Hello Readers Welcome to the March edition of your DNfourteen Magazine. This month we have our special Mother’s Day feature full of tips and advice for anyone who is looking to treat their mother. We also have a great little feature on House & Home where we look at the effects the economy and financial climate is having on our children and their attempts to get on the housing ladder. In this issue we also take a look at what can be done in the garden this month, everything from hopefully not having to keep the snow off your plants, taking cuttings, cleaning the pond and all the tips you need to know about lawns. However, if you don’t have the time or ability to do keep a tidy garden we have some great advertisers like Heritage Landscapes and Greenthumb who can do it all for you! We have a nice little article about up-cycling and all things vintage which is really good and has motivated me to make something useful out of an old pair of curtains that I had been saving!!! If you are feeling lucky why not take a moment and enter our competition to see Keep It Cash at Beverley Minster. Just for fun we have a great puzzle page, so grab yourself a coffee and a pen and see how well you can do! We have a great feature on a new book by local author Martin Limon that focuses on East Yorkshire Village Visits that is well worth buying. Enjoy the magazine and keep safe and warm… Kind regards,
Jane Gough Editor

Marshland Connections Barbados Members of the Marshland Local History Group were collecting material for their first publication Moons Waxed & Waned, published 2002, when a member came across details concerning the Rev. Edward Cragg Haynes, a West Indian known by the
Victorian marshland villagers as the “black vicar”. Born in Barbados in 1822, he arrived in Swinefleet in 1851 after being ordained by Samuel Wilberforce, who was the son of William Wilberforce, Edward was probably one of the earliest formally trained coloured clergyman in Yorkshire and the country. Recently two members of the Marshland LHG were able to visit Barbados to do further research. We knew he was the eldest son of the wealthy merchant William Cragg Haynes and his wife Sarah Catherine, who were “free coloured” inhabitants of Barbados. Details of Edward’s relatives were found in the Archives of the West Indian University
Please mention
DNfourteen March 2014 at Black Rock, Barbados, Edward’s grandfather, Richard Cragg Haynes, he too was a wealthy merchant with property in the centre of Bridgetown and well connected in Barbadian Society and Edward’s uncle, Edmund, was a leader in the anti slavery movement.
The property, in Bridgetown town centre, is now the site of the Da Costa Shopping Mall (pictured below), one of the sites visitors are told to see when arriving by cruise liner. Sir David Da Costa had inherited the properties through marrying Edward Cragg Haynes’ cousin, Elizabeth Ann Haynes.
In March 1854 the Rev Cragg Haynes advertised places for pupils at his Swinefleet Grammar School, with the success of his school, in 1865 he advertised a new school at Empson Villa, Old Goole, this is now Old Goole Working Men’s Club. Two of his boarding pupils were James and John Rank of the famous Rank (Cinema) family. Further details: www.marshlandlocalhistorygroup.co.uk www.rona.dickinson.co.uk

Keep Trade Local Countdown to Christmas
Everybody loves a great wedding and it is every girls dream day so we have put together some little words of advice as well as the best wedding suppliers in the East Yorkshire area to help you realise your dreams. It’s NOT all about the perfect wedding
Too many work through a wanna-have list – a film star dress, flowing champagne, platinum rings, a five-star honeymoon. Only then, they ask how they’ll pay for it. One disgruntled father told us: “I asked my daughter what her budget was. She asked me, ‘Dad, how can I work out my budget until I know what I want?’” So, instead, ask “what can we afford to spend on our wedding?” Then work out how to have the best do possible within that budget. A picnic in a park with close friends can be just as magical as a blingy bash for 300. Play the wedding prioritisation game Once you know your budget, the aim’s to work out how much you can actually afford to spend on different areas
DNfourteen March 2014 DNfourteen Dec 2013 / Jan 2014
and prioritise what’s important to YOU.
Write down all the things you need to spend cash on on a different piece of card – from cakes to cars, rings to registry office fees – always keeping in mind that you don’t need to stick to convention or have everything your peers tell you you “need”. Discuss what’s most important to both of you. You may fancy a funky themed wedding cake, but would you prefer a honeymoon abroad? Or a professional photographer? Remember, venue costs are likely to be about one third to half of your budget. Being aware of how you can trade one item for another helps you see how far your budgeted cash will go. If it doesn’t go as far as you want, you need to change your list - but not your budget. The end result may be that you can’t afford the wedding Don’t let the wedding ruin your marriage Before we get too far into this, and you skip straight to this guide’s bargain-grabbing section, it really is

