Humane Society International UK Urges DEFRA to Extend Badger Vaccination Scheme to Offer Farmers An Effective, Humane Alternative to Shooting Badgers

“But more than that, it needs to promote badger vaccination in the high-risk areas where it will actually make the greatest difference. Refusing to support vaccination in precisely those areas where bovine TB is most problematic is nonsensical. So farmers in these areas deserve a vaccination scheme or they’re being left high and dry. We know that indiscriminate With this year’s badger cull rumoured to start in the coming culling of badgers won’t be effective. Last year’s cull was a weeks, Humane Society International UK is urging DEFRA to waste of time, money and badgers’ lives that DEFRA seems expand its limited Badger Edge Vaccination Funding Scheme to sadly determined to repeat this year. Unlike the cull, science high-risk areas in order to offer farmers a genuinely effective, tells us that vaccinating even a modest proportion of badgers humane and science-led alternative to culling. undoubtedly reduces the potential for TB to spread within badger populations and therefore back to cattle.” When this year’s badger cull begins in Somerset and Gloucestershire, shooters will once again be allowed to trap HSI UK also believes that DEFRA’s edge area scheme risks badgers for up to 16 hours before killing them, or target failing to gain sufficient uptake from volunteer groups ‘free running’ badgers at night, despite the Independent that are motivated by actions that will be prevent culling. Expert Panel concluding that free Vaccinating badgers in edge areas shooting was both ineffective and where culling was never due inhumane. Last autumn more than to happen in the first place will 1,800 badgers were slaughtered, prove a far harder sell to wildlife with nearly a quarter taking more volunteers. than five minutes to die. “Bovine TB is a problem created The Chair of Natural England’s by the farming industry,” said Scientific Advisory Committee Jones. “So it’s time for farmers described the culls as an “epic to take ownership of effective failure”, and the vast majority and humane solutions to their of independent scientists agree that a cull can make no problem, instead of indiscriminately shooting badgers and by meaningful contribution to controlling TB in cattle. doing so potentially making the problem worse. Improving farm biosecurity and restricting cattle movements are By contrast, badger vaccination using the injectable BCG vaccine is a viable alternative, and DEFRA is promoting public crucial, but badger vaccination is also a very useful tool, so funding for vaccination projects in the ‘edge’ area bordering we encourage landowners and farmers to get proactively the region worst affected by bovine TB in England. However, involved and push DEFRA to expand its funding to include HSI UK warns that unless the scheme is available in ‘high risk’ high risk areas. All stakeholders – farmers, the tax payer bTB areas, and until DEFRA and the NFU actively counter their and wildlife groups – have much to gain from a badger own anti-vaccination rhetoric, the scheme will have limited vaccination initiative, but it needs to be done intelligently otherwise all those same stakeholders will lose out.” impact. Mark Jones, veterinarian and executive director of HSI UK, said: “We’re pleased that DEFRA has finally admitted that badger vaccination is a useful tool, but it will be too little too late unless ministers pull out all the stops to promote it to the very farmers they and the National Farmers Union have spent years trying to convince that badger vaccination is a waste of time. Ministers have downplayed the value of badger vaccination in recent years, in an attempt to boost support for a cull, and that negative messaging risks undermining the scheme even before it has begun. If DEFRA now wants to get buy-in from those same farmers for vaccination of badgers on their land, it needs to seriously change its rhetoric.
As recently as 30 June 2014, former DEFRA Minister Owen Paterson was quoted as saying: “We have tried vaccinations, but there is just not a vaccine for tuberculosis that works on badgers”. On 7 August on BBC Points West, Jan Rowe a pro-cull beef farmer and director of the Gloscon company set up to run the Gloucestershire pilot cull, said of badger vaccination ‘we have no evidence that it’s doing any great benefit’ and that we are ‘wasting our money’. Prior to the 2013 cull, many farmers were also told by NFU and DEFRA representatives at local meetings that badger vaccination wouldn’t work and that if they chose it, they ‘were on their own’.

Top Ten Wedding-Planning Tips from recent Newlyweds You’re a planning bride: You’re constantly looking at top wedding blogs, pinning has become your second job, and your wedding coordinator is on speed dial (or, if you don’t have one, then you feel like you’re ready to become one). But you can never fully anticipate the wedding day until (gulp) it’s finally here.

