Local News

Graham Stuart MP:

Great news for Beverley residents seeking NHS dental care

Readers will be aware of the difficulties facing many local patients in Beverley who are trying to see an NHS dentist. For too long, residents have been turned away from practices or held on seemingly endless waiting lists that in some cases have extended for more than three years. In other cases, patients have been forced to travel to Cottingham or even Hull in the hope of booking an appointment. So it is both welcome and overdue that NHS England have

announced that up to £1 million is being offered to local practices in order to increase capacity and cut waiting lists. NHS England predict that as many as 2,000 new NHS patients can be enrolled over the next three years. This is certainly a step in the right direction and I am glad that the pressure on NHS England has finally told. After hearing the concerns of residents last year I asked Moira Dumma, Director of Commissioning for Yorkshire and the Humber, to conduct a review into the provision of dentistry in Beverley and Holderness. As expected, Ms Dumma found the level of service to be inadequate and, following further lobbying, has now put in place a substantial offer to a number of local practices to help boost capacity. NHS England are in continuing discussions to finalise how and when patients will be able to access these services. Despite the welcome announcement, now is not the time to rest on our laurels and I will be holding NHS England to

account to ensure that residents are feeling the benefits of these offers.

Creme d’Or Success In other news, I was delighted to celebrate success of local confectionery firm Creme d’Or during a recent visit. The business employs thirty people in its Tickton office and warehouse and was recently made a Northern Powerhouse Export Champion on the back of impressive expansion across international markets. It was a real treat to meet the team and see how this vibrant local firm is now representing the UK in trade shows around the world. It is a prime example to show that the East Riding remains a great place to do business. To allow more businesses to flourish, it is vital that we have in place the right infrastructure to support sustained growth. Transport is a key part of this and it was fantastic to hear that the Council’s bid for £40m from the Department for Transport to revamp the Jock’s Lodge

junction has been successful. The problematic intersection is the busiest in the East Riding and has become a hotspot for accidents and crippling traffic. By taking the campaign to the top of government the case for funding to revamp the junction, we have secured the largest-ever project of its kind in our area. It was an uphill battle but I am delighted that East Yorkshire will now be receiving this crucial cash, which will make a real difference to local residents, businesses and visitors. Tips for choosing a rug

Beverley Mag’s Jane Gough shares her passion and top tips for buying a new rug for your home So, here we are! It’s June. The rain showers, cold spells and all the other beasts are well and truly gone (I hope!). And finally the hopes that the summer is here or at least is on its way! About time, I’d say! June is also the time that we all like to give our homes a little summer spruce up (well, at least I do), buy something new and maybe bring a bit of colour in too. So how about new living room rugs? Did you know that a new rug can completely transform the look of your room? Any room in fact! Those of you that know me will have probably seen me flaunting my new living room rug recently. And to be honest, it is one

of the best purchases I’ve made. So I guess that would make the flaunting totally understandable, right? Choosing a rug As much as I love my new rug, choosing one was not an easy decision to make. There are so many options out there. There are modern rugs, vintage rugs, oriental, Persian, indoor and outdoor rugs. It’s easy to get confused. l Go large: Avoid having a sad little rug floating in the middle of the room. Don’t be intimidated by scale: the purpose of a rug is to create impact and interest, and a rug that is lost in a room won’t achieve either. l Layer up: Layering rugs or having multiple rugs in one room is a really good way to approach covering the floor, and lets the eye travel. You can layer or position the rugs in different directions and accommodate odd room shapes, too. l Spend vs, save: Opt for affordable (and cleanable) rugs in high-traffic areas and rooms where food will be consumed, and invest in a more expensive wool rug for the sitting room or master bedroom. l On-trend colours: The beauty of rugs is that they don’t need to

BeverleyMag June 2018

‘go’ with your colour scheme; in fact, it’s preferable that they are not matchy-matchy with the rest of the room, so you can use a rug to inject a hit of colour and pattern. There has been an upsurge in requests for clashing red, pink and orange, as well as navy, which works well with other colours. Remember, that a rug that is too big is always better than a rug that is too small! Ideally your sofa and chairs should be on the rug, or at least partially on the rug!

Placing your furniture around it is not the best look. Trust me! Also, the bigger the rug, the bigger the area you’re looking at. In small living rooms it means that just by placing a bigger rug, you make the room look bigger too!

Buy what you love not just what’s fashionable

For all of us, knowing our own mind is the key to enjoying the home décor we really want. Quality not quantity My days of flat-pack and cheap furniture are very much behind me. I am trying not to remember the hard and uncomfortable futon bed I bought for £100 in 1994 and used for six very long years. I have upgraded since then. I now have a super king size bed with a rather expensive (and so worth it) memory foam mattress. Its frame is antique and adapted to the size I wanted. Our tastes are different, but for all of us it’s worth spending what we can afford on those things that add to our quality of life, even if that’s just in the pleasure they give us. Get rid of it If you haven’t upgraded the major pieces around your home in the last decade then now is the time to reassess and decide if: You find them useful You adore them If they don’t fit into either category it might be time for a decluttering trip to a charity shop or the local tip.

To trend or not to trend I buy ONLY what I love now. Previously when chandeliers were in vogue I had one in my bedroom, and when everyone was painting their walls lilac so did I. Not any longer. I am not immune to trends of course –?I confess to currently having copper overhanging kitchen lights (vintage) and a black-andwhite tiled bathroom (reclaimed tiles). Both are recent interiors trends. But my excuse is that it is part of my job. I am also accidentally on trend right now as sustainable, ethical and longlasting items are in fashion and vintage and antique pieces fit in with this. However, I will still be buying them long after the current trend has passed. All about you Now I want my home style to express exactly who I am and my tastes. I love vintage and antiques as I like to feel history around me and I like to find out the provenance of items. I now collect art too, for pleasure and as an investment, which is certainly a new concept to me.

As I have got older I appreciate the past more. It doesn’t mean that I always buy old – my sofa cushions are vintage-look from a high-street shop, and my garden furniture is a mix of old and new. But I am now using my life experiences to create the exact home life that suits me right now. Older children still at home or even grandchildren might be shaping how you live, but within that it’s still possible to have the home you really want. My investment-buy tip One of the best investments you can make is a sofa. Think how much time you spend on it. It is rather like a bed in terms of cost per use. Sofa sales have gone up by 6% in the last 12 months and analysts predict this will keep

BeverleyMag June 2018

rising. This should mean that the market has plenty on offer for you to choose from. Do not keep your sofa just because you have had it fewer than 20 years. Do you think you have to endure it for a lifetime? You don’t. You are now an adult and if you want something comfier/trendier/ more suitable for your new home or you just fancy a change of sofa then go out and buy one (depending on finances of course). Ensure you buy the best you can afford – one you love as well as suiting your needs. PS: I have two. A modern, functional, large grey modular sofa that fits eight of us at a push, and a beautiful blue velvet 1970s twoseater sofa that I love admiring and that I sometimes sit on.

How to give your spare room a five-star makeover

Whether your eldest has flown the nest and you want to convert their bedroom, or your spare room has simply been neglected, here’s how to reclaim that space. That spare room that’s been gathering dust since the kids moved out? It’s time to do something about it. Not only will it make your house a nicer place to live, it could increase the value of your home.

why not turn your spare room into a mini library?