DN14 ‘MOTHER’S DAY’ SUN 30th MARCH During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church, the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service to be held on Laetare Sunday. This was either a large local church, or more often the nearest Cathedral. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone “a-mothering”, although whether this preceded the term Mothering Sunday is unclear. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented by conflicting working hours. Children and young people who were “in service” (servants in richer households) were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families (or, originally, return to their “mother” church). The children would pick wild flowers along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts to mothers.
By the 1920s the custom of keeping Mothering Sunday had tended to lapse in Ireland and in continental Europe. The traditions of Mothering Sunday, still practised by the Church of England and Church of Ireland were merged with the newly-imported traditions and celebrated in the wider Catholic and secular society. UK-based businesses saw the commercial opportunity in the holiday and relentlessly promoted it in the UK; by the 1950’s it was celebrated across all the United Kingdom. People from Ireland and the UK started celebrating Mother’s Day, but on the same day that Mothering Sunday was celebrated, the fourth Sunday in Lent. The two celebrations have now been mixed up, and many people think that they are the same thing. It is however a great opportunity for all children; no matter what their age, to say thank you to their mums for being so special. I hope that you find a worthy treat or gift amongst our DN14 advertisers for your mother that will make her day one to remember. Happy Mothers Day.

Gardening Jobs to do in March Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. Top 10 jobs this month Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes Protect new spring shoots from slugs Plant summer-flowering bulbs Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials Top dress containers with fresh compost Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed) Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) grown for colourful winter stems Weeds come back in to growth - deal with them before they get out of hand Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters Open the greenhouse or conservatory doors and vents on warm days. Lawns If the weather is mild enough and your lawn shows signs of growth, ensure the first cut of the season is light. Raise your blades 0.5cm (0.25in) higher than the usual cutting height. Newly turfed areas can be mown with the blades set to the highest setting, as soon as the grass reaches 5cm (2in) in height. Turf can still be laid, provided the soil is not too wet or frozen. Work from planks, to avoid compacting the soil. Do not walk on newly laid turf, and leave it undisturbed for several weeks to allow the new roots to establish. Where lawns are to be grown from seed, prepare the ground for sowing by cultivating, levelling and then firming the soil. Doing this now will allow the soil to settle prior to sowing later in the month, or in April. In late March apply a high nitrogen spring/summer lawn fertiliser to encourage good, strong growth to help the lawn recover after the winter. Straighten lawn edges using a half-moon. Sow a wildflower meadow.

Nine Facts About Bacon 1. The British spend around ÂŁ1.37billion a year on bacon, eating 227,000 tonnes of it. 2. More than 10 bacon sandwiches are eaten every second on average in the UK. 3. According to the latest survey, 46 per cent of people like to grill bacon while 37 per cent fry it. 4. When Julius Caesar landed in Britain in 55BC, he brought his own bacon with him. 5. The earliest known record of a British breakfast of bacon and eggs dates back to 1560. 6. Every week 2.3 million pigs are slaughtered in the USA to make sure the bacon loving yanks get their meat. 7. Every year in the UK approximately 8 million pigs, 2 million cattle, 9 million sheep and lambs, 80 million fish and 750 million birds are slaughtered for human consumption. 8. How pigs are slaughtered: Pigs may be brought to the stunning point in a restrainer conveyor, or be penned in groups and stunned individually using electricity. Carbon dioxide anaesthesia is also used in a number of large abattoirs. Pigs are lowered, preferably in groups, into a chamber containing a minimum concentration of 70% carbon dioxide in air. The pigs then lose consciousness and must remain in the gas mixture until dead. The animals are then shackled by one hind leg, hoisted and bled. 9. The film Babe took over ÂŁ18.5 million at the box office.

DN14 HOUSE & HOME FEATURE When it comes to making decisions about what to do with your home, above all, please take advice. It is the largest asset most of us will ever own so the decisions you make are vital.
as it will affect the asking price recommended by your estate agent. Whilst 2013 is already proving more positive with more property sales, it is still a buyers’ market, so it remains important to get the asking price just right.
If you’re outgrowing your home, do you improve it, or sell it and move elsewhere?
If your property is a ‘doer-upper’ (needs modernisation!) then don’t spend any money on it, simply make sure it is uncluttered, immaculately clean and priced right. If your property is ‘ready for moving in’, then take agent advice on presenting it to its absolute best internally and externally, to maximise not only sale price but also chances of sale. If you’ve enhanced the property at all, make sure your agent highlights all your improvements in your property brochure, and be sure to keep all supporting documents like guarantees to demonstrate quality of workmanship.
Well, if you’re going to move, you have two options – sell it or let it. If you’re interested in letting, it’s a good time to do it as property values are still relatively low and the rental market is strong with high rental values, so you may want to bring in a good regular income through letting and then sell your house at a better price once the property market is more buoyant. However, if you are not an experienced landlord, get good advice from an agent to ensure you avoid the many pitfalls. If you’d rather sell, be clear about your priorities. Which is more important – speed of sale or the price you get for the property? Most likely both. But in a slow property market there’s an important distinction between the two,
Whether you sell or let, you’ll most likely need to buy or rent your next home. Renting has less pitfalls but research the market and location, and be careful who you rent from. When buying, do so with great care. Above all, do not buy any property that you could have a problem selling, and it really is worth taking advice from your friendly local agent

before buying any property. Before I went into estate agency, I made that mistake myself, but I won’t make that mistake again! If, on the other hand, you are thinking of staying put and improving your home, great! This can be a much cheaper option overall, as long as you plan and act carefully. If you are considering significant changes (i.e. loft conversion, extension, conservatory, etc.) always get advice first. Every property has a ‘ceiling value’ so you mustn’t over-spend. And beware of DIY – nothing puts a buyer off more than a property with botched workmanship. It’s also important to keep things in proportion, so always maintain a balance between living space, sleeping space, garden space, and parking space. And whatever you do, don’t do anything to make the property look ugly, or it may never sell again!

