Editor’s note
Welcome to the August 2020 edition of the magazine. I hope that all our readers are keeping safe and well as the economy and life in general slowly moves back towards some kind of new normality. I doubt very much if we will see anything like the pre-pandemic normality (which we all probably took for granted) return this side of Christmas. I know so many friends, neighbours, clients, business associates and family members that are still on furlough or have now lost their jobs. I think that the legacy of these times will remain with us for a very long time to come and worry for the future of businesses both locally and nationally. Please support the advertisers within the magazine as well as all those locally who depend on our trade and custom. I know from speaking with so many of them that they do appreciate the patronage of local people and other local businesses - we are the lifeblood of the local economy and must dig deep to help one another during these unprescedented times. We have an interesting and varied range of topics that we cover in this edition with articles on Returning To Work, FSB membership benefits for all you small business owners, Shopping Trends with Toothpaste Tablets and Roy Woodcock takes a look at the new Jeep Wrangler. The Food & Drink section - as always - has great places to eat out and eat in plus a seasonal recipe from Riverford Organics. We also have interesting articles with Rebekahs Beauty Box, our regular Wine column, Travel with Marion Owen as well as local news stories and Gardening advice. As usual we finish off with Fiona Dwyer’s ‘food for thought’.

Why Everyone’s Trying Toothpaste Tablets Did you know that more than a billion toothpaste tubes are thrown away every year? It’s no wonder experts are looking for alternative options. Toothpaste tablets use only the most important ingredients, reduce your carbon footprint and effectively clean teeth. Here are five other reasons to have them on your radar… They Work Just Like A Paste While you may be curious as to how effective a tablet can clean, rest assured they’re as effective as their traditional toothpaste counterparts. “Since these new, up and coming tablets are mostly designed by dentists, you can expect them to perform at a high level,” says Dr Rhona Eskander, dentist & founder of Parla. “For our tablets, we’ve taken out the harmful bits. Many mainstream toothpastes have abrasive particles which can cause permanent damage to the enamel. We remove SLS too, which is known to be harsh but we always include fluoride – the key ingredient that prevents tooth decay and is often left out of pastes. The magic is in their clever formulas – not too much or too little.”
You Can Still Use Them With A Brush The idea is to chew one tablet twice a day, wet your toothbrush and then start brushing as normal. To begin with, it may feel like your brushing with a paracetamol, but you soon get the minty taste, while being confident there are no harsh chemicals inside. “You still need to use the mechanical action of your brush to ensure you’re benefiting in the same way as you would, normally,” says Dr Rhona. “It’s an adjustment, but you soon get used to it.” Tablets Help Reduce Your Carbon Footprint A key benefit is that tablets tend to be housed in a jar – not a plastic tube. “The tubes are contributing to the global plastic problem,” adds

Dr Rhona. “It’s said that 1.5 million toothpaste tubes enter the ocean every year, let alone the rest of the environment. On top of that, many pastes contain SLS, which is not only an irritant, but is also a derivative of palm oil, which is harmful to the environment.” You’ll find most of the jars these new tablets are housed in are glass, and better still, products like Parla are refillable, so you never have to worry about excess waste. They Are Much More TravelFriendly Tablets aren’t in liquid form, which saves on mess and makes them brilliant for travel. You can pop a pill (so to speak) wherever you are
for an instant clean-feeling, too. Dr Rhona agrees: “When we’re all back to normal, they’re great for chewing on-the-go – whether you’re on a plane, at a festival or getting ready for a meeting. They’re simple, but so effective.” The Bottom Line… Finally, it’s worth remembering we swallow 5-7% of our toothpaste every time we brush, so these cleaner alternatives are well worth investigating. Always look out for the tablets ingredients: you’ll find most exclude artificial sweeteners, colourants and dyes but be sure to buy ones containing fluoride for a full and thorough clean.

Hull Trade Fireplaces offer the highest quality fires, fireplaces and stoves at the lowest possible prices. Established in 2016, Hull Trade Fireplaces began trading from a warehouse on Courtney Street Industrial Estate. Their first year of trading from the warehouse proved more successful than they had ever anticipated so it was decided due to the enormous popularity and demand they were receiving, a better location would give them even more footfall and passing trade and allow them to expand the business even further. Having weighed up their options, they decided as a team that a relocation to Holderness Road would be a big stride in the right direction for helping build their ever growing business.

