COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS Well, Christmas is almost here and we have some great and original ideas for presents in our Countdown to Christmas feature so please do look through the adverts. Have you ever wondered what to get a one-year-old boy now you’ve got teenagers, or your pre-teen god-daughter when your kids are still happy with Stickle Bricks? Here at DNfourteen and our sister magazines we’ve got over 50 children between us, so we’ve got together to make a list of the toys that our children have really loved and played with to help you get a winning present this year. Babies You’ve heard it before, but it’s not worth spending a lot. How about a donation to a savings account and something small like stacking cups, soft toys (Jellycat have some gorgeous ones), fabric books or a new rattle? If you want to spend a bit more, try a play gym or door bouncer, musical toys or something from VTech with lots of flashing lights and noises! Toddlers By now toys are getting more exciting, and sometimes quite large. One of the favourite toys for this age group is a Little Tikes Cosy Coupe – played with for years, even

when they’re almost too big to get out of it! You can often get these in quite good condition secondhand, too. Just as big, and as popular, is a toy kitchen complete with plastic fruit and veg that they can cut up and serve to mum and dad for tea. The HappyLand range from ELC (www.elc. co.uk) is great for this age group – choose from a rocket set, train set, pirate ship, fairy treehouse or the very sweet Rose Cottage. And again anything musical is also sure to be popular. Or try colouring (mess free with Aqua Draw) and sticker books (Usborne First Sticker Books series, www. usbornebooksathome.co.uk for lots and lots of stickers). Preschool girls At this age a lot of little girls are crazy about dolls – try a soft rag doll like Bigjigs or the Manhattan range, where you can also buy outfits and accessories. Or how about a dolls’ pram or buggy? ELC has a good selection. Peppa Pig is perennially popular – choose from playsets, puzzles, books, dvds and much more. The Disney Princesses are also sure to be a hit

– dolls, dressing-up sets, playsets or stationery (www. disneystore.co.uk). My Little Pony has also stood the test of time.

Preschool boys Favourites that seem to be played with for a long time are dressing-up outfits (doctor, fireman, cowboy and pirate) and role-play kits like a doctor’s case or a workbench with lots of nails to hammer down. Thomas the Tank Engine and

Brio trainsets are loved by some little boys, and it’s often easy to find them in good condition on ebay. Dinosaurs are loved by all – ELC have some plastic models of all sizes, or try www.nhmshop.co.uk/dinosaurs. Or how about some pop-up tents and tunnels for getting rid of energy? Duplo is also a good bet, choose from basic bricks or themed sets like a fire station, zoo or farm. Girls 5–8 By now imaginative play has really kicked off – forever popular and loved by many are Sylvanians, choose from families, playsets or a vast array of houses to put them in. Lego Friends is also a good bet. Playmobil has a big range to choose from – farms, fairies, hospitals and more – you might just want to consider constructing it beforehand to avoid lots of time spent fiddling around with small bits on Christmas Day. Craft kits are also popular with this age group, try Hama Beads, ELC for complete, easy-to-follow kits for decorating mermaids, jewellery boxes etc and Yellow Moon (www.yellowmoon.org.uk). And don’t forget Barbie and Build-a-Bear (www.buildabear.co.uk).

Boys 5–8 Lego, lego and more lego, in all its various forms – bricks and wheels, Lego City, Harry Potter, The Hobbit and Star Wars – is always popular and played with for years. And Playmobil again – pirates, knights, vehicles and more to appeal to every interest. Or how about a wooden fort, garage, fire station or workbench – Pintoy make some lovely ones. Construction toys of all shapes and sizes – Geomags panels and magnets, wooden bricks and blocks are also popular. Or try Hot Wheels, Transformers, a marble run or Scalextric. Girls 9–11 While still happy to play with toys, by now girls often love something which makes them feel grown-up – try pretty slippers, little bags, jewellery, scarves, picture frames or a gift card from Claire’s Accessories. DIY baking sets

