Postbox Refurbishment Andrew has welcomed confirmation that the Royal Mail will begin their programme of postbox refurbishment across the DN14 postcode next month, with ones in Old Goole scheduled to be some of the first to be painted.
4
Andrew says, “I have been working closely with residents across our local area on campaigns to help improve their local community and I recently joined East Riding Council and their Environmental Enforcement Team for a visit to various sites in Old Goole.
To contact
“This visit was all part of an effort to help improve the appearance of local areas and we discussed what can be done on a range of issues; such as weed spraying, organising litter collections, having postboxes repainted and more. “I know how hard many local residents work to keep up the appearance of their towns and villages, so I welcome the Royal Mail’s commitment to helping with this.”

Taking audiences to the edge of our current understanding about the origin and evolution of the Universe, the acclaimed physicist offers a fascinating insight into the workings of nature at the most fundamental level. Whether an avid science reader or a total novice, PROFESSOR BRIAN COX LIVE makes challenging ideas accessible to all, exploring the vast, possibly infinite universe and our place within it. Every night is different, because the shows involve an audience Q&A hosted by his The Infinite Monkey Cage co-host Robin Ince.
Professor Brian Cox said: “It’s immensely gratifying to see so many people of all ages interested in fundamental questions about the Universe and our place within it. These questions may appear esoteric and disconnected from our lives, but this is to undervalue the perspective that astronomy and cosmology can bring. The Earth is a tiny, fragile spec in the darkness, and yet incalculably valuable because of its temporary occupation by an unlikely civilization that has found a way to explore the origin of the Universe. The challenges we face in the 21st century are global, and require global solutions. We are citizens of the world, whether we like it or not, and this is obvious when we raise our gaze beyond the horizon and outwards to the stars.”
Win: A Pair of Tickets to see Professor Brian Cox Live To enter the draw just send your name address and telephone number on a postcard to: Brian Cox Draw, 31 Elm Drive, Cherry Burton, East Yorkshire HU17 7RJ The closing date for entries is 27th April 2017

New East Yorkshire local food guide launched – 15 years old this year! The new 2017/18 East Yorkshire Enjoy Local Food Guide was unveiled at a recent meeting of the East Riding of Yorkshire Rural Partnership at Bishop Burton College.
Graham Ward OBE (Chair of East Yorkshire Local Food Network) presenting a copy to Sir Ian Macdonald of Sleat (Chair of East Riding of Yorkshire Rural partnership).
This edition marks the 15th year of the guide’s publication and is the biggest yet, running to 40 pages. The guide is packed with information on local food producers, suppliers, retailers and hospitality businesses that are proud to incorporate local produce into their menus.
8
At its inception, in 2002, the local food guide was produced by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. In the best spirit of partnership working, it has for many years now been produced jointly by the council and the East Yorkshire Local Food Network. “The last few years has seen a phenomenal increase in consumer interest in local food and our local food businesses have responded magnificently to this trend,” said Graham Ward OBE, chair of the East Yorkshire Local Food Network.
Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The range and availability of quality local food continues to grow and is testament to the passion and skill of local people and businesses that produce it. “We look forward to more visitors and residents alike enjoying the very best food available anywhere.” Helen Wright, rural policy and partnerships manager at East Riding of Council, added: “Our first local produce guide was produced in 2002 as one way of supporting a farming sector that was then reeling from the dreadful Foot and Mouth outbreak of 2001 and other serious industry challenges. Now, much later, it is wonderful to see how the local food sector has prospered and how the guide has evolved to remain as popular and relevant as ever with the public and businesses alike.”
Free copies of the 2017/18 East Yorkshire Enjoy Local Food Guide are available for collection “We are delighted that East Riding of Yorkshire from Local Food Network member businesses, Council continues its staunch backing of the sector, tourist information centres and council libraries as illustrated by its tireless work in producing and and customer service centres. Copies will also disseminating our annual guide and we are grateful be distributed at local food festivals and events MAYNARD AD.qxp_Layout 1 26/07/2016 1 to our sponsors, McClarrons Insurance, for their10:10 Page throughout the year. invaluable support.” Est. 1979