8 Ways To Make Your Mark At Work Post-Furlough Around one-quarter of the UK workforce – has been furloughed. If you’re returning to work – and are going back having taken a bit of a blow to your confidence – here’s how to make your mark and get back into the swing of things. TAKE TIME TO REFLECT
Just because you’re ‘back to normal’ doesn’t mean everything is as it once was. In fact, experts say it’s a good idea to take a step back and reflect on everything that’s happened before diving back in to ensure you have clarity and peace of mind. “In those first days back at work it’s worth reflecting back on the day or the elements of the day that you’ve found useful or that you’ve enjoyed,” says Richard Reid, psychologist and founder of Pinnacle Therapy. “This will help gather momentum and reconfigure the overriding view that we have of this experience – it doesn’t mean that suddenly work will become your favourite thing again, but it might help make a return to work feel a little bit more manageable.”
CHECK IN
On your first day back, whether it be in the office or WFH, business coach Vonnie Alexander advises checking in with your immediate managers to get up to speed. She explains: “You’re trying to feel your way around the business and to reconnect on every level, so check in with what’s been going on in the wider business. How is everything going? What’s been good and what’s been challenging about the
More than anything, it’s important for you to have clarity – what’s being entrusted to you and what are you accountable for? Other questions will help you go further if the scope to do so is there, so consider asking, ‘What can I do that will make the biggest difference to the business/project/to you?’ or ‘What else/more can I do to help?’”
COMMUNICATE & RE-CONNECT WITH ENTHUSIASM
Vonnie also says it’s worth trying to communicate your enthusiasm to be back – just remember to balance that with explaining how you’ve kept busy during your time on furlough. “It doesn’t all have to be about sourdough or banana bread – make sure you can make sense of your time out and build the narrative you wish to share,” she advises. “Also, try to find ways to connect with people now you’re back. This could be people you work with directly or indirectly. Ask how they have been. Everyone’s experience of lockdown will have been unique, so be sure to check in with others with sensitivity.”
last few months? What’s changed? Understand what the expectations are around working from home versus working in the office. What are the new protocols and behaviours you need to be aware of On a Similar Note when in work?”
ESTABLISH A NEW STRUCTURE
ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
While it’s totally reasonable to expect your manager to brief you on your return, it’s important to have some questions ready to ensure you cover the bases and know where you stand. “A good manager will have thought about how to re-allocate work to anyone who is returning from furlough,” confirms Vonnie. “Ask questions specific to the work you are being tasked with, especially around your responsibilities and key milestones. You may find your role has shifted and that more is expected of you.
Getting your mind back into ‘work mode’ is crucial to making a good impression on your return – not to mention catching up with a potential backlog of work. “It’s really about putting some routines in place,” says Richard. “The most obvious way to do that is to get back into a habit of getting up at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time. Also, for those working from home, put a stricter structure in place around the hours you work, so you start to get into a habit of how it will be. Another thing that may help is to start to dress in your typical work attire again. For many people putting on their work attire is like wearing a uniform – it helps us to get back into that mindset. These structures start to work like going back to the gym again, getting those mental muscles back into the habit of operating in that way.”
GET BACK IN TOUCH – SENSITIVELY
When getting back in touch with relevant parties – specifically clients – it’s important to express how pleased you are to be back, says Vonnie. Just remember to be sensitive to any personal situations which might be developing in the background. “Ask how they have been – you don’t know what your clients’ experiences of lockdown has been. They may have suffered personal tragedy or loss of income, so it’s important to proceed with a balance of sensitivity and enthusiasm.”
August 2020 Get Your Business Noticed
GO ABOVE AND BEYOND
If you’re trying to make a good impression on your return, Vonnie agrees it’s important to demonstrate your willingness to go above and beyond – just be genuine about it. “It can’t be for the sake of it, nor to the detriment of your health and well-being,” she warns. “Going above and beyond doesn’t have to mean more hours. It could just mean working smarter, being more proactive, anticipating needs and overcoming obstacles. As we continue to work from home, and start working in more of a hybrid way, we need to continue to check that the boundaries of work and life are not being overstepped.”
HAVE CONFIDENCE
While it can feel like an uncertain time at work – even if your employer has taken you off furlough – it’s important to remember they haven’t made you redundant for a reason. “It’s because the business needs you and your skills,” says Vonnie. “Try to return with confidence in your abilities and the contributions you make. You might be very grateful to have a role when so many others are losing jobs and facing the prospect of long-term unemployment, but that’s no reason to lose sight of what is reasonable and sensible.”light, for example – that will light the room at darker times of day when the household are milling about. Wall lights and table lamps will give a softer glow when it’s time to relax. An adjustable reading lamp next to a comfy chair will allow readers to focus on their book without dazzling the rest of the room. A formal, parlour-style living room demands decorative lighting to impress, whether it’s a statement standard lamp or a designer chandelier. You might also consider adding accent lighting, such as a picture light to draw attention to a favourite work of art. It’s a good idea to have at least two electrical circuits for your living room lighting – one for the main light, and one for softer lighting – as well as dimmer switches so you can control the level of light to suit the time of day, task and mood.

