We have a great new feature in this months edition which is ‘Independent Beverley’ which will focus every month on the small independent traders that are the backbone of Beverley. We are so lucky to have a wide variety of independents in our town - they give us that unique mix of cafés, shops, galleries and stores with tradesmen and service providers that makes Beverley a destination for shoppers and tourists alike. In this day and age it is so easy to shop on-line or just grab everything at the large supermarket or retail parks - but please spare a thought for these shopkeepers that rely on us using them to keep the town alive. failure to support them will result in a high street full of charity shops and coffee chains!

We have a fantastic food section as always with great places to eat out, eat in or if you fancy doing it yourself a selection of mouth watering recipes. Check out our competitions throughout the magazine - you can win tickets to see: UB4o in Hull, The Fast & Furious Live Show in Sheffield, Eggstravaganza in Woinderland with a Chocolate Lunch (sounds divine), and much more. Graham Stuart MP:
Residents’ safety is at the heart of my major campaigns
Whether it’s pressing the Government for funding to redevelop a dangerous road junction, or showing how shockingly simple it is to save a life by promoting Public Access Defibrillators, ensuring the health and safety of my constituents is always my top priority. Readers will be aware of the Jock’s Lodge junction to the south of Beverley, which has become a blight for local road users and a
hotspot for accidents and injuries. We’re facing an uphill battle to get the Government to support a £40m bid to redevelop the road, but I’m going to keep fighting for it. Last month I spoke to the Transport Secretary to make the case in person, as I know how strongly residents feel about the problem junction. The constant queues and dangerous layout threaten to drive businesses and visitors away. I’ll do everything I can to defy the odds and secure this unprecedented funding to revamp the road between Jock’s Lodge and the Castle Hill roundabout. While pushing to improve local road safety, I’m also stepping up my campaign to ensure that poor coverage is no longer a roadblock to saving sufferers of Sudden Cardiac Arrests. I’ve recently launched the CADEY (Community Access Defibrillators for East Yorkshire) campaign to increase
the awareness and availability of these crucial, life-saving devices. With the help of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, I’ve identified 60 communities across Beverley and Holderness that still do not have a registered defibrillator. I’ll soon be hosting the second meeting of the CADEY Committee, which brings together
medical providers, fundraisers and ambulance responders, and these black spots will be our first focus. Graham Stuart is the Conservative MP for Beverley & Holderness you can contact him through the following channels: T: 01482 679687 E: graham@grahamstuart.com www.grahamstuart.com
Microchip scanning devices can now be found in police stations Dog owners across the East Riding could be reunited with the dogs quicker as microchip scanning devices can now be found in police stations. East Riding of Yorkshire Council has given Humberside Police four devices which will be available at police stations in Beverley, Bridlington, Goole and Hornsea/ Withernsea. As it is now the law for all dogs to be microchipped, any lost or stray dogs can now be scanned by police staff who will be able to reunite owners and pets directly without the involvement of the council’s dog wardens.

assist the police in identifying the owners of dogs which, for various reasons, come to our attention. “Dogs used by poachers involved in hare coursing in particular, can be scanned to ascertain if the owners are complying with the law.
Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: The police do get calls from the public reporting lost or stray dogs so it made sense to give them a scanning device for some of the East Riding police stations.
“It also means that the police don’t have to contact the council’s dog wardens so they can they can reunite owner and dog quickly.” PC Brandon Ward, wildlife/rural crime officer with Humberside Police, said: “Having the ability to check a dog’s microchip will
“If they are found not to be chipped or details are not up to date, we will then inform the relevant local authority for them to take action against the owner. “Being able to quickly identify a dog’s owner when it has been used for committing offences and abandoned allows us to follow up further lines of enquiry very quickly. “Another benefit is that we can identify dogs which have been reported lost or stolen and return them to their rightful owner.”

No kitchen sink drama: top tips and tricks to help make your kitchen renovation run smoothly Planning a kitchen renovation this year? Here’s everything you need to know before you start.
As open plan living becomes ever more popular, a combined kitchen/dining/living room, often called the ‘family room’, has become the heart of the home, for everything from standup breakfasts to more formal entertaining. It’s no surprise then that when people buy a new house, one of the first projects they tackle is often a kitchen overhaul. According to the very latest 2018 Kitchen Trends report, 40 per cent of kitchen renovations
BeverleyMag March 2018
were started after a new house purchase. And with an average spend of £10,300, rising to £11,700 for rooms of 100sq ft or above, it’s essential the work is done to a high standard. To ensure your new house project goes smoothly, Rachael Cummings, BeverleyMag features editor, offers these essential tips. LIST IT OUT Keep a note of all the bits you plan to store in your kitchen, from appliances, utensils, crockery, pots and pans to your pantry’s collection of spices. Having an idea of this will help when it comes to planning your kitchen storage needs. You could even include wish list items which you hope to have in the future to ensure your kitchen design has longevity.
Considering details such as cupboard doors, taps, hardware and worktops will help you identify your look.
KNOW YOUR STYLE Researching different types of kitchen designs and thinking about your favourite colour schemes, shapes, sizes and styles is the fun part of a renovation project.
If you’re really unsure about what you want, sometimes thinking about what you don’t like is an easier place to start. Continued on page 8

MEASURE UP The golden rule ‘measure twice, cut once’ is one to live by during a kitchen project. Accurate measurements of your current kitchen and dining space, including elements such as windows, doors and fuse boxes, are essential. It’s always worth asking for a second opinion from whomever will be fitting your kitchen to ensure shedules keep on track.

