Graham Stuart MP: Visits Beverley Citizens Advice Bureau A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit the Citizens Advice Bureau at 100 Lairgate in Beverley. I was given a tour by manager Yvonne Kurvits and got to meet her team of dedicated volunteer advisers, who give back so much to our local community. As your local MP a substantial amount of my work involves assisting constituents with their enquiries and problems, and I have huge admiration for all the CAB’s 21,000 advisers across the country.

4

People can find themselves facing a wide range of difficulties covering issues like consumer rights, healthcare, housing, tax, debt and welfare and it’s really important that they have a free and confidential service to turn to in time of need.

Drop-in sessions at the Citizens Advice Bureau are run on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10am and 4pm. Taking on this work can be very challenging but the CAB advisers I spoke to were at pains to emphasise that they also find it very rewarding. Beverley is very lucky to have this resource.

Graham Stuart MP pictured outside Beverley Citizens Advice Bureau with the team at 100 Lairgate, Beverley. The CAB would welcome people interested in joining their vital service. Key skills include the ability to understand complex information, being a good listener and being familiar with keyboard skills and the internet. A good level of literacy and numeracy is also essential. You can find out more about becoming a CAB adviser at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/about-us/support-us/ volunteering/. The Property Column

Making my money work as hard as I do!

In our office, there was conversation about the purchase of an investment property as the buyer stated ‘I want my money to work as hard as I do !!’ This individual had already started the process by talking to an agent who is not only an estate agent but also an established letting agent. There are many suggested areas to consider when making the decision to invest in property. You will need to think about your budget and how much money you can commit to buying a property to rent. To ensure the property complies with current legislation e.g. gas safety legislation, CO2 and smoke alarms requirements these can incur additional costs.

6

If you pay too much you may not have the money to renovate and make the property appeal to your tenants.

A good agent will be able to provide knowledge of the tenant requirements. For example, a relatively low cost improvement in the kitchen and bathroom can enhance the property from a tenant’s perspective. Another important factor to consider is your potential tenants and their requirements. Proximity to schools are typically a requirement for families, whilst transport links appeals to professionals. Deciding which kind of tenant is best for you can help you determine what kind of property to buy and where to buy it. Central is the need for your property to stand out and appeal to your clients. A discounted rent is not always enough, ensuring the house is clean, damp free and of an acceptable decorative standard are all vital. During the viewings stages try and view the property from your client perspective. For example, if targeting families is the bathroom big enough or is there a second toilet. Or if looking to target professional is there room for car parking, even is means laying a court yard to cater for a parking space. It is only sensible to consider the potential negative points of investing in an investment property. For example, whist interest rates are very low, if you had a mortgage could the potential rent cover an interest rate rise? Are you able to plan for the void periods when the property is empty? What about the changes in tax? However, by considering these points costs can be anticipated and planned. The above article outlines the key points which as a potential investor you might need to consider. However as raised at the start of the piece the first and vital step is to talk to an estate agent but also an established letting agent, they will be able to guide you through the process. Until next month take care.

Residents offered chance to get market-leading rates for home energy Residents are being offered exclusive market-leading rates* for home energy thanks to the power of collective energy switching. East Riding of Yorkshire Council teamed up with technology partner iChoosr, the UK’s leading expert in collective energy switching, in 2013 and has been able to deliver savings of £3.5million so far for East Riding residents. The average saving at the most recent auction for dual fuel customers was £250 per year. Residents who register before the next auction, which is taking place on 14 February, will receive a personal offer letter or email letting them know how much they could save against their current deal. There is no obligation for people to accept their personal offer but, if they do, it is easy to make the switch and the new provider will take care of the whole process. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We are seeing East Riding residents make real savings on their energy bills. “YORSwitch is open to everyone. More than 14,000

10

households have now switched energy suppliers with the council’s support, it’s easy and safe. Once registered, there is no obligation to take up an offer so there is nothing to lose.” To help as many residents as possible to save on their energy bills, residents can still register after the auction has taken place. These customers will also receive a personal offer; by e-mail or by post. The winning supplier’s offer will be available until 28 March and residents can go online at eastriding.gov.uk/ yorswitch and receive an instant quote. Auctions happen throughout the year, with the next round starting again on 4 April. Residents are encouraged to register for every auction as offers are always changing. TALES FROM THE TREASURE HOUSE FEBRUARY FEVERS Are you still trying to overcome that lingering cough or cold from the New Year, which just won’t go away in spite of all the medicines money can buy? Well, if you were to walk into your local archives instead of the local chemists, you would find one or two remedies that are nowhere to be seen on the high street.