Health & Beauty
Rebekah’s
Beauty Box “What does ‘the new normal’ mean in terms of the beauty industry?” Life is so different now, and at the time of writing East Yorkshire is by no means back to normal, whatever that may mean to you.… The ‘new normal’ is a phrase we’re already sick of, but what does it mean for the beauty industry? In the time of a pandemic, I wouldn’t dream of suggesting that makeup and skincare concerns would be top of your priorities, but it can be a means of self-care and self-esteem boosting. That doesn’t have to mean spending lots of money, though – in fact, with the help of a few hacks and a bit of creativity, there’s plenty you can do at home that costs little to nothing and promotes a zerowaste ethos. Win-win! Brows gone wild? Grab a spoolie, spray with hairspray and brush up through the hairs to control and set. And for an Instagram-worthy ‘laminated’ look, use a normal bar
of soap, wet your spoolie, rub it on the soap and brush up through the hairs for a fluffy and full look – this sounds mad, but is an old-school trick that’s really effective. For colour, grab an eyeshadow, colour match and use a small brush to sweep the powder through brows in tiny stroke actions to fill in sparse areas. Mix with a little balm for a thicker pomade, and be sure to pick a non-shimmer shade! So many lipstick containers are filled much further than you can usually reach – if yours is worn out, use a spatula or tiny brush to make sure you get every scrap, and if you want a more natural look, simply mix some of your favourite shades with a little Vaseline or balm for a sheer slick of colour. And for multitasking magic, lipstick can look amazing on cheeks; for a natural flush, pat a little colour on to the apples of your cheeks using fingertips. A warm coral will look fab on dark skin tones, and a dusty pink on lighter.
August 2020 Get Your Business Noticed
If you’re missing your lash extensions, give an eyelash curler a quick blast with your hairdryer to heat, check the temperature on your wrist to make sure the metal isn’t too hot, then apply to your lashes for super curls. Another trick for lash volume is to apply mascara, then use a cotton bud or spoolie to apply a coat of baby powder, then another layer of mascara – repeat for desired effect. And if your mascara is going a little dry and clumpy, add a couple of drops of saline solution and give it a shake to thin out. If you have not yet managed to bag an appointment with your hairdresser and roots are a concern, take an eyeshadow the same shade as your hair and brush through the roots. This works best on mid-todark hair. Set with hairspray to stop transference. For coloured hair, it’s well worth investing in colourdepositing or correct-care shampoo to prolong the life and vibrancy of
your colour in between salon visits. I love Osmo’s range of colour revivers, and use Radiant Red (£10.49, sallybeauty.co.uk) for three minutes on wet hair, before washing out for super-bright results that last a week or two. Blondes, vanish brassiness with Bleach London Silver Shampoo (£7.50, cultbeauty.co.uk) every other wash.
THE ONE THAT I WANT
Who remembers the strip lash? Of course you do, but since lash extensions have become the norm for so many, they might be something you haven’t used in a while. I’m loving the House of Lashes Iconic strip lashes - pictured above (£14, beautybay.com) for a cruelty free flutter. Always do your homework, and don’t buy mink lashes when the alternatives are so pretty and don’t harm animals.

Hull Leisure Centres Are Now Open
Woodford Leisure Centre, Ennerdale Leisure Centre and Costello Stadium are now reopen to the public in time for the Summer Holidays.
Facilities including gyms, pools, fitness classes and racquet sports are now accessible via a pre-booking service. The outdoor cycle circuit at Ennerdale, track and field activities at Costello Stadium and golf at Sutton Park Golf Course are also open to the public. Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “We know how much residents have missed our leisure centres so I’m delighted we are now able to open for them. “Our teams have been working hard behind the scenes to make the centres safe for all users and the new pre-booking service for all activities has been an essential part of that. “We understand things may look a little different and appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding whilst we adjust to these changes.” Due to the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines, visitors are asked to arrive ready for the activity they have booked, including wearing swimwear under clothing, socially distanced queueing systems, regular use of hand sanitising systems across the building and pre-booking slots for gym, classes and pool.
Gym and fitness class visitors will be required to bring their own water bottles and to use blue roll provided for cleaning equipment instead of their own towels. Changing facilities will not be available for use, as they will be reserved for swimmers only. Swimmers will be able to pre-book hourly sessions and lifeguards will be on hand to assist visitors with the safe use of the pool. Family bookings will be allocated an area of the pool. Pay-as-you-go customers will need to set up an online pay-as you-go membership to enable them to pre-book sessions. Regular members can book sessions up to 48 hours in advance and pay-asyou-go members up to 24 hours in advance. Some of the changes customers our members will experience