GET IN THE PROS Working with a good team of professionals who have solid industry knowledge is crucial to ensuring a smooth kitchen renovation. Not only can they advise on the viability of ideas, but they’ll also be able to recommend the best suppliers, materials and processes. Continued on page 10

House & Home MANAGING DAILY ROUTINES It’s inevitable that remodelling a kitchen will slightly disrupt the daily routine but planning ahead can save unnecessary hassle. Buying a first home: do today’s millennials really have it tougher?
The housing woes of the younger generation are well documented. Millennials in particular or so it is claimed - have suffered a double blow of spiralling house prices and stagnant wages.
The average deposit paid by those taking their first steps onto the ladder in 1977 was £1,094. This had doubled to £2,200 by 1997 but has soared in the past 20 years, hitting £25,867 last year.
Prevented from saving thanks to high rents and other living costs, those who can get on the ladder are increasingly reliant on the “bank of mum and dad” - the generosity and wealth of their parents.
The relaxed market allowed firsttime buyers to borrow far more and extend themselves further, keeping deposits low.
What do the facts say? Data provided by Savills, the estate agents, paints a detailed picture of the situation facing those looking to climb the first rung of the housing ladder across the decades.
1. More money is spent on deposits than ever... The figures clearly show that firsttime buyers today are forking out more for their deposits – both in monetary terms and as a proportion of overall salary - than previous generations.
Deposits remained low between 1977 and 1997, despite rising house prices, due to the “relaxation” of Britain’s mortgage market, according to Frances Clacy, of Savills.
Perhaps more striking is the change in the percentage of annual salary spent on deposits by first-time buyers. In 1997 a deposit would cost just 12pc of your salary; in 2017 it is nearly 65pc. Ms Clacy said: “Since the credit crunch, it has become much, much more difficult for first time buyers to save enough money for a deposit and this has become the overriding affordability constraint. “By contrast, ultra low interest rates have meant that the cost of servicing the mortgage has been much less of an issue, despite the almost complete dominance of capital repayment mortgages.”
2. ...but mortgages are much cheaper Although there are signs that
mortgage rates may be about to swing upwards, they have been at record lows for the best part of a decade.
release some of this to help their children onto the housing ladder and even up the imbalance that has occurred.”
This is a glint of light for first-time buyers who, once they eventually get on the ladder, can at least be confident that their mortgage will be cheaper to service than that of their parents.
4. ... so first-time buyers are borrowing more
In 1977 buyers spent about 13pc of their salary on mortgage interest payments and by 1997, when rates were closer to 10pc, this had shot to one fifth. Today that figure is just 8pc. Mark Harris, of SPF Private Clients, the brokers, said: “Despite the many difficulties of getting on the ladder, it’s not all bad news with cheap mortgage rates meaning that interest payments as a percentage of income have actually reduced, while doubledigit interest rates are a definite thing of the past.”
3. House prices have consistently increased... It’s no secret that property has generated fantastic returns for owners over the past 20 years. Land Registry figures only go back as far as 1995 but, since then, the average price of a property in Britain has quadrupled from £67,893 to £278,266. This has put pressure on first-time buyers as a larger deposit and a larger mortgage will be needed at a time when there is also a squeeze on wages. There is one positive aspect to house price growth for many of those looking to buy: their parents will be wealthier. Mr Harris said: “As a result of the growth in equity in their homes, the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ is increasingly being called upon to
BeverleyMag March 2018
In 1977, the average mortgage advance to a first-time buyer was just £8,376. This has risen steadily in line with house price growth in the 40 years since, quadrupling by 1997 and hitting £136,736 last year. Additionally, the average advance 40 years ago was just under twice (1.85x) average annual earnings. Today that figure is 3.58, showing that first-time buyers are being forced to extend further and further.
5. There are huge regional differences Unsurprisingly there are stark regional differences, with first-time buyers in London and the south east facing a much steeper slope than their counterparts elsewhere. The average mortgage advance in the capital was £263,687 last year, compared to £111,623 in the north west of England. This meant Londoners were borrowing more than four times their income. Deposits too are eye-opening. In London, the average deposit £95,469, a staggering 145pc of annual income. In the north west by contrast first-time buyers put down just under £20,000 – 55pc of income. Ms Clacy said: “In London and parts of the South East, first time buyers have begun to hit up against the limits of mortgage regulation. Stress testing of affordability has essentially capped the amount they can borrow relative to their income, leaving them with very high deposit requirements.”

