DNfourteen: Supporting The Local Economy

Don’t Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk I can hear her as if it were yesterday. I’d be pouring over a page of apparently impossible simultaneous equations or indecipherable poetry and mum would say, “Stop what you’re doing and go for a walk round the garden. You’ll think better after some fresh air.” And, do you know what? As mums so often are about these things; she was absolutely right.

So is there any actual science to back up this hunch? It would appear so. A recent article published by ‘Business Insider’ highlighted a study conducted by Marily Oppezzo, a Stanford doctoral graduate in educational psychology, and Daniel Schwartz, a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education which appears to prove that people are more creative when they are walking then when they are seated.

This piece of maternal advice has been my companion into adult life and even today if I need to solve a problem or organise my thoughts I go for a little walk.

4

It seems to me that walking is not only good for the body but also good for the soul. Those 10,000 steps we should be taking every day could not only put us on the path to bodily vitality but also on the road to higher planes of thought. Just think, your brisk stroll to collect the Sunday papers could be the catalyst for that Eureka moment to make you a millionaire. Famously, Beethoven created sonatas and symphonies while strolling through the verdant Vienna Woods and the late Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple) was a great advocate of ‘walking meetings’. Furthermore, in addition to these masters of creativity I am not the only one giving my brain a walk to banish cranial congestion. A quick chat to a few members of Goole’s ‘Let’s Get Walking’ group for ladies (who meet on Mondays at 18:20 at West Park car park) revealed that if they walked at lunchtime they felt refreshed and worked to a higher standard in the afternoon compared to if they had stayed at their desks.

Also, during my research I found that ‘Walk and Talk’ therapy is becoming increasingly popular among psychologists and counsellors as a way to encourage clients to problem solve. The idea behind this is that the multi-sensory experience and open spaces allow people to talk freely in a non-confrontational setting. On the other hand, Oppezzo and Schwartz’s study found that people didn’t necessarily have to be walking outside to stimulate creativity as people who walked on treadmills were also more creative than those who were not moving.

I guess if you take the study and the anecdotal evidence to its natural conclusion then company Another keen walker from the Rose and Crown walking directors should be following in the footsteps of Steve club in Rawcliffe said that there was no doubt in their Jobs and taking their staff out of the ‘boredroom’ and mind that a walk in the countryside while chatting down to the park for some blue sky thinking. to likeminded people cleared their heads and helped Article: Claire Rick, Goole. their thought processes. If cost is discouraging you from trying to make changes to you and your family’s diet then read on: healthy eating doesn’t have to cost more. Be strict about buying only what you’ll actually eat. Plan your meals so that all ingredients on your list get used and that includes fresh herbs like basil or parsley. If necessary, freeze any unused food. Freezer bags and food storage boxes will come in handy. Eat leftovers for lunch Cooking extra portions for your evening meal so that you can have the leftovers for lunch the next day saves time and money, and can be a healthier option than the traditional “mayo-laden sandwich, crisps and soft drink desk-lunch” option. Plan your week’s meals to include ingredients you’ve already got in and avoid buying items you already have. Check use-by dates to make sure you use up ingredents before they go off. Buy cheaper cuts If you’re prepared to take a little more time with your cooking, buying cheaper cuts of meat is a great way to save. Choosing a cheaper cut of meat, such as braising steak, shin or shoulder, doesn’t mean missing out on a tasty meal. Slow cooking gradually breaks down the fibres in cheaper cuts, giving great taste at a lower cost.

Check out Change4Life’s meal mixer, Love Food Hate Waste, The Skint Foodie, A Girl Called Jack, Frugal Queen and The Resourceful Cook for some recipe inspiration. The Psychology of Colours Change the colour of your room and improve your mood. Much like music, colour can alter your mood and behavior on a subconscious yet profound level — so profound, in fact, that researchers have spent years studying how the human brain responds to specific hues in various social settings. When it comes to your home, color may beat decor in terms of setting the vibe from room to room. So read on, pick your paint, and (happily, excitedly, or peacefully) kiss bare white walls goodbye.

Reds

16

Aside from Big’s (of Sex and the City fame) infamous blood red bedroom accent wall, red paint is usually found in common areas — kitchens, living rooms, and most frequently, dining rooms — if at all. Seeing the stimulating colour has been linked to increased pulse rate, heart rate, and blood pressure, which explains why it’s often regarded as the colour of love, sex, and aggression. (Studies have shown that men are more attracted to women wearing red dresses versus other colours.) While the shade encourages socializing and bonding, making it a great fit for gathering spots, it may also prompt you to eat more. Darker, subdued tones (oxblood, for example) could potentially reduce those negative effects.

