Graham Stuart MP Diabetes is an issue of increasing national significance. In the East Riding of Yorkshire, there are an estimated 18,400 adults living with the condition. In the Beverley and Holderness constituency, South East Holderness ward – covering Withernsea, Easington and Patrington – is in the top 1% in the country for the rate of diabetes prescriptions.

I want to understand the factors that are driving this and what we can do to address them, thinking right across the picture in terms of prevention, diagnosis and surgery. I have therefore organised a special summit to bring together these people with different We have a problem in our area with the high rate of diabetes-related insights into diabetes amputations. There were 202 amputations in the East Riding between 2012 and 2015, representing an amputation rate of 4 per thousand adults including top vascular surgeons, podiatrists, living with diabetes, compared to 2.6 across England as a whole. That means there are 60-70 people in our area who would not have lost their public health officials and patients to try to get to the limbs in the last three years had our performance been in line with the bottom of the issue. national average, let alone if it were better.

“There were 202 amputations in the East Riding between 2012 and 2015” Amputations and foot ulcers clearly have a huge impact on quality of life in terms of people’s pain, mobility, depression, relationships and ability to work. Up to 80 per cent of people die within five years of having an amputation.

We’re going to focus on what are the drivers of such an appalling loss of people’s mobility and any failures of treatment that are leading to it. What I hope will come out of the day is a programme and a vision that will ensure we improve the quality of care for diabetes sufferers in Beverley and Holderness. I will keep readers posted on the outcome. Graham Stuart is the MP for Beverley and Holderness

Light Dragoon back on parade “One of Beverley’s best kept secrets The Light Dragoon in the picturesque village of Etton nestled at the foot of the Wolds has been brought back to life. After opening its doors on 24th February following a £500,000 six week refurbishment it is the place everyone is talking about. Being very popular in the past for its great food The Light Dragoon has suffered over the past few years from lack of investment. However, that is certainly not the case now. Sympathetically restored and totally rejuvenated it’s definitely worth putting on your ‘to go to’ list. With its beautiful open fires, warm rustic decor and fantastic outside drinking areas its a winner all year round. Whether you are out for a walk and fancy a cheeky glass of wine or pint of Ale, or celebrating with friends and family it certainly suites. With a top class kitchen team producing mouth-watering fresh locally sourced food day and night you wont be disappointed. With the emphasis being on Great Pub Food cooked beautifully with twists along the way under the watchful eye of our Head Chef, matched with amazing Wines and Cask Ales you will want to return again and again. The owners Malcolm and Kristi Thompson have assembled a great team of staff at the front of house too, whose relaxed and friendly approach guarantee an experience you wont forget. House prices fall as market cools in ‘correction’ House prices fell in value by 0.9pc last month as the market market started to cool, according to Halifax. This monthly fall in prices follows four consecutive months of growth, with December’s monthly rate of growth at 1.6pc. The rate of growth in the 12 months to January was 5.7pc, down from 6.5pc the annual growth rate recorded the previous month. Howard Archer, of IHS Global Insight, described the fall as a “correction”, and said that house prices will rise by no more than 3pc this year. He added: “Weakening consumer fundamentals, likely mounting caution over making major spending decisions, and elevated house price to earnings ratios are likely to weigh down on house prices. However, a shortage of supply is likely to put a hard floor under prices.” Halifax’s house price index is more volatile than Nationwide’s, which last week reported house prices rose by 0.2pc on a monthly basis in January. But both indices signal that house prices have slowed in the start of this year. Martin Ellis, Halifax housing economist, said that the annual rate of growth remained “robust” due to an “ongoing shortage of property for sale, low levels of housebuilding, and exceptionally low interest rates”. He added: “These factors are unlikely to change materially during 2017.” Meanwhile, house builder Bellway is ploughing more investment into land, rising 21pc from a year earlier to £380m. It reported that it completed 6.5pc more homes in the six months to the end of January compared to the same period last year. It also increased its forward order book by 9pc to £1.1bn, boosted by the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, which helps first-time buyers with a 5pc deposit to purchase newly built homes. Ted Ayres, the chief executive, said: “Market conditions remain positive and accordingly Bellway is continuing to invest in a controlled manner, both in land and work in progress”.

