Do you know what your credit score is? You may not have checked your credit score lately, but there’s a good chance someone else has. Whether you’re arranging a mortgage on your next home or buying that new sofa on interest free credit, someone has accessed that magic three-digit number that determines if and how much you can borrow.
A credit score is more than just a number in the eyes of a prospective lender. It’s a measure of a person’s financial reputation and the determining factor on whether they will lend and what they will charge. A credit score answers this question for the lender: What is the likelihood that this person will pay his or her bills on time? A high score means a person is likely to pay bills on time; the lower the score, the more likely a person is to miss payments. We’d like to think that it’s a human being accessing our credit score, deciding our borrowing capacity and creditworthiness, but in reality the majority of decisions are made by computers! So to avoid the misery of “the computer say’s no”, understanding, protecting and improving your credit score has never been more important. Here are some tips to help you do just that.
Understanding your score: l The majority of a person’s credit score— thirty-five percent—is determined by whether they pay their bills on time; missed payments can be very detrimental. l Outstanding balances are next, making up thirty percent of the score. The lower the
Please mention
balance-to-limit ratio, the better the score, so don’t max out on your credit cards; A card at it’s limit is worse than two that are at half the limit. l Fifteen per cent of a score considers account age; Older accounts are better than younger accounts. The type and mix of credit makes up ten percent of a score. The healthier the mix of credit, the better the score. l The number of enquiries from creditors into a person’s score also constitutes ten percent and multiple credit searches can damage your score.
Improving your score: l Make sure all your debts are registered to your correct name and current address to avoid missing important correspondence from the lender. l Ensure there are no mistakes on your credit file. Tackle the credit provider to resolve these quickly if there are. l Register on the electoral roll, so that your history can easily be tracked.
Protecting your score:
l Avoid making too many applications for credit in a short period. Watch out

for companies that credit score you unexpectedly. Opening a new bank account or even taking a car insurance quote may trigger a credit search, so check before you apply. l Apply for credit only where you have a good chance of being accepted. Read the eligibility criteria. For example if the product says it will not accept those with County Court Judgments within the last 12 months, then avoid applying if you have a CCJ within the last 12 months. l When applying for a large loan, such as a mortgage, seek advice from a professional broker to ensure that you meet the lenders criteria, which is often not advertised. l Make sure all of your debts are paid by direct debit. This creates an automatic payment and avoids late payment issues around dates such as bank holidays. l If you change your address update everyone and make sure that you have a post redirect until it’s done. FOCUS ON: GOOLE
When Goole first opened as a port, it had 450 inhabitants, today it has over 18,000. It has now become one of the most important ports in England. The area is also the centre of an agricultural district, and produces glass and clothing. Interestingly, unlike many other towns in Yorkshire, Goole is not mentioned in the Doomesday Book, but is first recorded in the year 1362 as Gulle. The area has many attractions, which are popular with tourists from all over the country, such as the Goole Clock Tower. It is surrounded by stunning scenery, and provides people with a panoramic view of the area. Shops and cafe’s are also placed next to the tower. Along with this, Goole has a great high street, the main shopping street, on Boothferry Road. Another interesting feature is Goole’s twin water towers. They are known locally as the Salt and Pepper pots. Goole is noted for sport, with football, cricket, and rugby teams coming from the area, with the first team for rugby playing in the Yorkshire Division Two league.

The Spring Gardener

Gardening Jobs to do in May Beware treacherous late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until the middle of the month and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary.
Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they take hold (ideally on a dry day to desiccate the victims) - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Remember these systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Dandelions are a monstrous nuisance at this time of year - if you don’t have time to deal with them terminally, at least chop their heads off before they set seed. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient! The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers etc do need watering every day). Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or readymade soil conditioner. Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch.