WHY YOU SHOULD WEAR MORE VINTAGE IN 2018
Feeling uninspired about dieting and getting down the gym? (me too). In that case I have a new resolution for you: wear more vintage this year. Here are some reasons why wearing vintage will make you feel fantastic:
1. VINTAGE IS SPECIAL It’s oh-so-easy to fall into the habit of wearing clothes because they’re comfortable. We all love to wear jeans and a T-shirt sometimes, but every day? Each morning when I do the school run the mums look as much in uniform as the kids. Jeans, winter boots and some kind of dark jumper, or jeans, flip flops and t-shirts in the summer. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but wouldn’t it be nice to stand out a little? For someone to comment on how much they love your jacket? Or the earrings you’re wearing? In that case I recommend adding some vintage to your wardrobe! You don’t need to completely re-style yourself to start wearing vintage, you can mix and match vintage with modern clothes for a really great look. How about a cute 60s minidress over leggings and winter boots? Or a bold printed 1950s blouse peeking out from underneath your jumper? It can even be as simple as adding

a quirky vintage bag or necklace to clothes you already have. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes! 2. VINTAGE IS AFFORDABLE Let me just get one thing straight – buying vintage isn’t the same as buying from a charity shop. You don’t expect a t-shirt for 10p. If you want to get quality vintage clothes from 40, 50, 60 years ago you will have to pay for them, but nowhere as much as you would if you were buying the equivalent item new now. Quality of clothes was generally better back in the 1950s and 60s: fabrics were nicer and a lot of items were tailor made. This means you’re getting a much better quality of clothes than you might do if you spent the same amount in one of the big ‘fast fashion’ high street shops. Can you imagine a dress from Tesco still being worn in 50 years time? Seems unlikely doesn’t it? That’s the difference in quality I’m talking about.
3. VINTAGE IS UNIQUE The big high street giants (Next, Topshop, ASOS, H&M etc) literally make thousands of each design each season, so the odds of turning up to a wedding wearing the same dress as another guest are pretty high. You don’t get that with vintage. Fewer copies of each design were made, and that plus the ravages of time means that you’re very unlikely to see anyone wearing the same vintage dress as you! Plus, when asked where you got your dress from it’s lovely to be able to say ‘it’s a vintage 1950s dress’ secure in the knowledge that they can’t get straight online and buy exactly the same dress (in the sales when you bought it full price). There are lots of other reasons to wear vintage (it’s recycling after all and great for the environment!), but the main one is that it’ll make you feel great! So embrace vintage for 2018!

Our expert chef Keiran Mann offers practical advice to tackle all your cooking dilemmas. Q. I prefer eating brown rice because it’s healthier, but I never seem to get it right when I’m cooking, as it takes longer to cook than white rice. Do you have a foolproof method?
Q. I’d like to freeze baked muffins and muffin batter to use later. What’s the best way to store them? A. When cooled, cooked Q. What’s the difference
between a sorbet and a granita? Can I make granita at home without any special equipment?
A. Frozen ices fall into two
categories. Sorbets are stirred often during freezing, adding air to lighten and soften the texture of the finished product. Sorbets have a smoother and softer texture to granitas – which are grainier and have large ice particles. Granitas are simple to make. One of my favourites is a coffee granita. All you need to do is boil 150g caster sugar with 250ml water for about 3 minutes until a syrup is formed; Add six

muffins can be wrapped in foil and frozen for up to three months. To reheat, either defrost at room temperature, microwave or bake in the foil in a pre heated oven at 180C for about 10-15 minutes. With uncooked batter, you can freeze in the tray first so it takes shape, then wrap the frozen batter muffins individually and re-freeze. Add another 10-12 minutes cooking time when cooking from frozen.
Q. How can I avoid the oily taste on tempura vegetables and prawns? A. I use a batter made of half
rice flour and half plain flour, an egg and very cold fizzy mineral water to bind. Mix the batter lightly – a few lumps are good! Make sure to keep the batter over a bowl of ice to keep it very cold once you have mixed it. Heat fresh cooking oil at 190C and cook the tempura in batches of no more than six pieces. Drain excess oil on kitchen paper and season with sea salt. Allow the oil to cool down before cooking the next batch. Serve immediately.