Hula Wallpaper by Barbara Hulanicki There is a home interiors trend kicking around at the moment for Monochrome. And I’m loving it! So much so that I decided to hunt out some fabulous monochrome wallpaper for this House & Home feature in Beverley Mag. If you’re familiar with Barbara Hulanicki’s signature style you’ll recognise this straight away. She also designs a clothing range for Asda so maybe you’ve seen it there! I love it. It’s very 1920’s/30’s styling and think it looks amazing in the black and white. Don’t think for a minute this will be dull and boring. Just look at the lifestyle shots above and see how combined with one bright colour the whole look can be changed. The warmth and vibrancy of the pop of orange lifts the whole look and makes if fun and very modern. Now if black and white isn’t your thing but you’re liking the style and the pattern then why not take a look at it in another colourway. Available also in green, with a distinct metallic sheen this might appeal to those of you who like to do your wallpaper a little less bold. Still stylish, still gorgeous just not so dramatic.

SOFA TRENDS 2017 If you’re making plans to update your home this year, are you checking out the hot new sofa trends 2017? I know I’ve been busy making notes about the rooms I want to decorate over the next few months, which might even include a kitchen renovation (better start saving) and so I’m thinking about the looks and trends I might like to adopt. For me, sofas can make or break the look of the living space. Whether you’re in your main lounge, an open plan living/dining space, a bedroom, den or playroom, a sofa can really set the scene and offer some incredible wow factor to any scheme. My lovely chocolate brown mid-century styled leather sofas are probably old hat now, but there’s years of life left in them now, and I still absolutely love them so they’re not going anywhere soon. PATTERNED Patterned sofas and chairs have been gaining momentum over the last couple of years and have definitely taken their place in the market. And they make a remarkable statement in any room. It’s up to you how you dress it. My own preference would be to keep everything

10 BeverleyMag March 2017

else simple. Plain cushions and throws and then a backdrop that really allows the pattern to shine. I wouldn’t want anything else to compete too much with its vibrancy. PASTELS Another trend that’s really taken its place in the last few years, is the use of pastels in our home interiors. And now its made its way into sofas which is why I had to include it in the new sofa trends 2017. Subtle, charming and wonderfully elegant, a pastel sofa or chair will really bring a little sophistication into your living room. This wasn’t a trend I liked at all about a year ago, but these softer colours have really grown on me, particularly when paired up with metallics and plenty of greenery. VELVET I can’t tell you home much I’m in love with all velvet interiors and accessories at the moment. I may have just snuck in a few new velvet cushions (more on that in an upcoming post) and they are diving. So how about treating yourself to a beautiful new velvet sofa? It’s decadent, luxurious and packed full of texture. Combine it with a bang on trend deep rich green or blue and you have yourself the perfect sofa for 2017. Words: Jacqui Beale, Interior Designer.

PROPERTY COLUMN

Should I wait as the market cools – will I miss my dream home? Whilst out and about recently someone mentioned that they had read, ‘house prices will ‘cool’’. They asked the question ‘what does this mean for me should I be buying now or should I wait?’ Before answering this I researched several different sources including Dataloft, Land Registry, Bank of England, Zoopla and Office of National Statistics. The headline was ‘forecasted cool’, however digging deeper into the article I noticed even if there is a ‘cool’ there is still the potential for growth. The Halifax Economist, Martin Ellis, stated “The quarterly and annual rates of house price growth remain robust even though they are lower than in spring 2016”. Focusing on Beverley, Dataloft suggests that house prices grew by an average 7.2% in the year to December 2016 whilst Zoopla identify that over the past 3 months there was an average increase of £1633.

So back to the question of buying or waiting – as I have mentioned before I don’t have crystal ball and I cannot predict the future. But buying a home to most people is one of the most expensive asset people buy. Most potential buyers have a variety of different wish list points which their new home must have. However, a house is not just bricks and mortar, it is a home. If you find your dream home, there is no guarantee that it may be available later. Therefore, you may miss out on your dream home. Also, if a ‘cool’ does occur, sellers may respond by not putting their homes on the market. Therefore, your possible pool to select your dream home is reduced. In conclusion to the question ‘should I wait as the market cools – will I miss my dream home?’ perhaps the question should be ‘do you wish to miss out on your dream home?’. Until next month take care. Michael Allison, Director of Martin & Co (Beverley) 12 BeverleyMag March 2017

