BeverleyMag January 2017 Dear Readers Welcome to the January edition of the magazine. I can’t get over how quickly another year has flown by. I would like to wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. I am, like most of you; looking forward to what 2017 has in store for us all with it being Hull’s UK City of Culture year. I am sure that we will more than reap the benefits in Beverley and the East Yorkshire region as Hull puts on a show for not only the rest of the UK but for our near neighbours across the water in Holland and Belgium. I expect that we are going to be weary by this time next year and totally cultured out if all the hype lives up to expectations. I am looking forward to seeing some fantastic entertainment and have already set my sights on the Paul Heaton gig in June and the Roots & Routes gigs that will be stopping over at St. Marys too. We have all our regulars: Local News, Puzzle Page and Gardening section in the magazine for your enjoyment. We have Travel from Marion Owen, Property from Michael Allison and we also have our regular local sports news from SMO. Robyn Cleveland, Head Virgir at the Minster has her regular Minding The Minster column and talks about finding peace and the love of God within the Minster. We are giving away some amazing tickets to see the talented Paul Carrack, Joanne Shaw Taylor (the UK’s first lady of the Blues), and for all you rockers we have Limehouse Lizzy tickets too. Until next month - take care and enjoy the magazine. Kind regards

Graham Stuart MP: letter to constituents Dear Constituent, I’m writing to wish you a Happy New Year. I’m pictured below with Sam Davies from Molescroft Primary School, who won the competition to design my Christmas card this year – as you can see, he did a great job.
Britain will be leaving the European Union. The Prime Minister has been clear: there will be no unnecessary delays in invoking Article 50, the point at which we begin our formal negotiations to leave the EU. The Government will invoke this no later than the end of March, and I’m determined to play my full part in making Brexit a success for our area and for the country as a whole. Brexit aside, there have also been some important themes of continuity, as the economy continues to perform well and employment continues to rise. The unemployment rate in Beverley and Holderness has fallen to 1.7%, and across the country an average of 1,000 jobs have been created every day since May 2010. That hard work needs to continue in 2017. In Parliament, I have been campaigning on a wide range of issues and last week there has been some very welcome news about fair school funding – a cause I have championed since I was first elected. Continued on page 28
2016 has been a year of dramatic change, with the EU referendum in June setting us on a new path and bringing in a new administration under Theresa May.

The Property Column
New Year – New Home
Recently in our Sales and Letting office, the topic of January sales and getting a bargain was discussed. This reminded me that traditionally January is the time of year when there is an increase in property transactions. If you are selling your home, you need to ask is your property marketable now and does it show the best potential? Remember those little jobs that you might have been putting off, can put off buyers. This cannot only influence the viewings but also the price buyers are willing to offer.
6
There are several different agents who will happily discuss with you the selling of your home. But when looking for an agent there are several questions you should consider. These include - is the agent proactive and focused on the selling of your home? Does the agent rely on the internet to sell it? Also, you need to discuss the best marketing approach both in terms of price and speed of sale. An agent who suggests a very low fee or suggests a high price without evidence might be only focussed on
winning your business and this might not be the best option for you. Focusing on buying, whether you are buying for the first time or upsizing or downsizing you still need to consider what you want in terms of price and location plus how you are planning to fund the purchase. If you can clearly state your requirements to the agent this enables them to match you to potential properties. For example, at Martin & Co, if we don’t have the property now, we will keep your details and contact you when a matching property comes available. An excellent agent will provide not only excellent marketing materials and arrange viewings, but also remain focussed on your target. This will include arranging viewings and using the feedback to proactively adjust the marketing to achieve the goal. Importantly keep you informed and ‘in the loop’ throughout the process. By choosing an agent with local knowledge, with local expertise and focuses on you, you should be able to achieve your New Home target. Until next month take care.

