Hello Readers Welcome to the February edition of your DNfourteen Magazine. This month we have our special Spring Wedding feature full of tips and advice for anyone who is planning a wedding. We will also be organising the Beverley Minster Wedding Fair, (the largest wedding fair in East Yorkshire) which is being held on Saturday 1st March 2014 so if you need further assistance, why not pop along to this free event. The wedding fair has two bridal fashion shows with a great mix of the latest styles and some traditional favourites as well. In this issue we also take a look at what can be done in the garden this month, everything from hopefully not having to keep the snow off your plants, taking cuttings, cleaning the pond etc.. etc.. Henry Priestman launches his new album very shortly here in the East Riding (see page 17) and I can recommend him as a live artist and urge anyone who has not seen him to do so.. he is amazing!!! Some venues have more hidden charges than Ryanair - one of my friends had to pay extra to hire a cake knife. So before booking, pose as many questions as possible and get important answers in writing. Here are some of the key questions to ask before signing - hopefully they’ll help you find a suitable but cheap wedding venue:

If your dress has laces or buttons, ask a friend to come and help you dress. Often a bridesmaid or family member will be there for bridal preparations, but it is likely that they may also have false nails for the occasion. If you have a friend present who isn’t in the bridal party they will be able to help the bride to get dressed.
Bridal tips When you’re having your hair styled on your wedding day, wear a shirt. Many brides wear a t-shirt, then struggle to get it over their newly coiffeured head. If you wear a shirt it can be unbuttoned and will not damage your hairdo. If you have a dress that goes over your head, get a pillow case or a silk underskirt to put over your head first. This way your dress will slide on more easily with damaging hair or getting any make-up on it. Remove labels on the underside of shoes – a very fiddly and time-consuming job that is best sorted in advance.

Dress the bride first. Lots of people dress the bride last so everyone is ready to help, but if plans start to run behind it will be the bride who is in a rush to get dressed. If you dress the bride first she can get ready at her own pace, feel relaxed and have time to make any adjustments to her dress for maximum comfort. A relaxed, casual wedding on a beach will require a very different style of dress to a formal evening affair. Your First Dance Some couples love the idea of performing a well-practiced routine in front of their wedding guests; others are terrified at the thought. Gardening Jobs to do in February Did your Ice plant (sedum spectabile) flop? Every so often a plant decides that it cannot support it’s long stems, so it flops outwards. This leaves your plant looking rather ugly. To avoid this next season, dig him up and replant about six plants in the same spot ,but add some compost first . Next Autumn you will have a plant on the same scale as the last and one that stays upright. Clear Snow Brush heavy snow off trees shrubs and conifers with a broom to prevent branches getting damaged. Split & Divide Perennials Dig up, divide and re-plant perennial plants that have been undisturbed for a few years . This will encourage healthy growth and encourage them to produce more and better blooms. Get Planting It may be getting cold in the air, but the soil is still retaining some warmth. So it’s a good time to plant that hedge you have always wanted or shrubs and trees. Get rid of your old roses and replace with new. The warmth in the soil means good strong root growth , so get them in now before heavy snow comes along and the soil freezes. You can plant out now, camellias, azaleas, conifers, shrubs, roses, rhododendrons, trees, plants and trees on display outside at garden centres are usually ones you can plant now, but its always best to check a member of staff. Propagation Preparation - Before it’s time to sow By now you will be itching to get sowing seeds, and getting stuck into the greenhouse and the garden. Well, patience is a virtue! It won’t be long before you are starting off your sweet peas, and broad beans, but for now, preparation is the key!!! Thinking of seeding a new lawn in spring? If you’re thinking of seeding a new lawn in spring then you need to be preparing the ground now. Dig the area over making sure you remove all perennial weeds. Squirrels know a good thing!
Apart from Christmas time and viewing television programmes on nature showing squirrels eating nuts, nuts as a food do not feature in our lives very often. More is the pity for medical studies have shown that by eating nuts we can protect ourselves against all kinds of illness and diseases. Various studies suggests that people who eat a handful of nuts every day live longer than those who do not eat them at all. Studies have come to this conclusion after analysing data on nearly 120,000 people collected over 30 years. They also showed that the reduction in risk of death by eating nuts once a week was linked to an 11% reduction, two to four times a week to a 13% reduction, five to six times a week to a 15% reduction, and seven or more times a week, to a 20% reduction. Results of studies over the years have also found that people who eat nuts regularly tended to be slimmer than those who do not eat nuts putting to bed the idea that eating nuts leads to weight gain. Neither is eating nuts related to causes of death as studies show a reduction of 29% in deaths from heart disease and a significant reduction of 11% in the risk of dying from cancer. Previous studies have also shown links between eating nuts and lower risk for many diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, colon cancer and diverticulitis. Eating lots of nuts has also been associated with lower cholesterol, reductions in inflammation, oxidative stress, body fat and insulin resistance. Studies have also found that the reduced risk of death was similar for both nuts that grow on trees, such as cashews and Brazils, and peanuts, which grow under the ground. Other types of tree nut include almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts. And while some small studies have linked higher nut consumption to lower death from all causes in certain populations, none has examined the effect in a large population in such detail over a long time. In the meantime, darling, pass the nut bowl.