made up of fairy-cake cases, sprinkles, icing tubes, cutters, apron and a book all put in a pretty tin make a lovely gift. Crafts are still popular – the Klutz range is easily available and a bit more unusual. Or how about Harumika (www. harumika.eu), you dress mannequins in different outfits using bits of material and can upload the creations online. Scrap-booking is often also popular, you could include a voucher for a local class. And of course no matter how many pens, pencils and notepads they have, stationery is always a winner! Boys 9–11 If they’re into sports, it’s easy – kit, clothes, books, dvds on their favourite team or a moment in sporting history are all likely to go down well. Or how about a football goal, kite, skateboards, or cool clothes to protect elbows etc. If they’re musical, a drum kit or guitar (do check with the parents first). Or how about kits to make something (www. sciencemuseum.org.uk). And if they’re into the current obsession of computer game Minecraft, Amazon has a good range of toys to complement it like a torch, collectable figures and a Lego game.

Sam’s Shenanigans

Older kids It might be a case of clubbing together for a high-ticket item like a new bike, but no matter how old you are you still need something to play with on Christmas Day. How about something fun like a hula hoop – you can’t be a grumpy teenager when you’re hooping and there are lots of tutorials on You Tube to learn some cool tricks. Or how about an e-reader, you could always add some of their favourite ebooks – for reluctant readers the novelty factor might just work. And if all else fails, there’s always an iTunes voucher; which leads us to Apple. There’s no denying it an iPod, iTouch or iPad often feature on most kids’ Christmas lists. Maybe they should come with a warning from Santa – to prevent self-destruction, only use for an hour a day when your parents say it’s ok!!!

DN14 ‘NEW YEAR, NEW YOU’ FEATURE It’s that getting to that time of year again when we get past Christmas and the New Year and all the over indulgances that make it a great time. We then all have good intentions and New Years resolutions that we will eat healthier, stop smoking, drink less, look after our bodies and exercise more and generally be better people. However, only a very small percentage of us are strong enough to actually see our resolutions through, myself included (chocholate is my stumbling block!!). So if you want a little help and outside encouragement please look no further than the companies listed in this feature. All our advertisers are here to help you - just give them a call they are always willing to share their experience and insights into all matters that will help you achieve your goals. Hmmm... I can’t seem to find that chocolate therapy advert, oh well, I suppose I’d better finish off the last few Quality Street then!

Seriously though, we have some fantastic advertisers offering everything from weight loss to massage and beauty treatments to personal coaching and everything inbetween. So whatever area of your life you want to improve we have the businesses and people within the local area who can help you. My husband is looking at the prospect of shedding some weight (and not before time - I might hasten to add!!) and he is going to sign up with Steve from Body by Vi and do ‘The Challenge’. He knows a couple of people who have used this new method and lost weight and more importantly kept it off!! So perhaps I will get that new super slim and sexy husband after all! I hope that any readers that do follow through with a new plans will post their stories on our facebook page to encourage others (and shame the few that fall by the wayside!) to keep going. Coach Pam is an award-winning business coach with over 30 years experience. Working with her you’ll find you’ll work less, have more money and increase your free time to spend with your family or to just do the things you want to do. A lot of people start their own business and then get bogged down with the day to day running of it. They may be really good at what they do, but spend all their time working in the business, never freeing up time to work on their business. It then gets to the stage where they can’t remember why they started their business in the first place because life is a drudge. Every day is “Groundhog Day.” If this rings true with you then I can help. As a successful business owner myself, I have a passion for sharing my knowledge with business owners like you. I understand the emotional rollercoaster and the trials and tribulations of owning a business. If you feel that you’ve lost heart or you’re just not sure what your next step should be, then please get in touch. Your business should enhance your life, not be your life. If you continue to do the same thing day in, day out, then you can’t expect your business or your life to improve. It’s about taking action and having a fresh look at your business.

