Holidays
Cost Saving Holiday Hacks When you’re on holiday it’s great to have a plan and one you can change if you need to. By being prepared you can save yourself stress and money, so while it may sound tiresome now, when you’re on the spot you’ll be glad you’ve done it! MAKE & STICK TO A BUDGET This may sound obvious but you’ll need to last for the rest of the month when you get back, so by setting a budget and sticking to it you’ll be able to relax without worrying that you’ll be adding to your own stress later.
6
PLAN AHEAD Plan your meals, shop online and have it delivered, or find your local supermarket and hit it early on. Leave gaps for meals out so you have treats and so you don’t end up overstocking, but by planning ahead you’ll have all you need at a reasonable price and not be tempted to keep food shopping. By planning a bit better, you can release money for the treats you really fancy.

DEALS AND COUPONS There’s a fair chance that some attractions give discounts for people that book in advance through their websites. Most Theme Parks and Cinemas do! It can also fast track you into the venue by avoiding lengthy ques. Join the National Trust and get discounted entry to their portfolio of stately homes and attractions. Join the RSPB for example. If you are going to London check out the daily all zone travel card deals for the Underground and TFL Buses. The internet will also give you access to vouchers and deals for restaurants and a multitude of venues and events. One of the best searches you can do is: Free attractions (Name of City/Town) – on www.tripadvisor.co.uk PARKING Plan visits and days out by looking for parking availability and car park locations and costs ahead of your visit. Identify local Park and Ride schemes which are essential and save you huge amounts of money and stress when visiting places like York and Oxford. Over the course of a week these little savings can all add up.
PACE YOUR MEALS OUT By planning your days ahead, you can also plan when and where you’ll most benefit from the meals out so you can pace them a throughout the week. PACK AHEAD If you’re on a tight budget the last thing you’II want to spend your holiday budget on is clothes or items you’ve left behind - pack well ahead, set clothes aside and create a list for anything you might need to drop in at the last minute. Don’t forget to check if items such as towels and bedding are included in your accommodation. Not only will you make your packing quicker and less stressful, but you’ll be less likely to have to buy items you’ve left behind.

Literature
New books for August Murder Before Evensong by Reverend Richard Coles Canon Daniel Clement is rector of Champton. He has been there for eight years, living at the rectory alongside his widowed mother – the opinionated, fearless, everso-slightly annoying Audrey – and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in the church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided: as lines are drawn, long-buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of the village. And then Anthony Bowness – cousin to Bernard de Floures, patron of Champton – is found dead at the back of the church, stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs. As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together – and catch a killer.

The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood Hargrave Strasbourg, 1518. In the middle of a blisteringly hot summer, a lone woman begins to dance in the city square. She dances for days without pause or rest and, as she is joined by hundreds of others, the authorities declare an emergency. Musicians will be brought in to play the devil out of these women. Just beyond the city’s limits, pregnant Lisbet lives with her mother-in-law and husband, tending the bees that are their livelihood. And then, as the dancing plague gathers momentum, Lisbet’s sister-in-law Nethe returns from seven years’ penance in the mountains for a crime no one will name. It is a secret Lisbet is determined to uncover. As the city buckles under the beat of a thousand feet, she finds herself thrust into a dangerous web of deceit and clandestine passion, but she is dancing to a dangerous tune. Set in an era of superstition, hysteria and extraordinary change, and inspired by the true events of a doomed summer, The Dance Tree is a story of family secrets, forbidden love and women pushed to the edge.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus This is a great book to get stuck into ahead of its TV adaptation later this year. Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth would be the first to point out there is no such thing. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with – of all things – her mind. A few years later, Elizabeth finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show, Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon of acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. As her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo. Mother’s Boy by Patrick Gale Laura, an impoverished Cornish girl, meets her husband when they are both in service in Teignmouth in 1916. They have a baby, Charles, but Laura’s husband returns home from the trenches a damaged man, already ill with the tuberculosis that will soon leave her a widow. In a small, class-obsessed town she raises her boy alone, working as a laundress, and gradually becomes aware that he is some kind of genius. As an intensely private young man, Charles signs up for the navy with the new rank of coder. His escape from the tight, gossipy confines of Launceston to the colour and violence of war sees him blossom as he experiences not only the possibility of death, but the constant danger of a love that is as clandestine as his work. Mother’s Boy is the story of a man being shaped for a long, remarkable and revered life spent hiding in plain sight. But it is equally the story of the tireless mother who will continue to shield him long after the dangers of war are past.

