AT KIRK
A third of homeowners have made more than £50,000 on their property during the duration of the coronavirus pandemic, according to online property platform Zoopla.
Melanie Smith, Bellway Yorkshire’s sales director, said: “Demand for homes in the West Hull villages is incredibly high. We’ve sold out ahead of schedule in Swanland; are 80 per cent sold at Tranby Park in Anlaby; are selling faster than we can build in Brough and South Cave; and judging by the opening weekend, Kirk Ella is going to prove as Comprisingpopular.”
“Our reputation for building homes that buyers love is long established,” added Melanie. “And we don’t just stop there –we’re here to create homes and communities that people will love in an environment that they’ll be proud to call home.” For further information on Parson’s Croft in Kirk Ella call 01482 904242 or go to www.bellway.co.uk
House & Home
The value of UK homes combined has also passed the £10 trillion mark for the first time, based on the value of Britain’s 29.5 million homes adding nearly a 15% increase in value of £1.3 trillion during the pandemic.
Richard Donnell, executive director at Zoopla, said: “The boom in demand for homes created by the pandemic has pushed the value of homes higher. The gains over the last year are the largest since 2006 but they are far from uniform “An exodus of older workers from the labour market over the pandemic, together with more working from home, is driving more households to look further afield for their next home to get greater value for money.
With the average UK household income £34,100, some properties are making more than their owners
two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom homes, Parson’s Croft has been designed to appeal to buyers from all walks and stages of life – from first time buyers through to growing families and on to downsizers. Launch prices range from £239,995 for a three-bed semi-detached home to £420,995 for a four-bed detached property.

EXCITEMENTOPENING ELLA Bellway Homes says the opening weekend of its new Kirk Ella development, Parson’s Croft was one of its busiest ever. The 204-home development, which is being built within walking distance of the historic village centre, opened on August 6th and attracted a rush of visits from would-be house buyers; with the first reservations being made within hours of opening.
“Not everyone has seen home values increase. Affordability is holding back prices in London and southern England and our analysis reveals the centre of gravity of the housing market is shifting Throughoutnorthwards.”the UK, Wales has seen the greatest increase in value, up 22%, followed by the North West and South West - both with gains of 20%. In London however, the increase is just 7%, less than half the national average as affordability factors, the impact of the pandemic and working from home dented the demand for homes, especially in high value inner areas of London and also the market for apartments as homeowners looked for affordable outdoor space. The greatest value of homes are located in London and the South East which account for 23.5% the of all the value of UK homes, but weaker growth means the share of housing wealth has fallen from 26% Zoopla’spre-pandemic.ValueofHousing report takes into account the change in value of every home in the UK. Using Zoopla’s valuation estimate, it monitors the rise and fall of prices.
The average UK home has risen by £48 per day over that period with 9.4 million homes hitting or surpassing the £50,000 benchmark.
However, Londoners although watching skyrocketing increases in their bricks and mortar, have not benefitted as much in relative terms as the impetus for gains has shifted northwards in Britain.

Autographed items can be worth a look at but be careful as not all autographs are what they seem. Any sporting personality still alive will not be as valuable as one who has passed away. I was on a cruise ship and one afternoon there was a sale of sporting goods and memorabilia. It consisted of a number of autographed items including photographs, sports shirts, footballs, racing driver gloves, boxing gloves etc of sportsmen who had been retired for 20 – 30 years. The items were not from the time of playing and had never been in a competitive match, so they are not worth as much as the original sporting Ifitems.you can tie an item to a particular moment in time to a player or incident, then it will be more valuable e.g., scoring the winning goal in a cup final match. However, items like this rarely come up for sale to the general public.

Q: What makes an item valuable?
A couple of days ago I was ‘channel hopping’ hoping to find something worth watching on the television.