Roy Woodcock’s
World of Wine Rioja Roy
I’ve always enjoyed a glass of Rioja - or Roy-Ja as a good friend of mine always calls it after first buying me a bottle many years ago and getting her pronunciation all mixed up. I’m not alone in liking it, of course, because Rioja (and particularly red Rioja) is one of Britain’s best-loved wines. Much of its success is that it goes so well with a whole range of foods; if we have roast lamb on a Sunday, for instance, I can’t think of anything better than a decent Rioja Reserva. Not surprisingly, with Rioja being Spain’s most famous wine region, it also goes particularly well with Spanish food, especially lamb and pork and recipes that contain red peppers, paprika, garlic and saffron. And with the craze for Tapas showing no signs of abating it’s no wonder we Brits are consuming it in ever increasing quantities. Moroccan tagines - Chris does a great dish of chicken and apricots will pair well, as will a moussaka and
mild and medium-hot curries. Global Rioja sales stabilised in 2017 after many years of increase, but that in itself was seen as success against a climate of an overall fall in wine consumption in the UK. Globally, exports make up more than a third of all Rioja sales and the UK remains Rioja’s largest market, with 33.4 per cent of all exports followed by Germany with just 15 per cent. Certainly, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, the volume of Spanish wine consumed in Britain has risen by more than a quarter in the last five years. During the same period, imports of French wine shrank by 13 per cent. The Rioja vineyards of northern Spain consist of some 112,000 acres on both banks of the Ebro. The popular reds are primarily made from Tempranillo grapes, although most are blended with other varieties – mainly Garnacha, as well as Graciano and Mazuelo. But the region also produces several white wines, using grapes like Garnacha Blanca, Verdejo and Viura. Rioja is split into four categories, based on the amount of time it has aged, with the “best” being the
oldest (depending on your tastes). Rioja Jovan is the cheapest of the lot, with little to no ageing in oak barrels. Crianza is more expensive but still accessible, spending one year in the oak and another in the bottle. Then comes Reserva, which spends a year in the oak and two years in the bottle. Finally we have the most expensive; the Gran Reserva, which arrives having spent two years in the oak barrels and three years ageing in the bottle. But Rioja has certainly changed over the past 20 years. Once the common hallmark was a strong aroma of oak due to prolonged storage in casks; now modern producers are tending to adapt themselves better to international taste by favouring ageing in the bottle. The result is that the intensive aroma of the wood is giving way to a richer, fruitier and more complex bouquet. Perhaps that’s the reason for the recent sales boom. * Something to make you cry into your beer (or wine glass) is the news that the UK has the fourth highest prices for alcoholic drinks in Europe, according to a study by the Office for National statistics. The UK average drink price is 43 per cent above the average in Europe. Leading the pack is Finland with a staggering 76 per cent above the average followed by Ireland at 74 per cent, then Sweden 44 per cent.
France is 16 per cent cheaper while the cheapest place for a drink is Bulgaria with 35 per cent below the average. The average price for a bottle of wine sold in the UK shops is currently £5.56, with over half the price being given to the Government in tax. The duty on wine is £2.16; there is also VAT to pay worth £0.93p, making a total tax take of £3.08. The remaining £2.46 is eaten up with retailer profits, typically about 35 per cent of the sale price, transportation around £0.20p. This leaves the winery with £0.82p to cover growing the grapes, making the wine, packaging and making a profit. * Marks & Spencer has reported a 15 per cent rise in sales of its 17-strong range of English sparkling wines last year and predicts that the trend is set to continue into 2018. They’re also predicting a strong year for English sparkling in 2018 prompted by national events such as the birth of the royal baby, two royal weddings and the FIFA World Cup. According to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, M&S is not alone. Total sales in the sparkling wine category grew by six per cent in UK supermarkets in the year ending September 2017. The latest figures reveal that over £120 million bottles of fizz, worth over £850 million, were sold in British shops and supermarkets in 2017.

Independent Beverley
ndependent Beverley Your guide to Beverley’s independent businesses. Hidden cafes, beautiful gift shops, professional trades and craftsmen, artists and purveyors of delicious local produce. Beverley’s indiependents reflect our town, our cultures and our interests and they make us different. We want people to know the alternatives to the identikit nationwide high street stores. So we want people to know where these places are, how to find them and what they can offer you. We also want to tell the stories behind people who brought them in to being. As well as this, Independent Beverley wants to build a community of independents who share ideas and support each other. Why should we support our independents? Because through doing so, we support our local economy and people’s livelihoods. We’re also supporting crafts people, experts in their fields and people who care absolutely 100% about what and why they’re doing it. We don’t want you to boycott your super markets, we want to give you choices and make you think before you buy that next loaf of bread or gift for family or friends.