5 ways to get more work done during your working day

same reasons, get contacts to come to you, when given the choice. 2 Be more selfish with your time One of the key drawbacks of being the boss is much Most days, life can get pretty hectic while you’re running of your time can get taken up by others asking you for your own small business. Not only can there be a huge direction. Sometimes, of course, there is unavoidable, amount of work to get through, but your average small but constant interruptions will hamper your ability business owner must also be able to ‘wear many hats’ and to get other (often more important) things done. Set take care of a wide range of tasks. With so much to do, aside time when others know you aren’t to be disturbed you have to make every minute must count, so how might unless absolutely necessary. Encourage employees you be able to save time and get more done each day? worthy of your trust to take more responsibility. Tactfully 1 Use ‘to-do’ lists unscheduled visits from suppliers and others – your time Many people swear by them and it can be a great way to really is too precious. If possible, get someone else to prioritise your tasks, remain focused and get everything answer general phone calls, which should only be put done by the required deadline. emails you don’t need to read. If you don’t need a reply to an email you send, sign off to that effect. And, as part of your new ‘digital diet’, unless you use it to market your business, leave visiting social media websites until after hours. 4 Become a better delegator When you have been the person who has set up a business and worked hard to establish and grow it, it can be hard to let others share responsibility for making important decisions. But, where possible, delegate more tasks to others. You need to maximise your value – and that means working more on your business (ie guiding its development), rather than in it (another common mistake among small-business owners). To free up more of your time, if cost-efficient, consider outsourcing certain time-consuming tasks (eg accounting, recruitment or marketing). 5 Keep your work area clean and tidy Having a clean and tidy working environment will make you feel better and could make you more productive, too. If necessary, tidy up. Put everything in a logical place, so you’ll be able to find it more easily.

Could self-driving cars help save the environment?

It’s no secret that cars are one of the environment’s biggest enemies. Accounting for huge amounts of pollution – not only in their emissions but in their manufacture, too – cars are a hot topic in the green conversation. Traditionally, visions for cleaner cars of the future focus on aspects such as green fuel, batteries and charging stations (read our guide to green cars for more on these), but what if the cars of tomorrow were completely different to the ones we know today? What if we didn’t even have to drive them? It seems like the stuff of science fiction, but technology is making real strides with driverless cars. Google has been working on an autonomous vehicle for some time now, and a self-driving system has been designed for Audi’s A7 model, with experts claiming it could be de rigueur by as early as 2016. It all sounds a bit futuristic, but look at it this way: a lot of modern day cars already come with semiautonomous driving features. Drift out of your lane on the motorway and some models will sense it, and nudge the steering wheel back towards to centre. Others take the hassle out of parallel parking with motion sensors and auto-stop features. Cars featuring adaptive cruise control will automatically slow down on approaching another vehicle. A fully autonomous car is the next logical step, and the invention would offer benefits far beyond convenience for passengers; scientists believe such a breakthrough could offer significant environmental plus points. Here’s how: • Less wasted fuel • Better fuel efficiency • Fewer vehicles on the road • Fewer materials for manufacture • Walking and cycling become more attractive

DN14 ‘MOVE OR IMPROVE’ FEATURE

Whether you’re looking to sell your home or you just want to be more appreciative of the space you live in, people are always looking for ways to increase the value of their homes. A lot of people think that they will need to take some kind of drastic action if they’re to succeed in raising the value of their home but this isn’t the case and you can actually successfully increase the value of your property without any real disruption to your life.
The exterior is the first and most basic change that you can make to your home. If someone comes to see your home as a prospective buyer or even if they’re just walking passed it on the street then you’ll want to make a good impression – you won’t want to make a bad impression anyway. Whenever someone looks at the exterior of your home – especially if they’re potential buyers – they’ll be judging whether or not they feel that it’s worth the cost. If you make a good first impression then this will have a good effect on the rest of the viewing because remember no matter how nice your home is inside, if the exterior makes a bad impression on them then they know that it’ll have a negative impact on other people when they come to visit their new home. Rather than losing a sale because of

