Hello Readers. Welcome to the September edition of the magazine. I hope you have been enjoying the Summer and have had a relaxing holiday or a few days out at least. I can’t get over how quick the school holidays have gone - it only seems like yesterday that I was at my grandchildrens school in Eastrington watching sports day and the boys were really excited about their forthcoming holidays and whoosh in the blink of an eye they are now getting ready to start the new term and school year. When I was at school (many, many moons ago!!) the six weeks holiday seemed to last forever and was always sunny and filled with endless days of playing out with friends. It’s funny how time passes when you are young and as you get older you have less and less time - especially time to do the things that are important like spending time with your family, friends and of course your partner if you are lucky enough to have found that someone special who you can call your soul mate. So with that in mind don’t waste your valuable time doing things that somebody else could do for you much quicker - call in a tradesman (the magazine is full of reliable and professional people) to do the jobs that need doing so that you can enjoy your downtime! Until next month keep safe and enjoy the summer weather whilst it lasts - autumn and winter are just around the corner!!

East Riding A-level students best results ever Students across the East Riding are celebrating their exam success, as early indications show that all schools and academies have again improved their A-level results, which look set to be the best ever. The majority of East Riding schools have achieved their best ever A-level results this year. It is only possible to directly compare this year’s A-level results to last year as the measures changed in 2016 and many exams also changed this year. The new A-level league tables will not be published by the Government until January 2018 and will include both attainment and progress measures for A-level and separately for other level 3 qualifications including BTECs. However, the results announced today suggest that East Riding sixth forms have maintained their successful improvement trend for the sixth year in a row.

average point score was 30. This year, early indications from school and academies are that East Riding results have improved by an average of half a grade per pupil, with an average grade of C-plus and an average point score of 34 – the best improvement on record. The improved results this year include increases in both average points score and average grade. The average point score has risen steadily in East Riding schools and academy sixth forms and is schools’ best ever result in 2017. 2016 saw the best-ever A-level progress in East Riding school and academy sixth forms and the East Riding is expected to do even better, relative to national data, when the new progress measures are published in January 2018. As a result of this year’s successes at A-level and their equivalents, many of the 1,200 young people in Y13 in East Riding school sixth forms will be moving on in September to the education or employment of their choice.

Easy ways to make your home chic While locating a stopcock or fitting a new plug socket might be beyond many of us, we Brits haven’t totally lost our DIY mojo. Our tool kits are thinner on the ground than they used to be – 30 per cent of young people don’t even own one – but our appetite for home improvements is insatiable.
These improvements not only make the home more pleasant to live in but also, according to estate agent William Rousset of Milton Stone, can add to its value. “Uncluttered properties with attractive colour palettes are simply more appealing to buyers,” he says. What’s more, studies suggest that taking part in “meaningful activities” such as DIY can be beneficial to our mental health – the positive effects are even more pronounced if you avoid hardware stores, says Bulmer. “I don’t spend my Sundays trawling DIY shops or even looking on social media,” he says. “I just collect things I love and find ways to use them to e nhance my home.”
“People have cottoned on to the fact that you only need the most basic skills to d rastically improve the appearance of your home,” says Christopher Gilbey, founder of bitsbobsandoddjobs.com, a company that supplies handymen to lazy Londoners. “They might pay people to do the boring jobs, but they’re becoming more creative in other respects.”

“In the past, DIY was a quick, cheap, short-term fix; whereas today people are taking a long-term approach, working with what they have and using premium products old and new to create something wonderful that will last”
Edward Bulmer
Posh DIY – the interiors trend fuelled by the thousands of inspiring interiors images circulating Pinterest and Instagram – requires little more than a hammer, some nails and a paintbrush and, in many cases, no tools at all. “I’m a great believer in simply moving items around to keep things fresh, and digging up forgotten favourites,” says designer Matilda Goad. “Rearrange your cushions, cover a chair with a pretty throw, find some baskets to store the mess. Cover the walls in photos.” Edward Bulmer, an architectural historian and founder of Edward B ulmer Natural Paint, agrees that the definition of DIY is changing: “In the past, DIY was a quick, cheap, short-term fix; whereas today people are taking a long-term approach, working with what they have and using p remium products old and new to create something wonderful that will last.”
ENTRANCE AND HALLWAY
Refresh your front door Nothing improves the appearance of your house more than a different door colour. Dark blues and greens – “warm and inviting” – have taken over from pale greys and fawns this summer, according to interior designer Nicole Salvesen of salvesengraham.com.