Twin Rivers Wind Farm Community Fund still open to applications Local groups in the parishes of Reedness, Swinefleet and Twin Rivers are still being invited to submit applications to a local wind farm fund before Friday, 28 April. Twin Rivers Wind Farm started to produce electricity towards the end of 2016 and, linked to this, the Twin Rivers Wind Farm Community Fund is now established.
10
As part of the planning agreement for this development, the wind farm owner, NTR plc, has committed to donating £30,000 per year to this fund for the benefit of the local community. A newly-formed community fund panel, comprising representatives from Reedness, Swinefleet and Twin Rivers Parish Councils, NTR plc and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is now up and running. Applications for funding are welcomed from community groups, societies, charities, parish councils, schools and churches in the area of benefit. The fund is administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
To contact
Councillor John Barrett, fund panel chairman, said: “This is a marvellous opportunity for local groups to apply for funds to support projects that address the priorities of local residents in the parishes of Reedness, Swinefleet and Twin Rivers. “It is my sincere hope that as many local groups as possible come forward with applications, in a timely fashion, to take full advantage of this fund for their area.” Kieran Tubridy, asset manager at NTR plc, added: “NTR PLC is committed to supporting communities near to our wind farms and we are delighted to see this fund launched. We look forward to working with the communities near Twin Rivers Wind Farm for many years to come.” For further information, including eligibility conditions and to how to apply online, visit the Twin Rivers Community Wind Farm Fund webpage www.eastriding.gov.uk/twin-riversfund or contact the fund administrator at ruralfunding@eastriding.gov.uk or by calling (01482) 391655.

Historic archives and artefacts dating back to the very origins of the Paralympic movement will be catalogued and conserved by the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies, due to the assistance of local resident Laura Cotton. The archives department of Buckinghamshire County Council, in partnership with the National Paralympic Heritage Trust (NPHT), has been awarded a major grant of £175,566 by the Welcome Trust for cataloguing and conservation work on the vital records which track the origins of the Paralympic movement. These will include patient records dating back to 1944, when Dr Ludwig Guttmann first set up the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In addition to those patient files, the archives of the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation and WheelPower will come into the scope of this exciting ‘Spinal to Sport’ project. The award will fund three new members of staff to help complete the work, which will take two years. County Archivist Laura Cotton who was instrumental in obtaining the funding said: “It is really exciting to be widening access to these records by cataloguing them and making them available to the public. The Paralympic Games and the work done by Sir Ludwig Guttmann is extremely important to Buckinghamshire and we are immensely proud of the recognition this gets internationally.”
Source. The Bucks Herald
Paul Mainds, Chair of the NPHT, who were partners in the application, said “Not only will the records be treasured locally, but they will be the cornerstone of our nationwide exhibition and public engagement work going forward. We are delighted to be working with Laura and her team at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies.” Laura added “What is really exciting about this is the importance of these records to the heritage of Buckinghamshire and the potential they have to be used internationally in academic and medical research into spinal injuries and Paralympic sport in general.”