Autumn Weddings best moments were ones we didn’t plan for at all—like a fabulous photograph of my dress train all tangled up with leaves and dirt. Sure, it was messy and not what you’re used to seeing in bridal magazines, but it was also honest and a truly joyful moment that could easily have gone south if we’d been uptight about things. Embrace the unexpected, and each others’ opinions, and don’t let an unattainable ideal sour the big picture: You’re in this together, now and for the future.” - Teresa and Ben 5. Have Faith That All Of Your Efforts Will Be Worth It. “Before my wedding, I remember my sister telling me that her wedding day was the BEST day of her life, and she was so excited that I would soon be able to experience mine. When I was in the midst of planning my wedding, the long, daily to-do lists and the stress made me feel as if that day would never come. However, it eventually did! When it came, I tried my best to savour every moment of the wedding day—from the moment I got out of bed to the moment I walked out of my village church as a married
woman— and I’d advise brides and grooms out there to do the same.” - Jodie and Daniel 6. Share Something Personal And Unique. “Reading from The Lovely Love Story was the best decision we made for our wedding! Our guests couldn’t stop talking about how adorable and memorable it was, and we still get a bunch of guests sharing random dinosaur posts on our Facebook walls. We also ended up getting amazing wedding films, since it gave the cinematographers something really emotional to connect all of the pieces together. Cinematographers are storytellers, so having a unifying element to drive your love story will truly leave lasting impression in your wedding films.” - Lisa and Jonathan 7. Remember to take a few minutes alone with your husband or wife. We wanted people to walk away saying, ‘That was so much fun.’ And we were able to accomplish that. 8 Foods Worth Eating Daily
It feels like everyday there’s a new report on the latest fad food we should be eating. Let’s face it, if we tried to eat all the food that magazines, talk shows, books, news programs, and “experts” tell us we need, we would be eating sun up to sun down. May sound fun in theory, but to practice it’s pretty darn hard. So what should we eat? Fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein, and if you’re looking for specifics, here’s a list of the foods we here at DNfourteen Mag try to eat every day.
12
Berries Why: Berries are a great source of fibre, which most people do not get enough of. Most berries are a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants, which protect your body against inflammation and free radical damage. How: Berries are tasty on their own, tossed in salads, in smoothies, or mixed in cereals or yogurt. If you’re feeling really daring, try this Salmon with Blueberry Balsamic Sauce! Eggs Why: No offense to carrots, but we should be eating eggs to protect our eyes. The lutein and zeaxanthin found in egg yolks have been shown to

Health & Wellbeing This month ‘Theo and Florence Seasonal Vegetable Boxes’ will celebrate their 1st anniversary. We join them to discuss their success so far. “This is a very exciting time for us” explains Emma Lattimore. “The vegetable boxes are a relatively new idea, but the growing of great tasting vegetables is what my family have done in Rawcliffe for many generations. We believe we bring the farm shop to the customer’s door, providing a quality product at a competitive price”. So what’s the concept? Usually 8 varieties, most of which are picked from the farm and delivered on the same day, guaranteeing freshness. Content changes with the season, and with farmer Patrick Sykes’ passion for unusual varieties growing by the day, this autumn the squash and pumpkin season is set to be better than ever! “Patrick and the rest of the team have worked extremely hard to produce a wide range of vegetables that appeal to both traditional and experimental cooks, the feedback has been great and we hope that we can continue to make our customers happy”.

They’re a great source of high quality protein and, contrary to popular belief, they don’t make your cholesterol shoot through the roof. How: Traditional egg breakfasts such as scrambles and omelettes are great, but eggs can also be added to oatmeal to amp up the protein. Gardening
September Gardening The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?
20
Watering Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine. Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year. If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose!
Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre weed and clean - green algae can be toxic to pets. Weeding Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth. Bulbs, flowers and containers: Plant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus. Always use the side bulbs of tulips and daffodils as they make perfectly good bulbs in their own right. Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas. Put poinsettias in the dark for 14 hours a day and full light for the remaining 10 hours to encourage the formation of those cheery festive red bracts. Birds Birds need fresh water for bathing and drinking, especially during hot and dry spells, so keep supplies plentiful and regularly changed. Throw out mouldy food on bird tables and remember that birds cannot digest milk - it can kill them.
If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily. Keep your pond topped up, free of pond Please mention

VAT and Prompt Payment Discounts Businesses which currently offer prompt payment discounts (PPD) to their customers need to be aware that there are some changes ahead to the rules. Currently under UK law VAT is payable on the net amount after deducting the discount, whether or not the customer takes advantage of the PPD and pays promptly. For example if you sell some goods for £1,000 plus VAT and offer 5% discount if the customer pays within 10 days then VAT is charged at 20% on £950 being £190, rather than 20% of £1,000 which is £200. Even if the customer takes 30 days to pay and therefore does not qualify for the PPD, the amount due will be £1,190.
40
This rule regarding PPD is in the process of being changed and from 1 April 2015 VAT will be due on the amount the customer actually pays. So using the above example if the customer fails to take advantage of the PPD he would need to pay the full £1,000 plus VAT of £200. The business making the supply will have to issue a credit note to account for the PPD where this is taken up. So using the same example if the customer takes up the discount then the credit note would be for £50 plus £10 VAT. Apparently PPD have been widely used by suppliers of telecommunications and broadcasting services and so the use of PPD to reduce VAT due has already been blocked in those sectors from 1 May 2014. This applies where the customer cannot recover the VAT charged. If your business currently offers PPD you may need to change your invoicing procedures from 1 April 2015 and the Government are going to consult on the implementation of the change. Please mention