Fairtrade Village all Signed Up Campaigners in Cherry Burton are celebrating after “Fairtrade Village signs were erected by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council on each of the four roads leading into the village. Thanks to the generous support of village-based businesses who funded the signs, the village now has visible reminders of its status for residents and visitors alike. Placing of the signs will fulfil the aim of raising awareness in the local community of the impact that choosing Fair Trade makes on people in the developing world. Cherry Burton has been a Fairtrade Village for 13 years, and was the first community in the East Riding to be awarded Fairtrade Village status. Widespread support by individuals, organisations and businesses has meant that status has been successfully maintained over the years. Businesses who sponsored the signs include I Love Kitchens, Elm Tree Farm Bed & Breakfast, Tom Ainley Plumber;, Kwikjet Cleaning Services, North Bar Fabrics, Stanifords.com and Burton Mount Country House.

MINDING THE MINSTER

In fact, we were burning last year’s palm crosses to make the ash for this year’s Imposition of Ashes services, held on Ash Wednesday. On that day, which was the 1st of March, people recieved the mark of a cross on their foreheads. This symbolises the idea of “dust to dust”, acknowledging death, and the turning to God for comfort and guidance. Most people know the day before Ash Wednesday better: Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday (or Mardi Gras, “Fat Tuesday”), the Rio and Venetian Carnivales....all ahead of the penitential season of Lent in which we are now knee-deep. Lent is a time of self-sacrifice and preparation during which we aniticipate the arrival of Easter, reflecting about the 40 days and nights Jesus spent alone in the wildreness being tempted by the Devil, leading to his crucifixion. Sometimes we give up vices for Lent as our own sacrifice, and to help us concentrate on God. A recent trend is, rather than giving up something, adding something positive to our lives, such as volunteering somewhere to have the sacrifice of time and talent serve the wider community.

14 BeverleyMag March 2017

However you are spending these six weeks between Ash Wednesday and Easter (giving up chocolate? Alcohol? Meat? Maybe doing a fundraising walk or visiting the elderley in a care home?), we hope you spend some of it with us here at the Minster. While we cannot office the excitement of another fire in the churchyard, please do check the website for our services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. (And if you DO spot anything ablaze, please call the fire brigade!) Robyn Cleveland - Head Virger

Photo: Nick Hedges

On a recent dry but cold Saturday, in the churchyard of Beverley Minster, my Assistant Virger, George, and I built a fire. It was a small but enthusiastic fire, however of the 50 or so people who walked past during the blaze, not one of them asked us what we were doing. Weenie roast? Toasting marshmallows? Sacrificing virgins? Keeping warm?

Why York is the perfect city for a family day out York offers a big slice of the national curriculum, all in one place, with evidence of Romans, Normans and Tudors. Then there’s the ghosts, Harry Potter association and chocolate. And you don’t have to spend a fortune: the best attractions - walking the city walls and cobbled streets - are free.

With the main centre due to re-open on April 8, visit the excellent display at St Mary’s Church, where you’ll come face to skull with what was an important and thriving 9th-century Viking city.

York Minster

The largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe is an impressive sight for adults, but you can keep children engaged by downloading a treasure map from the website (yorkminster.org) and testing the 1280 Chapter House whispering gallery.

What to see in York The City Walls

The easiest way to see York in one go is to walk around the medieval walls. There are around two miles still intact, but if you’re pushed for time, one of the best stretches is to jump on at Mickelgate and head north-east for views of the Minster. The steps to get up here are wide enough to take a pushchair.

The Shambles

The inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, this medieval thoroughfare was once lined with butchers, and blood was said to run down the cobbles. Today you’ll find cafes and shops. The Shambles is rumoured to be the most photographed street in England”

Jorvik Viking Centre

”Head to York with your children to discover why the Vikings have been rehabilitated into heroes for the new generation” Head to York with your children to discover why the Vikings have been rehabilitated into heroes for the new generation Vikings are heroes for the new generation - thanks, in part, to How to Train Your Dragon and the Scandi clothing invasion. Jorvik will help your children brush up on actual facts about these Nordic seafarers.