Drinking pint of beer a day linked to reduced risk of heart attack Moderate drinkers less likely than teetotallers and heavy drinkers to see doctor for heart conditions including angina and strokes caused by blood clots
Drinking one pint a day has been linked to reduced risk of developing several serious heart conditions in new large-scale study. Moderate drinking, usually defined as no more than 14 units of alcohol a week – equivalent to around one and a half bottles of wine or seven pints of regular-strength lager – is associated with a lower risk of developing some, but not all, cardiovascular diseases, said scientists. When compared to moderate drinking, not drinking at all was linked to increased risk of unstable angina, heart attack, sudden coronary death, heart failure, stroke caused by loss of blood flow, abdominal aneurysm and peripheral arterial disease. Goole’s centre will be based at the district hospital in Woodland Avenue.
20
What hours can people attend? All care centres will open from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.
Will patients be able to turn up without an appointment? Yes, each centre will operate as a walk-in facility with no need to book in advance. Exactly the same treatment and care will be available at whichever centre you visit. What assessment and treatment services will be provided ? • Traumatic injuries, broken bones and sports injuries • Respiratory and chest complaints • General ear, nose and throat conditions • Back, head and neck injuries and whiplash • Cuts, wounds, burns and scalds • Minor eye injury • Insect and animal bites • Minor surgery What other health services will be available? • Community and primary care • Crisis support for mental health issues • General practice • Pharmacy • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy • Social care services • Voluntary and community services What supporting services will be on offer? • Diagnostics (blood tests, x-ray, ultrasound) • Plaster casts for broken bones • Non-medical prescribing • Radiological imagining When will the new centres be opening? All three should all be up and running before the end of 2017. Andrew Percy MP said: “Whilst I welcome the fact that the CCG has decided Goole should receive one of the centres, I am disappointed that it will be open for 16 hours from either 8am to midnight or 7am to 11pm. We will of course still have the out of hours GP service working through the night here in Goole.”

Growing Potatoes Potatoes are hugely versatile and are a staple ingredient of many meals in one form or another - boiled, mashed, chipped or baked. Potatoes are classified as being either earlies or maincrops. Early potatoes are ready to harvest much sooner than maincrops and are what we call new potatoes. Maincrop potatoes are in the ground a lot longer, they have a better yield and produce larger tubers (potatoes). Grow Once planted, when the stems are about 23cm (9in) high, start earthing up by carefully drawing soil up to the stems and covering to produce a flat-topped ridge about 15cm (6in) high. This can be done little and often or in one go. Earthing up protects newly emerging foliage from to frost damage . It also protects developing new potatoes from light. Light turns tubers green and green potatoes are poisonous.

Keep crops well watered in dry weather; the vital time is once the tubers start to form. A liquid feed of a balanced general fertiliser every fortnight can help increase yields. Plant It’s vital with earlies and a good idea with maincrops to chit the seed potatoes first before planting; this means allowing them to start sprouting shoots. Stand them rose end up (the rose end is the one with the most small dents in the skin, or ‘eyes’) in egg boxes or similar in a light, frost-free place. The potatoes are ready to plant when the shoots are about 3cm (1in) long. Follow these guidelines for planting times of seed tubers: First earlies: around late March. Second earlies: early to mid-April Maincrops: mid- to late April. This

varies slightly depending on where you are in the country. If you are planting in containers, start even earlier. The traditional way is to dig a narrow trench 12cm (5in) deep. This can be lined with compost or even grass clippings for a better crop. The seed tubers are spaced 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop varieties in rows 24in (60cm) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Sprinkle slug pellets or other slug deterrents between the tubers as keel slugs can be a problem. Potatoes need a sunny site away from frost pockets - the newly emerging foliage is susceptible to frost damage. The other method is to grow the potatoes under black polythene. The tubers are planted through the black polythene. The advantage of this method is that there is no need to earth up and the new potatoes form just below soil level which means there’s no digging to harvest them. Small crops of potatoes can also be grown in large, deep containers, and this is a good way of getting an early batch of new potatoes. Line the bottom 15cm (6in) of the container with potting compost and plant the seed potato just below this. As the new stems start growing, keep adding compost until the container is full. Varieties ‘Picasso’ AGM: A heavy-cropping maincrop potato with creamy skin and pink eyes. It has good disease resistance to scab. ‘Desiree’: A firm favourite with rosy skin and pale yellow flesh. This is a versatile maincrop potato. ‘Charlotte’ AGM: This is a salad potato, with yellowskinned waxy tubers. Treat as an early potato. ‘Accent’ AGM: A first early with creamy waxy flesh and good scab resistance. It’s a very tasty new potato.