Lacking inspiration? Here are some ideas for how to make the most of your newly reclaimed room...

By day this can be a great lounging sofa for reading, at night it can convert into a cabin bed for guests.

Build in a daybed nook surrounded by shelves and lined with piles of lovely books. Group the books on the shelves by colour to create a striking design detail.

1. Beautiful guest room A stylish guest room is often high on a dream renovation list. Not only will the kids have somewhere nice to stay when they come home for a visit, but it will make friends and family feel welcome, too. Create a serene space by using tonal greys and warm neutrals on the walls, doors, and maybe even on some of the furniture. Make sure it has that hotel feel with plenty of sumptuous pillows, soft throws and a thick feather duvet. 2. Cosy reading room If you want a calm space where you can sink into a good book,

BeverleyMag June 2018

with plenty of storage where you can shut out the world and focus on work, life admin or planning your next travel adventure. Use a colourful patterned wallpaper in front of the desk and hang floating shelves with plenty of boxes for storage. Make it feel more luxe by adding a grand leather chair.

3. Chic home office If you currently have a desk tucked away in the corner of your dining or living room, it may be time for your own dedicated home office. It needs to be a practical space

4. Dream walk-in-wardrobe Tired of feuding with your other half over wardrobe space? That empty room can provide the solution. Opt for wall-mounted rails and free-standing shelving (which is the cheaper option), or floormounted cabinets that will

blend more effectively into the walls. Either way, choose rails offering different heights, hooks for jewellery and ties, and high shelves for handbag storage. Be sure to think about mirrors and lighting as well – especially if it’s going to double as a dressing room. 5. Modern exercise room You can create a stylish and practical gym that will allow you to exercise whenever it suits you. Obviously, the range of equipment you can have is dependent on available space and your budget, but free weights, medicine balls, pull-up bars and yoga mats don’t take up a lot of room. House & Home Cover one wall in large mirrors to check your form and install a small drinks fridge for cold water.

Attach a big mood board to the wall made from cork pads painted in your favourite colour, then pin inspirational ideas, pictures and fabric swatches to it.

Have a supply of small towels, a good stereo system and thicker mats for when you cool down. 6. Useful craft room If you have a hobby, you could turn this newly acquired space into the perfect crafty corner. Use a vintage sewing machine table as your desk for a quirky

look, then hang small wire baskets on the wall above the desk so that everything you need is within easy reach.

7. Calming meditation room Why not dedicate this newfound free space to your emotional wellbeing? A place that will help soothe the mind and be the antidote to your stressful life. To be a good meditation room, it needs to be quiet, calming and a

happy place. Think minimal with little distraction. Paint in neutral tones and limit the furnishings to a small table, cushions and a yoga mat or two.

Three clever ways to remove pet hair from around the house

Pets are wonderful companions – but the amount of hair they shed can be frustrating. These smart tips will help you keep it under control.

You love your pets – especially now that the house is that bit emptier with the kids having moved out – but the dog or cat does increase the amount of time you spend on everyday cleaning. And without children around to help out with the pet care anymore, all the chores now fall to you and your other half. One of the main complaints from pet owners is the sheer volume of hair lying around, even if you’re firm about animals staying off the furniture – because any hair on your clothes will soon transfer itself onto other surfaces anyway! You can try to keep shedding

BeverleyMag June 2018

2. Anti-static spray For cleaning pet hair off wooden furniture such as tables and chairs, try a soft cloth and antistatic dusting spray, which keeps the hair on the duster rather than letting it reattach itself to the furniture.

to a minimum by doing all the brushing and grooming outdoors, but it’s almost impossible to stop it completely. So here are some smart tips for dealing with all of the inevitable pet hair that ends up covering the house… 1. Dampened rubber gloves Sticky tape is probably your current go-to solution for picking up pet hair off soft furnishings

such as sofas and cushions. But while this might be handy for the odd patch of hair, it takes a lot of time, effort and rolls of tape to clean large areas. So, try dampened rubber gloves instead. Once you’ve lightly moistened the gloves, run your hands over any cloth surfaces to attract the hair. You’ll be able to cover large areas such sofas or big pillows quickly, and can simply rinse the hair off the gloves to get rid of it.

You can also spray a bit on the carpet to pull the hairs to the surface before you run the vacuum cleaner over it; be sure to move the vacuum in alternate directions to loosen and collect the fine hairs that get stuck deep in the carpet. 3. Window squeegee You might use one of these to keep shower glass or mirrors squeaky-clean, but did you know a window squeegee is a brilliantly easy way to collect hair from sofas and chairs too? Simply drag it over the seat and the back to collect the pet hair into little piles – then pick it up and throw it away.

Let your home pay for your next holiday It’s the same story every year. Barely six hours after the May Bank Holiday and I’m longing to escape – the lighter nights and warmer weather have me dreaming of distant shores... But the bank balance is still recovering from Christmas excess, winter fuel bills and the vat instalment to the taxman, so the prospect of booking a trip to some far-off place remains in the realms of fantasy. Taking an affordable break By far the most expensive part of a holiday is accommodation, but what if you could find a way to erase that cost? Instantly the bill is halved. So, this year I have decided to approach vacations from a different angle by making use of my largest asset: my home. By either swapping it for a city flat or country villa abroad, or by letting it out for a few weekends to pay for a holiday later in the year, my home can help to wave me off on my travels. Ideally, I would prefer that no cash changed hands but if I can’t find a suitable property swap I’ll dip my toe in the internet letting market. FAQs when you want to let your home for holidays Of course, the idea of handing your keys to complete strangers is a daunting one. What if you get the swappers from Hell? What if you return to a bare apartment or you turn up at the seaside apartment only to find it’s a lockup garage?

BeverleyMag June 2018

1. Let the renters come to you A friend helped calm my nerves. She’s swapped her London flat through a notice board website at least 20 times and swears by it. The trick, she says, is not to advertise your home but to reply to ads seeking a swap because you get a better sense of the person from what they’ve written. She calls up a page on her laptop to reassure me, and indeed there’s a family of four wanting to swap their central Rome apartment at Easter for a flat in London; two couples in Copenhagen offering either of their flats for one large flat in either town or country; a Londoner wanting to swap with someone in Norfolk and a New Yorker searching for a city break somewhere in England. There are images, too, and it feels reassuringly normal. 2. Swapping plans on Facebook Having recently sold her business and become a consultant, my neighbour can pick and choose when she wants to work. Because she craves sunshine in winter, she

has cleared her diary for the first three months of this year and booked an apartment in Portugal.

a room or having a lodger, so it shouldn’t cause too big a headache with your tax return.

To help with her bills, she has asked her Facebook friends if any would like to rent her beautiful barn while she is away. At best, she was hoping for a weekend let here and there, but some friends who are in between moving houses have taken her home for a month. Perfect!

5. Other upsides of holiday letting Many people who become hosts swear it has added sparkle to their lives and made them new friends, introducing them to travellers from all over the globe. If you live near beautiful countryside or in a dynamic city you have a natural selling point, but seasonal festivals also put less obvious locations on the map, whether it’s literary, food, horticultural, film or music.

