Welcome to the Beverley Food Festival 2017
Winner of the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourist Attraction – Large Event 2016 Winner of the Countryside Alliance Rural Oscar for Tourism 2016
Food Glorious Food!
Beverley Town Council is delighted to once again welcome you to Beverley Food Festival.
However, it is also important to remember that not everyone can afford to shop at the Food Festival. Hard working volunteers are running food banks across the East Riding, including in Beverley, to ensure that those who need some immediate, practical help with acquiring food have somewhere they can rely on, but stocks are growing low as demand unfortunately increases.
For the past eleven years, we have seen the event grow from a handful of stalls, to become one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the region. In this, the festival’s twelfth year, more stall holders than ever before have joined us, ensuring the range of produce is greater and variety of hot food available gives us all the chance to taste something different. In 2016 we were proud for the festival to be awarded the best Large Event award at the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards, and more recently received a Rural Oscar for Tourism from the Countryside Alliance. To be honoured by these organisations is not only recognition of the excellent produce all the stall holders have to offer, but also acknowledges the hard work of Town Council staff and volunteers who help make Beverley Food Festival the success it is.
Therefore, I would like to encourage everyone attending the Food Festival to keep this in mind, and when you purchase something special from our stall holders, also consider popping to a supermarket and spending a little on a few items to donate – most of what is on offer at the festival is not suitable due to being fresh, having short consumable lifespans or requiring refrigeration, but items such as tinned food, dried pasta, rice, long-life milk and even toiletries and nappies are more than welcome (for more information and advice on what and where to donate, go to https://eastyorkshire.foodbank.org.uk).
As a town, Beverley has a long and fruitful tradition of fairs and markets going back centuries - it has been at the heart of the surrounding rural industries for generations. Events such as our festival are natural extensions to that and help to ensure traditional ways of baking, cheese-making, brewing, pickling, preserving and other methods of food production are kept alive. Food production also plays a major role in our region’s economy and it is therefore important for those of us who can support it to do so, as many livelihoods and jobs rely on opportunities like this event to both sell produce, and raise awareness of what is out there for people to purchase and enjoy throughout the year. Thanks to programmes like The Great British Bake Off and Master Chef, there is also a revolution in our kitchens, with people of all ages wanting to learn more about cooking and where their food comes from.
This year my mayoral charities are RDA (Riding for the disabled), Beverley and Crus Bereavement Counselling, local branch. Both these charities are dear to me and offer valuable services within our community, they really change people’s lives for the better. Please support the mayoral charity tombola stall at the food festival to raise much needed funds for both local charities. Many thanks to everyone who continues to support Beverley Food Festival, especially all the chefs taking part in the cookery demonstrations in the Festival Food Theatre. We are also indebted to our volunteers, funders, partners, councillors and members of staff. This is an event that we hope caters for all tastes and is the cherry on top of the local food cake. Bon appétit! Councillor Ann Willis Mayor of Beverley Whilst we have done our best to make sure that all items, information, entertainers and schedule of events are correct at the time of going to print, please note that they may be subject to change thereafter. Whilst every care has been taken in the production of this programme, Beverley Town Council and Dalton Spire cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions contained within.

WE THANK OUR SPONSORS
Acknowledgments Beverley Town Council would like to thank the following organisations for their help and support: Beverley Tickton Grange Hotel, BBC Radio Humberside, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Humberside Police, Heyha, BeverleyFM Radio, Just Beverley, Hull Daily Mail, HU17.net and Beverley Mag and everyone else who has helped and supported the event in any way. LOCAL FOOD AWARDS 2017 This year, Beverley Food Festival has revised the way it is judging the winning produce.
There will also be Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. The judging panel will consist of experienced judges such as HEYHA Chair Paul Vinsen, Food and Drink writer Roy Woodcock , Food Festival Chefs, The Mayor of Beverley, Councillor Ann Willis and Town Clerk, Helen Watson.
As there are now so many stalls selling such a wide variety of produce, to include categories covering all possibilities would make the competition less inclusive. This year the awards will instead go back to basics, with no specific categories. Every local producer at the festival has been invited to submit an item of food to be assessed on its own merit.
The Awards will be presented in the Food Theatre Marquee at the Food Festival on Sunday 1st October. Good luck both to those who entered the competition and to the judges, who will have a no doubt delicious, but difficult task of deciding who will be the winners!
There will also be one overall “Best in Show” that will be crowned the best example of locally produced food that the Beverley Food Festival has to offer.
“It has been a pleasure for me to be able to cook and be a part of at this great Food Festival over the years, and showcase some of the wonderful produce from the food producers we have around the East Riding.” James Mackenzie, Chef, The Pipe & Glass Inn, South Dalton