Chocolate-inspired dramatic sensation to take over Beverley streets at Easter WHITE Rabbit Chocolatiers and all-female theatre company She Productions have joined forces to run an Easter ‘Eggstravaganza’ of family entertainment in Beverley. They are working together on an all-original musical play created by director of She, Annie Kirkman, called ‘Alice’s Eggstravaganza in Wonderland’. And the production, which includes a walk through central Beverley from the East Riding Theatre venue in Lord Roberts Road, to White Rabbit’s Dyer Lane shop, promises to be a veritable feast of entertainment for all involved. Ed Hawkes, Co-owner of White Rabbit, said the event is all part of his family’s aim of building an imaginative
experience around chocolate, that brings families and the wider community together. “Even more so than Christmas, Easter is probably THE time for celebrating with chocolate,” he said. “Easter eggs and other characters are all part of the magic of this special festival which also marks the imminent arrival of Spring, and so we thought partnering with She Productions again was a great way to celebrate fabulous food and entertainment in one go. “And of course, we particularly love the way our own white rabbit emblem – which is inspired both by the sculpture in Beverley’s St Mary’s church and a little by the magical tale of Alice, features centre stage!” Based on the classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’ story, their version
Independent Beverley involves – yes, you’ve guessed it – a mischievous white rabbit and a protagonist called Alice, with bags of audience participation. Aimed at families, attendees are invited to get involved in helping Alice bring the naughty bunny in line. And the dramatised tale even includes a specially-written song about White Rabbit’s chocolate shop. Here’s how She Productions are billing the production: “Deep down the rabbit warren, things aren’t quite as they seem. A family feud has shaken Wonderland to its core and the two cotton-tailed culprits have let their jealousy get the better of them. And so, late last night, the White Rabbit fled from her home in a rage, but she didn’t leave empty-handed. “Today is the Queen of Hearts’ Annual Eggstravaganza Party and she is relying on the Easter Bunny to deliver her prized chocolate eggs. But, or course, the Easter Bunny has awoken this morning to an empty basket and a missing sister. Alice needs your help to retrieve the eggs and return them to their rightful owner or it’s ‘off with their heads’!” And the performance promises to be quite a spectacle too. Classed as a ‘promenade piece’, it involves cast and audience members parading from East Riding Theatre to the White Rabbit Chocolatiers shop and café on Dyer Lane, where the children will receive a chocolate treat and, on the Friday and Saturday show days, will also have the chance to take part in a chocolate egg-decorating workshop. Alice will be played by Grace Christiansen, a local singer-songwriter who has also worked with the renowned John Godber theatre company. “Both our organisations are passionate about helping to put Beverley on the map and bring visitors to the town
and surrounding area, and we’re really hoping that our show will add to the Easter weekend ambiance, said writer and She Executive Producer Annie Kirkman. “We’ve also tried to make it as accessible as possible and give it real family appeal, to attract people who might not normally consider attending the theatre, and encourage kids to experience the thrill of live performance and leave their phones and iPads at home.” Their first event, in 2017, was sponsored by Beverley Racecourse in 2017, and was performed at the ground. She Productions are currently company in residence at East Riding Theatre, with plans to expand their offering and take some of their productions on tour over the coming weeks and months. Performance dates for Alice’s Eggstravaganza in Wonderland are: Wednesday 28 March, 11am and 2pm Thursday 29 March, 11am and 2pm Monday 2 April, 2pm Friday 30 March, 2pm* Saturday 31 March, 2pm* Tickets cost £5 per child and £6 per adult, apart from the performances marked with a *, which cost £6.50 per child and £7.50 per adult and include a limited edition White Rabbit Chocolatiers’ egg decorating workshop.

March Madness Family historians looking to add more details to the story of their ancestors will be interested to know that a fascinating series of mental hospital registers are now a lot easier to research. The registers are Mens and Womens Case Books, which form part of the Broadgate Hospital archive (formerly East Riding Mental Hospital). Held here at the Treasure house, they contain case records for individuals who were admitted to Broadgate between 1871 and 1914.
BeverleyMag March 2018
Some of the details for each patient include name, age, marital status, cause of insanity, whether suicidal, notes on countenance, pulse, ‘bowels’, and also dated comments on the condition and progress of the patient. Some even contain a photograph. Thanks to the work of volunteers, each individual patient mentioned in the case books have been listed in the archive catalogue, meaning that family historians can search by name for ancestors, who may have been admitted to Broadgate during this period. The majority of family history researchers using our facility tend to focus on the census and parish registers as the main resources, but they also have original archives like these case books at their fingertips to produce a more detailed family tree. Broadgate Hospital was situated
just outside Walkington and is now a housing development. It opened in 1871 and remained so for 118 years until its closure in 1989. Sadly, despite our modern preconceptions of mental hospitals, some of the patients admitted to Broadgate in its early days would not be diagnosed insane today. Cases such as epilepsy and depression, which we treat relatively easily today, were not as well understood, and were referred to as a form of ‘idiocy’ or ‘stupidity’. One example is that of William George Marsden, a gardener from Pocklington, admitted to Broadgate on 23rd November 1905 aged 56 years, and clearly suffering from what we would now call clinical depression. The case notes describe him as ‘dull, stupid, lain in bed’ and state that: “He is suffering from Melancholia. He is depressed and morbidly
emotional, becomes anxious at trifling circumstances, and at times becomes greatly agitated and threatens suicide. You can search descriptions of the case book entries via the East Riding Archives catalogue online ( www.eastriding.gov.uk/ CalmView ) using the finding number NH6/64 .