3. Keeping it flexible Another friend swaps her house in Bath with a chum who has a flat in London, so they each benefit from a weekend away without accommodation costs. If you’re not keen on handing over your home entirely, you could still use notice-boards, Facebook and sites such as Airbnb to offer bed and breakfast, which gives you the flexibility of earning extra cash for a holiday and remaining in control. 4. Making it pay Currently you can earn £7,500 a year tax-free from renting out

The notion of making enough money for an escape has certainly added frisson to my June! So is anybody up for swapping! My cosy Beverley pad is handy for the shops, cafés, restaurants and bars of this delightful town. Yet peaceful walks on the Westwood or in the Wolds are only a few minutes away too. I’m looking for somewhere very hot - possibly Jamaica or one of the Carribean Islands might be nice!! PS If you’re in Etton - I’ve been!

Top 10 most popular holiday snaps It used to be holiday images of hotdog legs that were splashed around Instagram and Facebook but photographs of heart fingers have taken over. A new solo sculpture exhibition by David Sprakes will be at Beverley Art Gallery in the Treasure House from Saturday, 5 May to Saturday, 30 June. It’s the height of the summer holidays so you can expect a deluge of “look-at-me” holiday pictures showing up across your Facebook and Instagram feeds. And most will not only look familiar but may have inspired you to do the same. There’s even a top ten trend list. Once upon a time it was all about “hotdog legs”. We must have got bored with that because according to research by travel agency sunshine.co.uk, it’s the snap of “heart fingers” that we all want to capture, presumably in a romantic situation. We also love “holding the sun”. The latter is presumably another take on holding up the tower of Pisa snap so popular in the early nineties. Before that, well it was about finding the right postcard and having something to write home about.

Today, it seems, anything goes and the average holidaymaker returns home with a staggering pot of 316 pictures on their phone and camera combined. And many make their way into the ethernet. But we cheat. Half of holiday photos uploaded to social media will have had a filter or some sort of doctoring applied to them before first appearing on Instagram then later on Facebook. So what top ten images are currently trending?

Manny Comfrey, Managing Director of Comfrey Farm Holidays, said the following: Hotdog legs used to be the holiday photo trend that was taking the internet by storm, and it’s still up there in the top three. However, people are getting more creative with their holiday photos now and clearly have their sights set

on bigger things… like the sun! It seems that a quick snap of you with a cocktail in hand by the poolside just won’t do anymore and people are striving to outdo each other with their snaps.

Heart fingers – 61% Holding the sun – 48% Leading by the hand – 36% Hotdog legs – 35% Bikini bridge – 29% Beach silhouette – 27% Feet in the sand – 22% Freeze frame jump – 18% Sunglasses reflection – 15% Tan lines – 10%

Keep cool and stay covered Just because you don’t want to swelter on hot, sticky days, it doesn’t mean you have to whip everything off. Here are our top five ways to dress for sunny weather without revealing all. After reaching certain milestones in life, many of us decide that the days of stripping down to a bikini every time the sun comes out are over. But just because we don’t want to dress in revealing clothing doesn’t meant we have to dread overheating on warm summer days. Choose the right clothes for covering up and you can protect yourself from sun-damaged skin as well as beating the heat. Take a look at these tips for hot-weather dressing to find out how. Choose loose, flowing cuts Keeping cool in the heat is all about

BeverleyMag June 2018

getting a breeze on your skin. The fresh air means that sweat evaporates quickly, cooling you down and preventing you from feeling sticky.

But that doesn’t mean you have to bare all – just wearing loose tops and flowing skirts can let the fresh air circulate. So bring on the maxi dresses, loose tunics and maybe even a kaftan for some boho chic while you sip on a cocktail in your deckchair. Ditch the denim for breathable fabrics Even if you normally live your life in jeans at the weekend, when a heatwave strikes, it’s time to put them away. Heavy fabrics like denim aren’t the only ones to avoid. Synthetics like nylon are also much worse at letting in cool air and absorbing sweat. For maximum summer comfort, aim

for lightweight natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Lighten up to beat the heat Brilliant whites and summery pastel shades don’t just look great in the sunshine – they also keep you cool by reflecting the sun’s rays. And there’s no need to worry about the downside of light clothing either – the unforgiving way they show up stains. Cool off with a hat trick Wear a hat in summer to stay cool. It might seem like a contradiction, but it’s all about insulation: in winter the hat helps to keep in your body heat, while in summer it blocks the hot rays from the sun so they can’t warm you up.

Pick a lightweight, breathable style like a classic straw hat to get all of the cooling effect, without trapping your body heat and getting sweaty under the brim. Invest in good sunglasses Getting the right outfit for sunny days is about protecting yourself from UV rays as well as the heat.

So don’t forget your eyes: UV radiation from the sun can contribute to vision problems such as cataracts. Look for shades that block 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that great-looking sunglasses will stylishly frame your face, adding the finishing touch to your summer look.

Culture Train will be rocking into Beverley The Culture Train & Bus Tour will be rolling into St. Mary’s Church in Beverley on June 30th The Culture Train and Bus Tour 2018 will once again bring a taste of the Hull music scene to communities in East Yorkshire located both alongside the railway lines and accessible by EYMS buses.. The ‘Culture Train and Bus tour’ will bring musicians from Paragon Station to play free concerts at eight venues including the station itself as part of a project funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s ‘Active Creative’ arts fund. One of the major events of the tour is a free concert at the majestic St Mary’s Church in Beverley on Saturday 30th June featuring the Happy Endings, the Quicksilver Kings, Elwhaeko and headliners Pavey Ark. These are four acclaimed acoustic acts and a large crowd is expected for the free concert on the Saturday evening. The first band will be on for 7.15 so people are advised to come early. The event is free but music fans could contribute to the church funds through a collection on the evening or buying refreshments at the event. The project was first held during 2017 help take music from the

City of Culture to communities who were not touched by events linked to 2017 Year of Culture such as Hutton Cranswick or Nafferton and nineteen local acts performed at last years gigs. This is an acoustic plug and play tour and musicians will only be able to take what they can carry, take a train from Paragon station to the location, walk to venues use such as Nafferton Methodist Church, plug in and play then catch the Hull train home around 10.30pm. The project is funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Active Creative fund but equally as important are Northern Rail who have supported the initiative and allowing musicians to travel free of charge to destinations on both the Hull to Bridlington and Hull to Goole lines. East Yorkshire Motor Services have also come aboard this year and allowing acres to travel to both Market Weighton and Hornsea so most of the region will be visited by the tour. TransPennine Express also support the Culture Train and they are to host a gig at Paragon Station on the afternoon of Saturday August 11th hosted by the young talent of Freedom Road Creative Arts. The evening gigs wil be held 7pm - 10pm and the free events are as follows:

Saturday 13th October. Twenty established acts from the Hull & East Yorkshire music scene will be performing at this year’s gigs and this includes people such as Pavey Ark, Elwhaeko, Cuba Drive, Carrie Martin, The Happy Endings, The Quicksilver Kings, Urban Rain, Loudhailer Electric Company and many more talented performers. Chris Warkup of Quiet Riot Arts is looking forward to the project; “This is a great opportunity to promote Hull music outside of the city continue our project to bring talented musicians to the

village pub, a church or railway station and offer a chance to see great local music within your community. Hopefully this could lead to further events in the future or attract new people to attend events elsewhere if they develop a taste for local acts. It is all free so check it out and a big thank you to the Active Creative fund, Northern Rail and East Yorkshire Motor Services for creating this opportunity” More details on the events can be found on the Facebook page CultureTrain2017 or @ quietriotgigs for Twitter.