HOWDEN
DNfourteen May 2014
The market town of Howden has a rich, Royal heritage that spans hundreds of years. In 959AD, King Edgar gave his wife, Ethelfleda, the Howden Manor. William the Conqueror gave the town to the Bishop of Durham, in 1080, and in 1191 Prince John spent Christmas in the town, and eventually allowed Howden to host an annual fair in 1200. The town is perhaps most notable for its horse fair. The Howden horse fair, established in the 19th century, was once reported to be the largest fair for horses in England. It was estimated that over 4000 horses went up for sale each day, with stables in villages over a 10 mile radius completely filled up. The Howden Minster, one of the largest churches in East Yorkshire, is a famous tourist hotspot. Visitors can look at the ruined eastern end, which protected by English Heritage, and the western end which is still thriving today. The Shire Hall & Town market, and the Ashes Cricket Grounds are also great places to visit, and showcase the towns best attributes.

Cleaning up That Wardrobe – How to do It Maybe you have three closets you consider your “wardrobe,” only you haven’t seen anything come out of that one for a while. Or maybe you’re just tired of the same old things you can’t wear anymore and want a change of scenery. If so, try going for a wardrobe clean-up. To many this seems like a daunting task that could easily take forever and never get finished. Luckily, there are ways to get it done and still make it fun – it just takes the know-how.
House and Home
19
Donate the Old One good way to make the wardrobe cleaning process more enjoyable is to give back to your community by donating the stuff none of you want anymore. Try calling around to friends or family that may need the clothes or just dropping them anonymously at a homeless or domestic violence shelter. Doing this can bring you a peace of mind and a better excuse to let go of the old – it’s all going for a good cause, after all, and it’s a ecofriendly way to give back to the environment by not allowing the clothes to end up in a landfill.
Find a Friend Finding a friend is the best way to both make the wardrobe cleaning fun and keep you grounded. If you’ve had a cat sweater since high school, can’t fit into it anymore and it itches you like crazy but you want to keep it, your friend/family member can talk you down from that fashion-leery ledge. Friends can also help by taking away what you don’t want or can’t fit into anymore, so inviting over a few of them may not be such a bad idea. If you’re embarrassed by what’s in your closet, take a look at theirs – chances In with the New! are you have nothing to be embarrassed about. Now that you’ve narrowed your wardrobe down to what should be a slim amount of clothing, you can Make it Fun technically use this as an excuse to go shopping! Try Making it fun is really the only way to get through the nightmare of cleaning out your wardrobe. After picking out five/six pieces from your new improved wardrobe and buying classic, versatile pieces to go you invite your friend or friends, order lots of tasty with them and others for several usable looks for takeout and maybe even set up a dressing area for different occasions. A girl’s shopping is never done, everyone to try old things on, with a designated and even if you end up keeping or re-discovering space for each friend’s “keep” pile and the mutual several pieces, you could always shop for accessories! throw out pile. Don’t allow your keep pile to get higher than your throw-away pile! Try playing some Those don’t take up closet space, do they? And they fun music and talking about old sentimental pieces can also lend a versatility and classy look to your new, improved wardrobe after all your hard work! so you can easily let them go.

SNAITH
DNfourteen May 2014
Labelled as the gateway to Yorkshire, Snaith is a stunning town built on Anglo Saxon foundations. Like many other towns in the area, it has a church, the Priory Church at the heart of the area. It was granted as a Grade I listed building, in 1967. For a small place, it is certainly busy with cafes, restaurants and five public houses, with one, the Old Mill Brewery, based in a former corn mill, which dates back to the 18th century. Snaith has a rich heritage, with the lands being used for hunting by several Kings of England. Parliament was also once held here, led by Edward II, in 1323AD. The Snaith sausage is made here, by a local butcher, and is extremely popular with tourists. Many have come from places around the country, and sometimes worldwide, to try this local delicacy. The area also holds an annual festival every September, which attracts many people, to celebrate the diverse talents in the area, from both young, and older, locals. This can include anything the person wants to do, and is a great day out for people from and around Snaith.