UK diesel car sales plunge in January
Sales of diesel cars have continued to drop significantly, with the first figures of 2018 showing a 25% fall from last January. Overall, the UK’s new car market declined by 6.3% in January with 163,615 cars leaving showrooms. It follows a downward trend that started last April after years of record growth. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said the decline in diesel sales was concerning, although dealers said the figures were “an expected correction”. Sales of petrol cars rose by 8% as consumers switched away from diesel, sending market share down to 36% of new vehicles, as the extent of the air pollution crisishas become evident and government raised tax on vehicles not meeting the latest emissions standards. Electric and other alternative fuel vehicles continued to expand their sales rapidly, albeit from a small base, with just more than 9,000 sold in January. Sales of SUVs also rose by 6.6%. Business purchases of vehicles fell by almost 30%, possibly affected by tax changes in the budget.
British factories are still largely invested in diesel technology that had been backed by government for greater fuel efficiency, before the extent of rigged emission tests and urban air pollution became clear. Last year, more than two in five of the cars leaving British production lines were diesels, as well as more than 1m engines, which the SMMT said directly supported about 3,350 jobs. The SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes, said: “Given fleet renewal is the fastest way to improve air quality and reduce CO2, we need government policy to encourage take-up of the latest advanced low-emission diesels as, for many drivers, they remain the right choice economically and environmentally.” The director of the National Franchised Dealers Association, Sue Robinson, said: “The sector performed exceptionally well in the first quarter of 2017, meaning the decline reflects an expected market
New Driving Laws for 2018 Fines for misusing motorways From March this year, if you drive in the hard shoulder when it is closed, you could be hit with a hefty fine.
Highways England has reportedly sent 80,000 letters to motorists warning them not to ignore signs forbidding the use of the hard shoulder.

correction. “Franchised dealers continue to see a buoyant market on the used car side.”
The government’s stance on diesel cars? From 6 April 2018, all company car drivers running diesels will see the long-standing 3% benefit-in-kind supplement raised to 4%; a move that will penalise individuals for choosing diesel for its fuel efficiency and therefore make it less attractive amongst some user-choosers; even though for high mileage drivers it is the only option. An even more overt message was the penalising of new generation Euro-6 engines which were rounded on for not complying with the Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards, even though they don’t currently exist and will not be mandatory on new cars until 2021. This was a particularly bizarre move, worthy of Kafka, but by moving all diesels that do not comply with
New MOT rules
The MOT will become harder to pass this year, with vehicles rated out of three categories - with only one deemed a pass. Cars given a ‘dangerous’ or ‘major’ rating will automatically fail, but a car with just a minor fault may still be able to pass. So a vehicle with an oil leak could in theory get a major rating if it’s found to
RDE2 (and that is currently all diesels) into a higher VED band from April 2018, the government has made a statement of intent; it might only equate to an extra £20 in the first year of registration but can be seen as an indicator of how diesel will be treated in the future. Further down the line, the government has pledged to outlaw the sale of all new purely diesel or petrol cars from 2040.
So, should I still consider buying a diesel car? If it’s a new car and your annual mileage covers a lot of long journeys, then yes. It will be fitted with the latest Euro-6 type engine and will be high on fuel economy and low on emissions. If you are buying used then factor in that models registered before September 2015 may have older generation Euro-5 engines which, at some stage in the future, are likely to be the next to be scrutinised by the government and local authorities. be dripping, but otherwise the failing would be a minor. From May 20, a diesel loophole will be closed and a check of diesel filters will also form part of the test. If you’ve had your filter removed or tampered with, then you will fail.

The SMARTer way to repair your car JJ’s SMART Repairs, based in Station Road, Cottingham is a small, family run business consisting of John Allen and his son Jack (hence JJ’s). SMART actually stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Techniques using a range of products and systems manufactured by HELLA. The business, which opened its doors back in 2015 has steadily grown under the watchful eyes of John and Jack. The fact that between them they have over 25 years experience in the car body and paint industry, will no doubt be testament to the fantastic service they provide. Has your car bumper been scuffed, car been scratched, alloy wheels kerb-damaged or minor dents and stone chips to your paintwork? Well the good news is that there is now a new, cost effective way of making your car look as good as new and at a fraction of the cost of a usual body shop facility. “We are a much cheaper alternative to a body shop. For example a scuffed bumper repair in a body shop could cost you in the region of £350 - £400, whereas our cost would be in the region of £160 - £180,” said John. From their fully fitted workshop based conveniently near Cottingham railway
station, they can offer SMART repairs whatever the weather. You can drop off your car in a morning, then hop on the train to work and collect it on your return, or they also offer a pick up and delivery service if required. If your car is a well-loved older model or your brand new pride and joy, getting the exact colour match of paint for your repairs is not a worry any more. Using the latest technology, the ‘Sonne Vision Spectrophotometer,’ John and Jack can identify a perfect colour match for your vehicle. The Spectrophotometer adjusts to the condition of the paint on your car, then selects the perfect colour match from its library of 70,000 colours, including metallic, pearl and xirallics. Other services offered include a triple stage winter or summer waxing process to keep your vehicle in showroom condition, Power Polish, Headlight Polishing and alloy wheel repairs and starting in March they will also be offering a windscreen chip repair service starting from just £45.
“We pride ourselves in making things look as good as new again. We offer an affordable solution to regaining that smart look to your vehicle,” said Jack.

