House & Home

What is the Green Homes Grant?

Here’s how to get your £5,000 voucher - The grant covers up to two thirds the cost of improvements to make homes more energy efficient. The grant means homeowners can get up to £5,000 to spend making heating their houses more efficient and environmentally-friendly. It will also create new work for builders and other tradespeople, and possibly thousands of jobs - which could be vital at a point where many people are losing employment.

4

But what is the Green Homes Grant? And how can you get a voucher for your home? The £2 billion Green Homes Grant is intended to help people in the UK cut carbon emissions, which is vital if the country is to meet its promise to have net zero emissions by 2050. The grant provides funding for homeowners to bring in energy efficiency measures. This means that homes should be able to stay warm for longer, meaning people can use less energy heating their houses which would be good for the environment.

Please mention

What can you do with the grant? The grant covers up to two thirds the cost of improvements to make homes more energy efficient. The improvements homeowners can make on grant money are split into two categories. To get any money, homeowners have to insulate either a solid

wall, a cavity wall, under-floor areas, loft, flat roof, a room in their roof, or a park home, or install low-carbon heating measures like solar thermal systems or ground or air source heat pumps. If homeowners already have these features, they can apply for grant money to improve them. Continued Page 6

House & Home

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

House & Home If they do this, they can also get funding for other features like draught proofing, double or triple glazing, or secondary glazing, and heating controls like appliance thermostats, hot water tank thermostats or smart heating controls. You cannot get more money for secondary features than you can for primary. For example, if you got £2,000 for insulating a solid wall and installing a solar thermal system, you could not get more than £2,000 for putting in double glazing and heating controls. The scheme is expected to save homeowners up to £600 per year in energy bills, and create 100,000 jobs, the Government said.

6

Please mention

Who is eligible? The scheme is expected to help owners of around 600,000 homes make their properties more energy efficient. Anyone who lives in a home that they own. This includes long-leaseholders and homes with shared ownership. Landlords of homes rented out privately or for social rent are also eligible, while park home owners, including gypsy and traveller sites qualify for the scheme too. But new-build homes are not eligible. Homeowners on various kinds of benefits like Jobseeker’s Allowance are eligible for a bigger grant of up to £10,000 for the improvements covering the entire cost of the refurbishments.

What about renters? The government also plans to spend £500 million to support people on low incomes with their fuel costs, including renters. How can you apply? Later in August homeowners can get advice on how to make their home more energy efficient from Simple Energy Advice (SEA). SEA will tell homeowners what areas of the property may be eligible for funding. A list of government-accredited builders and tradespeople will also be available to choose from. Once the work is agreed the Government will hand out vouchers from the end of September.

Recipe

Baked aubergine with spiced lamb, mint & pomegranate Serves 2

Aubergines are great vessels for stuffing. We’ve given the lamb a Middle Eastern style spicing and have served it sprinkled with almonds, mint and pomegranate, though you can leave out the pomegranate if you can’t find any. Good with couscous, a leafy side salad or wilted spinach.

8

Ingredients 1 large aubergine sunflower oil/light olive oil, for frying / roasting 25g flaked almonds 1 onion, finely diced 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped or crushed 300g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried mint ¼ tsp smoked paprika ¼ tsp chilli flakes 4 large tomatoes, skinned & chopped 1 pomegranate handful of mint leaves, shredded salt and black pepper

Method Heat the oven to 220˚C/Gas 7. Cut the aubergine in half lengthways. Score the flesh in a criss-cross pattern. Drizzle liberally with oil and season with salt and pepper. Place skin-side up in a baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until the flesh is soft and tender right the way through. Meanwhile, put the almonds in a dry frying pan. Heat gently, stirring, until golden. Remove to a plate and keep to one side. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and fry on a low heat, stirring, for 10 minutes. Add the lamb and fry, stirring, on a medium heat to brown. Add the garlic, cumin coriander, dried mint, smoked paprika and chilli flakes and stir for 2 minutes. Add the chopped tomatoes. Season and simmer for 30 minutes, adding a splash of water if needed to stop the meat drying out. Cut the pomegranate in half crossways. Take a rolling pin or the handle of a wooden spoon. Hold the pomegranate cut-side down in your hand over a bowl and bash the skin; the seeds will fall out (most of them anyway). Pick out any pith that does fall in; there shouldn’t be much with this technique, but it tastes bitter, so remove any you find. Once the aubergine flesh is tender, remove it from the oven. Carefully scoop out as much of the flesh as you can, keeping the aubergine skins intact. Add the flesh to the lamb. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes. Check the seasoning. Spoon the lamb mixture into the aubergine skins. Sprinkle over the almonds, pomegranate seeds and mint to serve. www.riverford.co.uk/recipes

Gardening

Vegetable seeds to sow from September onwards Early September is a good time to sow veg seeds for winter and spring, including leafy crops, autumn onions and broad beans. September is a time to plan ahead and start sowing the vegetables that will provide valuable winter harvests and earlier spring and summer pickings. In autumn the soil is still warm, so seeds will germinate quickly. If the weather is still fine, the growing season can continue for several weeks.

12

Here is our list of vegetables you can sow in early September: Leafy veg Spring cabbages and spinach can be sown now for pickings next spring. You will need to cover the spinach with fleece from October onwards.

Salad crops There’s still time to sow salad crops to harvest in the coming weeks. Sow in a sheltered spot outdoors, or grow in pots. Try mustard leaf, winter salad mixes, mizuna or mibuna. Winter lettuces such as ‘Winter Density’ can be sown under glass. Broad beans and peas Sowing broad beans in autumn means plants can establish over winter and crop earlier next spring. Broad beans and peas are hardy, but it’s advisable to cover plants with fleece during hard frosts or snow. Try broad bean ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ or pea ‘Feltham First’. Radish Radishes mature in just a couple of weeks, so it’s worth sowing a late batch of seeds now, for a late crop.

Gardening Turnips Turnips are another fast-growing crop that can be sown on bare soil in September – they do best in cool, moist conditions. Harvest as golf-ball sized, baby veg in around six weeks. Perfect for the Christmas table. Onions, shallots and garlic Planting onion sets in autumn means you will get an earlier crop next year. Choose a variety that’s ideal for autumn sowing, such as ‘Troy’ or ‘Radar’. Garlic can be sown any time between now and spring.

Here are some of the main jobs in your garden to do in September: Top up ponds and bird baths regularly. Water fruit and veg plants daily. Prune all summer flowering shrubs once the blooms are finished. Keep on top of weeds as they compete with your crops for nutrients and water. Water camellias and rhododendrons thoroughly this month to make sure that next year’s buds develop well. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight. Stake tall or top-heavy dahlias and lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Dead-head bedding plants and perennials to encourage them to flower into the autumn and stop them self-seeding. Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy. Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year. As penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers. Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost. Trim any lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact.
