Graham Stuart MP:

Stepping up my community defibrillator campaign Regular readers will be aware of my long-running campaign to improve the availability of Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) in Beverley and Holderness. I am proud to have seen dozens of new units installed across the area, and have even heard accounts of these crucial machines already saving lives in our community. Yet there is always more to do. That is why I am hosting a conference this month, which will bring together the emergency services, local fundraisers and council representatives to create a strategy that will improve

awareness and increase availability of PADs. I want to see a defibrillator in at least every town and village across Beverley and Holderness, and a generation of school leavers who are trained to perform resuscitation and use PADs. Evidence from other countries, such as Denmark, shows this can dramatically improve survival rates from cardiac arrests. I am pleased, therefore, to be bringing together organisations such as the British Heart Foundation and Yorkshire Ambulance Service in order to create a unified strategy for community defibrillators. I also look forward to welcoming key local supporters such as N.U.R.S.E., the HEY Smile Foundation and members of the Tickton Defibrillator Campaign. I am delighted that so many residents and businesses have responded to my campaign and installed a unit already, as I am aware of the challenges we face in across a large and predominantly The community dance programme is for young people from Year 5 upwards. A range of dance styles, from contemporary to urban dance is offered at a venue near you. It aims to provide young people with little or no previous dance experience, a fun, energetic and inspiring opportunity to develop both their dance technique and creative dance skills. The sessions will focus on building strength and fitness along with the creation of an original piece of dance which will be performed at

Readers will also be aware of my efforts to improve the response times of local ambulances, and I hope that this, along with more public access defibrillators, will help to save many more lives. Finally, I will be supporting European Restart a Heart Day on 16th October, and I am glad to hear that hundreds of pupils across East Yorkshire will be taking part in demonstrations and awareness courses put on by the British Heart Foundation and Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Tips for buying property abroad A guide to the things you need to consider if you’ve always wanted to buy a holiday home abroad.. If you are looking to find a home in the sun, France, Spain and Portugal remain firm favourites, although some will, of course, set their sights much further afield. Crucially, if you are tempted to dip a toe into the foreign property market in the hope of bagging yourself a bargain, you need to be aware that the process is complex. When buying overseas, there

House & Home Do your research Don’t forget to spend time checking out local facilities, such as the shops, restaurants – and potentially the coast. Also ensure there are good transport links to the main cities and airports.

Get your finances in order When spending hefty sums on an overseas property, it’s vital to get the finance right.

Having decided where you want to live, you then need to decide what kind of property you want. That might, for example, be an apartment in a block with access to a beach and a pool, or a remote cottage in the middle of the countryside. At the same time, you need to decide exactly why you are buying: is the property for holiday use, retirement or investment. And are you going to rent out the property – or live there yourself?

Work out what you can afford You still need to sit down and work out carefully exactly what you can afford to buy in your chosen location, as you don’t want to end up over-stretching yourself.

You also need to be sure you can There might, for example, be actually afford the property after extra fees to cover the upkeep of you’ve bought it. communal areas, such as a shared pool or gardens.

The simplest option may be to fund the purchase by raising funds based on equity you have in your UK property or other assets. Alternatively, you may need to take out a mortgage. Continued on page 10

In more tried-and-tested markets, such as France, Spain and Portugal, you may be able to take out a mortgage in the local currency. In newer markets you will probably be limited to raising finance on other assets in the UK.

Factor in all the costs As well as the mortgage, make sure you allow for transaction costs, including stamp duty, legal fees, taxes and insurance. In Spain, for example, the transfer tax, notary fees and other costs can potentially add another 10% to the purchase price.

Take care when transferring money When purchasing abroad, you need to be aware of the fact you will be exposed to exchange rate movements. With this in mind, it is worth using the services of a foreign exchange company. These firms will offer “forward contracts enabling you to lock into the exchange rate for up to

12 months in advance. This means you can protect yourself from currency fluctuations. At the same time, the rates on offer from currency specialists are also likely to be a lot more competitive than those offered by the high-street banks.

Understand the responsibility Before signing on the dotted line, make sure you are ready for the commitment of owning a property in a foreign country. Make sure you do all the preparation you can. Talk to agents, locals and holidaymakers in your chosen area so you fully understand the market, and spend as much time as possible getting to know the language and the culture.

