Andrew Percy MP

Funding Announced

Goole MP and Communities Minister, Andrew Percy, recently announced funding of £57,900 for the Goole Youth Action project as part of the Government’s Communities Fund. This funding will help transform the lives of young people (16-19 years) who are not in education, employment or training. Young people will be appointed a life coach to support them with issues like housing and unemployment, and also advise them on further education, careers and youth enterprise. This funding is part of an almost £1 million government package for 15 projects in the north of England. These projects will focus on tackling social isolation, helping with employment, and improving people’s health and wellbeing.

4

Commenting on the funding, Andrew said,

To contact

“Here in Goole, we have seen massive reductions in youth unemployment from the appallingly high levels we inherited in 2010. There is still work to be done and that is why I am delighted that the Goole Youth Project is receiving some of this funding. Tackling the small number of young people not in education, employment or training requires dedicated support, but it also requires young people to engage and keep their side of the bargain too. Hopefully, this funding will help transform lives to the benefit of the individuals and the wider community.” Andrew Percy MP 83 Pasture Road, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, DN14 6BP • Telephone: 01405 767 969 • Email: brigg.goole@gmail.com Website: www.andrewpercy.org/

Andrew Percy Visits the Goole Paddlers Project Goole MP, Andrew Percy, recently joined Richard Parry, Chief Executive of the Canal & River Trust and young people aged 16-19 at a new canoe taster session in Goole. The taster sessions are part of the ‘Goole Paddlers Project’ run by East Riding Council and funded through Sport England. The project aims to encourage young people to enjoy the recreational use of local waterways through free canoe sessions, run from the Yorkshire Waterways Museum, using the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Commenting during the visit, Andrew said: “I’d love to see more people enjoying the waterways. These free canoe tasters are a great way to encourage young people to take up the sport in the longer term ahead of the Desmond Canoe Family Trail coming to Goole. It’s been brilliant to hear first-hand how much these young people, many of whom have never been in a canoe before, have enjoyed getting afloat. I hope this will encourage Goole to open its first canoe club and wish every success to the Canal & River Trust, East Riding Council and all those involved.” Richard Parry, Chief Executive at the Canal & River Trust, a charity which looks after nearly half of the waterways in England and Wales said: “The Desmond Family Canoe Trail is just one of the many projects and partnerships the charity supports to help people to enjoy the 2,000 miles of wonderful waterways we look after. Even on a blustery day like today, the thrill of getting out on the water is plain to see. It would be wonderful if today’s canoe taster could be the start of a lifelong interest for some and that’s at the heart of our work – helping people to make the most of their local canals and rivers.”

The canoe sessions come alongside Goole’s preparations to host England’s first coast-to-coast canoe trail. The Desmond Family Canoe Trail stretches 162 miles to connect Goole to Merseyside along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and Aire & Calder Navigation, waterways which are looked after by the Canal & River Trust.

8

Travelling through Wigan, Blackburn, Burnley, Leeds and Skipton, it will take the average paddler 7-10 days to complete the Desmond Family Canoe Trail. The trail is named after newspaper proprietor Richard Desmond, who donated £1.3m to the project and has the support of British Canoeing and Canoe England. Primary School Admissions 2017 Parents and carers of children starting infant, junior and primary schools in September 2017 have been told which school their child will be attending. Letters and e-mails telling them the outcome of their applications for places were being sent out today (Tuesday 18 April). This year, 3,180 applicants living in the East Riding of Yorkshire applied for 2017/2018 reception places at infant and primary schools, with over 99 per cent (3,155) getting places at one of their three choices of school and 96 per cent (3,054) getting their first choice of school.

10

primary schools in other local authority areas, while 184 children living elsewhere will be travelling to East Riding schools.

A total of 21 of the 118 primary and infant schools are oversubscribed.

Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “At a time when many areas in the country are facing real difficulties in finding enough primary school places, it is good to see that we are still able to give most parents places for their children at the schools they want.

Less than one per cent (25) could not be given places at any of their three chosen schools. The local authority has been able to give all 25 children places at their local, catchment area schools.

“Getting the balance right between the number of school places and the expected demand for these places is always difficult, even more so at times when the resources available for schools and school buildings are very limited.”

All 480 East Riding residents who applied for their children to transfer from an infant school to Year 3 at one of the six junior schools got places at the junior school they named as their first choice.

Kevin Hall, the council’s director of children, families and schools, said: “The outcomes of this year’s admissions round confirm that, overwhelmingly, the schools in the East Riding continue to offer parents what they really want for their children: a good education at a local school.”

Only 24 East Riding children will be going to

CROWNED CHAMPIONS!

Crown AFC are the new name on the Humber Premier League Trophy for the 2016-2017 season.