Beverley Town PAN Disability Football Club Beverley Town PAN Disability SC (formerly Tickton PAN) started in 2012 when Gemma, the Woman’s and Girls Development Officer for East Riding County FA contacted

us to see if we would be the huge potential it could offer interested in running a group. these children. At the time I worked for a private school for children with The sessions started with just 5 children in the beginning but grew learning disabilities, so had week by week and by the second some experience and could see year we had over 50 children on the register. In 2014 we had some fantastic coverage on TV via the FA cup draw, live from the Deep in Hull, which has helped to further increase group numbers and promote what the sessions offer. Sessions now run every Friday night at Longcroft School Sports Hall from 6pm to 8pm and costs just £5 per session (your first week is free!).

Over the years the club has won many awards including: Club of the year, Coach of the year (for our two young coaches, one of whom is my son, Olly, and who have both given over 400 hours of volunteering for us), Young Male Player of the year and Young Female Player of the year and at this year’s awards run by Disability Sports Humber, we were shortlisted in more than four categories. The Wisdom of Famous Cartoon Characters Everyone knows that cartoons and animated films of the Disney variety are for kids. However, they are written by adults and sometimes, tired of writing halfwitted jokes and inane conversation, they manage to sneak in a few life lessons along the way. And given the rapid-fire pace of dialogue in kiddie shows, you have to listen pretty closely to separate the wheat from the chaff. The hope is that some of this wisdom might make a lasting impression on the kids who are watching (and perhaps the adults watching with them) so they can learn from it. Here is some of the wisdom of famous cartoon and animated film characters. Aladdin (Aladdin): “Do not be fooled by its commonplace appearance. Like

so many things, it is not what outside, but what is inside that counts.” The Blue Fairy (Pinocchio): “Always let your conscience be your guide.” Mulan (The Emperor of China): “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of them all.” Merida (Brave): “Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.” Stitch (Lilo & Stitch): “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” Wise words indeed!

Beverley Market traders present £2,172.81 to hospital appeal Beverley Market traders have presented a cheque for £2,172.81 to the Daisy Appeal at Castle Hill Hospital. The money was raised at a charity day organised by the traders and held at Beverley Saturday Market on Saturday 5 May. There was a children’s treasure hunt, cycle challenge, and a grand raffle and tombola with prizes donated by businesses from Beverley and the surrounding area. The event was supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which runs Beverley’s Saturday and

Wednesday markets.

Professor Nick Stafford, chair of the Daisy Appeal, said: “The support we have received from the Beverley Market traders has been fantastic. “Thanks must go to Richard Lascelles and his team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council and a special thank you to stallholder Lisa Gray, from the Little Cheese Pantry, who worked tirelessly collecting raffle and tombola prizes and selling tickets. “The total amount of £2,172.81 is magnificent and will certainly go

towards helping the Daisy Appeal charity to fund a new £7.2million Cyclotron and Radiopharmacy Unit at Castle Hill Hospital in

Cottingham, which will be used to help medics in the earlier detection of cancer, heart disease and dementia.”

CHASE & STATUS (DJ Set) are coming to HULL – Zebedee’s Yard Friday 27th July 2018

From their early gigs in Brighton in the spring of 1988 — in venues such as The Richmond and The Zap — Levellers were a ‘gang band’ that attracted an instant following. Then as now, just like their heroes The Clash, they represented a potent brew of activism and hedonism. Their music appealed to the head, the heart and the feet in equal measure. The selfstyled ghetto kings of downside town, Levellers never looked back. And on and on the river flowed..

Inner City Live, are delighted to announce a DJ set from British music drum & bass act Chase and Status, taking place this summer as part of their 2018 summer music events. Full line-up includes – High Contrast & Shinobi Residents Shimah, Simma & Mc AOB.s. Giovanni’s Tomato and Roasted Garlic Pie If you haven’t used Taleggio before, now is the perfect time to try it. Don’t be put off by the smell; this cheese has a very mild flavor and is an ideal complement to fresh tomatoes.

Photograph by Dixon Photographic T: 01482 868464

INGREDIENTS • 2½ pounds mixed heirloom tomatoes, cored, sliced ¼-inch thick • 3 tablespoons olive oil • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided, plus more • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more • 6 garlic cloves • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter • 9 ounces whole grain crackers • 2 large eggs • 10 ounces Taleggio cheese, rind removed, coarsely grated (about 1½ cups) • 2½ ounces finely crumbled Parmesan (about ½ cup) • ½ cup mayonnaise • 1 tablespoon chopped thyme, plus ½ teaspoon leaves • 1 small shallot, thinly sliced Special Equipment A 9-inch-diameter springform pan METHOD Place a rack in middle of oven; preheat to 475°. Arrange tomatoes on a rimmed baking sheet, covering entire surface (it’s okay if they overlap). Drizzle with oil; season with salt and pepper. Roast until tomatoes begin to look dry on top, 25–30 minutes. Let cool. Meanwhile, cook garlic and butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, swirling often, until butter foams and milk solids turn golden, 5–8 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof measuring cup; transfer garlic and toasty bits to a cutting board. Finely chop and set aside.

Figaro’s BeverleyMag June 2018

Reduce oven temperature to 375°. Pulse crackers and ¼ tsp. salt in a food processor until fine crumbs form (you should have about 2 cups). Add eggs and 6 Tbsp. garlic butter and pulse until mixture is the consistency of wet sand.Transfer to springform pan. Using a flatsided measuring cup, press crumbs firmly onto bottom and 1½” up sides of pan. Bake crust until fragrant and edge is just starting to take on color, 8–10 minutes. Transfer pan to a wire rack and let crust cool. Mix Taleggio, Parmesan, mayonnaise, chopped thyme, remaining ½ tsp. salt, remaining ¼ tsp. pepper, and reserved chopped garlic in a medium bowl. Gently dollop half of cheese mixture over bottom of crust, then spread into an even layer with an offset spatula (don’t press too hard or you will break the crust). Layer half of tomato slices over and press down to even out layers. Repeat with remaining cheese mixture and tomatoes. Brush remaining garlic butter over tomatoes. Top with shallot, then scatter thyme leaves over. Bake pie until filling bubbles vigorously and crust is browned, 60-75 minutes. Let cool - one hour before serving. Pie can be made 1 day ahead. Cover loosely and chill (it’s really good cold). SERVES 6

Taleggio cheese Taleggio is a semisoft, washed-rind, smear-ripened Italian cheese that is named after Val Taleggio. The cheese has a thin crust and a strong aroma, but its flavour is comparatively mild with an unusual fruity tang. Good substitutes for Taleggio are: Brie, Bel Paese, Fontina, Limburger, Robiola.

underneath that helps with drainage. “It’s a perfect location - a little bit of France in East Yorkshire,” Rebekah told the attentive audience at the Beverley wine tasting.