Roy Woodcock’s
World of Wine We’re off on our travels this month, having noticed that alongside a growth in English wine we are also seeing more bottles from less obvious locations around the world; Romania and Uruguay being just two examples. I have to say these are not countries I have ever given much thought to when it comes to wine and probably one would have to admit that in reality, our horizons are quite narrow and don’t stretch too far beyond what we think of as traditional wine producers. These thoughts were prompted by discovering that in terms of the big supermarkets, the Co-op’s first-ever wines from Romania and Uruguay have recently landed in stores. What are they like? Well, the new Romanian Pinot Noir is a brilliant budget-friendly red at £5.50 a bottle, whilst the Uruguayan Finca Traversa Tannat Merlot (£8) is the perfect full-bodied red for South American wine lovers with its blend of Merlot and the indigenous Tannat grape. Sarah Benson, Co-op wine buyer, told us: “Eastern European wines continue to offer exceptional value and quality, whilst this new Uruguayan wine will expand our South American wine range beyond Chile and Argentina.” Uruguay is the fourth largest producer of wine in South America - Argentina is the largest, followed closely by Chile and then Brazil. It
is best known for red wines using Tannat grapes, historically linked to Basque-influenced regions of France near the Pyrenees. It is the most widely-planted grape in that country, so much so that it is regarded as Uruguay’s native variety, even though it was introduced by Basque settlers in the 19th century. It’s notable for its very high tannin levels so is generally blended with other red grape varieties to soften the astringency and make it more approachable. The Uruguayan Finca Traversa Tannat Merlot is produced in the capital Montevideo by the Finca Traversa family winery and is a full-bodied red blend of Merlot and Tannat and makes an excellent alternative to California and Australian offerings. Try it with steak - it works a treat. The winery prides itself on the sustainable nature of its business and wines are produced utilising solar panels and increasing the use of composting in place of inorganic fertilisers. Proximity to the Atlantic Ocean provides cool breezes and a maritime climate that help to keep alcohol levels lower and develop bright, fruit driven wines with great character and complexity. Simply named Romanian Pinot Noir, the other new one at the Co-op offers an accessible option for fans of quality Pinot. With a wine history that dates back over 6,000 years, Romania is, perhaps surprisingly, the sixth
largest producer of wine in Europe. The producer of this example is located in the Banat region in the South West of the country, creating wines that perfectly express the traditions and terroir of the region. As Romania’s largest exporter of wine, the winery use innovative approaches to produce modern, fruit-driven wines that over deliver on taste and quality at highlycompetitive prices. This light-bodied red displays the classic characteristics of the iconic grape variety. With full flavours of cherry, plum and raspberry and a smooth velvety finish, it really does pack a punch. Try it slightly chilled, or with a cheese salad, cold meat platter or white fish such as cod. Romania has at least as much potential as any other Eastern European wine-producing country, but has received a fraction of the foreign investment of, say, Hungary. Meanwhile, the New World continues to embrace new grape varieties, with South Africa having its first commercial crop of Marselan harvested recently while Argentina plants Assyrtiko. Assyrtiko is the white grape variety grown on the windy Greek Island of Santorini. Here the wind dries the grapes, creating concentrated citrus and stone fruit wines with high acidity. In Argentina, producer Trapiche has planted Assyrtiko on the volcanic soils 200km south of Buenos Aires, one of the few vineyards in Argentina not at altitude. In South Africa, Marselan was planted in Paarl, one of the warmer areas in the Western Cape where altitude is used to help keep the region cool. Marselan is a red grape variety created in 1961 by crossing Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. The vine is grown mostly in the Languedoc wine region with some plantings in the Northern Coast
of California. It has also become very popular in China. Marselan (pictured above) tends to produce large clusters of small berries that are mid-late ripening. It also has strong disease resistance. The message is, I think, don’t be afraid to experiment and try something new. You might be surprised. And we may have to, as more popular, traditional, wineproducing countries experience difficulties. The bushfires that ravaged Australia over the Christmas period, for example, are expected to cause a four per cent drop in production this year, according to Wine Australia. The regions closest to harvest are the ones most likely to have significant damage, including Hunter Valley and Canberra. Canberra is not as famous as Hunter Valley, whose Semillon is one of the earliest harvested grapes in the country which make it one of the most affected regions. Wine Australia claims that South Australia’s Adelaide Hills, which also suffered significant bush fires, may have escaped the worst effects because the cool season had delayed harvest time. And finally, we’ve also learned that Germany will not produce any ice wine for the first time for the 2019/2020 vintage after warm weather failed to freeze grapes on the vine.