PROPERTY COLUMN ‘We certainly use Martin & Co for Lets but what can you tell us about Sales’? Recently in the office someone commented that ‘We certainly use Martin & Co for Lets but what can you tell us about Sales’? Typically, some agents will wait until you have signed the contract and wait for buyers. It is vital that the sales process is proactive chasing potential vendors. You have decided to sell your home and the time spent ‘on the market’ can seem like an eternity. This can be a stressful time and although viewings might be taking place, an offer that you hoped for, is not always forthcoming. At the start of the process to get the vital ‘Sold’ status there are important considerations. Although price changes might be necessary, if the price is set correctly in the first place this should reduce the need. When determining the price there are several factors. These typically include the availability of similar properties, age and condition of the property plus the amount you need to purchase your next house. Price can also be used as a marketing tool with terms like ‘offers over an amount’. Regular reviews of the what is on the market i.e. competition plus what has recently sold is essential. If for example, after 8 weeks despite a number of viewings, no offers have been made then it might be worth considering a price reduction. As previous articles have suggested ‘those little jobs which never get done’, might put potential buyers off. Unless you are targeting buyers, who want a project, try to refresh your home carpets, declutter, decorate areas that are showing wear, plus cleaning all cupboards can aid the presentation and reduce the feeling that the home is a renovation project. Buyers typically want to move in with the minimum of work by aiding the correct presentation, this aims to assist the buyer visualising their furniture in the home. Once the property is on the market, although the viewer might not make an offer it is important to determine their reasoning, A good agent will not only conduct the viewer but importantly will also report back suggestions how to overcome objections. Although making the bedrooms bigger might not be feasible but if the appearance of the bathroom suite has been mentioned several times it might be worth investing to change this. A good agent will be monitoring the overall market conditions as previous months articles highlight ie ‘What is the Sales market doing’, using this knowledge one should be able to develop strategy. For example, there are seasonal trends which influence the market e.g. summer holidays. By keeping aware of these factors, trends upwards and downwards in the market be anticipated resulting in proactive action. In conclusion Martin & Co focus on the range of different factors including price, appearance, using feedback plus market conditions, to help reduce your stress. This enables you to focus on your next move. Until next month take care. Michael Allison, Director of Martin & Co (Beverley)

A relaxing, intimate night of music at the East Riding Theatre with the Candlelight Sessions Beverley’s East Riding Theatre will be hosting its first-ever Candlelight Sessions in its Café Bar, on Sunday 22nd October, offering the audience the chance to get close up to the artist; in an intimate, candlelit, in-theround, and completely unamplified setting. Guest artist is the highlyacclaimed Pete Dilley; a rising singer-songwriter from County Durham with four albums under his belt and impressive CV including playing alongside Chloe Hall & Beth Neilsen Chapman. Influenced by the 60’s folk revival, the audience can expect a plethora of great songwriting and some chosen classics, performed on acoustic guitar, dobro & banjo. The evening will be backed by some top-quality house musicians. Organiser Phil Simpson commented: “This is a chance to be a fly-on-the-wall to a completely ‘off the cuff’ music session; hear some of the most hotly-tipped stars in concert like you’ve never heard them before – or are likely ever to again.” The Sessions kick off at 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased from the Box Office on 01482 874050 or from the theatre’s website – www.eastridingtheatre.co.uk BeverleyMag October 2017

Roy Woodcock’s

World of Wine Brits are a nation of selfproclaimed ‘wine buffs’ Great dinners will often have something great to go with them and the great British staple, the Sunday roast, is no different. However, pairing the right drink with your roast is a little more complex, so here’s some food for thought as you chew your way through the most popular Sunday choices. According to drinks experts writing for website thedrinksbusiness.com: “Most people would automatically think that because chicken is a white meat then that means only a

white wine can be paired with it. Wrong. It may come as a surprise to learn that a light bodied red like a Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais work even better. “However, if red wine isn’t your scene, and you want to stick with white, make sure to pick up a fullbodied Chardonnay or Voignier as their strong presence will complement the chicken’s hearty flavour. “If wine isn’t your thing at all, though, relax, because you can also opt for a blond beer or an English bitter, which will play off the herb and garlic flavours within the roast,” they say. Next up it’s that most staple of British Sunday roasts, beef, and I