Beverley – The Dining Room of East Yorkshire In recent years, Beverley has gained an enviable reputation as something of a hot spot for good food! People from far and wide visit the town, eager to have a meal in one of the many and varied restaurants that have become so important to our local economy. From chef-managers using local produce and speciality ethnic food, to national high-street eateries and small finedining independents, Beverley caters for all tastes. Alongside restaurants, there is also a strong and vibrant cafe culture, with an eclectic range of coffee houses and tea shops throughout the town. Whether it’s a traditional home made Where else can you enjoy a pint of proper ale in a historic, gas-lit tavern and within two minute walk be in a modern bar serving cocktails. Our town has always had a higher than average number of pubs, with many now diversifying into food to ensure their ongoing success. Whether it be stone baked pizzas and topped burgers, or home-made pies with proper chips, there really is something for all the family, with pubs located not just in the town centre, but also serving the community in residential areas of the town. cream tea or a hearty locally-source ploughman’s lunch, there is something to suit all palate and purses. Whilst the majority of our cafes are independent, each with their own unique style and offer, once again high street names are also available. Beverley also has a plethora of pubs, many of them being historic as inns and public houses have played a significant role in the town’s history and its success as a thriving market town. As the dining room of East Yorkshire, we hope that whilst attending the Food Festival, you take the opportunity to have a bite or a drink in one of our restaurants, cafes or pubs. Alternatively, why not visit Beverley another day, take in the rest of what our historic town has to offer and relax in one of our many celebrated establishments. For those of us lucky enough to live here, we know how fortunate we are to have so much choice quite literally on our doorsteps.

The ‘Cultural’ Cook Off Challenge! One of our highlights is the annual Cook Off between presenters from BBC Radio Humberside, supported by local chefs.
They will be working under the supervision of celebrated chefs, John Robinson from Beverley’s own Whites and Ben Cox from the Star@Sancton.
As we embrace the City of Culture year in Hull, we welcome BBC Radio Humberside’s ‘On the Road’ presenter, Phil White (pictured right) and ‘Westenders’ presenter Jonathan Parker (far right), who will be causing culinary chaos in the Cookery Theatre Marquee, as they go head-to-head to see who is named the 2017 champion!
Local panto legend Tony Peers will compare the competition, which always draws a big crowd, so make sure you get into the Food Theatre marquee early to be guaranteed a place. An event not to be missed!

They will be cooking in front of a live audience at the final, and each will prepare a main course and dessert they have designed using local produce in just 30 minutes!
As well as the HEYHA Copper Saucepan Award, the finalists are also cooking for a cash prize of £300 for the winner and £100 for the runner up, kindly sponsored by A.E. Purdy Ltd, specialist suppliers of fresh fish. In addition, both will be enrolled into the Craft Guild of Chefs and spend a day in the kitchens at the award winning Winteringham Fields Restaurant.
The dishes will then be judged by a panel that includes Paul Vinsen (Chair HEYHA), Helen Watson (Beverley Town Clerk) and Phil Dixon (Chef Lecturer, Hull College).
Good luck to Ellie and Reece – we look forward to witnessing your culinary talents first hand in the Cookery Theatre Marquee.

