Help into Work Event Success Goole MP, Andrew Percy, recently hosted a careers event at Goole College which attracted over 350 attendees and provided an important opportunity for jobseekers to see the range of options available locally. The companies exhibiting included Siemens, Lagan Construction, Caremark and Tesco, and enabled jobseekers to speak direct to these employers. On top of this, Andrew has also welcomed the latest jobs figures from Goole Job Centre which show the unemployed claimant count locally decrease by one hundred in the last year and youth unemployment fall 34% in the same period.

4

Andrew says: “I’m proud to have hosted a number events locally aimed at connecting jobseekers with local employers and providing opportunities to improve skills through mock interviews and CV workshops. This this the third large event I’ve held in Goole and whilst the focus of this event was on skills, I was pleased to see that a number of employers had real job opportunities on offer, with some people actually being recruited on the day! “It is great news to see unemployment and youth unemployment claimant figures continue to fall in our area. These figures show our welfare reforms and long term economic plan are getting Britain working. There is still more to be done though.” Andrew Percy MP 83 Pasture Road, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, DN14 6BP Tel: 01405 767969 Email: brigg.goole@gmail.com To contact

Everybody loves a great wedding and it is every girls dream day so we have put together some little words of advice as well as the best wedding suppliers in the East Yorkshire area to help you realise your dreams. It’s NOT all about the perfect wedding Too many work through a wanna-have list – a film star dress, flowing champagne, platinum rings, a five-star honeymoon. Only then, they ask how they’ll pay for it. One disgruntled father told us: “I asked my daughter what her budget was. She asked me, ‘Dad, how can I work out my budget until I know what I want?’” So, instead, ask “what can we afford to spend on our wedding?” Then work out how to have the best do possible within that budget. A picnic in a park with close friends can be just as magical as a blingy bash for 300. Play the wedding prioritisation game Once you know your budget, the aim’s to work out how much you can actually afford to spend on different areas Please mention

‘Winter Motoring’ FEATURE Keeping your vehicle well maintained is important all year round, but doubly so in winter. For example, worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with with a good, deep tread.

Car Battery - Remember, if your car has not been used for a period of time, the battery may need charging before you come to use it (see page 8 for an in depth look at this problem).

Make sure all exterior lights are working correctly and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. And, don’t leave home on that long trip over lonely country roads without enough fuel for the journey.

Coolant - ensure that coolant is between the minimum and maximum markers. It is also important that there is sufficient antifreeze in the coolant. If you’re uncertain, have a look at your handbook or get a local garage to check the strength. Antifreeze is cheap but damage from a frozen engine can be very expensive to put right.

The following five checks will help ensure your vehicle is ready for winter: Note: Before carrying out these checks, make sure your vehicle is cold and parked on a flat, level surface. If unsure about your vehicle please contact the garages in this feature who are all there to help you.

Tyres - check tyre condition to see if there is adequate tread. Look for damage such as splits or bulges and check the pressure. If you live in an area particulary at risk of snow consider purchasing winter tyres or snow socks which give you greater traction and control.

7

Motoring Screenwash - make sure you have enough screenwash and that the concentration is suitable for cold conditions. Not all screenwash is the same so look for the temperature it protects down to. You should be looking for protection down to down to -10 degrees C and if you live in areas subject to the greatest extremes of weather, down to -20 degrees C. If you don’t use a good quality screenwash there is a danger your washer pump could freeze which might lead to the fuse charging your battery at least once a week blowing and your wipers not working during the winter months, particularly if it because they are often on the same fuse. is more than three years old. Wiper blades - check wiper blades for damage and replace if necessary. When wiper blades become frozen to glass it is very easy to damage them when freeing them up.