York’s Chocolate Story

This entertaining museum tells the story of our love affair with chocolate, including its popularity with the Quaker families of York - such as Rowntree and Terry - that went on to become confectioners. Did you know that Terry’s Chocolate Orange was originally an apple? Other great attractions well worth a visit whilst in York include:

l The National Railway Museum l York Art Gallery l The Museum Gardens & St. Mary’s Abbey l The Original Ghost Walk of York l Cliffords Tower l Betty’s Tea Rooms l A River Trip on The River Ouse l The Castle Museum l The Yorkshire Museum

Wedding Feature 7 ESSENTIAL WEDDING SURVIVAL TIPS Weddings are a pretty big deal and they can be kinda scary if you’re feeling anxious about being a bride. Are you stressing about being the centre of attention? Dreading speaking to vendors? Avoiding all the nosy questions? Don’t worry, we’ve found a way to cope with the stress of it all… It’s ok to not be ok Getting engaged is pretty amazing, but once the initial excitement is over, it’s not uncommon for brides to feel overwhelmed. There’s a huge amount of pressure for everything to look perfect and to get everything ‘right’. And then you get the added anxiety as you know you should feel happy about planning the most important day of your life, but in fact, when you think about it your heart drops. Is that normal? Of course it is. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad bride or you’re getting cold feet – it’s a pretty stressful time so be kind to yourself.

20 BeverleyMag March 2017

Long engagements As soon as you get engaged, people tend to start asking you the date of the wedding almost immediately. Don’t feel pressured to immerse yourself in wedding planning straightaway if you don’t want to – give yourself plenty of time, there is no rule about how long an engagement should be. Discuss with your partner about how long you need to plan the wedding and whether or not you want to tie the knot ASAP. Don’t put yourself under extra stress if you don’t need to.

Accept help If your friends and family offer a helping hand, accept it! Not only will they enjoy being part of the planning process, it’ll make your job a whole lot easier. If no-one is offering, ask for help! People often don’t want to offer help as they’re worried about getting in the way, but they’re usually more than willing to help out if needed.

Apologise for bridezilla moments You will probably become a little bit of a bridezilla in the lead-up to your wedding day. Whilst this is completely acceptable, your groom-to-be may not agree. In fact, chances are your groom is going to get the wrong idea and think you’re terrified of marrying him. Make it clear to your h2b that you’re freaking out about the catering or flowers – not about getting married.

Being in the spotlight is scary If you’re a pretty anxious person anyway, being in the spotlight probably isn’t your idea of fun. However, it is a vital part of any wedding. Even if you’re dreading being the centre of attention in the lead-up to the big day, when it comes to it you might actually surprise yourself! You’re in the limelight for all the right things, so simply make the most of it. If you really can’t face walking down the aisle on your own with all eyes on you, why not break tradition and get your hubby to walk down the aisle with you?

It’s fine to be selfish It’s probably the one time when it’s socially acceptable to be incredibly selfish – especially the week before the wedding. It’s completely ok to say no, ignore the constantly ringing phone, or conveniently ‘forget’ to reply to that text. Don’t even feel bad about it. Direct it to a helper, such as your maid of honour or your mum. They’re here to help out!

You’re going to be great When the big day arrives, you’ll probably be a bag of nerves mixed with excitement. But as soon as you walk down the aisle into your hubby’s arm, everything will fit into place and you’ll forget about everyone else in the room. Your wedding day will whizz by, so make the most of it and enjoy every second.

If you really are getting cold feet, make sure you’re marrying your best friend!

www.beverleymag.co.uk BeverleyMag 21

Something old, something new... Just where – and why – did our modern wedding traditions originate? Ah, white weddings. Traditions such as the gorgeous dress, the towering cake, and walking down the aisle are what a brides to-be’s dreams are made of. It may sound like a cocktail for the perfect wedding ceremony now, but if you got hitched a few hundred years ago when these traditions were in their infancy, you’d probably find them less than romantic. From warding off evil spirits, to stopping runaway brides, here are just a few of the reasons why we celebrate weddings in the way we do.