Why Men Need to Feel in Control
Support Your Local Economy
When it comes to relationships, often you will find that men need to feel in control. They like to feel that they have the last say in everything that happens in the home. It is something that can cause problems in a relationship; particularly in this day and age when women are more powerful than ever before. Modern women want to be in control of things too. What you have to learn if you are a powerful, strong woman is that you need to make him feel like he is in control. Even if behind the scenes you are really the one running the show, you still need to make it look like your man is. What Being in Control Means to Your Man Being in control of everything from the TV to the financial decisions in the home is what gives your partner the sense of being a man. Men are brought up to believe that they are the sole providers and they need to take care of their families. This sense of control gives them an air of importance and it makes them feel needed. So when the woman in the relationship starts making decisions and being in control of everything, it makes him feel like he isn’t really needed anymore. He may not feel like a proper man. Of course for modern women this seems ridiculous. You may feel the need to tell him how stupid he is being. Don’t! By putting him down for something that he has been brought up to believe you will further make him feel bad about his position in the relationship. The less he feels like a man, the more chance there is of him searching for a woman who makes him feel like a man. By putting him
23
down you will essentially drive him away. How to Make Him Feel Like He is in Control To make your partner feel like he is in control it is actually quite simple. Start including him in more decisions. Even if you already know how to do something, pretend that you don’t and get him to show you. This will make him feel needed. Never put down his ideas. Listen to him and praise him for the ideas that he comes up with. Discuss any plans that you have been making with him. This will keep him in the loop and he will feel much more involved than if you just charge ahead and do things by yourself. These are just some of the great tips to make him feel like he is in control even when it is you running the show.

Is Dark Chocolate Really Healthy for You? What woman doesn’t love chocolate? Sweets of any sort will release endorphins, those chemicals in the brain that make you feel relaxed and happy. Of course they all taste yummy as well! But is dark chocolate good for you, as some have reported? If so, how?
DNfourteen May 2014
chocolate and white chocolate do not contain a high enough concentration of these elements to make a difference in your system. These flavonoids that fight free radicals help to ward off the signs of age; they also relax your blood pressure because of the nitric oxide they contain.
One thing to remember is that chocolate comes from cocoa beans, which are from plants. In other words, chocolate is a natural food, unlike sodas and other sweet foods made from chemicals. Dark chocolate is less processed than milk chocolate so it has many of the bean’s original elements, some 65% more of those cocoa’s beans properties. Flavonoids are the main ingredient in dark chocolate that offer health benefits; these have antioxidant properties which fight free radicals, those elements that are harmful to your body’s cells. Regular milk
Many report that a small bit of dark chocolate every day helps with heart health and keeping the circulatory system healthy. Dark chocolate can also make you feel relaxed, as you’ve given yourself a small “treat.” However, this doesn’t mean you should eat a large bar or bag of dark chocolate every day and expect to stay healthy. Dark chocolate still contains a large amount of sugar and some fats, which can make you overweight and interfere with healthy blood sugar production. Instead, consider a small square once or twice per week, and be sure that you’re minding your calories and fat intake in all other parts of your diet as well.

High-Fibre Diets … What are They and are They Beneficial?
27
Baked goods that are high in fibre are those with whole grains; white flour products include processed grains that have much of their fibre stripped away. Think of very dark breads and muffins, as these will have more fibre in their content.
Fibre is a substance found only in plants and plant products, meaning fruits and vegetables, but not in meat or dairy products. A high-fibre diet can be very beneficial for you in many different ways. One reason is that fibre doesn’t break down and get absorbed into the system the way other nutritional elements are absorbed, so it makes you feel full. Those who follow a diet or eating plan high in fibre typically eat less overall, and have fewer cravings since they feel full longer. Fibre also binds to other foods and helps them to move along the digestive tract, so you have fewer problems with constipation when you eat lots of fibre. You also absorb more nutrients since foods break down more readily, so they’re absorbed in your system more readily.
It’s also easy to add fibre to your diet by thinking of how to add grains to your everyday routine. Have oatmeal for breakfast rather than a sugary cereal, or switch to a dark rye or whole grain toast. Include a salad with every dinner, and choose fruit for a snack rather than chips or something sugary. This will mean more fibre, more nutrients, and better health overall.
How do you add fibre to your diet? Eating raw fibre can mean digestive problems such as gas or bloating since it doesn’t move through your system very well, but eating more foods with whole fibre can be beneficial. This means fresh fruit and especially the peel or core of fruits, such as the skin of apples and pulp in oranges. Leafy greens and raw vegetables are also full of fibre.