Oranges Fabulous for a home office (if you’re lucky enough to have one), orange is invigorating by day and cozy by night. A blend of two rousing colours, orange works well in social areas, especially foyers where people tend to mingle. But you may want to skip it in restful spaces, like your bedroom, unless it’s in small doses.

Yellows If you think about what is yellow — the sun, light bulbs, summertime daffodils — it makes sense that yellow is an energizing colour. The warm, welcoming shade stimulates the nervous system and promotes creativity — but proceed with caution. Studies have shown it can cause overstimulation, leading to feelings of anxiety, frustration, and anger. An accent wall in a pale Post-It-note hue in your kitchen or living room could be the perfect balance. Please mention when responding to advertisers. Thank you.

Five Tips That Everyone Should Know 1. To avoid getting paint on the floor, glue a paper plate to the bottom of the paint can. The plate should be five to eight centimeters wider than the can so it can catch drips. 2. To cover any scratches on wood furniture or floorboards, make a thick paste of instant coffee and a little water. Rub it into the nicks and scratches. You may need to apply several layers before the scratch is covered. Allow to dry, then apply a layer of furniture polish. Shoe polish is an excellent alternative and comes in a variety of colours. It works a treat. 3. Fix a squeaky door by sprinkling talcum powder on the hinges. This also works great for squeaky floorboards. 4. To keep paint fresh, all you need to do is add four tablespoons of methylated spirits, then seal and store. Do not stir until using paint again.

18

5. Make threading a needle easier by squirting the thread with hairspray to make it stiff.

5 Steps to Become a Better Gardener... Often times, we as gardeners, struggle with the simplest things,” says Ian Ashbridge, director of horticulture at Heritage Landscape & Garden Centre. “I’ve developed five rules to make you a better gardener.” They are:

1. USE WHAT YOU HAVE. We may love that full-sun perennial, but if we garden in the shade, we should look for plants that do well there. You can bend some rules, but finding the right plants for Share a piece. Get involved in your local the right space is not guesswork. Do your gardening club. Most of my favourite research. plants have come to me as gifts from family, friends and colleagues. I really do enjoy giving plants away too.

2. KEEP A JOURNAL. Record things like where a plant came from, dates that you plant, divide and harvest. Write down the problems you run into and the solutions you find. You’ll be surprised how handy this becomes year after year. Many times, problems can be avoided or success can be achieved by reading over what has been done in the past. 3. CULTIVATE FRIENDS. One of the most rewarding parts of gardening is the social aspect. Share your plants. Perennials love to be divided; this recharges and invigorates the plants. Do you have a neighbour that always raves about a plant in your garden? Please mention

4. MULCH. Top-dressing with good mulch improves gardens. It’s a scientific fact. Mulched soils stay cooler in the summer and mulch helps regulate swings in moisture. Mulch insulates plants in the winter and regulates soil temperatures better then un-mulched ground. I like to use a composted hardwood bark. As mulch breaks down, nutrients become available to your plants and the microbiology of the soil improves.

5. SPEND TIME IN YOUR GARDEN. Enjoy the space you’ve created. When we spend time in the garden with our hands in the soil and our knees on the ground, something special happens. We connect with our surroundings in a way that can’t happen through a window. This familiar adage is true: The best fertilizer is the shadow of the gardener.

Along with all the flourish and splendour this month, weeds are thriving too, so keep on top of the situation; hoe on warm days and leave them on the surface to wither and die in the sun. Another constant task around the garden at this time of year is deadheading - remove spent flowers from containers, pots, hanging baskets, beds and borders and feed them all occasionally with liquid feed. Deadheading diverts energy from producing seed into producing new flowers.....so is a good thing all round. Theoretically we should be home and dry now weather-wise, but be prepared Brownie-style in case of a late frost - keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast and don’t be tempted to put out your really tender plants until the middle of the month unless the weather changes dramatically. If it’s dry, attack ground elder, lords and ladies and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. Water is a precious commodity – instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water, however, for lime-

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre hating plants such as camellias - they will not thank you for it! Automatic watering systems are economical with water, as well as convenient, so consider installing one sooner rather than later. Watering is essential once the weather is drier and warmer - water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy) - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour - hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so.

Gardening The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Beforehand, soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae.