World of Wine As a passionate advocate of English wine I make no apologies for returning to the subject again; a recent wine tasting organised by the outgoing Mayor of Beverley as the last charity event of her year in office, allowed me to catch up with all the news from one of two thriving vineyards here in East Yorkshire. The evening, hosted by Councillor Ann Willis and held in The Guildhall in Beverley, saw us tasting the current six wines that make up the Laurel Vines collection - five whites and a rose. It’s still a surprise to many people that just seven miles from the centre of Beverley is a thriving vineyard and winery and one that is currently getting a lot of national acclaim (the other local one is the Little Wold Vineyard at South Cave). Laurel Vines, based in Aike, between Beverley and Driffield, is a family business run by Ian and Ann Sargent and their daughter Rebekah and Rebekah’s partner Jonathan, along with Ian’s brother, Neil. Although there are around 700 vineyards in the UK (mainly in the south), Laurel Vines is among a fairly

select number that also make their own wines on site as well as grow the grapes. The first vines were only planted in 2011 but since the first wines were bottled four years ago Laurel Vines has been garnering national acclaim with three bronzes at the UK Wine Awards; two in the English Independent Wine Awards; and last year carried off the title Best Wine Maker and Grower of the Year for the North of England. Rebekah is the company’s sales manager and passionate to spread the word about the family business. “We have lived in Aike for 20 years; it’s a lovely village to grow up in and I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” Rebekah told me. “My dad runs a successful electrical business in Hull but around 15 years ago decided he wanted to make wine. He wasn’t an expert by any means, but enjoyed drinking it! “He bought some land at nearby Laurel Farm (hence the name) and just took it from there - we’ve learned as we went along and have since acquired some more land,” she said. “We currently have 9,000 vines planted and will have planted another 2,800 by the end of this month, making us the biggest vineyard in East Yorkshire.” Whether by accident or design the decision to buy the land at Aike has proved fortuitous - it’s south facing, so getting plenty of sun, and predominantly heavy loam with chalk

The six wines we tasted and which make up the current portfolio started with Ortega, made with 100% grapes of the same name. It’s medium dry, delicately creamy with a fruity nose. Grassy and crisp, it’s 11 per cent alcohol by volume with a hint of asparagus on the palate - a good wine to partner summer salads. All Laurel Vines wines are single varietals named after the grapes they are made from and next up was Phoenix, a touch paler than Ortega but once again a medium dry white wine with slightly more alcohol (12%) and perhaps the vineyard’s closest example to a Sauvignon Blanc. I detected tastes of fresh ripe fruit and we agreed this would be best served with savoury dishes and salads. Two down and four to go . . . the third wine was a dry white, Seyval Blanc, a French grape variety that was citrus on the nose and delivering intense fruity flavours. A fairly light wine, it proved very quaffable and with only 10% alcohol by volume I can imagine this being the perfect accompaniment to an al fresco dining afternoon. Surprisingly, for a drier tasting wine, this one did deliver a slight sweetness on the finish. Our fourth wine, a bronze award winner, was Solaris and probably my favourite of the whole evening. Asparagus notes on the nose and a fresh fruity palate, this dry white would be great on its own or as an aperitif but would also make a great partner for spicy dishes. The final white wine tasted was the

pale, straw-coloured Madeleine Angevine - a white grape variety from the Loire Valley that’s also popular in Germany, making an attractive fruity wine with a flowery nose - crisp and dry and pairing particularly well with seafoods such as crab and oyster. The last wine of the night, a rose wine called Rondo, was for most people the star of the show; a bright raspberry red in colour but a wine full of strawberry notes with a touch of creaminess thrown in - a bit like drinking strawberries and cream one of my fellow guests commented. I can definitely see why this is a popular wine, but perhaps a tad too sweet for me! The Laurel Vines story continues to gather apace and Rebekah told us the next year will see their first red wine introduced and also their first Champagne-Style fizz. Currently stocked by some of the area’s best restaurants, including Cerutti 2 in Beverley, the Pipe and Glass in South Dalton and 1884 Dock Street Kitchen in Hull, Laurel Vines wines have to battle the same problem as all other English wines - price. Because of the duty levied by the British Government (roughly £2.50 per bottle as opposed to pence by French producers) the average supermarket price is likely to be pounds higher than the overseas wines we are more used to buying - around £12 per bottle. But believe me, it is worth seeking out. And the good news is it can be bought direct from the supplier at £9 a bottle - just place your order and collect on site. Or it can be delivered. In addition to Laurel Vines wines described, any of the following would be worth trying this month . . .

10 things in your kitchen to get rid of right now! Do you wish your kitchen was bigger, cleaner, tidier? The good news is, the solution is easier than you think, and doesn’t involve large-scale building work or a live-in housekeeper: it’s simply a case of throwing some things away! Decluttering drawers, worktops and cupboards will give you more space to cook in, help the room look bigger, and make the busiest room in the house far quicker to clean. But how do you even begin sorting through the stuff that’s accumulated over the years? The task can be daunting to achieve all in one go, so break it down into manageable chunks. For starters, here are 10 things you can get rid of right now to make a huge difference to the way your kitchen looks and feels:

1. Bulky machines and gadgets Let’s be honest, how much do you really use that popcorn maker, bread machine, toasted sandwich maker or ice cream maker you got for Christmas five years ago? Chances are it’s gathering dust on your countertop, and taking up valuable space. If you haven’t used it in the last 12 months, give it to charity or sell it on eBay; if you haven’t touched it in the last three months, store it in a cupboard or on top of a kitchen unit, freeing up the work surface for something you use more often. 2. Plastic boxes Reusable takeaway containers, old ice cream tubs, Tupperware… most of us have a cupboard overflowing with plastic containers that “might come in useful” one day (but never do). So, be ruthless. Keep just six or so – choose different sizes, ones with lids that fit securely, and ones that can be used in the freezer. Then throw the rest away or recycle them where possible. You’ll be surprised how liberating it feels! 3. Old tea towels Recycle any tea towels, aprons or

Alternatively, start afresh with a set of new tea towels in bright colours to give your kitchen an instant lift. 4. Cleaning products If the cupboard under your sink is stuffed with dozens of different cleaning products, it’s time to streamline them. Only keep a few multi-purpose cleaners that will do a variety of everyday jobs, such as Fairy Liquid, which will not only leave dishes sparkling, but also clean surfaces, floors and windows, too.

5. Excess crockery No one needs more than one set of plates and bowls (okay, maybe two if you reserve one special set for dinner parties), but over the years it’s easy to amass a huge collection of mismatched crockery that takes up a lot of room and rarely gets used. Retire any pieces that have chips or that don’t match, and hold on to just eight to 10 place settings at the most.