must admit I love it cooked really rare. The drinks business experts say: “Contrary to popular belief, a roast beef joint isn’t as strongly flavoured as steak or a burger, meaning that anything medium bodied like, Chianti or Pinot Noir, to full-bodied wines like Syrah/ Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon will all work. “However, a lot can depend on the sauce used. Gravy is rich and heavy, but roast beef is also frequently paired with a lighter jus. For beer, a dark ale or porter is a safe bet.” Pork, however, can “throw a spanner in the works”, they say, as it offers both light and dark meat and a chewy/crunchy crackling. “The instinct here is to plump for a beer first. Crisp European lagers can cut through the fat of the pork as well as cleansing the palate. So beers made using Citra hop would be perfect. For wine, whites that have fl oral, citrus and green fruit notes like Sauvignon or Chenin Blanc are ideal, but for a red a Chianti Classico will cut through the acidity and the fat.” Our final Sunday roast is lamb and the experts say this is perhaps the easiest meat to match with wine or beer. The instinct is to go with a full-bodied red wine to help get the most out of your roast here. Fruit-centric reds from regions in Australia (Cabernet-Merlot or Grenache-Syrah-Mourvédre) and Bordeaux are winners, though Rioja and shiraz won’t let you down either. A lighter dish, like spring lamb, will prompt the use of a Beaujolais, or even a dry rosé, both of which should be lightly chilled. For beer, a dark Belgium beer or a black IPA will ensure maximum results, they say. At the other end of the food/ drink debate, one of the great joys of Port is its extraordinary versatility to complement the most challenging food flavours from salty, blue cheeses to rich chocolate desserts. It’s easy to recognise how the succulent sweet fruit found in Port is such a winning match with cheese; the same can be said about its role with chocolate. Take a young Port like Taylor’s First Estate, with its robust, sweet plum favours, and see how well it complements the sour cherry notes that can often be found in dark chocolate. The bitter

BeverleyMag October 2017

components in the chocolate work well with the sweet fruit in the Port making it a glorious palate match. Taylor’s First Estate is a blend of young red Ports which have been matured for several years in large oak vats. It has a concentrated fruit nose bursting with blackcurrant, plum and liquorice flavours. A luscious, sweet palate is supported by firm tannins and restrained elegance. * Taylor’s First Estate is currently available from Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco at a recommended price of £12 a bottle.

What’s On

Film: Goodbye Christopher Robin The story of how fame affected the creator of Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne, and his son, makes for poignant viewing.

These days we’re only too aware of the pitfalls and pressures that fame can bring – especially when it happens to younger people. Dozens of pop idols, movie stars, catwalk models and footballers have found life too difficult in a permanent spotlight. But this is no new phenomenon. It was equally true 90 years ago, when A.A. Milne wrote the children’s books Winnie the Pooh and House at Pooh Corner, featuring a young boy named Christopher Robin, after his own son – a collection of animal characters inspired by the boy’s stuffed animals (notably Pooh

BeverleyMag October 2017

Bear) and their idyllic adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood. The public went mad for the stories and wanted to see the boy (and his stuffed bear) for themselves, in person. He became a global celebrity, but soon came to dread his fame and the unsettling degree of exposure that came with it. Worse still, it turned the boy against his father, who he felt had allowed it to happen. All this is the subject of an intriguing new film called Goodbye Christopher Robin, which recounts these events and provides some context for them. A.A. Milne, played in the film by Domhnall Gleeson, is portrayed as a man who, having served in the First World War, was plagued by post-traumatic stress. It led him to leave his home in London for a more tranquil life in the East Sussex countryside. Milne dreaded the prospect of Christopher Robin ever undergoing such an experience; he seemed to want him to stay an innocent child.

In the film, the dynamics of the family are complex. Milne’s ambitious wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) helped get the Christopher Robin stories published. But she had little time for the countryside, and often left her husband and son there to enjoy her social life in London. Christopher Robin’s nanny Olive (Kelly Macdonald) comes across as the person he loved most in the world. If his mother was often absent and his father contained his demons by never letting his emotions show, Olive was always there to comfort the little boy.