Origins of Marriage

So, why do we get married at all? The concept of marriage is about 4,350 years old. Anthropologists believe that before then, families consisted of large groups (around 30) of loosely related people, with several male leaders sharing a number of women and children. As hunter-gatherers started to settle into civilisations and nurture the land, they wanted smaller and more stable family units. Marriage’s primary purpose was to bind women to men, and guarantee that a man’s children were truly his. The first recorded marriage ceremonies between one woman and one man date back to 2350 BC, in Mesopotamia. Over the following several hundred years, marriage evolved into an institution recognised by the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. Interestingly, marriage had little to do with religion or love to begin with. Love became a motivating factor during the Middle Ages, whilst marriage was accepted as a sacrament by the Catholic church in the 8th century. Marriage was written into canon law at the Council of Trent in 1563. It was only later that the western world started adopting the wedding traditions we know today.

The Cake

There are several possible reasons why we have tiered wedding cakes. In Ancient Rome, bread was broken over the bride’s head to bring the couple good fortune and in Medieval England, cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. From the mid-1600s, a bride’s pie was served at most weddings. It was considered rude and bad luck not to eat it. This was eventually replaced with a bride cake made of plums or fruit cake, symbolic of fertility and prosperity. Two cakes were then made – one for the bride and one for the groom. The groom would have a fruit cake which was usually smaller than the brides, whilst the bride had a simple pound cake covered in white icing. And this is where the trend-setting Queen Vic comes in again. Sugar was very expensive, so icing really showed off the social standing and wealth of the family. When Victoria used white icing on her cake, she coined the term Royal Icing. The first modern, tiered wedding cake appeared at Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany’s wedding in 1882.

The White Dress

Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding.

22 BeverleyMag March 2017

Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert in 1840 simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first... Mary Queen of Scots wore white to marry Dauphin François of France in 1558. However, this was considered scandalous at the time, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. The veil and train, on the other hand, originated in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flame-coloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. Similarly, bouquets used to contain garlic and dill, and bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse and ward off evil spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to him at the end of the ceremony.

Something Old, New. Borrowed and Blue

This tradition is believed to date back to 1898 and comes from an Old English rhyme which says, “Something olde, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe”, all of which are lucky charms carried by the bride on the big day. Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolises borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity; and a sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity, although this last tradition does not seem to have stood the test of time. In return, guests were traditionally given five prettily-wrapped almonds to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness as favours. Nowadays, we tend to use anything from the classic sugared almonds, to CDs, to lottery tickets!

Spicy food could be the secret to a healthy heart and a longer life, says new study If you’re a fan of spicy food you’re in a luck, as a new study has suggested that eating chilli peppers could be the secret to a longer life. Researchers from the University of Vermont analysed over 16,000 American men who had completed the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1988 and 1994. They found that over a period of 19 years roughly 34 per cent of the men died, but when data was limited to just those who consumed chilli peppers this number dropped to just 22 per cent. The results, published in the journal Plos One, suggested that the 13 per cent lower risk of death could have something to do with a the ‘capsaicin’ found in the peppers. Capsaicin is commonly used in treating arthritis and works as an effective painkiller. Co-author of the study, Dr. Benjamin Litternberg explained that capsaicin component of the chillies seemed to reduce the amount of inflammation in the body: “The types of deaths that were lowest in the pepper group were deaths due to vascular disease, heart attacks and stroke.” Litternberg said his teams findings support the results of a similar 2015 study linking spicy food intake to a reduced risk of death by showing “a significant decrease in mortality associated with hot red chilli pepper consumption.” The study of nearly 500,000 Chinese people over seven years found that those who ate spicy food three times a week cut their risk of dying by 14 per cent compared with people who didn’t. However Litternberg added that correlation does not necessarily prove causation and further studies would be needed to come to a concrete conclusion on whether eat hot peppers could truly benefit your health: “There’s a whole bunch of better, stronger, more convincing ways to improve your health than to go on a chilli pepper diet.”

Marco Silva: City’s Six Month Saviour In the last column Hull City were set to appoint an unknown Portuguese manager called Marco Silva to replace Mike Phelan. Little was known of him besides a history of success in Greece and Portugal but one month on we can happily say that Marco is the man. Four consecutive home victories including Manchester United in the League Cup semi- final and Liverpool in the league, seven points out of twelve, seven new signings and great optimism within City fans.

