Welcome to DNfourteen Hello Readers, Welcome to the October Edition of your DNfourteen Magazine, well it looks like Summer has finally gone!! We have another great magazine for you to read and enjoy this month with topics covering: Health & Beauty, In Safe Hands, October Gardening, Countdown to Christmas (Yes, It’s only twelve weeks away!!!) and the Puzzle Page for you to enjoy whilst relaxing. I find the gardening advice from those nice people at Heritage Landscape Centre is great for me (and judging from my mail, those like me who are not as knowledgable on garden matters) as I feel I can now be productive on a weekend in the garden safe in the knowledge that what I am doing is correct!!! We also have some interesting facts about debt and mo ney issues plus much much more. The Vintage, Retro and Handmade Fair at Beverley Minster on the 18th of October looks like a great day out (it’s free to get in) and will have nearley 100 exhibitors plus music and dance demonstrations. Until next month please take care. Kind regards,

Jane Gough

DNfourteen: Supporting The Local Economy One in 11 people, or 4.5 million British adults, have less than £10 a month left over once they have paid their essential bills, research from thinkmoney has found. With many households struggling to make ends meet, the findings from budgeting account provider thinkmoney reveal the worryingly small amounts of disposable income people have left once they’ve met all their financial commitments. Of the 2,149 people polled, one in four said they had less than £50 a month to spend after bills. Across the UK, the average monthly disposable income was £224.50. However, there was a wide gender difference with men reporting having disposable incomes averaging £272.50, while women saying their income was £190.20.

4

Young people reported having the least

disposable income, with 18-24 year-olds averaging £174.20 – some 22% below the overall UK average. Almost one in three people in this age group have less than £50 a month to spend after bills. By contrast, the wealthiest in terms of postbills spending money are people over 65, with an average of £269.50 a month available to spend. The amount of disposable income also varies depending on where people live. It is highest in London, at an average of £261, and the South East, at £244. People in the North East and Wales have the lowest disposable incomes, at £199 and £181 respectively. Worryingly, one in six people questioned in Wales said they had less than £10 a month to spend after bills. “It’s stressful not knowing if you will have enough money to pay the bills and afford added extras each month,” said Ian Williams, director of communications at thinkmoney.

Do you feel pulled in two directions, between progressing in your career and spending time at home?Any of the above may indicate an imbalance between your work and home life. This may be a temporary or more on-going

situation. We all need a certain amount of pressure in our lives. However, when we are too stressed we are less effective and efficient, leading to less available time and yet more stress. A poor work/ life balance can lead to conflict, anxiety, irritability or depression. So please take time out to relax and listen to your body. Please look at the advertisers in this feature and ask yourself this question: How can they help me? Why not call them to discuss your needs. I am sure they would be delighted to talk through what they do and how it could benefit you. Keep well.

Help & Advice

How to deal with debt Nine million people are suffering mental health problems, like stress and depression, because of debt and other money worries. That’s according to research by the Money Advice Service. Debt can leave you feeling isolated and helpless but there are measures you can take to relieve the pressure. Here are five steps you can take to improve your finances and personal wellbeing. 1. Identify the problem Take time to identify the cause of the problem.

12

You may have mounting debts or concerns about being able to make rental or mortgage payments. This could be the result of a change in your personal circumstances, for example separation from a partner or redundancy. 2. Make a list of all your creditors Work out which debts are the most urgent. Some debts are more pressing than others because the consequences of not paying them can be more serious. You won’t be sent to prison for nonpayment of debts, but you could face a court order so it’s best to take action. 3. Speak to your lender Don’t delay to speak to your creditor such as your bank, credit card company or building society. They may be able to help but can only do so if you talk to them. Your lender could consider freezing any outstanding charges or offer you a Please mention