14

Within the collections of the East Riding Archives can be found a small number of ‘cures’ for coughs and colds from the 19th century. However, anyone who thinks they might like to try one out should beware; these remedies contain the sort of ingredients you don’t want to meddle with! For example, in the papers of the Turner Family of North Ferriby is a remedy for ‘feverish colds’, which prescribes a concoction of ‘Spirit of Mindererus’, ‘Antimonial Wine’, and ‘Sweet Spirit of Nitre’. If a patient took just a little too much of these ingredients it would have had drastic effects such as faintness, nausea, powerful vomiting, severe diarrhoea, ‘nervous derangement’, severe muscle weakness, and ultimately death. It should be noted that these cold remedies are being highlighted merely for their curiosity factor. Some of the ingredients mentioned in these archives are potentially lethal.

The remedy for ‘feverish colds’ states: “Half an ounce of Spirit of Mindererus in one ounce of water, twenty drops of Anti-monial Wine and one teaspoonful of sweet spirit of nitre, taken at Bed time will generally promote perspiration; this dose is for an adult and may be repeated for two or three nights at Bed time. The nitre may be omitted where it does not agree.” According to www.the-familydoctor.com , ‘Spirit of Mindererus’ is “a liquor or solution of ammonium acetate, which promotes perspiration”. ‘Antimonial wine’ is according to chestofbooks.com, “prepared by dissolving tartar emetic in sherry wine” and , if taken in overdose, can cause “faintness, nausea, followed by powerful and continued vomiting, severe diarrhoea, constriction and burning sensation in throat, cramps, or spasmodic twitching, nervous derangement, and can often lead to death.” And ‘Nitre’ is a “pale yellow liquid, fragrant smell, pungent taste. Appears to have been known as early as the 15th century, if not before. It’s a nervous stimulant…Known to have caused death. Dosage should be administered with great caution…Relieves cough, hoarseness, irritation of throat” (Source: chestofbooks.com) People can read the documents that contain these so-called ‘cures’ for coughs and colds by visiting the Research Room in the Treasure House, in Champney Road, Beverley.

Local News for Parents

Hull & East Riding Mumbler News The year of Hull being UK City of Culture is well and truly underway and so far what I’ve seen and been to I’ve been very impressed by. There are some great things coming up that are definitely worth going into Hull to do and see.

16

The year is being split into four ‘seasons’, the first of which is Season 1, ‘Made in Hull’, running January to March. Here’s a handy list of the events in Season 1 that are especially suitable for children or families: l Look Up – A series of new art installations around the city. We went to see one of them, the Siemens wind turbine blade, being brought into Queen Victoria Square and it was incredible! l Bowhead – A new exhibition at the Hull Maritime Museum in Queen Victoria Square. Bowhead, also known as a Greenland Right Whale, is all about commemorating the cities whaling heritage. Runs to the 19th March. l Creative Voice Dance – A show to showcase new choreographers and performers at Hull Truck Theatre. 29th January 7pm, tickets £3 each. l Back To Ours – during February half term 20th to 26th February there’s lots of family friendly shows across at venues in East, North and West Hull. l Telling Tales: Musical Stories with Narration – a family friendly programme of classical music. 24th February, 1pm at Hull University, tickets £4-£8. l Women of the World – festival of talks, debates, music, film, comedy and activism that celebrates women and girls. 10-12th March, Hull City Hall.

Beverley also gets its share of events!

Wildlife Photographer of The Year. This exhibition is on loan from the London Natural History Museum at will be shown at Beverley Art Gallery from 11th February to 22nd April, free admission. For full details of all of these events see the City of Culture website at https://www.hull2017.co.uk/whatson/events/

The Hull Museums also have lots of free children’s workshops and activities running in Season 1 that are worth checking out, you can find them all on the Mumbler website Events Calendar http://hullandeastriding. mumbler.co.uk/events/ With it being a new year a lot of parents have a change of routine or just want to find new things to do. I’ve been to check out 2 new children’s classes in Beverley recently, both actually at the same venue - Molescroft Pavilion! I like this venue for activities, with the option of going into the park or on the field outside before or after. We’ve had a couple of kid’s parties there too recently and it also makes a great party venue. The first class we tried out was Rugby Tots, they run classes for boys and girls ages 2-7 on a Sunday morning. My 2 year old daughter tried out the younger class and my 5 year old son the older class and they both really enjoyed them. There was a mix of fun and games, skills and a game of tag rugby at the end. For more details call Samantha Robinson on 07732 761048 or email robo@rugbytots.co.uk