So will City survive? There is a long way to go but from a position at the foot of the league and potentially falling adrift with games against four title contenders we are one point from safety and three

26 BeverleyMag March 2017

sides could easily be caught including Leicester City. The good news is once we have played Arsenal the only remaining title challenger to play is Manchester City and there are a number of sides coming to the KCom Stadium who City are capable of defeating such as Burnley, West Ham, Middlesborough and Sunderland. If they are capable of taking a goalless draw from Old Trafford many of the remaining away fixtures have some potential too.

“So will City survive” Hull City have 20 points and a further 18- 20 points could ensure survival. This seemed unlikely a month ago but after the recent revival this is now a possibility. The defence is far more secure, Jakupovic is excelling in goal and the midfield is both matching the

Many fans feared a transfer window clearance sale with Maguire and Robertson both linked with £10 million sales but thankfully the club resisted offers or arguably Silva put his foot down to prevent further players being sold off. One does wonder if automatically extending players contracts by email led two of them to jump ship and if players had buy out clauses associated with the new extended contracts as the clubs seemed to consider derisory offers rather than demanding high fees to put off the chasing pack. Why both players left is open to conjecture, did they fail to fit in with Silva’s plans, did they chase a big wage and long contracts or had they decide to get out of the Hull City pantomime as soon as they could. Did they make up their minds too soon as there is a good chance the club can now survive and as ever this opens up the opportunity of a takeover in the summer. We will see what happens over the next few weeks but optimism has returned.

Words by Woody Mellor

East Stand Views...

The big question for most fans is why we let these players go and why more money has not been put into strengthening the team. £25 million has come in from sales and £30 million spent in addition to the £7 million being allegedly spent on the loan signings. £12 million is still a pathetically small amount to spend to keep this team in the Premier League, if this is achieved by May. At the time of Silva’s arrival there were rumours that Gerard Lopez a millionaire friend or associate of Silva was interested in the club. He runs a Formula 1 team and is interested in buying Lille in France and potentially an English team too. Let us hope.

East Stand Views...

As with most things Hull City related we do not know how long he may remain. His contract is either 18 months with a get out clause at the end of the season or just six months. The bottom line is that he will be hot property by May and even if City survive bigger clubs in the Premier League could be sniffing around. If City do go down then he will walk but worryingly it could still be a struggle to keep him unless the miracle occurs and there is a takeover. To sign up the five loan players could cost £20 - 30 million and if players such as Ronocchia are on £70,000 a week contracts could also be an issue. Several star players were not offered contract extensions so would the current owners commit to these wages and transfer fees as the unpopular sales of Snodgrass and Livermore financed the loan deals and permanent signings of Evandro and Grosicki in January.

opposition and creating opportunities. Loan winger Lazar Markovic was a width of a post away from stealing the points in Manchester. Silva is excelling on the training pitch and the players are being given intensive coaching and learning more tactics besides everyone behind the ball home and away. Silva also has a reputation for reviving the careers of players whose careers were on the slide or developing unknowns and it is also noticeable how well Tom Huddlestone is performing, possibly the best form of his entire career and how well Harry Maguire is playing. The big worry is how long Hull City will hold on to players such as Magure, Robertson, Tymon and Hernandez.

The March Gardener It’s the busy season, so knuckle down and finish your winter work before the growing season gets under way March is the beginning of the busy season, the job list lengthening with the daylight. It can be a month of contrasts, too, with wind and frost set to challenge the first of spring growth. Knuckle down and complete winter work to make way for the tasks that are targeted at the growing season.

Crops and robbers

Order your seed potatoes as they will need time to chit before planting out. Leave them in a cool, bright room to promote the eyes. Earlies can be planted later in the month and kept covered with fleece to prevent early shoots from frost damage. Choose your sunniest position for onions and shallots as they like the heat and free drainage, and wait until the second half of the month to plant. Do not plant in freshly manured ground as they prefer soil that was improved for a previous crop. Line out in rows that are easy to weed and use a dibber to insert the sets so that their necks are just below the soil. Birds love to pull them free at this stage so net until the roots have a hold.

Pruning

Complete the pruning of wisteria, summer-flowering clematis and lateflowering shrubs such as buddleia and Russian sage. The sap is rising and you will be cutting away important energy if this is left too late. Hold off from pruning evergreens until April as they need their foliage to kickstart growth in warmer weather. Remove up to a third of spent flowering stems back to old wood on winter-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia and jasmine, as soon as the flowers fade. This will promote fresh new wood for next year.