Relationships
How Do You Know if a Man Is Good for You? DNfourteen May 2014
It is good to think about a man being the right choice for you before you invest too much time and emotional energy into a relationship. A man might seem like a nice guy that your friends approve, but he just does not seem to work for you. Before you get too involved in another relationship that turns out to be a mistake, consider these signs to tell you if a man is good for you personally.
Sharing the things that are important to you and respecting them is a sign that someone is good for you. This will be different for every woman because every woman will have something different that is important to her. Some women find family to be very important while others spend little time with their families. Some women are very involved with their careers while others see their job as just a job. You might find that religion or volunteer work is important to you, or you might be an ambitious person that enjoys money and the finer things in life. Define the important things in your life and then consider if he finds them important as well.
Please mention
29
Respect for you as a person is also a sign that this man is good for you. He should respect your feelings, opinions, and decisions even if he does not agree with them. Respect does not mean always doing things your way but it does mean talking through disagreements rather than stubbornly insisting you give in to him. It also means not making fun of you, insulting you, or making crude comments about you or your life or those decisions. You and your man may disagree on religion or politics or career options, or he might not like your friends or how you spend your money, but he should show respect to you in all areas of your life. It is also good to note if your man respects your relationship overall. Everyone needs their own time and space, but if he consistently forgets dates, drops plans with you at the last minute because he got a ‘better offer,’ or never takes holidays and anniversaries seriously, he may not be the best thing for you. These actions show that he does not really value your relationship and this is never a good thing for any woman. If you have any serious doubts about a man being good for you, talk to your friends or take some time to consider those doubts carefully. You deserve to be with someone who is good for you, so never settle for less.

Check Out Our Brand New Look!
We have a brand new daytime line up here at 99.8 KCFM – and there’s nothing they lack in experience, brains and erm …beauty? They’re a very obliging bunch – we just asked them to line up against the wall and smile, and bingo! ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ starts the day – he’s the early riser of the bunch and is the one in the middle – we’ve airbrushed away the bags under his eyes. Sam Heywood’s on between 10am and 2pm - she’s the one that’s a girl. Then Rob Langley’s on KCFM Drive until 7pm – you can probably work out which one he is now. We decided to get right to the nitty gritty and find out what we should know about each one of them. “Tea and cake for me” says Matt. Literally wherever he goes he’ll either have a cuppa, a cake, or both. Trying to get him to walk past a branch of Greggs or Coopers is an absolute nightmare! Sam Heywood is a multi-tasker apparently (typical woman). “Even whilst chatting to you I’m preparing tea, hoovering, writing a novel and painting the outside of the house” she says. It must be a quiet day. Rob Langley is the gadget man, with a particular weakness for mobile phones. “It is true that I have more phones than ears to listen to them with – but I don’t care” says Rob. Despite being a sucker for the latest must have he’s still a nightmare to get hold of at the weekend, how does that work?
Admission: £2 Adults - £1 Children • FREE Parking (Sorry no Dogs Allowed except Hearing and Guide Dogs)
Please mention
There’s loads to listen to during Daytime on 99.8 KCFM that we can only give you the highlights. ‘The KCFM Breakfast Show with Matt Hutchinson’ is out and about visiting a different place in East Yorkshire every week on ‘Right Up Your Street’. Plus Matt’s always going to different schools (chatting up the dinner ladies to get pudding) and asking the children to describe items so that you can guess what they are in ‘Smalltalk’. Find out more by going to the Breakfast page on the website, www.kcfm.co.uk. Sam’s show starts with the mighty ‘Ten @ Ten’ – ten songs from one chosen year at 10am. She’ll help you work out which year by giving clues and playing news, sport, TV and movie clips. Rob Langley’s on Drive when you’re collecting the children from school or doing the run home from work in rush hour. He’ll give you the choice of two big songs on ‘The School Run is Fun’ – the one with the most votes gets played. It almost goes without saying that during the whole day you can expect the very latest travel and weather information, plus local news and sport updates so you know what’s happening across the whole of East Yorkshire – we’re good at that!
when responding to our advertisers. Thank You. Our music is also pretty darn good (even if we do say so ourselves!) We play songs from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, noughties and the very latest music too – but we only play the best songs from each decade, so you’ll like every single one. Plus, we play more music than anyone else – so you won’t hear the same songs again and again and again.