What are young people sacrificing to get onto the property ladder? Just over a third of non-homeowners aged 18-34 are hoping to buy a property in the immediate future and are making changes to their lifestyle accordingly, says a new report.
According to the Post Office, the number of young people looking to buy a first home is fairly static (36 per cent in 2013, compared to 34 per cent in 2012). However, the number who have no intention of buying has doubled over the same period, from five per cent to 10 per cent.

Since the recession in 2008, people have taken extra steps to save money for a deposit. However, the launch of the Government’s Help to Buy scheme and a raft of affordable loans on the market look to have rallied optimism amongst first-time buyers. The survey reveals that young men and women have different reasons for buying their own home. Of those young women looking to buy, 30 per cent say they are driven by the desire to settle down and 30 per cent are tired of renting, while for young men the strongest motivation is buying property as a good financial investment (29 per cent).
When cutting back to save money, the first thing to go are takeaway meals (57 per cent) and going out at the weekend (51 per cent). Around 43 per cent say they’d consider cutting back on food shopping and over one in ten would forego saving into a pension. Other savings areas include making their own lunch for work (50 per cent), not buying new clothes/shoes (47 per cent), not going on holiday (43 per cent), and giving up their morning coffee (42 per cent).

Beverley Minster Goes Retro Beverley Minster has announced that it will be holding a Vintage & Retro Fair in the Autumn of this year. The event which hopes to raise vital funds for the upkeep of the Minster is the latest in a variety of events that they have organised. Other events have included Wedding Fairs, A Christmas Tree Festival and a Food Festival as well as music concerts. With a view to encouraging the people of the East Riding to visit and use the Minster as a focal point for community activities as well as its Christian and spiritual uses. Rev. Jeremey Fletcher said “No matter what event is going on you will still always find a quiet area where you can just sit and think or speak with God.” The Vintage & Retro Fair should see in excess of two thousand people attend if previous events are to be used as a yardstick. The people of Beverley and surrounding areas tend to support the events we put on in very high numbers said one of the organisers who anticipates over 100 exhibitors and dealers.

East Yorkshire Village Visits: A New Local History Book Author Martin Limon explains how it came to be written…. I eagerly accepted the challenge and decided from the outset that I would 1)

collection of historical records, old newspapers, census returns and the like provided a rich source of inspiration for a series that ran from 2007 to 2014. The East Riding Archive also provided me with much of the material for two books based on 3) the series. The first of these was: ‘The Villages of East Yorkshire’, published by Blackthorn Press in 2011. Forty villages from the early years of the magazine series were included in this volume including North Cave, South Cave and Ellerker. This book is still on sale at bookshops and via internet suppliers like Amazon.

My new book, East Yorkshire Village Visits, was published by Fonthill Media in December 2013. Thirty-one villages from the magazine series published in 2011, 2012 and 2013 comprise this new volume and I have taken the opportunity to include both new and previously unpublished historical material. Among these fascinating communities, large and small, are Airmyn, Eastrington and Gilberdyke. FIONA’S WORD
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
CHILDREN NOT SLEEPING! I’m sure we’ve all experienced this and trying to fathom out what you can do to help is frustrating to say the least. We’re going through this at the moment with one of ours. We’ve tried everything. We always read bedtime stories, so that’s a given. We’ve tried a soothing bath, warm milk, no screen time for at least an hour before bedtime – the list goes on and on. It’s not that they’re trying to be naughty by not sleeping or trying to angle to sleep with Mummy and Daddy. Sometimes they simply don’t seem to be able to switch off. I’m hoping it’s just a phase! Any suggestions are more than welcome! THE WEATHER? This seems to be one of my favourite topics of conversation at the moment – sad but true! And I know I‘m not alone because we’re all wondering the same thing! I thought we’d been told we were going to have one of the worst winters in living memory – but at the time of writing we seem to be having an extremely mild winter (I think I’ve only had to scrape my windscreen three times so far), interspersed with some bitter cold wind and occasional downpours. On a purely practical level, it also makes it extremely difficult to know what to wear every morning because the temperature changes dramatically from one hour to the next. And no snow, despite various claims in the press. I don’t know about you, and I’m not one to bet, but I’d like to know the odds for a white Easter!