I also took my 2 year old to try out My Baby Can Dance on a Saturday morning. These are fun dance classes suitable for boys and girls aged 12 months to 3 and a half years running across Hull and East Yorkshire, this is a new class for Beverley run by Sam Owen Smith. It was a mix of dance, movement and great music whilst also being structured and educational. My daughter really got into this and was loving pretending to be various animals and joining in with the songs. For more information on these call on 07495 856993 or email sam.mbcd@gmail.com If you’ve found a new local class please drop me a line so I can go and check it out! For more ideas of places to go and things to do locally with children this winter check out the Hull & East Riding Mumbler website at www.hullandeastriding.mumbler.co.uk

New York has to be the top spot for new bookings for this year. We are doing at least one booking a day at the moment ,mainly for travelling at the end of the year, when the city is decorated for Christmas. There is a great selection of central hotels around Times Square and Grand Central Station just as well priced as those further out. Don’t delay start booking today. If you have seen New York and are looking for another city break across the pond don’t dismiss Boston or Philadelphia, both offer lower taxes on shopping. Chicago, Toronto or Montreal are all east coast & exciting places to visit too. All of these destinations are reachable from Humberside over Amsterdam and most have a direct service from Manchester. Australian Islands… did you see Martin Clunes travelling around? I was really taken with Norfolk Island, 900 miles off Australia’s coast, my thoughts were I would love to visit but the chances are slim! Well I popped it on my BOOK IT LIST and yes it has come up trumps and I am going. I could not believe my luck when I saw a cruise to the South Sea Islands sailing in November 2018, ticking off so many new destinations for me. If you would like to join me on this special or have more information please do not hesitate to contact me. Iceland… with many organised tours for this spring being full don’t despair if you are wanting to make a last minute booking. We can tailor make you a financially secure visit to including the Geysers, Waterfalls, Blue Lagoon and a tour to search for the Northern Lights on a date to suit you. The super thing in Iceland is that if the evening tour to the Northern Lights does not operate due to cloudy skies they simply book you for the next night in the hopes that you do get to see them before your return! Iceland is an amazing place for a break with or without the Northern Lights. Tailor Made Travel - you are probably thinking of Australia, New Zealand, North America and the Far East which are regularly sought after. Does India, Bhutan, Nepal and other area’s of South Asia spring to mind? If not and you do enjoy doing your own thing we can organise private tours & can offer amazing and very different itineraries to these areas that you may not have considered or think a possibility. All tailored to suit your time and budget. Travel could fill many pages as the list goes on & on…. When you are looking to get away, let us create your special memories for 2017. Insurance for Beverley Since the recent closure of the Swinton office in Beverley there is no longer an insurance broker on the high street in Beverley. Using a broker is a proven way of obtaining consistently good prices for your insurance year after year and so it is a great loss for the market town. Since the closure, the nearest high street insurance broker’s office is Hedon Insurance at 97 King Street, Cottingham. The firm has recently opened its new, larger office in response to higher numbers of clients from Cottingham and Beverley and the

villages in between rediscovering the attraction of a friendly face to face service when arranging insurance for their homes, vehicles and business risks. ‘We have certainly seen an increase in customer numbers from Beverley in recent months but we’d be delighted to see more. We’re very close to the Cottingham bus terminal and the railway station – so easily accessible for potential customers from Beverley’ points out Cottingham Manager, Richard Atkin ‘And, if they take out a policy and can produce their ticket, I’ll knock it off the price!’ Hedon Insurance has been trading for almost 50 years and has offices in Hedon, Hull and Hornsea – as well as Cottingham. Local Music

Stepping out of the Shadows East Riding singer-songwriter Martin Peirson is about to release his debut CD of songs – at the age of sixty! The album ‘Shadows & Candlelight’ will be launched at a live show on Friday 17 February at Kardomah 94, Alfred Gelder Street, Hull. The performance, timed to be part of Hull’s City of Culture year, will include many of the musicians that feature on the album.