The Beverley Food Festival Story
A Recipe for Success, Cooking up the 12th Beverley Food Festival! Founded by Beverley Town Council in 2006, Beverley Food Festival has gone from strength to strength. Starting with 35 carefully selected stalls at the first event and growing to 135 stalls at this year’s event – all with the same ethos of celebrating local produce, its growers and producers, for the benefit of the town’s residents and visitors. The Food Festival as a community event is free to attend, and open and accessible to everyone. It’s this unique approach that has led the award winning Beverley Food Festival to become the largest, and most successful, free to attend food festival in the region, if not the country. Beverley Town Council continues to innovate and inspire, and new events have been introduced and sustained through support from the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces ‘Local Food’ programme, which provided two years of funding for the Town Council’s ‘From Field to Table’ project. These events still continue and include: the Christmas Festival of Food & Drink, held in November inside the gothic majesty of Beverley Minster; The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) Open Allotments Day, held at Queensgate and Kitchen Lane allotments in July. Part of the successful ‘From Field to Table’ project was the creation of a community training allotment plot at Sparkmill in Beverley.

This is now being used and enjoyed by local charity FIND2 and other community groups. Beverley Food Festival is a self -funded event, and it is grateful to receive sponsorship from local businesses. It is also a great opportunity for Beverley Town Council and its partners to say how proud we are to have won the REYTA award 2016 for the ‘Remarkable Large Tourism Event. More recently, last year’s event was awarded a Countryside Alliance, Rural Oscar for Tourism for the North of England and a commendation at National level. With a judging panel that included The Rt Hon Andrea Leadsom MP (at the time Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). British Food Fortnight also commented on Beverley Food Festival with celebrated chef Raymond Blanc OBE, This was a wonderful triumph for Beverley. The following is a quote from Chef Raymond Blanc . “This is a great event and it has obviously grown in popularity and its offering over the years. What a good example for others to follow. This is the perfect way to in-volve local suppliers and farmers to get in front of their community and I would be keen to know how many of them got on having been involved. A fantastic event that I am sure will continue to grow and grow.” To be recognised at a national level in this way is a huge achievement for the small team at Beverley Town Council who organise the Beverley Food Festival with hard work, commitment and enthusiasm. Well done to all concerned! The photographs on these pages illustrate the story of Beverley Food Festivals. Many partners have been involved along the way, including chefs, stallholders, civic dignitaries, schools, colleges, businesses, the Chamber of Trade, The Real Ale Festival, the Beverley Literature Festival, and volunteers. We would like to thank them for their support and enthusiasm in helping make the event a successful and enjoyable occasion year after year. It brings the town’s residents together, boosts the local economy, engages with all ages, and really puts Beverley on the tourist map.

BEVERLEY ROCKS FOR A GOOD CAUSE Over the summer, Beverley Rocks has been a wonderful community phenomenon. Organisers will have a stall at the Food Festival, with the aim of raising funds for a very good cause.
Darcee-Ella will need to make her life as comfortable as possible and Beverley Rocks and Yorkshire artists have come together to help raise money for the purchase of specialty custom equipment to help make Darcee-Ella’s life a little bit more comfortable.
Beverley Rocks started out as a small community project in kindness. The idea was simple: Paint a rock; put a note on the back of the rock that says, “You found me. Keep or re-hide. Please post a photo to Beverley Rocks Facebook page” then weather-proof and hide the rock and wait for someone to find your rock and post a photo on Facebook.
Artists, including Neil Halyard and Claire West, have donated rocks to be raffled to raise money for DarceeElla. Beverley Rocks will be displaying and selling raffle tickets during the food festival, with the raffle being held live one week later.
The Facebook page was set up in early July with the first rocks hidden around Beverley and outlying villages. Within a couple of weeks the idea had caught on and families all over East Yorkshire started painting and hiding rocks, and the Beverley Rocks Facebook page grew from a few friends in early July to more than 20,000 members by late August.
We look forward to everyone stopping by our stand, looking at our beautiful rocks, buying a raffle ticket, and learning how you too can get involved in spreading kindness through painted rock. Get involved by painting some food festival themed rocks and hide them around the town prior to the event on 1st October.
Beverley Rocks has had an amazing impact on the families who are painting and hiding rocks together and the Beverley Rocks Facebook group has become a warm, caring and responsive community within itself. Through friends of Beverley Rocks, we have discovered some amazing artists in our region and we have also discovered a local family who we are moved to help. Four year old Darcee-Ella Cawthorne was recently diagnosed with Battens, a life limiting illness, with life expectancy between six and twelve years. There is a large amount of specialty equipment
Happy Rock Hunting to all you Beverley Rockers!