Baked aubergine with spiced lamb, mint & pomegranate Serves 2
Aubergines are great vessels for stuffing. We’ve given the lamb a Middle Eastern style spicing and have served it sprinkled with almonds, mint and pomegranate, though you can leave out the pomegranate if you can’t find any. Good with couscous, a leafy side salad or wilted spinach. Ingredients 1 large aubergine sunflower oil/light olive oil, for frying and roasting 25g flaked almonds 1 onion, finely diced 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped or crushed 300g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried mint ¼ tsp smoked paprika ¼ tsp chilli flakes 4 large tomatoes, skinned & chopped 1 pomegranate handful of mint leaves, shredded salt and black pepper Method Heat the oven to 220˚C/Gas 7. Cut the aubergine in half lengthways. Score the flesh in a criss-cross pattern. Drizzle liberally with oil and season with salt and pepper. Place skin-side up in a baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until the flesh is soft and tender right the way through. Meanwhile, put the almonds in a dry frying pan. Heat gently, stirring, until golden. Remove to a
plate and keep to one side. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and fry on a low heat, stirring, for 10 minutes. Add the lamb and fry, stirring, on a medium heat to brown. Add the garlic, cumin coriander, dried mint, smoked paprika and chilli flakes and stir for 2 minutes. Add the chopped tomatoes. Season and simmer for 30 minutes, adding a splash of water if needed to stop the meat drying out. Cut the pomegranate in half crossways. Take a rolling pin or the handle of a wooden spoon. Hold the pomegranate cut-side down in your hand over a bowl and bash the skin; the seeds will fall out (most of them anyway). Pick out any pith that does fall in; there shouldn’t be much with this technique, but it tastes bitter, so remove any you find.
Choose food as it should be.
Once the aubergine flesh is tender, remove it from the oven. Carefully scoop out as much of the flesh as you can, keeping the aubergine skins intact. Add the flesh to the lamb. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes. Check the seasoning. Spoon the lamb mixture into the aubergine skins. Sprinkle over the almonds, pomegranate seeds and mint to serve. www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Sue specialises in advising and representing women who have been subjected to domestic abuse and also those involved in private children law proceedings. Amy is experienced in all family law matters and is available to provide advice and assistance. Our administrative assistant Kirstie provides support to the whole team whilst also being the first point of contact and welcoming new clients. Similarly for those who work during the day we can offer appointments to fit around their working hours. We can provide advice, correspond with the other party or their representative, prepare and submit court applications and represent women at Court. The majority of Court hearings are currently taking place remotely by way of telephone conference calls or Skype. When such hearings occur both the parties and their representatives will be joined to the hearing so that all can take part as they would in a direct face to face court hearing.

Travel
Where we are at … MARION Travel is still in turmoil, although for the
past 5 months we have not had any business the future looks good as clients start to travel. Where are people going? I have to say we have not encouraged our clients to depart prior to September Jersey and have a number of regular clients we have recommended not to book yet but leave their details with us until we are more certain that the areas they are looking to travel to will be open for visitors. For example, looking to book flights to South Africa this winter. Travel corridors are continually changing, if you follow our facebook page I am posting updates as and when I can. September, we see our first coach tour departing to the Scottish Borders. Everywhere we are due to visit, hotel, abbeys, gardens, tea rooms etc are all ready to receive us with new protocol in place. Our coach will be vapor sanitised every evening, whilst guests will have Scottish Borders. temperatures taken plus we will be travelling with lower number of guests on a full size coach. Jersey is also a popular destination although our clients are flying from Manchester due to the nearer airports pulling their flight schedules. 2021 we will welcome back a flying programme from Humberside as normal every Saturday May to September. Each Thursday I host a virtual coffee morning. This week we enjoyed talking to Tony from Typically Holidays who has just returned from Italy. He had an amazing experience as there were no crowds. He enjoyed a Pisa carefree journey from Venice to Viareggio travelling from city to city via train, he ate well and took wonderful photos. Sadly we saw the demise of Cruise & Maritime mid July which now leaves us without any cruises departing from Hull. You can imagine I am in the process of sorting out many claims for refunds from ABTA. Price wise in comparison there is not too much to offer with other cruise lines. We are working with cruise lines to give those booked with Cruise & Maritime a discount on booking a new cruise and no deposit for 12 weeks. Our nearest ports to jump on a cruise are now Liverpool & Newcastle. Regent Seven Seas have exciting selection of Mediterranean fly cruises for summer 2021. All inclusive luxury from just £3499 plus $1000 suite credit. Call for details or visit our website. We are now seeing new bookings coming in for 2021 at a normal pace. I think everyone just needs something nice to look forward to. Many tour operators & cruise lines are offering a flexi date change should you change your mind as time goes along. When you are ready to start planning we are here to guide you all the way. There are so many options available to travel around our wonderful world. We book all tour operators & Cruise lines and we look forward to the opportunity of sending you away and creating wonderful memories once again to last a lifetime. Best wishes