Health & Wellbeing
Just one hour a week of social interaction helps dementia patients Chatting to care-home residents about their interests boosts their quality of life, according to trial. A trial involving more than 800 people with dementia across 69 English care homes found that increasing the amount of time spent communicating with residents could boost older people’s wellbeing when combined with personalised care. As well as improving quality of life, the programme reduced levels of agitation and aggression. Prof Clive Ballard of the University of Exeter medical school said: “While many care homes are excellent, standards still vary hugely. We have previously found that the average amount of social interaction for people with dementia was just two minutes a day. It’s hardly surprising when that has a knock-on effect on quality of life and agitation. “Our approach improves care and saves money. We must roll out approaches that work to do justice to some of the most vulnerable people in society.”
The trial, funded by the National Institute of Health Research, ran between January 2013 and September 2015. People with dementia were randomly picked to take part in the programme for nine months or continue with their usual treatment. At the end of the period they were assessed for quality of life, agitation and other symptoms. Two “care-staff champions” at each home were designated to perform simple tasks such as talking to residents about their interests and decisions around their own care. The results, published in the journal Plos Medicine on Wednesday, showed statistically significant improvements in residents included in the programme, when compared with those who were not in it. The benefits were found to be greatest in those with moderately severe dementia.
The research, led by the University of Exeter, King’s College London and Oxford Health NHS foundation trust, is believed to be the largest nonpharmacological randomised control trial in people with dementia living in care homes. Dr Jane Fossey of Oxford Health NHS foundation trust said: “Taking a person-centred approach is about getting to know each resident as an individual – their interests and preferences – and reflecting these in all aspects of care. It can improve the lives of the person themselves and it can be rewarding for carers too.” There are an estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK. It has been described as the biggest health challenge facing the
country, with the figure expected to increase to more than 1 million by 2025 and reach 2 million by 2051, according to Alzheimer’s Society. The researchers say the next challenge is to roll out the programme to the 300,000 people with dementia living in the UK’s 28,000 care homes. Doug Brown, the director of research at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “This study shows that training to provide this type of individualised care, activities and social interactions can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of people living with dementia in care homes. It also shows that this kind of effective care can reduce costs, which the stretched social care system desperately needs.”

treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer. Laurie Fergusson, public health lead for healthy lifestyles at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any symptoms, but if you’re worried about your risk or are experiencing any symptoms, visit your GP. “It’s important to take note of the symptoms that can present themselves, as catching it early can make a lot of difference.”
Changes to look out for include:
Less common symptoms include:
l Needing to urinate more often than usual, including at night – for example if you often need to go again after two hours
l Pain when urinating
l Difficulty starting to urinate l Straining or taking a long time to finish urinating l A weak flow when you urinate l A feeling that you’re not emptying your bladder fully
l Pain when ejaculating l Blood in your urine or semen* l Problems getting or keeping an erection – this isn’t a common symptom of a prostate problem and is more often linked to other health conditions such as diabetes or heart problems. *Blood in your urine or semen can be caused by other health problems.
l Needing to rush to the toilet – sometimes leaking before you get there
Talk to your doctor if you see any blood in your urine or semen.

March: The Facts...
1. March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war as it was the month in which the military campaigning season got under way after winter. 2. In Old English one name for the month of March was “Hlyda” meaning “loud” possibly because of the roaring March winds. 3. March is the only month with three consecutive consonants in its name in English. 4. An old proverb says that “March comes in a like a lion and goes out like a lamb”, which means that winter is ending and spring is beginning.

Zen and Asian Garden Ideas Create your own area of tranquility with a beautiful Zen inspired garden space. Historically the original Zen Gardens were created by the Buddhist monks as spaces for solitude and meditation that simultaneously represent the human’s admiration for the beauty of nature. The origin of the gardens can be traced back to the late 14th century, and in the beginning, they were small secluded spaces within the monasteries composed mainly of gravel, rocks, and stones arranged
in such a manner which closely resembled a natural landscape. The impression of water was achieved through wave-like patterns in the gravel, and the rocks and stones were representative of mountains and hills. Japanese Rock Gardens or Dry Asian Landscapes often used these methods where water was scarce. This concept was developed and upgraded through the years and new elements – lakes, bridges, lighting and art installations were all introduced. Today a Zen Garden is a collective term for all interpretations on the subjects that explore the inspiration of the Asian aesthetics, philosophy, and admiration for nature. The essential elements in a traditional Japanese Zen Garden are
gravel, stones and in some cases moss. Such a garden is created to be felt not observed. The presence of living elements is minimal. There were no plants or lush vegetation, no objects created by humans. Through the years under the influence of different interactions between the Asian cultures the Zen gardens have been influenced

with plants and items from Japan, China and Korea, which has led to the emergence of a specific Asian style in the art of gardening. Many specific elements exist and are used together, in combinations or singularly to create the the so-called Asian Style Gardens or Zen Gardens. Let’s explore the primary key groups of such elements… Continued on page 48