Established in 1999, Beverley Town Council is the grassroots tier of local government, nearest to the residents it serves. It is a publicly-elected body that represents the town of Beverley and employs five members of staff (Town Clerk, Deputy Town Clerk, Administrative Assistant, Town Handyperson and Macebearer). Beverley Town Councillors are always happy to listen to suggestions to improve the town. Our resources are not enormous but we endeavour to provide the best service we can through our staff and the volunteers who work with us. We are all justifiably proud of our town and as a Town Council will continue to do our very best for all who live and work here. 14 elected Town Councillors have been in place since May 2015 and they will serve a 4 year term in office with elections taking place in May 2019.
five allotments sites, Skatepark, the Beverley Food Festival and the Christmas Festival of Food and Drink. Christmas Lights and the Switch on event, Beverley in Bloom, NGS Open Allotment Day, Civic and Community events, Beverley Youth Coalition, financially supporting street lighting and litter bins, grit bins, distribution of money to local community groups via a grants fund and providing practical support to a number of other events and initiatives. It also has representation on a number of local strategic organisations, committees and community groups/initiatives. Responsibilities, such as council tax, council housing, parking, street cleaning, schools, roads, pathways, leisure services, libraries, social services, education, etc. are managed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The parish of Beverley itself is split into the four wards of Minster North, Minster South, St Mary’s East and St Mary’s West. In total, 14 Councillors cover these wards.
Beverley Town Council is there to help give the town a special identity and organise and support many activities that, whilst not statutory, add to the local economy, culture and social wellbeing. Some of these include:
The organisation is headed by The Mayor of Beverley, who is one of the councillors elected by their fellow councillors and acts as chairman of the council on an annual basis. This is an historic role with local significance, as the Mayor acts as an ambassador and civic figurehead for the town. The roles of both the Mayor and Town Councillors are unpaid, although a £250 annual allowance is offered to each member to support them in their duties.
Beverley in Bloom This is a group of wonderful volunteers who work together, with council support, to brighten up the town. The committee is made up of volunteers, councillors and council staff. They are responsible for many of the floral displays around the town, culminating in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition, which takes place in summer.
The Town Council is responsible for a range of services and events, including the management of

The group is always looking for willing volunteers to help raise funds, plant beds, support administration, marketing and help with future strategy. Come and join the happy band and add some colour to the town!
Minster North Ward Cllr Peter Astell (Labour) Cllr Ben Cooper (Labour) Cllr Phil Dodsworth (Independent) Saint Mary’s East Ward Cllr Tom Astell (Independent) Cllr Rob Begnett (Independent) Cllr David Elvidge (Conservative) Cllr Duncan Jack (Independent)
The Christmas Lights Committee The Christmas Lights committee meets throughout the year supported by the Town Council to arrange the Christmas lights switch-on, throughout the town, in late November. The committee is made up of volunteers, councillors and council staff.
Saint Mary’s West Ward Cllr Elaine Aird (Conservative) Cllr Nick Machen (Beverley Party) Cllr Bryan Pearson (Conservative)
In addition, the Beverley Christmas Lights Appeal Group arranges fundraising events, such as fashion shows, concerts, quizzes, bingo nights, beetle drives and flower demonstrations during the year to raise funds to pay for the lights. Why not get involved? The more people who volunteer, the more funds we can raise and brighter the lights will be.

Beverley Food Festivals Beverley Food Festivals are one of many events organised and held by Beverley Town Council for the benefit of the whole community, residents, businesses and visitors to the town. Beverley Town Council is proud to present these award winning events in conjunction with the community and sponsor groups who work together to improve the local economy and essentially help keep our beautiful, historic market town alive!
Administrative Assistant Libby Woodhouse Handyman Mike Andrew Macebearer Peter Nendick
We encourage volunteers to come forward to help with the organisation of the event and provide practical support through the year, and also on the day.