8

When the temperature drops and your car won’t start it’s more often than not an issue with your car battery. Cold, damp weather can play havoc on batteries as vehicle electrical systems have to work a lot harder at this time of year and starter motors require all the current they can get to start the engine on these cold mornings. With more and more vehicle equipment demanding electricity this is more of a problem than ever. We recommend checking and, if needs be,

To contact

Cold temperatures affect the chemical process inside the battery that produces and stores electricity, effectively slowing it down and reducing the battery’s ability to hold the charge. Older, weaker batteries will typically already have reduced performance and cold temperatures will often drastically reduce this further, to the point where the battery will discharge or go flat very quickly. Remember to: Switch off all loads including lights, wipers, heater etc before switching off your engine at the end of your journey This prevents any unnecessary drain on the battery the next time you start up. Check that everything is switched off before turning the ignition on.

please Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • Telephone: 01964 552 470

Motoring Avoid using heaters, heated screens and heated seats for longer than you have to as they all put high demands on the vehicle’s battery. Some satnavs, in-car DVD players and iPods can also drain the battery if left connected. Check that there are no interior lights, including boot lights, left on or any accessories such as phone chargers left connected. Park your vehicle in a garage whenever possible. Get your battery tested, particularly if it is over three years old And, sometimes it can be difficult just getting into your car. These two tips could save you some much-needed time: Use a little silicone-based furniture polish on the rubber door seals – it helps prevent doors getting stuck when it freezes. It’s best to apply with a cloth so you don’t spray polish on to the vehicle’s paintwork. If locks are frozen, try warming your key. You could also inject the lock with the appropriate anti-freeze or spray it with WD40.

Remembrance Day

Daddy’s Little Girl

10

Her hair was up in a pony tail, Her favourite dress tied with a bow. Today was Father’s Day at school, And she couldn’t wait to go.

One by one the teacher called A student from the class. To introduce their daddy, As seconds slowly passed.

But her mother tried to tell her, That she probably should stay home. Why the kids might not understand, If she went to school alone.

At last the teacher called her name, Every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, A man who wasn’t there.

But she was not afraid; She knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates Of why he wasn’t there today.

“Where’s her daddy?” She heard a boy call out. “She probably doesn’t have one,” Another student dared to shout.

But still her mother worried, For her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, She tried to keep her daughter home.

And from somewhere near the back, She heard a daddy say, “Looks like another deadbeat dad, Too busy to waste his day.”

But the little girl went to school, Eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees, A dad who never calls.

The words did not offend her, As she smiled up at her Mum. And looked back at her teacher, Who told her to go on.

There were daddies along the wall in back, For everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, Anxious in their seats.

And with hands behind her back, Slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, Came words incredibly unique.

Lest We Forget ‘My Daddy couldn’t be here, Because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, Since this is such a special day.

‘I love my Daddy very much, He’s my shining star. And if he could, he’d be here, But heaven’s just too far.

And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know. All about my Daddy, And how much he loves me so.

You see he is a British soldier, And died just this past year. When a roadside bomb hit his convoy And taught Britons to fear.

He loved to tell me stories He taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, And taught me to fly a kite.

But sometimes when I close my eyes, It’s like he never went away.’ And then she closed her eyes, And saw him there that day.

We used to share fudge sundaes, And ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him. I’m not standing here alone.

And to her mother’s amazement, She witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, All starting to close their eyes.

Because my Daddy’s always with me, Even though we are apart I know because he told me, He’ll forever be in my heart.

Who knows what they saw before them, Who knows what they felt inside? Perhaps for merely a second, They saw him at her side.

With that, her little hand reached up, And lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat, Beneath her favourite dress.

‘I know you’re with me Daddy,’ To the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers, Of those once filled with doubt.

And from somewhere here in the crowd of dads, Her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, Who was wise beyond her years.

Not one in that room could explain it, For each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, Was a fragrant long-stemmed rose.

For she stood up for the love Of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, Doing what was right.

And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, By the love of her shining star. And given the gift of believing, That heaven is never too far.

And when she dropped her hand back down, Staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, But its message clear and loud.