Slug it out

Beware the slugs when new growth is susceptible, and use pellets judiciously and only where necessary. Always use an organic pellet,

32 BeverleyMag March 2017

such as ferric phosphate (harrodhorticultural.com), as they pose no risk to animals and insects. Better still, think about alternative slug-control regimes, such as growing hostas in pots or choosing the blue-leaved forms that are less susceptible.

Clean sweep

Cut back the remains of last year’s perennials and institute a thorough spring clean in the beds. There is no better time than now to winkle out weeds. Follow up with a protective mulch to keep seedlings at bay, but remember that perennial weeds will only do better for it: never turn a blind eye to couch, ground elder, nettle and creeping buttercup.

Make my dahlia

If you have overwintered dahlias inside, check that the tubers are hydrated and manure the ground that will take them next month. If the tubers are tired, pot up and start off in a glasshouse or frame with the aim of propagating from the first new growth. Cuttings are incredibly easy if taken when the shoots are just a few inches long, and with warmth they will be rooted and ready to plant out when the ground is frost-free. Re-pot pelargoniums and fuchsias that were overwintered and gently up the watering to promote new shoots. Pot up begonias and lilies, and summer-flowering bulbs such as gladiolus.

Lawn order

The grass has barely stopped growing this winter so set the mower high and cut on a dry day. The smell of the first cut grass is like nothing else. Paths mown into meadows or a neat frame to a rough area will go a long way to provide the contrast that keeps a wilder garden feeling tended. Although now is a good time to start laying turf, prepare ground for sowing lawn seed and hold off until early April to get best results.

Sowing seeds

As soon as the soil reaches 6C you can start to sow directly outside. Sweet peas and broad beans can be sown first, and though the first of the salad can go in now you get better results if you warm the ground first with plastic or cloches. Early sowings of mustard, rocket and cutand-come-again salad are some of the most delicious mouthfuls of the year, so seize the moment if it looks like the weather is with us and the month is kind.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. Easter Eggs already? When I was shopping at the weekend I took a step back when I spotted a section devoted to Easter Eggs. Really? Already? I mean it’s not even Lent yet! (I’m writing this mid-February and Ash Wednesday isn’t until March 1st). I mean I know that the retail industry just flips from Christmas to Valentine’s Day to Easter and so on, but I do wish there was a break in there somewhere. And who buys Easter Eggs this early? Isn’t it just asking for trouble to have them sitting there on the shelf, looking so tasty, daring you to eat them, especially if you’re going to give up chocolate for Lent? No, no no!!!! I’m doing what I normally do and leaving it until a few days before Easter itself.

Whatever’s next? I was on Facebook recently and a post came up in my timeline telling me to “Celebrate my friendship with …..” one of my friends because it was our 2-year Friendversary! Our what? Have you ever heard of it? I mean, I’ve known this particular friend for many more years that that and I just think this is just taking the whole Facebook thing a bit too far. What’s the point? Don’t get me wrong. It’s great for finding out how everyone’s doing and, of course, for looking at videos of cute animals, but is it just me? I have been reliably informed by a colleague at ITV that the Friendversary has been about for a while now, but I’ve personally never noticed it! Anyway, I’d appreciate your thoughts!

Potty training – don’t worry so much! I was talking to a friend of mine recently who is currently potty training her little boy and all of a sudden she burst out crying from the stress of it. She told me that other mothers were saying/boasting how advanced their children were because they had allegedly conquered the potty in a matter of days. So she wondered what was she doing that was so wrong? She felt she had no-one to talk to and it was making her cranky with her son who has always been so easy-going. Now this made me very cross because I get so sick and tired of parents who think bringing up children is a competition – and by doing so, make other mums feel worthless. Well, let me tell you, it’s not a competition! All children develop at their own pace. It doesn’t matter if they can’t walk on their 1st birthday or if they still want their dummy. And in my opinion there is no hard or fast rule about potty training. They’ll do it when they’re ready. Don’t get cross with them if they have an accident and wipe it up with a smile on your face and a peg on your nose if necessary! Praise them when they do use the potty and, don’t forget, have pull ups handy at all times! My friend, incidentally, had only been potty training for a week!