Hull & East Riding Mumbler News
Hull & East Riding Mumbler News - Festive Family Fun in Our Local Area Happy New Year everyone! As it’s the start of a new year I’ve made the usual list of resolutions to be healthier, to do more exercise myself and make sure my kids are active and doing more sports and activities. Therefore this month’s column is all about things you can do to start a healthier lifestyle for you and your family after the over indulgence of Christmas.
8
Lots of us make resolutions to get healthier and exercise more but for mums with little ones it’s especially hard to fit this in. However there are lots of new fitness classes aimed at, or suitable for new mums. ‘Us Mums’ are fun and effective fitness sessions suitable for pregnant women or new mums, you can bring your baby along with you to the sessions (up to around 1 year old). They’re run by Hull City Councils Healthy Lifestyles team and there are lots of sessions at venues across the city throughout the week, they’re also either free or very cheap. Find them on facebook or ask at your local children’s centre for timetables. Something I’ve got back into since becoming a mum (after playing at school!) is netball. The local league in Hull is really strong with lots of teams to play for, there is a ‘Back to Netball’ session held at St Marys School which welcomes women of all abilities. There are lots of good parks and countryside locally to go for a run or bike ride yourself but it’s often easier to do in a group. Fitmums are another local organisation that provide running groups and sessions for mums at venues across the city. You can also run in the parks with Park Run, they hold 5km runs every Saturday morning at 9am at East Park, Peter Pan Park next to Costello and Humber Bridge Country Park. Another great event for all ages and abilities is GoTri on the 1st Sunday of each month at East Park boating lake. It’s a mini duathlon with a short 1.5km run, a 6km bike ride and another short 1.5km run, all fully marshalled by Humber Triathletes.
The New Year is also a time for changing routines and starting new hobbies and activities. It’s now Hull 2017 City of Culture year so there are going to be lots of free family events and activities on to try different things. If you want to find some new regular classes for your children to try, and also get active, there are a variety of new things starting locally: Victoria Dock Village Hall has 2 new classes! Footy Tots teach football to children from age 1/walking to 5 years and already hold classes at Winifred Holtby and Brough, their Victoria Dock classes start in January. Music with Mummy run music classes from birth to 4 years at venues across the city and East Riding, they will be launching a new class at Victoria Dock in January too. A totally new class in our area launches in February – Move With Peppa! These are interactive weekly classes for 16 months to 5 year olds, created using the stories from the TV episodes. They launch at Calvella Dance School in Anlaby and the Darby & Joan Hall in Cottingham with more venues to follow. There is also a new swim school in town, Splash Swim Academy have launched at DW Fitness on Mount Pleasant and run lessons for age 3+. Something I’ve tried with my children recently and loved is the new Bouldering area at Rockcity. This is a safe, padded area with various themes to climb without ropes suitable for children over 2. It’s also a great all body workout for grown-ups too and they are holding specific bouldering for fitness sessions. If you’re a mum to a very new baby, Ragamuffin Yoga are starting a new class ‘Mama and Baby Yoga and Baby Massage from Artlink on Princes Avenue. To find children’s classes and groups near you check out the Weekly Classes/Groups section in Mumbler’s Whats On pages. They’re listed by area and day so you can plan your week! Don’t forget to check out the Mumbler website for all things to do with children locally at www. hullandeastriding.mumbler.co.uk, or follow me on facebook and Twitter @Hull_ER_Mumbler. Have a great month!

I’ve added a section to Mumbler under ‘Parents – Fitness’ to list fitness classes suitable for parents.

Minding The Minster
You can find the Wonder, Peace and Love of God in Beverley Minster... Now that the excitement of the Christmas season is past, all the extra chairs have been stacked away, the staging for concerts taken down, and the pine needles swept up, here at Beverley Minster we are slowly getting back to “normal.” The regular service schedules have started up again, and a certain peace has settled. When I was a Virger at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, there was a regular worshipper called Mary, or at least we THINK her name was Mary. Her English was extremely limited, and when I first encounted her, she was having a very serious rant to God at one of the altars. I came to realise that this was quite normal for Mary; she might even be found rolling round on the floor during her rant to God. I could tell she was having a proper go at Him, and it even involved a wagging, pointing finger directly at the cross, and very emotional language, even if I couldn’t
understand it. (I’m sure God could...) The thing was, whatever Mary was working through appeared to be very upsetting to others, even if it was normal for her. I would often just go to her and put a comforting hand on her shoulder, which was often enough to calm her down. I tried to explain to her that it was possible to get her message across to God... quietly. Eventually Mary began to trust me and began to have fewer and fewer of her rants, while still appearing at church quite regularly. Oh, she would still converse with God, but she seemed to be a bit more satisfied that she was being heard without having to be so dramatic. God sees and hears us here at the Minster too, even though all the sparkly tinsel of Christmas is gone. This place is still just as effective at evoking the wonder and peace and love of God, just now in a less dramatic way. Our regular services here at the Minster are meant to inspire and help us to communicate in our our own way to God, all year long. Please come and join us! Robyn Cleveland - Head Virger