(Young Will Tilston plays the title role, and looks exactly right as the innocent Christopher Robin.) The film’s director Simon Curtis was intrigued by Frank Cottrell Boyce’s script. “It touched on so many issues... it’s about being a parent and having children and then having to let them go. It’s about England between the wars, which was such a momentous time. And it’s also about the act of creation, writing of one of the most beloved stories ever written.” For his part, Boyce describes A.A. Milne as ‘a cracking writer’: “This is a great story about success and its consequences, which is always an interesting subject. A.A. Milne was phenomenally and unexpectedly successful, which became troubling for him and particularly for his son. We rarely tell stories about how success can make life very diffcult.” Now Showing at

Health & Beauty

Avoid the wrinkles that aren’t down to ageing

City air, the wrong moisturiser and even eating too many biscuits can all give you extra wrinkles.

Your moisturiser only moisturises There are plenty of women who rely on moisturisers such as coconut oil or even Vaseline to keep their skin youthful and supple.

keep it there, they aren’t protecting your skin from the biggest cause of wrinkles – the sun. And this isn’t simply about slapping on sun lotion when you’re on holiday or the golf course, this is something you must incorporate into your daily routine. “I use a cream with a minimum factor of 15 every day,” says makeup artist Emma White-Turle. She recommends either Nivea’s Cellular Anti-Age Facial Day Care (£14.99 for 50ml) or if you’re willing to

Are you unknowingly making these wrinkle causing mistakes?

Yes, you read that right - some foods give you wrinkles! Sugar is your enemy when it comes to youthful-looking skin because it actually weakens the collagen within your skin, making it more wrinkleprone and less elastic too.

You’re a regular in the city Cities such as London have extremely high pollution levels (the city was at its legal limits for polluted air within the first five days of 2017, according to air quality reports) and according to research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, that could mean more skin damage in the form of age spots and wrinkles for you.

Even if you don’t treat yourself to much sugary sweetness, carbohydrates such as white pasta, rice and bread will have a similar effect since they also bind to the collagen and elastin that help keep skin looking youthful. So swap your white carbs for wholegrain and try to avoid sugar altogether.

Of course, if you live in the city it’s difficult to avoid but thankfully you can remove particular matter, the tiny molecules that make up pollution in the air, by cleansing thoroughly when you get home.

You like to party hard Enjoying life will give you some nice laughter lines but overdoing it will give you more wrinkles than you’d like.

BeverleyMag October 2017

Stress produces cortisol which has been shown to increase inflammation – that in turn makes wrinkles more likely. Add to that the fact that when you’re stressed you’re more likely to pull a frown or concentrated facial expression, and you can see why stressed out people might end up with deeper wrinkles than others.

You eat wrinkle-making food

Regular sleep is essential if you want your skin cells to have a chance to regenerate and refresh overnight.

You’re highly strung

But while these kinds of moisturisers might work really well to put moisture into the skin and even

spend more on your skin, Chanel’s Sublimate LA Protection UV (£245 for 50ml).

Using a cream that helps build up your skin’s barrier defence is also useful. Try a mineral-based cream such as Origins Mega-Defence SPF 45 (£30 for 30ml) which will help prevent airborne pollution damage.

Top tips for cycling and running in winter Be seen when out running

Winter runners should pay close attention to what they are wearing, according to Beverley running expert Paul Eaton. Paul suggests wearing a reflective, lightweight, waterproof highvisibility jacket along with a flashing armband.

As the long winter nights approach, it gets increasingly challenging to exercise outside. However, you can still enjoy running and cycling in the cold and wet. Nic Gough consulted some Beverley experts for tips on how to run and cycle safely and enjoyably during the winter months.