We pick five new books to read in August
Whether you’re spending a week in the garden, or are making it further afield, you’ll want a good book to accompany you. Thankfully, August is serving up a large selection of fascinating fiction and memoirs…. Betty by Tiffany McDaniel
Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit in the rural town of Breathed, Ohio, is one of poverty and violence – both from outside the family and within. The landscape becomes a kind of refuge for Betty, but when her family’s darkest secrets are brought to light, she has no choice but to reckon with the brutal history hiding in the hills, as well as the cruelties and incredible characters she encounters. Despite the hardships she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her love for her sisters and her father’s brilliant stories fire her own imagination, and in the face of everything she witnesses, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write. She recounts the horrors of her family’s past and present with pen and paper and buries them in the dirt – moments that have stung her so deeply she could not tell them, until now. “Tiffany McDaniel has given us a vivid and haunting portrait of the writer as a young girl. Betty Carpenter survives the brutality of her childhood through her father’s stories and his steadfast belief in her own. A novel of tragedy and trouble, poetry and power, not a
story you will soon forget.” – Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
Olive by Emma Gannon
Olive is the first novel from Ctrl Alt Delete and The Multi-Hyphen Method’s Emma Gannon. Olive the protagonist is many things: independent, adrift, anxious, loyal and kind. She knows her own mind – and that it’s okay she’s still figuring it all out, navigating her world without a compass. But life comes with expectations, there are choices to be made and – sometimes – stereotypes to fulfil. So, when her best friends’ lives branch away towards marriage and motherhood, leaving the path they’ve always followed together, she starts to question her choices – because life according to Olive looks a little bit different. Told with great warmth and nostalgia, this is a modern tale about the obstacle course of adulthood, milestone decisions and the ‘taboo’ about choosing not to have children. “It’ll give a voice to countless women.” – Marian Keyes, author of Rachel’s Holiday
Coming Undone by Terri White
To everyone else, journalist Terri White appeared to be living the dream, named one of Folio’s Top Women in US Media and accruing further awards for the magazines she was editing. In reality, she was rapidly skidding towards a mental health crisis
August 2020 Get Your Business Noticed
that would land her in a locked psychiatric ward as her past caught up with her. As well as growing up in a household in poverty, Terri endured sexual and physical abuse at the hands of a number of her mother’s partners. Her success defied all expectations, but the greater the disparity between her outer achievements and inner demons, the more she struggled to hold everything together. Coming Undone is Terri’s documentation of her unravelling, and her precarious navigation back from a life in pieces. A striking read. “Life-changing.” – Emma Jane Unsworth, author of Animals
The Disaster Tourist by Yun Ko-Eun
Yona has been stuck behind a desk for years working as a programming coordinator for Jungle, a travel company specialising in package holidays to destinations ravaged by disaster. When a senior colleague touches her inappropriately, she tries to complain, and in an attempt to bury her allegations, the company make her an attractive proposition: a free ticket for one of their most sought-after trips, to the desert island of Mui. She accepts the offer and travels to the remote island, where the major attraction is a supposedly dramatic sinkhole. When the customers who’ve paid a premium for the trip begin to get frustrated, Yona realises that the company has dangerous plans to fabricate an environmental catastrophe to make the trip more interesting, but when she tries to raise the alarm, she discovers she has put her own life in danger. “This is an entertaining eco-thriller that sets out to illuminate the way climate change is inextricably bound
up with the pressures of global capitalism.” – The Guardian
The Hungover Games by Sophie Heawood
Journalist Sophie Heawood’s specialist subject was celebrities, and her own relationships made their marriages look eternal. But her own life in LA was happy; free of care and consequence. That was, until she came down to earth – with a bump. The Hungover Games is the story of how she staggered from partying in Hollywood to bringing up a baby in Dalston. It’s about what happens when Mr. Right isn’t around so you have a baby with Mr. Wrong, a touring musician who tells you halfway through your pregnancy that he’s met someone else, just after you’ve given up your LA life and moved back to England to attempt some kind of modern family life with him. And it’s about how to invent the concept of the two-person family when you grew up in a traditional nuclear unit of four, and your kid’s friends all have happily married parents too. Unflinchingly honest, emotionally raw, and surprisingly sweet, this memoir explores what happens if you’ve been looking for love your whole life and finally find it where you least expect it. “Beautiful, wild, painfully honest, hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking.” – Dolly Alderton, author of Everything I Know About Loves