A wall of books Books are the most appealing of ornaments – all you need is some shelves to display them. House & Home Feature Blinds not curtains If you don’t love your curtains, get rid, says Max McMurdo, designer and TV presenter, as they reduce the natural light, collect dust, and yellow in the sun. Replace them with tasteful bespoke blinds in shades to contrast with your paintwork from blindstogo.com. Add further interest by painting the woodwork around the windows a darker shade than the walls. Salvesen recommends deep neutrals such as Dream On and Milk from Paint the Town Green (paintthetowngreen.biz).

Hide your TV Paint the insides of your TV console or shelving a darker colour to distract the eye from a mammoth TV. “It doesn’t have to be black – it can be dark blue or grey,” Salvesen explains. Hang some wall art, or position a piece of sculpture to create a different focal point. Group pictures Clusters of prints & paintings give the impression there is more art around the house. Lay your paintings on the floor to decide how to arrange them – interior designer Rita Konig suggests hanging them offset with no “tram lines” between them. Christopher Gilbey recommends eye level for a single picture – people always hang art too high: “Something bigger above something smaller looks better.” “Photographs work with paintings,” adds Salvesen. Cheap mounts and frames are available at eframe.co.uk.

BEDROOM
Dress your bed A bed should always be covered, according to interior designer Sophie Conran, even if you’re not using the room. Rather than replacing your bed linen, invest in a blanket or quilt to throw over your bed. For the full effect, design your own headboard (onion dome-shapes are in fashion) and get it made up at headboardworkshop.co.uk.
Update your wardrobe Small changes such as adding antique-look door handles from anthropologie.com and a darker paint colour can make a big difference to your Continued on page 12

Tray of treasures If you make one upgrade to a guest bedroom, it should be the addition of a tray, suggests Konig. “They are useful for corralling stuff into what feels like order,” she says. On it you could arrange a box of tissues, a candle, and a vase of flowers. Borrow one from your kitchen or buy lacquer trays at £174 from ritakonig.com.

Statement towels Filling your bathroom with matching towels, robes and bathubats will bring cohesion and colour to a small space. For reasonably priced Egyptian cotton towels see soakandsleep.com. Sew coloured loops to white handtowels to make them hook-friendly. Upgrade your showerhead Your shower experience can be improved by screwing on a new showerhead. Not only will it look better, but you can choose additional settings such as massage, jet and mist. Remove the old one with pliers or a wrench – all new showerheads come with fitting instructions.

and can brighten the appearance of a bathroom. If you’re feeling brave you could even paint it with a chequerboard pattern or stripes, says Rita Konig.
Paper your bathroom Stickers and stencils have had their day but wallpaper trim or border is back on trend – and nothing like as difficult to put up as wallpaper itself. A trim around the top of the wall can transform a downstairs loo, according to Nicole Salvesen.
Organise the chaos The best place to store cosmetics, towels and other bathroom paraphernalia is on the wall. Ikea.com is great for shelves and cupboards and theholdingcompany.co.uk for rattan baskets and containers – apparently, it’s de rigueur to keep loo rolls in a basket rather than in a holder.
KITCHEN
Demould There’s nothing more offputting for guests than grubby grout and b at h ro o m mould. Blast spores with HG M o u l d Spray, and wash and de-scale plugs, taps and shower drains with a limescale cleaner. If grouting is showing signs of age, but redoing the whole lot is a step too far, there is always the grout pen. It’s similar to Tipp-Ex, brightening and concealing dirty marks. Unibond Antimould Grout Pen, £7.94, homebase.co.uk.
Hang up your plates Don’t be afraid to hang art on the walls – it immediately makes a kitchen look less clinical. If you’re worried about grease, hang plates instead of paintings. Scour your local vintage shops for interesting ceramics or buy online from anthropologie.com or Rockett St George at rockettstgeorge.co.uk.
Nice jars Even if cupboard space is limited, you can declutter your kitchen surfaces and add interest by decanting pasta, rice, coffee and tea into attractive containers. Salvesen recommends Kilner jars with lids such as those from Le Parfait (leparfait.co.uk).
Replace your handles Decorative brass and copper kitchen cupboard handles and bull knobs are taking over from flatfronted units, and don’t be afraid to mix metals, Salvesen says: “I’ve got chrome taps and brass knobs, and no one notices.” For simple handles, see thehandlestudio.co.uk or for something fancier willowandstone.co.uk. Rethink your cupboards Another way to clear your kitchen surfaces without building new units is to improve existing cupboard interiors. “Spice racks screwed to the inside of doors, hooks and additional shelving will give you more useful internal storage,” Salvesen explains. Sdslondon.co.uk supplies a range of wicker storage baskets for cupboards, along with wire pull-out baskets. If you’re confident with a drill, you could even upgrade your cupboard doors – classic shaker style never goes out of fashion. Shakerdoors.co.uk supply doors for Ikea units. Inject some colour Rather than repainting your whole kitchen, overhaul the appearance by painting the island or units a contrasting colour. “If the island is a different tone, it will give more of a sensation of space,” says Salvesen. Bulmer recommends using the pale green shades of an English country garden to help blur boundaries of house and garden.

