Women are smarter than men - it’s official! Did you know? l UK diners are creating a ‘fast dining’ culture with two in five (41%) now booking restaurants through mobiles and tablets. l Women are leading the trend, accounting for 61% of bookings from smart devices, compared to just 39 % of men. l Two fifths (44%) make reservations to a new restaurant for the first time through a mobile device. l Brits spend an average of 11 minutes browsing the website before making their booking. l Two in five (41%) diners now booking restaurants through tablets or mobiles, compared to 7% in 2011, according to new research.

The research, based on over 850,000 Bookatable users, was carried out in conjunction with the launch of the new Bookatable app to better understand the dining and restaurant booking behaviour of Britons.[source www. bookatable.com] There’s no doubt in my mind that the figures will be skewed towards London and the South East - but where they lead the rest of us will surely be following. Frankly I’d like to think I’m taking a step in the other direction! Recently I’ve been trying to wean myself off the ‘always connected’ smart phone, after realising a week or two ago that the thing had virtually taken over my life!

taps - maybe they were whispering sweet nothings to each other via text or twitter, who knows what passes for communication these days? Not for me. Thanks but no thanks! Slowly but surely I am taking back the controls! Email is set to manual - Phone is OFF in meetings, public places, cars, at night and during mealtimes. It’s no longer so easy for me to wake with the alarm, just roll over and check my mail on the way out of bed! I’ve given up checking the screen last thing at night. And guess what? I seem to have a lot more time on my hands! Endlessly picking up, checking and putting down the phone must have been taking its toll on the minutes over the course of every day. I’m no Luddite - I love technology, it’s how I make my living - but is it possible that in amongst the glittery, shiny cleverness of it all, we sometimes forget who’s the boss?

I’m clearly not on my own in that respect - enjoying a meal at Jay Jay’s in Howden the other night, I was amazed to see a couple enter the room, take a table and not pass a word to each other, apart Happy Googling! from ordering the food and wine. Their entire evening was occupied by endless blips, beeps and keyboard Steve “Old Googler” Elliott E: steve@oldgoogler.com To contact please Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • Telephone: 01964 552 470

FREE NHS HEALTH CHECKS ACROSS THE EAST RIDING

10

Free NHS health checks offered to people aged between 40 and 74 years are being rolled out across the whole of the East Riding, following a pilot scheme in some parts of the area. The five-yearly checks are now available from providers across the region, including some GP practices, pharmacies, East Riding of Yorkshire Council leisure centres and by the health trainers. The checks will assess a person’s risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and dementia. By taking early action, steps can be taken to improve health and help to prevent the onset of these conditions. As this service aims to identify people at risk of developing cardiovascular conditions, anyone who is already being treated by a health care professional for any of the conditions listed or has been prescribed medication for these conditions, such as statins, does not need to be re-assessed and is therefore not eligible for the service. Checks take 20 to 30 minutes and are based on straightforward questions and measurements, such as age, gender, family history, height, weight and blood pressure. Cont..P12

Continued from page 10 There will also be a simple blood test to measure cholesterol levels. After the check is completed, the results will be discussed and advice will be offered, such as how to get help to give up smoking, to be more active, to eat healthily or to cut back on alcohol. If necessary, the person who has had the check can be referred to other services. The results of the check will be passed to their GP. Last year the pilot project carried out more than 6,500 health checks for people living in the East Riding. Now it is hoped that thousands more will take up the offer. Residents wanting to have a check can find out more about the service at www.eastriding.gov.uk/health-checks Councillor Jonathan Owen, chairman of the East Riding health and wellbeing board, said: “I cannot urge people strongly enough to take advantage of having a health check. “Catching the early signs of conditions that may develop later in life means that steps can be taken at an early stage to prevent illness developing and simple changes to lifestyle can often have significant impact on living a longer, healthier life.

Start Gardening with your Children! One of the best ways to get children interested in gardening and to keep them motivated is to give them their own garden patch. This can either be a small area in your garden or a container. If it’s a patch in your garden, it’s best to keep it small (especially for young kids) and be sure that it’s in the spot with the best soil and light. We want these gardens to be a success!

Containers are a good idea, because they can be moved around. This may be particularly helpful in inclement weather or to fit the plants’ sunlight needs. You can use proper plant pots or recycle jars or plastic containers.