Antiques & Collectables Rob Walls and Janette Wilkinson share their love of all things collectable... Rob Sporting memorabilia is a growing area of collecting and probably one of the most difficult to value.
l Check any autographed item for its provenance, there are many fakes about.
A: Success, history, achievement, personal goal, rarity. I recently bought some sporting items at a car boot sale. The first item is a silver watch fob inscribed with Workington NUFC; it’s a fob from a fan who happened to live in the North of England, and it has no real value. The second item is a match ticket from the 3rd Round FA Cup tie between Workington and Manchester United, Saturday 4th January 1958. Had this been a normal football season there would be very little interest or value. But this match was one month before the Busby Babes were killed in the Munich Air Disaster and Manchester United went on to win the FA Cup that year. So, it is its history and memory of the tragic air disaster that makes it collectable to the football fan. As a football fan, I glass drinking boot with all the names of the players from the same world cup game. Both items are collectable to the respective fans. The abandoned coronation of Edward VIII was due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. Preparations had already begun, and souvenirs were on sale, including plates. On 12th May 1937, Horatio ‘Raich’ Stratton Carter, aged just 23, captained his hometown team Sunderland to a FA Cup final victory against Preston North End, scoring the second in a 3-1 win. To celebrate the FA cup final souvenirs were sold. Football lettering was added to the now incorrect coronation plates (Edward abdicated in December 1936) and these plates were sold outside Wembley before the final. I am sure that a happy Machem purchased a plate and, very carefully, took it home on the train for his wife. It was a great reminder of a FA Cup victory and also a cancelled coronation. The current value for a plate like this is approximately £50. I have a Duncan Fearnley Colt cricket bat signed by team members from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Nottingham. I think Clive Lloyd, of Lancashire, is the most famous name on the bat. Its value is approximately £50.
l Do the dates add up? Was that item available at the time of the player’s career?
l A winning team item will always make more than the item from the losing team.
Sporting Memorabilia September 2022 Get Your Business Noticed
Janette I know very little about sporting memorabilia and it always surprises me how much things are sold for. I have bought a couple of items but only as gifts. I once bought my sister the FA Cup final programme from 1972 when Leeds United beat Arsenal. It even had some grass from the old Wembley pitch inside the middle pages. I picked it up cheap at a car boot sale. She was a huge Leeds supporter and it had pictures and information about the great players at the time – Allan (Sniffer) Clarke, Norman (bites yer legs) Hunter, Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, Eddie Gray . . . I also tried to buy her a signed football signed by the players from the same era. I stopped bidding when the auction price reached £180 – it was a flat ball, and the signatures were faded. I think the ball went for about £250.
l A moment in history will affect the price of sporting memorabilia even if they are not related.
I hit upon the end of a Dickinson’s Real Deal Special. A lady was selling a bundle of vintage football programmes and the dealer offered her £150. She went to auction and got £4,600. There must have been some rare items in that bundle. After a quick look on auction sites and google, I have found out that the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold was a New York Yankees baseball jersey worn by Babe Ruth during the 1920 season. It sold for $4,415,658 (£3,273,305) in 2012. A quick check on an auction website and I have found out that you can own a unique Muhammad Ali Signed WBA Belt for £55,000 or an Alistair Cook signed cricket ball for £80.99.

What’s On As Beverley Minster once again prepares to open its doors to its very popular and successful fund raising event - the Vintage & Retro Fair we ask the question why is vintage so popular..
The celebrity factor Like or not, in the past few years, the renaissance of vintage may in part be attributable to the fact so many celebrities have been photographed and appear in newspapers and magazines and on the Internet happily wearing vintage in public. This, in many people’s minds then, has helped underline the reality there’s no barrier at all to wearing vintage and looking entirely with-it and modern – and with that, using vintage clothes to help carve out and express one’s own style and individual dress sense. Self-expression Maybe most of all, though, vintage/ retro is enjoying an undeniable time in the sun right now because it’s an enabler - it ensures its enthusiasts can be enthusiasts of themselves; that is, of their own sense of style and fashion and how they wish to be seen - how they want to present themselves to the outside world and what about their own personalities they want to share through how they dress. It can be - flying in the face of homogenous high-street garments - about self-expression. And, through that, about liberation and free-styling. Many people turn to and develop an interest in vintage/ retro through seeking out or, by accident rather than design, discovering that one piece that they have to have, which becomes that favourite in their wardrobe they constantly pull out and mix and match with so many other things. That, of course, is outthethemdoorcanonlinefairs, worldintothembutwonderful, itcanleadfurtherthewideofvintageshopsandsellers;itbecomeathatopensuptoallpossibilitiesthere.