Number Crunching 25 is the average number of sites logged into daily. 73% of people use the same password for everything. 6 characters in average password. 3 minutes taken to crack an average password. When I saw these statistics I was shocked! Are you among them? If you are then like me, you’d have had a worrying moment or two when the Heartbleed vulnerability hit the news recently. This was a flaw in the Internet Security systems that could permit the removal of confidential data from what we once considered to be secure sites. Frightening Stuff.

could hope to remember for longer than 2 minutes. Suddenly jane1964 has become t7V1G9rqnHw1 – creating the memory nightmare we had hoped to avoid! Writing them all down somewhere safe is one way to keep track of them – but how about when you can’t get to the list – or you lose the list?? For years now I’ve used a password manager program to take care of my entire online password collection. LastPass [www. lastpass.com] stores all my many passwords behind secure encryption and I only have to remember one single password to gain access to all the others. This simple system is available in both free and paid versions (the paid version, which offers extended coverage on tablets and phone apps, only costs $12 a year).

Frankly, when you have a whole bunch of things to remember it seems easier to use one or two passwords - with the odd variation or two. Clearly that isn’t enough anymore – The numbers tell us we need to be more careful and one of the ways to do this is to have a different password for every site.

We all have programs we use every day that are like our right arm – we’d be lost without them - for me LastPass is one of those must have’s. I think it’s worth ten times the money and once you’ve started using it, I’m sure you’ll agree with me! The time and frustration savings alone are incredible for anyone who uses their computer on a regular basis. Don’t be another password statistic – give it a try today!

Ideally each of your passwords should be more than 8 characters long and made up of a combination of letters, numbers and punctuation characters – in mixed lower and upper case. In other words each password will be something no human being

The audience will be mesmerised by the absolute balance and harmony achieved by these beautiful White Lipizzaner stallions and their regal riders. All of their famous in-hand work and movements above the ground such as the Capriole, Levade and Courbette will be performed. TV presenter and British Dressage Ambassador, Nicki Chapman will be hosting the event and will be joined by special guests making this 2014 Spanish Riding School of Vienna Tour one of the most unique, exciting and captivating events of the equestrian year.

DNfourteen: Supporting The Local Economy Cook from scratch One in every six meals is eaten out of the home, according to a Public Health England study (PDF, 776kb). Of particular concern are hot food takeaways, which tend to be high in fat and salt, and low in fibre, fruit and vegetables. Cutting back on takeaways could save you up to £800 a year and inches off your waist! Preparing and cooking your own meals is generally cheaper than buying a takeaway or a ready meal, and because it’s easier to control what goes in to your dish, it can be healthier. Buy chicken whole The cheapest way to buy chicken is to buy a whole chicken. It’s often more expensive to buy two pre-cut chicken breasts than a whole chicken. From a whole chicken, you’ll get two breasts, two thighs, two drumsticks, plus a carcass and wings for making stock. Consider the deli counter for cheese and cured meats. You can get exact amounts, which is cheaper and less wasteful.

Price-check pre-packaged produce Fruit and vegetables sometimes cost more pre-packaged than loose. Check the price per weight (for example £/ kg). Stores know that consumers want to buy in bulk, and so they mix it up: sometimes the packaged produce is cheaper, sometimes it’s more expensive. Also, prepackaged isn’t always the freshest and you may end up with more than you need. Cut down on luxuries If your regular shopping basket tends to include fizzy

FIONA’S WORD

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

38

HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME This is an increasingly hot topic at this time of year and it can be very difficult, as a parent, to make the right call. Of course, the majority of us agree that children should be in school during term time and it’s not a good option to take them out of the classroom. But with the dramatically increasing number of parents being fined for doing exactly that, something surely has to change. High prices of holidays during school breaks is one of the main contributing factors, so surely we, and the government, should be putting more pressure on the greedy holiday companies who double and triple their prices as soon as school breaks up. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see what changes, if any, they will make to pricing if more schools start to use their new powers to set their term dates. ON-LINE SHOPPING On-line shopping seems to be great – and I’m always amazed when it works and my package gets delivered or I’ve reserved it and picked it up in store! I always think “This is definitely the way to shop. I must do that more often!” But do I? No I don’t! I don’t know why that is, but I think I may have to change my habits. It saves so much time and takes a lot of the stress out of shopping. Although if you’re waiting for something and it doesn’t arrive on time, what then? And what about buying clothes online? I’ve done it for the children because I know what size to buy, but not for myself. I like to try things on to see how they fit and it just sounds like too much of a hassle to start ordering different sizes and sending the wrong one back. Is that lazy? Am I missing something? I probably am. Perhaps I’ll experiment! Saying that, I’m slightly concerned that I might enjoy shopping for clothes online much more than my credit card will!