6. Sponges and cloths Clear out all your old sponges and cleaning cloths, and invest in a few microfibre cloths instead. Not only are they reusable and more hygienic than normal cleaning cloths, but they’re more efficient too, as their tiny fibres cling to even the tiniest dirt particles, releasing them when the cloth is washed in hot water. 7. Mugs Pretty ones, funny ones, ones we

were given by the grandchildren… Mugs make good gifts, so it’s no wonder we tend to have far too many of them in our cupboards. Allocate just one shelf for them – or hang a row of hooks directly underneath your kitchen units – and only keep as many mugs as will fit. Give the others to charity, or donate them to a local community centre to use for events and coffee mornings. 8. Small gadgets Small specialist utensils can seem like a good idea at the time, but if you’ve only ever used that avocado peeler, nutmeg grater or cherry stoning tool once in five years, it’s time to give it to the charity shop. 9. Food and drink It’s surprising how much food and drink we hang on to that’s past its expiry date, particularly things like fancy teas, sauces and herbs that only get used occasionally. Take everything out of your cupboards and check the dates – you’ll be amazed how much room you free up. Next, decant dried goods such as flour, sugar and pasta into glass storage jars and paint a ‘label’ on them with chalkboard paint. Use chalk to write the contents and expiry date on the label, so you can instantly spot when things need replacing. 10. Carrier bags Plastic carrier bags may have a million different uses, but we don’t need a million of them stuffed into a cupboard or drawer. Keep 12 or so neatly in a hanging storage bag, and take the rest to your local supermarket to be recycled. Words: Heather Mapplebeck

Five surprising breast cancer symptoms you must not ignore Chances are, you know somebody who has been directly affected by breast cancer and, if you do, you’ll know that early detection is key. More than 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest stage survive the disease – so here we’re sharing five warning signs that might not seem ‘obvious’ to you but still need to be given attention. If you do recognise any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor to get things checked out. 1. Nipple retraction While most of us know to look out for any new lumps or bumps, nipple retraction – where the nipple appears to turn inwards – is a key sign many women aren’t aware of.

When checking your breasts for signs of cancer, it can be easy to miss some of these unlikely symptoms...

2. A lump in the armpit, not the breast It’s worth knowing that swelling in or around your armpit or collarbone can also be a sign of breast cancer, as it’s not just the

breasts themselves where lumps are found. This can be a sign the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in those areas, and sometimes it can even be spotted before you feel a lump in the breast. Lumps in the armpit can be caused by other things too, such as infections or allergies, but it’s worth seeking medical help as soon as you notice a lump to rule out anything untoward. 3. A rash It’s easy to brush away niggling symptoms like rashes, but for some women it’s not always an allergy, or a change in washing powder that’s causing it. A rash across one or both breasts can be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, so if you’re even the slightest bit concerned, it’s always worth getting it checked out to put your mind at rest. 4. Eczema It’s not common, but Paget’s disease of the breast (different to Paget’s disease of the bone,

where bones become weak and deformed) is a rare skin condition that is sometimes a sign of underlying breast cancer. It looks very similar to eczema – a red, scaly rash covering the breast – and is often itchy, too. It always starts in the nipple, and sometimes extends to the areola. 5. Thickening of the nipple The key to detecting breast cancer early is getting to know your breasts – and what’s normal for them. While every woman is different, checking your breasts regularly means you’ll spot any changes quickly, and feel more confident visiting a doctor when something’s amiss. Remember their appearance and feel can change at different times of your cycle, and again once you’ve gone through the menopause, but if your nipple feels thicker than normal, or the texture has changed in some way, then it’s worth investigating. Any changes in the skin at all in that area – from puckering and dimpling to thickening and itching – should never be ignored.

How many people develop breast cancer in the United Kingdom? l Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the UK. l Over 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK, including around 4,700 in Scotland. l Each year, around 7,400 additional women are diagnosed with an earlier, non-invasive form of breast cancer.

BeverleyMag June 2018

These are confined to a specific area of the breast (usually milk ducts) but may later develop the ability to spread. l One in eight women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. l Around 380 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK.

Eating Garlic can reduce risk of certain cancers, study finds Researchers are still debating the most beneficial way to prepare garlic Garlic has been highly regarded as a health-boosting ingredient for a very long time, used to treat human disease for thousands of years. However, the way that garlic benefits the body has perplexed researchers for eons. In a recent study published by scientists from the University of Nottingham, researchers concluded that garlic can in fact reduce the risk of developing certain kinds of cancers, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Furthermore, the way in which garlic is prepared can have a positive effect on the bulb’s ability to benefit your health. However, scientists have been unable to determine which method of preparation is the most effective. Garlic produces a variety of sulphur compounds when prepared, whether it’s chopped, fermented in alcohol or pressed for oil. According to researchers, these sulphur compounds can affect “gaseous signalling molecules” such as nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide that are naturally produced in the human body. Altered levels of gaseous signalling molecules can be detected in people suffering from many

Health, Beauty & Wellbeing

diseases, as they can have a huge impact on cell communication and maintaining balance in the body. “These molecules give the plants an ecological advantage when they’re growing out in the wild,” said Dr Peter Rose, a biochemist at the University of Nottingham and senior author of the study. “As it happens, they’re also biologically active within mammalian cells and tissues, but we do not know how they are metabolised in humans.” While the optimum technique for preparing garlic is still being debated, the researchers did agree that garlic is one of several plant

species that has strong restorative abilities. “There is a lot of possibility within this area for finding approaches that could reduce the risk of diseases and improve human health, but it all comes back to those fundamental questions of what actually happens to these compounds when we metabolise them,” Dr Rose said. “There’s a whole spectrum of human work that still needs to be done to further explore some of these weird and wonderful sulphur compounds that we find within our diets.” The review was published in the journal Trends in Pharmacological Sciences.

9 things a dermatologist wants you to know about fake tan

A scene many of us are familiar with - the sun rears its head, and all of a sudden it’s strikingly obvious how pale our limbs really are. Thankfully, things have come a long way in fake tanning since the nineties (those streaky orange shins are now a thing of the past – hurrah!) but there’s still plenty of conflicting information surrounding the fake stuff. We asked Dr. Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist, to break it down for us - covering everything from DHA risks to whether you can fake tan whilst pregnant... 1. FAKE IS ALWAYS SAFER THAN A REAL TAN There’s been a lot of discussion about the safety of DHA recently. DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, the substance that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in dead skin cells (it’s responsible for that biscuity odour, too). But according to Dr. Mahto, it’s no real cause for concern. “Using a fake tan is considerably safer than lying in the sun or tanning booth,” she says. “Real tanning works by exposing you to UV radiation that damages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. Any risks associated with DHA are widely-debated and remain purely speculative and, unlike sunbathing, there’s no direct evidence DHA increases the risk of cancer.” 2. IT’S STILL BEST NOT TO BREATHE IT IN Tanning mitts at the ready? Think about how you apply your tan, and whereabouts you do it. “Evidence suggests DHA is safe in the concentrations used in fake tan, but special care should be taken to avoid inhaling, ingesting, or getting it in your eyes – especially when