Amongst other factors, the current economic climate appears to have contributed to the trend of acquiring and reusing vintage clothing, accessories, and homeware products, particularly with young consumers. The popularity of vintage has also been linked to a change in consumer attitudes towards wearing and utilising second-hand goods. In addition to a change in attitudes, other factors that contribute to the growth of the vintage trend include a change in values, the inclusion of vintage inspirations used in current designs by fashion designers, and in the trends marketed by the forecasting sector, eco-sustainability, the media, and technology. Also vintage consumers and vintage retailers appear to share the viewpoint of the movement towards vintage fashion that has been assisted by a reaction against mass-produced fast fashion, as consumers strive for more individuality in their styling and garments. Eco-fashion and sustainable fashion ideals have emerged as solutions to the environmental issues that are currently inherent in the industry’s manufacturing processes, which have government and pressure group support. This ideal and practice complements the vintage trend phenomenon.
Vintage is everywhere. When you think about it; that’s rather a silly statement. Of course, vintage is everywhere – as soon as something’s been around for a while it effectively becomes ‘vintage’, being replaced by something newer that’s the latest flavour of the month. By definition then, vintage is everywhere – so let’s embrace it!

Depending on how far back your memory goes you may remember DS models being badged Citroen, but since they were hived off to become a stand-alone brand (within the Peugeot/Citroen group) they have really cemented their position as offering luxury cars with a Thedifference.all-newDS4, just released to UK customers, is available in three distinct variants: DS - a versatile, premium, hatchback; Performance Line - sporting a more athletic look; and DS Cross - with SUV-inspired styling cues, including side skirts, gloss black roof bars, front and rear skids and black bumpers. Engine-wise, there’s a 130hp 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 diesel for those still addicted to the black pump; three conventional PureTech petrol units (a three cylinder turbo 1.2-litre unit with 130hp; and two 1.6-litre powerplants, with either 180 or 225hp) and although there’s no no full-electric variant, there is a plugin Hybrid, which I was testing here. It’s a smooth, quiet and powerful engine - a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor powered by a 12.4kWh battery for a combined output of 225hp and an electric-only driving range of 31 Themiles.acceleration is smooth and there are numerous driving modes, including electric only, hybrid, eco, normal and sport. As I say, a really nice car to drive and be in. There are a few downsides, though, and it’s only fair to mention these; after all, we are talking about a car which sits in a price range from £26,860 to £42,200. So, not cheap Mythen.major gripe was the lack of space in the boot which, for a car that appears so big on the road, leaves you struggling once you go above the requirements of fitting in a large weekly shop from the Cabinsupermarket.spacein the rear seats is a little tight, too, also headroom may be a problem for taller occupants. And lastly - and I do love all the technology - I became frustrated at the way the main touchscreen responded. I’m happy to accept this
The information viewed doesn’t just get projected on to the windscreen; instead it’s projected further out on to your view of the road in a range four metres ahead and on an image 21 inches wide.
The New DS4 Sparkles A new car in the fast lane when it comes to the latest technology is the new DS4. Roy Woodcock road tests a Hybrid version.. September 2022 Get Your Business Noticed
The ride, though, is where it really scores and if longer journeys and motorway treks are the norm, this could be the car for you - one of the smoothest rides I have experienced. It has an Active Scan Suspension system which scans the road ahead as you drive, over a distance of between five and 25-metres and alters damping, dependent on the state of the tarmac.
Motoring “Your car; it’s got really funny lights,“ my wife said to me after following her home from a trip to the coast (we were using two cars because we had family staying, including two grandkids). “They seem to twinkle; I’ve never seen anything quite like them,” I was Iinformed.thinkwhat she was driving at, in a roundabout sort of way, was that here was a car - and we’re talking about the brand new DS4 - that truly does have a stand-out appearance. Including those lightsthey do sparkle. This is a French-built luxury car challenging more established front-runners from the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes and does look genuinely classy. And in a word, Itsdifferent.elegant, the long bonnet makes the silhouette appear dynamic, the roof stretches down very low on a steeply sloping rear window, while from the rear it looks very muscular. I love the contrasting black roof which really helps the car stand out and the nicest touch of all - the flush-fitting door handles which pop out when you blip the key fob approaching the car (they recede again once you’re underway).
Inside, the style gurus have been at it again - the screens (including a main 10-inch touchscreen) and everything associated with them you’ll love if you’re an Apple devotee while the heads-up display really is state of the art. It’s claimed to be closer to augmented reality than any other system.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you hanker back to the simplicity of cars from days gone by when there were simple knobs and switches to turn or However, flick.there is an air of exclusivity about this car and this brand - you still don’t see too many of them on the road and overall the plusses did outweigh those niggles. * For more information please visit www.dsautomobiles.co.uk
17 Motoring To Advertise Please Telephone 01964 552 470 is merely a case of getting used to the system but I found it slow to respond when frantically tapping the screen to bring up a particular function (not good at speed). To help minimise this problem DS has fitted a second smaller touchscreen just in front of the armrest that allows you to shortcut to different applications, but in reality, I found this to be more distracting than simply using the main screen.