Motoring
Jeep Wrangler 2020
A car that dares to be different - that’s the latest Jeep Wrangler. Roy Woodcock is a confirmed fan . . . Motoring journalists get to drive so many different cars, there’s a danger of getting blasé about it all. But every now and again there’s one that really strikes a chord. One that I would really like to keep. One such is the latest Jeep Wrangler. I accept it might not be everyone’s cup of tea . . . too macho, too rugged, too quirky, maybe. In fact, conventional wisdom suggests an SUV shouldn’t look anything like this. But I loved every single thing about it because as well as being an ex-traordinary performer, it had real character. There are the big things for a start, that make it stand out. Like the roof - what other serious off-roader offers you al fresco motoring wherever it is you want to go? Well, the fact is there isn’t another full open-air 4x4 SUV on the market. And there are three roof options with the Wrangler: The Sky One-Touch powertop allows occupants to retract the full-length open canvas roof with a push of a button and you can also choose
the improved Zipper-less Premium Sunrider soft top, which has been improved by adding two additional bows to manage the fabric. This new design helps to quieten wind noise and allows for easier access to partial and full open top positions. The creme de la creme, in my opinion, is the Freedom Top, as fitted to my test car. This is a hard top with three panels that can taken off and stowed quite easily. Quite magic! There are other touches like that that set this car apart. I can’t think of any other, for instance, that lets you fold the windscreen down flat. Or take any of the four doors off. So okay, I’ll concede there’s few who would want to do that. And lots of you who would ask “what’s the point?” But it’s what sets the Jeep Wrangler apart; makes you realise that you are the proud owner of a car that is truly original and can be enjoyed just as much for what it is and looks like than for what it does. But make no mistake, it does do a lot too. It can tackle some seriously
rough terrain, even with just road tyres fitted and on previous occasions have been able to put that to the test on steep and rocky routes on the North York Moors. On road, you’ll enjoy the high riding position that it shares with other SUVs and you’ll also enjoy some comforting luxury. There’s plenty of soft-touch surfaces, for instance; more than you would probably expect on something that built its reputation on being utilitarian. There are three trim levels, starting with the Wrangler Safari from £44,920 on the road and progressing through the Overland to the Rubicon, which takes its offroad capability to the nth de-gree. All are available as either two or four-door models and either a two-litre petrol engine or 2.2 diesel, as fitted here. There’s both manual and automatic versions and the Wrangler’s four-wheel drive system has also been refined with the choice of modes decided via a second gear-lever.
The Wrangler’s suspension system seems to have improved since I last drove one, certainly in terms of onroad comfort and those luxurious touches I mentioned included climate control, heather leather seats, LED lighting all round, satnav, an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, parking sensors and one of the clearest/best reversing camera systems I’ve experienced. It offers a host of clever storage solutions, durable mesh pockets that extend the entire length of the doors, cup holders and numerous phone storage areas. The glove box is now damped and like the centre console, can be locked to safely secure valuables when the top is down. An un-der-floor storage area behind the rear seat provides room to secure small items out of sight.
There’s two wheel-drive, high range, the setting you use when on-road; four wheel-drive auto; four wheel-drive part time and – for serious mud plugging – four wheel-drive low range. Switching is a doddle.

Motoring
The Wrangler’s tailgate opens in two parts. The lower part is sidehinged and opens like a regular door, while the upper section (the window) opens upwards, although this can vary depending on the roof you go for. In practice, the Wrangler drove really well on the tarmac; the diesel engine proved smooth, re-fined and quiet and the eightspeed automatic gearbox worked effortlessly. It won’t set any pulses racing in terms of straight-line speed, but then I can’t imagine anyone expecting that. Nor will fuel economy, around the mid-30s mpg, overly impress.
Emissions are also high - from 195 to 213 g/km of CO2. But my main niggle, and it was only that, concerned the driving position there didn’t seem enough space to rest your left leg while driving which did become an issue at times. But not enough to really put me off. Definitely one car I was sorry to stop driving. * Jeep Wrangler: From £44,920 to £48,405 on the road. More information from www.jeep.co.uk

