Defib’ Champion

This month I celebrated becoming a Defibrillator Champion with the Oliver King Foundation, which promotes the availability of lifesaving defibrillators in our schools. Every single year in the UK, 30,000 people suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. Sadly, fewer than one in ten survive. The Oliver King Foundation was set up following the tragic death of 12-year-old Oliver King from a sudden cardiac arrest, which kills twelve young people every single week. Oliver was winning a swimming race at school. Early access to a defibrillator is vital. For every minute that passes, chances of survival drop by 10%. At the event in Parliament (pictured) it was interesting to hear about how many lives have been saved by defibrillation, including a caretaker at a school who had only received treatment by a defibrillator only two weeks earlier. I am proud to have become a Defibrillator Champion for Beverley and Holderness. This is an

issue I care about deeply and it is vital that we take action to prevent any loss of life where one can be saved. Following on from my autumn 2014 cycle tour of the constituency to raise awareness of where defibrillators are located, on Friday 18 November I will be visiting two new ones outside the Minstergate Surgery in Beverley and at Woodmansey Primary School. If you’re interested in learning more about how to get a defibrillator for your neighbourhood I have produced a “How To” guide which is available at http://www.grahamstuart.com/wp-content/ uploads/2009/07/How-to-get-a-CommunityAccess-Defibrillator-in-your-village2.pdf – or get in touch with my office on 020 7219 4340. We’d be delighted to hear from you. Graham Stuart is the MP for Beverley and Holderness

A New Year - A New Home! Whilst in the office I heard ‘a New Year – a New Home! I notice you have homes for sale and I want to buy for the first time. What do I do?’

If you want to be in your new home by new year, there are several different steps. Firstly, what do you want? What are your requirements including location and other factors e.g. garden, parking, size etc? I remember watching the programme Location, Location, Location and thinking an ideal house but wrong location. Once you have considered what you want, there is the matter of price, how much can I borrow and can I afford it? To get ahead you need to know how much you can afford and how you intend buying your home? By securing ‘a decision in principle’ should mean when making your offer the estate agent can inform the seller that you are a serious buyer. This therefore supports your offer. There are several mortgage advisors, who for a fee, will provide advice, whilst some will supply these services for free for limited time however Martin & Co offer a service which is free full stop. This can save you money to use towards your legal costs. After you considered your location, what you want

6

and price, you can start the hunt!!! To some people this involves using the Rightmove. However, developing a good relationship with a local estate agent is another way forward. A good local agent will take your details and actively match your requirements to existing properties. If nothing is currently matching a good estate agent will keep your details and when a possible property becomes available will contact, you with the news. Whilst viewing properties you need to weigh up the pro and cons which can be difficult. However, if before you started you know what you want and price ranges this process should be easier. When making an offer with a decision in principle you are in a stronger positon. Once your offer is accepted the selection of solicitors can appear to be difficult. Where possible get free conveyancing quotations to base your decision upon a good estate agent will offer this service for free. I would like to say that after that everything should run smoothly and you can relax, which unfortunately is not always the case. The relationship you built with your local agent should now provide the reward of ‘sales progression’ as all involved in the chain are working to the common goal of a New Year – New Home. Until next month take care.

Local News

Hull & East Riding Mumbler News The weather has well and truly turned so this month we have started visiting a lot more of the indoor attractions we have locally! We still like getting our wellies and waterproofs on and going out for walks and to explore, and puddle jumping on the way back from school has become a regular activity, but I feel lucky that we have so many indoor places to visit in and around Hull/Beverley. Soft play centres are always a good idea at this time of the year, we have a staggering 13 different ones in our area! You can find the full list on Mumbler’s Days Out Section, pick Soft Play Centres from the menu on the left. Many of them often run special events, such as ‘Breakfast with Spiderman’ and ‘Meet Peppa’, so check with your local one what extra things they have.

8

We’re also lucky to have so many really good museums locally, most of which are free! Again they’re all listed on Mumbler’s Days Out section. You can spend a

full day in Hull doing the main museums and not spend a penny. We like Streetlife, Hull & East Riding Museum and Maritime Museum. Streetlife now do a regular toddler group at the museum, plus they have lots of special events coming up for all ages so check what they have on and when. Don’t forget the Deep! I often forget we have this right on our doorstep and it’s a great wet weather activity. They also now run a regular toddler group from the attraction and have special events on during all school holidays to vary your visits (once you’ve been and paid once its free to go for the next 12 months). The ‘Hull & East Riding Mumbler’ is a website that lists everything from weekly playgroups and classes to local days out ideas and family events in our area. Check it all out at www.hullandeastridingmumbler.com and please get in touch with me via the contact form on it if you would like something including. You can follow me on facebook too and Twitter @ Hull_ER_Mumbler. Have a great November! .