Reflections on Cornucopia 2014 As the last few things are being cleared from the site, it’s time to reflect on this year’s festival and look forward to next year. Having moved the festival three times since it began in began in 2012, we have found our home now. Burton Constable Hall is the perfect place for us to develop as a festival. During the weekend we staged over 50 bands and musicians on 4 stages. Judging by the feedback we are receiving everyone liked the mix of international, national and local artists. It is satisfying to hear everyone enjoyed the atmosphere; this is something we are very passionate about. We have created areas within the festival which have their own identity and we hope will now continue to develop. • The Chill tent has been a huge success and the story telling, poetry, comedy and theatre has added many new levels to the festival.

all adding to colourful mayhem within the square. • The stable courtyards have added a whole new dimension to the festival – around the fringes we have been able to add an art exhibition, Debi Keable’s light installation fitted so well into the buildings. The pop up cinema was also a wonderful new addition. Saturday evening showed the true potential of the courtyards, they were buzzing with crowds of people soaking up the wonderful atmosphere, listening to buskers performing anything from jazz to classical violin. • The main venue in the old riding school is the centre of the festival; we can now offer a major venue with top spec production, the perfect place to showcase major artists. COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS Well, Christmas is fast approaching and we hope to bring you lots of great and original ideas for presents in our Countdown to Christmas feature that we are running from now until the December issue. We all know it’s difficult to buy presents, but who is best? Men or Women? Research reveals that men are just as likely to be presented with unwanted gifts such as hair dye, male make-up and car vacuums, with 10% of men polled saying they will sell unwanted gifts on e-Bay. Women are not perfect present buyers either. They make exactly the same mistakes as men. Research is the simple knack to buying great gifts. Think about things your partner buys for his or herself, as well as their personal style, hobbies and interests. If you pay attention, it becomes obvious. Guessing causes the problems, and choosing gifts just because you like them is a no-no. Your own taste is irrelevant. Ask friends and family for hints and advice. In a recession, spending money on an appropriate and appreciated present is a sound financial transaction. The handbag your partner has been dreaming about for months, or a

rare graphic novel by his favourite artist, is the way to go. In this climate, there’s an argument for buying people things they need, as opposed to things they want. Treats like a side of salmon or bottle of champagne may work well for friends or family. Unless someone expressly asks for it, kitchen or household equipment is best avoided. Asking someone outright what they want is a “last resort”. Remember getting a gift wrong leaves both you and the recipient in an awkward position. Getting it right on the other hand, and knowing how delighted your loved ones are with the gifts you’ve chosen, is a fabulous feeling. Just check out the feature in the magazine we have some fantastic shops and businesses right here on our doorstep offering a multitude of gifts that will keep the whole family happy this Christmas. Please mention the DNfourteen Magazine when you are buying from our advertisers they need to know that their advertising is working. Happy and successful shopping!

So there’s good reason for retailers to crank out the Christmas ads, even though there are still more than two months until it’s time to rip that wrap off those presents. Two thirds of shoppers readily admit to being influenced by Christmas TV adverts -- vastly more than any other advertising medium, Shoppercentric found. There’s nothing new about Christmas “coming early”. Back in November 1885, a South Carolina-based retailer issued an advert telling readers that “we are now ALL READY to show you the finest assortment ever exhibited for our NEW STOCK of Beautiful Holiday Goods.” Less than 30 years later, the start of the Christmas advertising season had moved forward several weeks. On 28 October 1912, The Daily Telegraph ran an advert seemingly advertising its own Christmas ads.

In October 1954, at the National Chamber of Trade conference, British shopkeepers approved a resolution decrying “the tendency to introduce Father Christmas too early in the season.”

Countdown to Christmas Christmas sales in the UK, which cover the six week period from mid-November to the end of the year, are a £70bnplus industry. If retailers want to turn that ad impact into real spending, however, they should make sure their staff don’t look too festive. Shoppercentric’s survey of 1,000 UK shoppers found that although more than half of respondents said they like to see festive window displays and Christmas decorations in store, 61pc said they are put off shopping by the sight of staff in Santa hats.

In the UK, TV ads from retailers such as John Lewis and M&S have gained iconic status in the run-up to Christmas. With 65pc of shoppers admitting that Christmas TV ads are effective - compared to around a quarter of people who say that they are influenced by retailers’ own magazines, promotional leaflets and newspaper/ magazine adverts, and social media having even less of an impact - it’s no surprise that retail companies are keen to get their ads on telly screens as soon as possible.