She continued: “The Italian love of simple yet high-quality seasonal food and large family get-togethers underpins these wines, often served in simple glasses and with little fuss despite their quality.”
The red first, Brindisi Rosso Vigna Flaminio, Vallone 2018 (£8.95), from producer Vallone’s Flaminio estate in Puglia, on Italy’s heel, is made from carefully-tended Negroamaro (80 per cent) and Malvasia Vera bush vines. Looking specifically at wines under £10, I’ve picked a red to recommend but also a white wine and a Prosecco.
The palate is full and textured with pronounced minerality and delicate ripe fruit flavours leading to a long, spicy finish. Pairs perfectly with fish and seafood (especially if it’s Italian) and with white meat and cheese.
“The climate has been helping more and more to match that French production,” he added. Researchers noted that the best regions to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes - two of the staples for Champagne makingwill shift northwards away from France. Quality still red wine could even become possible due to environmental projections, they said, calling this “a holy grail”.
The sheer scale of the choice when it comes to the wines of Italy can be more than a little confusing but with this promotion, Wine

Closer to home, the UK could unseat top wine-producing regions Champagne and Burgundy in France due to the effects of climate change, according to a new study. The “Climate Resilience in the UK Wine Sector” study found that rising temperatures over the coming years could make Britain a major player in quality wine Lookingproduction.atclimate projections, researchers said temperatures in the UK wine-growing regions may rise by 1.4 degrees Celsius by 2040 - on top of the one degree rise since the 1980s. This will mean the amount of sugar in UK grapes would be more consistent with better wine quality and higher alcohol content, they said.
“Production here in the UK has been able to produce sparkling wines that are of a style that are very similar to those produced in Champagne,” said lead researcher Professor Stephen Dorling.

But the surprise may be that this is from Romania. “We sometimes have a bet that no one can guess the cost of the wine when tasted blind - with this absolute beauty we were all well out!,” said the House of Townend team.
Animus Douro 2019 Price: £5.49 Where: Aldi When: Now Why: Maybe it is because we’ve got a brand new Aldi open right on our doorstep, but I’ve been tasting and buying more of their wines of late. And this Portuguese red is a bit of a revelation and certainly good value.

Master of Wine Sarah Knowles, the society’s wine-buyer specialising in Italian wines, told me: “Generalising about such a huge array of wines is difficult, but if anything unites them it’s a certain lack of pretension: these are wild, unencumbered joys, whose grapes and unique landscapes shine through.”
“In this country, we’ve not been renowned for the production of still red wines, but the changing climate is providing a prospect for that,” wrote Prof Dorling.
Finally, it has to be a bottle of Prosecco and this one, Prosecco Brut Duecento (£9.50) from North East Italy is a value for money choice in a market where there are some pretty uninspiring examples about.