Goldsmith to Websmith Daniel Read of Straylite Design talks to DNfourteen about his company.
Q: How long has Straylite Design been around? A: I’ve been building websites as a part time thing for about 3 years now but I created Straylite Design as a business at the beginning of 2014. Q: What got you started?
42
A: I was tasked with commissioning a website by my former employer in 2011 so I approached a few professional web design companies and got some quotes which were a lot more than I had anticipated. I settled on a company, gave them the job and waited… and waited. About 4 months later they got back to me with a standard template, I think it was for a coffee shop, with our logo stuck on it. Q: So you did it yourself?
Q: How important do you think it is for businesses to have a website these days? A: Well, it depends on the business or organisation and what it does. I think that there is a huge misconception of websites, many clients contact me for some advice about commissioning a website and the assumption is that websites are this kind of golden goose that generates interest for a business. I have to be very careful not to mis-sell or over sell what I offer because there are plenty of unscrupulous companies who do that, take the money and run.
A: Yeah, I discovered that this big, professional company, like lots of web design outfits, were actually out-sourcing the work to the far east and were basically putting your details into an existing template. That’s fine but my employer and I wanted something bespoke. I went back to my employer and explained the situation I consider a website to be an extension of and that I could look into building it myself. an existing advertising campaign. What people don’t realise is that a freelance Q: …and how did that go? web designer like me who doesn’t share the same overheads as many web design A: I started slow and simple. The actual businesses can produce a professional, website has been through loads of reinventions as I have learned and applied the tailored website for about the same cost as a single local newspaper advertisement. The principles involved but both my employer difference is that a local press ad lasts as and I were very satisfied with the result. It was a true reflection of the business and was long as a printing cycle where as a website, fully integrated and referenced on Google, completely managed in-house by us. Please mention

Finally, building a website is worth nothing without a flair for design. Have you ever noticed how lots of websites look the same? Q: What makes Straylite Design different That’s because many, many web design companies exclusively use templates to from other web design solutions, why build their sites. I design and build the should people choose you? vast majority of Straylite websites by hand, A: All Straylite websites are designed and from the ground up. I do offer entry-level built in-house by me which means the template websites for very small businesses customer has a definite point of contact, this or sole traders but even these templates also cuts the lead time drastically as I am were custom built by me. not out-sourcing to a third party. Q: Finally, do you have anything else you’d Something I’m very aware of is that real like to say to any potential clients? people find it frustrating dealing with A: Yeah. Anyone who is considering nerdy, techy types as they tend to to be commissioning a website should get in awkward and poor communicators. I am touch. I can give some down-to-earth a fully trained mechanical engineer, I’ve worked on a service desk, in the journalism advice about their requirements and what to industry and I’m an alumni of the National expect from a website, completely free and Association of Goldsmiths. The wide scope without any obligation. of my professional background leaves me fully equipped to communicate clearly with For more information please contact Daniel at: info@straylitedesign.co.uk people in the real world. FIONA’S WORD
By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.
BACK TO SCHOOL!
46
What already?!! Where did the 6 weeks go? They always loom up in front of us, endlessly stretching before us as we wonder how we’re going to manage the holidays - and then, before we know it, we’re looking over our shoulders wondering where the summer went. Now, we can just go back to juggling work, home and afterschool activities instead of feeling guilty about enrolling the children in summer activities! But while parenting may feel like we’ve got too many balls in the air all at once, I don’t think there’s a single one of us who doesn’t love it. There’s just something wonderful about having children, the things they do that make you laugh and the things they say that are often so profound! And we have to remember all of those when they drive us crazy!
LOOM CRAZY!
Talking of being crazy, it seems to me that loom bands came out of nowhere and I can’t see the craze dying out anytime soon. I had never heard of them and then, just a month or so before the summer holidays, everyone suddenly became obsessed by them. Even the Royals and other celebrities are getting in on the act. Prince William and Kate have been spotted wearing them, as have the likes of David Beckham and the One Direction lads. I, of course, have my own collection courtesy of my children – in a variety of colours to match whatever I happen to be wearing! I think they’re pretty great, don’t you? They’re so creative and it’s a complete distraction from “screen” time, except, of course, when they watch youtube videos to find out how to perfect new designs! Well, we can’t do without technology entirely, can we?!!