Minding The Minster

The Advent Procession Behind the scenes at Beverley Minster plans are getting underway for one of the year’s most memorable services: The Advent Procession. Hundreds of people attend this dramatic service, which begins with the Minster in total darkness, and slowly, accompanied by music and readings, becomes lighter and brighter. The season of Advent (what? can it be that time again already?!) before Christmas, just as in Lent before Easter, is a special season of preparation and expectation, as we look forward to the birth of the Christ-child. The Advent Procession service uses movement from darkness to light to symbollise the coming of Jesus, bringing all of humanity out of the shadows and into the brightness of His promise for us. Involved in making this symbollic service take place will be about eight differet types of candles (numbering into the hundreds

when lit, making the Minster truly magical), and taking centre stage will be the combined Minster choirs who will present anthems and hymns as they process through the building with candles. What you won’t see, but please don’t forget, are all the volunteers who have spent patient hours planning and organising the service, running rehearsals, offering advice, choosing the readings; the skilled people who adjust the lighting at just the precise moments to help create the special atmosphere; and the organist who will be high above the organ screen filling the building with music. Please do come along to this most memorable of services on Sunday 27th November at 6.30pm and be part of a very traditional beginning to a season filled with hope and wonder. A 10-minute walk after a Onwards and upwards meal ‘good for diabetes’ for Hedon Insurance “Short stroll after meals better for blood sugar than walks at other times,” says The Daily Telegraph.

The story is based on a study which aimed to see whether taking a 10-minute walk after a main meal resulted in lower blood glucose levels than a single 30-minute walk each day for people with type 2 diabetes. The study, which involved 41 adults, found that taking shorter, more frequent walks immediately after meals reduced blood glucose by around 12% compared with a single 30-minute walk. The greatest benefit was seen after the evening meal when carbohydrate consumption was high and participants tended to be less active. The researchers did not explain why a post-meal walk was more effective at lowering glucose in the blood. However, they believe a short stroll after every meal could reduce the need for insulin injections which can help people better manage their weight.

14

Researchers say current physical activity guidelines should be changed to specifically include post-meal activity, especially after meals with lots of carbohydrate, such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. There are 4 million people living with diabetes in the UK and 90% of those have type 2 diabetes, according to Diabetes UK. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin to function properly, or the body’s cells don’t react to insulin. Due to the short duration of this study we can’t be sure that the effect seen in this research would last and lead to an overall improvement in blood glucose levels and diabetes control. However, the findings are interesting and if confirmed by further research, could mean this simple lifestyle change would benefit people with diabetes.

As a result of the local people taking the firm very much to their hearts, leading East Riding Insurance Broker, Hedon Insurance, have moved from their old Hallgate office to much larger premises on King Street. The need for larger premises so early in a location’s development is unprecedented in the company’s 50 years of trading and is, believes the broker’s new manager, Richard Atkin, due to the way that the company markets itself in the area. We have positioned ourselves in the market place as your local insurance broker – and we really are. We are there, where you need us - on the high street – and we are happy for people to just pop in when it suits them to discuss what’s on their mind with regards to their insurance.’ As well as enabling the firm to considerably increase their sales area, the move will also see one their partner firms, the ICF Group (Financial Services) Ltd, taking its own space within the office. The ICF Group is one the region’s leading firms of independent financial advisers and mortgage brokers, and has been trading for almost 20 years. Andrew Walters, a director at both firms, is excited at the prospect of having a one stop money shop on Cottingham’s high street for the first time in many years – possibly ever. ‘As a Cottingham resident, I can see that there is likely to be a demand in the area for high quality investment and mortgage advice as well as the other related services that we offer and I am pleased that we have been able to join forces on this venture’. The new office is now open on King Street.