Rocks & Stones The rocks and stones compositions are maybe the most important elements used in the Asian art of gardening. They exude power and stability combined with tranquility and timeless sensation. With their rough amorphous structure, they’re often used as a counterpoint to the soft vision of the sand and water elements – a contradiction that incites a deep reflection. Raked Sand and Pebbles In the stylised landscape composition of the Zen gardens water premises – like seas and rivers – are represented through spaces of
waved gravel. A multitude of carefully formed shallow furrows and patterns symbolise the waves and the movement of water which introduces the dynamics of it into the composition. Most commonly used are the crushed white or beige granite which is carefully shaped with specially designed rakes. Precisely those lines and waves of granite and gravel are amongst the most common and characteristic visual elements of Zen garden design. Koi Fish Ponds Water is also an essential component from fountains with troughs, through streams and cascades, to lakes with bridges. The water goes “hand in hand” with the stone representing the ying-yang dynamics they contradict and supplement each other in continuous harmony. Stone Lanterns And because one of the main aims of the Zen garden is to create a well-balanced and harmonious environment for meditation the man-made features are avoided in
the garden design. The exceptions to that rule are the Stone Lanterns (also known as Pagoda Lights). They vary in forms and sizes, in detailing and decoration. Created to accommodate the oil lamps and the candles the pagoda-shaped lanterns are arranged in special places throughout the garden and serve simultaneously as a lighting source and as art accents. Japanese Maples Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) is a deciduous tree that can reach a maximum of 6-8 meters of high and is characteristic for the territories of Japan, China, Korea and East Mongolia. Its leaves have a distinctive pattern with five or seven peaks. The colouring of the trees can vary, but the most desired are the ones that have bright red colours. Moss Gardens Because of its endurance under extremely harsh conditions, the moss often is the only living component of the Japanese Zen gardens. Viewed as a clam and unpretentious plant the moss

needs only shadow and moisture to thrive. In the mild and humid Asian climate, the moss is widely spread. Its colours and hues vary in a broad colour range- from deep green to yellowish and can be successfully introduced in water gardens as well in dry arrangements. Arched Chinese Red Bridges The red arched bridges are a unique trademark of the Chinese

gardens. They are small in size and traditionally are composed entirely of wood. Their arched high point is usually the highest place in the garden that allows the best view of the surrounding beauty. Stone Water Basins The Stone water baths originate in Japan where they are traditionally used as a place to wash and clean before initiating a tea ceremony. Called tsukubai – literally “stopping basin” they are composed in such a manner that one must bow to use them. In this way, apart from the trivial purples of cleansing they also provoke certain humility of spirit and attune one with the spiritual aim of the tea ceremony. In today’s garden design the stone water baths
bring a more decorative value to the garden’s decor. Stepping Stone Pathways “Don’t leave anything to chance” is an important principle when it comes to Zen garden design. Cautiously selected paths on which one can explore and feel the gardens spirit are one of the essential and key elements in Asian gardening. Arraigning walking paths through the usage of stepping stones is essential for the right configuration of the design. Those pathways can lead through gravel, moss, grass and even water features - inviting you on a step by step journey to discover the beauty and the spiritual secrets of a Zen garden.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. ARE YOU DOING ANYTING FOR LENT?
For me, Lent is a time to take stock of my life and see if there’s anything I should be doing better….. and inevitably there is always something. Even if you don’t follow Lenten traditions, it’s still a good time to consider stopping a bad habit or starting something positive. It’s not just about giving up chocolate, why not think about spending more time with an elderly relative or carving out more quality time with your children. If you do that anyway, how about a good deed every day? It doesn’t have to be a huge thing and take a lot of time, but it could mean the world of difference to someone, restore their faith in humanity or, at least, bring a smile to their face.
SPRING CLEAN Talking of starting afresh, it’s that time of year again when I want to clear out the clutter and spring clean my house. I just want to know where it all comes from. How can we possibly have accumulated so much ‘stuff’? Now, I am one of those people who likes to keep things because they might come in useful one day. Well my garage and attic aren’t really agreeing with me anymore so it’s time to put on my big girl pants and be ruthless! Ruthless isn’t a word that I would associate with myself very often, if ever really, but needs must – and I know it will be worth it in the end.
MUST-SEE MOVIE If you haven’t seen it yet, I thoroughly recommend going to the cinema to watch The Greatest Showman. It’s one of those films that was apparently slow out of the gate at the box office but word-ofmouth has turned it into a must-see movie – and I couldn’t agree more. Inspired by (not necessarily historically accurate) it tells the story of how Barnum, played by Hugh Jackman, created his famous circus. There’s a great cast and a real sense of spectacle and wonder as you watch. The musical numbers are, of course, fantastic. Even my husband and teenage son (who are not fans of musicals) gave it the thumbs up. And let’s face it, Hugh Jackman is always a pleasure to watch! And finally …….a Happy St Patrick’s Day to you all for March 17th and Happy Easter!