Most successful Beverley Festival of Christmas so far Organisers of the Beverley Festival of Christmas have hailed this year’s event as the most successful yet, with an estimated 60,000 people attending the festivities on Sunday, 11 December. The festival benefitted enormously from an increased footprint, which took in North Bar and Flemingate. Feedback from stall holders and the public was really positive; and the area offered a great back-drop for all the activities and the entertainment, from the Westwood Sessions and Birds of Prey worked well. The Flemingate Centre saw thousands of customers visiting the variety of shops and enjoying events, including a Disney-themed Christmas grotto. Graham Tait, Flemingate Centre Manager, said: “We’re delighted to have contributed to a hugely successful event and a great day for Beverley.
14
“The event brought all of Beverley together, with many people taking the opportunity to explore the whole festival, from Flemingate through to Wednesday Market, Saturday Market and on to North Bar. “We’re looking forward to working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s events team and all the partner organisations to make next year’s festival even bigger and better!” Both market traders and established shops seized the opportunity to maximise on the increased footfall that the event provided. Jessica Poma of Poma Piccollo, independent trader down North Bar, said: “The Beverley Festival of Christmas had an extremely positive impact on our business, we were more than ten times as busy and there was a good mix of tourists and locals. We noticed a lot of locals had ventured
down the St Mary’s Arcade who wouldn’t normally, due to the event.” An independent trader in Wednesday Market echoed the positive feedback, saying: “The Beverley Festival of Christmas quite possibly saved us, by Monday we had almost sold out of stock due to the huge numbers of locals and out of town visitors that came to the event. A lot of locals, who didn’t know we were here, do now!” Coach-friendly Beverley also welcomed 63 coaches to the Beverley Festival of Christmas, a new record and up from 55 the year before. Drivers were provided with welcome packs, maps, lunch vouchers and more. Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We have been pleased with the positive feedback received about this year’s Beverley Festival of Christmas and are delighted that both residents and visitors came along to see Santa and his reindeer, bought festive gifts from the 130 traders in attendance and enjoyed the varied programme of live music and activities that took place around the town. “The whole event ran like clockwork, with visitor numbers growing again thanks to extra coach numbers and national media coverage. “The council and EY Events will now evaluate the event so that we can build on this success for 2017.”

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR and guests
Broken Witt Rebels play
Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 26th January 2017 Joanne Shaw Taylor has established herself as the UK’s number one star in the blues rock world. The girl with the big voice from the Black Country has toured extensively around the world and released critically acclaimed albums, gaining a global fanbase and playing alongside some of her musical idols. Joanne’s debut album White Sugar first opened the door and Joanne’s career has since gone stratospheric, with her breaking the notoriously hard-to-crack US market. She beat the stereotypes of her age and gender, gaining acclaim from critics and peers alike. Subsequent albums; Diamonds in the Dirt, Almost Always Never and Songs From The Road followed and saw Joanne’s fan base rise globally.
22
In 2014, Joanne reunited with her White Sugar album producer Jim Gaines and recorded her new studio album in Memphis. That album entitled The Dirty Truth was a return to Joanne’s original sound that mixes rock riffs with blues influences. The album was released in the UK in September 2014 on Joanne’s own independent boutique label Axehouse Records to critical acclaim across the world and has already become her biggest selling album to date.

Eight interesting, funny and quirky things you can do on the council’s website
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website receives millions of visits a year and is often the first port of call for residents seeking information, advice and guidance on a variety of subjects and one of the main ways of accessing a number of services delivered by the local authority. As well as promoting some of the more obvious council duties, such as highways maintenance and waste and recycling, the website can also turn out some interesting, funny and quirky results. Councillor Jonathan Owen, deputy leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Some of council’s work is clear to our residents and the communities we serve, such as libraries and leisure centres, but we are also undertake other tasks which don’t immediately spring to mind and our website is an excellent place to find out more about these.” Here are eight of the more ‘unusual’ things you can do at www.eastriding.gov.uk

Graham Stuart MP (Continued from Page 4) Under the new national funding formula announced by the Education Secretary, Hull and East Riding schools will benefit by an additional £14 million a year by 2019/20, helping to address the longstanding unfairness in the current arrangements. Under the last Labour Government the school funding system degenerated into a postcode lottery which bears little or no relation to pupil need, and pupils in Beverley and Holderness lost out as a result. The most important element in schools is the quality of teaching and this extra funding will allow local schools to recruit, reward and retain the best teachers. It’s an important breakthrough. Locally, I have been campaigning intensively with local patient groups in support of keeping the Minor Injuries Units in Beverley, Withernsea and Hornsea open in the face of restructuring plans published by East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group. I believe the changes being considered will leave constituents in Hornsea and Withernsea more vulnerable and will increase the pressure on both Yorkshire Ambulance Service and A&E at Hull Royal Infirmary. I want to thank the 8,200 constituents who signed the “Save Our MIU” petition opposing the CCG’s plans. Earlier this month I presented this to the CCG together with representatives of the Hornsea Hospital League of Friends, the Withernsea and District Health Forum and East Riding councillors. I am also deeply appreciative of the many hundreds of people who have attended the rallies held in Beverley, Hornsea and Withernsea throughout the year.