Otago – Strength and balance exercise for falls prevention The Facts about falls As we get older the facts are that we are more prone to falls. Falls can have a catastrophic affect on individuals. After a fall, an older person has a 50% probability of having their mobility seriously impaired. Falls destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence, with around 1 in 10 older people who fall becoming afraid to leave their homes in case they fall again. Tips for preventing falls in the home Most people may not believe they are at risk of falls in their own home. Rugs around the home can be the highest risk and the most difficult items to persuade

someone to move or part with! However, there are some practical things that can be done to help avoid falls: l using non slip mats or rugs. Better still remove mats/rugs altogether! l cleaning up spillages immediately l think about de-cluttering to make moving around the home easier. This may include furniture that isn’t used any longer. Call it ‘downsizing’! l ensure there are no trailing wires l adequate lighting. Insufficient lighting and poor eyesight increases the risk of falls l wearing well-fitting footwear that are in good condition, especially slippers. Not walking around the house in socks or tights. l keeping feet in good condition. Nail trimming. Seeing a foot health practitioner if required. Exercise This is the best way to maintain mobility. Extensive research by Otago University, New Zealand has identified specific strength and balance exercises to help keep older people on their feet. Flu Awareness With the winter nights drawing in, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s associate director of public health is urging people who are eligible for a free flu vaccination to take up the offer. With the winter nights drawing in, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s associate director of public health is urging people who are eligible for the free flu vaccination to take up the offer. Mike McDermott, said: “The more people who are vaccinated, the lower the likelihood and spread of infection, reducing pressure on the NHS and Social Care during winter months.” Free flu jabs are available for people aged 65 and over, people with a long-term health condition, pregnant women, children aged from two to four years, people in long-stay residential care homes, and carers. Children in school years 1, 2 and 3 are also offered flu vaccinations, within a part of a school-based programme, as a nasal spray. The flu jab is available free from GP surgeries and pharmacies for people in the at-risk groups. Flu occurs every year, usually in the winter, which is why it’s sometimes called seasonal flu. It’s a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very quickly. Colds are much less serious and usually start gradually with a stuffy or runny nose and a sore throat. A bad bout of flu can be much worse than a heavy cold.

r

You can prevent the spread of the virus by covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and you can wash your hands frequently or use hand gels to reduce the risk of picking up the virus. Mike added: “The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having the vaccination before the flu season starts. “Don’t be put off getting the flu vaccination. If you are eligible get it now, it’s free because you need it. “If you have a long-term health condition, even one that is well managed, or are pregnant, you are at greater risk of severe complications if you catch flu. The nasal spray vaccination is a quick, painless and effective way for children aged two to four, and school years 1 to 3, to be protected from flu without the need for injections.” Details of flu clinic times are available from individual GP practices. For more information about who should have a flu jab, visit www.nhs.uk or visit the direct page at http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/ flu-influenza-vaccine.aspx

When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they spread the flu virus in tiny droplets of saliva over a wide area. These droplets can then be breathed in by other people or they can be picked up by touching surfaces where the droplets have landed.

The most common symptoms of flu are fever, chills, headache, aches and pains in the joints and muscles, and extreme tiredness. Healthy individuals usually recover within two to seven days.

Mike continued: “Flu is dangerous, highly contagious and largely preventable. “For most people who catch flu it is unpleasant, but for some it can lead to chest infections, severe complications and even death.”

The laser facial works cumulatively, you should expect to see a decrease in sun damage and wrinkles resulting in smoother more even skin. Typically, most people experience a mild, sun-burn-like sensation, sometimes accompanied by mild swelling and typically lasting two to 24 hours. Treatments are spaced 3 - 4 weeks apart in order to give your body enough time to see the visible affects. For full effects between 3 to 6 treatments are recommended.

Thread Vein removal What is it?

A laser treatment that can diminish the appearance of leg veins without the pain of surgical treatments and lengthy downtime.

How does it work?

Laser light constricts the blood vessels in the legs that cause spider veins without harming surrounding tissue

What should I expect after a treatment?

Normally an immediate improvement, however this varies between individuals. Typically, most people experience a mild, sun-burn-like sensation, sometimes accompanied by mild swelling and typically lasting two to 24 hours. There is no downtime. Treatments are spaced one month apart, 1-3+ treatments are usually required to fully clear bold vessels and reduce the appearance completely

Younger looking skin with • NO RISK • NO NEEDLES • NO DOWNTIME

Treatments are pay as you go, decreasing in price with each treatment. No commitment. You come, you try, you decide. We are friendly and flexible. We look forward to seeing you.