Getting your bike ready for winter So you are determined to stay fit over the winter by going out cycling, despite the cold, dark and often wet conditions of the roads and paths. The local cycling club recommend that you make subtle changes to your bike to make it safe to ride. The first thing to do is to reduce tyre pressure slightly because this increases the contact area with the ground and improves your grip. Experts also advise a six-step plan to get your bike winterroadworthy: 1. Clean the drivetrain (the gears, chain and crank set) and then apply a wet lube 2. Fit mudguards if you don’t have any 3. Clean the bike thoroughly after a winter ride 4. Swap your normal tyres for heavier-duty winter tyres (consider tubeless tyres to avoid punctures)

5. Get your bike professionally serviced ahead of winter 6. Ensure your lights work Wearing high-visibility clothing is common sense, of course. It’s also important to wear base layers to keep yourself warm, but not to the point where you are too hot. The local cycling club also advise wearing Merino wool baselayer clothes and a heavier, windproof and waterproof jacket with highvisibility elements. Thermal socks and waterproof gloves are also recommended.

Safety on the road It is vitally important that you have your wits about you when riding in winter. Look further ahead than normal to prepare for hazards. Aim your front wheel at dry patches and sections with more grip and avoid painted road markings and manhole covers. More potholes appear in winter and they can often be concealed by being filled with water. Key safety tips from our Beverley Cycling experts are: • Use only your rear brake in icy conditions with gentle, progressive application • If your bike slides on ice or damp surfaces and starts going sideways, don’t panic. Make small corrections rather than sudden over-steering movements. • All of the products mentioned above are available from the many cycling shops in Beverley also at online cycle stores.

Layered clothing ensures you won’t overheat. A first layer of compression clothing works well, teamed with a hat and gloves, if it is particularly cold. Paul usually wears a neck buff to stay warm and well ventilated. “Always run towards the oncoming traffic so you can take avoiding action if they don’t spot you,” said Paul. “Staying hydrated is as important in winter as it is in summer. Take a small bottle of water because

you will still sweat in the cold, particularly on distances greater than 10km or when you run for more than an hour.” There are also advantages to joining a running club over the winter months. Having others to run with helps motivate you to run in the cold, Paul pointed out. And it’s safer, particularly for women, it’s sociable and you will learn new running routes. Paul added: “Winter is also a good time to cross-train, so it’s worthwhile going to the gym at Beverley Leisure Centre for some calisthenic workouts to strengthen the core or the pool for a swim.”

Health & Wellbeing

Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment Consultation From Monday, 2 October for a period of 60 days, East Riding Health and Wellbeing Board (HWBB) will be consulting with the public about a review of the pharmaceutical needs of the community. The HWBB will gather opinions about a draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) document – due to be published on 1 April 2018. The PNA will look at the current services provided by pharmacies and also help identify any potential gaps in service delivery. It will be used by NHS England when making decisions on whether to approve applications to open new pharmacies and will help to maintain the adequacy

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for transforming lifestyles at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, added: “Our community’s pharmacies are valued by our residents and offer vital health resources. “The general community is invited to have a say as part of the consultation and it is important that residents of East Riding know where to go and who to contact for more information.” To have your say on the PNA or get more information on this and previous PNAs visit http:// dataobs. eastriding. gov.uk/pna

of current services.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, chair of the health and wellbeing board, said: “It is a statutory duty for the board to carry out a PNA and we see it as an important process as it affects the availability of the service to all our residents.”

Hard copies of the PNA consultation documents and/ or the survey questions can be requested via nicola.bush@eastriding.gov.uk or owen.morgan@eastriding.gov.uk

Top five celebrity treats

So what are the weird and wonderful beauty treats our celebs can’t do without? 1 Japanese Nightingale Facial – it is reported that Victoria Beckham is a big fan of this skin ‘treat’ in which the droppings from the Japanese Nightingale are mixed with bran and applied to the skin. It’s said to be excellent for treating acne scarring and discolouration of the skin. 2 24-Carat Gold Liquid Facial – a favourite of the Victoria’s Secrets models, it’s said to free the skin of impurities, increase oxygenation and slow down collagen depletion, resulting in a more youthful complexion. And with a price tag in the region of £1000, it certainly lives up to its name. 3 The Vampire Facial – fortunately, this isn’t as gory as it sounds. Both Bar Refaeli and Kim K have had this facial recently, which involves drawing blood from the arm which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets before being put onto skin with acupuncture-style needles. The results are said to be outstanding: fingers crossed us mere mortals get to try it soon... 4 Intraceuticals oxygen machine – normally only found in high-end salons, it’s alleged that Madonna has one of these machines in each of her six homes! It works by a process of hyaluronic layering - a non-invasive method that uses hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate the skin and help make fine lines and saggy skin disappear. 5 The Bottled Water bath – if you’re a fan of all things natural, you’ll love this. The world’s most expensive treatment bath is exclusively offered by a hotel in Miami in which you can bathe in twice-filtered Evian water sprinkled with Gerbera daisies. The cost of this ‘exotic treat’? £3500 a time! Think I’ll stick to good old tap water and rose petals (even if Serena Williams is said to be a huge fan of the benefits).