payment holiday until you are able to get repaying again. Alternatively, they might agree to rearrange your payment schedule, perhaps so you can pay off less each month, but over a longer period. 4. Make a plan Whether your creditor is willing to help or not, you should work out a budget plan so you can get your finances back on track. The Money Advice Service has a tool which can help. If you can’t see a way to pay off what you owe, speak to a specialist debt adviser, who will be able to help you work out the best thing to do in your situation. Let your creditors know that you are getting advice and will be in touch with them as soon as you’ve found the best solution. 5. Where to get help You could seek confidential, independent and free debt advice from organisations such as Citizens Advice, National Debtline and StepChange Debt Charity. They can also provide free debt management plans. If you are concerned that debt worries are causing a detrimental effect to your health, you should speak to your doctor without delay.

12 Weeks to go!

‘Countdown to Christmas’ Can you believe it? We are now only twelve weeks away from Christmas! Time certainly passes quicker the older you get!

So down to business, we start our annual countdown to Christmas this month which runs for the next 12 weeks and gives local businesses the opportunity to showcase the products and services that would make Christmas a better time for you and your loved ones Plan for affordability not desirability Too many list every lusted-for item, gifts for all, and a corking meal, then only afterwards consider: “How will I pay for it? ” That’s a recipe to be broke.

15 Instead, calculate your budget and ask: “What can I afford to spend on Christmas?” Christmas is one day - don’t ruin the whole of the new year for it. Pay by credit card if it’s over £100 Sadly, firms go bust. If that happens and ordered goods haven’t arrived, or have but are faulty, it’s a nightmare. However, Section 75 laws mean if you use a credit card (not debit card, cheque or cash) to pay even partly for something costing between £100 and £30,000, the card company’s jointly liable for the whole amount. If the firm goes bust, you can get redress from the card firm instead – valuable extra protection. Though only

Countdown to Christmas If the goods don’t appear or are faulty, you can ask your bank/card provider to reclaim the cash from the seller’s bank, so long as you start the chargeback process within 120 days of realising there’s a problem.

do this if you can clear the card in full each month to avoid interest.

16

Be wary when buying gift cards If you’re considering giving gift cards or vouchers there are three key things you should be aware of: Sometimes retailers go bust. A host of big-name retailers have gone into administration in recent years. When this happens, they usually stop accepting cards altogether.

Section 75 doesn’t apply to purchases under £100, but there’s still an option Gift cards have expiry dates. Most which can help if you use a Visa, Mastercard or Amex credit card, or any gift cards must be redeemed within a certain period of time, so the recipient debit or charge card.

Countdown to Christmas needs to spend them before time runs out. They could forget or lose them. Often people forget to use them, lose them or accidentally run them through the wash. However you spend your money and what you spend it on this Christmas is ultimately down to you. All we would say is, “please bear in mind the local economy and do buy from the advertisers and shops and suppliers based within the DN14 postcode area whenever possible.” The businesses in the area do appreciate your custom and to a larger degree rely on it to keep on trading. Happy Shopping :-)

Countdown to Christmas

A Christmas Joke

One evening, in a busy hotel bar in London, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer walked in the door, bellied up to the bar and ordered a Martini. Without batting an eye, the bartender mixed and poured the drink, set it in front of Rudolph, and accepted the twenty pound note from his hoof. As he handed Rudolph some coins in change, he said, “You know, I think you’re the first Reindeer I’ve ever seen in here.”

18

Rudolph looked hard at the hoofful of change and said, “Hmmmpf. Let me tell you something, buddy. At these prices, I’m the last reindeer you’ll see in here.”

Gardening

October Gardening New lawns October is the last chance for sowing grass seed and just about the best time for laying turf. Good preparation is vital for either: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture. Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Butt the turves together as tightly as you can and fill any gaps with sieved soil. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks.

20

Perennials Plant new ones - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant hardy perennials so their roots have a chance to become established before winter and do ensure you choose plants that are appropriate for your soil type! Divide large ones such as daylilies and peonies once they have finished flowering. Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of organic matter and water generously. Remember some perennials, such as peonies, do not take kindly to being disturbed so tread carefully! Late flowering perennials such as asters are best left until spring for dividing. Cut back those that have died down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring.

Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre

you have collected is fantastically rewarding, but be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry. Protect alpines from the wet and clear leaves from around them - leaves left around alpines will encourage disease, so clear dead leaves regularly. Whilst alpines, not surprisingly, don’t mind the cold, they do object to excessive wetness, so you may need to put an open ended cloche or something similar over your plants if you have a particularly wet spell of weather. Pots, containers and hanging baskets Be ruthless and turf out summer bedding even if it is still looking good - this will give winter and spring bedding a chance to get roots well down whilst there is still some warmth in the soil. Pansies are more likely to flower through the winter if they are well established before winter temperatures slow them down.

Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots, containers and hanging baskets now. Winter colour comes in all shapes and sizes; hardy cyclamen and heathers, dwarf conifers, variegated box, winter Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts pansies, violas and trailing ivies all make wonderful cause any damage. displays. Stop feeding permanent plants and move any tender plants under cover before the cold sets in (if possible allow them to dry out partially before lifting them). It’s important to lift containers that will be left outside over the winter onto pot feet - both for good drainage and to protect against frost damage.

Winter and spring flowering bedding Replace summer bedding with winter and spring bedding. Plant out violas, wallflowers and primulas now for cheery colour in the coming months (‘minicyclamen’ too if you are somewhere relatively mild - bear in mind that unlike hardy cyclamen, which are different people altogether, they do not like heavy frost). Clear old summer bedding, incorporate some organic matter into the soil and plant the newcomers in drifts for stunning effect. Remember not to grow wallflowers and ornamental cabbages in the same spot two year running; they are brassicas and need rotation to avoid the root disease ‘clubfoot’, which is not only infectious, but persists in the soil.

‘In Safe Hands’ FEATURE This month we feature the professionals that are in business to care and provide for all our physical, emotional and spiritual needs and much more. ‘In Safe Hands’ is all about the provision that is available to us from cradle to grave to ensure that we as individuals not only look after ourselves but also those that are close to us too. We have a vast range of advertisers offering everything from Hypnotherapy to Carpet Cleaning and Funeral Care to Dentistry and Tradesmen of various professions. All of these individuals and companies know that they survive on reputation and repeat business. It is therefore paramount that they not only offer professional services but actually deliver what they say. After much research and enquiry we feel confidant that we can boast that they are all the best at what they do in this DN14 postcode area. Please don’t be afraid to contact these advertisers to ask for references and testimonials from their

39 existing clients, they will only be too happy to accomodate you with this information. Also please feel free to call them up to discuss any issues, fears or reservations that you may have about their particular area of expertise. They will be most accomodating in talking things through with you so that you feel totally comfortable with them and also them with you. Speaking with these advertisers it was quite apparent that they expect to spend a certain portion of time talking things through with prospective new clients. So please don’t feel foolish or ignorant if you are not clear about anything please contact the person concerned they will give you honest answers and refer you to the appropriate service or professional if they are not the right avenue for your particular need. So please rest assured you are ‘In Safe Hands’. all that remains for me to say is please look after yourselves and your families and be healthy.

FIONA’S WORD

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

Goole Poetry I recently found this beautiful poem online and wanted to share it with you all. A Prospect of Goole By Philip Gross A flock of blue gantries is suddenly there in the flatland, like wading birds drawn down the wind from the north. 46 They all face one way, calm as hieroglyphics, with foreknowledge of an estuary so far denied me. Sea into fields, sky seen through girders, trade routes into heartland, inter-penetrations everywhere – miles between me and Drax, whose cloud-capped cooling towers forge endlessly inland, steam unravelling east and away behind them, like this train that feels emptier stop by stop, filling with distance, that I vanish in whichever way I turn. I could be getting somewhere.