The History and Tradition The tradition of drinking tea plays a large role in British culture. But did you know that this tradition actually began thanks to Portugal? In 1662, Charles II married the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza. They were both accustomed to drinking tea, a scarce luxury good at that time. It is said that she arrived in England with copious amounts of tea, and she became known as the first English tea-drinking queen. The drink soon became popular amongst all who could afford this luxury. While the tradition of drinking tea may have stemmed from the Portuguese, the tradition of afternoon tea, however, is indeed very British. In the 18th and 19th centuries, dinner was eaten quite late amongst the middle and upper classes, hours after the light luncheon meal. In the early 19th century, Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, took to drinking tea and having a light snack in the afternoon to keep up off her hunger between meals. The tradition caught on by Anna inviting guests to join her. By the 1860s, the ritual had become widespread. There are several variations on the tradition of afternoon tea. Traditionally, tea with milk and sugar provided strength in the afternoon for the 19th and early 20th century English working poor. Labour workers often accompanied the tea with a small sandwich or scone. The more privileged drank their tea with luxury ingredient sandwiches (such as the customary cucumber), scones with clotted cream and jam, and sweets and pastries. The latter is what most people today think of when they think of afternoon tea and is, in fact, the closest to Anna’s rituals. As she and her circle were the highest of classes, afternoon tea was surrounded by etiquette, fashion, and elegance.

Another member was Thomas Garlick who lived at Church Hall Farm in Whitgift, his and his family tombs are found in Whitgift Church Yard. John Garlick (pictured left), born 1852, was the grandson of Henry Garlick and became a self made millionaire after immigrating to South Africa. When he was 10 years old his father died of tuberculosis and his family was poorly provided for. At the age of 20 John decided to immigrate to South Africa, where the digging of diamonds was in its infancy. He found a job in a retail shop and then later began his own business. Since producing our own web page the MLHG has had numerous requests for help in researching their family members who had originated in the Marshland area. One such person was a South African lady, Sherry Stanton, who is a descendant of the Garlick Family who lived in the Marshland Area. They were Yeoman farmers. The farm became known as Garlick Farm and in later years the local people thought it was because they farmed garlic! Sherry was under the misunderstanding that they came from Hook since the family graves are in Hook Church yard. After much research in the Archives at Wakefield we found deeds concerning their farm built in Goole Fields, one of which mentions the building of

From the beginning it was apparent that John Garlick was a progressive thinker who applied technological advances to his business. One of his new stores, built in Alderley Street in 1892, had lifts, electric lights throughout and automatic fire sprinklers. A few years later South Africa’s first steel framed skyscraper with nine stories was built for John Garlick. It was the tallest building in the Cape at the time and it was in this building that the first escalators in South Africa were tried out. Unfortunately the store no longer exists. In 1918 he became involved with the “The Nelspoort Tuberculosis Sanatorium”. The Nelspoort story actually has its beginnings in Cape Town where tuberculosis was rampant, and the death rate soared. Doctors discovered many who swore breathing the fresh, clear, crisp air had cured their ailments. Then in 1911, philanthropist John Garlick, founder of one of the country’s leading departmental stores (pictured below), joined Dr Anderson’s Society for the Prevention of Consumption. Garlick was appalled at the toll tuberculoses was taking, particularly in the Cape Coloured areas such as District Six. The death rate terrified him, and he vowed to “stem this dreadful tide.” Thomas Mann’s novel “The Magic Mountain”, which tells of a sanatorium in the Alps, convinced him such a place could be created in the Great Karoo. Garlick immediately set about turning his dream into reality. In 1918, he donated £25,000 to Dr Anderson’s cause on condition the Cape Municipal Association donated a similar amount and that the funds be used to establish an institution for consumptives. Sherry, his great granddaughter, led us to believe that he was the first person to import a car into South Africa. www.marshlandlocalhistorygroup.co.uk Photo 2 - Advertising leaflet for the store • Photo 3 - Memorial Plaque to John Garlick as donor to the tuberculosis clinic.

FIONA’S WORD

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. MIND YOUR MANNERS

38

I get so frustrated by bad manners. Don’t you? It takes nothing to hold a door open for someone behind you, to smile and say thank you, to wave in acknowledgement when a car pulls in to let you go by, to apologise if you accidentally bump into someone. It’s polite! I’m sure you’ve experienced doing your weekly shop and a till operator in the supermarket insists on describing in detail what they did last night or what they’re planning to do at the weekend to another shop assistant. Doesn’t it drive you crazy?! Then when they give you the wrong change or they’ve put the same item through twice, whilst they are more than apologetic, I find myself saying (in my head!) “Well, if you’d been concentrating on what you were doing, it probably wouldn’t have happened!” Would it be rude if I said it out loud?! Anyway, my point is - be nice and be considerate. Come on – it’s not hard and good manners cost you nothing! RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

We’ve probably all heard about the concept Paying It Forward – performing a random act of kindness for the sole purpose of helping someone in need or cheering someone up. It’s a great model to live by and it’s really not hard to do. Too many people get caught up in their own lives and have tunnel vision about what’s going on around them. Just like you remember someone who has been really rude to you, you also remember the person who gave you a smile when you needed it most, helped you up when you tripped over, gave you a one pound coin for the supermarket trolley because you had no change, paid for your coffee when you realised your purse was in your other handbag. It doesn’t have to be much – but these small acts of kindness make the whole world a much nicer place to live in.