LOCAL PEOPLE, LOCAL LIVES Name : Ray Dixon Job: Professional Photographer with Dixon Photographic Tell us about your family? I’m married to my beautiful wife called Julie, who is a Beverley lass born and bred. We have five children between us aged between 34 & 19. What do you do in your spare time? Spare time??? For most self-employed people these days, I don’t think that word exists… But if I ever do have some spare time it’s either spent with family and friends, or relaxing capturing nature and wildlife photography. How would you describe Beverley to a visitor? A hidden gem or a quieter version of York with all the history. What do you like most about Beverley? Besides the people and Beverley itself, when your returning home from being away. Your driving over the Westwood, you see the golf course (which Julie’s dad Colin Anderson used to be Captain of) and there in front of you standing proud is our beautiful minster. You then know your home… If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? Now this is a difficult question. My mother, just to hopefully show her what her son has achieved both professionally and personally in his life. As I’m very proud. Hopefully she would be? What is your favourite food? I’ve not really got a favourite, although our local takeaways might say differently ;-) When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see? Last month, Julie and I were supposed to go see American Made. I booked it on line and some how booked American Assassin… A genuine mistake honest, well worth the watch. Briefly explain your working day and what your job entails? Edit photographers we’ve captured, edit, edit and some more editing. Design beautiful luxury Italian wedding albums with a lifetime guarantee for our wedding couples. Photograph babies, children, families, pets, products etc in our Beverley town center studio. Maybe have a consultation on a night with potential wedding couples. Then finish off with a little more editing… What do you love most about your job? Working alongside my beautiful wife every day and meeting lots of new people. For me to have the privilege of capturing someone’s memories of their wedding or child etc is an absolute honour. I appreciate you are photographing memories to last a lifetime, which I never take for granted. That’s why I cringe when I hear

BeverleyMag October 2017

someone say their friend is photographing their wedding etc, because they’ve got a nice camera. I’ve trained hard to get qualified to capture those images. You wouldn’t let someone pull out your teeth just because they’ve got pliers would you? But that seems to be the case when it comes to photography. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time? Still capturing memories for people of Beverley and surrounding areas. A little older and a little greyer, but still very happy. Dixon Photographic, Beverley T: 01482 868 464

Gardening

Collecting fallen leaves Far from being a nuisance, fallen autumn leaves should rather be treasured as an important season soil improver so we should all make more of this autumnal dividend Dealing with fallen leaves seems to sum up autumn in the garden. Yes, it can be hard and often cold work for those well practised in collecting the leaves but the key thing to remember is you are handling a valuable resource. Leaf litter is the source of free and wonderful organic matter and should be used to replenish the garden. The good news is there is only one way to get leaf mould-make it yourself. Leaf mould is not produced or sold commercially. And you only need three ingredients – fallen leaves, moisture and time! Leaf mould is what’s left when the dead, fallen leaves from deciduous trees and shrubs are heaped up and allowed to rot down. As they slowly moulder, only the toughest bits remain, eventually forming spongy, dark brown crumbs to rival any dessert topping. Leaf mould should be free of pests, diseases and weeds (unless you gather it from where they’re

BeverleyMag October 2017

seeding), a delight to handle, and you can’t possibly overdose your soil on it. The hidden alchemy that brings it about – the countless micro organisms that drive decay – gives leaf mould its almost magical quality. It has several great attributes. The first is that it can hold up to 500 per cent of its own weight in water.

One is to build circular wire cages – about two metres in diameter. The number of bins clearly depends on the number of trees and leaves you expect in your garden.