local villages and encouraging all parish councils to obtain defibrillators.
Meanwhile I continue to keep the pressure on Yorkshire Ambulance Service to tackle the issue of unacceptable response times in rural Holderness. I held crunch talks with YAS Chief Executive Rod Barnes in September and demanded urgent improvement in terms of the level of cover for mid Holderness in particular, where many of the problems lie. One challenge that must definitely be addressed is that of ensuring A&E at the Hull Royal Infirmary processes new patients being brought to them by ambulance as swiftly as possible, to ensure ambulances are released back into service to help other people. It’s also vital that ambulances from Holderness aren’t held in the Hull area after dropping patients off but are returned to rural stations. I will receive the next set of six monthly data on response times early in the New Year and I will provide an update on progress.
You can get the latest news on the situation by becoming a member of the Facebook group www.facebook.com/ saveourmiu. Please also have your say by writing in to the consultation that runs until the middle of January. I’ve prepared a draft letter which you can either sign and send in, or use as the basis of the letter you want to write. Copies of that letter were delivered across the whole constituency. Continuing the health theme, my Humberside Emergency Ambulance Response Times (HEART) campaign remains central to my work. Public Access Defibrillators save lives and I hope to see one installed in every community in Beverley and Holderness, with as many people as possible trained in how to use one and everybody knowing where they are. Much of my effort here is designed to promote awareness of the excellent work done by local fundraisers, highlighting what communities can achieve. I held the “Tour de Tickton” at the end of the summer, celebrating the great work of volunteers and showing people where new defibrillators in and around the village can be found. In November, I was delighted that East Riding Council passed a motion promoting the “How To” Guide I have produced for
Other important topics for 2017 include delivering on the ambitious River Hull Integrated Catchment Strategy (RHICS) – the £45 million programme of works to reduce flood risk in Holderness – and ensuring that Hull’s year as UK City of Culture is the greatest possible success. I’m enormously grateful for the privilege of serving as your MP and being able to champion the interests of Beverley and Holderness in Westminster. Best wishes, and have a healthy & prosperous 2017 - Graham GRAHAM STUART MP Member for Beverley & Holderness 9 Cross Street, Beverley, HU17 9AX Telephone: 01482 679687 email: graham@grahamstuart.com www.grahamstuart.com

Focus on family fun ...

The start of a New Year and what have you got planned for your travels? Taking the family with multi generations travelling together is a popular idea, especially to celebrate milestone birthdays & anniversaries. Here are a few suggestions. Efteling Theme Park: a super park for mixed generation groups having its own fabulous 4 star hotel steps from the park gate allowing you to come and go as you wish. The gardens are fantastic and there is everything from fairy tale experiences to the most daring of roller coasters! The great plus is that it is the 3rd largest theme park in Europe, offering excellent quality and yet very gentle on your pocket. Travelling overnight by North Sea Ferries it is then just over an hours coach journey from the port, which makes it a comfortable way for any age to travel, although flying is a possibility. Last year we organised a family of 22 guests, spanning four generations, to celebrate a diamond wedding anniversary ~ Every one had a superb time. Lapland to visit Santa: now on sale for this coming December. Natalie & Lynne in the office have booked to travel from Humberside just for the day, they are so excited I am not sure how they will get through the year! Flying from Humberside on Saturday 23rd December, this magical day just before the big event includes a private family meeting with Santa, a reindeer sleigh ride, a taster husky experience and snowmobile adventure. You do not need to worry about the clothing as thermal suits & boots are supplied for your visit. The cost is £499 and if you book quickly there are limited free & half price child places! Longer experiences are also available, for further information please ask. Cruising can be perfect for families too! Enjoying activities and shore excursions to suit yourself, then getting together as a full family each evening to enjoy a meal together and discuss the days events. NCL, Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O, Cunard plus Carnival all have superb facilities for children whilst still offering enjoyment tailored for the more mature years. Alternatively you could consider a luxury private yacht around the Greek islands (up to 12 guests) or a relaxing canal barge? For a family or a group of friends this is a wonderful experience, you can even design your own itinerary on the Yachts! Both myself & Lynne have personally been on more than 160 ships each plying the oceans, rivers & seas of the world from just 12 guests to 5300 on the worlds biggest ship. London taking in a show, Disney in Paris or Florida, Mauritius with its wonderful beaches & superb quality family & sport resorts. The list goes on…. Let us create your special memories for 2017. We are a full travel agency booking all tour operators and always on call night and day to ensure everything runs smoothly for your well earned break. Marion