Gardening
Planting in August August is a great time to sow seeds and plant young plants in the UK. On the vegetable patch, sowing and planting out now will keep your cropping season going, providing you with short-term harvests of salad leaves and other quick-growing crops such as radishes, along with longer-cropping plants like winter cabbages. For veg that need a bit of time to crop well, planting in August will ensure plants get plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures before autumn sets in.
12
In ornamental borders and cuttings patches, August is a great time to get ahead and plan for the following year. Sowing hardy annuals now will give you an early crop of flowers in spring, while biennials sown in August will flower by the following summer. Bear in mind that, while warm August temperatures are perfect for aiding seed germination, the water table is lower so you may need to provide additional water to seedlings and newly planted plants.
growth is rapid. Thin in late August or early September. Module-sown seed can be thinned to two or three roots in each, for planting out in late August. Fleece or mesh help keep pigeons, butterflies and cabbage root fly at bay.
Vegetables to plant in August Spinach Sown in late August, spinach can provide a crop of young leaves in October and then enter dormancy over winter, ready to provide a fresh crop of leaves in early spring. survive harsh frosts and rain. Sow direct in well-prepared, fertile soil, and cover with a low cloche when temperatures start to fall. Rocket Wild rocket sown in early August will provide you with a crop of fresh leaves before winter, and then lie dormant until March, when it will put on new growth. Salad rocket stands the best chance of surviving frosts if sown in late August. It also offers more leaves in winter than wild rocket, but often bolts in April. Spring onions Onions don’t germinate well in temperatures regularly above 20°C, so bear this in mind when sowing in August. Either sow direct in rows outdoors, with seed covered by 2cm of soil, or in modules, with up to 10 seeds in each, for a harvestable ‘clump’ in spring.
Cabbages Spring cabbages can be sown direct outdoors, or indoors in modules to be planted out later, while winter cabbages grown from seed in previous months should be planted out now. Protect from cabbage white caterpillars and pigeons using fine netting suspended 1m off the ground to protect hedgehogs, or a bespoke cage. Flowers to plant in August Pot marigold Colourful and easy to grow, Calendula can be sown in August and September, for flowers in the following spring. They’re hardy, so simply direct sow them where they are to flower, either in shallow drills on the ground or in pots. Cornflowers As with pot marigold, you can sow cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) in August for May flowers. Cultivars to sow and grow include ‘Black Ball’, which has deep chocolate-coloured blooms, and ‘Blue Ball’. Sow direct in shallow drills in the soil or on the surface of moist, peat-free compost in pots.
Turnips Turnips are best sown direct and then thinned. Sow seeds sparingly because, although they’re tiny, they all seem to germinate and subsequent

Fiona’s Word Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. 10 minutes of Zen could prevent Alzheimer’s
14
New research backed by the Alzheimer’s Society suggests that engaging in 10-15 minutes of self-reflection every day could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s not clear how it helps exactly. It might be because it makes us calmer, reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol in our blood that has been linked to cognitive decline. Regardless, the study found that older people have significantly better memory, concentration, problem-solving abilities and superior brain health when they set aside time to quietly reflect on work, relationships, social encounters and other experiences. Experts say it could one day “reduce the risk of dementia with psychological treatment that help people build healthy thought patterns.”
August heatwave
We’re set for another heatwave this month with temperatures predicted to reach 32C (90F), so perhaps not as high as the end of July, but still VERY hot. Unsurprisingly, there’s a threat of a drought and hosepipe ban (you’d have thought we’d have figured

out a more effective way to store all the rain we get by now). Anyway, make sure you and your pets drink plenty of water, put some shallow bowls of water out for the hedgehogs or other wildlife in your garden and fill up your bird baths! And keep your curtains closed! I’m looking forward to going to our lovely beaches on the east coast and swimming in the sea – such a great way to cool down – followed by fish and chips and ice-cream.
Watch out for the gulls
Talking of chips, there have been quite a few stories around of seagulls swopping in to steal chips out of people’s hands! And in Bridlington, residents are experiencing delays with their postal deliveries because posties are being harassed by seagulls. I’m not sure if the problem’s got worse or if it’s just because it’s summertime, but either way, you might need to keep your eyes peeled! Stay cool, stay safe – and have a great month.