Gardening
Grow your own NIGEL HOLMES REVEALS THE FIVE SUPERFOODS YOU CAN HARVEST IN YOUR OWN GARDEN WITH YOUR CHILDREN Summer is a perfect time to connect with nature and introduce your kids to the joys of gardening. And what could be better than growing plants that are packed with nutrients?
26
Many so-called superfoods, revered for their superior health benefits, are surprisingly easy to grow at home. Children are natural gardeners. Not only does it combine their love of messy play, it also feeds their innate curiosity about the world. What’s more, fussy eaters are far more likely to try a food if they’ve helped to nurture and pick it themselves. There is something magical about sharing a child’s sense of wonder as they witness a seed grow into something tasty to eat. You don’t need a large garden, or a degree in horticulture to get started; just a patch of soil or a few containers, and some seeds. But if you don’t know your pea seeds from your parsnips, knowing where to start can be a challenge. So here are five foods which are simple to grow, and (almost!) guaranteed to ensure your child devours the fruits of your labour come harvest time. Blueberries Most children will polish off a bowl of blueberries
Please mention
faster than you can pick them. A power-house of antioxidants, these super fruits also make attractive patio plants. Blueberries thrive in acidic soil, so are grown in containers filled with ericaceous (acidic) compost. It’s worth buying a couple of different varieties as this will encourage cross-pollination and heavier crops. Keep the soil moist using rainwater if possible to maintain the pH balance, and prune in late February once the plant is a couple of years old, to remove the old wood. Your only challenge is likely to be persuading your little helper to save some fruit for you. Tomatoes Tomatoes are packed with the potent antioxidant, lycopene, which gives them their distinctive red colour and helps mop up free radicals that can harm our cells. Home grown tomatoes taste so much better than shop-bought ones. For pots or hanging baskets, try bush or tumbling varieties such as Tumbling Tom, Garden Pearl or Tumbler. To grow from seed, simply scatter a few seeds into pots of compost in March or April, then place on a sunny window- sill. Wait until June before

Gardening planting outside in a warm, sheltered spot, or in growbags or containers. Water little and often, and enjoy fresh from the vine and warm from the sun – perfect! Pumpkin This Halloween favourite is a great source of vitamin A (essential for eye health) and betacarotene. The large seeds are easy for little fingers to handle and can be planted indoors in pots of compost in April, then transplanted outside in June. If space is an issue, try one of the cute miniature varieties, like Baby Bear or Jack Be Little. Water regularly until the fruits are ready to harvest in October and when you’ve finished carving, the nutritious flesh is great in soups, curries and cakes. And don’t forget the seeds, which are full of protein, magnesium, potassium and zinc. Kale This once humble member of the brassica family has enjoyed a surge in popularity of late, since being made the patron saint of vegetables. Fortunately, it’s also incredibly easy to grow and tolerant of bad weather. Sow seeds directly outdoors between March and August. Once the seedlings emerge, it’s a good idea to cover them with nets to keep birds and butterflies away. Then simply pick the leaves when they are young and tender. And for a snack that even vegetable-phobic children are likely to enjoy, try making kale crisps. Tear the kale into small pieces, then toss in a little oil and salt, or another seasoning like paprika if you prefer. Then roast in the oven at 200°C for five minutes. The results are delicious! Beetroot Beetroot is a good source of iron, naturally occurring folic acid and antioxidants. It’s also exceptionally easy to grow and doesn’t even require much watering. Sow the seeds outdoors from February onwards, in the ground or in containers. Once the roots are the size of golf balls, simply pull them up and boil or roast whole with their skins on. Or grate the flesh into brownies or chocolate cake.