32

Some years back Martin wrote for himself or bands he was involved with including ‘Diggory Venn’ before becoming more involved with music promotion. He recently stepped down from organising ‘The Processed Pea’ venue based at Etton near Beverley - which still continues to operate. With more time on his hands he began writing songs again which directly led to this album. A love of live performance was also rekindled when he found himself occasionally playing alongside Henry Priestman as part of the backing band known as the ‘Men of a Certain Age’. With Beverley-based musician Peter Robinson Martin has recorded the new material at Robinson’s Setter Studio allowing Peter a free hand with his production skills. Initially just the two of them provided instrumentation, but as new songs came to light that hinted at a bigger sound they began to enlist help from other singers and musicians that Martin knows. These were either done at the studio itself, or via the internet. Contributions from further afield included trumpet parts from Paul Liddell in Sunderland, foot percussion from Le Vent du Nord in Quebec, and pedal steel guitar from BJ Cole in London. BJ has played the instrument on many hit records including Andy Fairweather-Low’s ‘Wide Eyed and Legless’ and Elton

chosen as Artist of the Week.

John’s ‘Tiny Dancer.’ Other contributions came from locally connected singers and musicians including Henry Priestman, Katie Spencer, Hugh Whitaker, Tony Underwood, Dez Allenby, Nick Rooke, Keith ‘Ched’ Cheeseman and many more. A taster single ‘IN YOUR DREAMS’ had local radio airplay including twicedaily airings on Beverley FM when Martin was

Shadows & Candlelight is an album Martin is proud of, with its quirky songs and interesting arrangements that reveal more on each hearing. He added “It’s not a career thing – in fact it’s taken me sixty years to do this. I enjoy playing as and when, and sharing songs-simple as that. It’s been great just slowly putting this together over the months, treating each song differently and trying to go interesting places with each.” The album will be available from Martin’s website www.martinpeirson.co.uk, Minster Records, Eastgate in Beverley and at the forthcoming launch. The performance will include Martin’s occasional band ‘The Runaway Train’ comprising Peter Robinson, Hugh Whitaker, Dez Allenby and Tony Underwood, PLUS many of the other singers and musicians that contributed to the album. Tickets (£5) are available now from www.hullboxoffice. com and Kardomah 94.

“The songs are simple without being over-simplistic, lots of melodic hooks & catchy lyrics.” Rod Clements (Lindisfarne) “It has variety and personality.” Barbara Dickson

High demand for new care home Bookings strong with Claremont House on track for Spring opening A new 73-bed care home in Beverley is taking reservations ahead of its opening in March and staff are working to support families at other facilities in the area which are closing. Crown Care has recruited an experienced management team and is currently interviewing for up to 100 staff at its purpose-built Claremont House care home on the site of the former Victoria Pub. Demand for both jobs and residential places has been high. The team is working closely with families at nearby Molescroft, which is set to close, and the local authority to facilitate moves once Claremont House is open.

34

Denise Stephenson, Managing Director (Yorkshire) of Crown Care said: “We have had a significant level of interest in Claremont House and have already started taking bookings for our suites. “We expect to have around 100 staff and are currently interviewing. We would welcome more applications from nursing and care assistants. “Of course, we are saddened to learn of the closure of any care home and will do everything we can to try and help – whether it be taking on staff who lose their posts or providing a home for displaced residents.

“Crown Care is confident in the business model we have for Claremont House having done a detailed analysis of the area’s needs and the level of interest we have seen backs this up.” Claremont House will have a total of 73 bedrooms with en-suite wetrooms and facilities will include a rooftop café and terrace, a licensed bar, cinema, beauty therapy and hair salon. There will be variety of lounges and three restaurants, with residents able to invite family and guests to dine with them. Menus will be created by experienced chefs to provide nutritious meals to suit all manner of tastes, appetites and special dietary requirements. There will be a wide range of daily activities on offer with opportunities for social interaction with like-minded people. “Residents will be individually assessed to provide the best and most appropriate personal care for their needs,” said Denise. “Our medical centre will be equipped to accommodate people with high levels of health and personal care needs. The memory impairment facility will provide accommodation that has been tastefully and sympathetically designed to offer a safe, secure and stimulating environment for people who may have varying degrees of memory impairment. “Most importantly of all, we are looking to deliver the best quality environment the region has to offer while providing the highest possible standards of care to ensure those who come to live here or stay with us for a short time get the care, attention and lifestyle they deserve.” Claremont marketing suite, on site, is open 10am – 4pm Mon - Fri and families are urged to book early to avoid disappointment. Call Jennie Falconer on 07833 291973 or email Claremont@crowncaregroup.co.uk for details.