BeverleyMag June 2018

using sprays,” says Dr. Mahto. Her advice is to always apply fake tan in a well-ventilated area, protecting the eyes, nose and mouth - and then you’re good to go. “As long as you follow product instructions, there’s no reason to be concerned,” she says. 3. THERE’S NO PROOF ORGANIC TANS ARE ‘HEALTHIER’ Tempted to pick up an organic fake tan? You could be wasting your time. “Like regular fake tans, organic ones still usually contain DHA, but the main difference is they claim to derive it from natural ingredients - such as sugar beets - as opposed to man-made, synthetic types. They claim to react to the amino acids only in the dead top layers of the skin, whereas nonnatural and non-organic fake tans could contain chemicals added to weaken the skin’s surface. The result is a faster-developing tan, with the product being absorbed into the bloodstream.” Still, Dr. Mahto is quick to point out there’s actually no conclusive evidence of this, so if your favourite fake tan isn’t organic then it’s probably not worth losing sleep over. 4. IT’S REALLY EASY TO BURN WEARING FAKE TAN While it’s easy to feel smug fake tanning while your friends are getting a real one, don’t relax too much. “Getting your tan from a bottle doesn’t mean your skin hasn’t - or won’t - encounter sun damage, so a broad-spectrum factor 30+ sunscreen should still be regularly applied,” warns Dr. Mahto. Be mindful of SPF claims, too. “Some fake tans claim to include an SPF, but, this can be misleading as any SPF within the fake tan will wear off a couple of hours after application. Proper sun protection should never be substituted – don’t kid yourself a fake tan offers any protection.” 5. PATCH TESTS ARE A MUST Have a big event coming up and plan on fake tanning? It’s always worth doing a patch test. “Skin types and allergies vary from person to person (some develop over time, too) so it’s

always safest to conduct a patch test behind the ear 24 hours beforehand,” says Dr. Mahto. “Most people don’t have a reaction to fake tan, but if you have sensitive skin it could flare up due to any perfume or alcohol in the product - or if you’ve never used a product containing DHA before.” 6. YOU CAN STILL TAN WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT There’s plenty you can’t do whilst pregnant - but the good news is, fake tanning isn’t one of them. “It’s generally considered safe to use fake tan during pregnancy, but you should stick to self-application products and avoid spray tans, as there is unconfirmed speculation around the effects of inhaling the spray,” says Dr. Mahto. “Either way, the DHA isn’t thought to go beyond the outer of skin, so it won’t be absorbed by the body and is therefore unable to harm the baby. But bear in mind that pregnancy can heighten your risk of having an allergic reaction, as the changes in your hormone levels can make your skin more sensitive than normal.” 7. OIL IS A NO-GO WHEN FAKE TANNING Most fake tanners know that hydrating your skin is essential when it comes to maintaining the longevity of your tan (it’s important day-to-day, too). But it’s crucial to make sure the lotion you’re using is oil-free. “Oils break down the DHA in fake tan, and cause the tan to fade faster,” explains Dr. Mahto.

8. SO IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL Fake tan and laser hair removal

don’t go together - if you apply fake tan before a laser hair removal appointment, you’re increasing your risk of blisters and burns. “Self-tanning products darken the surface of the skin, and when this happens it creates a competing target for the light energy of the laser (the other target is the colour in the hair),” explains Dr. Mahto. “It means more laser energy will be absorbed at the skin’s surface rather than at the base (bulb) of the hair follicle, which is where we want the light energy to be absorbed for the treatment to be effective. This results in too much light energy being absorbed at the surface of the skin, creating unwanted heat which can then cause blisters or burns. 9. IT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO CHECK FOR MOLES How many of us honestly take the time to regularly check our skin? Thought so. According to Dr. Mahto, self-exams should be conducted on a monthly basis to detect unusual growths or changes early on. “The ideal time is usually after a bath or shower, so use your fake tanning time to your advantage and give your body a check before you apply the tan,” says Dr. Mahto. “Carry it out in a well-lit room with the aid of a full-length mirror, looking closely at the entire body - including the scalp, buttocks and genitalia, palms and soles (including the spaces between the fingers and toes).”

Lindsey Adams Advertising Sales Manager of Beverley Mag tries Colon Hydrotherapy

So what is colon hydrotherapy? Claire says there are many misconceptions of treatments, the most common being the idea of being pressure washed on the inside where actually it is a gentle and calming treatment.

“I’ve thought about having a colonic many times over the years and after meeting Claire I finally felt comfortable enough to give it a go. Claire explained everything to me, the health benefits, what would happen during the treatment and how it would feel. During the colonic I didn’t realise how much actually comes out, it is a surreal experience, quite a weird feeling and surprisingly not embarrassing at all. Immediately after the treatment I felt clean, much less bloated and left with a calming sense of “Zen”.

Through the introduction of warm water, herbs and coffee into the colon, toxins are removed, inflammation is reduced and bad bacteria eliminated allowing our I would definitely recommend having bodies to heal and repopulate with a colon hydrotherapy treatment, I healthy, good bacteria. feel amazing – go give it a try!” By cleansing the colon this way the benefits are boundless, from helping an individual with irritable bowel syndrome, assisting with weight loss and bloating, acne to anxiety and depression, or for anyone who simply wants to feel refreshed, colon hydrotherapy can make a huge difference to your quality of life!

Free diving – great for relaxation and mindfulness, it is the fastest growing extreme sports in world. I also enjoy mounting biking and basically any outdoor sports. I ended up fracturing my neck, and that was when I decided a less active job would be better for me and set up the Gelato Lounge. How would you describe Beverley to a visitor? A beautiful historic town, seeped in history. Plenty of shops and eating establishments. A great variety of things to do and places to see. What do you like most about Beverley? I love the all the cafes, bars and restaurants. A great place to eat out and meet friends. If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why? Johnny Depp – because I think he would be extremely interesting to talk to. I think he is a great, versatile actor and very charismatic. What is your favourite food? Until quite recently I would have said cakes and pastries and anything sweet, but having just found out I have a yeast intollerence, I am having to change my diet drastically…. No more beer! When did you last go to the cinema and what did you see? Last week – I went to see the film Twelve strong. A story of a Special Forces Team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11. It was brilliant. Briefly explain your working day and what your job entails? I am generally in the café around 8.30am each day to start the preparation of the food, get the café ready for opening etc.. Then the day involves serving customers, food preparation, ordering and then cleaning up before we close at 7.30pm. What do you love most about your job? As a people person, I love interacting with customers and regulars.

We pride ourselves on our high standard of service and strive to make each customers visit one they won’t forget. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time? We are currently investigating the possibility of extending the premises. We are looking at creating additional space on the ground floor to add extra seating, both inside and out and also accommodate more disabled access. Bygone Beverley - In association with the East Riding Archive

MOVING WITH THE TIMES When you walk past an old building or ruin, you tend to assume that it has stood there since the day it was built, and perhaps you’d take a moment to wonder at the miracle of how it has survived for so long. It’s a fairly safe assumption to make with objects that have been around for centuries and, for anyone unfamiliar with the history of Beverley, a casual glance at the Old Friary Gate on Eastgate, near the Minster, would make you think the same thing about this near 500 year-old remnant of the town’s medieval Dominican Friary. Settled neatly within the wall that lines this street, you could almost imagine the friary buildings sitting behind the gate in the Minster’s shadow. But, on closer inspection, all is not as it appears. A small adjacent plaque briefly tells how, on Sunday 14th June 1964, the gateway was moved to ‘ensure its permanent preservation’. It’s now 54 years since this medieval gateway was carefully

and precariously hoisted across the road into its present location, and you can actually witness this odd occurrence for yourself, thanks to video footage that we have at East Riding Archives, which is available on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council YouTube channel. Simply search for ‘Beverley Friary