Vegetable seeds to sow from late August onwards
Late August/Early September is a good time to sow veg seeds for winter and spring, including leafy crops, autumn onions and broad beans. August/September is the gardeners harvest time, but it’s also time to plan ahead and start sowing the vegetables that will provide valuable winter harvests and earlier spring and summer pickings.
You might be thinking about having a holiday this month, but August isn’t the time to take your eye off the ball in the garden. Here are some of the main jobs: Top up ponds and bird baths regularly. Water fruit and veg plants daily. Prune all summer flowering shrubs once the blooms are finished.
In autumn the soil is still warm, so seeds will germinate quickly. If the weather is still fine, the growing season can continue for several weeks. Here is our list of vegetables you can sow in late August and early September: Leafy veg Spring cabbages and spinach can be sown now for pickings next spring. You will need to cover the spinach with fleece from October onwards. Salad crops There’s still time to sow salad crops to harvest in the coming weeks. Sow in a sheltered spot outdoors, or grow in pots. Try mustard leaf, winter salad mixes, mizuna or

mibuna. Winter lettuces such as ‘Winter Density’ can be sown under glass. Broad beans and peas Sowing broad beans in autumn means plants can establish over winter and crop earlier next spring. Broad beans and peas are hardy, but it’s advisable to cover plants with fleece during hard frosts or snow. Try broad bean ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ or pea ‘Feltham First’.
do best in cool, moist conditions. Harvest as golf-ball sized, baby veg in around six weeks. Perfect for the Christmas table.
Water camellias and rhododendrons thoroughly this month to make sure that next year’s buds develop well. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight. Stake tall or top-heavy dahlias and lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Dead-head bedding plants and perennials to encourage them to flower into the autumn and stop them self-seeding.
Radish Radishes mature in just a couple of weeks, so it’s worth sowing a late batch of seeds now, for a late crop.
Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy.
Turnip Turnips are another fast-growing crop that can be sown on bare soil in September – they

Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year.
Onions, shallots and garlic Planting onion sets in autumn means you will get an earlier crop next year. Choose a variety that’s ideal for autumn sowing, such as ‘Troy’ or ‘Radar’. Garlic can be sown any time between now and spring.
Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost. Trim any lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact..

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. Staying Positive
Let’s face it, we’ve completely lost any sense of normality - and many are feeling anxious for all sorts of reasons. But we’ve got to stay positive and find things that help keep our spirits up. As many of you know, I really enjoy baking. I’m not great at it, but I can do certain things quite well and I am striving to add to my list of recipes (courtesy of Mary Berry usually!) to keep my children supplied with home-baked treats! I also love going out for my daily dog walks, which is why we’ve looked up all the dog friendly beaches in East Yorkshire and set ourselves a challenge to visit different ones over the summer holidays to see which ones we like best! Of course, that also includes checking out all the local fish and chip shops on the coast! Being outside in the fresh air always makes me feel better. What about you? What things make you happy and what challenge can you set yourself?
Going Back To School
We’re all wondering what our schools are going to look like in September, with class or year group bubbles in place and staggered start/finish and break times. Most children won’t have been in the classroom for 6 months - so it’s inevitably going to quite difficult for many of them. A local business, though, which champions the mental health and wellbeing of young people, has devised 8 beautifully illustrated short stories alongside Hull author Garry Burnett which are brilliant and perfect for parents to read with their children to help them go back to school with confidence. The books, from Inspire Ignite, feature fun characters Positive Parrot and Negative Newt - and can be bought via their website - inspireignite.co.uk. Really worth checking them out.
Easy Summer Dessert
Who doesn’t love ice-cream? I found this recipe for Fruit Ice-cream in the Good Housekeeping online magazine and thought I’d share it with you. I’m going to give it a try because it looks really easy!! Put 2 lbs of your chosen fruit in a food processor, pulse until finely chopped and fluffy. Add ½ can of sweetened condensed milk, a tablespoon of honey and ½ teaspoon kosher salt. Pulse again until smooth. Put it in a 5 x 9 inch loaf tin, then freeze, uncovered, for about 4 hours - and serve! Ta da! And finally........I do hope you enjoy your summer holidays - but remember to continue social distancing, wash your hands and keep a facemask in your handbag and/or glove compartment so you’re never caught short! Stay safe and stay positive!

No risk professional installation AS FEATURED ON TV
Despite many coats of preservative, the structure of the wooden fence in our front garden rotted, and a recent storm sent it off down the road, thankfully missing the neighbour’s car. However, every cloud has a silver lining, and we couldn’t be more pleased with our new ColourFence. It looks great, and we are looking forward to years of summers with no fence paint or algae treatments.