After a nervy March, picking up only 5 points from a possible 9, Crown went into April knowing it was a must win game away to title rivals Sculcoates Amateurs. That game didn’t go to plan either with the home side leading at the break 1-0, but with 3 second half goals, Crown ran out 3-1 winners and the upper hand into the final weeks of the season, which would see them as eventual league winners.

12

A humble statement of thanks was released by club manager Dean Markham, ensuring everyone was recognised throughout this journey, highlighting the hard work has been carried out over a number of seasons and not just this historic one. Finally thanking Mel Markham, Dean’s Dad, and highlighting local football is far more than what goes on at training and matchday and everything that happens off the pitch is equally as important. Dean went on to say “Massive thanks, well done and congratulations to all!!" Crown are also on for an unprecedented double, with a Whiteheads Fish & Chips Cup Final place against LIV Supplies on Thursday 11th May. The HPL Division 1 side will be no push over having already beaten HPL opposition in Chalk Lane and South Cave in the semis.

New VED car taxation explained as Road tax returns to a flat fee

Motoring News carpet & flooring specialists

Largest bed showroom in the area!

Owners of cars first registered before April 1 2017 will pay tax according to the existing rates, governed by their CO2 emissions. Cars registered after that will incur a £140 flat fee annually. And those costing more than £40,000 will be liable to an annual £310 supplement. Owners of cars powered purely by electricity or hydrogen and with no tailpipe emissions will pay nothing.

1 Church Street, Goole, DN14 5BA, 01405 761719

However, before the flat rate becomes applicable, you’ll have to pay tax according to CO2 emissions in year one of ownership. The lower the emissions, the less tax you’ll pay. And the sliding scale really punishes more polluting cars, with those pumping out more than 255g/km of CO2 incurring a cost of £2,000 for the first year. The £310 supplement for cars that cost more than £40,000 applies for the first five years it is subject to the regular £140-a-year tax, so effectively years two to six of its life.

Gardening

Growing Carrots It’s nice to see a vegetable on the plate which isn’t green. Carrots are not the easiest vegetable to grow, but they are not difficult either. A long cropping season is possible. 12 months of the year if the maincrop is properly stored in sand. Carrots do not really freeze well, even though people do freeze them. A deep medium to sandy soil is best. Free of large stones preferably. Heavier clay soils will grow carrots if they are well worked and improved. Fresh manure should not be added before sowing. In a 3 year rotation the carrots will go on the plot manured 2 years ago. Liming shouldn’t be needed unless the soil is below pH 6.5. Carrots do not require as high a pH as do Brassicas or Peas and Beans.

26

A nutrient content in balance suits carrots. Adjust soil according to soil test results, if a test has been carried out. Otherwise use a balanced general purpose fertilizer (NPK proportions 1:1:1 multiples of by percentage such as 10:10:10) Liquid feeding may be needed during growth. Water the crop frequently in dry spells, as carrots have a high water content, and therefore a need for plenty of water. If they get too dry, the roots will harden up, and then crack when soil returns to be being moist again. Carrots can be anything from small round roots like golf balls to long tapering roots about 60cm long. Not many people will want either of those, and somewhere inbetween in best. Early varieties are usually stump rooted and grow to approximately 10 to 15cm long. Maincrop may be pointed or stump rooted and reach up to 25cm long. The distance between rows varies, depending on the variety and circumstances. In cold frames or on hot beds an early variety needs only 15cm between the rows. Outdoor sowings require 25 to 30cm between rows. To walk between the rows to hoe etc a distance of

Please mention

less than 25cm would make life difficult, even though carrot tops do not need very much space. Sow thinly, and thinning will not be required. Just pull the largest first and leave the rest to develop. If thinned, 5cm should be enough, even for maincrop carrots. No-one wants big carrots anymore. Carrot root fly is a real problem with carrots, but it shouldn’t be. It is very easy to prevent. There is no need to resort to chemicals either. Organically grown carrots grown commercially are often full of carrot root fly larvae. I prefer my vegetables without maggots. Gardeners may notice that the crops grown in Cold frames do not get effected, but outdoor crops do. The reason is the carrot fly is a ground hopping insect, unable to jump higher than 30cm. The cold frame effectively creates a barrier. If a frame without its top is used to grow the outdoor crop during the summer then that too will not be effected. Have the sides 45cm high for good measure. Organic Farmers with big fields cannot do this, which is why supermarket organic carrots are often affected. For non organic growing, effective chemical pesticides are available to the professional. Soil pesticides available to Amateurs do not seem to be very effective. Potent chemicals are just not allowed into the hands of Amateurs nowadays by law. The barrier method is better for both organic and non organic gardeners. Pull young carrots throughout the season by successionally sowing up to June. Maincrop can be lifted and stored in Autumn. In milder and dryer areas it is possible to leave the crop in the ground overwinter and dig as required.