the way that the exterior of your home looks spend some time on your front garden removing weeds, fixing the gate and if necessary adding a new coat of paint to your front door, fence and window ledges When people first move into their home they’re usually really keen to decorate and put their own personality into the property. However after a few years all decorating will look dull and drab as the paint starts to flake, marks appear on the walls and the style isn’t on trend anymore. If you’re planning to sell your home then fresh paint and colours throughout your home are essential but even if you’re not selling you should still be willing to decorate every now and again in order to rekindle the love that you have for your property.

Decorating and DIY is always a good way to improve your houses value.
If you plan on living in your home for a number of years then it’s essential that you like what you have to look at, not only to keep yourself happy and content but also so that you allow yourself to feel proud whenever people come to visit your home.

Top Tip: Painting your interior doors black will instantly bring a high class, sophisticated look to your home which will have a great impact on visitors.

Budgeting for Christmas….. & afterwards!

DNfourteen DEC 2013 / JAN 2014

It’s almost that time again, and according to a recent article I read, the average UK consumer will spend approximately £480 on Christmas. This is despite the pressure that many families have been feeling in recent years thanks to the rising costs of living. You could reduce the financial stress of “Christmas” by having (and sticking to) a budget, and ideally by putting money aside in advance. It may be a little late for the latter, but by creating a budget now it will make you think about what you are planning to spend this year, but also how to financially plan in advance for next year! The first step is to create a ‘budget’; You can do this on a simple spread sheet, or on one of the many software packages. To begin with, create a new file or document called “Christmas”; this can actually work for other events such as “Holidays”. You should consider using individual sub-categories such as food & drink, gifts, decorations, travel expenses, and so on.

The first year will always be the hardest because you have no information to fall back on, but try and consider everything you think you will spend. As with any budget, it is only as good as the information that is recorded, so you must track everything. Continued on page 46

More Music, More East Yorkshire, More YOU! The countdown to Christmas has officially begun! It's been a busy November as we've been out and about across East Yorkshire turning on Christmas Lights, and officially beginning the countdown to Santa arriving. We've been to Hull City Centre, Cottingham, Newland Avenue, Hessle, Beverley, Hedon, Freedom Centre East Hull, Goole, Bilton and more! If you go to our website at kcfm.co.uk you can see all the photos from each event. See if you can spot yourself! We were also out this November at various bonfire and firework displays. Matt Hutchinson from the KCFM Breakfast Show was at West Park in Goole for their annual bonfire display, along with another ten thousand people! What an amazing night! More photos from the night on the Events page of kcfm.co.uk

Darren Lethem was also at Brantingham Park for their annual fireworks bash. Another fantastic evening with lots of ooooooh’s and aaaaaah’s (even the occasional weeeeee!). Get all the photos on the Events page of kcfm.co.uk

A busy month ahead – let’s hope we get time to squeeze some Christmas shopping in too! Follow us on:

Once Christmas is over, you must refer back to this document and assess the total cost. You may have exceeded your first years budget, or may have over estimated, but either way you need to make some adjustments to the budget for next year. If you overspent, look at the different areas and decide if your budget had been realistic, and try to look at ways to save money. If on the other hand you came out under budget, well done! Don’t forget to also try and take account of inflation for future budgets. It is highly likely that it will cost more next year!

The next step would be to plan ahead. For example if the budget highlights that “Christmas” costs £1000 then you know that to avoid having a £1000 credit bill to pay off after Christmas, you need to try and save around £80pm in a separate bank account between now and next year. What this will do is take the pressure off having to clear credit cards and interest charges. Hopefully by creating a budget now, you will be able to relax and enjoy Christmas even more in future! Have a great Christmas! Shane Beardsley Managing Director and Independent Financial Adviser Kirk Ella Investments Ltd
