturing (Hydrofracturing) is mostly known as Fracking or Fraccing, it was invention by Floyd Farris and J.B. Clark in 1947.

Science/Process Fracking is the process of extracting Natural Gas and Petroleum from deep underground. Fracking companies drill vertically and horizontally along the layers where the hydrocarbons are located. A liquid mixture of water, sand and chemicals is forced through the piping under very high pressure (9000psi), it passes through small

Environmental Concerns Does Fracking cause earthquakes: (Yes) According to the research by the U.S. Geological Survey, the process of Fracking make thousands of small cracks in the rock, which increases the chances of the rock slippage that can cause earthquakes, however these earthquakes are minor earthquakes (1,000 times a day) that are so weak that you couldn’t feel them. The organisation (Department of Energy & Climate Change) that monitors fracking prevents fracking sites being within a certain distance of each other, preventing the cracks from joining up; forming larger cracks that can generate larger earthquakes and tremors. Can chemicals leak into the water table or environment: (No) The chemicals are in a deep well (3,000 – 10,000ft) that is heavily reinforce by concrete and there is a layer of hard rock above the well that is impermeable so that liquid cannot pass through. The water table is 6 – 120ft below the surface, well above the well. Words: Matthew Cooper, Science Contributor Reference: Mike Norton. (2013). File:HydroFrac2.svg. Available: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HydroFrac2.svg.

permeable holes in the piping into the rock and rock cavities which expand to 1mm and crack the rock. The water is drawn back out and the sand remains in the crack to keep the channels open, the fuel/ gas then passes through the channels and up to the surface. The chemicals that are used make the sand more permeable increasing the flow of fuel, these chemicals are steadily drawn back to the surface with the flow of fuel, the chemical agent is then separated from the fuel and disposed of by burying them in a reinforced well.

Walkington Anti-Fracking Protest

Crawberry Hill outside Walkington is the site of a camp set up by anti-fracking campaigners. The camp has already attracted over twenty protestors from the Frack Off group. They are there to protest and seek answers from Raitlin Energy (UK) Limited about the well at the site between Walkington and Bishop Burton as well as another site at West Newton near Aldbrough.

Politics New developments in fracking has allowed engineers to conduct horizontal drilling; this has increased the amount of fuel that can be extracted to 60 – 70%, where as in the past with only vertical drilling they could only extracte 5 – 20% of the fuel. Recently a large Hydrocarbon site has been discovered in Hampshire just below Oxford, which is worth £1.4 trillion. To put this into perspective, we could clear the countries national debt 14 times over. The money involved coupled with the new developments make it a far more profitable process to extract the fuel. However, it remains to be seen if the financial benefits outweigh the environmental risks. EVERY MONTH BEVERLEYMAG GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO WIN GREAT TICKETS & GREAT PRIZES

In 1605, he became a member of the infamous Gunpowder Plot, led by Robert Catesby. The plan involved assassinating King James l of England and Vl of Scotland, kidnapping his daughter Princess Elizabeth, and blowing up the House of Lords. He was later killed as part of his involvement, in 1605.

He 26 prayed at the tomb of Saint John of Beverley, and the monks were so impressed with his devotion, they gave him the flag of Bishop John to take into battle. The King then went on to win the Battle of Brunanburgh, and united all of England under one Saxon throne for the first time.

We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?

There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!

Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.

Gig of The Month - Jeni & Billy In the past four years, Jeni & Billy have travelled from their home in East Nashville over 150,000 miles throughout the USA & Canada -- and hopped across the Atlantic three times -- just to paint those pictures in song for thousands of people. At festivals and fiddlers’ conventions along the way, they have picked up ribbons in songwriting, traditional folk-singing, guitar-picking, and flatfoot dancing.

Novelist Lee Smith says, “Jeni and Billy’s stunningly original music is as old as the hills, yet brand new at the same time. Jeni is a true poet and a born storyteller, through and through -- many of her songs contain whole novels. “

“Jeni’s songs spring from the true vine. Billy is the perfect partner, skillfully accompanying Jeni with guitar, banjo and harmonies. These two are tradition bearers -- the next generation of traditional music,”

FIONA’S WORD By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME

30

This is an increasingly hot topic at this time of year and it can be very difficult, as a parent, to make the right call. Of course, the majority of us agree that children should be in school during term time and it’s not a good option to take them out of the classroom. But with the dramatically increasing number of parents being fined for doing exactly that, something surely has to change. High prices of holidays during school breaks is one of the main contributing factors, so surely we, and the government, should be putting more pressure on the greedy holiday companies who double and triple their prices as soon as school breaks up. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see what changes, if any, they will make to pricing if more schools start to use their new powers to set their term dates. ON-LINE SHOPPING

On-line shopping seems to be great – and I’m always amazed when it works and my package gets delivered or I’ve reserved it and picked it up in store! I always think “This is definitely the way to shop. I must do that more often!” But do I? No I don’t! I don’t know why that is, but I think I may have to change my habits. It saves so much time and takes a lot of the stress out of shopping. Although if you’re waiting for something and it doesn’t arrive on time, what then? And what about buying clothes online? I’ve done it for the children because I know what size to buy, but not for myself. I like to try things on to see how they fit and it just sounds like too much of a hassle to start ordering different sizes and sending the wrong one back. Is that lazy? Am I missing something? I probably am. Perhaps I’ll experiment! Saying that, I’m slightly concerned that I might enjoy shopping for clothes online much more than my credit card will!