GLENN TILBROOK plays LEEDS – Brudenell on Tuesday 6th December!

Don’t be fooled by the title of Glenn Tilbrook’s most recent solo album, Happy Ending, or at least not all of it. He’s happy, of course, and why wouldn’t he be? He’s more than earned his place at pop’s top table as one of our most cherished singers, guitarists and songwriters, not to mention an in-demand and endlessly endearing live performer. But more than 40 years after he first answered an ad placed by Chris Difford looking for like-minded sorts to form the band that became the much-loved evergreen Squeeze, an ending is nowhere in sight. Such is the continuing work ethic of a fellow who’s never been far from the action since Squeeze made their recording bow with the Packet Of Three EP in 1977. Those humble three tracks led to such enduring pop classics as Take Me I’m Yours, Cool For Cats, Up The Junction, Another Nail In My Heart, Tempted, Labelled With Love, (this could go on for a while...), not to mention landmark albums like Argybargy, East

Side Story and Some Fantastic Place. Squeeze’s demise in 1998 (though not permanent) saw Glenn embark on a solo career that spawned the albums The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook (2001) and Transatlantic Ping-Pong (2004), showcasing an ever-maturing songwriting talent. Arguably, though, Happy Ending is Glenn’s most personal work to date, a series of evocative portraits of time, people and places, that included writing and vocal contributions by his own children Leon and Wesley, in addition to old friends Simon Hanson (Fluffers/reunited Squeeze drummer) and Dennis Greaves (Nine Below Zero, also Glenn’s compatriot in the side project band The Co-operative).

Tickets for the GLENN TILBROOK are available from: Leeds Brudenell Box Office No: 0113 245 5570 or www.brudenellsocialclub.co.uk/whats-on/glenn-tilbrook/ Tickets - £18.00 (advance) Doors – 7.00pm / Starts – 7.30pm

Niagara Falls

...

A natural wonder of the world and what a great destination for a weekend. Flying from Humberside Friday morning you can be in Niagara before 2.30pm! The falls are an amazing sight, not narrow but huge and wide.. The roar is tremendous as the water constantly thunders down. The mist sprays right to the shore and in the heat of the day was a pleasant coolant . The falls form part of the border between Canada and the USA so you can walk across the Rainbow Bridge, providing you have the correct entry documents and view from both angles. The Canadian side has a super promenade backed by parkland giving superb panoramic views of the two major falls ,separated only by an island.

We were blessed with blue skies and wonderful natural rainbows as the sun sparkled down onto the flowing water. You can get up close to the falls by taking a boat ride on the Hornblower, the Maid of the Mist which you may well of heard of departs from the USA. Or even journey behind the falls. For both experiences Ponchos are provided to keep you dryish! For a dry view take a ride up the Skylon Tower, free if you dine in the revolving restaurant. Enjoy an early dinner, it is a real bargain providing you with fabulous views. Niagara is a playground for the Canadians, a little bit like going to the seaside. Stepping back from the promenade you will find bright lights, plenty of restaurants, entertainment, amusements plus a water park. Also there is Outlet shopping on Lundy’s Lane too. There are a number of hotels offering great views of the falls and it is definitely worth paying a little extra. You can view the falls illuminated and on a fireworks night see the spectacle from the comfort of your own room. Niagara is also famous for its wineries, if this is of interest you can enjoy a great day tour of the estates. The sheltered bowl along side Lake Ontario provides perfect growing conditions for grapes and many other fruits too. A flight home on Sunday at 5.30pm will have you back into Humberside Monday morning at 09.25. Why not just incorporate Niagara into a holiday teamed with more places in Canada for a longer experience? We can make lots of suggestions tailoring to your requirements. At Marion Owen Travel we offer a full portfolio of holidays by all modes of transport so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us organise your next life enriching adventure. Marion

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation On Monday 12th September 2016, 24 year old Daniel Wilkinson was doing what he loved, playing football, the former Hull City player was playing for Shaw Lane AFC in a cup tie at Brighouse Town FC when he suddenly collapsed on the field, despite heroic efforts by medical staff from both teams along with paramedics, we were unable to save him. Daniel died from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (AVRC), the same disease that caused former footballer Fabrice Muamba to retire in 2012. ARVC is an inherited condition that causes the replacement of cardiac muscle with fibrous, fatty tissue, normally in the right side of the heart. This causes the walls in the heart chamber to become thin and stretched, impacting how the blood is pumped around the body and causing abnormal heart rhythms (or dangerous cardiac arrhythmias).