Where have all the starlings gone? You might see big flocks of starlings in your garden at some times of year, but only a few at other times. Ever wondered why?

discouraged from buildings. While UK starlings are resident, northern European birds migrate here for winter.

Starlings are sociable and gregarious birds. During autumn and winter, they gather in communal night-time roosts in places such as reedbeds and on buildings. They spend the day feeding in smaller flocks but as dusk approaches, they fly to these communal roosts. Several thousand birds or even hundreds of thousands of starlings make spectacular scenes whirling around above the roost site. New flocks arrive from all directions all the time, before all the birds finally fly down to roost still chattering away to each other.

26

The sudden disappearance of starlings from an area in winter could be caused by a major roost site becoming unavailable to the birds. This forces them to relocate, resulting in the abandonment of some feeding areas. This is often the case in cities, where they are actively

In addition to the UK breeding population being red-listed, starling numbers are declining across much of Europe, and we are getting fewer migrants than we did a few years ago. As a result, many winter roosts are now much smaller than in the past. The disappearance of starling flocks in spring is a part of the natural cycle. By February, our resident starlings start to move back to their breeding areas and form pairs, breaking away from the winter flocks. Soon after, those that have come to the UK for winter start their migration back north. The same happens with finches, tits and other flocking species as their flocks break up at the start of the breeding season and they pair up.

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO SEE PETER GABRIEL

Peter Gabriel is set to perform his iconic album ‘So’ in its entirety at Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Sunday 30th November

Following the phenomenal response to the recent ‘Back to Front’ tour dates, the latest honoured musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Peter Gabriel, has confirmed a further series of ‘Back to Front’ arena shows in the UK. He will be stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Sunday 30th November. It is testament to the enduring appeal of Gabriel’s 1986 album that the ‘Back to Front’ tour has caught the public imagination so strongly once again. The new shows will continue to feature the original ‘So’ live band (bass-wizard Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Manu Katche) and span Gabriel’s illustrious career, including ‘So’ in its entirety.

“We serve it up in three parts; like a meal. The starter will be an acoustic bit, almost like we would be in rehearsal mode. From that acoustic starter we move on to the savoury dish, which is electric or more electronic stuff. If you survive that, then you get your dessert, which is the complete and uninterrupted album of ‘So,’ in the order in which it was originally intended”. - Peter Gabriel As well as celebrating the ‘So’ album the tour has also been an opportunity for Peter to play some new material live for the first time. Tracks like ‘Daddy Long Legs’ and ‘Show Yourself ’ both featured regularly during the 2013 tour to fantastic audience reactions.

FIONA’S WORD

By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU GIVE YOUR CHILDREN FOR BREAKFAST?

46

I was shocked recently during a trip to the supermarket to discover exactly how much sugar goes into certain children’s breakfast cereals. Now, there are already quite a few that are on my “Absolutely No!” list, but my daughter asked for a particular brand we’d not tried before – and I’m horrified to say that over 80% of it was pure sugar! Of course, reasoning that out with a 7 year old in the middle of a shop isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but what else could I do but refuse? Why on earth are the manufacturers of these cereals allowed to target children in this way? Isn’t it irresponsible? Every other day we hear stories about child obesity problems, an increase in tooth decay in primary school children, behavioural problems brought on by a poor diet and so on. Is it any wonder?

BUYING FOR CHRISTMAS – WHAT ALREADY?!!

I always remember a friend of mine from secondary school who was particularly organised when it came to Christmas. We were only in our first year and she had bought and wrapped all her presents by the end of October! I couldn’t believe it then and I still struggle with it now. And I know she’s not the only one. I hear mothers in the playground who are “pretty much sorted” and only have a few of the “bigger things” to get. What – already? I think I’m probably a bit envious that they have everything so planned out. But while I do try to get a few things in November, especially because it helps spread the cost out, there’s something I rather like about shopping just before Christmas, looking for just the right present for someone – and often it’s something you happen upon unexpectedly and realise it’s perfect!