The Red of My Blood by Clover Stroud Clover Stroud is a writer and journalist, writing regularly for the Sunday Times, the Guardian and the Telegraph. A few weeks before Christmas 2020, Clover’s sister died of breast cancer, aged 46. Just days before, she had fearlessClover’schartsMyThelifeClover’sdeathsuddentogivenbeenyearslive.Hersplitapart.RedofBloodpassage through the first year after her sister’s death. It is a book about what life feels like when death interrupts it, and about bearing the unbearable and describing an experience that seems beyond words. Without Warning & Only Sometimes by Kit de Waal Author Kit de Waal grew up in a household of opposites and extremes. Her haphazard mother rarely cooked, forbade Christmas and birthdays, worked as a cleaner, nurse and childminder – sometimes all at once – and believed the world would end in 1975. Meanwhile, her father stuffed barrels full of treats for his relatives in the Caribbean, cooked elaborate meals on a whim waitingwereparentsBothashoessuitsondidn’tmoneysplurgedandtheyhavecars,andfitforprince.ofherforparadise.
mansion with waterside views for an attic flat shared with just her daughter in north London. Here, she finds herself elated to be alone with herself, someone she genuinely thought she might never get to see again. This is what follows when, after a life guided by romantic obsession, she decides to turn her back not only on marriage, but all romantic and sexual attachments.
It never came. Caught between three worlds –Irish, Caribbean and British – in the 1960s, Without Warning & Only Sometimes is a story of an extraordinary childhood and how a girl who grew up in house where the Bible was the only book on offer went on to discover a love of reading that inspires her to this day.

She reads Rebecca in the house her new boyfriend shared with his ex-wife and rewinds Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story to ask if you can ever have a fresh start with an old love. She writes about friends and lovers, grief and heartbreak, blood family and chosen family, and asks what more expansive definitions of love might offer us all.

even 80 – without a qualm, did she suddenly feel so furious? Shocking diagnoses, Brexit and bereavement seemed to knock her from every quarter. And that was before lockdown. Home alone, classified as ‘extremely vulnerable’, she found herself yelling at the TV and talking to pigeons. But she can at least take a good long look at life – her work and family, her beliefs (many of them the legacy of her wartime childhood) and, uncomfortable as it might be to face, her future. This is the result of that introspection.

India, one of my favourite destinations for culture and also the home of tigers and elephants. Most visitors start their Indian experiences with a tour of the Golden Triangle with a visit to the Ranthambore National Park to get a glimpse of the tigers. I would suggest a tour that includes three game drives giving you a greater chance of a viewing. You will also see monkeys here and many different birds. Let’ go cold now, what about penguins? Well Antarctica is the place. I saw five different species on my visit and learned much about their lifestyle. Our rules were you must keep 5 meters from them and not step on their highways (the channels they slide along on their tummies). Of course they can come as close to you as they wish. Sometimes making themselves at home sitting on your boots. Although the penguins are a great attraction the scenery here is stunning with icebergs towering above like blocks of flats. The time to visit Antarctica is also our winter, their summer. Polar bears are amazing to see wandering freely.

In February we will be visiting Monkey world in Dorset but really on my bucket list is Borneo. Not only for the Orangutangs but the wonderful vivid birds visable in the jungle. Taking to a boat along one of the smaller rivers you will be spoilt for choice as to what direction to point your camera. After your wildlife experience in the jungle you can relax and reflect for a few days on wonderful beaches before returning home. (I am not promising you peace from the orangutangs they are simply being monkeys!). Borneo is also a great destination to travel to for winter sunshine.
October is the time to see them up in Northern Manitoba in the little town of Churchill. You will never find a car door locked in this town. If you’re not tied to a booth all day, or have knowledgeable staff to stay with the booth, attend the workshops and seminars that are most relevant to you. Also attend the ones your potential clients may attend. By attending a workshop you’re already an expert in, you can show your expertise. Ask questions and offer insights, noting your experience in brief so you don’t sound like you’re bragging. As the expo ends, mingle with people exiting the doors or are waiting to talk to the presenters.
Talk with the presenters if you feel the relationship would benefit you. Better yet, ask the Expo organiser if you can participate on a panel during the next years event.

Offer Giveaways If you’re exhibiting at the expo, offer product giveaways to get people talking about your company. An inexpensive yet eye-catching promotional product such as a canvas tote bag serves this purpose well. Products that people will actually use work best. Alternatively, hold a raffle, giving away a prize that appeals to a broad audience.
If you are exhibiting, distinguish your stand from the crowd with a bold, eye-catching element such as illuminated signage, an eyecatching display or a giant info-graphic. Create a cohesive look by using a colour scheme focusing on one or two colours from your corporate identity throughout your display. Display literature such as brochures and catalogues prominently. Invite people and clients to your stand and to the Expo itself - as they too would benefit. If every business exhibiting brings alon 30 or more guests it increases the footfall for all the businesses involved.