Cold Weather Update With warnings of a cold snap you may be concerned that some of your garden plants, which have shown signs of growth, may be damaged. Here is some advice from our horticultural team on how to best protect your plants. Even in mild areas, tender plants that cannot be left outside with protection should really be taken into the greenhouse or conservatory when there is risk of a cold snap. In cold areas, you are best moving things inside much earlier, in the autumn. Any tender lants that are being over wintered outdoors need protective straw or fleece. In cold spells, protect non frost-proof containers (terracotta pots for example) with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece, to prevent them cracking. Grouping the pots close to a south-facing wall may provide additional protection to the most vulnerable ones. Protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from cold winds and frosts, which can loosen and lift the roots. Gently re-firm them in if you notice this problem, and erect a temporary netting windbreak if there is no natural shelter. Thick dry mulches will protect the roots from cold, and branches can be covered with fleece, or even packed with dry straw and then covered with fleece, for tender plants. A wooden frame with clear polythene stretched over it does a similar job for evergreens without blocking the light, but don’t let the polythene touch the leaves, as condensation could freeze or cause rots. If you find that some plants are damaged by frosts etc, then they may well need a bit of a boost when they regrow in spring. We recommend mulching with compost and using fertiliser such as Incredibloom etc as this will help the plants when they need it. In the flower garden l Prune your Wisteria plant now, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. l Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches. l You can plant bare root roses now in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour.
l If your garden is looking a bit bare try growing a winter-flowering evergreen Clematis such as ‘Winter Beauty’. To find out how to prune Clematis take a look at our Clematis pruning guide. l For a more unusual bare-root plant to add to your borders now, try growing Alstroemeria (Peruvian Lily). l Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. l Cut down the old stems of perennial plants like Sedum - be careful of any new growth. l Remove old Hellebore leaves to make the new blooms more visible as they emerge this spring. l Cut back damaged, diseased and the oldest stems of brightly coloured willows, and thin overcrowded stems. l Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed. In the vegetable garden l Harvest parsnips and leeks. l If you’d like to grow early peas, place a cloche over the soil to let it warm up for a few weeks prior to sowing. l While you’re waiting for the weather to warm up, try growing your own mushrooms using one of our mushroom kits indoors. l Start chitting (sprouting) early potatoes - stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place in a bright cool frost-free place l You can start growing potatoes in containers under cover for a very early crop ( Charlotte potatoes are a good variety for this). Potato Patio Planters are ideal for growing early potatoes in small spaces. l If your greenhouse is unheated, protect your potato grow bags with horticultural fleece on cold nights. l Remove yellowing leaves from your winter brassicas as they are no use to the plant and may harbour pests and diseases.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
New Year, New You!
I love New Year’s resolutions. It’s a great time of year to really look at your life and see what you could do better. This year I am pledging to do more exercise and to eat more healthily. I sometimes forget to eat during the day if I’m too busy, which clearly isn’t good for me, so I have a plan to make myself a packed lunch every day so I don’t have to stop to prepare something or pop to the shop for a sandwich if I don’t have time. I am also putting aside specific times during the week for keeping fit. I am starting with 3 days a week and seeing how that goes and will increase the time if I can! What are you going to do? It can be absolutely anything. The main thing is to not set yourself up for failure. Think of something manageable that you can easily slot into your week. It might be spending more time with your family (which is always on my agenda!) or just doing something every week that helps someone else. 38 Whatever it is, good luck!
City of Culture is finally here!
Well, we’ve been waiting and waiting, but it’s finally here. I am so excited about Hull’s year as UK City of Culture. It’s going to bring so many people to our region who will be spending money in local businesses and staying in our hotels and B&Bs. They will get the opportunity to see everything good about Hull and East Yorkshire and experience the beauty of the surrounding countryside and coastline. I know the organising committee has been hard at work to create some wonderful memories for everyone. So don’t forget to get involved, take the opportunity to see the cultural highlights of the city and give a warm welcome to our visitors, who will hopefully come back time and time again once they see what’s here and meet all you wonderful people! You can do and be anything you want! I found this great quote and thought I’d share it with you at the beginning of 2017. It’s from multi award-winning country singer and songwriter Brad Paisley. “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one!”