It’s remarkable to observe how this centuries-old gate was moved intact from one side of the street to the other and sits there now as though it had never been moved. The picture quality of the video leaves something to be desired but it does at least show us exactly what happened on 14th June 1964. Sitting in front of the office accommodation for the old Armstrong Patents Co Ltd, this monastic gate was in danger of being damaged by passing traffic,

and so it was down to Armstrong’s works manager, George Heslip, to manage its safe relocation. He assembled a team of joiners, fitters, welders, and bricklayers, and worked out a plan of action. The team slowly and carefully released the gate from its footings, and once secured, it was lifted and carried en masse by a lorrymounted crane, approximately 40 yards across to the western side of Eastgate and lowered into position near the old Minster Vicarage. Thanks goodness they didn’t drop it! The archive video footage is also included on our ‘Beverley Industry’ DVD, priced £5.99 from Beverley Tourist Information Centre. Grow your own summer cocktail ingredients Whatever your poison, green-fingered mixologist Lizzie Palmer tells you what to plant to put a special kick in it. When the sun shines, the young and trendy often think of cocktails in the garden. Go one step better and grow your own ingredients - leaves, flowers or berries. Lizzie Palmer, aka the Moonlight Apothecary, has just opened her cocktail bar for its seventh season at the Secret Victorian Gardens she created in Blagdon Hill, Somerset. Every Friday and Saturday night you can taste botanical cocktails infused with ingredients she grows there. It’s so popular that sessions are timed to ensure more room around the

BeverleyMag June 2018

campfire, marshmallow toaster in one hand, strawberry mint martini in the other. Want to pick something at home to throw in a cocktail after a long, hot day? Lizzie advises: “If you don’t have much space, grow what you can’t buy. Lemon verbena is sensational, as are orange thyme and chocolate mint. We make a chocolate mint julep by adding honey mint syrup to crushed ice and whisky. Orange thyme is delicious with pear or any fruit puree.”

Mix a magical mojito

Mint, crucial in mojitos and Pimm’s, grows easily in pots in light shade. Freshen up a Bloody Mary with chopped oregano, parsley, basil and a lovage stem to stir. Grow purple shiso in a bucket and use just a few leaves for a wonderful pink vodka martini. “If you have some sun, lavender and rosemary grow really well in window boxes or pots and they’re great for infusing gin,” says Lizzie. “Just before the lavender flowers open, pick a dozen heads and put them in a bottle of gin for a couple of hours. The liquid goes pink. You

can do the same with rosemary, four sprigs is enough. Strip the sprigs and add the leaves to a solution of two parts honey, one part water. Heat it so the honey dissolves and leave overnight. Strain it, add gin, lemon juice and tonic or soda.”

For a hipster highball

Nasturtiums are easy to grow in pots. Lizzie packs the leaves and flowers in white rum and leaves it for two to three days. “Then add lime juice and crushed ice. You get the pepperiness of the nasturtium leaves coming through.” The flowers make a great garnish — as do blue starshaped borage flowers, which taste of cucumber. Add them to Pimm’s. If you’ve got a vine, pick the grapes before they’re fully ripe and squeeze the juice out to make verjuice, a tart, tangy lemon juice equivalent.

Or try growing yuzu, the Japanese citrus tree that’s said, unlike regular lemons, to be able to survive UK winters in a container outside. But to be truly en courant, cocktailwise, says Lizzie, grow fennel in big containers. When the yellow flowers are in full bloom later in the summer, tap the pollen dust on to a plate. Dip the rim of your glass in lemon juice and then the pollen for the ultimate hipster highball.

Expert tips to help you in your garden in June. 1. Now’s the time to plant out courgettes, sweet corn, pumpkins, dwarf, climbing and runner beans. But if the weather is still bringing in cold winds don’t forget to protect all young plants with plastic bottles or fleece until they begin to grow. 2. If you fancy a bit of fun, plant up an old boot or painted bucket with herbs or flowers. Drill drainage holes in the bottom first.

whole of the bare soil, to keep weeds in check. 5. On damp, dull days give indoor plants an instant boost with a liquid fertiliser. Once a week should do it. Do the same with flowering and fruiting plants in the garden too, including tomatoes, strawberries and hanging baskets. 6. Six weeks after flowering, daffodils can now be cut back. Also dead head early flowering plants if berries/fruits aren’t desired, this helps retain the plant’s vigour and with some plants may encourage more flowering.

3. Stay ahead of weeds with a regular hoe. It’s good to dig out the perennials ones, such as dandelions, before they produce more seed. 4. Keep watering newly planted plants. Make sure you water directly by the plant’s stem and not the

Ten giveaway events were held across the East Riding during May in Beverley, Market Weighton, Elloughton, Preston, Goole, Pocklington, Carnaby, Withernsea, Hornsea and Driffield.

There was a large turn-out at each site with residents queuing up in their cars to collect two free 15kg bags of compost. It proved so popular that every spare bag of compost at each location was handed out. The council has been running the scheme for a number of years, with all the compost given away having been recycled from the garden and food waste East Riding residents put into their brown bins. All the waste placed in brown bins

– including grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, all cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat and egg shells – gets collected and sent for recycling into quality compost for the garden.

Councillor Symon Fraser, the council’s portfolio holder for strategic asset management, housing and environment, said: “The annual compost giveaways are the council’s way of thanking residents for their fantastic efforts in recycling their rubbish throughout the year. “The East Riding now recycles more household waste than any other council in the country and that is all down to residents. “I’m pleased the compost giveaways are so popular and that residents can benefit from supporting our recycling schemes.”

Gardening

GROW MULTI-COLOURED CARROTS Carrots can be easy and fun to grow for children. One of the great things about growing your own vegetables is that you can grow things that are hard to find in the shops. It’s not just unusual vegetables you can grow but also unusual types of familiar ones. Multi-coloured carrots are a great example and they are grown in the same way as orange ones. They are a good way to liven up salads in summer and can be ready to harvest around twelve weeks after sowing.

How to plant.

Make a shallow trench in some raked soil soil in a sunny part of the garden, using the corner of the blade of a hoe. Sprinkle multi-purpose compost along the base of the trench, then water it. Scatter carrot seeds thinly along the row of compost.

Cover the seed with compost or some sieved soil so that the seeds are no longer visible, and put a label at the end of the row. Water the area again if conditions are very dry and the soil goes pale and dusty.

Varieties to plant.

‘Rainbow Mix’. ‘Samurai’, ‘Night Bird’, ‘Creampak’ and ‘Yellowstone’.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. HOLIDAY PRICES

I am so fed up with travel companies and the likes of Center Parcs who insist on putting up their prices by ridiculous amounts when it comes to the school holidays. I, personally, think children should be at school during term-time, but you really can’t blame parents for taking their children on holiday when you can save hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Maybe we need to look at staggering school holidays across the country so there’s no specific few weeks where they get to triple their prices? Could we do that?

ABSOLUTELY CULTURED I can’t wait to see some of the new events coming up from Absolutely Cultured, the new company that’s taken over Hull 2017. First up will be 10,000 dominoes, each one the size of a breeze block, set up across the city centre, weaving in and out of buildings, which will then be toppled in one day. It’s going to take place in August and will be built by hundreds of volunteers. The Northern Lights will also be coming to Hull later in the year in a similar event to the amazing Made in Hull light spectacular we had during our year as City of Culture. This one, though, will be using animated projections. I’m sure this will be one of the ‘jaw-dropping’ experiences they want to deliver to their audience!

IT’S NEARLY SUMMER We’ve had some truly gorgeous weather recently, so let’s hope it continues on throughout June and into the summer. The sun makes everyone so much happier. Forecasters predict great weather in June and an even hotter August! I see family days out and barbeques in my future – and finally getting on top of some gardening! Fingers crossed!