Premier League Darts has developed into a must-see sporting event for fans across the UK and Ireland in recent years and there’s already huge anticipation ahead of the 2014 competition, which will visit the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield on Thursday 10th April 2014. The Founding of Goole Docks Research by the Marshland Local History Group came across an Admiral Frank Sotheron, who was a major land owner in the Marshland area during the early 19th century. As well as owning land in the Marshland he also inherited, from his grandfather, the Sotheron land surrounding Hook and the area now known as Goole.

Around the 1820’s Sotheron was in discussion with the Aire and Calder Navigation Company who needed his land for the building of their new canal that was to terminate near his estate at Hook and the then small village of Goole. In one of his private diaries he mentions riding into Goole to see the new large dock basin being cut. Admiral Sotheron had joined the navy at the tender age of nine. At the age of thirteen as a midshipman,
he was to fight at one of the bloodiest battles in naval history on board HMS Arethusa. In 1801

In his private papers are letters to and from Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson under who’s command Sotheron was ordered to protect the King and Queen of Naples. If you visit Goole today you will find street names connected with his family such as Sotheron Street, Sutton Street and Estcourt Street. In 1797, a British publisher issued The Young Man’s Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Printers had already begun producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called “mechanical valentines,” and a reduction in postal rates in the next century ushered in the less personal but easier practice of mailing Valentines. That, in turn, made it possible for the first time to exchange cards anonymously, which is taken as the reason for the sudden appearance of racy verse in an era otherwise prudishly Victorian. Paper Valentines became so popular in England in the early 19th century that they were assembled in factories. Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons, with paper lace introduced in the mid-19th century. The reinvention of Saint Valentine’s Day in the 1840s has been traced by Leigh Eric Schmidt. As a writer in Graham’s American Monthly observed in 1849, “Saint Valentine’s Day... is becoming, nay it has become, a national holyday.” The Laura Seddon Greeting Card Collection from the Manchester Metropolitan University gathers 450 Valentine’s Day cards dating from the early nineteenth century, printed by the major publishers of the day.

DNfourteen February 2014 RSPB Blacktoft Sands Events Feb 2014 Spectacular birds of prey Sat 8th Feb and Thurs 13th Feb. 3pm to 5pm Come and see the spectacular birds of prey that spend the winter at RSPB Blacktoft Sands. Watch up to 20 majestic marsh harriers flying in to spend the night roosting in the reeds at Blacktoft. Other birds of prey flying in to join the party may include sparrowhawk, merlin and perhaps hen harrier. These events are very popular so please book in advance. Event costs £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. Wonderful Winter Ducks Sunday 16th February. 10:30am to 12:30pm Winter is a great time for a closer look at ducks. One of our wildlife guides will take you around the reserve to look at the ducks that visit Blacktoft during the winter months. At this time of year, they are in their best plumage and are quite vocal. Ducks to look for include wigeon and teal. Please book in advance. Event costs £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. An Introduction to Garden Bird Photography Saturday 22nd Feb and Saturday 22nd March 10:30am to 12:30pm. Led by an experienced and enthusiastic photographer, this short course aims to provide an enjoyable introduction to the year round pleasures of garden bird photography. We will include: A brief overview of recommended photographic equipment and how to use it. How to attract a wide variety of birds to your garden. The perfect garden bird photograph and how to achieve it. Potential problems/difficulties and how avoid or mitigate them. N.B. A Grumpy Old Man Writes

An Apple for Teacher My favourite teachers when I went to school in the 1950’s was ‘Tubby’ O’Brien, the English master: I loved his English lessons. A big cuddly sought of man who had a grandfather figure about him, or a favourite uncle, his one pet hate was the use of the word ‘nice’. “Don’t let me hear you use that word boy. There are plenty of adjectives you could use instead of that word.” he would say. He called everybody ‘boy’ and even ten years later soon after I left the Merchant Navy he used it when addressing me at an Old Boys Association dinner. The occasion was the first time I had attended such a dinner since leaving school, my leaves never corresponding with this annual dinner. On entering the room where the dinner was to take place I saw Tubby O’Brien talking to some of the other ‘Old Boys.’ Now retired, yet, it seemed to me, wearing the same rust coloured and crumbled suit he was famous for, but without his black gown, I approached him and waited for a suitable opportunity to speak to him. When it came I said: “Good evening, Sir, do you remember me.?” “ Who are you boy?” he enquired, looking at me over the top of his glasses. Boy! I was twenty-six at this time! “My name is Kinnersley, Sir” “Didnít you go to sea, boy?” “Yes, Sir!” “What happened to you, boy?” “I became senior navigating officer of the shipping line, Sir.” “Hm,” he muttered, and then added: “I always said no good would come of you, boy!” He had a way with the English language that man! Nice! Innit!