Gardening

February Gardening There’s always something to be doing in the garden, whether it’s pruning, tidying or sowing, so we’ve put together our top gardening tasks for February. Top 10 jobs this month l Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover l Chit potato tubers l Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches l Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off l Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering l Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those that need planting ‘in the green’ l Prune Wisteria l Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges l Prune conservatory climbers such as bougainvillea l Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter, remove dead grass from evergreen grasses

36

General maintenance Check tree ties and stakes. Replace, tighten or slacken them where necessary.

Tie up splayed out branches on conifers that have become damaged by the weight of snow or by strong winds.

Firm back newly planted trees and shrubs if they have been lifted by frost heave or by strong winds.

Remove weeds from around the bases of young trees.

Check protective coverings on newly planted or borderline hardy trees, shrubs and climbers, to ensure they remain secure until the risk of frost has passed. If the weather is warm, you may need to start mow. Set the cutting height at its maximum, and only mow when the grass is dry.

Re-cut lawn edges to crisp up the appearance of the garden and save work later in the season.

Turf can be laid, provided the soil is not too wet or frosty. Work from planks, to avoid compacting the soil. Do not walk on the newly laid turf and leave undisturbed for several weeks to allow new roots to establish.

Prepare seed beds for new lawns to be seeded later in the spring, but only attempt this if the ground is not too wet.

Dahlia tubers stored over winter (or bought this year) can be started into growth. Place them in a light, warm place to sprout before planting. They will need additional misting with a spray-bottle of water, to stop them drying out. Dahlia ‘Karma Chocolate’.

Lily bulbs can be planted in pots, for flowers this summer. After growing on indoors or in a cool greenhouse, they can be moved onto the patio when in flower, so that you can enjoy the blooms.

Bulbs coming up in the rock garden or in containers may benefit from overhead protection from the rain and snow. A sheet of glass or Perspex placed on piles of bricks will do the job.

Hardy annuals can be sown in pots or modules to provide colour.

Summer-flowering Dutch iris bulbs can be forced and used as cut flowers.

Place gladiolus corms in seed trays or boxes and place in a light, warm (around 10ºC/50ºF) spot to encourage them to sprout before planting. This will ensure an earlier display.

Sweet peas can be sown under cloches, in a cold frame, or in a cool room in the house. Any sweet peas that were sown earlier in the autumn can now be potted.

Root cuttings can be taken of Papaver (perennial poppies), Verbascum (mullein), Acanthus (bear’s britches) and Phlox.

Check on tender plants overwintering outdoors to ensure protective coverings are still in place

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

How are your New Year’s resolutions doing?

We’re only a few weeks into the New Year really, whether you’re reading this at the end of January or during February, and I know that it seems like a long time ago now! But I am amazed at how many people have told me that they never expected to keep their New Year’s resolutions. What’s the point of making them then? Is it because they think of any resolution as just being part of a wish list rather than something that is actually possible? Something that’s just a bit of fun? Are they setting themselves up to fail because they’re not identifying achieveable goals? Well, don’t worry if you’re one of those people who thinks what they want to happen never will. Why not, instead, consider the New Year (and it’s not that old yet!) as an opportunity to change something in your life? So don’t give up on your resolution just yet, no matter what it is! If it seems insurmountable, break it down into smaller segments and take one step at a time. Anything is possible if you approach it in the right way and have the right mindset. So whether you want to lose a few stone, stop smoking, spend more time with 38 your family or put £10 into a savings account every week to help with next Christmas, I refer you to the immortal words of Yoda (!) - “Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.” Truly, these are words to live by!

Quality carriers - is it too much to ask? I absolutely love the fact that we are all buying reuseable bags for our shopping and I don’t think many of us mind paying up to 50p depending on how big or strong the bag is - and as long as we remember to get them out of the boot of our cars before we go in! I’m sure you’ve noticed that some shops have actually improved the quality of their 5p bags since we’ve been buying them - and I commend them for it. But I do object when shops charge you for a carrier bag when it’s so flimsy a finger of fudge would probably break it. They are quite clearly never meant to be reused! Is it just me who has a problem with this? Surely not!