Tips for Maximising a Business Expo
Talk to People You Don’t Know
You might feel drawn to talk to people you’ve met before and reconnecting with them may prove beneficial if you haven’t spoken in some time. However, focus on talking to people you’ve never met. Read the program beforehand to determine where you might find these people, so you walk in with a plan. Keep Memory Aids

Attend Workshops and Seminars
When you sort through the pile of business cards you’ve collected after the show, you won’t clearly remember many of the people you met. To jog your memory, jot down notes about each person on the card when you receive it. Note whether the person is a strong business prospect. Writing a note on the card also shows you’re truly interested in the person who gave it to you. Also make sure you have a good supply of your own cards with you!

East Yorkshire Business Expo YOUR BUSINESS, IN OUR SAFE HANDS
When you meet people you wish to talk with further, plan to have lunch or coffee. Set a date, if you can do so without being too pushy. Otherwise, plan to discuss when to meet via phone or email. 30% of business expo participants don’t follow up with their connections, which works in your favour - if other businesses don’t call your prospective clients, then they’re free to have lunch with you!

Garden jobs for September
September is the start of autumn, and we can see the garden slowing down. Some herbaceous perennials and annuals have finished for the summer, others such as roses, sweet peas may keep on flowering. Exactly what is flowering and when depends on the sort of spring and summer we have enjoyed, but there is still plenty of late colour in the garden..
Flowers Sow hardy annuals, such as ammi, cerinthes, scabiosa and cornflowers, for flowers early next summer Lift gladioli corms, dry them off, then store in a frost-free shed or garage over winter Plant wallflowers, pansies, forgetme-nots and other spring bedding in pots and borders
Potsupportsupherbs, such as chives and parsley, and place on a sunny windowsill to use during winter
Start sowing hardy varieties of broad beans and peas for early crops next year

Leave sunflower seedheads in place for birds to feed on Take cuttings from fuchsias, salvias and pelargoniums
Plant onion and shallot sets in a sunny spot, 10cm apart, with the tip just showing above the soil
Keep summer bedding flowering in hanging baskets and pots until the first frosts by deadheading and feeding regularly

TIME TO REFOCUS With the school term starting, September’s always a great time to shake off the summer holiday sluggishness and refocus on reaching our end of year goals. What do you want to do that you haven’t found time for yet? It could be to do with your work or business – or equally it might be a health and fitness goal or a decluttering the house goal. Whatever it is, don’t forget to break it down into small, manageable chunks so it’s not too overwhelming. I love September for this. There are certain times of year that feel right for recharging and getting yourself back into gear. This is one of them. So, good luck! I’d love to hear what you’re going to do.
If you, like me, were a Game of Thrones fan, then you will no doubt be filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation for the new House of the Dragon series. Excitementbecause who didn’t love Games of Thrones? Trepidation – well, there was a lot of backlash about the final season and how it ended! What did you think? Regardless, critics say it’s going to be ‘bigger, bolder and bloodier’ than Game of Thrones. It’s set 300 years before the Westeros we’ve seen before, diving into the history of House Targaryen, their family feuds and the gruesome battle for power between the heirs to the throne. And, we’ll see loads more dragons! It’s pure escapism – and I can’t wait. Have a super September everyone! Fiona x Twitter: @fionadwyer • Facebook: Fiona

DOUBLE EXAM WHAMMY
I can’t believe it’s already September and the children are going back to school. Time to get back to term-time routine. This year, we have one child doing A Levels and the other doing GCSEs. A double whammy! So, I’m looking at how best to support them so they focus on their studies, but at the same time look after their mental health and help them not get too stressed by everything. I’m not quite sure how to do that, but I’ll give it my best! Advice always welcome! So far, I’ve had, ”Yes, well, good luck with that!” Really helpful! Anyway, for all those facing exams this academic year, I wish you and your parents the best of luck.