Most leaves are slightly acidic when they fall, with a pH below 6. However, as the leaves break down into leaf mould, the pH goes up into more of a neutral range. Leaf mould will not correct pH problems, but will have a moderating effect.

Remember, you get out only a quarter to a third of what goes into a cage. You can also just fill black bin bags but remember to pierce the bag to allow air in to accelerate the decomposition.

Though leaves are not high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, tree roots mine calcium, magnesium and many other trace minerals from the soil and so your garden will also benefit from these nutrients. Leaf mould – an action plan As part of reducing your reliance on manure and other imported fertility, leaf mould should become pivotal to gardening. There’s a number of ways to store the fallen leaves.

A porous builder bag filled with autumn leaves and with its handles lashed together also works well.

Magical Mulch The finished article after perhaps three years is chunky mulch that is ideal for smothering young annual weeds and blocking out light to stop others coming up. Nothing beats fresh leaf mould as a dark foil for showing off emerging perennials in a border filled with promise, and it works just as effectively around newly planted vegetables, fruit, or on top of containers to help prevent them from drying out.

If you’re impatient and have only leaf mould that is one or two years old and hasn’t yet formed ‘crumble,’ you can use it as mulch. Soil Improver Using a sieve results in a more refined mould, free of even small twigs. In spring, spread a bucketful of leaf mould to each square yard and fork it in deep. It helps bind loose, sandy soils and improves their waterholding ability. Conversely, it helps break up tough, claggy clays, making them more gardener friendly. If you have a lot of ground to improve and sieving is impractical, take your leaf mould out as it comes, remove hard chunks of debris, and fork or dig it in. Leaf mould is low on fast-acting plant nutrients; its effect is more of a catalysing one that encourages a healthy soil ecosystem in which everything works together to feed plants gradually and slowly. Soils bolstered with leaf mould become slowly darker in colour as their humus levels increase.

Gardening Potting Mixer You can also use leaf mould as a potting mix. Sieve it to get rid of any big lumps and then mix it according to different recipes.

Then there are times when leaves fall on woodland planting, shady beds where there’s shrubs or at the back of borders where it might be difficult to access them. In all these cases the easiest thing to do is just let any fallen leaves decompose directly onto the bed.

A basic mix for seed sowing and for potting-up plug plants, bulbs and tomatoes, should be a 50:50 mix of three-year-old leaf mould and worm-worked garden compost, both passed through a quarterinch (6mm) sieve and thoroughly blended.

How wildlife will love your rotting leaves An unexpected benefit of making leaf mould is that you’re also encouraging garden biodiversity. You will often get a flush of mushrooms over the surface, as the alchemy of decomposition begins. Worms will also move in for a while to do their stuff.

The garden compost provides ample food for about a month before you need to start feeding. For small seeds, you can pass this already refined mix through a finer eighth-inch (4mm) sieve to give a seed covering that is akin to breadcrumbs. For seed sowing, the low nutrient value of leaf mould is ideal, as it doesn’t encourage sappy, quick growth in the seedlings. Use half leaf mould, half silver sand. For potting, use four parts leaf mould to two parts loam or sieved topsoil to one part grit. Finally, for a mature plant mix for containers, use: four parts leaf mould to five parts loam to four parts garden compost to two parts grit.

Top Dressing Lawns Leaf mould is brilliant for the top-dressing of lawns. It’s low in nutrients so won’t encourage over-quick growth, and if you mix it with sand, it’s easy to rake in after aerating your lawn. Compost Booster To harness the microscopic army that magically transforms tough oak leaves into soft, brown crumbs, keep a bucket of leaf mould next to compost bins. Whenever you add

fresh material -kitchen scraps, teabags, coffee grinds, scrunched card, weeds, add a handful of leaf mould, too. It keeps the compost worms happy, and helps produce high quality compost. When to leave leaves in place There are places and times when it’s just better to let the leaves fall where they are. In orchards for example it’s fine for fallen leaves to rot down into the grass during the winter.

A whole variety of birds will be attracted to the edges of your pile especially around the sides feeding on bugs. You may also see various burrows as you lift back the covering sheet, made by fi eld voles or even toads. Slowworms are often found among leaf mould, too. Awareness of these temporary lodgers might compel you to work more carefully, and more slowly. But patience is what making leaf mould is all about.