34

The condition can be found in one in every 2,000-5,000 adults - if it is looked for. It mainly affects young adults and has been the reason for some sudden unexplained deaths in young athletes. The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise funds that will ultimately safe lives. By donating to this foundation and with the support of the FA and county FA's, every penny raised will go towards providing Screenings for all footballers at grass roots levels and to assist clubs in purchasing Defibrillators and to provide training in CPR. We must ensure that Daniel's death is not in vain and that no more young footballers lose their lives.

A JustGiving page has been set up, which is aiming to raise £50,000, donations can be made here https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/danwilkinsonfoundation.

November Gardener

It’s November and the leaves are falling – what can we expect from the weather! There is always a chance of frost now which could very well bring an end to your summer displays. General

If you didn’t manage to give the outside of the greenhouse a wash down last year, it would prove very worthwhile to try and do it on a warm day during this month removing any algae and grime that has built up preventing light getting to the plants inside. The use of a hosepipe, using a slow spray, and brush washer on each glazed panel would prove ideal for this job. It’s also a good idea to insulate greenhouses by using bubble air insulation film. Retaining warmth in the greenhouse is important so it is best to close vents by mid-afternoon. As temperatures drop houseplants should be watered less frequently. It’s also advisable that plants being over-wintered under-glass are checked regularly to make sure they are keeping healthy and free from disease, which can be done by removing any dead flowers along with leaves that may become discoloured. Clean and disinfect pots and trays ready for next season. Plan your garden for next year, order plants and seeds early to avoid disappointment. As temperatures fall birds will appreciate regular feeding too.

End of an Era Over the last sixteen years the Heritage Landscape Centre, Gibson Lane, Melton has been offering clients a huge range of garden products, including water features, plants, garden ornaments, sheds and summerhouses, fish and pond supplies, etc. and in more recent years the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea or light bite with the addition of the ‘Seasons’ café. However, as from 24th December 2016, the Landscape Centre will close its doors. Owners Ian and Martine Ashbridge said they had truly enjoyed their time at the Landscape & Garden Centre and would like to thank all their customers for their support over the last 16 years. As well as the Landscape Centre they also run a very successful Garden Design and Landscape business. This has always been Ian’s passion and it is this side of the business that they would like to further develop in the New Year. The Landscape Centre doesn’t officially close until December 24th and in that time Ian and Martine hope to see as many of their regular customers as possible.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Christmas Countdown Well, can you believe it? We’re on the final countdown to Christmas. I know I’m getting older when I wonder where the last year has gone! It feels like I’ve blinked and it’s almost the festive season again! I must say though that I ‘m feeling rather proud of myself because I’ve already started my Christmas shopping! I’m certainly not someone who has everything bought and wrapped by the end of October – that’s just being far too organised (although sometimes I’m a bit jealous!) I’m normally the ‘last couple of weeks’ sort of person and while I may have great plans for being much more organised, the weeks usually fly by and I’m in a panic! Not this year though! My plans are coming together and my aim is for a relaxing run up to Christmas. Fingers crossed! I’ll let 38 you know how it works out!!

Why we got rid of our microwave I’m guessing that most of you have a microwave in your kitchen. They are so convenient, great for warming things up and great for quick microwave meals when you’re short of time. Well, so did we until last year when it broke! We didn’t instantly buy another one as we would have done in the past, mainly because we didn’t get around to it. And we just didn’t miss it! What we discovered though was that it was just as quick and easy to warm up milk for hot chocolate in a pan on the hob, reheat leftovers in the oven and do pasta and rice in a pan of boiling water. That’s pretty much all we used it for anyway and I decided I was just being lazy using one. The only thing I still forget to do sometimes is to take something out of the freezer the night before to defrost it, but if I do I just make a different meal. In the end, we decided not to bother getting a new one. We didn’t need it – and, by all accounts, it’s a healthier option because we’re not nuking the goodness out of our food. It also means we have an extra space on our wall where I now have a bookshelf for my baking books! Win, win!