Investing in tulips! Planting bulbs in October and November puts a real marker down for next spring and something to look forward to Planting tulip bulbs in autumn for a beautiful display next spring is a joy. Whether you are just planning to plant tulips in a pot or if you have a garden to fi ll, it is making a real investment for next year and the return of spring. Tulips don’t need to be planted until October or November. They only start putting roots down then and the cold temperatures help to wipe out viral and fungal diseases that lurk in the soil and which may infect the bulbs. Planting late is a traditional means of disease protection. Dig a trench/hole 20cm deep and, if you garden on heavy soil, cover the base with 5cm of washed sharp sand, horticultural grit or spent compost. Add a handful of bonemeal to encourage formation of next year’s fl owers and mix it into the soil/grit at the base of the hole. Place the tulip bulbs, pointy end up, about eight cms apart and cover

with soil. If you garden on heavy soil you can mix grit at approximately one-third volume with the infill soil. If you’re short of space, cover the bulbs with soil and then add a second layer of bulbs before filling in the hole. There is still enough soil above the bulbs to allow you to over plant without damaging them. Most gardening books recommend planting tulips at twice the depth of the bulb – at about 8cm in the case of most tulips – but it’s becoming an increasing view to plant deeper, which has lots of advantages. Tulips flower more reliably year after year. In the bulb fields of Holland, tulips are planted near the soil surface to encourage them to reproduce. The higher soil encourages reproduction of the bulb, with the mother bulb developing satellites, or bulbils, around her base. Once this has happened, most of her energy goes into these offspring, so the mother bulb will almost certainly not flower the following year, but the bulbils will not be large enough to flower for two or three years after that, resulting in a blind bulb. If planted deeply, tulips are less likely to try to reproduce and are more likely to flower for year after year.

Six to stand out for next spring Tulipa ’Black Parrot’ This deeply coloured cultivar boasts large flared heads with intricately feathered edges. Petals twist and turn artistically, each one a rich and velvety maroon-black. How about mixing Black Parrot with White Parrot, for a celebration of light and dark? (pictured top)

Tulipa ‘Christmas Sweet’ Single early variety swordlike foliage on a sturdy stem supports the most recognisable flower imported from Holland. (pictured below) Tulipa ‘Purissima’ (pictured below) Impressive bulbs for the border, these Forsteriana Group tulips produce their large, white, single flowers on top of sturdy stems in late March and April.

Tulipa ’Ballerina’ (pictured below) Pointed rich orange petals, which have yellow and blood red undertones, form elegant, scented flowers in early May. The foliage is grey-green and grows to 55cm. Tulipa ‘Pink Impression’ Magnificent pink flowers with a contrasting near-black eye, appear from late April to May and easy to mix with most shades of blue, purple and plum. (pictured below)

The Last Word

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

REORGANISING MY LIFE I’ve decided to reorganise my life. I haven’t worked out all the details yet but I am always so busy and tired that I think a reboot is in order! Over the next few weeks I’m going to work out the most important things – of course, spending quality time with my family comes top of the list – then I’m hopeful that everything else will fall into place. Somebody said to me recently that when you die you don’t think about how much money you have or haven’t got, or how dedicated you were at work or any of those things, it’s often more about how you wished you’d done more with your family, had more time with them. I’m not saying I’m giving up work or anything that drastic, but I am intending to take back control of my time and using it the way I want to, not the way “life” necessarily dictates!

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! I know, I know. Summer, though, seems a long time ago now. Of course we’ll have Halloween at the end of October but then we’ll blink and it will be Christmas. So I figure I need to get a plan in action. As ever, I often have great intentions and then end up leaving it all to the last minute even though it’s more stressful that way. So this year, I WILL do it gradually. I may even write my Christmas cards in November. It’s definitely going on my plan! I intend to surprise even myself this year! I’ll let you know how it goes!

A QUESTION….. Why, oh why, when I put my power lead for my computer neatly in my laptop bag, I get it out the next time and it’s all tangled up? Not just a bit! It seems to thread itself through into knots. I really don’t understand it – but I bet I’m not the only one!
